Reynaldo Brown Mexico City, 1968

Cal Poly Mustangs in the Olympics rown 1968 During a run of winning three consecutive state high jump championships at Compton High School, Reynaldo Brown competed as a 17-year-old at the 1968 Olympics. He cleared 7 feet and a quarter-inch in Mexico City, finishing just two spots back of earning a bronze medal. Renowned as one of the last world-class high jumpers to use the straddle technique rather than the Fosbury Flop (as Dick Fosbury won the gold in 1968), Brown won a pair of national titles for Cal Poly at the Division I level, in 1971 and 1973. His height of 7’ 4” on the second occasion — which culminated a senior season in which he earned top honors at 15 meets — broke the NCAA record at the time, ranked No. 2 in the world that year (behind only Dwight Stones), and still stands as the Mustangs’ program record. By the close of his collegiate career, whether via indoor or outdoor competition, Brown had set or tied 27 records in various contexts. The 1971 all-sports CCAA Male Athlete of the Year also played basketball at Cal Poly. Brown overcame cancer, and cardiac and kidney failure later in life to still clear 5’ 6” in 2009.

He held the Ethiopian 800m record from 1968 through 1972. As a Mustang freshman, he won the 880-yard 1969 national title with a time of 1:49.6, before repeating as a sophomore, at 1:49.9. He won conference championships in the event both seasons, as well as back-toback mile crowns at 4:11.6 and 4:13.3. In the fall of 1969, he also led the Mustangs to the program’s first-ever cross country conference championship, with a team score of 20 points in Pomona, as he won the individual title with an 8k performance of 25:11.9. Michael finished fifth at the 1970 Division I NCAA Championships for the 880y, with a school-record time of 1:47.9 — converted to 1:47.3 for meters (at right).

A year later at the Munich Games (shown at left), he represented his native India in both the triple and long jump. Gill had previously won a gold medal at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok, as well as a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh the same year. Below, Gill poses for a photo on campus with coach Steve Simmons, who would also later be inducted into the Cal Poly Hall of Fame. Gill won back-to-back NCAA outdoor championships for the Mustangs in 1970 and 1971, at 51’ 9.25” and 54’ 8.5”.

As a sophomore for Cal Poly in 1982, Sue McNeal set the school record for the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches. It was a pinnacle that stood for more than two decades and ranked sixth in the nation for that entire season, whether among collegians or professionals, while garnering Division I AllAmerican status. In the first season the NCAA sponsored women’s sports, McNeal helped Cal Poly earn a No. 7 dual-meet team ranking from Track & Field News. She won a national title in 1983 for the Mustangs, and her clearance of 6 feet the following year remains an all-time record for the CCAA finals. The Carlsbad native’s all-time best came in 1991, at 6’ 5”, rising to a U.S. ranking of No. 2. The next year at the Barcelona Games, she finished 19th, with a height of 6’ 2.75”.

Prior to becoming a four-year university in 1940, Cal Poly competed as a two-year college, winning California Central Coast Conference championships in 1933 and 1935 under Al Agosti and J.C. Deuel. After World War II, the Mustangs fully returned in the 1947-48 year, the program’s first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly’s first complete season for women’s track & field came in 1973-74 as a charter member of the Southern California Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The SCWIAC became the Southern California Athletic Association two years later, before the Mustang women’s squads aligned with the men’s teams’ conference affiliations in 1981-82 — also the first year the NCAA sponsored women’s national championship meets, following the previous decade in the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women). The Mustangs competed in the CCAA through 1993-94, before fully moving to Division I and the American West Conference in 1994-95, and then the Big West Conference in 1996-97. (Through the spring of 1982, the NCAA also allowed student-athletes from all divisions to qualify for Division I championships.)

Steve Miller and John Capriotti Athletics Complex

ome to Cal Poly Track & Field, Steve Miller and John Capriotti Athletics Complex was inaugurated with the 36th annual Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Beynon Sports installed a new track surface (opening up the potential for Cal Poly to host Big West Conference Championship meets in the decade ahead), and a newly renovated Bermuda field was put into place inside the oval. The facility was dedicated midway through Cal Poly’s home invitational (founded on a yearly basis in 1983 as the Poly Royal Invitational), with a ceremony honoring Miller (Mustang head coach from 1976-81; Chairman of the Board of Directors for USATF since 2015) and Capriotti (an All-American for the Mustangs in 1978; Nike Vice President and Global Director of Athletics/ Running Track and Field since 2010) — each of whom were leading donors toward the renovation. In addition to Oregon — site of the 2021 IAAF World Games — Harvard, Yale, Stanford, USC, Ohio State, Auburn and Florida State are among the collegiate track & field programs also featuring Beynon surfaces. Meanwhile, the re-balanced infield’s drought-tolerant Bandera Bermuda grass is also used at Levi’s Stadium, Dodger Stadium, PETCO Park, StubHub Center and Home Depot Center. In association with Cal Poly Corporation, Associated Students, Inc. and Cal Poly Housing, the $1.6 million project was part of the comprehensive reshaping of the southeast corner of campus from Longview Lane to Grand Avenue, alongside neighboring Doerr Family Field adjacent to a new 435,000-square-foot student housing site.
