FALL SPORTS

LETTER FROM OUR SPORTS EDITOR It’s a great opportunity to look back at all that our area athletes have achieved - and look forward to seeing our high schools back in competition soon and our communities supporting them from the sidelines. Thank you to our subscribers for supporting the Ames Tribune. Because of your subscriptions, we can better serve our athletes. We will continue to be there coving these events in the rain, snow, wind, or sun. Our sports reporters are dedicated to making sure these student-athletes’ achievements do not go unnoticed. Because no matter what side of the fi eld you sit on, it’s our community’s common bond.

The loss of high school sports this spring reminds us just how vital and valuable they are for students and entire communities. The COVID-19 pandemic kept us away from the track, off the soccer fi eld and away from tennis courts this spring, but that only provided perspective for how important it was to spend Friday night under the lights, perfect autumn mornings at cross-country courses, Saturday afternoons at wrestling meets and everywhere else sports brings not only athletes but entire communities together. That’s why the Ames Tribune is honoring these student-athletes with its annual Best of Preps awards. This year, we’ve moved online rather than our in-person celebration, but we believe it is a fi rst-class production with AllStar athletes helping to honor the best in our area. TRAVIS HINES This event honors the top male and female high school Sports Editor athletes from Ames, Gilbert, Roland-Story, Nevada, Col- Ames Tribune lins-Maxwell, Ballard, South Hamilton and Colo-NESCO. Our sports department chose these top athletes with help from the coaches.

TOP FEMALE ATHLETE

W I N N E R

MIKAYLA HOGUE

Collins-Maxwel DRAINTECH

Collins-Maxwell junior pitcher Mikayla Houge led the Spartan softball team to its second-consecutive state softball championship in Class 1A this past summer. Houge was named first-team all-state and 1A Player of the Year for the second season in a row in 2019. She has been named captain of the 1A all-tournament team each of the past two seasons. Houge went 27-1 with a 0.40 ERA, 302 strikeouts and only 26 walks in 158 innings in 2019. She also hit .522 with five home runs and 44 RBIs. During the 1A state championship game against Clarksville Houge came up with a clutch double in the bottom of the sixth inning that led to a run, helping Collins-Maxwell rally from a 3-2 deficit to go up by a run. She then blanked the Indians in the bottom of the inning to close out a 4-3 victory that gave the Spartans the championship. In her two seasons throwing for the Spartans Houge has gone 55-2 with a 0.41 ERA and 618 strikeouts in 316 innings. She also hit .520 with nine home runs and 84 RBIs over that time to firmly establish herself as one of the best softball players in the history of the state. As an eighth-grader Houge helped Collins-Maxwell-Baxter reach state for the only time in program history. She was named first-team all-state for the Raiders as a freshman. Prior to her high school career Houge was a pitcher for the Central Iowa Little League team that made the Little League World Series in 2015. Houge’s devastating combination of speed, movement and location on her pitches and her tremendous poise on the mound earned her a Division 1 scholarship. She will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall.

TOP MALE ATHLETE

W I N N E R

GABE GREENLEE

Ames DRAINTECH

Ames junior Gabriel Greenlee continued his rise toward becoming one of the best wrestlers in the state placing second at 285 pounds in Class 3A at the 2020 state wrestling tournament. Greenlee emerged as a star as a sophomore, going 27-12 at 220 pounds. He placed fifth at state that season. As a junior Greenlee moved up to 285. Standing at 6-7 he took advantage of his tremendous length and athleticism and improved strength to overpower opponents all season, finishing with a 40-2 record. At state Greenlee showed he could get it done when the stakes were at their highest. Greenlee displayed tremendous discipline in his first match at state, defeating Dowling Catholic’s Charlie Nank by ultimate tiebreaker, 4-3. In the quarterfinals he whipped Waverly-Shell Rock’s Luke Walker, pinning Walker with a cradle a little over halfway into the second period. In the semifinals Greenlee again showed outstanding poise. He won another ultimate tiebreaker, this one by a 3-1 decision over Norwalk’s Maddux Borcherding-Johnson to reach the finals. In the finals Greenlee came up short against top-ranked and undefeated Griffin Liddle of Bettendorf by a 7-2 decision. With another year of growth Greenlee will be a major force for Ames in 2021. He expects to keep building more and more momentum over the offseason in order to make another run at a state championship.
