Some of you might be thinking that the best thing about 2020 is that it’s almost over. I don’t disagree. It’s been a difficult, exhausting year of disruption thanks to an invisible virus we still don’t know enough about or have under control, and this year has divided us as much as it has brought us together. On a more festive note, surely you noticed this month’s magical cover with Santa & Ghost. Ghost was the winner of our third annual pet cover contest. Thank you to all who entered and please know choosing the winner was not easy. We’d have them all on the cover at once if we could! As always, we’re grateful to Daphne Treadway for capturing beautiful moments like this that are sure to put a smile on even the Grinch’s face. Taylor Lieberstein is back with her annual local holiday shopping guide and it’s bigger than ever. Shopping local benefits all of us, even amidst a pandemic. The variety and quality of our locally produced gifts and experiences is impressive and will make your holiday shopping a breeze. (Begins on page 6) Our calendar is also jam-packed with all kinds of local holiday fun (starting on page 28). Just be sure to safely plan ahead by calling or checking the business’s social media pages for any changes or cancellations. The Clarksville Speedway is hosting their annual Christmas Light Show for the 6th year in a row. Offering a socially distanced drive through Christmas experience with over three million lights! See pages 22 & 23 for all the details, discount nights and more. As much as we’d all like to believe that the chaos and uncertainty that was 2020 will magically expire on December 31st, we know that isn’t the case. One day high school kids will have a chapter in their history books devoted to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2021 (and hopefully not beyond!). Perhaps the CMCSS virtual reality classrooms of the future will reference some issues of Clarksville Living from this past year, and they’ll learn a little about what day-to-day life was really like and will see that it wasn’t all bad. Such as how their community stepped up to help each other during the pandemic, got creative to keep schools and businesses going, and found ways to distract themselves from boredom and isolation and how we carried that strength and resiliency forward into the new year. All of us at Clarksville Living Magazine wish you a merry Christmas and a safe, and happy new year. We hope you get everything you want, and especially what you need.

This year it’s especially important that we seek out gifts that support small businesses in and around the Clarksville community. incorporated into a piece that will endure for a long time to come.” The next challenge for any entrepreneur is how to launch a product. Time and place are critical factors in making or breaking an idea. “With the shirts, I was thinking, how and where do I want to sell these,” Allen said. “I don't want to post them on Facebook. They are so unique. I had to think of the best way to present them to the public. Clarksville is growing day by day, and starting to have some great boutiques downtown, and all throughout the city.” Allen decided to organize a pop-up event. Trilogy at The Ruby Cora became a low-key debut of Allen's new product line. “I was so busy planning that event, I didn't know if I would be able to be a vendor.” Allen said. “Luckily, I was able to take a few of my designs. I was thankful that I had several ready to go, and I was able to get them in front of people.” Trilogy was a success. It's now being considered as an annual, or twice-a-year event. It brought vendors from Clarksville and Nashville, and created a unique shopping experience.

If this goes as I hope, I would love to have a store of my own someday. We'll see how things go with the website and popup events.

“Photography will always be my main job, it's my passion, and I still love it. It works so well for me as a single mom of a five-year-old. HELPING SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER TO LOCAL KIDS & FAMILIES IN NEED

C

an you imagine a child not having a gift to open for Christmas? All across Montgomery County, children are preparing their wish lists and parents are busy trying to locate all the latest items that their child desires. None of us wants a child to go without a gift during the holidays, but this year in particular means that families might need assistance to make their child’s wishes come true.. Every year, Urban Ministries works diligently to help families who need assistance in providing their children with gifts for a special Christmas. Their traditional Christmas store held at Madison Street United Methodist Church had to be reimagined to provide for members of our community in a way that allowed for increased safety and health protocols, like so many things this year. It is through this need that “Christmas For Kids”, to be held on December 12, 2020 was created. Deborah Ashcraft is a familiar face for many members of our community. As Grace Assistance Program Manager at Urban Ministries, she has worked tirelessly to implement the Food Distribution program. This ministry has

18

increased in size since it began in March, with the November distribution day seeing 797 food boxes being given to Montgomery County families. Deborah was also heavily involved in the recent “Turkeys for Troops” event, where military families were given turkeys for Thanksgiving completely without cost. When it became apparent that the format used for the Christmas store concept would not work this year, Debbie went to work. She spent hours researching and collaborating with the “Last Minute Toy Store” in Nashville to come up with ideas to transform this community outreach program into a COVID safe event. Debbie says that her motivation is that she cannot bear the thought of any child not having a gift to open on Christmas. It is this motivation that drives her and countless volunteers who have worked to make this event a reality. The first hurdle that had to be crossed was to figure out and secure a location that would be able to handle the number of people needed to pull off such an event. Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett graciously offered the use of the Wilma Rudolph event center, which will allow families to pick up the gifts in a completely contactless manner. The second hurdle was to determine how families would choose gifts, since the store concept used in the past could not be used. This is where CMCSS school counselors and Montgomery County social service agencies stepped in. Through their existing relationships Clarksville Living

with families, wishlists for each child who will be receiving gifts this year have been distributed. These professionals are in the unique position of being able to reach out to the families that they know can benefit from this program, to ensure that the children can receive the gifts that they would like. The third hurdle was the procurement of the actual gifts. In the past, the congregation of Madison Street United Methodist Church has provided the lion’s share of gifts for this program. Last year, church families were assigned specific

"Debbie says her motivation is that she cannot bear the thought of any child not having a gift to open on Christmas." age groups for gifts to bring in based on the beginning letter of their last name. This year, church families participated in a special offering to provide for the purchase of the items on the wish lists. The Outreach ministries of MSUMC also set aside funds for this purpose. Urban Ministries also accepted some toys and gift items, as well as monetary donations, from various

businesses and local community groups to be applied to the purchase of gifts. It is with these monetary donations that Debbie Ashcraft and a team of volunteers began shopping for the items on children’s wish lists, collected by school counselors and social service agencies. Beginning on November 30, teams of volunteers have been shopping for the gifts listed on the wishlists. This process has taken several days, and many hours. Once the gifts have been purchased, an army of volunteers will begin sorting and packaging the gifts. Each family will receive a bag with their child’s gifts, gift wrap, tape and name tags. Families will receive a voucher from their school counselor or social service agent with a specific time and date for their gift pick up. Volunteers will have each bag prepared and waiting to be distributed to families in the same manner that food distribution takes place. Families will drive into the designated areas at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center, open their trunk or hatch, and volunteers will place their bags into the vehicle. Completely contact free, safe and healthy! Many volunteers are needed for all of this to take place. Austin Peay State University football players have requested to be on hand to help with the distribution, pending university approval. Dozens of volunteers who have helped with the Food Distribution program will also be on hand to sort and distribute the gift bags. Urban Ministries expects to provide gifts for 150-200 families at the December 12 event. None of it will be possible without donations, time and effort from volunteers. No matter how many things change this holiday season, the motivation to create happy Christmas memories for children in our community is strong. Dozens of people are working tirelessly to make this special event take place. If you would like to make a donation for the purchase of gifts for children in Montgomery County you may send those to Urban Ministries 217 South 3rd Street Clarksville, TN 37040. Please note on your donation that you would like for the funds to be used for Christmas for Kids. If you are interested in volunteering, call 931-648-9090 or connect with Urban Ministries via their Facebook page. In this season of giving, “Christmas For Kids” is working to give to the youngest members of our community.

Phone Scam targets & threatens clarksville Realtors.

C

larksville realtors are busy folks. One only has to drive through any part of our county to see dozens of real estate signs in both new and existing neighborhoods. Clarskville/ Montgomery County has a solid real estate market, which means that area realtors work hard. Part of a successful real estate business is marketing. Realtors not only have their names and contact info on listing signs, but on advertisements, cards, social media, and multiple listing services. Exposure is a plus for engaging with customers. In some situations, having your name and contact information available to the public can be a scary and dangerous thing. Recently some local realtors have found themselves in frightening situations. Mainly targeting female real estate agents, scammers are going to great lengths to try and make a profit. I spoke to a real estate agent who asked that her name be withheld about the incidents. She shared with me that she is only one of five women in her office alone that have been the target of these scary tactics. Her story began with a call to her cell phone. She often has calls coming from unknown numbers, because her contact information is given on listings, signs and cards throughout the community. This particular call registered on her phone as coming from the Montgomery County Sheriff Department. When she answered, a man identified himself as an officer seeking to let her know that she had missed several court dates. The officer’s name was one she knew to be legitimate. He informed her that she was being subpoenaed by a past client for a case involving a real estate contract. The man posing as an MCSD officer began giving her instructions to send money to settle court fees and fines, as well as resolve a warrant for her arrest due to these alleged missed court dates. Using scare tactics and mind control, the officer gave her instructions on how much money to withdraw, where to send the funds, and more. She was understandably frightened. Having never been in any sort of court proceedings before, she was coerced by the familiar client names and information about her business that the officer gave her. She followed the instructions, sending several thousand dollars to settle her supposed court fees and fines.

By Paige Eisemann

had indeed used a real MCSD employee’s name, but the legitimate officer had not contacted her. It can only be assumed that the scammer gathered information about previous sales and clients from public access records and used spoofing and lies to deceive her into sending money. The lengths that this scammer went to are staggering. Five realtors in one office have reported the same type of calls, with several other offices reporting similar threatening situations taking place in the last few weeks.

"The man posing as an MCSD officer began giving her instructions to send money to settle court fees and fines, as well as resolve a warrant for her arrest due to these alleged missed court dates." The calls seem to come to different agents several times a week. The targets appear to be predominantly female realtors. The spoofing of an official government telephone number and use of actual officers names creates fear for those who are targeted. Pending arrest, climbing fines, even suspension of

After sending the payment as instructed, the realtor called the MCSD to verify that the matter was resolved. Speaking to an acquaintance she had known since childhood, she recounted her story. It was then that she learned that although her cell phone logged the call as coming from the MCSD, the caller had spoofed the number. The officer

their real estate license are the threats used to intimidate. Being targeted because your name and contact information are public due to the nature of your livelihood is nothing new, but it is becoming far too common in our community. The real estate agent who shared her story with me felt that this situation needed to be shared because she does not want anyone else to fall victim to this scam. Her concern was that if the ruse had continued, she might have given them even more money. Imagine if an elderly person were targeted, and these scammers were able to get away with their savings? Any person who deals with the public through their business could be a potential target for this type of scam and she wants others to know that the intimidation and fear while frightening, is not legitimate. There are many such scams being conducted in our area, many of which use cell phone calls and texts as a means to contact unsuspecting citizens. If you or someone you love receives this type of call, you are urged to disengage and contact MCSD directly. Report the details of the contact so that these scammers can be located and stopped.

o many events have been put on hold this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and because of that, people have had to adjust. Clarksville Speedway is keeping the spirit of the holidays alive this year with their holiday light show featuring over 3 million lights.

The speedway’s event offers a socially distanced drive-thru Christmas activity as the novel Coronavirus continues to present challenges for traditional, indoor gatherings. How to take Holiday Pet Photos like a Pro

H

oliday pet photos are awesome, aren’t they? You can use them for your Christmas cards or for making a keepsake ornament.

By Christina Chittenden

I inquired with a professional pet photographer for some insider tips I am sure you will find very helpful.

HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL TIPS THAT WERE SHARED FOR TAKING GREAT PHOTOS OF YOUR DOG OR CAT AT CHRISTMASTIME:

The #1 problem that photographers see when people try to take good photos of their pets, is that they try to take them standing up. This is a no-no. You’ve got to get down on their eye level.

1. If you use Christmas lights or a Christmas tree as your backdrop, try and keep your pet at a distance from the lights. Most cameras will then focus on the pet allowing the Christmas lights to appear blurry in the picture.

You can place them in a nice frame, or post them to social media, or just keep them posted on your fridge to enjoy throughout the season. After all, your doggie or kitty is the most handsome boy or girl ever, right? And of course, you consider them part of the family. Holiday pet photos are a fun way to express our love for our furry companions, which we can then use to share joy with our friends and family. But how do you get that “perfect” photo when your pet isn’t necessarily on board with modeling?

24

Clarksville Living

2. You can use wrapping paper as your backdrop when taking pictures. It’s a cheap and simple way to have your pet posing with a cute Christmas or holiday backdrop. 3. Have an assistant with you if possible. It’s very hard to get your pet’s attention while you’re taking a picture. 4. Use snacks or noisemakers to get your pet’s attention. 5. Try not to use your flash on your camera so you don’t get those glowing red eyes. 6. Don’t forget the props! 7. And don’t forget the most

important tip: When you’re taking pictures, make sure you’re on the same eye level as your pet. Enjoy this wonderful Christmas season!

UGLY SWEATER RUN. 2:00PM How did Christmas gain such an outsized purchase on our imaginations and our bank accounts? A quick course from Saturnalia to Santa! We trace the history of Christmas from the birth of Jesus and the writing of the Christian gospels to the celebration of Christmas Day and the Christmas Season, the setting of the date on the Roman calendar, and the slow addition of traditions about the Magi, St. Nicholas and Santa Claus. Along the way to the commercial extravaganza we now know, we take some side trips to ask how the Reformers and the Puritans celebrated, how Charles Dickens got involved, what happened in the '50s, and what the war on Christmas is all about. Join us for three weeks of cultural and historical contextualizing about our favorite holiday. First Presbyterian Church 213 Main St Clarksville, TN 37040
