The end of winter is in sight.

Aseries of surveys – the most recent spearheaded by leading equine welfare charities – reveal that the ‘cost of living’ crisis is increasingly a source of worry to horse owners.

Dressage, of course, is not a cheap sport in which to participate, although focusing on priorities such as the horse’s basic welfare and training can help. In most parts of the country, we are also lucky to have amazing venues close at hand too, so fuel costs for competing and clinics are not too prohibitive.

The end of winter is in sight, which can help moderate feed and fuel bills a little. But the still-dark evenings offer the opportunity to take stock and consider ways to cut costs in the future. Building a new yard or updating existing facilities may be a long way from reality at the moment, but planning a few small changes could make a big difference. This could be as simple as swapping to LED bulbs to save electricity (and the pain of swapping ‘that’ bulb that always goes when you want to start plaiting) or installing rubber mats to cut on bedding bills.

We’ve looked at small changes alongside bigger capital projects in our ‘eco yards’ feature on P40. Considering the environment by looking at developments which avoid waste and make the best use of resources when it is the right time to invest is not only the responsible course of action, it could also cut costs in the long term. This then frees up cash for more exciting purchases.

Where dressage is a career as well as a passion, expanding your range of skills can help balance the books. British Dressage Coaching Qualifications not only show potential clients that their trainer has the technical skills to help them achieve their goals, but that they can also use the latest techniques developed across the Olympic sports to assist with effective learning.

In this issue we’ve also delved into how the coaching system has evolved to meet the needs of coaches, from helping with admin to delivering CPD that feels inspiring and productive rather than being a chore.

Interest in dressage continues to grow, and that special moment when a horse and rider achieves a movement they’ve struggled with, whether it’s at a competition or in a lesson at home, is what we are all striving for. It’s as powerful for the coach as it is for the rider. It’s what keeps us going when times are tough, as they are at the moment.

NEWS

PARA DRESSAGE AT LA2028

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board has confirmed that Para Equestrian has been included in the Paralympic Programme for Los Angeles 2028.

The result of an extensive review process which started in January 2022, Para Dressage will feature alongside 21 other sports confirmed by the IPC Governing Board when Los Angeles hosts the Paralympic Games in five years.

The Paralympic Games will be held from 15 to 27 August 2028, following the Olympic Games which are scheduled to take place from 14 to 30 July.

While 2028 will mark the third time that the Olympic Games will be held in Los Angeles after the 1932 and 1984 editions, it will be the first time the city will host the Paralympic Games.

Para Dressage is the only equestrian discipline included in the Paralympic Games, where it has been a regular fixture since 1996. Conducted under the same basic rules as able-bodied Dressage, male and female Para Dressage athletes compete as equals and are classified according to the level of their impairment.

DRESSAGE AT WINDSOR

International dressage returns to the Royal Windsor Horse Show this May. A CDI4* opens the show in the Castle Arena on Wednesday 10 (limited availability) and Thursday 11 May. Wednesday’s Grand Prix acts as a qualifier for day two’s Freestyle to Music.

For the Grand Prix, there will be access to a limited number (750) of unreserved seats in the Castle Arena’s west grandstand. Limited catering options will be available, but the shopping village will not be open, and there will be no other displays or competitions on this day. There will be no parking available on the showground but parking is available in Windsor town or public transport can be used (both Windsor train stations are within easy walking distance from the showground).

On Thursday 11 May there will also be showing and show jumping action.

FAREWELL TO FITZCERRALDO

Richard Heley’s Fitzcerraldo, ridden by BD International Director Judy Harvey to great success, has been put to sleep at the age of 24. By Feuerbrand, the bay gelding was produced as a young horse by Roland Tong and competed internationally with Judy as well as winning a number of National titles. After being diagnosed with Cushings, ‘Fitz’ continued to enjoy his work as a schoolmaster for Judy’s pupils.

Settling down in dressage town

German-born rider Kathleen Kröncke, who made a big impact on the LeMieux National Championships in 2022, is now firmly installed in the Cotswolds, and has some exciting prospects for this year, reports Jane

There’s no doubt that Kathleen Kröncke had a phenomenally successful 2022, culminating in winning the LeMieux Grand Prix Championship at the nationals with San Royal 3, and clocking up placings with United Maerchens and Kiriakos TSF in the Inter II final.

But there’s no chance of resting on her laurels, with a string of horses to ride at her adopted base in the Cotswolds, a house move to be just steps away from the stables, and young daughter Sofia – who is already hosting pony parties for her friends – to keep her busy.

It seems that Kathleen was always destined for a dressage career, with her parents Dolf-Dietram and Manuela running a large livery yard in Luhmühlen, Germany when she was growing up.

“They started out as show jumpers and then moved to dressage. We had 70 horses at home and I always rode a little, before starting to take both dressage and show jumping more seriously when I was 12.”

When Manuela purchased Florestan for herself, she probably should have realised that letting her 13-year-old daughter sit on her new horse could only have one result.

“He was the prettiest little horse ever. Florestan became my Junior horse, and I did the German championships with him and the Europeans and then three years in Young Riders.”

Kathleen also made an early debut in Under 25s, riding her first Grand Prix at 16, while still competing in show jumping. However, she was keen to continue her education.

“I had a year out where I was just riding and then took a Bachelors degree in psychology management, before deciding to become a professional rider and work with my parents,” she explains.

“I probably rode more than I studied! But I’d always advise young riders to finish their education even if horses are their background. Go and study – it’s three years out of your life,

you’ll have an amazing time and get to meet different people. Then you can ride for your whole life.”

After initially training with her parents in Luhmühlen, Kathleen set up her own business in Hamburg, competing at international small and big tour level. It was there that she met her husband Nikolas, who also had a successful spell as a youth rider before becoming a portfolio manager.

“We’d been married a year and then Covid hit, after which he had to make a decision to move to either New York or the UK for work. The UK was the best option to be close to our families, but also, I have never been to a country where everyone loves horses so much.

“We drove overnight and arrived in the Cotswolds and there were horses everywhere, riders trotting up the roads,” she recalls. “Not just dressage yards, but eventers, show jumpers >

and racing yards. It’s not common where I’m from and it’s why I fell in love with this country.”

While horses are both a passion and a profession for Kathleen, for Nikolas they also offer a hobby – in 2021 while Kathleen was expecting their daughter, he took over the ride on Flanell, competing successfully at Inter II, and will be out again this year.

Their base at the Cotswold Club not only brings its impressive facilities for her string of horses, but also the expertise of resident trainer Spencer Wilton.

“We got on well from the start, and although Nikolas and I could have lived in London, we soon decided that we would make the Cotswolds our home as well.”

Her string now numbers 12 horses, including two yearlings and Sofia’s Shetland pony. In addition to San Royal, Kiriakos TSF and Uniteds Maerchen are also now at Grand Prix, with nine year old Quantico 26 (Quantensprung x Stedinger) competing at Advanced Medium in 2022.

There are some exciting youngsters coming through with the six-year-old mare Blueberry (Bernay x Millennium) about to make her competition debut this year and the five-year-old Fabulous (by Fürstenball) while her just backed three-yearold, San Royal Junior (like San Royal, by San Remo) is still in Germany. A strikingly pretty yearling filly by Vitalis greets Kathleen each morning from the paddock next to her new home. All three of the youngest horses are by a Danone mare that Kathleen competed up to PSG.

She comments that she doesn’t favour a particular breed or type of horse – San Royal and Kiriakos bear this out being very different stamps – and has come across prospects in quite diverse ways in the past.

“Sany (San Royal) came to my yard and no-one could ride

him. He’s a gentle soul but could be really cheeky. I just got on with him really well, and we bought him for a small amount of money after my father tried piaffe-ing him in hand and thought he was really talented.”

Kiriakos was another fortuitous purchase – his previous owners were reluctant to sell, but with Kathleen headed for the UK, they were happy to let her have him. Similarly, Flannell was offered on the basis that he stayed with the couple after Nikolas bonded with him.

“We have a more planned approach to buying horses now, but when I get on one that’s right for me, I just get this feeling, that you don’t really see from the ground. It’s hard to explain –they just find me.”

She points out that this was the case with San Royal.

“I said to my father that I get the feeling he is going to be good, even though he isn’t the biggest mover. He wasn’t convinced initially.

I’ve got a really nice six-year-old – it was the same thing, with her, but now he loves her.” >

Kathleen works closely with Spencer on the training of her horses, explaining that the Cotswold Club-based riders like to share ideas and work together. Spencer rode the horses while Kathleen was pregnant and after she’d had Sofia, and takes over the reins while she is away.

She believes that it is important to let the horse tell you when to progress.

“We understand that there are set levels to achieve in British Dressage but it is up to the individual horse. Taking Sany as the example, when he was a young horse there were some things he struggled to achieve. At seven or eight I didn’t think I’d be able to do any changes with him, but then he won his first Grand Prix having just turned nine. It can seem to take such a long time but then they just learn everything. You have to be patient, but as long as you give them the feeling that you believe in them, it will come together in the end.”

She admits that she will sometimes have a discussion with Spencer and say that she is giving up on teaching a horse a particular movement, “But then the next day I get the feeling that it will turn out to be good. You have to trust the horse.”

Kathleen also believes that it is important for her horses to have variety and remain happy and motivated to work.

“They all go out and they all hack,” she comments, adding that she also makes use of a local water treadmill.

“It’s important for strengthening and fitness, which isn’t something I can achieve with hill work, for example, unless I go out on the roads. They will go for a week or 10 days until they

get used to it and now I can send Sany for a couple of days if I’m busy with something else.”

On the international scene, Kathleen represents Germany, with the year having kicked off with the Le Mans CDI, but to be in contention for German teams at Nations Cups and beyond, riders are required to contest the German championships and selections.

“This would be difficult for me at the moment as it requires a lot of travelling in a short space of time, alongside still needing to compete at CDIs to get qualifying scores. After being away at a show and then giving the horse a break afterwards it would leave a very short time for getting them back in shape for the next show. I’m still considering the way forward.”

Riding on a team once again is still very much one of her goals; with the couple now residing in Britain and Nikolas having a British nationality, being part of the British squad is one of the options.

“I don’t have a British passport at the moment, but it’s something to consider now I have horses at the higher levels again. While it’s nice riding for yourself, it’s also good to be part of a team.”

She comments that she is really looking forward to this year but likes to keep her feet on the ground.

“The thing with horses is that you can make a plan but you never know exactly what is going to happen. We’ve got some nice horses and some lovely shows to go to, and taking the youngsters out is exciting as I haven’t done much with them. Quantico only did one show last year so we will see what he can do.”

San Royal will spearhead the international efforts, having impressed many at Somerford with his effortless work.

Spencer comments: “When you ride him, he is the happiest horse, it’s like he has a smile on his face as he’s trotting and cantering round. He really enjoys his work and when they are like that it shows when you are competing. He’s a really special horse – he’s enormous so it’s incredible that he can achieve all those collected movements well.”

It looks like we will be seeing a lot more of this talented rider in 2023.

Driving dressage development

Coaching is much more than just giving someone a lesson before a competition. Ongoing updates to the BD system make registered coaches the equal of those in other world class sports.

Dressage has evolved from its classical origins to a globally renowned sport, offering competition opportunities from a fun day out for the amateur to the Olympics. It’s fitting then, that rider coaching should be developing on a par with other sports.

British Dressage’s specialist coaching qualifications were introduced over 15 years ago, and have developed significantly, explains BD Training and Education Manager Charlotte Osborne and Chair of the BEF Coach Development Action Team:

“There is now a Level IV in partnership with the BEF and other member bodies, which is a professional qualification, with opportunities to achieve other academic qualifications in professional coaching practice.

“We work closely with all types of coaches to meet their needs. The qualifications and development opportunities we offer are designed to support coaches to develop great coaching practices, to engage existing and potential clients. This is essential for coaches to maintain and grow their client bases and establish a sustainable business.”

top ups may now be added to enhance their skills, including youth specific, para, young horses and new starters.

“This makes the coaching participantcentred,” she says. “Coaching is not just lessons, it’s helping the client build a partnership with their horse and make decisions about competition progress while developing them as an athlete. Riders may come into affiliated dressage from Pony Club or riding clubs, and getting help with understanding rules, entries etc can improve retention and keep newcomers in the sport. We’re very aware of the importance of the coach’s supportive role and how important they are in growing dressage as a sport.”

Making the coaches’ job easier is another important element. “We’ve launched a business development toolkit with everything from branding to access to resource

libraries. If a coach is tackling a challenging issue such as rider’s mental health and wellbeing, there are tools and targeted CPD to help.”

Coaches can access a dedicated package which includes insurance, safeguarding and events, with online reminders about compliance, booking for CPD and upload portals for CPD logs.

“For example we used QR codes at the National Convention so coaches could easily register their attendance at the breakout sessions. It’s designed to suit the coaches’ on-the-go lifestyle – we know they often have to deal with admin while sitting in the car on a break between lessons!”

A significant cultural change is for coaches to recognise CPD as an opportunity for continued improvement rather than as a ‘box ticking’ exercise. BD coaches are required to complete set CPD every two years split between technical content (training of the horse and rider) and personal outcomes.

“The National Convention offers technical content via the arena activity, but this year we extended its scope with breakout sessions covering elements of physiotherapy, rider fitness and communication, which were well received. But it’s not just about attending one event, so we’re aiming to make content available online and on-demand, and we’re looking to offer more opportunities for members who have multiple roles, so that CPD for judging and coaching, for example, can be successfully completed.”

CASE STUDY COACHING EXPERIENCES

Guy Reynolds (pictured left) is no stranger to teaching, having been a college lecturer before deciding to make his passion for dressage a career.

“I’m now a list 3 judge and BD Level II coach, and the training has changed my approach to teaching to make it more ‘learner centred’, so I can help riders become more autonomous. I’m a recognised coach for up to Elementary level, and have benefited from training on the teaching as well as the technical side.”

By using a recognised coach, clients’ lessons also count towards regional training to qualify for BD series such as the Senior Home Internationals.

Guy is insured through BD, and points out that the Coaching Package means that records of regulatory requirements insurance, first aid and safeguarding are maintained centrally so it’s easy to check if updates are needed.

He comments that he finds the CPD useful: “When you are working on your own it’s easy to get stuck for ideas and events such as the National Convention can inspire and refresh you as a coach. We get access to wellknown trainers and can get ideas on how to improve our clients.”

With his own horse MSL Sambastar heading for Advanced Medium, Guy intends to progress to BD Level III as a coach.

“I want to be able to teach to a higher level and develop my existing clients and their horses further,” he comments.

When Sophie Wells (pictured on p14 presenting at the National Convention) completed her level III in 2015, she had no intention to take further qualifications. But looking for a new challenge during lockdown with competitions and training paused, she began to study for her level IV and is now part of a select group of dressage coaches with this postgraduate qualification.

“When I’d attended courses for the youth coaching pathway, there were others working towards level IV, and I thought it would provide me with a goal,” Sophie explains.

Due to Covid, much of the initial training was online, with tutorials and assignments to complete.

“It was split between work that I could relate to coaching situations and theory-based learning, which required me to carry out research and write papers at post-grad level,” she adds. “There were two British Showjumping coaches on the same course alongside lots of different sports from rowing to rugby, and you come to appreciate that there are similar challenges in any sport.”

In the second year of study, Sophie returned to competing, culminating in the Tokyo Olympics and World Para Championships, before being awarded the Level IV Coaching Certificate in December 2022.

“It was harder to find the time or the mental capacity to study, but it was certainly worth it to expand my knowledge, particularly on the academic side. It’s given me a better understanding of the importance of small nuances in coaching, and it actually helps me to work better with my own coaches and appreciate what they are saying.”

“We welcome feedback and ideas from coaches on the CPD that they would find useful,” says Charlotte.

With professional coaches in mind, the BEF is also

looking at developing standards which have core content and then allow discipline-specific qualifications to be added for those coaching in more than one discipline.

“It is recognised that gaining these qualifications is time consuming, for example, level three requires seven days’ training plus an assessment day.”

A mentoring network is also under development to help those undertaking the qualifications or progressing between the levels.

“This would allow coaches to share ideas and network; it’s an isolated job so a support network will be highly valuable.”

Charlotte suggests that becoming a BD coach is a great way to grow a business.

“There are many additional opportunities which can come from it, such as regional coaching, youth coaching and even becoming a coach educator.”

“Coaching is not just lessons, it’s helping the client build a partnership with their horse and make decisions about competition prog ress while developing them as an athlete.”

Talking Therapy

With an ever-increasing number of equine therapy options available, how do you choose the right treatment for your horse?

Emma Penny asks the experts. >

• M assage – manual or mechanical – can help a horse relax if it enjoys it. There is no evidence it helps with ‘flushing toxins’ or breaking adhesions, says Dr Tabor. “Don’t persist with using a massage gun if your horse hates it,” she adds.

• Infra-red – an infra-red lamp will provide superficial heating and feels nice for the horse, but there is no evidence to support any treatment claims, she says. Dr Murray says it could be regarded as stage one of three of warming up before starting work.

• Low level laser – LED devices and laser must be clearly differentiated as they are often confused, says Dr Tabor. “There is no evidence to support low powered LED devices, but there is some evidence – but not very strong – that laser will give some pain relief and tissue healing.”

If you’re a horse owner, chances are you’ve invested in equipment or treatments with the aim of making your horse more comfortable or to help it perform better. There is a vast range of kit available, from small hand-held massagers to equine spas, all with plenty of sales collateral to convince you that they will fulfil your requirements and more. While some will – and are so effective that they can be potentially damaging if used inappropriately – the evidence for others is less forthcoming.

But before investing in any therapy kit or treatments, Rossdales vet Rachel Murray, who also works for British Equestrian and is a vet on the World Class programme, stresses that it is essential to work with a professional such as your vet or ACPAT physiotherapist to assess your horse.

“A skilled physio needs to assess your individual horse and advise you what to do in terms of work, frequency, intensity and so on.” She warns that without this, a ‘classic thing’ people do is to buy a particular piece of kit, go online to watch it being used and then

• Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) – this is different to static magnets, and there is emerging evidence (though not consistent) that it has a positive effect. However, high intensity PEMF can cause tissue damage if not used correctly. Dr Murray says that the frequency and magnetic strength used affects which tissues heal, and their use is not simple; “Use a trained professional to advise you.”

• Magnetic therapy – static magnets have no evidence to support their use, says Dr Tabor.

• Vibrating floors – the limited research suggests this may have a positive effect on bone density, says Dr Tabor, but more research is needed. Dr

Murray says there is a small amount of evidence that they may improve proprioception, but another study found it made horses with distal limb arthritis more sore. “This depends on vibration frequency, and duration –again it’s about knowledge.”

• Spas – these are not usually classified as therapy, says Dr Tabor, but there is a suggestion that the cold water may have a beneficial effect on the lower limbs.

• Water treadmills – when used well, these are very good, she says, but must be used by a skilled operator. Dr Murray and a group of specialists have published recommendations for their use in the British

replicate that on their horse, which may be totally inappropriate.

Gillian Tabor, ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist and programme manager for the MSc vet physio course at Hartpury University, agrees. “Horses are individuals. Their needs and the demands placed on them are based on so many variables – there are no general protocols.

“Any therapy is only really useful if it is based on a decent assessment of the horse at that time.

“A skilled therapist who you use regularly will know when that horse is deviating and can advise on the appropriate therapy to get it back to its optimum.” Regular professional input to monitor what is happening is essential, adds Dr Murray.

Under British Equine Veterinary Association regulations, a physio can provide routine maintenance treatment without a vet referral or consent, but will refer to the horse’s vet

if they discover something which requires investigation or treatment. Where a known condition or problem is being treated, the therapist will require vet consent.

Dr Murray adds that owners should seek professional advice before using any therapy options, and ensure that they use a professional who is highly skilled. “They will be able to advise you what to use and how to use it on that individual horse.

“What a horse needs will also change with rehab and fitness. What you do now may not be appropriate in future, so it is important to continue to have professional input.”

Dr Tabor agrees, and stresses that any therapy is only a very small part of a horse’s overall health. “Your management of the horse’s physical and mental health, the appropriate exercise programme for that horse, and, as an owner, your rigour about doing those things have a big impact.”

Everyone would like a ‘quick fix’ says Dr

Murray. But riders should be investing their time in walking their horse over poles regularly, doing physio-directed stable exercises and groundwork. “It takes time and effort to be better,” she adds.

Equestrian publication Equine water treadmill exercise - a guide for users, which is easily found via Google. “They must be used by someone who knows what they are doing, and who watches the horse very, very carefully. A treadmill doesn’t stop and it is hard to spot when a horse may be having issues, be tired or is muscle sore.

“Horses need a very gradual introduction to them – it’s common sense. Suddenly sending your horse somewhere for two weeks is like sending a human to a gym every day for two weeks when they have never been before.”

• Therapeutic ultrasound –only really useful for localised tendon and ligament issues

and haematomas, says Dr Tabor. “You should have diagnostic ultrasounds before, during and after this treatment to measure its effectiveness, and for treatment guidance in terms of where to apply the ultrasound, and the dosage.”

• Kinesio taping – mixed evidence exists, but as a sensory input on the skin, it may have an impact on the muscles below, according to Dr Tabor. “It can be used for oedema and haematoma too, but can be a placebo – in humans, the colour of tape can have an impact on the results.”

• Microcurrent – there is no evidence that microcurrents used away from injury sites work. “In humans, they are

placed directly on the injury for hours for any positive impact,” says Dr Tabor.

• TENS – successfully used on many humans for pain relief, there is no evidence to support its use in horses but it can be effective, says Dr Tabor. “It doesn’t always work on all humans, and this seems to be the case in horses. It may be prescribed before riding, for instance, where there may be an SI injury, but that is different to using it for muscle stimulation.”

• Electro therapy – creating muscle stimulation can be beneficial, but should only be done by a skilled therapist, warns Dr Tabor. “There is an art to its application.”

A rewarding role

Whether you have a team of grooms or a freelance mucking out a couple of mornings a week, you need to be aware of new wages legislation which comes into force this spring.

QDoes legislation on minimum wages apply to small businesses or private individuals who are only employing one or two people?

Yes, the legislation applies to every employer in the UK. The vast majority of workers in the UK are entitled to the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage (for those over 22 years old).

QWhen do changes to wages come into force?

The next changes to the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage rates take effect from April 2023. Box 1 gives a summary of these which are banded according to the age of the worker.

QHow do I ensure I’m complying with wages legislation?

Employers need to register with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and set up a PAYE scheme. This can be done on the HMRC website (gov.uk/topic/ business-tax/paye). Once the scheme is set up, a submission will need to be made to HMRC every time the employees are paid.

QDoes this also apply if I use a freelance groom who is self-employed?

The National Minimum Wage and Living Wage does not apply to those who are self-employed. Unfortunately, whether or not someone is truly self-employed can be difficult to assess. It is your responsibility to determine whether the individual is actually an employee based on the specific facts of the working relationship. HMRC has produced an online tool for helping make the assessment (gov.uk/guidance/check-employmentstatus-for-tax). If in doubt, speak to your accountant – it will be a common question they get asked by their clients.

QCan I pay a lower wage if I offer an employee other benefits such as accommodation or keep for their horse?

No, with the exception of accommodation and there is a cap on what can be factored in for that too – the Accommodation Offset which will be £9.10 a day from April 2023. If you provide accommodation and charge less than £9.10 a day, the difference can be used to supplement any minimum or living wage calculations. If you charge over £9.10 a day, the excess will be taken as a deduction when assessing compliance. If the employer also provides livery for the employee’s horse, this should be recorded as a separate transaction, i.e. a sale to the employee.

QWhat about the use of a car?

Use of a pool car for business-related trips would not be a taxable benefit. Provision of a car for personal use would be a taxable benefit in its own right. Most typically, this would be reported on a P11D form each tax year. A type of national insurance contributions (called Class 1A) would apply, with the rate for the 2022/23 tax year being 13.8%.

QWhich employees are entitled to sick pay and holiday pay?

All employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks (based on how many days per week are worked i.e. 5 days/week = 28 days) paid holiday a year. Employers can include bank holidays when calculating this.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is less universal. It is currently £99.35 a week for up to 28 weeks. The employee may not be eligible if they earn less than £123 (before tax) a week. Furthermore, sick pay is for absences of four days or more.

It is possible to offer an employee more generous sick pay or holiday pay terms in their employment contract.

QDo the same rules apply for apprentices?

Apprentices have the same employment rights as other employees. There is a minimum hourly rate for apprentices, which applies to apprentices aged 16-18 years old, or over 18 and still in their first year.

QDo I have to contribute to an employee’s pension?

Employers have to provide a workplace pension scheme (often referred to as ‘auto-enrolment’). Employees (aged between 22 and state pension age) need to be enrolled into the scheme when their income in a particular pay period is the equivalent of £10,000 a year. There are some limited exceptions (https://www.gov.uk/workplacepensions/joining-a-workplace-pension).

Contributions under auto-enrolment will typically be a mixture of those by the employee and employer. Eligible employees can opt out of the scheme if they wish, however they still need to be enrolled first.

Fit for greatness

The dressage horse goes through an extraordinary change in both his physique and in what is required of him throughout his career, so saddle fitting naturally has to adapt to this progression. Jane Carley finds out what’s involved.

Dressage horses come in all shapes and sizes – and so do their riders. The more balanced the rider, the freer the horse can move – and the better the marks. Add to this conundrum the difference in dynamic to static back conformation (especially in advanced horses) and the challenges this can create highlights the importance of using a registered Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) Qualified Saddle Fitter to ensure the saddle is the best possible fit for both horse and rider.

“It is the saddle fitter’s job to select the correct range of saddles for both horse and rider,” SMS Qualified Saddle

Fitter Steph Bradley explains. “Seeing the horse in all paces and performing the more advanced collected moves is crucial at a fitting. Half-pass, shoulder-in, flying changes, canter pirouettes, and extended trot can all affect saddle balance. Equally, the picture might look great at rising trot, but when the rider is sitting, the saddle might prevent them finding a balanced, harmonious position. A well sprung rib cage, and a rider with short legs and tight hips creates a big challenge in the wrong saddle.”

Steph also stresses the importance of looking at horses working at the higher levels as athletes. They have a higher prevalence

to change shape, and new gait asymmetries can become more evident as they age and mature.

Having a good professional relationship with your saddle fitter is so important. Including them in your plans and training, and keeping them updated as to the routine management your horse may require will help identify patterns and any early concerns, she suggests. For example, the saddle may start to slip as you get nearer to your horse’s shoeing date.

“Often as a saddle fitter I see template changes and this can be an early sign to a potential issue,” says Steph. “Involving your saddle fitter in your para-professional team and encouraging collaboration is hugely important to optimise the ongoing fit of your saddle. I also find watching coaching sessions extremely useful as you see so much more. Regular saddle fits and open communication are a must in today’s competitive world of dressage.”

ST Ü BBEN AND ABI LYLE

Stübben has worked closely with Irish international rider Abi Lyle to design the latest Centurion II saddle around the needs of Grand Prix work.

“Abi rode at the London International on our prototype and doesn’t want to give it back!” said Stübben UK director and saddle fitter Tom Sexton.

The saddle, derived from the company’s popular Centurion, has an improved seat design, while the panel can also be specified for the top level horse, he explains.

“The seat is more open, allowing Abi to remain centrally balanced while being able to use her seat aids effectively.”

An ongoing challenge for saddle makers is that while riding is generally a >

female-dominated sport, seats have to accommodate the different seat bone shapes of men and women. Tom adds that this more open seat can also offer the required support for both male and female seat bones.

“We still sell a lot of our Genesis Special

PDS SADDLES AND CARL HESTER

Master Saddle Fitter Mark Fisher has worked for Carl Hester’s horses, with PDS Saddles, for many years. Mark ensures that the saddles initially are the right shape and style for each of the horses and can then alter the width with interchangeable gullet plates as most horses, no matter their age, change width throughout the year.

Riders should have their saddle checked regularly – the SMS recommends at least two to three times a year, but many elite horses require checks at least every three months. When horses are at a more advanced level it is quite amazing how quickly they can change shape depending on their competition schedule. After a big international many horses are given a bit of downtime after all the intense stress and travel, so it is always recommended to have your saddle checked

before picking up the reins again.

The influencers

In her previous article, Jane Kidd looked at the effect of the rider’s seat on the horse’s way of going. This time she turns her attention to how correct application of the aids and the ability to present the horse well can improve performance and boost marks.

To influence the horse the significant asset is a supple, poised and balanced position. Any crookedness, stiffness and lack of precise aids will make it confusing for the horse, harder for it to obey and work with quality. We know, however, that ‘feel’ (the ability to recognise what the horse is about to do and how it will do it) and a special understanding between the horse and rider do reduce the effect of such difficulties. Some older, stiffer, injured or para riders have shown incredible control over their horses. Nevertheless whatever the capabilities of the rider the aim must be to get as close as is possible to that classical position, as that is from where influence is most effective.

THE GOALS

It is fundamental to have a clear goal and sound knowledge of what is involved to reach towards it.

Clear pictures of the goal have been given to us by Charlotte and Lottie and they are both wonderful examples of the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI)’s Object and Principle:

“The horse gives the impression of doing, of its own accord, what is required. Confident and attentive, submitting generously to the control of the rider.” Focused watching of such brilliant influencers does lead to improvement –dressage is caught as much as taught.

It is the FEI who provide our ultimate goals. The end mark with a coefficient of 2 in the international dressage tests is now only General Impression. It has the following aims: harmonious presentation of the rider/horse combination

• rider’s position and seat

• discreet and effective influence of the aids.

CO-ORDINATION OF AIDS

When horse and rider understand the use of each isolated aid, the coordination of aids can start. The most vital example of this is the diagonal aid. The inside leg drives in the direction of the outside rein helping the horse to stay straight along the circumference of a circle and whenever it needs to be flexed or bent.

More theory about the aids, what they do, and how they change in the progressive training of the horse and/or rider would take up too much space for this article. It is one area where theoretical knowledge is important and a book, a video, a wise and committed teacher or a schoolmaster are the means to understand what achieves what.

CLARITY AND CONSISTENCY

The aids at the basic levels may be common sense but they become more complex, progressively more co-ordinated and subtle as the horse advances. Riders need to understand what they are asking for if the horse is to obey. Clarity of the aids is vital.

This knowledge is needed before the second vital criteria can be achieved – consistency. Only when there is consistency, only when the aids for – say – the canter are the same each time, can the horse learn what is needed. But adaption is not ruled out.

Variations in pressure or even the actual aid may be beneficial for a horse that is crooked, high spirited, lazy and the like. In such cases a trainer who can study what is happening from the ground is particularly helpful.

As soon as an adaption leads to improvement then the second criteria of consistency needs to be applied again.

A more general adaption is that as a horse progresses the aids may become lighter and the seat aids increasingly dominant.

FEI DIRECTIVES

The FEI directives give further helpful points about the components of the goal in their test assessing the basics of good riding.

CHARACTER, PHYSIQUE AND ENVIRONMENT

Key to adapting in a helpful way is that the rider has studied the character and physique of the horse. If the horse is excitable, over or under reactive, nervous, bold and the like, the rider has to be prepared to apply the aids in the way that suits the character – strongly, lightly, reassuringly, or differently.

The horse’s physique is also important with weak undeveloped horses needing simpler clearer aids.

The environment is another factor as when a horse is faced with unusual, scary things the bold may ignore it but the nervous may benefit from reassuring longer lasting aids. ‘Know your horse’.

THE WAY THE AIDS ARE USED

For the hand aids the fundamental factor is a forward feeling contact. The pressure in the reins can be strong, resistant or light but the rider’s tension in the reins is forward. For those who find this concept odd or difficult, practice on foot with a rein around an immovable object. Take up the reins as if riding, pull back on the contact and feel what is happening in the hands and arms. This dynamic on the horse shortens the neck and blocks the action of its hindquarters.

Now direct a forward tension in the hands and arms without moving the hands and this is the dynamic that will help the horse to step forward to the bit. Hand aids can still vary the pressure or position while keeping this forward tension.

The hands can move forward when giving and retaking the reins. They can move backward, but in most circumstances, only momentarily in the stronger pressure of a check.

With the leg aids the essential element is clarity. It is only when the seat is independent and balanced (see previous article) that the legs can hang down and not kick again and again on the horse’s side. Being told to stop kicking and trying to do so by tightening the muscles is rarely effective. It is the seat that needs the work.

Plan for the planet

With energy costs soaring, many owners are looking at ways to make their yards more sustainable and eco-friendly. Stephanie Bateman speaks to riders and industry experts to find out how to be more sustainable while saving money.

Reducing costs is always high on an owner’s agenda, but there’s also a lot of pressure to be more sustainable. Luckily, the two often go hand-in-hand, so how can yards become more sustainable while saving a few pounds at the same time?

Yard design is a good place to begin, says Lorelei Tomkins, marketing manager of Monarch Stables.

“When building a new yard and deciding on your stables, many of our ranges are available in a variety of different colour infills (brown, black, grey) that are made of recycled plastic,” says Lorelei. “They require no maintenance other than the occasional wash down, and are incredibly durable.”

For those who prefer natural products, Monarch’s hardwood is responsibly sourced, and while it is at the luxury end of the market, it lasts for decades with a little oil waxed coating once a year.

“Your stables should be a safe and happy environment for your horses, which in turn will reduce damage to stables and prevent expensive repairs,” says Lorelei. “They should also offer plenty of headroom and ventilation, and be a suitable size for the recipients. For the floors, using rubber flooring is an effective way of cutting down on bedding.”

Lorelei suggests it’s also worth considering installing skylights to allow more natural lighting into the building.

“Including larger storage areas into your layout plans could reduce your carbon footprint by cutting the numbers of deliveries to the yard when it comes to bedding and forage,” she advises. “Roofing options are

also worth looking at, as in the long run they can save time on repairs and replacements. Eco-friendly tiles are also becoming more popular. We offer slate effect tiles that are UV protected, very durable, last for years and can be used on horsewalkers, stables or other outbuildings.”

TRADITIONAL YARDS

When choosing materials to use in your yard, consider the sustainability of the products as well as the quality and longevity.

Yolanda also advises owners to think about the flooring they use.

“Concrete is commonly used as flooring in stabling, but it can have a high carbon footprint,” she says.

“We recommend considering other flooring options in addition to concrete, such as rubber matting or sealed flooring systems which reduce the amount of both concrete and bedding required.”

Collecting rainwater is another way of saving on running costs.

“Rainwater harvest tanks are relatively easy to install and means water can be stored and used for soaking hay and rinsing out feed buckets,” she adds. “Auto waterers will save money on water bills.”

LET THERE BE LIGHT

MANAGEMENT ALTERATIONS

The right bedding and feeding investments can also help yards reduce their running costs. “Soaking hay requires a lot of water and the effluent from soaking is toxic,” says Haygain’s Kim Miller. “A Haygain high temperature hay steamer reduces up to 99% of the respirable irritants from hay to protect and improve equine respiratory health. It also only requires approximately four litres of water per cycle compared to soaking which can use 60 to 100 litres of water. Our steamers use between 1.5kW, 2.3kW and 2.75kW per cycle, so it’s modest electricity use. Steamed hay is also proven to be more appealing to horses, so there’s less potential waste of hay.”

“I have had a large solar power system installed, with panels put on the roof of the main building along with storage batteries, which will generate more than we can use on summer days,” she explains. “Then, what is stored can be used at night as it is fed back to the house as well as the yard. Although it was expensive to put in, it means that from April to October, I have no electricity bills as it covers the yard and feeds back to the house, which is worth over £1,500 a month.

“We also invested in a rainwater harvesting system so all the rain off the roof is put through a filtration system and stored in a very large, black chamber under the ground and then used in the field water drinkers and the wash bay.”

Hit the hay

In the second of our new series, Andrea Oakes looks at the importance of sleep.

The daily dose of fresh air and exercise that an equestrian lifestyle brings should, in theory, result in a good night’s sleep. But if everything else in our busy lifestyles is sabotaging our chance of a decent kip, we can find ourselves underperforming in all areas.

“We live in an ‘always on’ culture,” says Ashleigh Wallace, Head of Human Sports Science and Medicine at British Equestrian, who explains that work is no longer confined to so-called business hours now that our smartphones and tablets keep us connected around the clock. This is not just an office phenomenon; professional riders and coaches are typically up early and working late into the night, answering texts, sending emails and sorting admin. “The world is encouraging us to sleep less,” she adds. “It’s often seen as a badge of honour to say ‘I only need four hours’, yet sleep is essential to prevent disfunction when we’re awake. Lack of sleep can impair mental, physical and emotional function and can also negatively impact the body’s immune system.” While we can survive on fewer hours than the recommended eight or so, less than optimal sleep means the

body’s batteries are not fully charged.

“Lack of sleep affects our focus and specifically our accuracy of thinking,” explains Ashleigh. “In competition, a rider must make crucial decisions that require mental acuity (sharpness of mind), yet time awake, sometimes termed ‘sleep debt’, will impair mental performance. More than 16 consecutive hours awake will have a substantial negative effect on mental activity and focus, which is worth remembering on long days with show classes that run late into the night.

“Sub-optimal sleep affects physical performance, especially reaction times,” she adds. “It also leaves us less able to manage our emotions in pressurised situations, where we need to control stress arousal. None of these effects is beneficial for performing at the top of your game.

“In the long term, quality sleep is vital for health and wellbeing,” adds Ashleigh, adding that a lack of sleep can contribute to a host of health disorders ranging from obesity to heart disease and depression. “The natural killer cells in the body, which identify dangerous foreign elements and eliminate them, are markedly reduced with poor sleep.”

SIMPLE MEASURES

While this might make alarming bedtime reading, a number of simple measures can help.

“Research indicates that we should focus on three areas of sleep: duration, quality and timing,” says Ashleigh. “Between seven and nine hours is considered healthy for an adult. Optimise sleep quality by avoiding caffeine and alcohol for four to six hours before bedtime and minimising intake of high-processed fats and sugars in the evening. Power down technology and create a sleep environment that’s cool, dark and quiet.

“Anchor your waking time each morning, ideally setting your alarm time consistently,” she adds. “Try to obtain some exposure to morning light, especially in winter, and keep any daytime naps to 30 minutes or less taken between 1pm and 4pm.”

Some experts suggest a wind-down ritual to promote more relaxed sleep, which might include a warm bath, meditation and diaphragmatic breathing exercises.

“Dimming the lights and reading for 30 minutes can also help induce a sleepy state,” says Ashleigh. “The production of melatonin is key to drifting off; raising your core temperature with a hot bath or shower 15 minutes before going to bed will produce melatonin, as will eating tryptophan-rich foods such as tart cherry juice, turkey breast, cottage cheese, almonds and walnuts. Experiment with these ideas, trying something for at least 10 consecutive nights before discounting it.”

REST AND RECOVERY

Long journeys to shows, added to the anticipation of the competition ahead, can mean sleep is elusive. What about those nights when you just can’t drop off, or you wake early and can’t get back to sleep?

“If you’re still awake after 20-30 minutes, get up and do a quiet activity elsewhere before returning to bed,” she says. “Focus on relaxation and remind yourself that sleep will come naturally. Mild or occasional sleep deprivation is not necessarily damaging. Simply lying there is giving your body chance to rest and recover.

“For athletes travelling around the globe, jet lag can wreak havoc on healthy sleep patterns,” adds Ashleigh, who was tasked with helping ensure our equestrian teams were refreshed and ready to ride at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “If you’re flying east, try going to bed an hour earlier each night in the week leading up to the trip and seek natural light in the morning once you arrive. If you’re flying west, delay your bedtime for an hour for several nights beforehand and seek light in the afternoon once there. Taking electrolytes during the flight for hydration, and tryptophan-rich foods and Informed Sport certified supplements such as CherryActive, can also help.”

In a hectic schedule, sleep may be low on the priority list. But rather than time wasted, those precious hours allow body and mind to repair and re-energise – ready for another busy day.

CASE STUDY BREAKING WITH WAKING

“I have so much sympathy for people who can’t sleep,” says international rider Abi Lyle, who never struggled to get to sleep but for years woke repeatedly in the early hours and could not drop off again. “It makes every aspect of life more difficult.”

Abi’s breakthrough came when a sleep technician suggested she should stop worrying about getting a full seven hours.

“I aimed for four and built from there, so I’d see five as a success,” she says. “But the best thing was getting up if I couldn’t sleep. I would walk around the yard for 10 minutes in the night air before going back to bed.

“It’s not easy to get up, but otherwise bed becomes an unpleasant place with bad associations,” she adds. “It worked for me. I’ve just filled in FEI/Horse Sport Ireland paperwork and for the first time in three years I can state that I’m not taking anything for insomnia.”

Equissage goes full circle

Niagara Equissage Pulse cycloidal massage has become established as a therapy for competition horses and riders, but its origins are based on a chance discovery and a drive to improve human health.

The cycloidal massage action patented by Niagara Equissage originated in the coalfields of Canada in the 1920s. Coal miners working there discovered that by leaning against a separation machine, they could get immediate relief for aching backs and joints.

Inventors the Wettlaufer Brothers began researching the process for therapeutic use, developing what is now known as ‘cycloid vibration’, a three-dimensional vibration which increases blood flow and stimulates soft tissue, gaining their original patent in 1931. Entrepreneur Owen Murphy, who had

a background in the Medical Corps during World War II, realised the benefits products based on this new ‘energy’ could produce and in 1949, paid $150,000 for the patent, a substantial sum of money at the time.

He established Niagara Healthcare and began to develop human therapy units, while the technology was also built into massage tables and chairs for use in hospitals. He also founded the Niagara Medical Research institute, to fund research into the benefits of the massaging action, working with leading experts in circulatory and orthopaedic medicine.

Owen Murphy joined forces with pioneering children’s hospital the Fairyland Clinic, incorporating massage into child-friendly therapy machines. Massage tables and pads were also used by leading sports trainers to help improve performance and address injuries.

Niagara Therapy now has manufacturing centres in the UK and Australia, and requests by customers to use their machines on their horses and dogs led to the launch of the first Equissage machines in 1996.

“A racehorse trainer who had an accident and used a Niagara unit under a physiotherapist’s supervision was keen to try it on his horses,” explains Niagara Equissage’s national sales manager Charlotte Walker.

“Around the same time, a showjumper competing at HOYS found their horse had become stiff and sore. The rider’s mother was recovering from a hip operation and, thinking there was nothing to lose, used her own hand-held unit for managing pain relief and joint mobility on the horse. There was a dramatic improvement.”

A mains-powered pad was developed in 1997, progressing to the familiar unit with a battery either side a few years later. Equissage was officially born in January 2000 though it was still a novel concept for many.

“It was initially considered a professional product for high value racehorses and competition horses, but many of our customers feel it is a worthwhile investment to use on a cherished older horse that is starting to struggle a bit for example, and they see an improvement,” she says.

Today the company is part of a large medical supplier, and the products are used in veterinary practice for recovery from a wide range of issues as well as by physiotherapists. As the Denbigh, North Wales factory is a medical manufacturing unit, all components

must meet specific standards and any marketing claims are strictly audited.

The company continues to work closely with healthcare professionals, in the case of the horse, veterinary surgeons as well as physiotherapists.

“When rehabilitating a horse after an injury, it’s important to ensure that your vet is happy for a massage unit to be used, but cycloidal massage can be highly beneficial in recovery from many ailments by improving the horse’s overall well-being,” comments Charlotte.

There are specific applications for a range of conditions including kissing spine, she adds.

“It can be useful pre-op or post-op once signed off by the vet for therapy, offering relief from soreness and tension. This is evidenced in human research although there has not been any specific work in horses yet. For those not considered for surgery, warming up the back, helping to increase stretching and build muscle tone can offer pain relief and increase suppleness.”

Acknowledging that the equine research environment is currently somewhat challenging, she adds that there is interest in using cycloidal massage in post-operative applications such as colic surgery and for horses with tendon or ligament damage.

benefit, Charlotte comments:

“Many riders will use cycloidal massage to help warm up their horses before exercise, especially in cold weather, and feedback suggests that it can make young horses, for example, more settled. Increasing the range of motion throughout the horse’s body helps to prevent injury, and it’s also an option for cool down, if you can’t do this easily by exercise.”

1 LOOK AFTER YOUR HORSE’S DIGESTIVE HEALTH

It is well known that fibre is vital for the digestive health of the horse. Low fibre diets, combined with higher starch rations are linked to loose droppings, an increased risk of colic and gastric ulcers. When it comes to ulcers not all fibre is the same and research has shown that alfalfa as a fibre source is a superior buffer to acidity in the digestive tract. Feeding a double handful of a chopped alfalfa-based fibre feed such as Dengie Alfa-A Oil in the 20-25 minutes before you ride is recommended to help prevent ‘acid splash’ in the non-glandular region of your horse’s stomach.

2 LOOK AFTER YOUR HORSE’S RESPIRATORY HEALTH

Stabling and travelling horses in confined spaces potentially increases their exposure to respirable particles such as mould which can be detrimental to respiratory health. Dengie Performance Fibre combines precision dried grasses and alfalfa with a light molasses and oil coating with added spearmint oil. As both the grasses and alfalfa are precision dried, Performance Fibre provides an exceptionally clean fibre source for the performance horse and can also be used as a partial forage replacer.

HYDRATION IS KEY FOR

AND PERFORMANCE. Both water and electrolytes are required to keep your horse hydrated and an electrolyte supplement should be a daily addition to the ration throughout training, travel and competition. Using a fibre mash such as Dengie Alfa-Beet, which combines alfalfa and unmolassed sugar beet, can be helpful for two reasons. Firstly, as a soaked feed, Alfa-Beet carries water into the digestive tract and, as it is so highly digestible, releases it readily to aid hydration. TAKE YOUR COOL DOWN SERIOUSLY

After exercise, the lymphatic system has lots of work to do clearing the waste generated by cells that have been working hard to supply the fuel that powers performance. The flow of lymph is stimulated by things like muscle contraction, the pulse through arteries and movement of the gut (peristalsis). The cool-down period is really important for allowing the waste products of exercise to be cleared by the lymphatic system and depending on the intensity and duration of exercise, a good 15-30 minute cool down will benefit recovery.

5 CHOOSE SPORTS SAFE FEEDS

Don’t get caught out if you’re successful. Think about where your forage is coming from, does your supplier understand the risk of NOPS? Several examples of positive dope tests occurred when people competing abroad used forage supplied by the venue!

Look for BETA NOPS approved companies and if you’re in any doubt, take hay replacers with you. Even if you can’t take the full amount needed, using them as partial hay replacers means the amount of unknown forage they are consuming is reduced.

JUDGE TRAINING

Annual CPD requirements for judges for 2022 run from the end of March 2022 to the end of March 2023. Judges must attend a formal training session from the three options below only, and are required to attend training either at their current level or one level above.

Judges are able to use attendance at the Principles of Judging seminar at Arena UK in March for their annual CPD training requirements for 2023 if they’ve already fulfilled their 2022 CPD requirements. MEET Richard Baldwin

Trainers and riders often use the knowledge they’ve acquired to venture into the hugely responsible yet rewarding vocation of judging. A prime example is Richard Baldwin, who’s forged a highly successful judging career, progressing through the levels to reach List 1 in 2019 at the age of just 36. Richard serves on the Judges Committee, is a tutor and examiner of judges, and in 2021 he was appointed as a British Dressage U21 Selector for international competition and teams. We caught up with Richard, who lives in Warwickshire, to find out more about his view from the judge’s box.

QTell us a little about your early years around horses. My parents are from a country background with my grandfather working with horses and my mother riding as a child. My mother gave up riding when she lost her friend to an accident and was never keen on me riding, so I was only allowed a pony as a pet. However, being a teenage boy, I would ride anyway and go galloping and jumping everything in sight. This led to my parents deciding lessons were a good idea and I learnt to ride properly and safely. I jumped and did mounted games before I had my first dressage lesson at the age of 15. I went to Moreton Morrell College to do qualifications for veterinary college; however, I was already hooked on dressage because of two instructors Liz Fellows (Neal) and Helen Taylor, much against my original career plan. I started working with horses and progressed through Juniors, Young Riders and the start of Seniors with the help from the BDSC talent spotting scheme, Carol Hogg, Emile Faurie and Alex Hargie.

QWho or what motivated you to start judging?

I fell in love with dressage because of my passion for training horses, not really because of competing. I became obsessed, and still am, about training horses and this naturally led me into being interested in judging to further this knowledge. Horses will always be my motivation to keep going and keep improving, and to them I will always be grateful.

QWhat are the main changes you’ve noticed in the sport since you began judging?

I’ve noticed the changes in the training of horses over the years and how the horses are judged in accordance with this. I’ve seen this country grow from strength to strength within the sport and am proud to be a part of it now and in the future.

QThe most memorable moment of your career so far. Judging a Grand Prix with three FEI 5* judges and one 4* judge (including mentors Clive Halsall and Stephen Clarke) at Somerford Premier League and judging a masterclass ride from Carl Hester on En Vogue. There were a few 10s!

QWhat are the greatest rewards?

The greatest reward is watching riders’ dreams come true with a happy harmonious horse and test. To judge a test where there is true harmony and friendship between rider and horse is a reward in itself.

QWhat would you say to anyone considering becoming a judge?

There is so much to know with so much time, money and commitment needed but I wouldn’t change it for anything else.

QYour best piece of advice to anyone riding down the centre line?

You’re on your own journey, produce the best you can on that day. There’s always another day if it goes wrong, just smile, and pat the horse no matter what the result is.

QIf you won a vacation to anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go and why?

Anywhere sunny, relaxed and somewhere that all the great friends I have made over the years can come to and enjoy the time together. I love my judging, but I also love the time I spend with my colleagues that I am honoured to call my friends worldwide and at home.
