Roald Dahl’s classic tale follows the adventurous, young James and his friends - Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybird and Earthworm. Beginning at the end of the story, like all great tales do, James and his friends are living in the giant peach stone in Central Park, New York, but the real story lies in how they got there, all the way from the White Cliffs of Dover.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and so memorably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic 1961 film, is being given a new lease of life as a stage play with music in a sparkling, sophisticated, new production starring Emily Atack (The Inbetweeners, Dads Army) as Holly, Matt Barber (Downton Abbey) as Fred and Victor McGuire (the sit-coms Trollied and Bread) as Joe Bell.

Evenings Tue to Thu 7pm Matinees Wed & Thu 2pm, Fri 10.30am King’s Theatre

Orphan James Henry Trotter was sent to live with his evil aunts, Spiker and Sponge, after his parents were killed in a tragic rhinoceros accident. Just when James thinks he will never be allowed to have fun again he meets an old man who gives him a bag containing the ingredients for the strongest magic potion in the world. When James accidentally spills it near the old peach tree in his aunts’ garden the most marvelous things start to happen and he begins the greatest adventure of his life. Join James and his new found insect friends on their extraordinary journey fraught with enemies, dangers and excitement, which will take them halfway around the world in a giant peach full of friends, music and laughter.

Boasting a superb cast and marking the final summer production from artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, Measure for Measure is a wickedly black comedy of secret identities, sexual politics and manipulation. The production features stellar performances from Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincent and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo.

Simmering with both violence and comedic irony, Simon Godwin’s Richard II features a tour de force performance from Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey, Philomena) in the title role. A production that delves into the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it, the rich colours and lavish costumes of this sumptuous historical masterpiece transfer superbly to the big screen.

CURTIS STIGERS

Fri 15 July

Wed 20 July

The suave sophistication, fabulous presence and sheer musicality of the singer and saxophonist completely stunned us last year as Curtis Stigers saluted Frank Sinatra. Now he will play a full concert with his top class US Band. That wonderfully luxurious voice, allied to superb phrasing and musicality, always swinging, always on the button; make him one of the greatest jazz singers of our age.

The Norwegian saxophonist’s haunting sound has been a signature of the leading European record label, ECM for the last fifty years. Nothing can prepare you for the sheer beauty and power of his saxophone tone: pure, keening; sharp-edged and crystalline.

Tonight he’s back with jazz-rock fusion, and a band that’s widely recognised as one of the best he’s ever had playing with fire, finesse and freewheeling interplay, with McLaughlin’s guitar chops undimmed. Jeff Beck recently called him “the best guitarist alive”. A very special concert for Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.

Following his sold-out show in 2015, the undisputed king of boogie boogie, swing and r’n’b is back. This year, Jools and his star-studded band will be joined by Gilson Lavis, with special guests Pauline Black & Arthur “Gaps” Hendrickson from The Selector and guest vocalists Ruby Turner & Louise Marshall. West Germany, 1969. Charismatic Willy Brandt has been elected Chancellor. When Brandt ‘dares more democracy’, his own party conspires, plots and tries to destroy him. As his enemies tighten the noose around his neck, Brandt believes the only man he can truly trust is Gunter Guillaume, his devoted personal assistant. Dickens considered his novel, A Tale Of Two Cities the best story he had ever written. Interweaving one family’s intensely personal drama with the terror and chaos of the French Revolution, it is an epic story of love, sacrifice and redemption amidst horrific violence and world changing events.

Ghost Dances is Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece, and possibly the most popular work in Rambert’s history. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic “ghosts” – interrupts the daily lives of a series of ordinary people. Inspired by Latin American celebrations of the Day of the Dead and the bewitching rhythms of traditional songs, it’s a moving, intensely human work, revived here for the first time in 13 years.

Alongside this classic are two new pieces from Rambert. Tomorrow uses dance to tell the story of Macbeth, and reveal the dark desires that lead a man to murder. Frames creates a show-within-a-show, as dancers use metal poles to form shapes, structures and spaces which, quite literally, frame their dancing in a different light.

It tells the tale of the young sailor Billy, who radiates goodness and beauty, provoking the envy and desire of the Master at Arms who is intent on Billy’s destruction. A Puccini double-billing begins with noir thriller Il tabarro (The Cloak) about a wife who has taken a lover, driving her jealous husband to murderous despair. Variety is alive and well at the King’s next Spring!

There’s a certain poetic justice in the fact that Danza Contemporánea de Cuba was founded the same year as the 1959 Revolution. It has since become the nation’s flagship contemporary dance troupe with a hybrid, hothouse style that is a pungent blend of Afro Caribbean rhythms, jazzy American modernism and inflections from European ballet.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Don’t miss this truly unique show featuring the one and only Allan Stewart and friends in an evening chock full of comedy, music and entertainment. Following the huge sell-out success of The Perfect Murder and Dead Simple, the thrilling work of multi-million selling author Peter James returns to the King’s with the world premiere production of Not Dead Enough.

Following a critically acclaimed season at the National Theatre, Jane Eyre comes to Edinburgh. This innovative re-imagining of Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece is a collaboration between the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic and is directed by Sally Cookson.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre

On the night Brian Bishop murdered his wife, he was sixty miles away, asleep in bed. At least that’s what he claims but all the evidence confronting Detective Superintendent Roy Grace suggests he’s guilty as sin. As Grace also continues to deal with the mysterious disappearance of his own wife, he starts to dig a little deeper into the thrilling case and it soon becomes clear that love can be a dangerous thing... Not Dead Enough is the third novel in the award-winning Roy Grace series and the third play in his multi-million selling stage franchise. James has been acclaimed as “one of the most fiendishly clever crime fiction plotters” (Daily Mail) and his brilliant Roy Grace novels have sold over 17 million copies worldwide. James is the 2016 recipient of crime writing’s highest honour, the Diamond Dagger.
