Hidden Gem: Liv’s, Solihull Where Scandi-style fuses with rustic accessories, Liv’s in Solihull is at the top of our list for stylish yet cosy homeware. Norwegian-born Liv curated her self-named store with originality and quality in mind. Scandinavian influences abound, noticeable in both the product selection and the warm, down-to-earth ambience. For a dining room overhaul, Liv’s handmade Sherwood collection exudes farmhouse elegance, while the decorative trinkets will do wonders for a lacklustre shelving unit or coffee table. The ceramic bowl with balls in mustard (above right), £38, is our top pick. Style it with a selection of pillar candles in rich orange hues or simply pop it in the kitchen and fill it with fruit. There’s a fine balance between quality and price, and Liv’s gets it just right. Visit the store at 32-34 Mill Lane, Solihull, West Midlands, B91 3BA or head to livs.co.uk.

A NATURAL SELECTION Take a walk on the wild side with the quirky candle holders from Ian Snow. A purveyor of all things cute and classy, Ian Snow’s accessories are guaranteed talking points. Made from aluminium with a dazzling gold finish, these little creatures will enliven your dressing table. We’re big fans of the bug tealight holder (above) £6, and we also think the octopus candlestick holder would be a bold addition to a dining table. There are lots to choose from – mix and match to create your own gilded wilderness. Gold finish bug tealight holder, £6, Ian Snow

Letter of th monthe

Flower power I recently decorated my hallway, but struggled to find a wallpaper I really liked for under the stairs. I had a collection of 100 flower postcards from the Royal Horticultural Society, so I arranged them to cover the wall. I used PVA glue as adhesive and clear varnish to protect the postcards. I’m really pleased with the result – they make me smile every time I see them! Sarah Crabb, by email Your Home says We love quirky ideas and this is such an inventive way to decorate your hallway, Sarah. The floral postcards bring a fab dose of colour and vibrancy!

+ Sarah’s letter has won her a selection of lunchboxes worth £45!

Lockdown updates I’d been meaning to update my bathroom for a while and lockdown gave me the perfect opportunity to finally do it! A lick of paint and Moroccan wall art stickers ordered from Amazon were all that was needed. You can see the results below! Eibhlin Cronin, by email Your Home says Your bathroom looks lovely, Eibhlin. Those tile stickers were a great find – they complement the tonal colours beautifully!

A place in the country I was blown away by your May 2020 issue, particularly the Essential Guide to Outdoor Living supplement that was included with it. It was stunningly fabulous! I saw something I’d like to buy on almost every page and have since found some great alternatives to enhance my garden. I never miss a chance to be out in it looking at the smashing view and eating breakfast, lunch or dinner whenever the weather permits (that means not pouring or snowing!). I’ve sent some pics to a few of my friends recommending your magazine and I know they’ll be interested. Linda Christie, via email Your Home says We’re so glad you enjoy the magazine, Linda – and thank you for spreading the e word. Everyone here is envious of your idyllic Scottish surroundings! Your views are breathtaking.

Blue-tiful I used remnants of fabric to make a Roman blind with navy trim for my bathroom. I loved the navy trim so much that I decided to paint my washstand and bath panel to match. I used Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue and am so happy with the outcome! Colleen Agnew, by email Your Home says We’re very impressed with your painting, Colleen – it looks so professional. You can never go wrong with a classic navy blue.

EMAIL YOUR TIPS, PHOTOS AND LETTERS TO yourhome@immediate.co.uk. Letters can be posted to Your letters, Your Home magazine, Immediate Media Co, Eagle House, Colston Avenue, Bristol BS1 4ST, but please note that we may not see them for some time as we are currently working remotely. How to… Deep clean and organise your garage

Q&A

Perhaps because it gets so little traffic compared to the rest of the house, the garage can very quickly become a bit of an untidy eyesore. It might be languishing at the bottom of your list of chores, but a clear out and some organisation will make the garage look a lot better, as well as making it more practical. Follow these steps to get your garage in tip-top shape…

How can I clean my washing machine?

Editor’s Choice For an eco-friendly alternative to KTQVO ÅTU IVL NWQT TWWS VW N]Z\PMZ \PIV 7@7 [ +]\ 3MMX 8ZWL]KM ;I^MZ[ <PMQZ [QTQKWVM TQL[ KIV [\ZM\KP W^MZ UW[\ [PIXM[ IVL [QbM[ WN TMN\W^MZ NZ]Q\ IVL ^MO NWZ I PaOQMVQK IVL [QUXTM [\WZIOM [WT]\QWV <PMa ZM XIZ\QK]TIZTa ][MN]T NWZ X]VOMV\ XZWL]KM IVL MV[]ZM VW R]QKM[ M[KIXM QV\W \PM NZQLOM

The garage floor often becomes a carpet of clutter. Remove everything onto the driveway so you can properly sort through what you want to keep and what needs to be sold, donated or binned. Doing this will also reveal exactly how much space you have so you can assess how best to organise it. Once you have a clear space, the next task is the deep clean. Begin by dusting. Get rid of spider webs using a soft duster (if you have kids who love creepy crawlies, then get them to help out with this step) and wipe down any shelving units or built-in storage. If the walls are looking worse for wear, clean them up with a damp cloth dipped in warm soapy water. Then, tackle the floor. Either use a vacuum or a good old-fashioned broom to get rid of any leftover dust or debris, then mop it and allow it to dry fully. For a real spick and span garage, you could even give the walls and ceiling a fresh lick of paint. For optimum organisation and easy access, separate your garage into zones. By arranging it this way you’ll always know where to look for specific items, whether it’s a gardening implement or a tool for DIY. Depending on what you need to store, it might be easier to organise the space using shelves, cabinets, pegboards, wall hooks or a combination of them all. It’s probably wise to place your most-used items on open shelving units. You could also add storage boxes and label them for an extra neat and tidy finish.

You’d be forgiven for thinking the washing machine doesn’t need cleaning. But germs and bacteria do build up. First, check the rubber gasket around the door for mould and remove it with a standard mildew cleaner and a cloth or towel. Next, run the machine with a targeted cleaner such as Dr Beckmann Service-it Deep Clean Washing Machine Cleaner (£2.99 from dr-beckmann. co.uk). It gets rid of 99.9 per cent of bacteria and leaves your washing machine smelling delightful. Just make sure to leave the door open for a few hours afterwards to let it air.

YH Fab find If you find building up a savings pot a struggle, why not let a smartphone app do the hard work for you? Plum is a savings and investment ‘robot’ that analyses your spending and automatically saves money for you. The app links to your bank account and its algorithm monitors your spending, then it sets aside the amount you can afford to save each month without you having to change your shopping habits. You can adjust the amount you choose to save at any time so you’re always in control. It can also spot when you’re paying more than you should on your utility bills. The Plum app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and is regulated by the FCA. Find out more at withplum.com.

Cut your smartphone costs After your mortgage or rent, utility bills and food, your smartphone is probably the next biggest drain on your monthly budget, so it pays to find as many savings as you can. Q One way to see immediate savings is to use wi-fi whenever you can rather than your data. It’s easy when you’re at home or work, but harder on the go, so download any videos, music or podcasts at home to listen or watch later. Q You could also save up and buy a phone outright to avoid expensive monthly bills. If that’s not possible, get a zero per cent interest credit card to buy the phone and pay it off that way. Q With new models costing over £500 it’s no surprise gadget insurance is popular. But protection can be costly. Some networks charge as much as £14.99 a month, that adds up to more than £360 over a two-year contract. See if providers such as uk.protectyourbubble.com and

SMART SAVINGS The first rule of financial planning is clear your debts before you start to save. If you have big credit card bills, consider a low-cost loan instead. Credit card debt (APR 16.8 per cent) of £2,500 over five years will cost £1,212 in interest, while a loan of 7.8 per cent is £527. A saving of £685, which is enough to pay for this pair of Hampstead armchairs, £480, Garden Trading.

insurance2go.co.uk can give you a cheaper quote or see if you can save money by adding the phone to your home contents insurance. Q Buy a no-contract, used phone that’s unlocked (so you can use with any carrier) and can take a SIM card. Check out giffgaff.com or try eBay and Gumtree. Or just keep your old phone for longer, if it’s working, why change it? Q Unlimited data sounds great, but could mean bigger bills. Overuse it and the costs soon add up. Figures from comparison website uSwitch. com show that a quarter of us regularly exceed our data allowances, paying an extra £19.20 a year on average. Q If you’re not using your free minutes and texts, contact your provider and ask for a cheaper tariff. Figures from uSwitch.com show that two thirds of smartphone owners use fewer than half their minutes allowance each month.

Not any more: you can open and close the electric roller blinds from Swift Direct Blinds using your smartphone or tablet. The blinds can be controlled individually, by room or all together and come in a wide range of designs. Prices start at £52.12 from Swift Direct Blinds.

G andmillennial Channel the of-the-moment trend for all things glamorous, antique and vintage

T

rends are known for coming back into fashion, but the grandmillennial theme takes the returning grannychic style and gives it a lavish update – embroidered cushions, fancy frills and dainty florals never looked so luxe! The grandmillennial style is about showing an appreciation for the past with vintage designs and giving timeless hand-me-downs, reclaimed furniture and inherited pieces a fresh spin in a modern home. 18

yourhomestyle.uk

Previously kitsch items such as tasselled cushions, fringed lampshades, natural-fibre rugs, antique foxed mirrors and scalloped sofas are now blended with linear furniture and luxurious fabrics to create a sense of sophisticated glamour. Cane, rattan and wicker furniture are also back on the radar, along with detailed needlepoint (see page 17 to see more stitched homeware). This fresh take on vintage designs is complemented by incorporating an

abundance of indulgent textures, including plush velvet, soft feathers, crystal-clear glass and delicate porcelain to give homes an elegant feel. The colour palette for this scheme revolves around soft pastels, such as duck egg blue, blush pink, mouse grey, sage green and clean white. But there’s also room for mixing in a few jewel tones, think ochre and navy, plus plenty of golden accents to dial up the opulence.

GARDEN ROOM MAKEOVER

We just love our indoor-outdoor space Deborah Yates has transformed a dingy and dated garden room into a versatile dual-purpose space, ideal for summer living

total cost £927.97

W

hen Deborah Yates, 49, and her partner, James, moved into their two-bedroom terrace in southwest London, they knew the 1970s sunroom, tacked on to the back of the house, had the potential to be a real asset. ‘Although tired and neglected, it offered direct access to the garden and we thought it would make a great family space in summer, while also doubling as an occasional guest room and sleepover space for our teenage son, Callum,’ explains Deborah. A year later and with the room now buried beneath clutter, the couple were finally able to start work on it.

STEP ONE Although dated, the brick extension was structurally sound and dampfree, so the couple’s first task was to tackle the clutter. ‘Most of it ended up at our local tip and charity shops but, to save money, we did keep a sofa bed and chest of drawers,’ says Deborah. They then removed the old carpet and repaired a small but useful skylight. ‘Simply cleaning up the grime-covered glass instantly flooded the back of the room with light,’ smiles Deborah. Disappointed to

STEP TWO Keen to keep things fresh and bright, Deborah painted the room a crisp white. But a job she thought would take just a couple of days ended up turning into a bit of a marathon! ‘The previous owner was a smoker and every surface was badly stained with nicotine, so I had to apply a preparatory stain block prior to painting,’ recalls Deborah. Painting the beams also proved to be backbreaking work, but Deborah believes it was worth the effort. She was so pleased with the result, she persuaded James to paint the concrete to match. ‘We used a specialist floor paint and added a rug to soften the look, all for around £100,’ she smiles.

STEP THREE Externally, things proved a little easier. They tidied up the garden and jet-washed the existing paved area. ‘We were lucky enough to inherit some lovely plants, including a beautiful climbing rose, which

STEP FOUR The recycling continued inside, where the couple’s tatty and rather stained futon was refreshed with a new charcoal cover. ‘It was just too good to throw away as it turns into a really comfy guest bed,’ says Deborah. She spotted a handy dual-purpose blanket box at a local summer fair for £95 and found the smart shelving unit for £100 on Gumtree. ‘Anything we did decide to buy new, such as the armchair, lighting and rugs, was purposely chosen for use both inside and out, to ensure added flexibility,’ continues Deborah. And now that the sunroom is complete the family couldn’t be happier. ‘We love spending time in here now, especially on summer days when we can throw the doors wide open and enjoy the roses in bloom.’

GARDEN ROOM MAKEOVER

My colourful garden room cost next to nothing Leanne Baud pulled together a stylish look with second-hand steals, upcycled pieces and by rediscovering items she already owned

L

eanne Baud was instantly smitten when she walked into the sunroom of this extended 1930s house. With windows on three sides and an overhanging roof to create a veranda, Leanne loved its summery vibe. ‘The veranda reminded me of my mum’s former home in Spain,’ recalls Leanne, who lives here with her husband, Ash, their daughter, Esmé, one, and Leanne’s sons, Oliver, 14, and Mason, 12. ‘I could see us throwing open the doors, having the barbecue going and the sunroom becoming a lovely indoor-outdoor party space.’

total cost £1,380

STEP ONE The sunroom was crying out for a makeover as everything in it was brown, but the rest of the house needed decorating first. Initially, Leanne thought she’d make do by putting in a sofa, armchair and small dining table she’d had in her little two-bedroom cottage. ‘The comfortably worn leather sofa and armchair looked right for the relaxed nature of the room where the boys play computer games and we entertain friends,’ she says. ‘But the tiny table looked completely out of proportion! I bought a long wooden table with a matching bench because, although I didn’t know how I’d decorate the room at first, I knew wood would go with everything.’

The 10-seater pine table was the ideal investment piece for Leanne and Ash who love entertaining family and friends. The painted legs happen to be a good match for the walls, which are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe. Leanne’s upcycled two of the charity shop chairs in the same colour and waxed the third

She paid 25p for the vintage sheet music in a charity shop and framed it Leanne arranged a collection of artworks by balancing the frame colours with touches of yellow on each side. The butterfly is Leanne’s first attempt at ethical taxidermy, after being inspired by a follower on Instagram. existing décor but then Leanne gave birth to Esmé and went on maternity leave from her job as an emergency medical technician for the ambulance service. She decided it was time to transform the dull décor. ‘The brown was awful and everywhere – PVC window frames, window ledges, door frames, floor – and our leather sofa and armchair didn’t help,’ she says. ‘I particularly hated the brown window frames, so I painted them dark grey like the kitchen.’ Leanne, a keen Instagrammer (@paint_ paste_prosecco) was inspired by a follower. She sanded the frames, cleaned them with white spirit and had a primer tinted to match Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe. She applied two coats and then an eggshell topcoat in the same hue. As the work progressed, she decided to carry the same colour over the deep window ledges and onto the walls and skirting boards below. ‘I’d experimented with dark, dramatic tones in the rest of the house and grown to love Down Pipe,’ she explains. ‘It’s such a comforting colour and it’s made the sunroom look lovely and warm.’

STEP THREE After the main work was done, Leanne had no real plans, saying the room evolved through ‘instinct and impulse’. Although her love of upcycling also played a part. ‘We didn’t have much money growingup, but my mum had an eye for design,’ says Leanne. ‘She would make a few metres of sale fabric or paint stretch to make our home look lovely.’ Leanne was delighted to get her hands on a free piano she saw advertised on Facebook Marketplace and decorated it in Farrow & Ball’s Yellowcake, leftover from painting Esmé’s wardrobe. ‘Ash and the boys play instruments, but no one plays the piano, so Ash thought I was bonkers!’ says Leanne. ‘I love yellow and grey together and I thought a bold yellow piano would be a fun feature to brighten-up the room.’

STEP FOUR As well as using her DIY skills to add visual interest to the room, Leanne also made some practical pieces too, including a shelf from a scaffolding board she found in the garage. She also painted two charity shop chairs in Down Pipe and added new seat pads made from second-hand fabric. ‘Very little is new – I even bought the sofa and armchair from the previous owners of my old cottage,’ she says. The finished sunroom marks the end of Leanne and Ash’s renovation and is a room they’re very happy with. ‘In summer, we love leaving the doors open, both out to the deck and into the kitchen, so the breeze flows through the house,’ says Leanne. ‘At this time of year, the sunroom feels like more than one space, it’s easily my favourite room.’

Vintage touches give our modern garden room character Annie Tidyman used old floorboards in varying colours to turn her garden room into a quirky multi-use space

A

fter totally renovating their threebedroom, Victorian terrace house in London’s East End, Annie Tidyman and her husband, Rich Robinson, turned their attention to the garden. The couple had stretched themselves to buy the property in Clapton five years ago and had just about managed to complete the renovation work before sons, Cooper, three, and baby Woody came along. ‘We love what the house had become, but there was plenty of wasted

space in the garden,’ admits Annie, an artist specialising in pressed-flower designs (@columbia_road_press). ‘It’s a long, fairly narrow area and we never used the patio at the back, so we started obsessing about building a garden room.’ Annie and Rich, a music executive, wanted to use the space for a guest suite with a wet room and shower, but one that could also double as a home office for Annie and be a place where she could to do photoshoots.

measurements, the couple started looking at garden room designs in magazines and online. ‘We wanted something contemporary, with plenty of wood and big doors that we could open right out in summer.’ They were drawn to a company called CGM Trading and came up with a design that would give them one large open-plan room and a separate shower room. ‘We didn’t want three small rooms. To us, it made sense to have just the two.’ It was agreed to locate the garden room right at the back of the garden to minimise its impact and create a new paved area in front of it. ‘We already had the garden furniture stored away from our old house so we knew that would go with it.’

A funky wicker hanging chair gives the room wow-factor and a sheepskin cushion in pink brings in some pastel colour. The jungle wall chart adds further interest

weather, the build took four months and was finished in summer 2019. Annie and Rich were left with a timber-clad space that had unpainted walls, a wooden floor and an internal wall that gave them a long thin slice at the side for the shower room. Now it was time for Annie to bring in her flair for interiors and give the room character.

‘It was all looking a bit bland, so we had to think about how we could make it interesting and practical at the same time.’ The solution the couple came up with was to put vintage floorboards in varying colours and textures on the back wall and in the shower room. The rest of the walls were painted in a pale grey.

a top-quality sofa bed. ‘We didn’t want an actual bed in the room, but we were aware that, as people would be sleeping in there, it had to be comfortable. So, we did what everyone always suggests and went to see the sofa beds we liked. We sat on them, pulled out the mechanisms and laid on them to make sure.’ The couple splashed out a big chunk of their budget on a large sofa bed in a duck egg velvet. ‘The sofa bed also takes centre stage and you can see it from the house, so it was important to get it right.’ Annie had always wanted a 1960s-style, hanging wicker chair as well, so this was her opportunity. ‘I also thought it would be fun for guests.’

STEP FOUR Next, the couple concentrated on the shower room and, having decided on grey as the main colour for the scheme, had a stroke of luck and found a grey toilet and sink unit on eBay for a great price. ‘They were brand new, so obviously someone had changed their mind.’ The couple also chose tiles for the walls with a pop of pattern to tie them in with the scheme. ‘The way it was laid out, it made sense to put the shower in the middle, with the toilet at the back.’ With a new shelf up in the main room and a jungle wall hanging brightening up one of the other walls, Annie couldn’t wait to buy accessories and bring in bits and pieces she’d collected on travels to India and Morocco. ‘Now it’s got lamps, cushions and vases, and we love spending time in there.

Travel-inspired décor for GLOBAL GATHERERS Roam without leaving home by adapting these schemes influenced by far-flung destinations

Tropical desk fan in Raspberry Blue, £58, Red Candy Perfect pineapple mirror, £49, Audenza

Tropical Flamingo wall mural £34 per sq m, Wallsauce

Club tropicana Whether you’re inspired by the beaches of Tahiti or the biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest, carnival-esque colours, brushedgold accessories, velvet fabrics and exotic bird prints are the best ways to bring the tropical theme into your home. This scheme is both uplifting and relaxing, so bring in clashing colours and a mix of palm tree and pineapple prints to create a cheerful vibe. Mix these with plenty of soft textures and accessories, as well as comfy and contemporary furniture to give the room a chilled-out feel. The best thing about this interior is that you can be daring with colour and prints. Mix sunshine and mellow yellows to energise the space while also maintaining a calm, beachlike quality. You can blend these tones with bright splashes of green, pink and blue. For patterns, think large-scale palm and fern leaf prints in a variety of vibrant colours.

Take a walk on the wild side with this African safari-inspired scheme. Naturally, animal prints are a key element – an easy way to incorporate them into your interior is to treat them as neutrals, with sandy-toned leopard-print wallpaper and a few zebra-patterned cushions. This approach may seem as if you’re going against the grain of what these loud prints are all about, but it’s a brilliant way to bring animal prints into a room without having them overpower the rest of the scheme. It’s not all about big cats and zebras though. There are other animals that signal safari style too, such as giraffes and elephants. Introduce these creatures through lampshades, fabric, tableware, ornaments and cushions. Aside from patterns, other aspects of the African safari scheme that work well together are rattan furnishings and colours like burnt red, sandy yellow, grassland green and brushed gold.

Running along the Mediterranean coast, in the southeast corner of France, the French Riviera takes in the glamorous beaches of Saint-Tropez, the glitz of Cannes, the beauty of Nice and the spectacular harbours at Monaco. You can’t fail to be enchanted by the old-town boardwalks and boutique-crammed alleyway that weave inland from the crystal-clear waters of the Med. Elegance and luxury are signatures of the scheme, blended with rich, rustic design and a faded feel that comes from the salty sea breeze and the bright sunlight. The best way to achieve the look is to combine charming, unpretentious pieces with clean lines and light colours to keep the space feeling fresh and chic. Think white-washed walls and a few pastelcoloured accessories in sky blue, blush pink, weathered beige, sun-kissed yellow and hints of scarlet. Tie the scheme together with baskets, art, bedlinen and cushions that feature nautical stripes, sailinginspired motifs and washed-out French florals.

City life Top Tip

Who hasn’t watched Friends or Sex and the City and dreamed of living in New York? But just because you can’t share coffee with Rachel or cocktails with Carrie, doesn’t mean you can’t bring a bit of Brooklyn and Manhattan style into your home. The reason so many New York loft spaces look like old warehouses is because a lot of the city’s industrial units were adapted into apartments and studios during the 1960s. As such, these homes tend to feature high ceilings and large windows that flood the space with plenty of sunshine and street light. To mimic that look, keep your window furnishings minimal and using large industrial lamps. Spiral staircases and fire escape ladders are common in an urban setting, where as space is at a premium. If you want to reflect those elements in your scheme – without buying and fitting a new staircase – then use black metal shelves or lean a wooden ladder against the wall.

The industrial style can look cold, so inject warmth with a few pops of orange, yellow, pink and green. Use bold prints, abstract wall art, mismatched furniture, cosy throws and a comfy sofa.

Moroccan chic

Camo water hyacinth side table, £119, Beaumonde

Temara Moroccan solar lantern, £39.99, Lights4fun

All but touching Europe, Morocco is influenced by the mix of cultures that surrounds it, blending African, Arabian and Mediterranean styles. One aspect that’s typical of this style is Moorish architecture, and is perhaps best characterised by the distinctive keyhole shape of the horseshoe arches that feature so prominently. You can easily echo them by hanging a goldedged mirror that’s framed in this signature profile. In terms of patterns, these tend to be a busy mass of zellige geometrics – a form of traditional Arabic mosaic made from chiselled tiles that are set into plaster. The patterns made this way are intricate, elaborate and colourful. Wrought-iron scroll work, sculpted wood and terracotta tiles are also key characteristics of Moroccan style. While the furnishings are full of intricate detailing, the décor is laid-back. It’s all about creating a relaxed atmosphere with furniture that’s low to the ground – think relaxed daybeds, floor pouffes, vibrant rugs and simple tables.

Top Tip Create classic Moroccan mood lighting by layering table lamps, floor lanterns and pendants – look for designs with patterned metal, carved wood and coloured glass.

The Great Barrier Reef is a spectacular natural wonder of the world. It stretches across the north-east coast of Australia and is home to a diverse ecosystem of around 2,100 reefs and more than 1,600 species of fish. The deep blue-green waters that surround it are filled with an abundance of colour and every kind of coral and sea creature you can imagine, from clownfish and mimic octopus to sea urchins and star fish. If you want to recreate the tranquil tropics of the Great Barrier Reef in your home, it’s essential to replicate the colours of the ocean with an array of sea tones, including peacock, royal, pale and aqua blues alongside rich teal and algae green. Once you’ve chosen which ocean colours to use as your base, you can acknowledge the beautiful reefs with coral-coloured accents. A plain wash of white is another a great option that will keep this style feeling fresh – then you can bring in hints of blue and coral with your furnishings and accessories. Once you’ve got the palette sorted, it’s time to bring in the ocean-inspired motifs such as octopus, crab, coral, star fish and sea urchins, and a few natural textures through stoneware and woven jute.

MAKE BLOOMING MARVELLOUS

Floral displays Create impressive flower arrangements for every room in the house this summer

A

simple vase of flowers can give your home a cheerful atmosphere, especially in summer, when an abundance of blooms are in season. But choosing the best buds for your interior is just the beginning; to make your floral displays look elegant and effortless, you’ll also need to consider how to make those flowers work for each room. That’s why we’re here with fresh ideas to brighten every corner of your home – including expert advice from Jane Packer Flowers, the recently reissued book by the world-renowned florist. Whether you want to create a fancy centrepiece or bring the sweet fragrance of blossom into your hallway, you’ll be decorating your space with impressive arrangements in no time.

Hallway arrangements Entranceways are an often overlooked area of the home, but a floral display can change that. Provide a welcome sight for guests and family members alike with these tips from the legendary Jane Packer. ‘If your hallway is wide enough for a shelf or a narrow console table, this is the perfect platform for fresh flowers. A console can be adorned with an assortment of interesting vases in different colours, shapes and sizes. ‘A narrow, corridor-style hallway is often dominated by a large staircase at one end. It’s easy to complement this style of hall by placing a large vase of flowers at the foot of the stairs. Choose a tall, slender vase and fill it with structural flowers such as gladioli, arum lilies or delphiniums; elegant, tall-stemmed blooms that echo the strong verticals of the stairway.’

DECORATING IDEAS LIVING ROOM DISPLAYS Your living room is a prime spot for a bunch of flowers. Whatever the time of year or the size of the living room, the right blooms will allow your scheme to adapt to the seasons and add an uplifting vibe. While coffee tables are the most popular places for perennials, you shouldn’t neglect other areas of your living room. Mantelpieces, bookshelves and sideboards are crying out for a display of flowers. The living room is also a fun space to experiment with different types of arrangements; place a bottle-top vase with a single rosebud in it on a small side table, or spread a group of similarly coloured vases – each filled with one or two complementary stems – across a sideboard.

Bedroom blooms The scent of flowers is one of the delights of summer – so why not enjoy it from the moment you wake up? Combine feathery fern-like foliage with the fragrant petals of pink jasmine to add some natural glamour to a bedroom. Place an armful of roses on your dressing table for some romance, or a vase of budding muscari on your bedside table – you’ll see vibrant colour as soon as you open your eyes.

Your dining or living room table deserves a showstopping summer centrepiece. This is a classic composition of country garden favourites from Jane Packer Flowers includes scented delphiniums, stocks, peonies and roses – the flowers are held in position with florist foam

The kitchen may not be the most obvious place for flowers with it being such a practical space, but that doesn’t mean you can’t jazz it up with a simple display. Save the fancy blossoms for the dining room table centrepiece and follow the advice in Jane Packer Flowers on bringing blooms and foliage into the kitchen. ‘The best thing about flowers in the kitchen is that they can be relaxed and informal; this is not a traditional spot for floral displays, so no-one has high expectations. This allows you to play around with fruit and berries as well as flowers – think rosehips and chilli peppers, or a huge bowl of artichokes with their intriguing furry texture. If you have a garden, bring in flowers, foliage or blossom-strewn boughs.’

Sylish and actical

What’s best for your home: a classic bladed or modern bladeless fan? Here are the pros and cons of both…

Bladed Classic bladed fans work well at close range and blow air in a specific direction. They’re good for targeting the spot where you’re sitting, so they’re worth considering if you find yourself working from home.

Bladed fans are more affordable than the high-tech bladeless models and, generally speaking, are more portable as they’re smaller and lighter.

If you’re a light sleeper, then the noise from the whirring blades can be a problem when you’re trying to get some shut eye.

Another downfall of bladed fans is that the air temperature can’t be controlled and once they’re switched off the room won’t stay cool for long.

Bladeless To maintain a long-lasting, cool air temperature that can be adjusted easily and covers a wide area, then a bladeless fan is your best bet.

Bladeless fans are often quieter than classic bladed models, making them ideal for the bedroom. If the bedroom is where you plan on using it, look for a fan with a sleep timer so it won’t stay on all night.

With their contemporary designs, the sleek, bladeless tower fans don’t have much character compared to the retro charm of traditional bladed fans, even if they do keep more of the room cooler for longer.

Bladeless fans are usually more expensive. While you’re likely to get more cooling bang for your buck, be prepared for the higher prices on bladeless models.

Quiet and efficient

Light and Ptable

The AM06 Desk Fan has the signature Dyson ultra-modern design but this updated model has also been re-engineered to be quieter and more energy efficient that the previous version. Its bladeless, oscillating ‘air multiplier’ is 30cm wide and has 10 airspeed settings. It’s also remote controlled and has a sleep timer so you can nod off knowing it won’t stay on all night. Plus, no blades or grill means it’s safer than a conventional fan and much easier to clean.

Feature Sophie Demetriades

Smooth, quiet airflow

If you’re looking for a premium model with a design that’s as innovative as it is bold, then the Dyson AM07 tower fan is worth considering. It’s over a metre tall but its narrow shape makes it easy to tuck away into a corner. Doing away with blades not only eliminates any distracting whirring noise but also ensures a constant and smooth airflow. The AM07 has 10 speed settings and a sleep timer so you can set it to turn off after you’ve fallen asleep.

L

orna and James Nicks first moved into their two-bedroom home, a former rental property, back in 2012. It was decorated throughout in safe magnolia with a tiny bathroom that had seen better days. A cold enamel bathtub took up almost half of the room and a badly positioned soil pipe meant that the toilet sat 20cm away from the wall, leaving almost no floor space at all. Having made do while they renovated the rest of their home, by early 2020 the couple knew that it was time to refresh the bathroom. ‘It was cold and unwelcoming, and didn’t fit with the rest of the house,’ says Lorna. ‘With everything else finished, we set about planning and called on TLC Services, a local building firm, to help with the work.’ First on the agenda was ripping out the old tiles and replacing them with new designs. ‘The large-scale wall tiles were quick and easy to fit, even on our wonky old walls,’ explains

BATHROOM PROBLEM ROOM

a mini boutique hotel helped Lorna Nicks give her bijou bathroom a new sleek feel MAKE A PLAN By carefully choosing compact pieces that fit into the space, Lorna and James were able to open up the bathroom so it feels much larger than before

Lorna. ‘And the distressed floor tiles were the first thing I picked for the room, having fallen in love with the pattern after seeing them at a friend’s house.’ Next up, the enamel bath went in favour of a walk-in shower tray. ‘Taking away the bath opens up that half of the room and means we won’t have to wait for the tub to fill every time we want to get ready, saving us time and money,’ says Lorna. The couple chose a thermostatic shower and stylish Crittall-style shower screen as a sleek focal point and added a matt black wall-mounted radiator beside it to save space and add warmth. With the lack of space in mind, Lorna found a compact vanity-toilet unit that perfectly slotted into the corner of the room, providing a much-needed storage cupboard for essentials and a countertop beside the sink. The poorly positioned plumbing for the toilet was moved back inside the unit, which further opened up the space and kept everything neat. ‘We adore our new bathroom – it feels like we’re in a boutique hotel now, rather than a student house,’ says Lorna. ‘It also feels so much lighter and more open, and it’s so much easier to get ready for the day ahead. We love it!’

TILES

Strong shades and quirky patterns are this year’s surface showstoppers. Try them in your bathroom with these new takes on traditional tiling

M

etro, Moroccan, marble – classic tiles are here to stay, but not as we know them! Traditional tiles will give a bathroom longevity, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with them too. Cover walls and floors with familiar designs in new colours and fresh patterns for a forward-thinking scheme.

MODERN MOROCCAN

Patterned tiles like this monochrome design will make a real feature of the wall, especially if you’ve chosen plain floor tiles for contrast. They’re finished with a stainand water-resistant glaze for durability too

Moroccan-inspired décor has made its way into every part of our homes – think woven rugs, raffia textures and ornate lanterns – so it’s no surprise that this timeless style is a top choice for bathrooms too. Pick a graphic monochrome palette or a quirky scallop patchwork design, or create a statement focal point for a 2020 take on this classic look.

MOROCCA N BOHO

‘Metro remains the number one searched for keyword on our site and it’s hardly a surprise. When people hear metro, they tend to imagine the classic subway-style white rectangle, but there is so much more choice. With variations on colour, size and finish, designers and interior enthusiasts can really get creative. Our new Somerset range, for instance, has metro-inspired tiles in classic whites and greys, as well as pastel colours which enable you to create softened spaces. Lay them together in geometric patterns and they will make a striking feature – and you can be safe in the knowledge that no one else will have quite the same design as you!’

‘With a unique mix of colours and patterns, Moroccan-inspired tiles will bring a little boho magic to your home. They come into their own in transitional spaces, adding flare to rooms that can often be seen as dull or overlooked entirely. Moroccan tiles will add a stunning feature to a space in the form of a bathroom backsplash, or when placed around the edges of a room or entryway. To create an edgy mural look – tile up to a third of a wall with Moroccan or another type of patterned tile, then paint the top two thirds in a striking shade. This is so easy to do and really good for your budget as well, as you’re not tiling an entire wall.’

‘Marble still forms a big part of the tile market and is especially popular with those who want something classic but with a bit of personality. With a wide range of options on size and style, you can be confident that you will find something to match your distinct interior preference. Marble-look porcelain tiles can be found in gloss or matt finishes, which will enable you to create a natural stone-effect style. The variety of tones and textures available means that they easily co-ordinate with existing fittings and furnishings. They can be applied to walls and floors for a cohesive look, and can be matched with marble-look worktops and basins.’

Dark hues may not be the obvious choice for one of the smallest rooms in the house, but moody shades can bring depth and drama to even the most bijoux of bathrooms. Inky grey, blue and black tones will make any accessories you add really stand out, so pair a dusky palette with brass and gold fixtures, leafy accent plants, marble textures and ultra-fluffy towels for a luxe boutique-hotel vibe. Choose glossy tiles to bounce light around the room, and go for dark grouting for a sleek, co-ordinated finish.

Nothing makes a bathroom feel like a fancy spa quite like marble tiles! Synonymous with quality and luxury, marble’s timeless appeal makes it a staple of classic and contemporary schemes alike. And with marble-effect tiles looking just as chic as the real thing, it needn’t break the bank. For a fresh way to use them, go for jumbo-sized tiles (which will also create the illusion of space) or, at the other end of the scale, get inventive with smaller tiles in different shapes and patterns.

Can’t decide on just one tile shade? Use a few that work in harmony and try tonal colour-blocking. Experiment with ombré, mosaic, geometric, border, stripe, vertical or horizontal sections – anything goes! This trend is all about creating a look that’s uniquely yours, so draw out a few designs on a piece of paper to play with different patterns. Dot dark tiles among softer shades for striking contrast, use different tones of the same colour for a classic mosaic effect, or if you’re going for a palette of greys or neutrals, pick tiles that have a textured surface to add further interest.

Once the rug design is finished, trim the yarn lengths down. Holding a pair of long scissors horizontally, trim until you’re happy with it, but leave at least 2.5cm of yarn height. Using the marked outside line as the border, cut the canvas two squares outside of the border line all the way around. Fold the edge of the canvas over to the wrong side (WS) along the border line. Thread a darning needle with a length of Yarn C and whip stitch around the folded border. To finish, turn the mat over and use a hot glue gun on the WS to give the mat a non-slip back; outline the rectangle edge first and then fill in the shape with diagonal lines.

POMPOM PICNIC BLANKET

Stitch a fun blanket and bring good vibes to picnic time SHOPPING LIST Patterned cotton fabric, 137 x 137cm Plain cotton fabric, 137 x 137cm Pompom trim, 4.5m Yarn Yarn needle Pencil Twine Sewing machine Pins Sewing thread

Cut a circle from your patterned fabric. The easiest way is to find the centre of the fabric, tie a piece of twine to the pencil, then hold (or pin) the end of the twine at the centre of the fabric. Next, draw a circle onto the fabric with the pencil and cut out. You can then use this shape as a template for the plain fabric. Pencil on the words you want to embroider centrally on the right side (RS) of the patterned fabric. Thread a length of yarn through the needle and knot the two ends together, then bring it up from the wrong side (WS) at the start of the first letter. Following the pencil line, bring the needle back down, roughly 1cm away. Continue embroidering the lettering with a chain of split stitches. To create a split stitch, come up through the fabric about 1cm away from your first stitch. Insert the needle back down into the fabric in the middle of your first stitch, splitting the yarn, then pull the needle through. Once finished, place the fabric circles together with RS facing, pin around the outside and then sew, leaving a 7.5cm gap for turning. Turn the blanket RS out, then stitch the gap closed. Pin and sew the trim around the edge of the blanket.

couple of seen-better-days lampshades might not seem like the obvious choice for a statement light fitting, but all it takes is a few balls of yarn to transform them into a colour-block centrepiece. Just wrap the yarn around the shades in a stripe pattern for a colourful pendant that’s guaranteed to brighten the place up.

1

Place one lamp on top of the other, as shown, and, using a pencil and the main image as a guide, mark out sections for each stripe of colour. They don’t have to all be the same width. Write the initial of each yarn colour on the sections you want to wrap with it on both of the lampshades. Secure the end of the yarn for the first section in place using masking tape, leaving some excess yarn to tie off later. Wrap the first marked section by passing the yarn up through the lamp and around the outside. You may need to push the strands together as you’re wrapping to keep them tidy. When you get to the end of the section, tie on the next yarn colour on the inside of the lamp using a double knot, as shown. Use

Continue to wind the yarn around and up through the lamp to wrap each section, as before until the whole lamp is covered. The lengths of yarn should sit side by side and not overlap each other. You may find it helpful to hold the lampshade between your knees, passing the ball of yarn through from one hand to the other to speed up the wrapping process. When you get to the end of the wrapping process, remove the masking tape from the first strand of yarn and tie it to the end of the last strand of yarn. Use scissors to trim off any long tails from where you’ve knotted the yarns on the inside of the lamp.

4 5

6

Repeat these steps to wrap the second lampshade – you may want to evaluate the colour distribution now you’ve completed one. When you get to the end, remove the masking tape from the first strand of yarn and tie it to the end of the last strand of yarn. Use scissors to trim off any long tails from where you’ve knotted the yarns on the inside of the lamp. Once you’ve finished wrapping the second lamp, stack it on top of the first one. Use a craft knife to carefully cut a small slit into four sides of each lamp where they sit together, just above the wire frame. Pass a small piece of florist’s wire through each of the slits and pull tightly, then twist the ends together on the inside. To finish off, push the yarn over the wire to disguise it.

Weave an on-trend geometric cushion cover from

fabric strips

W

oven accessories are everywhere right now, including our own sofas! Nothing brings texture, colour and pattern to a scheme quite like a tactile woven piece, be it a wall hanging, basket or cushion like this one. Made from strips of fabric interlaced in a simple design, once you’ve mastered the technique you can get creative with different colours and weaving patterns. Pair with furniture in natural materials such as rattan and wicker – another of this year’s hot interiors trends – for a modern boho feel.

YOU WILL NEED 1m cream cotton fabric 50cm blue cotton fabric 25cm yellow cotton fabric Bias binding maker tool, 2.5cm 15m hemming tape, 2cm wide 25cm doublesided lightweight interfacing Rotary cutter Cutting mat Tailor’s chalk Matching sewing thread Sewing machine Sewing needle Scissors 40 x 40cm cushion pad

1

Start by cutting the strips of fabric. Each strip needs to be 4.8cm x roughly 50cm. You’ll need five mustard strips, 10 blue strips and 15 cream strips. Lay out the first fabric, measure and mark the strips, then cut along the marked lines with the rotary cutter and cutting mat. You can cut the strips straight rather than on the bias as they don’t need to be flexible. Following the instructions on the binding tool, feed the first strip through the tool, ironing it as you pull it through to press the edges. Repeat this for each of the fabric strips. Add hemming tape to make the folded edges of the binding more secure. Cut a 50cm strip of hemming tape and slip this inside one of the binding strips, under the folded edges. Press along the edges, being careful not to iron in the gap between the edges as the hemming tape will stick to the iron. Repeat this process for each of the fabric strips.

To assemble the woven panel, cut a 45 x 45cm square of blue fabric and a 45 x 45cm square of double-sided interfacing. Lay out the fabric square with the interfacing on top. Lay a cream strip vertically on top, right side (RS) up and 2.5cm in from the left-hand edge. Pin in place at the bottom, then lay another cream strip next to it with no gap in between, and pin in the same way. Continue to pin all 15 strips. Referring to the main image, weave the coloured strips through the cream strips, again, RS up. Make sure the first strip is 2.5cm up from the bottom and at 90° to the cream strips. Once the woven pattern is complete, press the panel with a hot iron to activate the interfacing. Turn the panel over and press the back to make sure the interfacing is securely fixed to the fabric. Trim the panel 1.5cm from the last strip along each edge. From the remaining cream fabric, cut two 32 x 42cm rectangles to make

5 6

the back of the cushion cover. Fold one of the longer edges of one of the rectangles to the wrong side by 1cm, then again by 1cm, before pinning it in place. Repeat along one long edge of the other rectangle, then sew along the folded edges. Lay the woven panel RS up, making sure the yellow and blue strips are vertical. Lay one of the cream rectangles on top so the raw edges line up 1cm from the last strip on the edges of the panel. Lay the other rectangle on top, lining up with the other side of the panel in the same way – the hemmed edges should overlap. Pin and sew around the edge of the cushion cover, 1.2cm in – this should catch the edges of the outer strips, holding them down neatly. Trim the seams to 0.5cm, trim across the corners, then over-sew all the way around with a zigzag stitch. Turn the cover RS out and fill with a cushion pad.

Mark out and cut two 1m lengths to use as the upright sides of your bookshelf. We used a chop saw for accuracy and a neat cut, but this could be done by hand, or you could ask staff at the timber yard where you’re buying the wood to cut it for you. Measure the shelves Use a tape measure on one of the uprights to mark the intervals where you want your shelves to go. Measure the height of your largest book – if it’s 290mm, for example, make the gaps between your shelves 300mm for clearance. Measure the thickness of your shelves (we suggest using 25mm-thick wood) and use your set square to mark where each of the shelves will go. Transfer these lines onto the other upright. S rong joints Now make the dado joints. These are really strong woodworking joints made by creating a channel cut across the grain of one piece of wood (the upright) that a second piece (the shelf) slots into. Take time to make these accurate, so that each shelf piece fits nice and tight. Lay your set square on the lines you just marked and score along them with a Stanley knife or similar implement. The knife mark should help you create a more accurate cut with the saw. Mark the shelf de th Draw two lines 10mm deep on the side of the upright to

2

3

4

show the depth of each shelf slot. Do this on both uprights. Using your handsaw, cut along the lines until you reach the 10mm depth marks. Channel chiselling Take your chisel and make small notches inside the two lines you just sawed along. With the bevel of your chisel facing up, start chiselling between these notches. Once the channel is chiselled out, flip your chisel over so the bevel is down and clean out the channel – using the chisel bevel-edge down will prevent chiselling too deep into your wood. When you’ve finished making the dado cuts on both of your uprights, grab your shelf pieces and push everything together to test the fit. Make adjustments where needed, until everything fits tightly. Mark screw holes Carefully take everything apart and lay your two uprights down. Draw a line in the middle of each dado cut on the outside of the uprights, then mark where you’re going to drill your holes. We made two holes about 45mm in from either edge. D ill and secure Begin by using the 8mm drill bit. Wrap masking tape around the drill bit at about 5mm from the tip, to give you an accurate guide. Drill holes at the points you marked in step 6, stopping when you reach the masking tape. Then change to a smaller 3mm drill bit and drill right through the uprights into

5

the slots where the shelves will go. Screw and glue all the shelves into one upright, then do the same on the other side. Add dowels For a neat look, add dowels to all your screw holes. Just pop a little glue in each hole and push or lightly hammer the dowels into the holes, then cut them flush with a handsaw. If there’s any of the dowel left hanging out after cutting, you can grab a sharp chisel and, keeping it nice and flat against the side, push it across the dowel to shave off thin amounts. This is called ‘paring’. Top shelf Measure the top of the bookshelf, then using your remaining piece of timber, mark out the length to cut. We added a little overhang on either side of the top to keep the top and bottom of the unit balanced. Secure the top Place the cut top piece where you want it to go and mark where you need to add screws. Use the same drilling technique in Step 7 to drill holes and screw the top on. You can add dowels as you did before. Sand and finish Sand down the whole bookshelf unit to make sure it’s smooth and snag-free. You can paint yours if you like but we decided to give our bookshelf a coat of Danish oil to really make the wood grain stand out. Just follow the steps on the back of the tin to ensure you get the best results.

We answer your DIY and maintenance questions with a little help from the experts

Q

I want to re-decorate my kitchen and I’d like to use a strong colour for the units but I’m worried it might date quickly. What do you suggest? Elizabeth Craig, Basingstoke

A

Feature Alison Davidson

Hayley Simmons, Head of Merchandising for Magnet, has this advice… Choosing a décor scheme for a kitchen that’s practical and stylish but will also stand the test of time is tricky as it’s important to create a space that you’ll love for years to come. Therefore, the main piece of advice I’d give when it comes to incorporating colour in a new kitchen, is to look for something that’s personal and perhaps even emotive to you. Don’t be too led by trends as sometimes it can be hard to tell what will

stick around and what won’t. Do plenty of research and pick a colour that suits your personal tastes, fits in with the rest of your home and works well for your lifestyle. We introduced the ‘Magnet Create’ range for customers just like you. It allows you to design a kitchen with the colours of your choice, whether it’s an allover shade you want or just an accent. The 20 hues in the range have been carefully curated to stand the test of time. As well as the dark and moody hues of the moment, the range also features softer, subtle shades that are a little bit different – you could combine them for a striking contrast (see below). Choose a colour not just for how it looks, but for how it makes you feel. Colour can evoke memories, moods and even tastes or smells. Keep this in mind to help you design a kitchen that’s unique and one that you’ll never grow tired of.

Q

I want to re-paint my bedroom but I have asthma. Is there a paint that won’t aggravate my condition? Helena Thompson, Coventry

A

Cathryn Helsby, Marketing Manager at Earthborn, says… Yes there is: Earthborn’s ecofriendly Claypaint. We’ve carefully selected the ingredients to avoid using any known allergens. Many allergy and asthma sufferers tell us they notice the difference when applying Claypaint and living with it afterwards. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the breathability of Claypaint, in particular its moisture-absorbing qualities, helps to even out the humidity in a room. This results in a healthier, more comfortable living environment for everyone. Secondly, the clay in Claypaint emits negative ions. Q

I love my garden but I dread having to deal with the weeds. It’s a constant battle and stops me from relaxing. What can I do? Mary Smallwood, Bishops Stortford

A

Georgina Taylor, Trade Marketing Manager of Fiskars, suggests… Weeds can be a real pain no matter what size your garden is. The first thing to remember when tackling them is that you need to remove the whole weed, not just the visible part above the ground, as even a tiny part of the root can regrow. If you have lots of weeds to remove, it’s best to wait until after its rained as the ground will be softer, allowing you to remove the weeds more easily. Having the right tools also helps. Fiskars Xact Weed Puller removes weeds by their roots and saves you from having to use chemicals or weed killers, so it’s better for the environment. Its long handle also means you don’t have to bend down to tackle them. The most important thing to remember is that the sooner you tackle weeds, the less time they have to bed in and expand their roots. Xact Weed Puller, £29.40, Fiskars

Jo Naughton, Co-founder and PR Director, Lights4fun says… If you don’t have an outdoor socket in your garden, solar-powered lights are the way to go. Nobody wants trailing wires or to have to plug lights in through open windows. Solar-powered lights work best during the summer, when the days are longer and brighter but they’ll work well all year round. Most solar-powered lights have integral timers to save battery life, but it also means you don’t need to remember to switch them off.

Q

I have a recurring problem with a blocked sink in the kitchen. What can I do to stop it happening? Megan Berry, Monmouth

A

Neil Daly, Category Director for Building and Technical at B&Q, has these solutions… If your kitchen sink is slow to drain or stops draining completely, there’s probably a blockage somewhere in your waste pipe. A common cause is grease in the trap. If the water doesn’t drain at all, then you’ve got a complete blockage, which means there’s an obstruction in the waste pipe. There are a number of ways you can sort this out: Method 1 If your sink is completely blocked, partially fill it with water and place the rubber cup of a sink plunger over the plug-hole. Stuff a damp cloth into the overflow pipe outside to prevent any loss of pressure. Then pump the plunger up and down vigorously. Take the

You can set a time for when you want them to switch off and on, or you can also just let them come on when it gets dark. When you first buy your lights, switch them on and leave them outside to charge before putting them in their final position. When you place them, make sure you position the battery panel so it gets as much sunlight as possible – it’s best not to hide it under plants as it won’t work as effectively. If the lights don’t come on, it probably means the supplied rechargeable battery needs replacing. The best way to check is to open the back of the solar panel, take out the supplied battery and replace it with an ordinary one. Place the solar panel face down on a surface to simulate darkness and if the lights illuminate, you’ve found your problem. Solar-powered lights are easy to maintain – you just have make sure the panel is clean, with no

plunger away and see if the water will drain. You may need to repeat this a few times. Method 2 If that fails, try using a chemical drain-cleaning product. HG Duo Unblocker works well but remember to wear protective gloves and goggles when you use it, and make sure you follow the instructions carefully as this cleaner is toxic. Don’t use it around other chemicals such as bleach, as doing so could release dangerous gases. It’s also a good idea to spread some petroleum jelly around the plug-hole to protect it from damage. Method 3 If the blockage still hasn’t cleared, you’ll have to remove the waste trap under the sink. Put a bucket under it to catch any spillage, then unscrew the trap and empty the contents into the bucket. If you don’t find a blockage in the waste trap, use a drain auger to probe further into the waste pipe, pushing it down through the pipe towards the overflow outside. Once you’ve cleared the problem, clean the trap and put it back together, making sure you replace any washers or O-rings. But don't over-tighten it as it maybe difficult to undo later on.

soil particles or water residue. You can wipe solar panels down with a damp cloth. There are lots of choices available – as well as fairy lights, you can also buy solarpowered festoons, deck lights, wall lights, lanterns and water features.

Inject some eco-friendly evening atmosphere into your garden with a set of solar-powered lights

My home décor is my favourite pastime Vikki Savage spends her spare time doing-up her 1930s house, updating it with the hottest interior trends, clever upcycling projects and style-savvy ideas

W

hen Vikki Savage wants to switch off and relax, she picks up a paintbrush and starts decorating! ‘All my spare time is spent painting rooms, upcycling furniture or thinking about interiors,’ she says. ‘It starts whenever I buy a piece of second-hand furniture and then, before I know it, I’ve painted the walls a different shade to match my new find.’ When Vikki and her husband Will bought their three-bedroom semi around six years ago, it was in dire need of love and attention. Every

inch of their new home was covered in layers of cream paint. Vikki particularly remembers the fussy curtains that blocked out precious daylight, but all of the original features had either been removed or boarded up. They also had to fix lots of botched DIY jobs, including holes that had been stuffed with newspaper and then painted over. Despite its flaws, Vikki loved the house instantly. ‘As soon as I walked in, I knew this was the one. We loved the proportions of the rooms and the layout. Although the

COME ON IN…

WE ARE Vikki Savage (@little_savage_life), 34, and her husband Will, 41. We both work for the NHS, and have two children: Findlay, four, and Alice, two.

OUR HOME IS A 1930s three-bedroomed semi-detached property on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

MY BEST BARGAIN The set of dining chairs I got for free and then painted black.

MY ADVICE IS Buy things for your home that you truly love, not because they match your décor choices. FIRST FLOOR Kitchen

place looked a little tired around the edges, I could see beyond the dated décor,’ she says. Previously, the couple had been renting a citycentre apartment that they couldn’t decorate. When they bought their first home together, they were eager and excited to add some personality to the place. Within a year of moving in, Vikki was pregnant with their first child, Findlay, so they had to forge ahead with their decorating plans to make the home ready for their new arrival. ‘We tore down the curtains and had shutters installed for a cleaner look. They were the first big purchase for our home,’ says Vikki. ‘We concentrated on the downstairs rooms and then moved upstairs to start on the bedrooms and nursery.’

As the couple had no DIY experience, Vikki’s father was on call to help out. ‘One day, Dad and I took a hammer to the dining room chimney breast. We revealed the brick fireplace, which had been boarded up with chipboard. We ripped up the carpet in what later became Alice’s bedroom and discovered a pretty, yellow-tiled hearth,’ she says. ‘Will was never sure what project he might come home to find me taking on. I could be up a ladder painting, on the floor ripping carpets up or knocking holes in the walls.’ Vikki admits that her first attempts at creating schemes for the rooms resulted in a few horror stories. ‘I can’t believe that I filled the living room with purple accessories. It was horrible!’ She also painted the kitchen walls a sky-blue shade, which she detested immediately because it clashed with the cupboards. ‘I’ve decorated most rooms about three times since moving in. It’s only now that I’m finally happy. It’s taken time to work out what colours work in this house and find my own sense of style.’

Although their new home was structurally sound, the bathroom was in need of attention. It was a separate toilet and washroom, which they knocked through to make one large family bathroom. ‘We struggled to find a company that would do what we wanted. Lots of firms had preconceived ideas of the design and layout. In the end, we hired a local plumber who was more open to our ideas.’ Other areas of Vikki’s home have been given short-term fixes. One day, they plan to open up the back of the house and knock through from the kitchen into the dining room. Not wanting to waste good money on

‘We love the original stainedglass in our front door as it casts colour into the hallway on a sunny day.’ This welcoming entrance includes a small telephone table that Vikki snapped up for £25, a black banister and panelling on the walls To make all her junk shop finds match, Vikki painted them all in the same shade: Gentlemen’s Club by Frenchic Paint. updating her kitchen, Vikki has given it a temporary makeover. ‘We bought a new oven and taps, but kept the worktop and units, and I painted the walls to freshen up the space,’ she says. ‘The wall cabinets overcrowded the room and Will kept hitting his head on them. We took them down and replaced them with shelves made from scaffolding boards.’ When the couple’s second child, Alice, grew out of her cot it was the perfect time for Vikki to give her daughter’s room a makeover. ‘There used to be a double bed in there, but we got rid of that to turn it into a proper bedroom for Alice,’ she says. With her craft and now-impressive DIY skills, Vikki did everything herself in the room – the grideffect wall, the wooden house, the floral wallpaper and the cute canopy are all her own handiwork. As her home style has evolved over time, Vikki has grown more confident taking risks with her interior decisions. ‘If I see a design idea that I love but can’t afford, I work out a way to make it myself. I get a real enjoyment out of upcycling and painting. But I have to be careful because, before I know it, I’ve accidentally redecorated a whole room.’

The country look made my house a home

The Victorian property’s rustic charm was a big draw for Pauline

Creativity and a love of all things rustic helped Pauline Fox turn a jaded property into her own country idyll

A

move from London to the countryside was little more than an idea at the back of Pauline Fox’s mind, until she visited a spot in rural Essex and just fell in love with it. ‘I’d always thought I’d move at some point, but it all happened really quickly,’ she says. ‘My own house wasn’t even on the market. I looked around the village and before I knew it, I’d made an offer on a property.’

The home that proved irresistible to Pauline was part of a large Victorian vicarage that had been converted into several residences. The one that caught her eye had its own small garden as well as access to spacious communal grounds. ‘There weren’t many options in my price range and this was such an unusual place,’ she says. ‘A period property was a must for me and here was a share of a beautiful old building in a lovely, quiet setting.’

Pauline’s pale neutrals boost light and give the sitting room a sense of calm. She painted the walls in Pale Dove Grey emulsion from Laura Ashley, adding shades of pink and layers of texture for interest. The large sideboard and coffee table are both old, upcycled pieces

WE ARE Pauline Fox, 53, a retail manager and crafter (@betsyblairhome) and my grown-up children, Emily 26 and Tom, 23.

OUR HOME is a three-bedroomed wing of a converted Victorian vicarage near Saffron Walden, Essex.

MY FAVOURITE ITEM Is my Smeg fridge, which came from our old home. It’s in keeping with the country look.

I’D LOVE TO CHANGE The modern internal doors for old, reclaimed ones. At some point I’ll put some glass into the front door too, to spread the sunlight around a bit.

‘I primed the kitchen cupboards and tiles, painted everything and then crossed my fingers. Amazingly it’s all stood up really well and is such an improvement’ The interior was sound and had the space that Pauline and her two grown-up children, Tom and Emily, needed. But as much as she loved the cottage character of the bedrooms and the sitting room’s big windows, high ceiling and wooden floor, the house’s décor was far from ideal. There were glossy black kitchen cabinets and old-fashioned striped wallpapers, while the purple and mauve colour schemes were a long way from Pauline’s taste. ‘I’m a massive fan of pretty pastels and the modern country look, and I love combining it with Scandi,

French and handmade elements too,’ she says. ‘The rooms seemed dark, cold and unloved. It bothers me when my home doesn’t feel right and I knew I’d be redecorating right through the property.’ Pauline started to make changes as soon as she moved in. No structural work was required, but with the help of her son and daughter, she painted the walls throughout. She opted for shades of off-white and pale grey to maximise light while still keeping a feeling of warmth. Upstairs, she used wallpaper sparingly to add subtle pattern

and softness to each of the bedrooms. Downstairs, she created a focal point for the sitting room by swapping the unappealing electric fire for a more traditional stove, with a white stone surround. The kitchen was Pauline’s biggest challenge. Although it was spacious and well-appointed, the dark floor, modern, high-shine cabinets and peach tiles jarred with Pauline’s love of soft, muted tones and textures. ‘I’d love to have replaced everything,’ she says. ‘My dream would be a neutral, painted wooden kitchen, pale

For example, the bedroom ceilings were too low for her existing wardrobes and only self-assembly furniture could squeeze up the narrow stairs. ‘This house is a bit smaller than

my old one, so I needed different pieces,’ she says. ‘I’m always on the lookout for interesting bargains and I’ve picked up lots of things over the years from charity shops, eBay and house clearances.’ Pauline checked out local markets and other useful sources in the area. With her keen eye, she added to her existing furniture and built a modern rustic look without breaking the bank. Her timeless, practical high street buys are mixed in with vintage finds and country-inspired one-offs. She has also refurbished various pieces herself, including the sitting room’s large decorative sideboard and the hall’s pretty, painted console table. ‘I’ve always enjoyed being creative and paint is definitely my friend,’ she says. ‘I’ve used it to update everything from small items, such as picture frames and chairs, all the way through to quite large pieces of furniture.’ Fabrics are the second key component of Pauline’s country look. She makes her own cushions, bunting and lampshades from faded florals and linens. Dainty printed cotton swatches have been framed to add colour on the walls and flower-filled jam-jars trimmed with scraps of ribbon and lace dot the surfaces. ‘It’s been quite tough bringing this property back to life,’ she says. ‘At times I wasn’t too sure how it was going to turn out, but it certainly feels like home now.’

In 2015, the couple arrived to visit Brett’s parents, who were enjoying a break in one of the traditional wooden beach huts, clustered between a freshwater lake and the shore. ‘It’s an incredibly peaceful place, with real charm,’ says Susan. ‘When we spotted one of the huts for sale on the site, Brett and I just couldn’t say ‘no’. She spent hours perfecting the plans for the layout in order to get the most from every inch. ‘The idea was to fit a boutique apartment into a beach hut without losing the character,’ she says. ‘It had to have a king-size bed, a standard dishwasher and a proper walk-in shower.’ Her ingenious design includes a wellequipped kitchen, fully-fitted shower room and comfortable living space, yet feels anything but cramped. ‘I spent weeks researching online, looking at caravans and yachts for ideas, and working out the dimensions and positions of things,’ she says. ‘I didn’t want to waste any space.’

‘I spent weeks researching online, looking at caravans and yachts for ideas, and working out the dimensions and positions of things’ As a nod to their coastal location, Susan upcycled plain cork coasters with leftover paint and offcuts from navigational maps. The soft colours echo the beach hut’s blue and green highlights

Brett and Susan painted the bed and built a frame, so it could be screened with simple white curtains that Susan found at Next. The beaded panel (the Dew Drop curtain from Curtains Direct 2U is similar) lets light through and adds a splash of texture and colour

Prints by artist Janet Bell inspired the beach hut’s fresh green, blue and violet accents. Susan revamped a handy extending table that belonged to her uncle, and painted some folding chairs passed on by a friend, to make the breakfast area

The spacious feel is down to clever choices, such as underfloor heating to keep the walls clear of protruding heaters, neat bathroom fixtures, storage that’s hidden under the bed and unobtrusive curtains to screen off the comfy sleeping area from the living zone. ‘Two sofas would have been ideal, but I just went for one, plus an armchair, which gives us more room to move around,’ says Susan. ‘I chose compact kitchen units and a folding breakfast table and chairs for inside, as we’ve made the most of outdoors with lovely dining furniture and lots of seating.’ A stylish, interesting look was as important to Susan as practicality and comfort. The walls and ceiling were all painted white to create a fresh, open vibe and maximise the feeling of light and space. Taking inspiration from the palettes of some of her favourite artworks, she has layered on vibrant turquoise blues, fresh greens and vivid pinks. ‘There are English seaside and American beach-y elements, as well as urban industrial touches such as the metal pendant lights and modern

The pendant lampshade over the seating area was rescued from a barn and re-painted. Although the bed wasn’t that expensive, they invested in a comfortable, high-quality mattress, so it feels luxurious. The made-tomeasure window shutters were a worthwhile investment, as nothing else would have produced quite the right look. Susan and Brett thoroughly enjoyed the process of renovating their beach hut and now spend as much time there as they can. They also rent it out to guests (dunsterbeachhut. com). ‘It’s just a real escape,’ says Susan. ‘Life around here is quiet and simple, because there’s just the beach and the lake. But we’ve got every comfort and convenience too, so it’s the best of all worlds.’

3 ways with… Chickpeas Make the most of this versatile store cupboard essential 4 Make your own hummus. Rinse a 400g tin of chickpeas and tip them into a food processor with 4 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil and blitz until smooth. Add 2 cloves of garlic, 4 tbsp tahini, the juice of ½ lemon and ½ tsp ground cumin, and blitz again for about 5 minutes until smooth. Add about 30ml of water if it’s too thick then season to taste. 4 Chickpeas are also a delicious base for a veggie burger. Combine a 400g tin of chickpeas, a 200g tin of sweetcorn (both drained) and 150g roasted red pepper in a food processor and pulse. Add 1 tsp paprika, ½ tsp ground coriander, ½ tsp ground cumin, 3 tbsp flour and seasoning, then pulse again, ensuring that some texture is retained. Divide the mixture into four patties and fry them with a generous amount of oil until golden, turning halfway. Serve in a burger bun with accompaniments of choice. 4 For a simple chickpea curry, heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and fry 1 chopped red onion, 3 sliced garlic cloves, 1 inch freshly grated ginger, 2 tsp garam masala and ½ tsp each of turmeric, ground coriander and chilli powder. Allow to cook for 1 minute then pour in a 400g tin of chopped tomatoes and 400g tin of coconut milk. Bring it to the boil then simmer until it’s reduced slightly. Pour in 2 tins of chickpeas and a bag of spinach and cook for 5 minutes. Season and sprinkle over some fresh coriander before serving.

Q Whisk in the vinegar, cornflour and vanilla extract, then pour the mixture onto the baking paper but keep it within the circle you drew earlier. Q Spread the mixture out using a palette knife and create a dip in the centre. Make sure the sides are slightly higher than the middle, then transfer it onto a tray and bake in the oven for 60 minutes. Q Turn off the heat and allow the meringue to completely cool in the oven. ENJOY THE GOOD LIFE BY GOING OFF-GRID Switching to renewable energy sources to power your home will benefit the environment and reduce your running costs

Feature Andrea Dean

L

iving off-grid is a dream for many people. It means not being connected to the mains for your gas, electricity and water supplies, so you have to produce your own heating and power, and find a water source. Although being completely self-sufficient is a major lifestyle choice and generally only practical in remote locations, you can reduce your reliance on utility companies by generating energy from natural resources, such as the sun and wind. It’ll save you money and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. But to make the best possible use of it you’ll need to upgrade your home’s insulation and find ways to use your energy as efficiently as possible. Here’s how to get started…

According to the Energy Saving Trust, installing a domestic solar panel system costs £4,800 on average, and will save you up to £390 per year

96

yourhomestyle.uk

LOOK TO THE SUN

1

Photovoltaic cells, or solar panels, are installed on your roof to capture energy from sunshine and convert it into electricity. They work best in strong sunlight so the ideal site for them is a southfacing, unshaded roof at a 30-40° pitch, though east- or west-facing roofs are suitable too. You’ll need an inverter to adjust the current for domestic use and a battery for storage, but you can earn money on any surplus electricity you generate and export it to the National Grid via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Solar panels won’t provide all of your home’s power, however, so combine them with another renewable source or invest in a generator if there’s no mains supply.

This stunning home features natural materials throughout and a biomass wood-burner in the open-plan living room

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Worcester-Bosch’s Greenskies solar thermal panels can produce around 60 per cent of a home’s hot water

If you’re after a home with renewable technology already installed, consider East Craigiecatt, outside Aberdeen. Triple glazed and highly insulated, it comes with solar panels, a wind turbine and over 14 acres of land. Find out more at galbraithgroup.com.

AIR SUPPORT

GOING UNDERGROUND

FUEL UP

A single wind turbine can produce the bulk of a home’s electricity. That said, it’s only really a practical option if you live in a location that’s exposed and breezy, such as on the side or brow of a hill, where the average wind speed is at least five metres per second. Small 1-2 kilowatt (kW) turbines can be mounted on the roof of your house or an outbuilding and, in many cases, won’t require planning permission, though consent will be needed for a more powerful free-standing turbine. As with solar panels, you’ll also need an inverter and a battery to store electricity for use when there’s no wind. It’s also worth looking into SEG payments for supplying any excess energy you generate to the National Grid.

Ground-source heat pumps use energy stored in the ground to heat water, radiators and underfloor systems. The heat is extracted through buried pipes or boreholes and installation should be carried out as part of a renovation rather than as a retrofit, as it’s messy and involves digging up the ground. The pump itself is installed indoors and should take up no more room than a conventional boiler. Air-source heat pumps are easier to fit and absorb warmth from outside air, which passes through a compressor to heat your home and the water you use. Both types of heat pump require a source of electricity and can provide income through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

A biomass system burns logs, wood chips or pellets to heat individual rooms or the entire house, depending on whether you opt for a stove or a boiler. Biomass is a sensible choice for a larger property where there’s plenty of space to store the fuel, particularly if there’s a ready supply of seasoned wood nearby. However, a pellet boiler is easier and more clean to use than one powered by logs. A wood-burning stove can be fitted with a back boiler for water heating, though you’ll need an additional heat source for the rest of your home. Both biomass boilers and pellet stoves with integrated boilers may qualify for RHI payments, provided the wood you use is sustainable and comes from an approved supplier.

An air-source heat pump is similar in size to an air-conditioning unit and should be fitted to an external wall with space around it to ensure good air flow

3

The Vitovalor fuel-cell heating system, from Veissman, provides heat, hot water and free electricity by making its own hydrogen, all within a small domestic unit. It results in 40 per cent less gas consumption

4

Ground-source heat pumps extract warmth from the ground through pipes laid in trenches. The owners of this field in Powys installed a Kensa pump to heat their home. The land is now covered and grazed by sheep

HOME IMPROVEMENT

If you have the space, it’s worth investing in a greenhouse to grow your own produce. ‘Even the smallest, unheated structure will allow you to extend the seasons and produce good crops,’ says Tom Hall, of greenhouse manufacturer Alitex

WATER WARMING

Photo sheds.co.uk

5

Just like solar panels, solar thermal heating utilises the Sun’s rays. But instead of converting sunlight into electricity, solar thermal heating systems use it to warm water for domestic use. You’ll need a boiler or immersion heater as back up, but beware: some solar thermal heating systems aren’t compatible with combination boilers that don’t have a storage tank. For maximum efficiency, the systems should be mounted on a roof in a sunny spot, facing as close to due south as possible. There are two types: flat plates, which are cheaper, and the marginally more efficient evacuated-tube systems. Planning consent is not usually required and these systems are eligible for RHI support.

This 1,500kW turbine in Norfolk produces enough electricity to power about 1,000 homes. A smaller 2.5kW turbine can provide most of a home’s electricity, will cost around £10,000 and should last for over 20 years

EXPERT ADVICE ‘Energy efficiency is growing in popularity and if you’re thinking about installing some form of renewable energy generation at your new property, it’s prudent to seek professional advice. Also, if you want to try to be more selfsufficient, but have no experience, you can dip your toe in the water by buying a few hens, digging a vegetable plot and planting some fruit trees and bushes.’ Emma Chalmers, partner at Galbraith property consultancy

GROW YOUR OWN

6

The challenges of shopping for food during the coronavirus pandemic have sparked a renewed interest in home-grown fruit and veg. As well as reducing your impact on the environment, in terms of packaging and food miles, growing your own food is a great way to increase your self-sufficiency. People across the country have been filling plots with all sorts of produce for years, but since the lockdown began, sales of fruit and veg seeds have sky-rocketed. Don’t let a tiny garden or the lack of an outside space deter you, as tomatoes, salad leaves, beans, strawberries and of course, herbs can be grown in pots or window boxes. Alternatively, why not add your name to the waiting list for an allotment?

Having painstakingly restored the farmhouse, Mary’s hoping to sell it to someone who loves it as much as she does This former ‘wreck’ is now a stunning and self-sufficient home with views over the Northumbrian countryside

Feature Andrea Dean

An inglenook fireplace housing a stove and back boiler is the focal point in the spacious, character-filled sitting room

Tucked away on a Northumbrian hillside, High Tipalt was built in the 1850s and incorporates stone that was once part of nearby Hadrian’s Wall. But despite is age, it’s a thoroughly modern off-grid property, as it runs almost entirely on renewable energy systems installed by owner Mary Almond. ‘In 2004 we bought a nearby farm along with High Tipalt – a dilapidated wreck that was hidden beneath a foot of poultry dung and had no services at all,’ she remembers. ‘As it’s inside the Northumbrian National Park we had to get planning permission

for the renovation work, but were only allowed to turn it into a holiday cottage, so it couldn’t be used as a permanent home, Mary explains. ‘We started by putting in a road up to the building, so that the builders could access it, then laid an underground water pipe to the bore hole at our farm. We also installed a wind turbine that provides 90 per cent of the electricity and any excess gets stored in a battery. We can’t export it back to the grid as we’re not on it so when it’s full, the surplus gets dumped into two heaters. We have a generator for the times when there’s been no wind for a few days and it kicks in automatically if we use too much electricity at once.’ Another renewable technology is found in the sitting room, where a log burner in the inglenook fireplace conceals a back boiler that provides hot water. The house’s only concession to gas is a bottle used for cooking, as an electric oven would drain too much electricity. The beautifully restored farmhouse is cool in the summer, toasty in the winter and boasts nearly 25 acres of land, three bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, exposed stonework, stunning countryside views and now has permission for full-time occupation. ‘It’s easy and cheap to run,’ says Mary. ‘And although it feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, it’s only a short drive from a village and not far from the A69, a main road.’ High Tipalt is currently on the market, priced £500,000, through finestproperties.co.uk

WHAT TO DO in the flower garden Give lavender the snip Leave the flowering stems of lavender unpruned until the very last drop of nectar and grain of pollen has been taken by the bees and pollinating insects that visit the plants daily. Depending on the variety, this is usually at some point from mid-August onwards. Hard prune mature plants after flowering but don’t cut them back into the old brown wood. This is one of the lovelier jobs to do in summer as every snip releases fragrance from their aromatic oils.

Lavender benefits from a good but careful trim in late August

Give plants their daily fix of water Forgetful, busy or travelling gardeners may want to invest in an easy-to-use irrigation system to ensure their plant s stock stays alive and healthy at all times. Solar-powered systems just require a container filled with water and good sun, and the pump will handle the rest. They don’t need a power supply or an outdoor water tap. Gardena’s Solar-Powered Irrigation AquaBloom set (approx £90) is easy to use and has 14 pre-set programmes that allow you to water up to 20 plant pots. Just one day of sunshine is sufficient to charge the batteries via the solar panel. You can find more about it at Gardena.com/uk.

RHS Wisley’s Exotic Gardens showcases tropical plants that do well in our climate

Raise a new plant family Now is a good time to take cuttings of tender plants, such as pelargoniums and fuchsias, as well as hardy plants, including salvias and penstemons. They should root fairly quickly and give you plenty of new members for your garden next year. Select non-flowering shoots that are roughly 12cm tall and cut them off with a sharp pair of secateurs first thing in the morning. Cut just below a leaf joint and remove the outer leaves, then place them around the edges of a 9cm pot (the warmest part). Put them somewhere light but away from bright sunlight and keep the soil moist. At this time of the year it’s not essential to cover the pots with a plastic bag, you’ll find they root quite quickly without. Over-winter the cuttings in a frost-free environment.

AUGUST’S wildlife garden visits One of Britain’s most familiar and frequently seen mammals, the grey squirrel was introduced from North America in the 19th century. Unlike our own native red squirrel, which prefers to live in woods, greys also thrive happily in parks and gardens. They have a varied diet of nuts, acorns, beechmast, tree bark, leaves, fungi, shoots, buds and flowers and will take what they can from bird feeders. They have few predators and may live to around six years. Grey squirrels are agile, acrobatic and active by day, making them one of the most entertaining British wildlife creatures to watch. They run swiftly up and down trees and bound briskly across the ground in short leaps but it’s the humorous way they bury food supplies at this time of the Squirrels like to keep a watchful eye when eating year that will make you smile. Having found a suitable or burying their food hiding place, often in a plant pot, a squirrel will dig a hole and bury their treasure while furtively looking around to check that they’re not being watched by any other squirrels that may want to steal their bounty. Nuts and tree bark make These intelligent and resourceful mammals have been particularly successful at invading towns up much of a squirrel’s diet and gardens. Young squirrels are born in tree-top dreys in spring and early summer. The average but fruit is a real favourite litter size is three and the male plays no part in the rearing. The youngsters disperse when they can feed themselves, at about 10 weeks, and they breed for the first time when they’re a year old.

WHAT TO DO on the veg plot

Pick rainbow chard for delicious fresh greens

Make nutritious compost There’s plenty of produce to harvest during the month of August but save any unwanted leafy vegetation for the compost heap. Avoid adding diseased material or thick stems that will take a long time to break down. The art of producing dark, crumbly compost lies in filling your bin with a mix of nitrogen- and carbon-rich material. Soft green vegetation, uncooked vegetable kitchen waste and grass cuttings contain a lot of moisture and are all rich in nitrogen. Combine them with shredded woody stems and paper, which are carbon rich. These will absorb some of the excess moisture while also providing pockets of air throughout the mix. The composting Keep aubergine process is aerobic; it needs oxygen to circulate plants in control for throughout the decaying material to sustain a top-quality crop the bacteria and micro-organisms that break down the decaying matter. Homemade garden compost provides a brilliant source of nutrients for the veg patch.

It’s time to pinch out In order to get the best crop from certain vegetables, it’s important to curtail their growth so they direct all their energy towards producing a good harvest rather than continuing to grow taller. Pinch out the top of tomato plants once they’ve formed about five or six decent trusses of tomatoes and remove some of the leaves that are shading the fruits. Doing this will help the tomatoes to ripen much more quickly. It’s not just tomatoes though, aubergines should also be restricted to producing about five or six fruits, so pinch out their growing tips too. And the same goes for runner beans, which, left to their own devices, would happily reach further and further for the sky. Remove their growing tips once they arrive at the top of their support – as well as encouraging them to grow side shoots, it will also make picking their produce more manageable.

Grow fruits at an angle to maximise space

August is a bountiful month in the fruit garden so indulge each crop by eating it fresh, making it into jams and preserves or storing it in the freezer. Early cropping varieties of apples and pears are often ready to be picked this month, but the only way to be sure they’re ripe is to taste one. Pears are better picked when they’re under ripe as they’ll naturally ripen on their own within a few days. Early cropping apples don’t store nearly as well as later cropping varieties.

GROW A MINI ORCHARD Lack of space needn’t be an issue if you want to grow fruit in your garden. Space-saving cordon fruit trees carry their fruit from a single, vertical stem. They can be grown vertically or at a 45° angle (see above), which increases the length of their stem and makes picking the fruit easier. Either way, they’ll need some sort of structural support to sustain their weight. The opportunity to grow a range of varieties, including cherries, plums, apples, damsons and pears in a restricted area allows owners of small gardens to have their own mini orchard. Keep them in shape by giving them a summer prune (while the fruit is still on the tree), this stops them reverting back to a large, Train fruit trees to grow vertically in multi-branching fruit tree. tiny gardens

BEDROOMS FOR BUGS Looking for a way to bring more life into your garden but don’t want the hassle of looking after plants and flowerbeds? Tool manufacturer RYOBI has the solution: build a bug hotel. You can use almost anything to put one together but RYOBI is encouraging you to use nothing but natural materials. If you’re unsure about how to go about it there’s a simple step-by-step guide to constructing five-star lodgings for sixlegged critters on the RYOBI website (uk.ryobitools.eu). Once you’ve built your hotel, take a photo and tag @RyobiToolsUK using #MyRobi to show off your creation.
