Happy New Year, and welcome to our 2023 season.

Following the uncertainty of recent years, I am delighted to say that the theatre had a very good 2022, and we’ve just finished our record-breaking pantomime, welcoming over 46,000 excited festive revellers. We have also successfully secured funding from Arts Council England for the next three years, helping us establish a solid foundation for our work going forward. The Arts Council funding drives the awardwinning Education and Community work that the Everyman Theatre conducts throughout Gloucestershire and beyond. We are now looking to extend our influence, specifically in the city of Gloucester, and hope to announce some exciting new plans in the coming year.

In 2022 we launched our all-new Priority Access Membership allowing members to receive advanced notification of events and be the first to purchase tickets. We are aware that next year may be very hard for many people, and we are working to keep our ticket prices as affordable as possible. We will continue offering concession tickets whenever possible and as many opening night specials as

we can. We hope you’ll find many performances that appeal to you in the upcoming season. We are delighted to welcome the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Home, I’m Darling, Willy Russell’s ever-popular Blood Brothers and The Rocky Horror Show to highlight just a few. I am particularly delighted that I will be producing a new national tour of The Full Monty, based on the award-winning 1997 film, and that production will open right here at the Everyman Theatre.

Our spectacular theatre would be nothing without its staff, and I am very pleased to receive compliments about how our front-of-house and box office team welcome our guests to the Everyman Theatre. Our staff is what makes the Everyman Theatre the heart of Cheltenham and an important cultural institution bringing in visitors and business from all over the world. On the second floor accessed by stairs or a lift is a comfortable airy space, where you can dine at selected shows and dates for pre-show lunch or supper from our well balanced two-course menu using the freshest of ingredients prepared in house.

You can also reserve a table on matinee days that don’t offer the pre-show menu and dine from our Café Menu which includes main courses. All dietary requirements are catered for and all the above can be booked online with your ticket.

Lloyd Griffith: One Tonne of Fun

Lloyd was recently one of the first national anthem singers to sing the new anthem at various football matches around the country.

Lloyd will soon be appearing in Nolly, an ITV Studios drama about the famous soap opera, Crossroads, playing the part of Paul Henry – the actor who portrayed Benny in the series. Starring Helena Bonham Carter, the mini-series is written by Russell T Davies, directed by Peter Hoar (It’s A Sin) and executive produced by Nicola Schindler.

Home, I’m Darling

Following sold-out seasons at the National Theatre and in the West End, Laura Wade’s Olivier Award-winning comedy embarks on its first UK tour.

How happily married are the happily married?

Every couple needs a little fantasy to keep their marriage sparkling. But behind the gingham curtains, things start to unravel, and being a domestic goddess is not as easy as it seems…

BAFTA-winner Jessica Ransom (Doc Martin, Armstrong and Miller, Horrible Histories), Diane Keen (Doctors, The Cuckoo Waltz) and Neil McDermott (EastEnders, The Royal) lead the cast in this thought-provoking new comedy by Laura Wade (Posh/The Riot Club) about one woman’s quest to be the perfect 1950s housewife.

Home, I’m Darling received its World Premiere at Theatr Clwyd in 2018, before running at the National Theatre and transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in the West End, winning the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

This production reunites the original creative team, led by Theatr Clwyd Artistic Director and Co-Director Designate of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Tamara Harvey.

It is co-directed by Hannah Noone, with design by Olivier award-winner Anna Fleischle, lighting by Lucy Carter, sound design by Tom Gibbons and choreography by Charlotte Broom.

Unexpected Twist is the re-telling of the Charles Dickens classic, Oliver Twist, by one the bestloved figures in the children’s book world, Michael Rosen. Two stories in one; Rosen’s story and the Dickens classic that inspired it. Two stories that twist together, unexpectedly! Shona and her class are studying the book, Oliver Twist. She’s the new girl in school and is finding it hard to stay out of trouble – much like Oliver himself! When she’s given a new phone by a stranger, she begins to suspect there’s something fishy about the new boys she’s met.

ENGLISH TOURING OPERA returns to Cheltenham with three great operas encompassing love and war, comedy and epic tragedy.

Unusually, each opera is performed on period instruments in partnership with the much-praised Old Street Band.

Giulio Cesare, Handel’s retelling of Caesar’s relationship with Cleopatra, is a majestic opera, in which the characters are driven to extreme feelings and actions, and in which the music strikes at the heart.

Lucrezia Borgia is a tragedy of great pathos. Donizetti created in Lucrezia one of his greatest roles - known as one of history’s most notorious poisoners, she is a cunning strategist and a loving mother at the same time, a complex women in a dangerous situation.

Il Viaggio a Reims is set in a provincial hotel, where guests from all over Europe are stranded on their way to a coronation. Lost luggage, intrigue, politics and romance all play their part in Rossini’s last Italian opera.

For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures.

His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. A most welcome return to the Irving Studio for Martin, a true folk legend.

After 17 years and seven solo albums Jackie Oates is a central figure on the English traditional music scene.

Regarded as one of the country’s best loved folk performers, Jackie brings elements of the English folk tradition to new people and places.

Hot on the heels of her latest release Gracious Wings, Jackie will be playing songs from her new album as well as ones from across her wonderful repertoire.

In John Tams: Don’t Get Me Started, the songmaker for War Horse, seven-time winner at the Radio 2 Folk Awards and former member of folk legends The Albion Band and Home Service, performing solo for the first time in this rare tour.

Heidi Talbot has graced the stages of folk festivals worldwide, played in front of symphony orchestras and has even sung at the White House.

Seeds of Memories is a wistful and uplifting show packed to the brim with puppetry and poetry. It offers a gentle exploration of losing a loved one and dealing with grief through the magic of the memories they leave behind.

Join “A” as he explores the garden and his relationship with his grandfather as both grow older together. After his Grandad passes away, “A” finds comfort in the love of nature they shared and the memories they grew together.

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, the Everyman’s in house company presents a joyous collection of short plays by Gloucestershire-based playwrights, exploring the history and stories that connect the Cotswolds and the monarchy.

Performed by a cast of professional and non-professional actors, the bespoke script has been developed by members of the Everyman Theatre’s Writers’ Group to create a light hearted, moving and thought-provoking entertainment.

Let’s Talk About Philip

When 30 years of family silence is broken Helen begins a detective-like quest to discover the hidden story behind her brother’s suicide.

The journey takes her back to her childhood, exotic Asian locations, a coroner’s court and the place where her brother died.

As surprising details are uncovered, Helen grapples with loyalty, long-held beliefs and how much we ever really know about those we love.

A fast-paced, candid, darkly comic and gripping play.

Murder – Just What The Doctor Ordered (The Anatomy Murders of 1828)

In Edinburgh between 1827 and 1828 science and murder cling together in a dance of death. Sixteen people are murdered by Burke and Hare.

Doctor Robert Knox, scientist, doctor, and anatomist supreme, waits in Surgeons Square to buy bodies for the sake of advancing medical knowledge. A body is delivered, money is paid and no questions are asked. A trail of terror leads to the dissection table of Doctor Knox. Murder will out and a price must be paid. Knox will have to pay that price.

This specially commissioned play has toured all over these islands to enormous success.

Steve Ashley

Steve Ashley is one of British folk’s finest singer-songwriters. His songs have been covered by Fairport Convention, Ralph McTell & Wizz Jones, Show of Hands, Martin Simpson and many others.

His award-winning debut album, Stroll On (1974) is a folk-rock classic and he’s since released 12 critically acclaimed albums of original songs. If you like songs that are edgy, challenging and compassionate - and sometimes very funny - then don’t miss this performance.

Cecil Beaton’s Diaries

For the first time ever, the diaries of photographer and stylist Sir Cecil Beaton are dramatised for the stage, to accompany his most iconic and lesser-seen photographs and designs.

Beaton’s photographs showed his versatility; his diaries exposed the cost. Even his triumphant designs for My Fair Lady never stopped his doubts. And his passion for Greta Garbo found fulfilment only in his writing.

Blisteringly funny and at times deeply moving, with appearances ranging from the Queen Mother and Elizabeth Taylor to Churchill and Capote, the diaries paint a self-portrait of the 20th century’s most compelling dandy.

The diaries are adapted and performed by Richard Stirling, whose recent credits as an actor include appearances in Bridgerton and The Man who Fell to Earth.

Andrew McCormack Trio Monday 20 February

Andrew has teamed up with fast rising bassist, Joe Downard and US drummer, Rod Youngs to complete a super trio that delivers a wide ranging contemporary piano trio in the vein of Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau.

The Paul Booth Quartet Monday 22 May

Paul (pictured above) hardly needs any introduction, a multiinstrumentalist who is regularly chosen to perform with wellknown artists. His band tonight consists of a talented line-up of pianist Tom Cawley, Michael Janisch bass and Rod Youngs on drums.

How to book

The Box Office is open Monday-Saturday for phone bookings 9.30am-5.00pm and in person 9.30am-7.30pm, unless there is no performance, in which case we close at 5.00pm.

We are normally closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays; however when a performance is taking place the Box Office will be open 2 hours beforehand.

Reservations: Reservations will be held for a maximum of 3 working days.

Refunds/Exchanges: We do not refund tickets, (unless the show is cancelled or there is a major change to the production) so please check carefully when booking. We will exchange tickets for another performance of the same production, if available, or, if we have sold out we will offer to resell your tickets; however we offer no guarantee of sale. In both instances 48 hours notice is required and there is a fee of £2.00 per ticket.

Changes: This brochure is correct at time of printing. The Everyman Theatre reserves the right to make alterations to the programme, prices and/or casting.

Late Arrivals: Every effort will be made to admit latecomers as soon as a suitable break occurs, but admission is not guaranteed.

Babies/Toddlers: Theatre visits are not suitable for children under two years, except for shows aimed at children. Children under 5 will not be admitted to performances unless the performance is indicated with a C symbol in the brochure. Children under 12 will not be admitted without a parent or guardian. Booster seats are available in the stalls foyer for younger children sitting in Stalls and Circle levels.

Parking: The nearest car park is the Regent Arcade multi-storey on Regent St, open from 8.00am-00.30am. Please note: the car park will close to incoming traffic at 8.00pm. Arrive after 5.30pm: £2.50. Arrive before 5.30pm: normal hourly charges apply to your stay. Customers can also pay online for parking before or up to 24 hours after leaving car park at www.cheltenham.gov. uk/parking.

Please note: There is no wheelchair access from the Regent Arcade car park when the Regent Arcade shopping centre is closed.

Outside pantomime season, the suggested coach drop-off and pick-up point is Royal Well Bus Station, but waiting time is limited to 15 minutes.
