WELCOME LETTER

CLAIRE MACDONALD WELCOME FROM THE PUBLISHER The last two years have bestowed upon us their fair share of disruption and disappointment, that’s for sure. But despite the challenges brought on by the seemingly never-ending pandemic, there have been some bright spots. And the innovation and creativity that have been recognized during the course of the judging for the 12th annual Realscreen Awards are certainly amongst those beacons. The resilience and adaptability of the international non-fiction and unscripted community is really quite remarkable, and the quality of work that has emerged during the pandemic does not appear to have been impacted at all negatively. Over the last decade, the Realscreen Awards have gained stature as among the most coveted honors in the genre. When we launched in 2010, with a nod to the reality genre that had, until then, been largely ignored by mainstream entertainment awards programs, we were happy to attract 148 entries from around the globe. This year drew a record-breaking 602 submissions from 13 countries. And the competition was fierce! Thanks to all of the producers and broadcasters who submitted their work for consideration, and enormous thanks to our 112 jury chairs and judges profiled in the next few pages. This is a whopping undertaking, and we are very grateful for the considerable time they’ve spent screening and thoughtfully scoring the entries. In 2022, we are very pleased to honor three trailblazing industry veterans by presenting them with special awards of distinction. First up is Paul Buccieri, President & Chairman of A+E Networks Group. Apart from being one of the nicest people in the business, he’s a leading television industry executive

whose remit includes some of the most powerful brands in media, including A&E, Lifetime, The History Channel, LMN, FYI and Vice TV. You can read more about his accomplishments further in this program. Next to be feted is Jane Root, a fixture at Realscreen events and within the pages of the magazine. In 2008, Jane founded Nutopia, which, in addition to being known for producing award-winning documentary series on a global scale, has created a new genre of television: the “mega-doc.” You can also read more about Jane’s formidable career in this program. Paul and Jane join a remarkable roster of industry legends in the Realscreen Hall of Fame, including Thom Beers, Mark Burnett, Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, Mike Darnell, Nancy Dubuc, Paula Kerger, Stephen Lambert, Brent Montgomery, Jon Murray, Craig Piligian, SallyAnn Salsano, Paul Telegdy and Bertram van Munster. We also honor Stanley Nelson, a filmmaker who has dedicated his life and life’s work to documenting the AfricanAmerican experience by combining compelling narratives with rich historical detail to illuminate the underexplored American past. His most recent feature, Attica, is no exception and has recently been shortlisted in the Academy Awards’ doc category. We are very pleased to present Stanley with a Realscreen Legacy Award, recognizing a lifetime of achievement within the non-fiction and unscripted screen content industry. Past recipients include Jon Murray, Sheila Nevins and David Lyle. Congratulations to Paul, Jane and Stanley, and to all of the finalists and winners of this year’s celebration of excellence in unscripted and non-fiction. RSA 3

LEGACY AWARD

STANLEY NELSON LEGACY AWARD HONOREE Stanley Nelson is today’s leading documentarian of the African-American experience. His films combine compelling narratives with rich historical detail to illuminate the underexplored American past. A MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Nelson has received nearly every award in broadcasting, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, and lifetime achievement awards from the Emmys, the Peabody Awards and the International Documentary Association. In 2016, Nelson was honored with the National Medal in the Humanities from President Barack Obama. With his wife, Marcia A. Smith, Nelson co-founded Firelight Media, a non-profit organization that supports and develops non-fiction filmmakers of color. Firelight Media’s Documentary Lab has supported more than 100 filmmakers, whose films have premiered in theaters and on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. Their films have won Emmy and Peabody Awards and garnered accolades from festivals and critics alike. His latest documentary films include Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy for Netflix, the Emmy-nominated Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre, with Marco Williams, for the History Channel, and Attica for Showtime.

Other notable projects within Stanley Nelson’s filmography include 2016’s The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, the first comprehensive feature length historical documentary portrait of that iconic organization. The film won the 2016 NAACP Image Award. Nelson’s two previous films, Freedom Riders (2010, recipient of three Primetime Emmy Awards and included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress) and the Peabody-winning Freedom Summer (2014), took a fresh look at multiracial efforts to register black voters and desegregate public transportation facilities in the Jim Crow South, critical events in the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Nelson’s 2003 film The Murder of Emmett Till, about the brutal killing of a 14-year-old African American boy in Mississippi in 1955, an event that had a galvanizing effect on the mid-century civil rights movement, uncovered new eyewitnesses to the crime and helped prompt the U.S. Department of Justice to reopen the case. Other recipients of the Realscreen Legacy Award, given in recognition of a lifetime of achievement within the non-fiction and unscripted screen content industry, include Jon Murray of Bunim/Murray Productions, Sheila Nevins and David Lyle.
