Publisher’s Message Not to sound cliché, but I seriously cannot believe it’s already August. This year has somehow simultaneously flown and dragged by. Usually in the August issue, it’s all about back to school for the kiddos and now even that seems to change day by day. The one thing we can cling to (besides our wine glass) is that this is an experience that we are all having at the same time. However, just because we are all going through it at the same time doesn’t mean that we aren’t all experiencing it in different ways. You may disagree with someone else’s views or how they are coping with everything, but that doesn’t make either of you right or wrong. Being more patient and understanding is something that we could all stand to do a little more often. We appreciate that Clarksville Living is the ‘go to’ source our readers have come to count on for local information on getting the most enjoyment out of life in Clarksville for the past thirteen years. We consider it a privilege to put a spotlight on ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things that give back to our community. Our local calendar of events is also slowly but surely coming back to life after the lockdown so be sure to check it out starting on page 22! I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your summer and stay as cool as possible. The leaves will be turning soon and pumpkin spice everything will be here before you know it. Meanwhile, stay healthy, wash your hands, wear a mask and think about how you might be able to help your more vulnerable neighbors, friends and relatives get through the coming weeks or months with less stress. As always, thank you for picking us up!

Why a Primary Care Doc Is Important

Y

ou might be surprised by the benefits of visiting your primary care provider regularly. According to one study from the Journal of General Internal Medicine, people who consistently saw the same primary care provider reported being more satisfied with their healthcare overall than people who saw different providers when they got sick. One reason for that satisfaction could be that primary care providers offer continuity. They can talk with you about chronic health problems, such as allergies, sore throats or joint pain, and either treat them before they get out of control or refer you to the right specialist 6

Brought to you by Tennova Healthcare – Clarksville

for additional care — saving you the effort of finding or visiting a specialist who may or may not be able to help. That continuity of care could even save you money: One Annals of Family Medicine study found that people with certain chronic health conditions who consistently saw the same provider had lower overall healthcare costs than people who visited various doctors and clinics. The primary care providers at Tennova Family Medicine – Tiny Town can help you stay up to date on annual wellness visits. Our Family Practice office is open for in-person visits, telehealth appointments and walk-ins. including chronic conditions like diabetes or ongoing heart issues, routine health checks and seasonal illnesses. Telehealth simply means a doctor visit on the phone or via video using a smartphone or computer. You will be able to talk with your provider from the comfort of your home or other locations just as you would in the doctor’s office. If you need to come into the office to be seen, we are taking every precaution to provide a safe and clean environment. fresh ideas for the perfect

SUMMERTIME SOIREE It has arrived, summer’s finale… August.

boards (pronounced shaar·koo·tr·ee) but in simple jargon, just call it a cheese board. This style of presentation eliminates the stress of dishes. That in itself is a win-win. Use a cutting board or a flat tray to display your food. Don’t fuss too much, just go with the basics.

How quickly the days and weeks of March-July passed as we grappled to establish adjusted daily routines and rethread to a new normal during this pandemic. While it remains important to stay home, wear a mask, and keep six feet of distance from one another, it is also vital that we get outside and enrich our lives through giving, sharing, learning, and neighbors. Stay healthy by shaking off stress and layering in new memories with some good old-fashioned fun. With August’s sunny days and hot balmy nights, our yearning increases for something cool to take the edge off. For me, our porch and yard have been places to recharge and stay calm. Why not plan an alfresco evening serving delicious bites and cool beverages? Create your own backyard or porch party, kick off your shoes and run through the grass barefoot, bite into your favorite fruit and let the juice run down your chin, don’t forget to laugh and chat with others…. as long as it’s an alligator’s length away.

PROSECCO APEROL SPRITZ Who would decline a classic summer spritzer? I sure hope no one. With a glorious blend of sparkling prosecco wine, fresh citrus, and a tangy liqueur this is an easy favorite. Our daughter mixed up a few of these this spring for us to sample. We sat and sipped on our screened porch, enjoying the cool breeze and uncomplicated conversation, as frogs serenaded us. She shared her ingredient list and recipe, and then we promptly added it to our list of keepers. Now, you can too.

My current favorite drinks and nibbles include Frosé and a Prosecco Aperol Spritz served with a charcuterie board. Frosty cocktails and delicious bites are light and refreshing and the perfect accompaniment for watching the sunset transition into a twinkling night sky. Just remember, one unforgettable evening can spark another, and then another, and just like that-before you know it, you will have mastered the recipe for leaving worry far behind. FROSÉ I first sampled Frosé during a book club gathering. The book review that evening was deep and heavy, but this drink was fresh, frosty, and unforgettable. Plus, Frosé receives bonus points because it is made in batches ahead of time, so the focus is on relaxing instead of having to remix every time you have an empty glass. CHARCUTERIE BOARD This easy-yet impressive way to serve appetizers is the perfect complement for a relaxed, no-fuss evening. There are many blogs and posts dedicated to extraordinary boards and plates. Most will refer to them as charcuterie

Select three-five cheeses, assorted crackers, fruit, nuts, olives, veggies, and/or a cured meat. Always check your pantry and refrigerator first, then see what’s in season. This will save you time and dollars. Small bowls filled with honey or jam are sweet accompaniments and make the board just about perfect. Enjoy!

a new way to play

S

pring and summer 2020 look different for many ball playing families. Usually, evenings are filled with practice or private lessons. Weekends involve traveling for tournaments or playing games locally. Clarksville Montgomery County recreational leagues have been put on hold, and no one knows for how long. Some travel ball teams have resumed practice and play, but not all. The month of August brings about new opportunities for ball players, as many travel ball teams hold their tryouts throughout the month. Clarksville is fortunate enough to be welcoming a new type of team for area softball enthusiasts, and it will all begin on August 1.

Tennessee Synergy is the creation of local Keli Jo Storz. Many softball families are already familiar with Storz, through her work as a PE teacher at Carmel Elementary and former softball and girls basketball coach at West Creek High School. They may have heard of her highly sought after private softball lessons or PE Camps at ACME Athletics, or have heard about how she led a local rec softball team to state in the summer of 2019 in a record setting season. What many don’t know is that Storz herself is a former college softball player, pitching coach at University of West Alabama, and Division I coach at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. Why did this accomplished coach decide to invest the time and energy to create a new softball program in Clarksville? It’s all about the process. KJ Storz clearly loves softball. Anyone who has seen her teach or coach knows that she has exceptional skill at identifying a child’s strengths and helping them grow in ways they never imagined. The girls she led to state in 2019 learned quickly that Storz never puts the focus on simply winning, in fact sometimes she feels that losing is more valuable than winning because of what can be learned from the experience. She focuses on teaching the actual process of the game, making sure every 10

child understands the dynamics of softball, and building a team that can develop over time. This is especially important to Storz, because she and husband Mark are raising their own children who are in this age group. The team was born out of their daughter’s desire to play ball, when the public health crisis seemed to have shut down every available option. Her philosophy of coaching is clear. Storz says, “Building a team is like building a puzzle. Athletes are the puzzle pieces, and when they all work together it creates a complete picture”. It is this philosophy that drives the creation of this new team. There is an old saying "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts". It is this definition of Synergy that led to the name of this new team. Storz states that building a cohesive team depends not on just taking every girl who wants to play softball, it depends more on filling a roster with players who fully ‘buy in’ to the process, are willing to work together, learn and grow together, and develop their own strengths. For girls aged 10 and under, seeing themselves as an important piece of the larger puzzle can be a powerful and impactful thing. Storz’ own experience playing travel ball in her youth shapes her planning for the team’s future. She sees the value of making memories with friends, growing a love of the game, and developing strengths as more important than bells and whistles that sometimes come with travel teams. Her goal for the team has minimalistic beginnings, less expensive than some other options but with a strong emphasis on the heart of the game. The team will begin in the fall of 2020 as a 10U (age 10 and below) team, with plans to develop and grow up in age each year as the program begins to take shape. Tryouts will be held July 31 & August 1, 2020 and will continue each weekend until the roster is filled. One thing that is frequently a topic of conversation for families whose daughters are interested in softball is the opportunities that may come from the game. The number of players in our area

Clarksville Living

who are committing to play college ball is a point of pride for a community the size of ours. Storz points to recent CHS seniors, all of whom signed to play softball in colleges as they graduated. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) there are over 1,600 college softball programs currently across the U.S. The NCAA offers 286 Division I programs, 264 Division II programs and 392 Division III programs. The NAIA offers 205 programs while the NJCAA offers 470 programs across the country. While each division or supervisory organization has a different emphasis, number of scholarships available, and approach to academics for athletes, they all remain an incredible source of opportunity for players who could benefit from the college monies that are offered. Beyond the joy of playing a game you love, there are scholarships available in a wide range of amounts. A full ride would be a blessing to any family, but even a 10% scholarship could potentially save thousands of dollars for a family over the course of a four year educational investment. Storz’ experience as a DI coach makes her uniquely aware of the requirements that college recruiters will be looking for, and gives her insight in how to recognize talents in each player and encourage them to develop. Yet it isn’t college scholarships, tournament rings, or showmanship that drives her to put time and energy into developing a softball program for our community. It all comes back to the process. Teaching the dynamics of the game, so that players know it inside and out no matter what happens in any given game or what opponent they face. The process of developing a strong understanding and building heart, that is the foundation of this team. A love of the game, teaching heart, skill, and teamwork one puzzle piece at a time because the whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts. This is what Tennessee Synergy will be working toward, a new way to play.

For more information regarding Tennessee Synergy, you can find the team on Facebook as Tennessee Synergy 10U. You may also contact Coach Storz at tennesseesynergy@outlook.com

Curt Ryle:

SONGWRITER TO THE STARS

T

ucked away on a hillside near Swan Lake, Curt Ryle sits in his home studio, quietly making music that is being heard around the world. And now, he is teaching hundreds online, the secrets of songwriting.

Ryle, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, studio musician, producer and publisher, has been playing guitar since he was three or four years old. He has been playing professionally since he was ten. Originally from Oklahoma, Ryle spent some time in Missouri, and then Dallas, Texas where he performed

nightly at the world famous Longhorn Ballroom, for Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing. Ryle was the bandleader. One night the owner came by and said, 'I want to do an album of original songs for our 25th anniversary. Do any of you guys know how to write a song?' Ryle raised his hand, and went to work writing about ten songs. His boss loved them. They went into the studio and recorded them all. About two weeks later, Mel Tillis was performing there, and somehow heard a copy of the album. “Mel Tillis called me on the phone,” Ryle said. “He was stuttering pretty bad, and I thought someone was pulling a joke on me, so I hung up on him. He called back and said, 'why the hell you hang up on me for,' That's when I realized it was him.” Ryle laughs. Tillis immediately flew Ryle to Nashville and signed him to his publishing company, as a songwriter.

Cremations, Pre-Arranged Funerals,

“The first three songs that got recorded from that first batch I wrote, became pretty big hits. First it was George Jones with The Real McCoy, then Clinton Gregory did One Shot at a Time, and Gene Watson took another to #1. That was my first experience with song writing.”

Ryle went on to write for several people, including Billy Ray Cyrus and many others, but eventually got tired of writing and became a studio musician. Over the years, he played for Trisha Yearwood, Taylor Swift, and countless others.

wanted to keep the job, so I bought a guitar, then spent 15 or 16 hours a day working on the songs for the show. It worked out fine, and I did that for five years. “I also played on John Anderson's Seminole Wind. If you turn on your radio today, you'll hear me on something before the day is over.” Ryle estimates he has been on 200,000 or more recordings during his career. So, how did this prolific music-maker get to Clarksville.

“I came to Clarksville after a 25-year marriage ended,” Ryle said. “My best friend pulled a 'Cyrano' on me. He got online and pretended to be me. He was talking to this beautiful lady. Eventually, a date was set up, and I agreed to go. When we met, I confessed pretty quickly, that it hadn't been me talking to her. She laughed and said, 'it wasn't me either, it was my son. I don't even know how to turn on a computer.' “So, our first date was at the Grand Ole Opry. I introduced her to Garth Brooks, she didn't know him and said, 'oh, what do you do here?' Garth said, 'I'm the janitor.' She said, well this place looks really nice.' Garth looked at me and said, 'maybe you ought to marry her,' and I said, 'maybe I will.'” Curt and Mia did get married, and he moved to Clarksville. “Here is today's message,” Ryle said. “'Hello to the best songwriters on the internet. Welcome back to the workshop, and thank you for participating in this great song about our military veterans. This song looks great and I love it, however we are going to take a detour in our last verse.' What I'm doing is teaching these people how to write. Some of these folks have been doing this with me for almost three years, and they've gotten really good.

Curt's son, Brayden Ryle, performing on his popular youtube channel

studio, and a who's who of Nashville writers and musicians have driven to Clarksville to work with him. “I get people from all over the world,” Ryle said. “I produce music for Vanessa Bourne, she's a top artist in Australia. I have pictures on the wall of my artists, from Ohio, Florida, Canada, and Germany. This little Clarksville studio has become a very popular place to record, for artists from all over the world.” His son, Brayden Ryle, 14 years old, has become a YouTube star. One of his songs has millions of views. Brayden has performed all over the world, and is currently nominated for several JOSIE awards, but that is another story.

“I don't know where those first songs came from,” Ryle said. “I knew I was a pretty good guitar player, bur I didn't know I could write songs. But, now I'm back to songwriting, in a fun way. I started Songwriters Workshop about two years ago. One day I had a couple of free hours. I thought I should post something to let people know I was still alive. I posted, 'I think I'm going to write a song, does anybody want to join me?' So far, about 600 people have joined him on his Facebook page. Ryle and his online writers are working on a song right now for the military, a major donor will be giving to veterans, and this song is part of that project.

Songwriters Workshop's new song is called A Veteran's Prayer. Ryle takes me to the first lines and then explains the process. (1) He wakes up in a cold sweat, visions haunt his dreams again, (2) through tearstained eyes he watched his comrades fall, (3) he's still fighting battles that he knows he just can't win, (4) “tries to mask the pain with drugs and alcohol. Pre-chorus: With a purple broken heart he surrenders all. Then it goes into the chorus. Curt then picks up a guitar, and on the spot sets the words to music. He instinctively feels the melody, the key, the chords, and the changes of the song. “I set the format,” Ryle said. “I tell them, I need this many syllables, and I need this line to rhyme with this line, etc. It's all spelled out. I'll read lines and say, this is why this line doesn't work, so I'm always teaching. Slowly but surely they get better. I just signed one of the writers to my publishing company. “All these creative people post lines. I read them

everyday at 9 a.m. and I call out the winner for the day. On this song we needed a pre-chorus to set up the chorus, and in this case, one line was all it took. So, we'll write two or three verses, and a repeating chorus. Sometimes, we'll do a bridge, if the songs needs it. It takes about two weeks to write a song using this format.” Once the lyrics are written, and Ryle has written the music, it's time to record. “I call my Nashville studio musician friends. They are the best in the world. I don't work with amateurs. I work with the best guys, and there is no charge for any of this. It's our way of giving back.” So far, Ryle's group has put together about 30 songs. Every contributor's name is written on the credits. If a song starts making money, they will all get a piece of it. But, Curt says they don't do this for money, it's about learning and having fun. “We do everything from country to pop, to southern rock and swing, all genres. Go to Curt Ryle's Songwriter's Workshop, and you can click on the songs you want to hear. They are all on Youtube. Some of these folks want to be songwriters, most are just having fun. One of them told me, 'Curt if you ever stop doing this, I'll get off the internet for good.' So, some of them live to do this.

wrote Tennessee Whiskey, and a bunch of songs for George Strait. I don't pick their lines and they know I'm messing with them. I'll say 'this Dean Dillon almost pulled one off. If he keeps trying, he's going to get really good at this.'” Ryle laughs. Some of his writers get a line in just about every song now. The catch is, they're only allowed one line per song. Every line in a song is written by a different contributor. “At first, this was just for fun,” Ryle said. “But, these songs are too good to not do something with. I'm a real stickler about the lines we use, but these writers are getting better. They really understand technique and structure, now.” Big Matador is the studio. Black Ribbon is the record company. Prevention is better than a cure!

ugust marks the month of National Immunization Awareness, which is an excellent opportunity to remind our community to vaccinate their pets. Like humans, pets are at risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Providing your pets with their annual vaccinations is essential for a healthy, happy life.

make a difference. Please do your part and keep your pets up to date on vaccinations. Take a stand against overpopulation by spaying and neutering your pets. Opt to adopt a shelter fur baby today. Not ready to adopt? Consider becoming a foster pet pare

Immunizations for pets are split into two categories: core and non-core vaccinations. The ones that are recommended for ALL dogs and cats are deemed core vaccinations. These include rabies, canine/feline Distemper, Adenovirus 1 & Adenovirus 2, Parainfluenze and Parvovirus vaccines. Non-core vaccines depend on your pet’s lifestyle and can be situational in their necessity. For example, if your pet frequently visits doggy daycare, dog parks or are boarded for the weekend often, these additional vaccinations might be a good idea. These immunizations include Leptospirosis, Bordetella (Kennel cough), Lyme’s Disease and Coronavirus. Required by law, the rabies vaccination is administered to both dogs and cats. Rabies vaccinations are essential to prevent this fatal virus. Puppies and kittens receive their first rabies vaccine between the age of 14 - 16 weeks. Check with your vet to determine when your pet is due and inquire about a one year or three-year vaccination. Although not required by law, the following vaccines are HIGHLY recommended to ensure your puppy, kitten, dog and cat remain healthy. Puppies and kittens are most vulnerable. Depending on your veterinarian, vaccinations will start at age six weeks. Vaccines are administered at ages 9 and 12 weeks additionally. Some vets will give a booster at six months. Protect your pet today by vaccinating – “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Puppies receive the 7-1 Vaccine which includes: Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Distemper, Hepatitis, Bordetella, Litospirosis and Coronavirus. Once they have reached 1 year of age, annual vaccinations will be given. An annual appointment is essential to ensure your pet remains up to date, healthy and happy. Please understand that it makes no difference if your pet is an inside or outside pet. They are vulnerable to airborne viruses no matter what your lifestyle. The five most common vaccinations for kittens and cats are as follows: Herpes (Rhinotraceitis), Calici, Panleukopenia (feline distemper), Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Rabies (required by law). Kittens, like puppies, are at high risk for exposure to infectious diseases. Your veterinarian will vaccinate your kitten at the age of 7, 10 and 13 weeks. Your adult cat will receive annual boosters (7-1 vaccine) and rabies vaccines can be given every three years, once your pet is deemed healthy by your vet. Together we can
