What to say about the Universe?

Where to start? Where to stop! As I attempt to talk about what I’ve learned about the wonders of the Universe, I feel defeated as there is so much to learn, comprehend, and absorb; and it's still all a mystery. Today’s spacecraft record images of exciting parts of our galaxy and other corners of the universe, giving us a clue of what's out there and the enormity of it all.

Occasionally, I visit NASA Solar Systems Exploration Our Galactic Neighborhood, it’s a great way to unwind for a moment and just watch any of the planets as they move through the solar system in real time. I have a good sense of how far a kilometre is, but visit Our Galactic Neighborhood, and you’ll see some mind-boggling numbers, I’m still trying to get my head around all the Astronomical Units posted there. 1 AU is the distance between the earth and the sun which is 148.57 million km. My favourite bewildering measurement is the speed of light, 300,000 km per second. Still trying to visualize that. And if you ever had the crazy notion of leaving it all behind and leaving the Milky Way, even travelling at the speed of light, it would take nearly a hundred thousand years! I never had a favourite movie until the movie Interstellar. The movie explores themes of human survival, sacrifice, love, and

Inspired by the Universe

the power of science and technology to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. It also delves into the theory of relativity and the concept of time dilation, which play a crucial role in the plot. It’s invigorating!

The mystery of the Universe expands with conversations about what else is out there that we can’t see and how the Universe is Consciousness. That’s when the real fun begins!

Welcome to an issue of intergalactic needlework! We made use of astronomy and astrology to bring you a springboard of ideas for creating your beautiful and one-of-a-kind projects.

Also in this issue, we define the skill levels in knitting with Cynthia MacDougall and crocheting with Ruth I. Forbes to give you a good sense of where you’re at and what you can work towards. Whether you're a beginner or experienced in your favourite needlecraft, you'll find plenty of exciting projects to try out! From shooting stars to planets, you'll find everything you need to make projects that you'll be proud to show off. Explore the outer limits of needlework fun!

If you ever feel uninspired, just look up and take counsel from our dazzling night sky.

Cheerfully,

The astronomy theme for this issue reminded me of a phrase my granddaughter and I share when she leaves to go home. After our hugs, I tell her, “I love you to the moon and back” and she answers with “I love you more than all the stars in the sky”. I knew she would love a tote

bag for sleepovers so I looked at how I could incorporate the Northern Lights, stars, bright moon and our special phrase into a tote bag. The features on my PFAFF® creative icon™ 2 sewing and embroidery machine made creating this unique tote bag so easy! – Betty

The Moon on the Sea Shimmers Wall Quilt

the same one; always the same verse. I think it was the only one he knew. My children and I would roll our eyes to the sky sometimes, but one of the verses stuck. And sometimes, at the most obscure moments, it pops into my head. It’s from “The Pirate’s Song” by José de Espronceda (1808-1842) and it is one of the best known of Spanish Romanticism.

It is a composition about freedom and independence.

José de Espronceda dedicated it to those marginalized by society. He wrote five poems in all in protest. “The Pirate’s Song” is one of them.

The loose translation of the verse I remember goes like this:

“The moon on the sea shimmers on the canvas (meaning the sails) the wind moans, and rises in soft movement waves of silver and blue…”

My husband and I are no longer married, but these verses bring really good memories of quiet times on board and lots of adventures.

Mars Jars

Socks

In the book Cosmos, Carl Sagan writes about an experiment he and his colleagues performed to test the possibility of life on Mars. They prepared chambers that simulated a martian environment and inoculated them with terrestrial micro-

organisms. Then they waited to see what would happen.

The chambers were called Mars Jars. They didn’t answer the question, 'Is there Life on Mars?' but it gave me an idea for the title of my socks.

I have always been fascinated with the stars and planets in our solar system since I can remember. My dad would help me find popular constellations on our family camping trips when I was a child. There is nothing like going out into the woods and staring up at that big beautiful night sky. This rug hooked cushion honours those family moments of being out in nature and being in awe of the night sky, and all the magic it brings. –Lynn
