A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends: Tchaikovsky’s sublime adaptation of Pushkin’s masterpiece is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas. Director Oliver Mears (Director of Opera, The Royal Opera) teams up with award-winning designer Annemarie Woods, setting this hopelessly romantic opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016) sings Tatyana, while Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin.

This personal musical inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences shows the collective defiance of a community facing the demise of the shipbuilding industry alongside a poignant and moving romantic tale of childhood sweethearts and the adults they grew up to become. At Sting’s recent visit to Edinburgh he was presented with a copy of Ian MacDougall’s Voices of Leith Dockers. He said “When the guy gave me this book, it was wonderful. I recognise these people from growing up. They had such pride in their work. That is what I wanted to bring to this play” Featuring awe-inspiring and impressive set by award-winning 59 Productions, The Last Ship is the UK and Ireland premiere of Sting’s empowering new musical.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer shot to fame with The Comic Strip Presents… and as Vyvyan and Neil in the massive cult classic The Young Ones. They co-star in this hilarious new comedy about the actor’s life, which they have also co-written. Gary Savage and Hugh Delavois were students at RADA together. Now in their sixties, they meet in an Icelandic wasteland, on the set of a fantasy movie. Hugh has had a plodding career but has landed the role of Vulcan’s butler – a small but regular role – and he’s making his seventh film for the franchise. Gary is a one-time Hollywood A-lister who has fallen on lean times, and is playing a guest monster with four hours in make-up and one word in the script. Sparks fly inside the trailer as old wounds are opened and outside things are not going to plan either: the director’s gone AWOL, the catering truck’s on the wrong side of the of a ravine, and the volcanic activity is growing more and more lively by the minute...

Winning no less than seven Academy Awards, including best screenplay, the 1998 film of Shakespeare in Love, starring Judi Dench, Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow, became an instant classic. Adapted by Lee Hall for a triumphant West End run, this epic Elizabethan extravaganza is exuberant, witty, funny, and a beautiful homage to love, art, and theatre itself. Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block... the deadline for his new play - a comedy called Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter - is fast approaching; he’s struggling to finish the first line of a sonnet and he’s in dire need of inspiration. Then he meets the beguiling Viola de Lesseps, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant. Viola is prepared to do anything – including risking the regal disapproval of Queen Elizabeth I - to fulfil her illicit dream of performing on the London stage and pursuing a passionate affair with the greatest playwright of the age. In the same room, many decades apart, three parallel stories unfold. As they do, the room transforms and the characters are transported to a bustling city, a dense forest, an opulent garden and an arid plain. It’s possible that too many of their dreams are coming true… Life is a Dream is a spectacular new show from Kim Brandstrup who made the award-winning Transfigured night for Rambert in 2015. The show combines lyrical dancing from Rambert’s brilliant ensemble, a symphony orchestra playing the rich music of Witold Lutosławski and stunning imagery from filmmakers the Quay Brothers. It explores eternal desires that feel particularly relevant to today’s world: the longing for an authentic experience, and the need to dream.

Cinderella Sat 8 to Sun 30 December Festival Theatre

The ultimate spectacle. Primary colours that burst out of the darkness. Billowing ball gowns whisking you into a magical world. And Prokofiev’s irresistibly melodic score showing well-loved characters in a whole new light – performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella is everything you adore about the classic fairy tale – made fresh, funny and touching. We meet Cinderella at the saddest of times, then see her taken for granted by her wicked stepmother and two nasty stepsisters. But there’s no time for despair: Cinderella’s fairy godmother is casting spells of dressmaker spiders, magical roses and a very special glass slipper. Will love conquer loneliness, and light chase away the dark? Be part of the spectacle, and rediscover this classic tale. Devised by our artistic director for Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2007, Scottish Ballet staged the European premier of Cinderella to widespread acclaim in 2015.
