BARBRO NILSSON

229. Barbro Nilsson, a carpet, ‘Stjärnflossan, blå’, knotted pile, ca 250–253 x 249–253 cm, signed AB MMF BN.

‘Stjärnflossan, blå’ is an excellent example of how well Barbro Nilsson created patterns with motifs from nature. She described in textile the sky, the sun and the stars in an elegant and stylized way. In this carpet you can see the stars twinkling in a dark sky. The pattern is repeated in the large ‘Västeråsstjärnan’ designed for Västerås Cathedral in 1960.

(AB Märta Måås–Fjetterström, Barbro Nilsson). Designed in 1957. (Rare). Literature: Möller, Viggo Sten: En bok om Barbro Nilsson, Stockholm/Barcelona 1977, text page 35, compare with ‘Västeråsstjärnan’ (designed in 1960), plate page 27. (d)

MARIANNE RICHTER Marianne Richter’s large knotted pile carpet ‘Fläkten’ was designed for AB Svenska Fläktfabriken in 1959. The factory was also called Fläkt, which has given the name to this carpet pattern. Marianne Richter started in 1942 both as a teacher at Konstfackskolan (the School of Art) and at the same time she was associated with Märta Måås–Fjetterström AB. At MMF AB, Richter created her perhaps most famous work the 202 square meter large curtain designed for ECOSOC’s council chamber in the UN skyscraper in New York. Richter is known for her colourful creations and her very characteristic rugs and tapestries. She often used small geometric elements such as rhombuses, triangles, and squares as well as stylized flowers in a more extensive pictorial context. The colour palette is often playful, which you

can see in this particular carpet ‘Fläkten’ and in a rya ‘Guldslottet’ which was designed the same year. Marianne Richter has long been in the background in terms of popularity in comparison with Märta Måås–Fjetterström and Barbro Nilsson. Still, in the last ten to twenty years, interest in her work has increased significantly. 157. Georg Jensen, a sterling silver candelabrum, Copenhagen 1993, design nr 324. For two candles. BARBRO NILSSON

231. Kerstin Ekengren, a carpet, ‘Cavalleria Rustica’, knotted pile, ca 320–321,5 x 220–230 cm, signed KE LH, Plitmors Järvsö 1961.

Barbro Nilsson created many beautiful patterns for both churches and secular buildings, including to some of the important Swedish banks as Svenska Handelsbanken, Götabanken and Skandinaviska Banken. ‘Bankrabatten’ is an excellent example of Barbro Nilsson’s rich, simplified but intense patterns that shine brightly in colour.

The customer wanted a carpet with a horse since he loved horses. Kerstin Ekengren did not think it suited the carpet’s pattern so she designed a detail with a rider on a horse which is seen in a corner of the field. A sewn on label at the back.

FUTURUM The interior design company ‘Futurum’ was one of the many interior design companies that started business in Sweden post the 1930 Stockholm exhibition. Futurum was founded in 1934 by Margareta Köhler and Marie–Louise Idestam– Blomberg. The philosophy for their business was based upon the modernistic, or if you wish functionalistic, ideals that were introduced at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition. The furniture should not be put in an interior for merely decorative

purposes but based upon the client’s actual needs and designed with their function as a major target. Margareta Köhler was the main designer of the furniture produced by Futurum. Their aim was to create a unity with the furniture, textiles, lighting etc. Despite really good reviews from both clients and critics, Futurum had to shut down the business in 1941 due to financial problems.
