UK commissioned leading scientist Dr David Marlin to carry out an independent trial comparing some of the world’s most popular saddle pads across the full range of available materials on the

Dr Russell MacKechnieGuire, recently carried out a study aimed at quantifying kinematic differences in advanced level dressage horses when ridden in sitting trot compared with trotting inhand. It quite clearly showed that the movement of the caudal thoracic and lumbar spine were influenced by the rider when in sitting trot. When ridden, the horse has to manage the increase in dynamic forces and movement variability from the rider and saddle. He summarised that as the rider and saddle are positioned in the thoracic region the horse may, in order to increase the dynamic stability in this region, respond by increasing the stiffness of the spine which would result in a reduced spinal range of motion.

The dynamic testing, simulating ridden pressures were highly

significant as the Equitex pad reduced peak pressure by 84% and out-performed all the other premium saddle pads in the study. The data from this study is available on the Equitex UK website.

It’s

a terrible cliché to say that dressage was the real winner at the ECCO FEI World Dressage Championships, but on this occasion

I think it’s justified. An event allowed to move on from the spectre of the ill-fated World Equestrian Games and from the admirable but ultimately slightly empty-feeling Tokyo Olympics, Herning put our sport centre stage in front of large crowds of enthusiastic fans.

Although we continue to move to paid-for viewing and away from being on public display, one upside of social media is the easy sharing of stand-out performances. When the reaction to Lottie Fry’s freestyle from friends more accustomed to firing horses at timber or spruce at 30mph is ‘just wow’, you can see its impact.

That we have a double world champion and a clutch of medals from the team and the Para Dressage athletes is all the more impressive when you consider the soaring standards in our sport and significant investment being made in some countries.

We are also enjoying strength in depth, with brilliant results from our Junior, Young Rider and Pony teams at the recent European Championships.

With both Dressage and Para Dressage teams now qualified for the 2024 Olympics, the eyes of the outside world turn to what we can achieve in Paris. But it’s also worth thinking about how every tiny tot on a hairy Shetland, every pony clubber and every rider trotting down the centre line for their first test can get the chance to live out their dressage dreams. BD’s newly overhauled judging and coaching systems will give every member more opportunities, but Lottie Fry, Charlotte Dujardin, Gareth Hughes and Richard Davison are living proof that sheer hard work is also vital. We celebrate their success on P28-32; the World Para Dressage Championships was just concluding as we went to press and we look forward to covering it in full in our next issue.

NATIONAL CONVENTION RETURNS

The British Dressage National Convention returns to Hartpury College and University on 26 and 27 November, hosted by the ‘Best of British’.

IN MEMORIAM

The sport has lost a great supporter and competitor in Frances Rudge who sadly passed away on 3 July at the age of 78 following a brave battle with cancer.

Together with her late husband Mick Rudge, Frances ran the ever-popular Stubbing Court CDI in Derbyshire, until 2000, as well as being an international dressage rider herself. Prior to taking up dressage, Frances enjoyed threeday eventing alongside Mick. She was awarded a Bronze FEI Badge of Honour in 2003, of which she was extremely proud.

On behalf of the dressage community, British Dressage offers sincerest condolences to the family, friends and connections of Frances.

Tickets are now on sale, with in-person prices frozen at pre-pandemic levels in order to offer the best value training experience for all BD members.

Training will be delivered by a qualified tutor team, using interactive technology to capture evidence as learners progress. This will be complemented by experiences such as attending sessions at high profile events, yard visits and the integration of some existing BD qualifications.

NEW APPRENTICESHIPS LAUNCHED

British Dressage is to work with Sport Structures as its partner to support the delivery of an employment pathway of nationally recognised qualifications for apprentices working in the sport.

The BD Apprenticeship programme will cover the learning of practical equestrian skills, as well as providing a range of qualification pathways delivered in an equestrian setting. Routes can be chosen in a range of equestrian and business areas, from leadership and digital marketing to senior equine groom.

AGM ARRANGEMENTS

Where apprentices show a real passion or aptitude in a certain area, such as riding, coaching or events management, additional wraparound education will be provided to support their aspirations, creating a bespoke learning experience tailored to their needs.

As well as school leavers, the programme will support those wanting to return to the industry, or employers looking for a way to develop their existing staff. Those who are interested in working with horses, but have not had opportunity before, will now have an accessible route into the industry.

Most of the qualifications will be fully funded, with some employers receiving a grant to take on a new apprenticeship.

The Annual General Meeting of British Dressage will be held at Arena UK, Allington Lane, Allington, Lincolnshire, NG32 2EF on 6 October 2022 at 6:00pm, and will also be livestreamed on the BD website. For information about voting and putting questions to the meeting, see BD Action on p60.

ALL SET FOR THE NATIONALS

TheLeMieux National Dressage Championships is looming! Our annual ultimate celebration of dressage takes place in its new home at Somerford Park, Cheshire, from 15-18 September. The summer season comes to a dramatic close at our flagship event with the battle for the LeMieux National Dressage Champion title the highlight of four days of world class dressage.

From Prelim Silver to Grand Prix, 25 titles are awarded throughout the week to those who seek to add their names to the history books. Many famous faces have taken Nationals titles over the years –who will be this year’s champions?

The Equissage Pulse Para Gold Championships and KBIS Young Dressage Horse Championships are two further elements hotly anticipated by championship regulars who are treated to appearances from Team GBR stars current and future in both classes.

DAILY MASTERCLASSES ARE BACK...

with Sophie Wells and Sir Lee Pearson – fresh from another medalpacked World Para Dressage Championships – hosting Thursday and Friday, and 2021 National Champion Emile Faurie (above) will be joining us over the weekend for the Saturday and Sunday masterclasses. Emile has a stable full of exciting young prospects, so visitors can look forward to fascinating insights into producing talented horses as well as getting tips from the top.

Nationals shopping is a tradition and the shopping village offers a host of premium equestrian outlets, with Britain’s best brands from leather goods and saddlery to rider wear and gifts.

This is an opportunity to hear about the latest topics in the sport and meet the stars. We’ll be looking at the transition from Youth to Senior competition with Lewis Carrier and Dr Diana Fisher will be joining us to talk about rider safety and para dressage. The masterclass hosts will preview their sessions and there will be lots of other famous faces and riders.

We’ll be further enhancing the digital experience for spectators this year. With sustainability and our impact on the environment in mind, the event programme, start lists/results, nationals radio and podcast will all be easily accessible online, and based on feedback from the 2021 championships, via new QR code points across the showground.

around the LeMieux arena and plenty of seating at the Kudos and Vector arenas. The Andrews Bowen Pavilion offers prime, close up undercover viewing of arenas one and two from your table, with a variety of food and drink available to purchase to enjoy while watching the competition.

Iamjust back from a super week with our para team at the World Para Dressage Championships in Herning, Denmark where we collected a total of seven individual medals and our all important

qualification for Paris 2024. The competition was a tough one in all respects with hot weather and some incredible horses and riders from other nations.

Please see below an outline of the new pathway. The steps are:

Elements of the pathway can be completed in any order, with an assessment to be taken

after all elements are complete.

This year’s Bronze and Silver Summer Championships took place at Hartpury University and Hartpury College on the 23 – 24 August. We were delighted to work alongside the RDA to host the Grade 7 Championships, for riders who qualified at the RDA National Championships. A report will appear in our next issue.

BD PARA DEMO RIDE AT THE RDA CHAMPS

We were delighted to be invited to the RDA National Championships in July to showcase our sport. We had riders run through all the bronze para intro tests to an audience on the Friday evening.

This was a great success, and we plan on holding a demo ride at the Championships each year going forward.

NATASHA’S FAMILY AFFAIR

WHAT A YEAR 2022 HAS BEEN FOR NATASHA BAKER – AND IT’S NOT OVER YET. SHE’S BECOME MRS JACONELLI IN A FAIRY TALE WEDDING AND HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER TOKYO RIDE, KEYSTONE DAWN CHORUS, HAS GONE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH. THE ICING ON THE CAKE? SELECTION FOR THE FEI PARA DRESSAGE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. HELEN TRIGGS VISITED HER AT HOME TO SEE HOW LIFE IS TREATING HER.

Natasha Bakerin 2011, Natasha won gold in both the individual and freestyle grade II events and so began her career as one of Britain’s most successful Para athletes. She won gold medals at London, Rio and Tokyo, as well as setting new Paralympics records for grade II at London. She has achieved her

upper body movement returned, sections of her nervous system were permanently damaged leaving her with weakness and no feeling in her legs.

Intensive physiotherapy, huge family support and a strongwilled character improved her physical condition to the point

success without having a string of horses at her command. She is very matter-of-fact about her disability. “I’ve had it since I was 14 months old, so I don’t know anything different,” she says. She contracted transverse myelitis and overnight became unresponsive and couldn’t move, cry or talk. While her speech and

where now she can walk short distances on crutches but has to rely on using her voice and movements with her seat to communicate with her horses. She was also born without a thyroid so has to medicate daily.

Natasha mainly rides without stirrups. “I don’t have any sensation in my legs so my brain

can’t tell my legs to keep my heels down. I had a nasty accident and got dragged by the stirrup so I took them away for safety.”

However, Natasha has never been one to dwell on what she can’t do. “My mum and dad brought me up with a positive mental attitude,” she says. “Life’s too short to be sad or grumpy. Pick up on the positives even in a bad situation.”

Her family has always provided a strong support system. Mum Lorraine is groom and attends all international shows. Dad Phil is always on hand for help and driving duties. The yard is run by Shelby and there is a wider network of farriers, physios and nutritionists, (human and equine). Her trainers are Lisa Hopkins and Claire Gallimore who help

keep her current horse Keystone Dawn Chorus (Lottie) fit and finely tuned.

“Everything you do to improve counts, even if it’s just marginal gains,” says Natasha. She and Lorraine sit down at the beginning of the week and plan her schedule – Natasha has personal appearances, commentating and charity events to fit in around training, competing and having personal time.

Natasha and husband Marc Jaconelli have been together for seven years. He has a car detailing business with his team of contractors cleaning thousands of cars a year. As Natasha says he’s a perfectionist, it’s no surprise he gets roped in for cleaning the horsebox too! F

They are very sociable and Natasha loves to hold dinner parties to catch up with all the friends she’s made from different walks of life.

Horses have always been a strong feature of the Bakers’ family life. She is the fourth generation to be based on the family livery yard, just outside Uxbridge in Middlesex, and now lives nearby. It’s an unostentatious place, with

whitewashed stables, surrounded by lush paddocks. Yet the tack room boasts mementoes of London, Rio and Tokyo.

Mum Lorraine had horses, and showed at HOYS, and one of her grand-dads was a carriage driver. Natasha says: “I started having little rides in a basket saddle before I could walk and then begged my parents for a pony of my own. I had to wait months until they were sure I was serious about riding.”

Natasha was enrolled in the South Bucks RDA at Fulmer. “I started out on the smaller ponies and after 18 months graduated to Forester, a cheeky New Forest pony. He taught me how to get a horse into an outline. He also bucked me off a lot but my parents just dusted me off and put me back on!”

Natasha was spotted by BD’s Jane Goldsmith when she was 11 and entered into the pilot year of the World Class programme.

“This gave me access to top trainers and intensive training and helped me develop so much. It was a stepping stone which has shaped my life.”

From that early start, Natasha has remained on the British squad for 21 years – a great achievement. F

“I STARTED HAVING LITTLE RIDES IN A BASKET SADDLE BEFORE I COULD WALK”

Her first really competitive horse was Wald Minor (Woody) who had been competed at Intermediate I by Ulrik Molgaard. Her most successful horse (so far) has been Cabral who was her mount from 2009 to 2016.

Natasha has been lucky to have the support of dressage judge Christian Landolt, the original owner of her first gold medalist, Cabral. When she first saw the then eight-year-old, Christian had promised him to another rider. She and Christian kept in touch and he offered her the ride. The rest is, as they say, history.

“Cabral was naturally forward and wanted to work with me.

Para riders need horses to be forward going but not naughty –all my horses have been like this. I can’t motivate the horse with my legs so they have to go for themselves.”

Natasha’s latest partner is the beautiful Dimaggio mare, Keystone Dawn Chorus (Lottie), bred in Britain by Suzanne Lavandera in 2011. In 2019, Natasha had put out on Facebook that she was looking for a new horse and Beth Bainbridge responded about

Lottie who she had bought as a young horse and produced. “When I went to try her Storm Gareth was raging, the wind was roaring and the rain was horizontal – Lottie didn’t put a foot wrong.

“She’s got an amazing temperament and we clicked straightaway. You would never know when she’s in season. She’s always the same. She goes out in the field and hacks on the roads,” explains Natasha. Lottie was purchased by the Bakers with the

Orlando when she was nine by the charity Dreamflights and has subsequently worked with them to provide the same opportunity for other children. She is also a strong supporter of We The 15 which is a global sports human rights movement to make people with disabilities more visible.

“Every time I leave home I face some kind of ‘able-ism’. As soon as people see a wheelchair, you become invisible. People lean over you, invade your personal space. It’s important to show people that everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses.”

So what does the future hold for our Paralympic champion?

SYMPTOMS OF A BADLYFITTING BRIDLE

• Tightness around the headpiece in the poll area behind the ears

• Sweaty head and rubbing after taking the bridle off

• Crossing the jaw

• Tongue issues – the horse is moving its tongue around the bit to get comfortable

• Obviously raised veins in the face

• Tilting of the head

• Head shaking, nose flicking

Asriders and competitors, we all strive for a happy, comfortable horse who is able to perform at his best. We now know that bit and bridle fit can have a huge impact on your horse’s way of going, which is why a qualified bit and bridle fitter should now be a regular part of your horse’s health care team.

Charlotte Warman is a qualified Lantra bit and bridle fitter and BD steward. While the general standard of bridle and bit fit is high in the horses she sees at competitions, there are improvements that can still be made.

“Many riders are now using anatomical bridles which are a gamechanger in horse welfare,” she says. “Mostly, riders have taken on board the advice about correct bridle fit, but I do still sometimes ask a rider if they want to reassess the tightness of their nosebands before they go in the ring.”

Charlotte would also love to see bridles sold in components instead of as a whole bridle.

HEAD START

RIDERS ARE AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT SADDLE FIT, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FIT OF THEIR HORSE’S BRIDLE AND BIT? STEPHANIE BATEMAN LOOKS AT THE IMPACT A BADLY FITTING BRIDLE AND BIT CAN HAVE ON PERFORMANCE, AND HOW TO ENSURE THEY’RE THE CORRECT FIT FOR YOUR HORSE.

“Horses are every shape and size like humans, so expecting them to fit into three sizes (pony, cob and full) is not realistic,” she says. “We need to be able to buy each part of the bridle in whatever size is required. It would save people a lot of money.”

She also advises that people get a bridle fitted by a qualified bridle fitter.

“Physios are starting to see a relationship between a tight-fitting bridle and tightness behind the ears and around the poll area, so assessing bridle fit should be just as important as checking the fit of a saddle,” she says.

FIT FOR A KING Catherine Baker and Frances Roche, SMS qualified bridle fitters and bridle fitting lecturers.

“Riders are becoming more aware that a well-fitting bit and bridle have a direct impact upon the welfare and performance of their horse,” they say. “It is a vast topic and it can get somewhat confusing for riders, so here are a few key points…”

HEADPIECE

The headpiece should sit comfortably over the poll and around the bulbs of the ears.

The idea of the anatomical bridle is that they are better shaped around the ears and other facial features in an aim to reduce peak pressures, and therefore should be more comfortable. However, they do need to be fitted to each individual horse. We very often see the shaping on these bridles situated in the wrong position, causing more pressure rather than less. This does not mean the bridle is a poor design but possibly poor sizing or incorrectly fitted.

The anatomy of the head and neck, along with the use of a bit, means that the headpiece will always want to sit against the ears but, if the headpiece is the correct shape and fit, there will be less pressure.

NOSEBAND

The noseband needs to be fitted at the correct height for its purpose.

A cavesson or crank noseband should be fitted with two fingers space below the facial crest and with any noseband that sits below the bit, the front should not sit so low that it impedes the soft part of the nostril. The cheek straps should not come across the facial crest and any buckles should be clear of the lips or the bony area under the jaw.

Research has led to the redesign of the drop noseband with curved shaping or two ring styles being more humane.

BROWBAND

The browband should not be so short so that it is pulling the headpiece forward against the bulbs of the ears, nor should it be so long that it gapes at the front.

Shaped browbands are very much in vogue nowadays but, whichever style is selected it is key to make sure that they do not apply pressure around the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ).

Crucially, any type of noseband should be fitted so it is not ‘keeping the horse’s mouth closed’ and you should be able to get at least two adult fingers (or the ISES tape gauge), shown inset right under the noseband on the front of the nasal bone regardless of the style of noseband being used. F

“ASSESSING BRIDLE FIT SHOULD BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS CHECKING THE FIT OF A SADDLE”

When international rider Ruth Hole switched Easy VZ into a Fairfax Performance double bridle at the beginning of 2020, it was a turning point in his development.

“When Easy arrived just under five years ago, it was as if he had fallen out of love with dressage,” says Ruth. “He was training at Elementary but I couldn’t get him to settle into a contact and he never really felt as if he wanted to go forward.

“By the time we had progressed to Prix St Georges, I had been experimenting with a couple of different snaffle bridles and a double to try to achieve a better feel. I liked the idea of the Fairfax bridles, particularly the fact that each component is available individually, which allows you to tailor-make a bridle to the shape of the horse’s head. “His increased freedom of movement allowed me to put him in postures that created better muscle development and his whole body has changed as a result.

“The big difference is that the Fairfax Performance bridle works by relieving pressure at key areas on the horse’s head and he just feels more comfortable and therefore able to move more freely.

“Just over a year later, he’s a completely different animal – so much stronger and more expressive – and we are scoring 70% at Grand Prix. We have a better connection and it’s as if I can move him around more.”

CHEEKPIECES

The cheek buckles should sit roughly level with the corner of the eye holding the bit or bits in the correct position.

The most common error by far is cheek pieces too long. This can mean that buckles are crowded up underneath the browband, forcing it onto the ears creating pressure against the TMJ. This can cause discomfort, behavioural and performance issues.

Larger bit rings may mean you need shorter cheeks.

The bit should be the correct width and height. There are so many different types of bit available that selecting the right bit and fitting it correctly can be tricky. Fortunately, there are many trained and experienced bit fitters to help riders and it is recommended that you choose one who carries plenty of stock, and who will follow up with a good after sales service. WALK THIS WAY

Thewalk is a ‘tender’ pace and to get the best out of it, will need to be treated differently from the trot and canter. In the previous two articles, bringing out the ultimate talent of a horse meant developing power and expression. These would damage the walk. Doing less, at the beginning only asking for minimal – if any –contact, as long as there is a forward tendency and then advancing gradually is essential. There are two important reasons for this:

• T here is no impulsion in the walk, no spring or moment of suspension to aid power. The FEI recommends that we talk about activity and the desire to move forward in the walk.

• T he contact is very delicate and an uneven one or a strong one will have repercussions through the horse’s body and lead to irregularity and restricting freedom.

As for the other two paces fundamental needs are the scales of training (other than impulsion), the nurturing of back movement to be supple and swinging, and forwardness in a tempo that brings out the best in the quality and does not lead to either sluggishness or rushing and stiffening.

COMMONPLACE PROBLEMS

Walks with restricted or irregular steps are often seen in the arena and once these creep into a horse’s way of going it is difficult to get rid of them.

It is rare for a horse to have an irregular walk by nature although limited freedom is more usual. The development of defects is almost always due to poor training. For the judges the quality of the walk is one of the best indicators of how well the horse has been trained.

ACHIEVING THE GOALS

It is important that the goals for any pace, become a clear image, together with the feel in the saddle for the rider/trainer. To develop

these involves some theory, watching horses with good walks and if the opportunity arises, riding them.

THE THEORY

This is the sequence of the steps when the four legs move separately to produce four beats that have an equal interval between each of

them. Sometimes two feet are on the ground and at other times three. The sequence is right fore, left hind, left front, right hind.

Another important goal is that the steps of the front leg pair are of equal length, as are the hind leg pair and are not long/short in front or behind.

THE IMAGE

The important image is of a body in which the movement flows through it, that the musculature is supple, the joints flexible and ultimately in extensions is like a big cat moving and eating up the ground.

Jo Hinnemann’s image is helpful: “When the hind leg moves forward it should drive the front leg forward, so to speak, almost touching it”.

The check on regularity is to be able to see a stage when a foreleg and hindleg on the same side form a V. If this V becomes or moves towards parallel fore and hind this is the visual indication that the intervals between the four beats are no longer equal and the walk has become irregular.

COMMON REASONS FOR NOT ACHIEVING THE GOALS:

• Not finding the optimum tempo. Rushing and creating tension or so slow the body is not activated

• I nsufficient attention paid to suppleness, especially in the back, as this restricts the throughness and flow of movement

• A contact that has a backward tendency restricting freedom and a contact that does not follow the nodding of the head to allow the alternate muscle movement through the back

• L ack of straightness that leads to uneven contact in the hands, tilting and uneven movement

• Collection achieved by holding the horse back and if the horse has neither the training or strength to maintain suppleness and activity.

Note that each of the above is linked to a scale of training

VARIATIONS IN THE WALK

Free walk on a long rein: the horse has complete freedom to lower and stretch out its head and neck while the rider maintains a very light contact. The horse marches positively forwards without haste, the hind feet touching the ground in front of the footprints of the forefeet.

Medium walk: a light contact allowing the natural movement of the head and neck. The steps are unconstrained and regular with the hind feet overtracking those of the front feet. The horse is relaxed, moving forward with determined steps.

Collected walk: the steps are shorter than in the medium and are achieved by maintaining or even increasing activity as the joints flex, the strides higher, and the weight transferred towards the hind quarters.

Extended walk: the horse is allowed to stretch forward and lengthen its frame and strides as far as is possible whilst maintaining a contact and control of the poll. The nose must be clearly in front of the vertical.

TRAINING

Primary requirements are not to ask for more than is there by nature and being aware of any hazards in the way of going or external conditions that might damage this.

Horses that are weak and unbalanced often find it difficult to march positively forward towards the bit. Any fiddling with the front end is detrimental and the goal is a very light forward tending contact following the natural head movement.

If the hands do not move with the natural head nodding, then the impulse from the hindquarters over the back and neck cannot come through and the back will stiffen. The movement of the back is crucial for freedom of the strides and for the momentum to transfer through the whole body. A restricted, even irregular walk is the result of holding an immovable contact.

Momentum is generated by the hindquarters. Unresponsive horses benefit from transitions, mainly trot/walk or interesting surroundings (hacking, pole work), working with another horse, a stronger aid with the leg or a tap with the whip and then a reward with voice or pat if they respond.

Kicking every stride deadens responsiveness. Suppling of the back, and as a result regularity, is helped by lateral work. Turns on the forehand and leg yield can be done in the early stages and as a horse advances shoulder in, half pass and travers and all without letting the tempo slow.

As the horse gets stronger and more consistently walking forward to the bit, keep the horse in this frame of mind when hacking or relaxing. In a training session practice the various test walks for short periods especially the longer rein walks.

As the horse gets closer to medium level work, collection is introduced. It is in collection when many horses lose their regularity, so the introduction of it needs to be thoughtful. Following the goals for collection start to ask for it by riding forwards

with the same tempo and activity into shorter and higher steps but only a few strides. Whenever the horse tightens and loses regularity go into lateral or longer steps to promote suppleness. Developing collection is a slow process with steady progression. T

FORAGE MATTERS

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOW HAY AND HAYLAGE ARE GROWN, HARVESTED AND PACKED, AND THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF VARIOUS GRASSES CAN HELP CHOOSE THE RIGHT FORAGE FOR YOUR HORSE, EXPLAINS HORSEHAGE’S MARK WESTAWAY .

Competitionhorses should receive a forage-based diet to ensure digestive health, well-being and optimal performance. There are many dressage horses and ponies that require a lower starch and sugar diet, but with a good source of digestible energy to maintain performance.

If you select the right forage for the requirements of the horse and ensure you feed a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement, many horses and ponies do not need anything extra. It is important to make all changes gradually and feed in accordance to size and workload of the horse. Remember small amounts of rain can make a difference to grass growth and calculating how much a grass a horse eats is extremely difficult.

Haylage and hay vary significantly in the production, preservation methods, nutritional value and hygiene content offered. Many forages are not accurately tested for their feed value, which makes it difficult to maintain a consistent diet for your horse and in turn could hinder their performance.

Hay is typically cut from permanent pasture meadow grasses, with a wide variety of grasses and other species (meadow hays) or from specialist seed leys with a known composition of grasses, usually ryegrass-based (seed hays). The grasses are usually cut and air dried in the field, although some producers do use artificial barn drying methods.

Hay is cut when the grass reaches a suitable level of maturity. If the weather permits this will be when 50% of the grass has a seed head, which usually occurs between June and August. The grass relies on several days of warm dry weather to allow water to be lost to ensure the moisture level is low enough before baling and prevent the future development of fungal spores and other microbial activity that could spoil the hay. Many of the water-soluble nutrients such as B vitamins and anti-oxidants are lost from hay during the drying phase of production. These vitamins are important for energy production, immune system support and the production of the oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Further nutrients can be lost through the process of soaking the hay.

Hay will also contain higher levels of dust. Dust is a mixture of broken-down plant material, fungal spores, bacteria and

microorganisms. A higher moisture level at baling can lead to the proliferation of mould spores during storage. This will make the hay incredibly dusty and can lead to respiratory diseases and poor performance.

Haylage will maintain more nutrients than hay, and the fermentation process converts the water-soluble carbohydrates (sugars) into volatile fatty acids which are used as an energy source by the horse. The fermentation process lowers sugar levels and increases the digestibility of the forage. Haylage is dust-free and will help to maintain and improve respiratory health.

Although traditional haylage is wrapped, the packaging can be prone to holes, increasing the chance of bacteria, fungi and mould entering the bales, which often means wastage or limited storage time.

HorseHage packaging is double lined to reduce the risk of mould. The gases produced in the fermentation process are able to escape through the semi permeable outer shell, however air is unable to enter the bale. This packing process also contributes to the stability of the HorseHage products and means it can be kept safely unopened for up to 18 months. HorseHage can be stored outside on pallets and the bale size means they are easy to handle at the yard or away at competitions.

Sometimes I hear the owners discussing their forage: “I have a lovely haylage, it is really dry”. The likelihood is this is wrapped hay and has not been through any kind of fermentation process, which means the sugar content

could be around 8-12% and in some cases higher. Unfortunately, these bales are mis-sold, usually at higher prices than standard hay and are often not as palatable.

HorseHage comes in four varieties – Rye Grass, High Fibre (made from selected rye grasses that have been allowed to mature to maintain their high fibre, low protein content), Timothy and Alfalfa. Due to the fermentation process HorseHage is naturally high in fibre and low in sugar ensuring energy levels are available for training and competition. It contains no chemicals, additives, mould inhibitors and inoculants, flavourings or molasses.

Feeding and nutrition can play a significant role in the onset and management of laminitis which can be mechanical, inflammatory or metabolic caused by an endocrine disorder such as EMS or Cushings (PPID). Excessive dietary calories from starch and sugar are known to cause a problem to horses that have an abnormal insulin response to a normal physiologic process such as eating. HorseHage Timothy and High Fibre are suitable for horses prone to Laminitis due to their low starch and sugar levels. Our fields are cultivated

and reseeded every two or three years with specific grass leys or Alfalfa to maintain consistent nutrient and fibre levels and to minimise weeds. We go to considerable lengths to ensure the grass and alfalfa is at the optimum level of growth and moisture content of 35-45%.

COMPETITION HORSES SHOULD RECEIVE A FORAGE-BASED DIET TO ENSURE DIGESTIVE HEALTH, WELLBEING AND OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE

DETECTIVE WORK

Veterinarysurgeon Juliette Edmonds emphasises that lameness diagnosis should always be done on an individual basis, taking into consideration the horse’s conformation, history and workload, plus the owner’s circumstances and aspirations.

“How we proceed with investigations can often depend on what the horse is doing – are you in the middle of a competition season with a championship ahead? Or is the horse mainly a happy hacker, or due to have some time off? We may need to get to the cause quickly or see if rest or treatment such as physiotherapy can resolve it.

“It can also depend on the owner’s finances to an extent. It’s important bear in mind the cost of investigation and the horse’s insurance status,” she points out.

“First, we need to establish if there is an underlying cause or a condition that has led to lameness or any other issue that has resulted in the owner calling out the vet,” Juliette explains.

“Often we will visit a horse that the owner does not perceive as actually lame but has changed its behaviour, perhaps bucking or not wanting to go forward, for example. Lameness or another orthopaedic condition may be factors.”

She adds that some conditions can also be related, highlighting the importance of looking at the horse’s history.

“Lower back pain and slight hind leg lameness often go together – resolve one and the other can also improve.”

Initial examinations include trotting up on a hard and soft surface, orthopaedic assessment, and flexion tests. Juliette points out that it may be useful to see the horse with a saddle on or being ridden.

“Sometimes the horse’s demeanour can change as soon as you put the saddle on, or we can get a better idea of the whole picture when we see the horse ridden, even if there is nothing to see on the ground.”

She adds that if the issue is more apparent when the horse is tacked up and ridden, a check by an SMS qualified saddle fitter can be a good course of action.

Under discussion with the owner, the next step is to consider further investigation.

This will be carried out at the surgery, Juliette explains.

“Here we can carry out nerve blocks, xrays and scans, using a methodical approach and consistent surfaces and with vet nurses who are used to handling and trotting horses up for inspection.” F

It can also be useful to gastroscope, she points out.

“Ulcers are triggered by stress which can be caused by pain, and can lead to the behaviours we are trying to investigate. You can treat the ulcers, but if you don’t address the pain as well, they will come back.”

Nerve blocks can be used alongside more visible signs such as a swollen joint to establish the site of the problem for targeted imaging, although they can’t get into bone or into all ligaments – here they may identify the area but not the specific structure.

A new piece of equipment can be useful to reduce uncertainty, she adds.

“The Equinosis with Lameness Locator is a gait analysis system which uses three sensors – one on the poll, a second on top of the pelvis and the third on the off-fore pastern to provide stride calibration. It offers analysis of small variations from the normal gait at walk and trot, and is more specific than the human eye.

“It can also indicate whether the lameness occurs as the

foot leaves the ground (push off) or on impact and can be used on a circle and take into account different surfaces.”

Where the horse has been nerve blocked, this data can be input to the software and the percentage of improvement shown.

“Equinosis gives a vet reassurance when looking at subtle lameness, or where a horse with multiple issues will show only a small change after a nerve block,” Juliette comments. “In this case it can also show which lameness is most influential – we know that soreness in one place can lead to soreness in another.”

The technique can also be used on subsequent occasions and the results compared to show changes over time.

Once the site of the lameness is identified, vets can concentrate on imaging.

“Joints are x-rayed or scanned, with ultrasound used on soft tissue. Feet can also be radiographed for bony changes, although soft tissue or minor bony problems won’t show. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful for foot pain. In the past, anything at the back of the foot was believed to be navicular disease, but we now know there are other ailments in this area that can be successfully treated.”

MRI scans will also show up multiple issues and help establish which are most significant.

“This helps with guiding treatment and also with prognosis – MRI will give you an idea whether to medicate joints, consider surgery or simply rest, helping to indicate how successful these approaches will be.”

Juliette points out that there are many structures within the stifle joint which are not fully accessible on a scan, so anaesthetising the horse in order to perform arthoscopy can be useful to examine the joint more fully.

“Again we always bear in mind the prognosis and the horse’s ability to return to its previous job or a new one.”

Bone scans are offered to show areas of increased activity in the skeleton, but then require further investigation to see if ‘hot spots’ are significant.

“You may need to block the area to see if there is any improvement. It can be useful for kissing spines, leading to treatment to see if what is shown is causing the lameness.”

Similarly x-rays can’t always be taken on face value.

“When vetting a horse for example, it’s important not to over-interpret x-rays if the horse is sound,” she comments.

Investigation may not always lead to an expensive course of treatment, Juliette emphasises. “Some conditions can be improved with rest and physiotherapy if more serious concerns can be ruled out. For example we performed a bone scan on a horse with an extremely sore neck, but the scan was clear. The horse just needed physiotherapy for a torn muscle and after some time off returned to full work.”

PETPLAN EQUINE OFFERS ME PEACE OF MIND

Katie Elliott noticed that her laidback Irish draught cross gelding Samson was acting out of character. “Under saddle he started to look slightly unlevel but when I asked friends to watch him, they thought he seemed fine; but I knew something wasn’t right. Alarm bells started to ring when he began bucking and biting, it was so unlike him,” remarked Katie. “This prompted me to call the vet out, I was so worried.”

During the first visit to Katie and Sam, the vet carried out standard flexion and lameness tests. “The vet was baffled. Sam wasn’t showing clear lameness in one leg, so she came back and scanned him,” commented Katie. Several scans and nerve blocks later the vet discovered Sam had thickening of his annular ligaments. “I had anticipated the standard box rest and a couple courses of Bute and that he would then be back on form in no time. I was stunned when the vet said he needed an operation.”

Luckily Sam was only in hospital for two days before Katie was allowed to bring him home and start the long road to recovery.

“His rehabilitation started with two weeks box rest, he was then allowed out to graze in a postage stamp-sized paddock. This

gradually increased to hand walking and grazing, which he really wasn’t a fan of,” explained Katie. “We had to build his exercise back up, only walking to begin with and then slowly increasing the pace. Unfortunately, we did have a little setback. When we moved on to doing a few minutes of trot work he went lame again despite having his joints injected. Sam then went back to reduced turnout and eight more weeks off.”

Sam is now fully recovered, “I am quite careful with him, as I never want to see him go through something like that again. I love having my best friend back and feeling so well.”

Long-gone are the days when our autumn/ winter yard gear was pretty much restricted to our ‘slightly warmer’ navy corduroy jods or breeches and a Puffa coat with zip-off sleeves – both then the height of fashion. Today, there’s so much more choice in terms of style, fabric, colour, and technical detail.

She says considering the environment has become important, so using fabrics which contain recycled plastics, choosing high performance fibre rather than down, and using environmentally-friendly dyes, but design is still key. “They are designing for practicality and everything has to be functional.”

That’s very much the thinking of Sarah Gibson, senior designer for LeMieux. While it is famed for its colourful seasonal collections – this autumn’s being sienna (burnt orange), fig (dark purple) and marine (deep teal) – the design process for its yard and riding wear is very thorough.

Every clothing collection is designed in-house and the company’s design team works on the patterns and measurements, then develops the initial samples to the final item. Their focus is on ensuring everything is practical for riding, comfortable and stylish, including features such two-way zips.

Practicality for everyday wear is crucial. All garments are thoroughly tested by LeMieux team members who ride, and final samples are also given to professional riders to wear, wash and then provide feedback before the products are manufactured and launched.

made from a fabric which has a warm and soft feel, but it’s also crucial that it has stretch, wears well without pilling and that it doesn’t shed.

“The fabric for this hoodie took a long time to source, as the choice of fabric can make or break a garment. The technology and construction of fabrics has changed considerably and there’s much more focus on breathability and moisture wicking.

“For autumn and winter, we put a lot of focus on the rider being warm, unrestricted, comfortable and wearing breathable fabrics –layering, but still feeling light.”

The new hybrid jacket in this season’s AW22 collection features a padded front with brushed jersey arms, making it a good layering piece, says the company. A return of last year’s best-selling long waterproof riding coat this autumn is complemented by a new short waterproof riding coat, giving riders more options, while the firm’s Drytex breeches and legwear are also in the autumn/

winter range, meaning riders can be dry and warm from head to toe.

Besides the focus on practicality and rider comfort, LeMieux is also using eco-friendly options where possible. All padded coats, jackets and gilets are filled with sustainable plant-based Du Pont filling, providing a warm and more sustainable alternative to down filling, it says.

For Premier Equine, its most popular autumn and winter legwear options are its water-repellent breeches with full gel seat.

“I tend to wear gilets instead of coats/jackets for riding, I feel too restricted otherwise. I just add base layers in the colder weather, the colder the weather the more base layers. I add overtrousers when weather is really cold, and HY fleece-lined showerproof breeches for winter mornings.”

Available in autumn colours such as walnut, anthracite and olive, the company says the fabric it uses for these helps to repel water and stains while also providing UVA protection.

And while riding tights with a grippy seat and phone pocket are big sellers for Cheshire based online retailer Equissentials Dressage, it is finding customers are now asking for a more traditional, structured breech with a more traditional seat.

This is something that Liz is seeing at Cavelleria Toscana too: “While we have customers who love riding tights and base layers, we are finding things are coming full circle and people are looking at less grippy

seats. These are synthetic now and are easier to wash and look after.”

Ease of washing and quick-drying is essential for everyday riding wear, says The Centre Line’s Claire Hubbard. She rigorously tested the Cavaleros breeches and riding tights she sells before agreeing to stock them. “They also have back support built in, which is really important to ensure you are sitting correctly. They do give fantastic support.”

She says traditional, muted colours sell best, and is also now stocking a range of base layers which will come in grey and white, blue and white, and grey and black. Like the Cavaleros legwear, they are performance-focused and will also double-up as competition shirts.

Base layers, whether from retailers like Decathlon or M&S, or equestrian specialists, have become very popular. Their sweatwicking properties, easy care and comfort make them ideal for layering with a gilet or jacket, particularly as they are available in everything from summer to thermal weights. For Equissentials Dressage customers, Fager Equestrian base layers are popular, and it also sells a lot of hoodies and zip-up mid-

layers, particularly from Pikeur, Equestrian Stockholm and Equito.

For colder mornings, gilets with an autumn or winter weight fill are popular, and Liz from Cavelleria Toscana says it offers gilets and coats in different thicknesses. Some have ultra-thin perforated backs and are vented down the side to help with keeping riders cool, and all are fully breathable.

Premier Equine, while offering a range of lightweight jackets, gilets and fleeces, also finds its midweight jackets are popular. These all have 100g fill, are breathable and Teflon coated to help create a waterproof membrane, it says.

So whether you are often too hot, or far too cold, there are plenty of options for autumn and winter yard and everyday riding gear. Whatever your budget or requirements, there is so much more choice than the days when it was either a cold wax jacket or a much-loved Puffa.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE, IT’S SAID, SOMETHING CERTAINLY TRUE WHEN TRAINING HORSES. ANDREA OAKES LOOKS AT ITS CHALLENGES AND HOW RIDERS CAN BENEFIT FROM TAKING A STEP BACK.

Steady, incremental progress

is considered a cornerstone of dressage, so why is it sometimes so difficult to keep our cool – either in the moment, as we’re schooling, or over a season when things aren’t happening as quickly as we’d like them to?

“Impatience is rooted in frustration,” says sport and exercise psychologist Professor Moira Lafferty, who explains that this emotion can be defined as feeling unwilling to wait, exhibiting negative behaviours if we’re made to wait or going right ahead and doing something anyway. “Typically, we have a goal and we’ve set a time frame, but we realise it’s going to take longer to get there. We might enter a state of stress, with shallow breathing and tension, and we’re less able to work within the environment, either logically or rationally.”

When training, impatience can arise if it takes longer than expected for a movement to become established or a level to be reached.

“This is especially common if a rider is comparing a horse to one they’ve trained previously, as they realise the process might take more investment than they first thought,” says Moira. “Impatience can be heightened if a rider is also engaging in social comparison, measuring themselves against others.”

SEEKING SOLUTIONS

Alice Oppenheimer has taken many horses to Grand Prix and agrees that patience can be tested at any level.

“It can be frustrating if you feel you’ve tried everything in your toolbox to find a solution,” she says. “But it’s so important to remember that every horse is an individual and you have to find out what works with each. As

the rider, we’re the side of the partnership with the ability to reason, to step back and go away to think about what’s not working and why. There may not be a eureka moment. Sometimes, it does take time.

“What I have learned over the years is that no ride is better than a bad ride,” she says, suggesting that it might be better to walk away if a rough day at work has left you short of patience. “There have been times when I’ve not even got on. It’s also worth remembering that we are supposed to enjoy this. Even as professional riders, there’s still the love of the horse. We always need to go back to that.”

According to Grand Prix rider and trainer Anna Ross, impatience can be down to a lack of confidence.

“Frustration can arise with people who feel they have something to prove,” she says. “With experience, you tend to develop more patience. You know that such-and-such a horse took two years to get his flying changes, for example, and you understand that it takes time.

“Be flexible with training,” she adds. “You might have an idea for a session, of what to work on, but there’s no guarantee the horse will want to join in. Going through the check list – is he bending and left and right, for example, and on the aids – will lead you to work on the right things. And if you feel incapable of not turning schooling into a three-hour session, then simply don’t go in the arena. Cross-training is important, so go for a hack instead. Don’t put temptation in your path.”

When training a movement, Anna explains, less is often more.

“A rider’s competitive urge can sometimes override common sense,” she says. “Simply

repeating something over and over won’t make a difference. If a horse is struggling with his flying changes and he suddenly gets it, leave it there. “A horse who is massively stressed out will rarely learn anything that he can later remember; you might hit upon it, but if he can’t process the ‘why’ then he might not be able to repeat it. In the long term, it’s better to chip away with little and often.”

WAITING GAME

Becky Moody, who rides and trains at a variety of levels, admits that playing a waiting game can be more challenging for the onehorse owner.

“It’s much easier if you’re lucky enough to have quite a few to ride,” she says. “You might need a lot of patience until a horse is mentally at ease with something or physically stronger, but this is more difficult if you have just the one and all the focus is on him.

“Occasionally, a horse steps up easily from one level to the next, but with nearly every one there’s something, at some point, that you have to take your time with,” she says. “It really helps if you have a good support team, with a coach you can really trust, so you can talk about things: this is where we’re at, this is going better but this is just not happening.

“It doesn’t necessarily need to be the coach – a mentor or a friend who has more experience can help,” she adds. “It’s all about understanding that, with horses, patience is part of the process.”

PLAN YOUR ROUTE

The solution for some people is to reflect on why it is you become impatient and to identify your triggers, says Moira. Set goals and know the plan. An understanding of what needs to happen at each stage, to reach the next goal, can reduce frustration.

KNOW WHEN TO STOP

Frustration can arise if you’re searching for perfection. Perhaps you’re working on tempi changes and achieve a row of three-times and then two-times – the goal of your session. While the thinking and reflective rider stops there, the temptation is often to make them just a little a bit better and have another go. Mistakes then arise and frustration is increased.

MANAGE YOUR REACTIONS

Impatience can cause us to inadvertently tense our muscles. Learning basic relaxation scan techniques can help with identifying and releasing any tension caused by frustration. A good technique, something as simple as counting to 10, can take your mind away from the trigger, help slow your heart rate and relax your muscles.

RE-APPRAISE PROGRESS

Rather than thinking that didn’t go well, or this isn’t going right, reevaluate through restructuring your thoughts. Ask yourself: ‘What do I need to change?’

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR OWN EQUESTRIAN BACKGROUNDS

Guy: I rode from an early age but did not become enthusiastic until my teens when I started trail hunting. Whilst in the Army, I was selected to join the Kings Troop and during this time I took up point-to-point racing and became hooked. By sheer luck I purchased a horse to event that proved to be a good racehorse and won the Royal Artillery Gold Cup three times at Sandown. After the Army, I worked in racing for eight years prior to setting up KBIS with my wife Liz.

Liz: I have ridden from an early age, coming up through Pony Club. Whilst at Reading University, I captained the riding team. I then worked in Agricultural Finance and Investment and rode out with the Household Cavalry before work when I was living in London. After marriage to Guy and the birth of two children, Will and Emma, I helped run the racing office and then started working alongside Guy in KBIS.

WHAT FIRST PROMPTED YOUR INTEREST IN EQUINE INSURANCE SERVICES? We were buying and selling horses for our owners and had

an arrangement to provide insurance. We quickly realised that this was the best part of the business and that most insurance providers lacked in-depth knowledge of the equestrian world, so we felt there was a gap in the market which we could fill.

KBIS IS VERY MUCH A FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS. HOW DOES THIS WORK FOR YOU AS A TEAM?

We developed the business from one employee to a team of over 45, initially working in our dining room and then moving to offices converted from a barn at the bottom of our garden. Our

After 30 years developing KBIS we made the decision to sell the company. Our priority was to find a new owner who’d continue to value our teams in the way we do and continue with the KBIS ethos. We’re very pleased that KBIS has found an excellent home with the Specialist Risk Group (SRG), who hold the same values we do. We’ll continue to be involved with KBIS going forwards.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND A DAY OFF?

We both still enjoy riding (we have five horses currently, two of them are now retired), we enjoy messing around in boats and spending time with our grandchildren. We’re hopeful they will show an interest in riding so we can start with ponies all over again! T
