Hello DAMchic Readers! Surrealism, in regard to fashion, is an interesting subject to us because it seeks to awaken the unconscious mind and release whatever creative energies we have stored up. It’s a whirlwind of color and patterns that overwhelm our senses. It is a movement of liberation; a beautiful follow-up from our Uprise Issue. This term, our staff was put to the test and challenged to create a metaphysical- themed issue that would interest and surprise you. I think you will be impressed with the results. Expect to see a colorful palette and a variety of printed patterns on garments this spring. This season is all about reaching outside of the norm and drawing attention to clothing that stimulates deeper thinking. We’re feeling restless on campus and what better way to express that antsy feeling right before summer with an outfit inspired by Salvador Dali? Feeling a little overwhelmed by this bizarre trend? Feel free to tone it down and introduce surrealism into your home by visiting our Interior’s Section and picking out a couple pieces to jazz up your place. Are you more interested in introducing some new good vibes to your ears? Check out our music section for some surrealism-inspired tunes that one of our contributors recommended. As always, our fashion sections are spot-on for some major wardrobe inspiration. I would also like to express how excited we are to introduce DAMchic’s second spring issue. It was this time last year that we officially launched DAMchic as an official publication and we have come so far since. It’s a fun and nostalgic time within our staff and as always, we are so incredibly grateful for all of the support we have received since the launch of The Wanderlust Issue. I am excited to introduce to you all The Metaphysical Issue, our most abstract and artistic issue yet. We can’t wait to see what trends you’ll be rockin’ on campus this spring. Xx, Katie Sherpe

ashion and surrealism began as an art movement in the early 20th century embodied by emotions of uprising and hatred towards the atrocities of the First World War. The term ‘surrealism’ coined by French poet Guillaume Apollinaire describes an expression that passes realism (translated from French). Surrealism surpasses reality and transitions into an alternate state of mind characterized by the evocative juxtaposition of incongruous images of the unconscious and dream elements – principles that have rapidly diffused into other forms of art like music, photography, film and especially fashion. André Breton, the founder of surrealism defined surrealism as “pure psychic automatism.” The form it has taken does the phrase justice. With its roots in France the strong historic origins of the movement and its various influential affil13
global iates have led to its spread across the world. It had already entered the mainstream media by mid-1930s when fashion designers enthusiastically welcomed the idea of adding rather outrageous details to outfits and accessories – all of which was previously taboo. From wearing high heeled hats in the 30’s to Lavin’s lip and eye motifs, all sorts of peculiar objects have been incorporated in fashion over the years. Salvador Dali, another influential surrealist of the 1930s, pioneered the concept of “weird, wacky and wonderful” fashion for women in his cover paintings for Vogue. The 3 W’s seem to be timeless in their approach. Everyone is constantly looking for styles and trends to set them apart, and these patterns do just the trick! Surrealism has taken various forms since its conception. It is a living, breathing and ever-evolving animal, inspiring designers to delve into their subconscious to create the next ‘big thing’. Surrealism in the fashion world allows for imagination to amalgamate with our appearance and somehow combine the intrinsic with the outwardly. Even modern renowned designer labels have used surrealistic techniques to add color and a distinct shade of ‘crazy’ to their fashion. My personal favorite modern designers like Christian Dior, YSL, Moschino, 3.1 Philip Lim, Celine and Alexandra McQueen have all sculpted their wear to scream ‘fearless.’ The same trend is also revived in the world of hair and makeup as models, bloggers, musicians and actresses courageously flaunt weird as the new ‘in’. It is certain that the affiliation between surrealism and fashion is the one that has come to stay whether it is in the form of designer labels, hair & makeup or even DIY. The beauty of today’s fashion is that most of it can pass as surrealistic; however every era has its distinct definition of surrealism. What once started as a shield against harshness is now the foundation of imagination and modern runways. Fashion has become the relief from the real world: an escape from what lies outside and instead focusing on what is inside.

ne of the hottest trends this season is outlandish and eccentric. Pairing odd décor and furniture together makes a perfect medley of weird. There are many levels of decorating for New Surrealism and depending on how far you want to travel into weird and strange will depend on your lifestyle. Before you delve into the crazy world of surrealism, here are some questions you should ask yourself. How often do you entertain at your home? Do your friends and family that visit have the same taste as you do, or do they understand your taste? Would anyone (like children or grandparents) feel uncomfortable being in my home because of the décor I chose? The last thing you want to do is make someone close to you feel uncomfortable and not want to come visit your Spoonflower-Weave Mosaic Bridget home. There are many different avenues of surrealism; for example think of the differences between surreal art made by Salvador Dali versus Joan Miró. Surrealien.de has a Warp Your Room option where you give them your wall dimensions and they will develop custom “warped� wallpaper. Check out the images below (or above) to see examples of their work. Besides painting or hanging art this is the easiest way to bring a punch of dynamic graphics to your space. fter the snow and rain begin to dispel and the sun begins to shine, there is no better feeling than being outside breathing the cool spring air. This is the perfect time to gather the girls (or guys) together for some yummy food while catching up. Decide on a theme and scour your local stores and online for the best deals for decorating. The theme I decided to go with was a quirky mismatch fit for the Queen of Quirk herself, Zooey Deschanel. Often when shopping I would ask myself, what would Zooey do, WWZD? Well, Zooey would definitely take animal figurines, paint them gold, and scatter them about for funny conversation starters. She would also want to make her guests feel extremely comfortable and create little seating areas for them to relax. But most importantly, she would have a variety of cute little snack foods to appease all her friends and guests.

Mixing and matching prints and colors is a fine art. The best way to make it cohesive while avoiding “matchy matchy” is to find a common color within your patterns. I chose yellow as my common thread between many of the pieces, mainly the tablecloths on all the tables. Easy ways to mix patterns and colors together are in your place settings. Rummage through your cupboards to see what you already have that could get a fresh take with new textiles such as; tablecloths, placemats, napkins, and napkin rings. See below how I made different place settings using an array of layered pieces. If your home or yard isn’t quite ready for guests, search for local spots like city parks or community areas. I found this adorable gazebo at Philomath City Park that was perfect for my soiree. Most likely the amenities will be free to use and sometimes you are able to reserve the spots to ensure that your party won’t be crashed by someone else. 19

This first look is an easy and subtle way to wear neon eye makeup. You can achieve this look with three steps: 1. Start with a blank canvas (foundation, powder, and concealer). 2. Pair blue shadow with black liner to create depth on your eyelids. 3. Finish the look with a sheer peach lip and a small amount of blue glitter on the eyelids.

Inspired by the tropical bird, this look incorporates colorful vibrancy and is the perfect makeup aesthetic to complete your festival outfit. Create it with these steps: 1. Start with your blank canvas including foundation, powder, and concealer. 2. Start at the corner section of your eye with the color of your choice. Gradually continue shading in the powder until you have a series of colors. 3. To create an opaque lip color, blend a small amount of concealer on your lips for a base. From there, apply a lip color of your choice. We decided on purple to match the section on the eye to make both stand out.

On top of these benefits, you are also getting protein from the whey powder, healthy omega-3 oils from the chia seeds, and necessary vitamins from the almond milk. E
very year, the Oregon State University puts on the Recycled Fashion show, giving students from all majors a chance to showcase their environmentally friendly designs in front of a large audience. I had the chance to interview a designer in the show, getting her input on the overall show, materials she used, and her inspiration. Rachel Draper, a senior at Oregon State University who’s majoring in apparel design & merchandising management with a minor in business fully utilized the show’s name, Trashin Fashion for her design. “My inspirations were a mix of 1950s and 1920s fashion. I wanted the overall shape to reflect the 50s, but the attitude to reflect the 20s.” With those inspirations in mind, Rachel used paper for the top of her design, then trash bags and strips of magazine covers for the jacket. For the skirt she used trash bags and safety pins. Knowing that she didn’t have a

lot of time to create her design, she started working on it at the beginning of the term. She mentioned that making strands of safety pins, weaving together magazine strips, and braiding trash bags for the trim of the jacket were the most difficult parts of her design. As an experienced designer who has showcased her work in the Spring Show last year and the Red Dress Fashion show this past fall, she said the recycled show is a challenge, because it is more of a materials challenge. “It’s more difficult to work with items that aren’t meant to be made into clothes. You have to take into consideration what materials you have available to you before finalizing your design” she explains. When I asked her if she had any expectations for the show, she replied, “I didn’t really have any expectations for the show. I was just excited to see my look and all my fellow designers looks come together and hit the runway.” The show did come together, thanks to the efforts of OSUFO, volunteers, and a fantastic audience who enjoyed Rachel’s and the other designer’s looks grace the runway.

Imagine a comic book character coming to life – strong and powerful with a hint of mystery. For this look, we were in-
spired by Pop art and aimed to capture this theme by using black and white to create contrasting lines and angles while adding a splash of bright lip color for an extra “bang!”

Inspired by pointillism, a painting technique in which dots of color are used to create patterns, this look uses metallic colors and shading techniques to create symmetrical designs that highlight different angles of the face.

Quilt’s Held in Splendor Hailing from Boston, Quilt’s sophomore album achieves the folky psychedelic mood that makes its audience question in which decade it was originally released. Held in Splendor is catchy in nature and begs to be heard in the morning light accompanied by some yoga poses and incense smoke. It has a transformative essence that flows easily but is equally complex as each track progresses in time. I will not be surprised when this album appears on multiple best of 2014 lists. by Allie Rogers Allie Rogers: What inspired you to major in business? Alex Scott: Being able to influence someone into purchasing something, the whole marketing aspect got me interested. AR: What about marketing caught your eye? AS: Being able to market a specific brand or product. Seeing what influences people to buy things caught my eye as well. One class in the marketing program is called Consumer Behavior and we studied why people act certain ways and why they purchase certain products. AR: Describe your dream job. AS: Promoting a brand for a company or working in marketing for a sports team. Nike maybe? AR: If you had the chance to double major what would it be? AS: I would double major in Communications or Psychology. I think marketing is like the psychology of business. Psychology would be a much deeper plunge into this arena and would be very interesting. AR: You are graduating this spring, do you have a job lined up? AS: I do not have a job lined up, but I am doing a lot of interviews right now. I have interviewed for Wagner Edstrom, Eventa, and Nike. Keeping my fingers crossed.
