Jacques Wilson hitting his stride early

The 2014 Men’s champ has won both his matches in convincing fashion

Alexandria Echo Press

Jacques Wilson has put himself in the hunt for another Men’s Resorters title. The 2014 Men’s champion has found a rhythm early on and has made quick work of both of his opponents.

Wilson, who played college golf at Kansas and Charleston Southern, has played just 25 out of the possible 36 holes so far in the match play portion of the tournament and is heading into the quarterfinals with a lot of momentum.

With a win over the No. 25 seed Spencer Hutton, Wilson has now advanced to the quarterfinal round.

In the quarterfinals, he’ll face off against the Men’s medalist, Josh Galvin of Maple Grove.

Galvin fought off Jack Holtz, a standout in the Alexandria High School boys golf program, who nearly came from behind to defeat Galvin.

On the bottom half of the bracket, the No. 31 seed Will Harris has continued to pull off clutch victories and has now advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal

round.

After beating the No. 2 seed Gunnar Broin, the runner-up from the Men’s 2022 Resorters

Tournament, on Monday, Harris defeated the No. 18 seed Jim Lehman, who won the 2009 Resorters Men’s title.

He and Ryan Conn are the only two double-digit seeds heading into Friday’s quarterfinal round.

The winner of the quarterfinal rounds is scheduled to play early on Friday morning in the semifinals. The

championship match is scheduled to start in the early afternoon on Saturday.

galvin def.

Holtz, 1-up

Galvin led by as much as 3-up through six holes against the 17th-seeded Holtz, but Holtz went down swinging.

Holtz won the seventh hole and the 11th hole, the latter of which he birdied (his second of the day).

Galvin pushed his lead back up to 2-up with a win on hole No. 12, but Holtz responded by winning hole No. 13.

Both golfers pared the next four holes, and Galvin, the 2020 runner-up in the Resorters Men’s division, held on to the win.

Wilson def.

Hutton, 8-6 Wilson hit his stride early in Thursday’s round as he birdied the 1st and 2nd hole to take a 2-up lead over the No. 25 seed Spencer Hutton. Wilson ended the front nine with wins on holes 6, 7, and 9. Wilson sealed his quick win with birdied on holes 10 and 11.

MEN'S SENIOR

No. 6 seed falls in Men’s Senior

It

all comes down to Aldrich, Freeman, Ystebo, and Montplaisir

After a whirlwind of upsets in the opening round of the Men’s Senior Championship division of the 102nd Resorters Tournament, Thursday’s quarterfinal matches were not as unexpected.

There was one big upset, however. Larry Montplaisir, the No. 14 seed, knocked off the No. 6 seed, Mark Lyczewski, 4-3.

Another underdog outcome: Daniel Ystebo, the No. 23 seed, eliminated the No. 18 seed, Mark Pokorney.

Other winners were the No. 1 seed Mark Aldrich and the 12th seed Jon Freeman.

Aldrich def.

Howard, 6-4

Aldrich surged out front early against Curt Howard, winning the first two holes with a birdie and a par. Howard battled back by matching Aldrich’s par on No. 3 and then winning the fourth hole with a par to get within one.

Aldrich stopped the rally with a birdie on No. 5 and went 3-up with a par win on No. 7. Both golfers halved the next two holes, which kept Aldrich’s lead intact.

Howard was unable to win a hole on the back nine while Aldrich played mistake-free golf, hitting nothing but pars and a birdie on No. 13. He won Nos. 12, 13, and 14 to seal the win.

Freeman def.

Larson, 3-2

Jon Freeman didn’t give Michael Larson many opportunities by consistently sinking pars and birdies throughout the match.

After halving the first two holes with pars, Freeman took the lead with a par on No. 3 and then added a birdie win on No. 5 to go 2-up. Freeman matched Larson’s birdie on No. 6 and Larson’s par on No. 7 before making his third

birdie on No. 8 to go 3-up.

Freeman had a couple of hiccups on Nos. 9 and 10 with bogies but only lost one of those holes to hang on to a two-hole lead. Freeman won No. 12 with a birdie to go 3-up. Larson sliced the lead to two with a par on No. 13, but Freeman quickly answered with his sixth birdie, this one on No. 14 to go 3-up. Both golfers halved Nos. 15 and 16, which ended the match.

On the day, Freeman was 2-under par while Larson was 1-over.

Ystebo def.

Pokorney, 1-up

In the bracket’s closest

match of the day, Ystebo outlasted Mark Pokorney in 18 holes.

Ystebo held a 2-up lead after four holes, but Pokorney tied the match with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6. Deadlocked at the turn, Ystebo surged back into the lead with a par win on No. 10 and followed it up with a birdie win on No. 11. The match tightened up when Pokorney carded an eagle on the par-5 No. 12 to draw within one.

Ystebo matched Pokorney’s par on No. 13 but got into trouble on the next hole with a bogey, giving up the hole to Pokorney’s birdie. With the match tied, Ystebo

made a clutch par on No. 15 to vault into the lead. They both halved the next three holes to preserve Ystebo’s 1-up win.

Montplaisir def.

Lyczewski, 4-3

Back-to-back bogey losses on Nos. 3 and 4 put Lyczewski in a hole he couldn’t dig out of. Montplaisir added a birdie win on No. 6 and a par win on No. 7 to go 4-up, an advantage held at the turn.

Montplaisir struck for another birdie on No. 11 to go 5-up. Lyczewski made a mini-comeback, winning Nos. 12 with a birdie and 13 with a par to pull within three. Montplaisir matched Lyczewski’s par on No. 14 and then iced the match with a par win on No. 15 to take the match 4-3.

WOMEN'S EXECUTIVE

Top seeds tumble out of the tournament

A pair of eagles and a smattering of birdies highlighted the Women’s Executive quarterfinal round at the 102nd Resorters Tournament on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, which saw all four lower seeds pull off wins and oust the top seed and defending champion out of the bracket while also booking their spots in Friday’s semifinals.

Beckendorf def.

Tessmer-Jones, 1-up

Despite winning the first hole and taking an early lead, the No. 9 seed Heidi Beckendorf had to pull off a late comeback to upset the No. 1 seed Karla Tessmer-Jones. Tessmer-Jones won holes 2, 3, and 5 to take a twohole lead, but Beckendorf won the ninth to cut Tessmer-Jones’ lead down.

Tessmer-Jones won the 10th hole with a birdie and the 12th hole, but Beckendorf turned the tables after that.

Beckendorf trailed by three holes heading into hole 13 but won four of the next five holes to storm back into the lead and into the next round.

Both golfers notched a birdie on hole 6.

Aldrich def.

Faith, 5-4

Both the No. 5 seed Betsy Alrdich and the No. 4 seed Stacy Faith tallied eagles on hole

12 in their quarterfinal match. And both golfers scored a birdie early in the match, but Faith was unable to keep up with Aldrich on the scorecard sending the No. 5 seed into the next round.

Aldrich won the first, third, fourth, sixth, and ninth holes on the front nine. Aldrich sealed the win with a par on the 14th hole.

Aldrich is in the hunt for her sixth Women’s Executive division title.

Her most recent came in 2021. She’s won four out of the last six division titles.

Allyn def. O’Donnell, 2-1

The No. 10 seed Andrea Allyn pulled off her second straight upset of match play, overcoming a two-birdie performance by the No. 2 seed and defending champion, Amanda O’Donnell.

Vanyo takes down McGuire in a thrilling battle

Empanger rolls on

Thursday’s match between the No. 9 seed Rick Vanyo and the No. 1 seed Dennis McGuire captivated the course at Alexandria Golf Club in what was a back-andforth battle to the end.

Vanyo captured the win and advances to the semifinals, where he’ll meet another top-four seed on Friday.

Vanyo def. McGuire, 2-1

Vanyo and McGuire battled well against one another and didn’t give the other too much of an edge. Vanyo won holes 1, 4, 5, and 7, while McGuire won holes 2, 3, 6, and 8, and that match stood even after eight holes.

But with a win on holes 9 and 11, Vanyo took a 2-up lead that he would never relinquish.

McGuire won hole 14 to cut Vanyo’s lead to 1-up, but the 2020 Men’s Senior champ held on from there to advance to the semifinals as the No. 9 seed.

M. Herzog def. Blanchard, 4-3

The No. 4 seed Mike Herzog took the lead after the first hole and never looked back in his win over the No. 12 seed Norty Blanchard.

Herzog, last year’s Men’s Senior runner-up, won the first two holes and then traded hole wins near the end of the front nine and led 2-up heading to the back nine.

Blanchard cut into Herzog’s lead with a win on hole 10 but wins on holes 12, 13, and 15 sealed the win for Herzog.

Empanger def.

S. Herzog, 5-3

The defending division champion Jon Empanger didn’t lose a single hole in his quarterfinal match against the No. 7 seed Steve Herzog.

Empanger won holes 1, 5, 7, 13, and 15 in

the win. Empanger shot 2-under par in 15 holes as he had two birdies and 13 pars.

Mattson def.

Hildahl, 5-3

Third-seeded Greg Mattson finished his match strong against the No. 6 seed Mark Hildahl. With wins on holes 14 and 15, Mattson won the match 5-3.

On the front nine, Mattson built a 3-up lead thanks to winning three out of the first four holes and winning

holes 6 and 9. Hildahl won the second and fifth holes with a birdie.

These two traded hole wins to start the back nine.

Mattson is a 1-time Resorters winner, as he won the 2016 Men’s Senior title, and he finished runner-up in the Men’s Senior division in 2013 behind Steve Herzog.

Defending champ rolls on in Grand Masters

Ekdahl upsets Harris in first round

Alexandria Echo Press

Gary Ekdahl took down a three-time Resorters champion, Dave Harris, in the Men’s Grand Masters during the opening round of match play Thursday.

It was an upset in terms of seeding. Harris was the No. 3 seed, while Ekdahl was No. 6. Meanwhile, the division’s defending champion and No. 2 seed, Mike Golden, escaped with a 3-2 win to keep his repeat hopes alive.

Medalist advances with bye

Since only seven golfers competed in this year’s Grand Masters, the medalist, Skip Madsen, received a bye in the opening round. He shot a two-day qualifying round of 158 (14-over-par).

Madsen is making his sixth appearance in the Resorters.

Today, Madsen will square off against Clayton Pike, who is playing in his 58th Resorters and has racked up numerous Resorters flight championships over the years. Pike has won three club championships – the AGC, Yellowstone Country Club, and Austin Country Club.

“The Resorters and Alexandria have always been a family vacation for us, and now that my son, Kevin, who was a hockey stand-out, is playing in the tournament, it is extra special to me,” Pike noted on his Resorters entry form.

Pike def. Douglas, 1-up

Clayton Pike and William Douglas had a down-to-the-wire match, and Pike ended up on top. No other scoring details were available.

Golden def. Obele, 3-2

Mike Golden was a 3-2 winner over Gary Obele. Scoring details were not available.

Golden has played in 31 Resorters tournaments. A highlight was winning the Men’s Grand Masters Championship last year. He’s also won numerous club

Swedberg stands out ahead of semifinals

In the Men’s Regular division at the 102nd Resorters Tournament, the No. 3 seed Drew Swedberg, an Alexandria alum, has won both of his top-flight matches plays with five holes to spare and is the only top-four seed left in the Resorters Men’s Regular division.

Two other top seeds fell during quarterfinal play on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, after carding some costly bogeys. And the flight’s lowest qualifier continues to upset the field.

Krulic def.

Triebenbach, 3-2

The No. 16 seed Jordan Krulic pulled off a second straight upset after he jumped out to an early lead with the help of two birdies against the No. 8 seed Chase Triebenbach of Osakis.

Triebenbach fell four holes behind on the front nine after posting a bogey and double bogey on holes 8 and 9, respectively. He pulled two holes back with birdies on holes 10 and 12 but couldn’t make up enough ground in time.

Coatta def. Resler, 3-2

The No. 12 seed Max Coatta also double-dipped in the upset bowl by taking down the No. 4 seed Luke Resler.

The pair each snagged two birdies on the front nine and entered the back half dead-even.

The pair added another birdie each, but a couple of costly bogeys from Resler sent Coatta onto the semifinals.

Coatta won three of the first four holes on the back nine and held on from there.

Banyai def.

Cranmer, 2-1

The No. 7 seed Kendell Banyai carded four birdies en route to an upset victory over the No. 2 seed Mac Cranmer.

Cranmer was able to tally three birdies himself but succumbed to a couple of costly bogeys, most notably one on hole 16, which gave Banyai the two-hole lead and a path to the next round.

Banyai led 1-up for most of the match.

Swedberg def. Bowden, 6-5

After a dominant display in his quarterfinal match against the No.11 seed Parker Bowden.

Drew Swedberg is the only top-four seed to make it to Friday’s semifinals.

Swedberg started the day off hot with two straight birdies and finished the day with three total.

His victory was highlighted by an eagle on hole 12, and he didn’t lose a single hole. Bowden was able to match Swedberg’s birdie

on hole 1. Swedberg won holes 2, 4, and 6, along with the first three holes on the back nine.

Johnson dominates again in quarterfinal win

Seeking to avenge his 2022 Resorters final’s loss, top-seeded Garrison Johnson has been leading the Junior 10-12 division from the start and has posted backto-back early victories to earn his spot in Friday’s semifinals at the 102nd Resorters Tournament. He will be joined there by Tyler Cullen, Tyler Bull, and Lewis Kuhn after having defeated Jagger Kulics on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023.

Johnson def. Kulics, 5-3

The No. 1 seed Garrison Johnson won five of six holes, parring four, to notch a quick victory over the No. 8 seed Jagger Kulics. Kulics was playing in his third Resorters tournament, competing alongside his brothers Landon and Mason, who both played in the Men’s Regular division.

Cullen def. Bell, 10 holes

The No. 4 seed Tyler Cullen and the No. 5 seed Josh Bell swapped

alternating pars for most of their quarterfinal match before both parring on hole 18 to send their match to a tiebreak for a spot in the semifinals that Cullen eventually claimed. Bell was making his third appearance in the Resorters Junior 10-12 championship flight.

Bull

def. Conder, 1-up

The No. 7 seed Tyler Bull sank a clutch birdie on hole 18 and won the final three holes of his quarterfinal match against the No. 2 seed Crew Conder to erase a two-hole deficit and claim his spot in the semifinals.

Bull’s mother, Krista, also pulled off a late upset in the Women’s Executive division Thursday night to advance to her semifinals. Conder was in his third Resorters and a former consolation flight champion.

Kuhn def. Geris, 3-2

After knocking in an opening birdie on hole

10 and winning hole 11, the No. 3 seed Lewis Kuhn had to wait until hole 16 before he polished off the No. 11 seed Jameson Geris and advanced to the semifinals. Geris was competing in his second Resorters.

MEN’S EXECUTIVE

Top seed bows out

If you like upsets, the Men’s Executive Championship division was the one to watch Thursday.

Five of the eight matches were won by the underdog, according to the 2023 Resorters Tournament’s seeding.

The biggest shocker was 17th seed Dan Klein toppling Andrew Olson, the No. 1 seed who blistered the course with a 67 round during qualifying.

Two other stunners: The No. 31 seed, Bill Mulvahill, knocked out the No. 15 seed, Sam Pokorney; and the No. 22 seed Cory Schultz upended the No. 6 seed, Joe Sauer.

The other two upsets weren’t as dramatic: Dave Christensen, the 9th seed, defeated Andy Petersen, the No. 8 seed; and 10th seed Andrew Johnson prevailed over the No. 7 seed, Matt Norgaard.

Meanwhile, three seeds in the top five survived – the 2017 champion Daryl Schomer, Bryant Black, and Bryan Hoops.

Klein def. Olson, 2-1

Klein won the first hole with a birdie only to lose the next to Olson’s birdie on No. 2. Olson took the lead with a par on No. 3. Both golfers halved the next two holes before Klein made birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 to regain the lead. It was short-lived, though – Olson took No. 9 with a par to tie the match at the turn.

Klein made consecutive birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to go 2-up, but Olson battled back, taking No. 12 with a birdie to draw to within one. After halving the next two holes, Olson ran into bogey trouble on No. 15, putting Klein 2-up. Both golfers matched pars on the next two holes, which preserved Klein’s upset.

Christensen def. Petersen, 3-2

Dave Christensen and

Andy Petersen battled through 16 holes filled with pars, a combined six birdies, and just three bogeys. Both golfers won two holes on the front –Petersen with a par on No. 1 and a par on No. 9, and Christensen with a par on No. 2 and a birdie on No. 8. Christensen went out front with a birdie on No. 11, but Petersen’s birdie on the next hole squared the match.

Christensen took No. 14 with a birdie to go 1-up and was able to nail down a 3-2 win.

Black def.

O’Donnell, 5-4

Black built a 3-up lead by the turn. His opponent, Kerry O’Donnell, sliced the lead to two with a birdie on No. 11, but Black kept the pressure on, taking Nos. 12, 13, and 14 with a birdie, par, birdie to win it, 5-4.

Hoops def. Johnson, 6-4

Bryan Hoops was on a par roll against Dan Johnson. Hoops hit nothing but pars on the first nine holes. Along the way, he won 5-holes and didn’t lose any. It took an eagle for Johnson to get his first win. It happened on the par-4 10th hole.

Johnson made birdie on No. 11, but so did Johnson. Hoops continued his roll by going birdie, par, birdie on the next three holes to wrap up a 5-4 win.

On the day, Hoops was 2-under-par after 14 holes.

Mulvahill def.

Pokorney, 1-up

A day after Mulvahill, the 31st seed, the winner of the last five Resorters Men’s Executive champion, Troy

Johnson, Mulvahill pulled off another underdog feat. This time it was against the 15th-seed, Sam Pokorney.

Mulvahill took an early lead with birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 and added another birdie win on the 6th hole to go 3-up, a lead he held at the turn.

Mulvahill ran into trouble on the par-5 12th hole and ended up with a double-bogey. He quickly recovered by matching Pokorney’s par on No. 13. Both men had to settle for bogeys on the 14th hole. Mulvahill took No. 15 with a par to go 3-up, but Pokorney refused to give up, winning Nos. 16 with a birdie and 17 with a par to get within one. Mulvahill was able to make par on No. 18 to wrap up a 1-up win.

Johnson def. Norgaard, 6-4

Johnson never trailed against Norgaard. He won four holes on the front with pars on Nos. 2 and 3, a birdie on No. 6, and another par on No. 7, and carried a 4-up lead into the back nine. Things didn’t get any better for Norgaard after the turn. Johnson’s birdie on No. 10 put him 5-up. Norgaard won just one hole, a birdie on No. 12, and the match ended when Johnson won both 13 and 14, going par, birdie to ice the win. Schomer def. Klein, 2-1

Schomer held on to a 1-up lead for most of the front nine. He did it with birdie wins on Nos. 1 and 6, and a par win on

No. 4. Klein, meanwhile, won Nos. 3 and 5 with birdies.

Klein stole the lead with wins on No. 10 and 11 with a par, birdie. Schomer tied it up with a par win on No. 13 and held tough the rest of the way to notch a 2-1 win.

Schultz def. Sauer, 1-up

Schultz drew first blood with a birdie on No. 1 and added a par win on No. 4. Sauer recovered with a par win on the next hole, but Schultz struck back

with a par on No. 7 and a birdie on No. 8 to go 3-up. Sauer won the 9th hole and trailed by two at the turn.

Sauer won No. 10 with a par and then came through with a birdie on the 13th hole to tie the match. Schultz drilled a birdie on No. 14 to take a slim lead that held up; they both shot nothing but pars on the next four holes, which gave Schultz the victory.

Bull def. Baker, 20 holes

In a back-and-forth round that saw both golfers notch a birdie and win five holes, the No. 14 seed Krista Bull topped the No. 11 seed Molly Baker in extra holes to cap off a full round of upsets, sending Bull into the semifinals.

Bull began the match

with a 2-up lead after two holes. She birdied the 2nd hole. Baker won holes 14 and 15 to take a 1-up lead, but Bull won the 16th hole to tie the match.

Neither golfer held a lead bigger than 2-up at any point of the match.

Krista Bull’s son, Tyler, also earned a clutch victory in the Junior 10-12 division on Thursday as well.

Harris broke through with his first winning hole, No. 8 with a par, and pulled to within one with another par win on No. 9.

Both golfers bogeyed the 10th hole, and then Ekdahl took No. 11 with a par to go 2-up once again. Ekdahl ran into trouble on the par-5 12th and had to settle for a double-bogey, giving Harris an easy par win.

They both bogeyed No. 13, and Ekdahl’s bogey on No. 14 won the hole and put him 1-up. Ekdahl made par on No. 15 to go 3-up

and matched Harris’ par on No. 16 to close out the match.

South Dakota’s Logan Hamak and Iowa’s Ian Meyer played a tightly-contested match on Thursday.

Hamak, the No. 4 seed, took a 1-up lead on the first hole, but Meyer, the 20th seed, won the third hole with a birdie to knot up the match.

Hamak then birdied the sixth and seventh holes, but Meyer won the eighth and ninth holes to tie the match.

Hamak took a 1-up lead with a win on hole 11, but Meyer tied the match with a win on the 13th hole. Hamak went on to win 1-up.

Conn def. L.

Johnson, 19 holes

In the NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball tournament, experts always say that there’s at least one 12 vs. 5 matchup that is going to be exciting to watch.

And on the golf side of things, the Men’s Championship division 12 vs. 5 matchup between the No. 12 seed Ryan Conn and Lincoln Johnson was precisely that, exciting.

Johnson birdied the first and sixth hole to earn two hole wins on the front nine, but Conn won holes 2 and 4, and the match was even after the front nine.

Conn took a 2-up lead with birdies on the 10th and 12th holes to go up by two holes.

Johnson won the 14th hole, but Conn won the 16th to extend his back up to 2-up over Johnson with two holes to play.

Johnson, who finished as the Men’s runner-up in 2016, won the 17th hole with an eagle and the 18th hole with a birdie to force a playoff.

Conn won the playoff to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.

Harris def.

Lehman, 2-1

Harris’ match against Lehman was closely contested throughout,

especially on the front nine, as both golfers won two holes.

Harris broke away a bit with wins on holes 10 and 13, and while Lehman won hole 15 to cut Harris’ lead to one hole, Harris won the 17th hole to win 2-up and advance to the quarterfinals.

Bigger def.

Jarrett, 2-up

The No. 20 seed Lukas Bigger has eliminated the runner-up from the 2022 Men’s division, Nick Jarrett.

Both golfers birdied the first hole, but Bigger birdied the second hole to take a 1-up lead.

Jarrett, the No. 4 seed, tied the match with a birdie on hole No. 8. He then took the lead with a birdie on hole No. 10.

Bigger responded by tying the match with a win on hole No. 13, and he took the lead by winning hole No. 15. Bigger went on to win 2-up.

Adams def. Sauer, 4-3

A strong front nine was exactly what the No. 3 seed Nate Adams needed on Thursday to beat the No. 19 seed Jon Sauer on Thursday.

Adams birdied the third, fifth, and sixth holes and won the sev-

enth hole to take a 4-up lead.

Sauer battled back by winning holes 10 and 11, but Adams won holes 13 and 15 to seal the 4-3 win.

Adams plays college golf at North Dakota State along with Galvin. Now both golfers will be playing in the quarterfinals on Friday, albeit on different sides of the bracket.

D. Johnson def. Gogel, 2-up

The No. 6 seed Davis Johnson started off his Thursday match off well against the No. 22 seed Thomas Gogel.

Johnson won the first hole with a birdie, and he pared the second hole.

From there on out, Johnson and Gogel exchanged wins, with Johnson leading throughout but not leading by more than two holes.

Johnson won holes 6, 9, 11,15, and 18, while Gogel won holes 5, 8, 10, 12, and 17 to keep the match throughout.

Johnson carded a handful of birdies throughout his round, which helped him advance into Friday’s quarterfinal round, where he’ll face off against Adams.
