Franzero was an Italian who settled in London and built up an international reputation as a journalist and author. […] However, it was not until 1932 that he was in a position to start buying Chinese porcelain at first modestly in the Caledonian Market. But his serious collecting dates from the war years when his articles in the Daily Telegraph, after– wards published in book form, brought him some affluence. He came to know the dealers and recalls with pleasure the hours he spent with Edgar and Leonard Bluett, ‘that charming man’ Peter Sparks, ‘old Hancock’ and H. R. N. Norton, who, Dr Franzero tells us, used to say his initials stood for ‘His Royal Nothingness’. He says they all seemed to enjoy treating him like a pupil and from them he learnt how to distinguish real quality. It was at this time he acquired his taste for wares enamelled in three colours on biscuit and Fukien blanc–deChine [...] Dr Franzero emphasizes that his self–imposed rule in collecting has been to be guided solely by taste and to accept a degree of damage if a piece is of sufficient quality and beauty.’

THE ERIK NORDSTRÖM COLLECTION, LOT NO 641–643 Erik Nordström (1884–1971) was commissioned after a recommendation by Swedish minister Gustav Oscar Wallenberg, the Envoyé of Japan and China, as Post General in Shanghai at the Royal Chinese General Post Office in 1910. The aim was to help facilitate its work throughout China. He was positioned in several of the Chinese provinces (he often chose the northern provinces due to their resemblance to the northern Sweden where he stems from) over his 35 years in the postal service. Gustav Oscar Wallenberg who became a close and dear friend of Erik Nordström, was a keen collector of Chinese ceramics and introduced him to the art of collecting by defining age, quality and heritage as they visited the antique shops of Beijing. The vast collection of Eric Nordström contains a variety of objects of which many were acquired for the purpose of every– day use, hence the wear to many of the objects.

During his time in China he encountered and befriended many of the Swedish society who both worked and lived as well as passed through China at the time, i.e. Johan Gunnar Andersson and wife, Sven Hedin, Carl Bonde, Sten Thiel in the company of Nils von Dardel and his then fiancé Nita Wallenberg, to name only a few. Erik Nordström was a keen sportsman and always liked a challenge whether it be hunting, shooting or tennis. He retired in China in 1945 and spent his last years in Qingdao before his return to Sweden in 1948. By the time he left China in 1948 he and his family had experienced the Chinese revolution, World War I and the Japanese invasion and World War II.

737. A Chinese silver bowl, Wang Hing & Co, early 20th Century. Round decorated with blossoming cherry trees with birds. Diameter widest part 15,5 cm. Diameter rim 12 cm. Weight 403 gram. Provenance: Wang Hing was almost certainly a created name – not uncommon in eastern culture – intended to encourage good luck, rather than a name of the owner of the business. The firm was established in Canton in 1854, by the wealthy Lo merchant family. The company Wang Hing & Co.’s success as an exporter of silver was surely affected by the recent colonization of Hong Kong by the British, which had taken place 1842. Simultaneously, the Treaty of Nanking was established, which would aid China’s export trade all over the world, though being especially favourable to the British and America. Previously, Chinese silver had been created largely in the same style as Georgian British silverware. Suddenly the abundance of export trade to the Western world mean that Chinese export silver began to feature traditional Chinese motifs, patterns and symbols. This would prove to be popular with Western retailers and consumers, as the novelty of this new style of silverware made the pieces fashionable. Wang Hing & Co. eventually grew to be so successful that they opened a premises in Hong Kong in the early 1920s which sold silverware, jade, lacquerware as well as other luxury homewares. Wang Hing and Co. are one of the most famous, certainly the most prolific Chinese export silver makers in the world. This reputation is largely due to the firm’s relationship with Tiffany’s – as it was a long held belief that Wang Hing and Co. directly supplied Tiffany and Co. with Chinese Export silver.
