Today, 150 years after we first set up home in Pall Mall, with 15 decades of finding property and looking after people under our belt, our clients now consider us to be their, ‘home experts’.

Yours sincerely,

The town’s position on the Thames has been crucial for trade and commerce throughout the centuries, while industries such as brewing and leather tanning have brought prosperity. Interview with Shrewsbury House School

Tell us about your school…

Founded in 1865, Shrewsbury House School is one of England’s oldest boys’ Preparatory Schools, catering to ages 7-13. At 13, students transition to senior schools, well-prepared and intellectually curious. Recognising each boy as an individual, their achievements are celebrated. In 2023, students earned 22 scholarships across 9 schools, including 10 academic scholarships to prestigious institutions like St. Paul’s School, King’s College School, Hampton School and Royal Grammar School Guildford.

‘Pupils have excellent attitudes to learning and develop high levels of independence from a young age. Pupils are thoughtful and kind, showing high levels of respect and inclusivity to others.’

ISI - EXCELLENT IN ALL AREAS

What would you say is special about school life at...

Shrewsbury House School aims to develop independent, curious, and passionate learners to succeed in a changing world. With a rich heritage emphasising values and a forward-thinking approach, we prioritise the holistic development of each child. Our nurturing environment prepares boys for the modern world, ensuring their safety and happiness while achieving exceptional results. We instil a ‘can-do’ attitude among staff and pupils, providing exceptional opportunities in sports, co-curricular clubs, international tours, and unique programs like the Discovery Programme for deep thinking and exploration beyond the regular curriculum. This encourages a joy for learning, cultivating curiosity through questioning rather than just finding answers.

Shrewsbury House’s motto ‘Alta Peto’ means ‘aim high’; we are extremely fortunate that our boys – past and present – have contributed so much to the rich fabric of Shrewsbury House School and continue to aspire to our School motto.

‘This is a first-class prep, where academic rigour is balanced by an equally strong offering in arts and sport. An exciting and varied curriculum.’ Good Schools Guide

Welcome to Bob Trimble Architects

Bob Trimble Architects was founded in 1981, so has over forty years of experience principally in the residential sector in South West London - in the boroughs of Kingston, Richmond & Hounslow. In that time I have done over 2000 projects & have covered every thing from small schemes such as Kitchen extensions right up to multistorey high rise blocks of flats, including Listed Buildings & schemes in Conservation Areas. Apart from residential Architecture I cover specialist skills such as the Party Wall Act (building close to neighbours) & Construction Risk Assessment.

I use the latest CAD technologies to show plans, elevations & 3D imaging. In one image we can encapsulate our proposals.

I can cover the whole process from first meeting right thru the planning process, detail design, finding builders & project management thru to hand over. I have local builders I can put you in contact with. How much this costs dependent entirely on the level of my involvement. At an initial advice meeting (for which no charge), I will go into what my services can include and costs.

I am the key person but I bring other skills such as interior design, structural engineering etc. So I will always be dealing with your project.

Getting residential schemes through Planning can be a nightmare. My particular skill is shaping clients ideas to successfully navigate the planning system. Smaller schemes such as single storey rear & side extensions & loft conversions are generally Permitted Development (ie doesn’t need planning permission). But the rules are tight & need to be adhered to.

I am happy to discuss your ideas even before you purchase the property and guide you through what can be done & what can’t. Even if you go beyond Permitted Development I can usually assess what is likely to be approved & what isn’t by the planners.

I pride myself on a personal service for each client and aim to respond quickly to contacts.

I also work for Developers and Landlord - the end result & aim is still the same.

A more full description of my work can be found on my website.

Interview with The Ultimate Flooring company

Tell us a little about the background of Ultimate Flooring?

The Ultimate Flooring is a wood flooring shop local to Richmond upon Thames. We work with the world’s leading suppliers to provide only the highest quality wood, laminate, and vinyl floors. With over 25 years of experience working with numerous high-profile clients from London and the home counties, we provide a truly bespoke service for supply, installation, and renovation at the best possible rates.

What are your most popular products and styles?

Our most popular floors tend to be from our designer brands, such as Ted Todd, Quick Step, and Original Timber. Because of our excellent relationships with our suppliers, we can guarantee the best prices on some of the most sought-after floors. Our herringbone ranges have always been incredibly popular, as the style is classic and elegant. However, recently a lot of clients have been opting to use our renovation services to restore their existing floors. This option allows for a bespoke, personalised finish whilst also being environmentally friendly.

Is there a project you are most proud of?

While we are proud of every project we complete, our most rewarding projects are those which require creative and intelligent solutions to overcome a difficult problem. In one instance, we encountered a floor which had underfloor heating pipes laid close to the surface. We needed to cut through the floor to access the joists but could not do this without potentially cutting a pipe. A simple but costly solution would have been to take up the entire floor from the edge to access the joists in the middle. However, the solution we arrived at was to let the floor cool down overnight, and then switch on the underfloor heating and use a thermal imaging camera to view the pipes under the floor. We could then cut through without damaging a single pipe. This solution saved our client two weeks of work in their home and thousands of pounds.

Will you visit a clients home to advise them what to choose?

We are happy to arrange obligation-free surveys for all our clients. It is advisable to visit our showroom on Richmond Hill to see our full range of styles, grades, and finishes, but we will always visit to measure and assess what work is required. During these visits, the client has the opportunity to ask any questions they may have.

What is the best thing about working in South West London?

Working in South-West London is ideal for us because we are accessible to such a range of clients. It ensures that we get a wide variety of different project types in many different areas – from commercial flooring in hotels and skyscrapers to residential projects in town houses and flats. There is no project too hard for our skilled floor fitters, and South-West London provides plenty of exciting work. We have completed projects across London and the Home Counties and have even sent fitters to commercial projects in Brighton, Birmingham, and even Manchester.

Talking style with Lucy Spray

Tell us a little about what inspired you to set us your business?

Well, I have always loved home interiors, fabrics and sewing! I spent many enjoyable years working in London, but decided the time had come to give up the commute and follow my passion. I retrained, gaining a Distinction and took the plunge. Working for myself and juggling a young family made practical sense and the balance worked well. Importantly, I truly believe that good home design should be accessible to everyone. We all deserve to live in a home where we feel we belong and can live our best lives.

How does your process work from receiving an initial enquiry?

I have three different fixed-price services to choose from, ranging from a full re-design to a finishing touches service. You keep control of your budget and how much input you have. There are no hidden costs and you know exactly what I will provide. I take a friendly and relaxed approach and welcome all informal enquiries. After our initial chat, you complete a questionnaire so I get a better feel for what you are hoping to achieve. Then we meet, walk through the space together and discuss your likes and dislikes. I start with the floorplan, maximising the space with the optimum layout. We discuss colour and style and I recommend items such as furniture and lighting. I create a digital moodboard, recommending items such as furniture and lighting. This builds the picture of the finished room and I can provide all the product details to help with your shopping list. I can also help with paint and fabric samples, curtains and blinds. Styling notes help to guide you and I can recommend trusted tradespeople if required.

Is there a type of project that get you most excited?

I genuinely enjoy all types of projects and part of the fun is the variety that this job brings. I must admit to getting excited about decorating children’s rooms. You can really have fun with these rooms and there are so many gorgeous products out there now for our little people.

What would you say are the most rewarding gains clients achieve from appointing you for their project?

Reclaiming their home as their own and utilising every single room to its max. Turning an unloved, underused space into a stylish, valuable and useful room can truly change the way we live. Equally, if you are aiming to sell and move on, I can help give your home the best chance of achieving the price you want by creating that important good first impression and attracting the right target buyer.

Whats the most satisfying aspect of your job?

I’m in my happy place when I’m sewing - I find it incredibly therapeutic! I can make bespoke Roman blinds and cushions for my clients which are an ideal finishing touch. But the most satisfying part is when I see the enthusiasm of my clients as they enjoy their finished rooms. It’s so rewarding to know I have really changed the way they use and feel about their home – that they are proud of their new space and want to show it off.

26 www.hamptons.co.uk

new home or unsure how to use your space? i can help you make your home really work for you – one to be proud of which truly represents you.

Or selling up and need to ensure that valuable first impression? i can help maximise interest from the right target buyer.

Should you wish to wet your whistle in Kingston you could hardly have a wider choice. ‘Old school’ inns and taverns, cocktail bars, live music venues, gastropubs, they all abide aplenty in Kingston. Here are a few suggestions but the best way to find your ‘local’ is surely to take the air and simply explore.

Whelan’s Kingston

Whelan’s Kingston is a unique blend of vintage décor and big screen technology, offering a warm welcome to all. Their outdoor area is perfect for al fresco eating – and if the weather doesn’t hold much promise, their glazed dining area brings a wee bit of the outside in.

Interview with Elena Romanova Interiors

Why should people appoint an interior designer instead of managing their own project?

A good interior designer will guide you through a confusing myriad of choices, help you understand your own interiors style, what works and what doesn’t work in your home. A good designer will not just save you time but also money through helping you to avoid expensive mistakes. You will not regret this decision!

What type of projects get you most excited?

I get involved with a huge variety of projects. Colour and wallpaper consultation, small-scale refurbs for sale, all the way to full complex refurbs. I love transforming tired and unloved properties into something my clients would enjoy living in, something that reflects their lifestyle and design preferences. I especially enjoy working with clients who trust me and get excited about the project as much as I do.

Who or what have been your major influences and role models?

My style is always evolving, I work in a variety of styles (since all clients and their homes are different). However, I would like to think there are always some underlying common influences and threads. I personally get most excited by designs that have individuality and soul. I love colour and pattern, I love mixing and matching, I love interiors that have been thought through, I love interiors that feel current and timeless at the same time. I love the restrained playfulness of Turner Pocock, the edgy coolness of Suzy Hoodless and the timeless sophistication of Ilse Crawford and Rose Uniacke.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead?

It is paramount to listen to the client and try to understand how they live, what they like (and what they don’t like!). However, over the years I have come to realise that my job as a designer is to give my clients what they need which is not always the same as what they think they want. You cannot just “copy paste” another homes décor this into your own home. It might have to do with the way you live, or the architecture of your house, or the light your rooms are getting. I believe it is my job to listen and guide you through a myriad of choices to a solution that would best meet your specific needs. I challenge my clients a lot but I always do it in a constructive and positive way to make sure they understand why I am suggesting what I am suggesting and buy into it. After all, this is why they have hired me in the first place. Whatever the challenge, the chances are I must have seen it or done it before.

Is there a project that you are most proud of?

Oh, there are so many.. I always give my all to each project I get involved in. I guess the projects that give me most satisfaction are the ones where we went for a full transformation and where we got on the same wavelength with the clients. The projects where the clients were engaging, responsive, trusting and open-minded. And I also love the clients who are brave and happy to be challenged! I had a client in Richmond who I helped to completely transform two houses over the course of a few years and we had so much fun – colour, amazing wallpapers, interesting lighting.. It was magical!

Interview with kitchen design guru Agnes Zmijewska.

Agnes, tell us about how you came to establish Kitchen Revolutions?

It all started 20 years ago, when I completed my interior design studies and began working in the kitchen industry.

I quickly found that every customer has different needs, and no two kitchens are the same, which I really enjoy. I consider myself very lucky to specialise in such an interesting field, and I still love every new project I get to work on.

As a Germen born designer, what do you think it is about German kitchens that make them so in demand?

German-made kitchens are famous for their quality and precision. I wanted to take the German values that I grew up with into my own work, as they had a big impact on me when I was young. I always seek perfection when I design kitchens for my customers and use that to achieve the best results.

What made you choose Raynes Park as the location for your Kitchen Revolutions showroom?

I received the exclusive offer to become a sole Rot Punkt kitchens dealer in the Wimbledon area, and decided to take that great opportunity. I was also happy to open the Kitchen Revolutions showroom in Raynes Park, instead of somewhere more mainstream like the Wimbledon high street, because it allows me to keep my kitchen prices more affordable for my customers.

What do you like most about being a member of the Raynes Park and Wimbledon community?

Most of all, I like meeting new people and establishing a nice bond with all our neighbours, which helps to feel part of something bigger, uplift the spirit, and achieve common goals. I’m very grateful for all our customers and friends in the local area, as it’s a really great community.

What style advice would you give to Hamptons clients planning a remodel?

1.First of all, allow plenty of time for the whole process of planning, delivery, and installation.

2.Do your research and make sure your chosen kitchen supplier has a good reputation and/or recommendations.

3.Pay attention to the quality of the product to make sure your kitchen will continue to look great and function properly for many years.

4.Whenever possible, choose sustainable and eco-friendly products to reduce environmental impact.

5.Pay attention not only to the kitchen design, but also practicality and ergonomics. Your kitchen designer should advise how to achieve the best results, and will help you choose the most suitable kitchen style and finish.

6.Finally, remember to discuss the latest kitchen innovations with your kitchen designer. Appliances like boiling water taps and downdraft hobs can make your daily cooking easier, quicker, and more enjoyable.

What do you find are the most on trend requests?

1.Eco-friendly cabinets and accessories

2.Industrial-style kitchen designs and black metal elements

3.Two-toned kitchens

4.Blue and green colour cabinetry

5.Brass accessories

6.Dark surfaces and textured woods

Introducing build & renovation expert Lyndon Morgans of LMDS.

Tell us a little about your experience and background?

My Experience is mainly from a residential background. I started working for Berkeley Homes as a Trainee Architectural Technician on the drawing board. I went to design college and progressed up to a qualified Architectural Technician, running small job sites as well as designing new housing stock.

The developments got bigger in the 90s so design work was out sourced and I was promoted to Technical Manager for our own sites. I moved on and worked with the likes of Galliford Try, Barratts, Persimmon & Taylor Wimpey over the years, to name a few, as Technical Manager before setting up my own company. My Experience relates to housing from conversion to new build including extensions. I am an Architectural Designer and affiliated to CIAT.

Which are the biggest trends in residential design right now?

The trends are generally, and what my clients ask for are, open plan living, bigger entertainment areas including Kitchens, family rooms and additional bedrooms. Separate studies for home working are climbing up the list with more and more people working from home. Increased glazing for additional light and well being is also becoming more popular. Clients are not just focused on the inside of their homes they are also looking more at the outside to include landscaped gardens and garden/games rooms to enjoy while on a work break. As people are now spending more time at home working they are prepared to spend the money for enjoyment and well being in the home which now becomes a multifunctional space. Mob:

What words of encouragement would you give to a client who is hesitating to make that first call to you?

I would say if you don’t ask you wont know the answer. The design process and making sure its designed to your needs and budget, with the correct approvals in place, does have a process which needs to be explained. This is all explained to the client on the first phone call/email or House Consultation. Generally, if are thinking of adding additional space to your home or looking to move and add additional space to a new property we can advise.

What is the process of having a professional advise us on what to do?

The first steps are to establish what you need or what you would like then contact us via a phone call or email or via the website with your details. We can then advise and provide you a design quote if its straightforward or carry out a house consultation if the customer wants us to view a particular property and discuss the process in more detail. The first port of call will be a general enquiry. Some customers know what they want, some have a vision and we make it happen including explaining the statutory approvals required, feasibility costs and the process involved. We aim to simplify the design process by not complicating it which pushes the budget up.

What satisfaction do you receive for providing your service to clients?

I believe in good communication and value for money which is the starting point. Enjoying what you do and helping others to build their dreams is paramount from inception to completion and it thrills me to see the clients happiness with the end product. I am passionate about the business and like what I do which helps focus the mind and keep clients happy.

Planning and Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

www.kingston.gov.uk/policy/planning-obligations

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
