Great Things are Happening: PWH® Q2 in Review

I hope everyone has had a successful first six months at your companies. PWH® had an especially great second quarter. Below is a recap of many great things happening!

PWH® and its members are becoming increasingly valued and recognized by our industry. In April, three of our PWH® founding members—Janis Dezso, Anne Eiting-Klamar, and Joan Eliasek—were inducted into the Medical Distribution Hall of Fame. We had a magical night celebrating them in Atlanta with many members from our healthcare industry in attendance. Proceeds from the event, in the amount of $12,500, were donated to PWH®. Thank you to Share Moving Media for that amazing donation!

PWH® is continuing to advance its mission by delivering value and resources. Our annual PWH® Leadership Summit was held May 1st through

the 3rd in San Antonio, TX and was a tremendous success. Thanks to many of you who were able to join. We had a record-breaking attendance—253! Attendees were empowered by two days of leadership speeches, workshops, and networking. The week was energizing and impactful, and I thank all of you who worked tirelessly to make it all happen. Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2024 PWH® Leadership Summit. It takes place in Louisville, KY, April 29-May 1, 2024. The Summit Committee is already beginning the important work of getting ready for another amazing event. Throughout the year all our committees are doing exciting work. Our Webinars and Educational Events continue to be a huge success. Visit our library of webinar content if you miss attending one in real time. I have found that library to be a lifesaver when I have conflicting calls that make it hard for me to attend on the exact date and time. We recently added two educational courses as well. The Cultural Inclusion & Diversity Committee launched a new web page (www.mypwh.org/ pwh-cultural-inclusion-diversity) with proactive tools and resources to help all of us advance our knowledge, insight and advocacy of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) no matter where we are on the journey. You’ll be empowered by thought provoking podcast like “The Will to Change: The Journey of Inclusive Leadership,” webinars, videos and much more. Be sure to visit the PWH® website for details and check out the next issue of the PWH ® Connect Journal for highlights of various important projects.

PWH ® is growing its membership. Currently, our organization stands at 799 members. Please look around you and see if anyone you know would benefit from joining PWH ® and engaging with the resources and opportunities our organization provides to develop culturally inclusive leadership. If we all encourage one person to join, our membership base would double. Consider it your challenge for Q3 to bring in one new member to share in realizing our special PWH ® mission.

With that, I hope everyone enjoys the final days of summer and refuel for the fall when tradeshows kick up again, end of year numbers are due, and kids go back to school. Whatever the season, I encourage you to continue to work on your own personal signature journeys, and always remember: You Control Your Destiny!

Forever in your service,

Leadership Insights for the Future

Highlights from the 2023 PWH® Leadership Summit

PWH® advances its mission of empowering women to lead and succeed in the healthcare industry in many ways, but especially through its annual PWH® Leadership Summit. The fifth Summit took place in San Antonio, Texas, May 1 – 3, 2023. Over 250 attendees built their personal brand, developed meaningful relationships within the industry and gained critical skills for leading into the future.

The PWH® Leadership Summit is an invaluable opportunity for industry leaders

(and aspiring leaders) to gain knowledge and insight into maximizing their career growth and development. Attendees enjoy education and networking events as well as mentoring opportunities and workshop activities. They also get to hear from keynote speakers and prominent industry leaders to apply learnings in their careers and personal life.

Education is an essential part of the Summit. It helps keep knowledge current, ensures that professionals remain

competitive in their field and allows for acquiring new skills. In case you were unable to join us, here are a few nuggets of insight from our general and breakout sessions.

Opening Keynote— Sponsored by Vizient

The opening keynote speaker, Judi Holler, a podcaster, best-selling author and entrepreneur, energized the audience with an interactive kick-off session, “Think Like a CEO and Take More Confident Action.”

4 Summer 2023 • PWH® Connect Journal • mypwh.org SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTS
Opening keynote speaker, Judi Holler, energized PWH® Leadership Summit attendees with an interactive kick-off session, “Think Like a CEO and Take More Confident Action.”

It featured improvisation techniques that allowed participants to think on their feet and make confident decisions, like CEOs do nearly constantly. Judi taught us to shut down self-doubt, step out of our comfort zones, and acknowledge and celebrate fear by changing the rules to celebrate our courage to live more balanced and successful lives.

PWH® Leadership Insights— Sponsored by Midmark

Our PWH® Leadership Insights series continued this year with keynotes from various industry leaders. Attendees were energized by thought-provoking presentations. Here is just a sample of the invaluable leadership and professional development insights industry leaders shared.

> Sanchia Patrick, Vice President of Strategic Marketing, Henry Schein, The Link Between Personal Brand & Purpose, “The power of brand is connected to purpose. Identify your purpose. Refine it. Draw close to it.”

> Rob Saron, President and Director/ SVP Global Distribution, Bovie Medical, Leading Through Change, “Take care of yourself. Focus on what matters. Do, schedule, delegate, eliminate.”

> Laura Reline, Vice President, Supplier Management, NDC, Inc., Powerful Partnerships, “Take time to nurture relationships; make authentic connections.” Also, “If you don’t have passion for what you do, find something new.”

> Stephen Downey, Chief Supply Chain Patient Support Services Officer, Cleveland Clinic, Workplace Joy & Motivation, “You control your conference room table. Control your joy and your strength.”

> Monica Davy, SVP, Chief Culture, Diversity & Impact Officer, Vizient, The Power of Authenticity, “Culture is how you feel on Sunday night going into Monday morning.” During a fun “snowball” activity, attendees identified something they hide at work—lack of confidence, anxiety, challenging relationships and health, to name a few. Attendees learned the power of showing up to work as their authentic selves.

Leadership Workshops

Several leadership workshops were held. These breakouts allowed attendees to engage and interact with facilitators and

Sponsored by GOJO

Tuesday’s breakout sessions ended with a Fireside Chat, “The Curious Will Climb to the Top,” sponsored by GOJO Industries and moderated by Patty Olsen, Chief People Officer for Vizient. During the conversation, Stephanie Hertzog, CEO North America Energy and Resource for

Sodexo, and Billy Abrams, President of Distributed Products for Medline, shared contrasting insights from inside and outside the industry, speaking about embracing what you don’t know and anchoring yourself in flexibility, rather than the status quo. They shared insights on creating career paths, mentors, investing in workforce and the importance of being a good listener.

Thank You for Advancing the PWH® Mission

Anne Eiting Klamar Leadership Award of Distinction— Congratulations Julee Prefer, President, Preferred Solutions, Inc., and PWH® Past Chair

be mentored by. This year’s recipient, Julee Prefer, has all of these qualities. Her nominator shared the following:

> Julee Prefer is an example for our PWH® members to follow. Aside from being a risk taker by owning her own company, she consults other companies in the healthcare industry. She is a constant professional in every situation and serves as a mentor to many members in the PWH® organization.

> Julee is one of the original PWH® Founding Members and a past chair. She continues to be a leader within the organization as an advisor to the board and through her advisory position to the PWH® Leadership Summit committee. She led the charge for the first PWH® Leadership Summit by creating its vision and leading the PWH® Board to plan, budget and execute the event. With her leadership and continued advisory role, PWH® has the only industry event focused on developing leaders in our industry.

The Anne Eiting Klamar Leadership Award of Distinction recognizes a woman who has experienced significant growth to become an accomplished leader in our industry. She is a woman who has catapulted her career, scope

of responsibility and professional development. She exudes confidence, integrity, and is well respected by the industry, her peers and her subordinates. She is committed to giving back and is a leader that others desire to follow and

> Julee is a perfect candidate for the Anne Eiting Klamar award because, much like Anne, she is a leader and mentor to many in the industry and continues to strive to make PWH® an organization that creates leaders in our industry to bring our vision of a culturally inclusive industry equally led by women to life.

make on others, motivating those who report to her and those to whom she reports with her energy and inspiration.

> Natasha’s inspiration through her leadership on Enclara’s Inclusion and Diversity Council enables partners across the organization to see her as a partner and an advocate.

> Natasha is a role model to so many of us when it comes to putting her family at center stage with support of her parents, in-laws, spouse and children. She leads by example when talking about a work life balance and making sure her team feels supported to also prioritize their own families and friends.

Jana Quinn was an inspiration to many women in our industry. This year’s Jana Quinn Inspiration Award recipient, Natasha Jackson, is no different. Here are some things that were said about this year’s recipient:

> Natasha Jackson serves as both a mentor and mentee in PWH® and is a member of the PWH® Cultural Inclusion & Diversity Committee. She is a servant leader who is willing to share her knowledge and experience with others

while recognizing that she too always has opportunity to grow professionally.

> Natasha champions PWH® at Enclara, expanding the membership of PWH® and increasing the footprint and visibility of professional women in healthcare at her company.

> Her direct manager stated that she enjoys the opportunity to have a front row seat to the impact Natasha continues to

> Natasha is the mother of three young boys, is active in her church, and volunteers in her community with underprivileged African American youth girls. She is a role model and a mentor to show them that, like her, they too can be successful professionally and in life. She lives by the fact that although individuals sometimes struggle in life with “barriers,” they do have the ability to set goals and achieve them. She promotes education to her young mentees and lets them know that they are supported.

> Natasha truly is a servant leader by working cross-functionally to support her team while keeping the overall enterprise goals and strategies in focus so that her team can put the client first (internal and external) while meeting expectations within the department.

Sandra Parker Leadership Scholarship—

at ECRI

Outstanding Contribution to PWH®

One of our newest scholarships is the Sandra Parker Leadership Scholarship, thanks to the generosity of Ken Spett, President and Chief Executive Officer at Graham-Field. The Sandra Parker Leadership Scholarship honors the memory and women’s leadership legacy of Sandi Parker. Sandi made many friends and had countless achievements within her more than forty years of involvement within the healthcare industry, but the accomplishment she was most proud of was her relationship with Professional Women in Healthcare®. PWH® is built upon a strong history of women leaders in the healthcare supply chain industry who continue to create a platform for

progressive leadership and mentoring for the next generation. Sandi was one of the seventeen founding members and the third chairwoman of the organization. She had a passion for helping to create leaders. She helped grow the organization from the seventeen original members to over seven hundred members today. Sandi leaves a legacy of strong leaders that she helped develop, mentor and grow.

PWH®, with funding from GrahamField, is honored to annually present one woman in the healthcare industry with a scholarship to the PWH® Leadership Summit. This year’s scholarship was given to Alysha Melnyk, Manager, Client Implementations and Onboarding at ECRI.

Recognition of outstanding contribution to the PWH® organization in 2023 goes to April Shomper, Chair of the PWH® Leadership Summit Committee and Event Director for Vizient as well as Brooke Elliot, Vice Chair of Organizational Leadership Development for the PWH® Strategic Oversight Committee and Founder of BE Complete Coaching & Consulting. Thank you!

PWH® Seeks a More Culturally Inclusion Industry: Member Mariam Bueno Shares Insights

PWH® is making a global impact with members across the world by demonstrating our commitment to creating a culturally inclusive healthcare industry equally led by women. In this issue, we spotlight Mariam Bueno, Quality Assurance Section Manager, B. Braun. The organization has been a strong supporter of PWH® and women’s leadership.

A PWH® Champion at B. Braun Inspired Our Spotlight Member to Join PWH®

Mariam was inspired to join PWH® in 2021 following an empowering conversation she had with a leader at her organization. She was reminded that as a woman you must stay true to yourself, stay connected to your inner self and find balance between your professional and personal life. Mariam was reminded that women can get caught up in working and focusing on others and lose sight of the importance of taking time for their own needs. When she received the invitation from B. Braun to join PWH®, she quickly responded and felt this was a way to invest in her professional development and growth. It was also an opportunity to connect, network and learn from other women.

Mariam Bueno Helps Realize the Mission of PHW®

Mariam serves on the PWH® Cultural Inclusion & Diversity Committee supporting education and awareness on the Special Projects Subcommittee. Mariam works with the chair and vice chair of the

committee to provide strategic direction on educational webinars, programming, tools and resources and emerging trends and topics. Mariam will be focused on helping other women, peers, colleagues and friends develop their leadership skills by sharing the learning from PWH ® webinars and events as well as tools and resources on the PWH ® website and Cultural Inclusion & Diversity webpage. Mariam will also be helping to increase awareness and advocacy of inclusive leadership with PWH ® members and recognition of key observances such as Asian

American Pacific Islander heritage month, Juneteenth and Hispanic heritage month.

Mariam Bueno is a Leader at B. Braun

Mariam is Quality Assurance Section Manager at B. Braun located in the Dominican Republic. The plant where she works performs the assembly process for IV sets. Mariam and her team plan, execute and oversee activities that maintain compliance within the quality system. Mariam has been with B. Braun for 10 years and has continued to advance her career within the organization.

Mariam Shares a Pivotal Career Moment

Mariam’s company faced a very important issue that was critical to resolve. The team put in many long hours and a lot of hard work. It was difficult and challenging, requiring Mariam to research and study potential ways to help solve the problem. Through the tireless efforts of the team and an investigation into the root cause, the team found corrective action.

This was a defining moment in Mariam’s career when she realized that all her preparation and the hard work that she had invested in her career over the years played a pivotal role in helping her and the team solve the issue. This experience helped her to see her inner strength and the power within her to solve big challenges. She is grateful to B. Braun for investing in her development and believing in her.

Mariam Shares Her Career Inspiration

At an early age Mariam wanted to be a doctor. By the time she reached high school her sights were set on majoring in marketing. Mariam wanted to travel and create commercials, videos and advertisements. Ultimately, she chose to pursue a career in engineering and quality which has been one of the most rewarding decisions she’s made.

Advice for Those New to the Healthcare Industry and PWH®

Mariam suggests getting involved early and participating in as many things as you can. She felt welcomed by PWH® members from day one. She spoke up about what she was interested in and found it easy to get involved. This allowed

her to connect with other women in PWH®, network, build relationships and learn how to apply the knowledge she gained. Mariam also suggests being open to different perspectives, learning from other women’s experiences, and being open to share. As you hear other women’s experiences and you share your experiences, you grow and help other women grow. Lastly, Mariam recommends joining a committee that you are passionate about or in an area where you want to further develop your leadership skills.

HIDA’s Congressional Relations Efforts Get a Boost from Kathryn DiBetetto

Kathryn DiBitetto recently joined the Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) as Vice President of Congressional Relations. She also helped lead HIDA’s annual Washington Summit. DiBitetto previously served as a government relations consultant to HIDA for the past 18 months.

“We have seen first-hand how Kathryn’s deep experience, leadership and knowledge of healthcare issues advances HIDA’s work on Capitol Hill,” said HIDA President and CEO Matthew J. Rowan.

Kathryn's leadership on Congressional Affairs will complement the work of Linda Rouse O'Neill, HIDA's Sr. Vice President for Supply Chain Policy, who is responsible for executive branch relations.

Previously, Kathryn served as the Senior Vice President of Government

Relations for 340B Health, a national non-profit association of 1,400 hospitals and health systems participating in a federal drug pricing program. In addition to her advocacy responsibilities, she was a member of the senior leadership team, responsible for strategic planning and other organization-wide duties. Prior to joining 340B Health, she served on Capitol Hill as Senior Legislative Assistant for Rep. Mike McMahon, for whom she focused on major legislation such as the Affordable Care Act and the 9-11 Health and Compensation Act. She previously represented and advocated for a variety of health care non-profit organizations.

As Vice President of Congressional Relations, Kathryn led HIDA’s annual Washington Summit and Fly-In during

the week of June 9th. Medical products distributors and manufacturers met with the offices of over 80 Senators and Representatives. The Summit was kicked off by keynote remarks by Congressman Richard Hudson (R-NC), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and a lead sponsor of the reauthorization of the Pandemic and AllHazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA).

In meetings on the Hill, HIDA members stressed several key issues essential to strengthening the medical supply chain. Key priorities include incentives for domestic manufacturing, promotion of public-private partnerships between government agencies and the medical products industry, a Fast Pass system to speed medical products through the transportation system, and preservation of supply chain provisions enacted by the PREVENT Pandemics Act.

2023 John Sasen Memorial Scholarship Winner—Nevele Martin

This year’s John Sasen Memorial Scholarship Winner is Nevele Martin, Sr. Director, Strategy and Operational Excellence, North America Distribution for Henry Schein. The scholarship honors the late John Sasen who was a passionate early advocate of PWH® by funding registration and travel expense to the HIDA Executive Conference.

“Thank you, PWH® for supporting my attendance of the 2023 HIDA Exec Conference in Bonita Springs, FL. It was a valuable experience that I am so grateful to have been a part of! The educational sessions provided great insights on the health care industry. The Economic Outlook session shared fact-based evidence on key market dynamics, delivered in a compelling and witty way. It was excellent to hear perspectives from industry leaders on the shifts in care settings, the impact of technology, and the continued rise of consumerism—all trends that have influenced all our businesses. The networking opportunities were invaluable, and I met some fantastic people. I also appreciated the various social events that allowed attendees to connect and build relationships in a more casual setting. Overall, the HIDA Executive Conference was a fantastic blend of knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities.”
