Message from the EARCOS Board President & Executive Director Dear EARCOS Community,

Welcome

It is said that absence makes the heart grow stronger and for sure this is the case with our pandemic disrupted EARCOS community. It is a full three years since we last hosted the EARCOS Leadership Conference and I know all of us are looking forward to some great learning, to reconnecting with old friends, and to making new connections. EARCOS has long been known as a welcoming and caring organization, with conferences and other in person professional development opportunities playing a key role in bringing us together. Personal connections are vitally important in helping all our schools improve, face challenges together, and above all do the best we can for our kids and school communities. Thankfully, we are back and we know good things will happen as a result. Please spare a thought to our EARCOS colleagues who cannot make it to the conference due to pandemic restrictions. We will miss all of you and look forward to seeing you in 2023. Credit must be given when it is due and with this in mind I would like to recognize the magnificent work of Ed Greene and the EARCOS staff. Travel and conferences stopped abruptly, but Ed and the team swiftly organized an amazing array of online professional development opportunities to keep our member schools learning and connected. This was by no means an easy task and I know we are all very grateful. I would also like to recognize the members of the EARCOS Board who provided thoughtful and innovative support to the organization throughout this challenging time. We are all really excited that the ELC is taking place and we want to make it the best possible experience for everyone. If anyone needs help, please contact the EARCOS desk or reach out to Ed or anyone on the EARCOS Board and we will do our very best to provide assistance. All the best. Dr. Andy Davies EARCOS Board President

Dear Delegates, What a great pleasure it is to welcome all of you to the 52nd annual Leadership Conference of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools. Finally, Together Again! This conference is the product of over two and a half years of planning, re-planning, cancellations, adjustments, and then planning again. For all of us, the past three years have been an extraordinary journey. The very fact that we can gather here today is reason enough for celebration. But we will also celebrate the incredible array of insights, talents and ideas that have come about through all of your hard work during the pandemic. We are so fortunate to have so many fascinating speakers and presenters on the program this year. Travel is not as easy as it was a few years ago, so I thank you for the extra efforts you have made to make this trip to Bangkok. We cannot begin the conference without recognising the generous support from so many of you. This conference could not exist without the constant support of our advertisers and sponsors. There are far too many to mention here but please be sure to visit them at the exhibition area and thank them for all they do for education in our region. I also wish to give my deepest appreciation to the board for their patience and support over the past several years. And we must not forget the dedicated EARCOS staff who have done so much to make this conference happen. The details that go into bringing a conference such as this to life are mind-boggling! I wish each of you a wonderful conference. Learn, enjoy, make new acquaintances, embrace those you have missed these past three years, and take the time to enjoy this great city. With best wishes, Edward E. Greene, Ph.D. Executive Director

“Together, Again.”

3 Truths for the Future of Education: Hope & Courage through a Practical Framework to Lead Meaningful Change Pre-pandemic the majority of us were very aware that the education system was designed for a different era, mid-pandemic, the inadequacies of the system were laid bare. The pandemic lifted the veil on many deep-seated problems (“truths”) with education, namely: inequality, the research to practice gap, and the lagging evolution of the education system in response to our changing world. As we build back, let’s build back by embracing the profound implications of these three truths and lead the change that is in our hearts to lead - with clarity, conviction, and courage.

TIM JARVIS Explorer/Environmentalist

‘By Endurance We Conquer’ Biography

Tim’s childhood love of the outdoors has led to his career as an environmental scientist and in leading expeditions to some of the world’s most remote places. With more than 25 years of experience in both disciplines, Tim has a wealth of knowledge about what it takes to lead teams to perform at the highest level – knowledge he regularly shares with corporate and academic audiences around the world. Tim’s sustainability beliefs, like his approach to expeditions, are based around a pragmatic optimism – understanding the scale of the task ahead and prevailing through a combination of outcome-focused goal-setting, adaptability, resilience and good teamwork. He also understands that there is no single solution to achieving sustainability outcomes. This is reflected in the wide range of initiatives he supports and works on, including environmental advocacy work with conservation charities WWF and FFI, his recent four years of patronage of Nature Play SA whose goal is to encourage children to spend more time in nature, and five years’ service on the board of Zoos SA – leaders in endangered species conservation. visit https://www.timjarvis.org/about/ (Read more on Whova App)

From Survive to Thrive: Creating the Next Normal for International Schools During VUCA Times Biography

For over three decades, Homa Sabet Tavangar’s work has addressed themes of culture, innovation, leadership, global citizenship and global competence, and deep diversity, equity, belonging and inclusion. She connects timely topics of the moment with the timeless desire to work with purpose and make a difference – whatever one’s circumstances. Homa’s clients range from Fortune 50 corporations to public, international and independent K-12 schools around the world; from an Ivy League university to Disney Channel and numerous not-for-profit public and multilateral organizations and professional associations. Co-founding the Big Questions Institute represents a natural extension of her work, especially during a time of unprecedented global challenges. Homa is the author of widely-acclaimed Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be At Home in the World (Random House, 2009), Global Kids (Barefoot, 2019); The Global Education Toolkit for Elementary Learners (Sage/Corwin, 2014), contributor to Mastering Global Literacy, Heidi Hayes-Jacobs, ed. (Solution Tree, Nov. 2013) and the 3-book Take-Action Guide to World-Class Learners (Corwin, 2016) series with Professor Yong Zhao. Growing Up Global was the inspiration behind NBC-Universal’s animated series Nina’s World, starring Rita Moreno, and has been hailed by international education and business leaders and media ranging from Dr. Jane Goodall to the BBC, NPR, NBC, ABC, Washington Post.com, Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, Boston Globe, PBS, Scholastic, Parents Magazine, Rodale, and many more. Homa has lived on four continents, has heritage in four world religions, and is the mother of three daughters. She and her husband live just outside Philadelphia.

Special Presentation 15:30-16:15 Venue: The Study

The Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award Dr. Richard T. Krajczar’s commitment to international education was unparalleled and equaled only by his genuine love for friends, colleagues and the students served across the EARCOS region. Caring for others was not just Dr. K’s passion but raison d’etre. His support of those who provided sustenance and care for the less fortunate was among his most endearing traits. To that end, the EARCOS Board of Trustees has established the Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award to recognize, each year, the work of one not-for-profit organization with a proven record of philanthropy in the East Asia/Pacific Region.
