[ Editor's welcome ]

Plenty to celebrate Wow! 2019 was a fantastic year for Mini fans. Our beloved Minis were well and truly spoilt with a number of special 60th anniversary events and extra-special attractions at annual shows. We had a blast and we hope you enjoyed it all too. Then there was the additional special 50th anniversary of The Italian Job film which meant we had even more reason to get out and about in our Minis. So what's in store for Mini fans in 2020? Don't worry – there are still many events to enjoy (see our Event Diary on page 18). Significant anniversaries in 2020 include 60 years of the Countryman and Traveller, the 30th anniversary of the RSP Mini Cooper, 50 years of the Mk3 Cooper S. Also, on 4 October, we will lament 20 years since the last Mini rolled off the Longbridge production line. I hope this issue will reinvigorate you after the Christmas comedown as there's so much to get stuck into, from the incredible story of a prototype Mini Moke to an Australian Mini Sunshine, lots of technical goodness and plenty of sunny photos from worldwide Mini events. Also be sure to check out Andy 'Ace' Harrison's the beautifully-prepared Mk1 historic racer. I hope you enjoy the issue and I wish you a very happy new year.

What’s happening in the wonderful world of Mini?

Paddy Hopkirk MBE receives awards Mini racing and rally legend Paddy Hopkirk MBE was recently acknowledged with two prestigious accolades. Paddy, who lives in Buckinghamshire, was inducted into the Bucks and Milton Keynes Sporting Hall of Fame at the 14th annual Bucks & MK Sport Awards. He follows Olympic legends Sir Steve Redgrave CBE and Greg Rutherford MBE, and Paralympic hero Sophie Christiansen CBE. He was acknowledged for his work locally, which includes supporting the annual Kop Hill Climb which raises funds for local good causes. He also works tirelessly for other organisations. He is a global Brand Ambassador for MINI, an Ambassador for the Institute of Advanced Motorists Road Smart, is President of the British Racing Drivers’ Club and supports the Wheelpower charity based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

He was presented with the award by the Lord-Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire, Sir Henry Aubrey Fletcher KCVO. Speaking to Bucks Free Press, he said: “I am terribly honoured and I didn’t expect it. To be associated with all these great people is wonderful – it’s terrific.” Paddy was also presented The 2019 Guild of Motoring Writers President’s Trophy, an award given for outstanding achievement in the field of international automobilism. Paddy said on receiving the award: “It’s probably the most valued surprise award I have ever had the honour of receiving, from the long-term backbone of the UK motoring journalists. I’m a very lucky old guy with a wonderful supporting family.” Paddy has always been very kind and helpful to MiniWorld magazine so we are pleased to see his generosity acknowledged by the industry.

South Africa Mini 60 celebrations The Mini’s 60th anniversary was celebrated by Algoa Motorsport Club with a Mini Revival Race Meeting on 12 October at Aldo Scribante Circuit near Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Minis have long been popular as racing cars in South Africa as they were built there by Leyland South Africa. There were three action-packed races at the meeting. Mini fan Robert Bingle told MiniWorld: “As I understand, it’s the first national Mini day in South Africa. I’ve already heard rumours of maybe another meet in October 2020.”

Minis gathered for races at Aldo Scribante Circuit.

IMM 2020 Germany The organisers of the 2020 International Mini Meet in Germany (4-8 June) report that, as well as a P&O Ferries discount already secured, there is also now a ferry discount available with DFDS for its Dover to Calais and Newcastle to Amsterdam routes. Look out for more information about ferry deals in the FAQ section of the website. A circus theme has been set for the Saturday evening IMM party. “We look forward to seeing not only clowns but also ring masters, acrobats and maybe even IMMers dressed as animals,” said Martin Ould of the IMM organising team. As well as event tickets, merchandise including stickers, a thermal mug and clothing is available to buy from the website: www.imm2020.com

FUCHS Lubricants Mini Challenge New rally teams are being invited to join the 2020 FUCHS Lubricants Classic Mini Challenge, in association with Clitheroe and District Motor Club. Challenge spokesperson, Jackie Parkinson, said: “2019 was the inaugural year of the championship and the competitors had a great season of rallying, socialising and generally having fun! Even though the Championship is new, some of the competitors have a wealth of experience and are more than happy to help out anyone new to rallying or needing advice or support to progress in the sport. The camaraderie between the crews made the season all the more enjoyable and the fact that the crews

pull together and get any running repairs throughout the event rectified, means we get a high rate of finishers.” Eight rallies are planned for 2020 in England, Scotland, Wales and Belgium. “With scoring opportunity from five of the eight events, it means that if you can’t do all the events you still have the opportunity to score well in the Championship or if you just wish to do the odd rally to give it a go, we can advise on the best ones to try and see if you enjoy it,” added Jackie, who can also help teams with finding accommodation and refreshments throughout the day of the event. She can be contacted on: jackie@classicminichallenge.co.uk

Small Car, Big Heroes A number of MiniWorld readers spotted Minis at the scene of a horrific terror attack at London Bridge on 29 November in which two innocent people and their assailant were killed. We heard that two Mini drivers stopped to offer assistance. Mini hire company Small Car Big City posted the following on Facebook: “We can confirm two of our cars and drivers were involved in the incident. The drivers, who showed unparalleled heroism when they aided other members of the public to apprehend the suspect are, Tom Gray and Stevie Hurst. It is with a massive amount of relief and gratitude that we can report both drivers managed to escape without physical injury. The threat was neutralised thanks to the rapid professionalism of the Armed Response Units from the Met. and City of London Police. We could not be more proud of the way our drivers handled the situation. We are enormously thankful to the emergency services and the other members of the public that disregarded their own safety to contain the situation - without their help many more could have lost their lives.”

Mini Cooper Register's Off Peak Run Report by: Jack Ward. Cooper Register's Off-Peak Run 2019, held in inclement weather over the weekend of 19-20 October, took in almost 250 miles of driving through the Brecon Beacons. With 29 cars signed on we started our run on a cold grey morning in Merthyr Tydfil, a few miles outside the Brecon National Park, making our way through winding roads, following tulip notes and answering questions along the way to the first stop. With one Mini breaking down, only 28 arrived at the National Park Visitors Centre for coffee and Welsh cakes. We then headed north through the town of Brecon and up to the Epynt Ranges. With this being Sennybridge Military Training Area and a live shooting range, we were restricted on the roads we could take so followed roads through the middle. The lunch break was in Beulah at The Trout Inn. My favourite road of the whole event is Devil’s Staircase, a single-track road where you will hardly see any other cars. It has a 25% incline and what seems like an endless amount of hairpin turns, with amazing scenery the whole way.

Then came the drive back to the hotel, firstly through dense conifer forests and then through a series of small villages to keep the mileage down and a more relaxing drive before dinner. Day two, saw us setting off to the north east of Brecon, with the majority of cars stopping to take a picture of a big rock in the middle of a muddy field for points to win the Routemaster Award. Our coffee break was at the gorgeous Llangorse Lake. On leaving the Lake, we headed to our final stop of the day and the end of the event, The Big Pit. Heading over Crickhowell bridge and a slight mistake in the route book most people found themselves en route to the high road, a beautiful single-track road with sheer drops and amazing scenery. On arrival to The Big Pit we had the chance to go 90 metres down into the coal mine and learn all about the works and how coal was mined. Winners of the Routemaster Award with a 100% score were Richard & Linda Sign, who received a trophy, local whisky and

Participants enjoyed stunning scenery.

Mini Matrimony James Marshall proudly allowed his daughter Rachel and new son-in-law Alan Ryan to use his 1998 MPi Rover Mini Cooper to transport them on their wedding day. “Rachel always wanted the Mini for her wedding car but the new Mr and Mrs Ryan hadn’t factored in the seat extenders and lack of legroom during the journey to the reception in Derry afterwards!” explains James. “But all made it safe and sound and a great day was had by all.” Congratulations from MiniWorld! A Moke abroad

Ecuador Mini event A Further to your article in Mini Scene [MiniWorld December 2019], during a trip to the Italian GP at Monza last month, the person sitting next to us was an Ecuadorean called Teo who has since sent us a few more photos from the Mini Club meeting at Cayambe. At least a couple of these should brighten up the Mini scene here over the winter months! Great magazine. Tony Jupitus Thanks for sharing Teo's fab photos with us and thanks too for the kind comments. [KD]

I spotted this lovely Moke, whilst on holiday in Portugal, which looks to be in remarkably good condition despite its surroundings. Hope its of interest to the readership. Charles Simpson

Sad story I never thought that I would fall prey to any internet fraud, especially not with something as big as a car. To cut a very long story short, I was duped by a firm in the Midlands using a fake résumé and photos which I now discover can be easily traced to other web pages. I would like to warn others that membership of a popular forum doesn’t necessarily ascribe authority and job photos should not be the only measure of ability. Nick Paice Hi Nick, thank you for highlighting this point. I'm sorry that trying to get your Mini restored led to you being duped out of your hardearned money. Hopefully your experience will make others think twice about believing what they see on the internet. I do worry when I see people mention where they and their Minis are based on Mini forums and on social media. People you meet face to face at shows and local Mini clubs can be a good source of information and can give recommendations for Mini traders but never give too much information away! See a list of Mini clubs at www.miniworld.co.uk [KD]

Britemax Resto Max

The Treatment High Suds Car Wash

The manufacturer says: Resto Max quickly and easily Tested by removes many types of surface problems from paint, gel coat, plastic or Lexan. It safely removes medium oxidation, hard water spots, acid rain marks, bird dropping stains, light to medium scratches and the 'ghosting' effect of decal removal. Resto Max has been formulated with a non-silicone lubricant to assist the effectiveness of the micro abrasives. Leaves a silky smooth surface, is easy to use by hand and does not ‘load up’ on buffing pads.

The manufacturer says: High Suds Carwash is economical, concentrated car wash soap with a pleasant scent. The special blend of surfactants and cleaning agents cuts through road dirt and grime leaving a sparkling finish without stripping off wax.

Buff Daddy’s verdict: This product is a light finishing compound, perfect for refining the finish prior to waxing or sealing. Easy to use by hand but has a short working time with machine so care must be taken to avoid dusting. It leaves a slick, glossy finish. £13.29 – 473ml £54.12 – 3.78 litres +44 (0)1342 893006 www.britemax-direct.co.uk

Buff Daddy’s verdict: First thing you notice about this shampoo is the neon pink colour! It has a pleasant cherry fragrance and is super-concentrated so a little goes a long way. It foams nicely, has great lubricity and doesn’t leave any spotting or streaking. If only it left behind some extra protection, to boost the underlying wax or sealant layers, it would have scored top marks. It is available in 12, 22 and 64oz. Great value. £6.47 (12oz) £8.82 (22oz) £17.40 (64oz) +44 (0)1353 676007 www.shipshapenorfolkltd.co.uk

[ Modified 1960 Morris Mini-Minor ]

A MINI F O R LI F E Andy Harrison’s first car was a likeable 1960 Mini-Minor which had been tweaked for a little road rallying. These days he has to keep it chained to a post to stop it biting passers-by. Words and photos: Patricia Käsehagen Webb.

28 February 2020 MiniWorld

ndy ‘Ace’ Harrison is no stranger to the Mini scene and certainly no stranger to the pages of MiniWorld. He started his motorsport journey at the age of 13, marshalling at Harewood Hillclimb, and was a member of the Shipley and District Motor Club. “Graham Brayshaw and his son Paul got me into Minis, I blame them every time I see them, which then led me to Shipley Motor Club and onto the hillclimb and rallying scene. Harewood was, and is, my favourite venue and has led to me sponsoring the championship; just my way of saying thank you for the start of my motorsport journey.” Roll on the years and he is now a Brand Ambassador for British Motorsport Marshals Club (BMMC), honorary member of the Mini Cooper Register and the British Mini Club and owner of dynamic historic motorsport business Acespeed Historic Motorsport in Shipley, West Yorkshire which he started in 1995. By 2000, with hillclimbing, rallying and racing events under his belt, he started competing in the Mighty Mini Championship. “When I started racing in the Mighty Mini Championship, in 2000, it really pushed the business towards motorsport and race preparation. The technical element of motorsport means we can interchange the skills into other cars, including single-seaters.” Andy’s partnership with the late Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams at Goodwood Revival increased awareness too. “Back in 2010, Whizzo contacted me and asked if he could share my car at the Crystal Palace sprint. We found we shared the same sense of humour and we hit it off straight away. From that point onwards, he would drop into the workshop, providing advice on set-ups and, in turn, we’d treat him to a fish and chip lunch at his favourite chippy.” This latest historic racer started life as a 1960 Morris Mini, manufactured in the first seven months of production. By owner number four, Peter Buckley, it had evolved into a road rallying Mini. Peter, and his friend Boyd Stokes, were both apprentices at Rolls Royce in Derby and had built the car up for road rallying in the 1980s. According to Peter: “In the early 80s 882 PKX was used for road rallies at local club level. With Tim Johnson navigating, we entered rallies in the East Midlands Road Rally Championship and quickly progressed from novice to intermediate to expert class.” The Mini wasn't very competitive in the expert class »

so they moved onto a MkII Escort and sold the Mini. It was put up for sale accordingly and Andy found the car listed in Motoring News for £270 in 1982. “It doesn’t sound a lot now but £270 was a lot then,” he explains. It had been his first car but little did he know that it would turn out to be his Mini for life. He recalls: “After I bought the car I did a few road rallies and around a dozen car events in the 80s and 90s but then the business and family started taking some time so I was just doing hillclimbs. I ran PKX at Harewood for two or three seasons.” “It sat around for several years after that. When my mate Paul Brayshaw came along and offered to look after the car for a while no money changed hands, no ownership changed over but we agreed he could use it for various events and maintain it accordingly.” The years rolled on and the MiniMinor was used in various motorsport outings and even Cooperised as an Almond Green Mk2. Work and family also took over in Paul’s life and the Mini ended up at the back of the garage. In 2016, Andy would be re-united with it. “Paul popped into the garage and started talking about it, mentioning

he still had the car, so I decided to take it back in.” Whilst Andy and PKX were separated from each other over those years he had had many successes with his well-known historic Cooper S racer, 72 ACE, which he had just sold to buy his single-seater: a Mk1 Envoy Ford Formula Junior. PKX was collected and the rebuild to FIA-spec race car began. “When I set about to build PKX I had a lot of ideas I wanted to incorporate. Roll cage, suspension and general build techniques have really evolved over the last decade.” He has a unique vantage point compared to many in motorsport. Not only can he use his experiences as a racing driver but also the lessons learned through preparing others’ cars. “Every car that comes through the door, no matter how good or bad, has a lesson to provide. I try to find something in each car to take away and learn from to apply to others.” He sent the bodyshell off to Endaf Owens, at Owens Fabrication, for all the cage, panel and painting work. “The cage is welded into the car and made to touch everywhere, rather than bolted in like 72 ACE, giving a stronger, less flexible structure.” The colour scheme, Dove Grey with a Yukon Grey roof,

is inspired by a 1964 1380 Wolseley Hornet that he used to own. “Andy Conreen at SJL Printmedia Ltd., who sponsors our racing, has provided us with massive support over the past 10 years. They’ve done all our stickers and logos, including those on PKX, for years. The door circles and numbers were done by Phil the Stripe Signs and Graphics.” With a painted shell and graphics at the ready, PKX was ready for the Acespeed ‘menu’ build. The ‘menu’ allows the Acespeed team to build every race car exactly the same. “We then

modify off-the-shelf items to Acespeed specifications. For example, our wheels go through a long process of getting further machined to get exact tracking, the Lockheed Cooper S brake master cylinder has an adjustable pushrod to allow the pedal feel to be modified, and even the grille has been filed out in one area to increase air flow to the oil cooler.” Acespeed will also take standard offthe-shelf subframes, carry out various modifications, and produce something worth 10 times the original cost. All the suspension is Acespeed-modified

as well, to obtain correct tracking, then it's all non-adjustable once set. Andy has added corner bars and overriders as they are not only striking but they have a purpose. “The car was built within the first seven months of production and is very light. We managed to retain about 70% of the shell during the rebuild, just replacing various panels. As such, we had to add the overriders to add some weight or otherwise it would fail scrutineering.” The ‘standard’ racing petrol tank, with its SJL Printing ‘Cooper Car Co.’ cap, is » MiniWorld February 2020 31

[ Modified 1960 Morris Mini-Minor ] always completely full before any race, to also add some extra weight. When it came to the engine he utilised Tom Bell at TBR Racing Ltd., based near Holden. TBR specialises in engine building and had already done three other historic engines for him. They also prepare engines for the Fiesta Championship, amongst others. “At Acespeed we’ve got the skills to build racing and rallying engines but, when looking for topend performance and consistency in racing, it’s an easier option to farm the engine out to a specialist. When you use a specialist, they will guarantee you a race engine at 120bhp plus. They’ve got the kit, and the dyno, to focus on a consistent output. Rally engines are far less complex, you can just put all the bits together and get 90-100bhp with good bottom end and torque.” TBR also rebuilt the gearbox, to ensure smooth gear changes. Built to Andy’s spec, the final result is a very torquey, powerful race engine with 135bhp at the flywheel. When it came to getting the Mini out

for testing, he took an opportunity to bring it to a test day at Goodwood. “We shook down 882 PKX at HRDC Goodwood test day on a gloriously sunny day and it never missed a beat all day. We just kept going out and tweaking this and that and working through the rear suspension set up. We now have an Acespeed setting for our rear suspension, in addition to our new Acespeedmodified anti-roll bar, that we can add to the Acespeed menu going forward.” So how does PKX compare to 72 ACE? “72 ACE was built by Richard Longman in the 90s, and is a fantastic car, but the Mini game has moved on a bit. first drive in PKX at Goodwood was amazing but very tricky. The set-up has become more akin to setting up proper racing saloons. Once we had found the sweet spot, though, it was amazing to drive and very adjustable to driver input. Whizzo was a massive help with this Mini with all the set up and advice. We used to take him with us on test days when we were setting up other cars, too, as he gave us really good feedback and we were able to get them set up quickly. He even gave me his helmet »

when he retired from racing so we named the car ‘Whizz’ in his honour. I will always think of him when I'm racing.” Since that HRDC test day at Goodwood, in early 2018, the Mini has competed in quite a few events, including Goodwood Revival, Donington Park Historic Racing, Harewood Hillclimb, Silverstone Classic and the Équipe threehour relay at Donington Park. “The threehour Équipe race has been our best run in the car, where it achieved fastest run in the race in our three-car team.” While most drivers only have to worry about their own car and their own

performance in any given race, Andy is always at the circuit supporting his customers’ cars as well. “Race prep is hard work but the race circuit is stressful. Customers pay a lot of money to be at a circuit to race. They arrive and drive and it can all go wrong in a heartbeat... and it’s ‘my fault’.” Case in point: at the 2019 Goodwood Members Meeting: one of his ‘most embarrassing moments in a Mini’ to date. PKX made it around four laps and then dropped a valve, entirely blowing up the engine. He did have success with customers’ cars to balance out the day. “Fortunately, the

customers’ engines lasted, which is a much better situation to be in. Keeping the customers happy is my priority!” Keeping the customers happy isn’t the only challenge either. There is always the case of the second driver who shares his own car. “Drivers ask to come with us. You need to allow a known driver to share a car at Goodwood anyway but I also like the team aspect of two-driver races. No two drivers are the same so that always makes things interesting. Two of the most well-known, stand-out drivers for me are Rauno Aaltonen and Whizzo Williams.” Sadly, Whizzo passed away suddenly in September 2018. Andy’s favourite story is when Sam Tordoff, BTCC touring driver, called in recently. “He was looking at the car and said: ‘Why isn’t my name on the car door?’ which was his subtle way of asking for a drive. We duly gave him a seat at Donington Historic Festival this year. We have had a few novices through our doors. We took Chef James Martin from novice through to a race win at Brands Hatch Mini Festival in 2014. We also helped Laura Harris, as she had a dream of racing a Mini, so we helped her get there, taking her from

novice through to a full championship.” So what’s next for Andy ‘Ace’ Harrison? With over 300 races to date, in a variety of historic racers, 105 of them in 72 ACE, he has taken home quite a few trophies. “I am now a full-time historic racer/rally driver in Mini, Formula Junior and Formula Fords and I am asked to race all sorts of historic race cars. I also share Kevin Bicknell’s hillclimb R53 Cooper S, which we prepare for him.” “I love rallying as much as racing but racing has become more of a job. The profile of what we do is very stressful

and there is a lot more social media hype with getting in the star drivers, etc. I started with rallying, with five seasons of rallying as a teenager. I’d really like to do Le Jog as I just fancy setting off from Lands End. I’d probably do that with the Land Crab. I really enjoyed the Northumberland Rally in 2018, where we took Whizzo’s rally car, 120 MNP; it was competitive but fun.” His dream is to race at Monaco in his Junior Envoy, which has been his favourite racing car. After that, he would likely retire from racing and just spend

more time rallying. “You don’t need loads of horse power for rallying, just a good handbrake and torque.” Having driven a wide variety of fast cars, Minis are still where it’s at with Andy. “My favourite will always be a Mini. Cut me in half and I have ‘Mini’ running through me.” Andy 'Ace' Harrison would like to thank: “Tom Bell at TBR Racing for patience with the power unit; Endaf Owens for a top shell; Tomos Lewis for the paint; Moss and Mini Spares for the parts and, finally, the Acespeed team for a top build.”

Ask m Email: mw.ed@kelsey.co.uk Post: MiniWorld Q&A, Kelsey Publishing Ltd, The Granary, Downs Court, Yalding Hill, Yalding, Kent, ME18 6AL, UK Tim Mundy has worked on Minis since the age of 13. In the 1990s he worked for Oselli Engineering and has been writing for MiniWorld for 23 years. He has owned more than 20 Minis and built two from scratch.

Problems with your Mini? Tim Mundy helps you get them sorted...

Keeping the original engine maybe beneficial when re-selling a Mini.

10" wheels always look good on a Mini.

Biggest wheels I own a 1988 Mini, which is totally standard, and I would like to ďŹ t a new set of alloy wheels. What are the widest wheels I can ďŹ t to look good without cutting into the bodywork? And which diameter would you recommend? It currently has 12" Rover Cooper alloys. Sam Woolley The largest diameter wheels that you can ďŹ t without body surgery are 12" and the maximum size in 12" is 5x12, i.e. what you already have. Moving up to 6x12s will require front end surgery similar to that required when ďŹ tting 13"

wheels. The maximum-width 10" diameter wheels that look good for road use are 6x10. Remember you will need to ďŹ t wheel arch extensions with any wheels over ďŹ ve inches wide. Personally, as a general rule, I prefer 10" wheels on Minis but, in order to ďŹ t them, you will have to downsize your front discs to 7.5 or 7.75" and purchase and ďŹ t calipers to suit.

998 or 1275 dilemma I have recently purchased a Mini and my intention is to re-live the

60s and 70s by tuning it up. I have a reasonable budget of £15k to bring the body up to standard – it isn’t bad to start with - and upgrade the mechanical side. My dilemma is the engine. I don’t know whether to stay with the original 998 or go for a 1275. If I fit a 1275 it will obviously alter the originality - but will it also affect the future value? Jon Johnson I have had a few similar technical queries recently on this. It is a difficult one to answer definitively. Obviously the 1275 will be a more powerful option, especially if you intend to carry out much tuning. You don’t state the age of the Mini or whether you are upgrading the suspension and brakes etc. – something you must do if much tuning is envisaged particularly if your Mini has front drum brakes. If you are keeping the Mini original, and the older it is the more important this is, then keep the original engine and tune that if you desire. Mechanical items are easier to put back to original. If it is an overall modified car then either engine would be good and the 1275 could well be worth more money. If you do upgrade and change you can always keep the original parts for later reversion if future buyers or legislation demand original or near-original specification.

Cylinder head I have a 1984 998 Mini and I have just completed a bodywork overhaul and would now like to upgrade the engine. The engine was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago so

should be in good condition for some tuning. I have a Mk3 Cooper S AEG163 head and I am thinking of fitting this together with an HIF44 carb and LCB exhaust and system. Does this sound as if it would work or, if not, could you suggest any amendments? Terry Rendle The AEG163 cylinder head was fitted to the Mk 1 and 2 Cooper S, the Mk3 S head casting number is normally 12G1805. Your 163 head is now rare as they have a tendency to crack between the valve seats. If you do want a 1275cc head you should opt for a 12G940 head which, in large- valve form (1300GT, MG Metro), has the same valve sizes as a 1805. Small- valve 12G940s can easily be upgraded to the higher spec by a machine shop. However, when a head from a 1275cc engine is fitted to a 998 it is necessary to machine pockets in the block to provide clearance for the valves. The engine must be removed and stripped for this to be carried out. If you intend going this far with the mods then tufftriding the crank, balancing and fitting a centre main strap, together with a camshaft upgrade, would make sense. If you are happy with the current bottom end of the engine and do not want to undertake a full rebuild then a modified 998 head with either an HS4 1½" SU carb or twin 1¼" SU HS2s would still make for a fun Mini with reliable 998 Cooper performance. Below: Cooper S cylinder head, like this AEG163 head, is prone to cracking and a 12G940 head is better for reliability.

Fuel tanks need to be stored carefully during a restoration.

RESTORATION CORNER

FUEL TANK During a restoration, whether it is a total stripdown or parts of the car being restored over time, quite a few items are removed and stored for a while. Where to store, and the conditions of the storage area, are very important things to consider. Often the atmosphere in the storage area can be damp and, if this is the case, extra precautions need to be taken. One vulnerable item which does take up a fair amount of room is the petrol tank. It must always be removed from the car when any welding or cutting is taking place and, of course, prior to removal it must be drained. In fact, draining should be considered even if the Mini is to be kept off the road just through the winter. This is because petrol can contain small amounts of water and, with ethanol present in almost all petrol today, that problem becomes worse because ethanol absorbs water from the atmosphere. Result? The water and ethanol settle at the bottom of the tank, dislodging any build up of residue, and rusting the bottom of the tank in the process. If this happens to any great extent the bottom of the tank will perforate and you will have a spare wheel well full of petrol. Even if the tank remains intact it will be very difficult to start the engine in the spring due to fuel degradation. The ways round this are to either drain the tank, or add a small amount of fresh fuel every month and run the engine up to temp preferably every two weeks or so. And if you are removing the tank to carry out work, drain it, remove it, vent it for a couple of weeks (preferably outdoors) and then seal the openings and store it in a dry place, away from any potential sources of ignition. If the tank has been sitting idle, especially if it has had ethanol fuel in it at any time, corrosion may well have already started and dry storage is essential to prevent matters getting worse. Petrol fumes can remain in the tank for a long time after the tank has been drained so never attempt to weld or cut into the fuel tank.

Mark query I have been looking to buy a Mini for some time and have viewed quite a few but not found exactly what I am looking for so far. I have, however, found a 1972 K-registration Mini 1000 that I like but it looks more like a Mk2 than a Mk3 which is what I thought it should be. It has sliding windows and door hinges on the outside, a Mk3 grille and Hydrolastic suspension. Could you clarify the various marks and dates for the Mini? And do you think from what I have told you that this car is some sort of ringer? Liam Hughes

The UK Marks of Mini are as follows: Mark 1 Mark 2 Mark 3 Mark 4 Mark 5 Mark 6 Mark 7

1959-1967 1967-1969 1969-1976 1976-1984 1984-1992 1991-1997 1997-2000

UK Mk1 and 2 Mini saloons have external door hinges. Mk3 onwards has internal door hinges. So, from a date of registration point of view, your possible purchase should be a Mk3 but, going by your description, it does seem to be a Mk 2. Although a complete inspection would be needed to certify it as genuine, I think it is unlikely that it is a ringer; it is the wrong way round for this; ringers are usually newer Minis being passed off as more valuable, older ones. I think it is a Mk2, which was not registered until 1972, hence the ‘K’ plate. There were some Minis like this and I can remember one that was local to me back in the 1970s. Before parting with any money I would advise you to have the Mini looked over by someone who really knows Minis so try your local Mini club.

Which gear? I am planning to make my Mini a lot faster for better acceleration and a more relaxed, higher cruising speed. I intend to fit a well-tuned 1380 but I am concerned that the gearbox will not be able to withstand the power. Could you tell me if there is a suitable gearset and diff ratio to give both fast acceleration and higher cruising? The Mini is on 10" wheels. Also what cam would be best for an ultimate road 1380? Steve Winton You can fit a diff for ultimate acceleration or for high speed

cruising but to achieve both there will be a degree of compromise. For Mk1 and 2 a higher cruising ps ctric petrol pum ele speed you will n for had a reputatio they need a diff such as playing up when a 2.9:1 which will became old. give a higher, more relaxed top speed but the acceleration will be longer-legged, i.e. it will still be quick but you will leave longer in the gears to build up speed. For a good, all-round diff go for a 3.44:1. It really depends on which is most important to you and how much long distance cruising you actually do. As for the gearbox, a well-rebuilt box and drop gears will cope with 1380 road work as long as you do not thrash the car all of the time; most gearboxes will eventually break if you do this. If you use the power a lot then straight-cut gears should last longer but will be noisier, which will not be good for cruising! If I were you, I would have the gearbox a nd diff professionally rebuilt with standard or closeratio helical gears, new transfer bearings with the tolerances set to the minimum and accept From 1959 until 1969 all UK Minis were fitted with that you may have to rebuild an SU electric fuel pump and this continued on the box slightly more often if the Cooper S Mk3 until the end of S production. you use the Mini a great deal. The pumps worked well, and lasted as long as Remember you can drive smoothly most other pumps but, as Minis became older and fast (where conditions are towards the end of the 1960s, the electric safe to do so) at the same time pumps did go wrong and the engine would, and it is more enjoyable! as you might expect, stutter to a halt, leaving Mini and occupants stranded in the road. Quite Below: A standard rebuilt rod-change box often there was a quick fix to get you going will cope with head, carb and exhaust mods. again and this was to get down behind, or to the passenger’s side of the car, reach under and give the body of the pump a good thump. Not really something that anyone wanted to do if they were dressed smartly but at least, in nine cases out of 10, the Mini would be up and running again. Or it would be for a while. I remember being taken to school by my father in his second Mini, a 1964 Morris Super Deluxe, and this happening to us on a slight incline. My dad had not heard of the ‘thump’ method but luckily, on the first occasion, he was giving Ken, a neighbour, a lift to work. Luckily, Ken knew of the method and we were swiftly on our way. The same thing happened the next day, at exactly the same spot in the road, so a new fuel pump was fitted later that day. Today there are still a lot of Minis running round on SU electric fuel pumps. New pumps and spares, plus rebuild kits, are still available from Burlen and many Mini specialists and an identical-looking electronic version of the pump can be bought for increased reliability.

Nicole splashing her way through a ford in the Cotswolds.

42 February 2020 MiniWorld

MiniWorld staff and writers reporting on their month in, under and around Minis...

Unlucky number 13 I am not a superstitious person but, with this many things going wrong as we approach the 13th year since I took ownership of Nicole’s V5, I am seriously starting to have second thoughts.

H

eadline news this month is that Nicole managed to make it north of the M4 without needing to pay a visit to Somerford Mini. I was worried it was starting to become a thing. Sadly that’s the only good news story for the old girl this month as it has been a rather testing period in our relationship. With 2019 being my 13th year of ownership, it was starting to look rather unlucky for me indeed. With another fantastic Cotswold Classic Mini Tour under our belts, during which she crossed the fords

both times, answering many people’s initial question of why she is such a bloomin’ wreck of a car, the journey home to Sussex became a little wobbly. The sort of wobbly on an SPi when you know there’s a lack of electric getting to where it needs to be, but just enough to keep things ticking over reluctantly. Something was definitely up. My fears were confirmed the following morning when I couldn’t even get a little cough out of the starter motor. The battery was as flat as a barn-find’s tyres. Swearing, and running to get on my bike to cycle to work, I ordered a

new alternator right there and then, thinking this would no doubt be the issue, as the fan belt was taut and hadn’t been screaming like I’d run over next door’s three-legged cat. So, in my hasty diagnosis, I had concluded the alternator had to have died. Naturally this was the wrong course of action and is a great example of why ‘less haste, more speed’ definitely applies to Mini repairs. Even whipping the old volt meter out would have been a good start and shown me that I had been a bit retail-happy. With deadlines galore over the summer I left it until the 11th hour to fit the alternator (starting to detect a theme here yet?) like 11pm the night before IMM. As you all know, the weather over the IMM weekend was not favourable and it was blowing a hooley, even in not-so-sunny Sussex. Could I get those alternator nuts to budge? Could I hell! At this point I was reaching a bit of a low; it had been a busy summer, with a new day job and house move under my belt, and I was kinda relying on Nicole to just do her thing and run like the beaut she usually is. Not so, though this was clearly my own fault for being disorganised. By the time I thought: "perhaps it's actually down to that battery" – you know the one that sat idle in the garage for 18 months and has had to be jumped a few times already – it was too late. I think, by this point, Nicole had had enough of my slapdash approach to Mini maintenance and was in no mood to play games. So even with the might of the Other Half’s sturdy Seat Leon, Mavis, she wasn’t prepared to even try and turn over on the morning of IMM. Or perhaps she had seen the weather

forecast. Swearing again, I unloaded her and packed everything in to Mavis and set forth for Bristol. I was a little bit gutted about this, the IMM being the epic gathering of Minis that it is, but at least I was able to get there, and picked up a new battery from the lovely folk at Huddersfield Spares. Any man points I may have earned for physical exertion while lugging it back through the mud and over a style were immediately wiped out by the flowery tote bag I was carrying it in. Back in Sussex I got the battery fitted and all seemed to be well. I had no problems with a couple of long drives to Dorset and then Devon for a flight to sunny Spain, where I could cast all thoughts of voltage to the back of my mind to chill on the beach.

After flying back into Exeter a week later, in the dead of night, we had an early start to get to the absolute highlight of the Mini year for me: The Legendary Grand Tour in North Devon. After arriving at a hotel on the edge of the M5 we found Jan and Stuart from Yeovil Mini Mania parked up and awaiting a tow truck after encountering their own technical issues as they tried to make their way to the LGT for the second time that day. I was absolutely gutted for them, as missing out on LGT didn’t bear thinking about. It’s the best run of the year for me, nothing can match driving round my home county with thousands and thousands of people lining the streets to help support the Children’s Hospice South West. »

Bonnet up: never a good sign.

The next morning I realised that this was my 13th LGT, having pulled a sicky from my summer job at Morrisons in 2006 to do my very first run as a passenger in James Cornner’s Mini, Bridget. We must have been half a mile from the seafront of Westward Ho!, on the Sunday morning when, without warning, the most horrible din came from Nicole’s engine bay. It was the sort of noise you can feel through your shoes. I killed the ignition immediately and coasted into a driveway, hoping that it was just the fan belt that had snapped and was slapping against the bonnet in its last throes. No such luck. Popping the bonnet, the belt was intact and there was no smoke or leaks of any description, so nervously I tried the ignition. Just the

click of the starter motor trying to turn, and jamming to a halt. Part of me hoped it might just be that Rover immobiliser being overzealous and refusing to release but I knew it was more serious than that. My fears were confirmed by our breakdown recovery technician from D&S Recovery, the aptly named Mr Angel. With it being a Bank Holiday weekend my options were pretty limited, especially when you factor in that I was meant to be back in the office in Sussex on the Wednesday, which only gave me Tuesday to play with. The only place open over the bank holiday weekend, for their sins, was KwikFit in Plymouth, who went out of their way to help, sourcing the starter motor and getting it fitted pretty sharpish. I just had to keep my fingers crossed it was only the starter motor that was crackered. But the more pressing issue of the day was how I was going to complete the LGT! I had just managed to catch the Minis as they left Westward Ho! but the rest of the Sunday was a write off as Mr Angel towed us to the opposite end of the county.

“I think, by this point, Nicole had had enough of my slapdash approach to Mini maintenance...” Back in Plymouth The Other Half’s mother had a solution for this, entrusting us with the keys to her brand new, 19-plate MINI Cooper cabriolet, which we have affectionately named the GerMini. A brave move, especially given that we intended to strap a giant inflatable llama that we had picked up in Majorca on the back of it... But she really did save the day, which meant we were able to enjoy Monday’s epic run out to Little Bridge House and the Valley of the Rocks, for which I will be eternally grateful. Though it does also mean I can no longer say a bad word about BMW MINIs! Back in Plymouth, though, and the comedown from the excitement of the LGT was made even worse by the news that the starter motor and new coil had been fitted, but Nicole still wasn’t

starting. The chaps there admitted this was now out of their remit, and I began looking at somewhere more specialised to look at what was causing the problem. With the bank holiday out of the way, I had more options. With a second garage briefed on her situation over the phone, and a flatbed ordered to transfer her across town, there was nothing more I could do but leave her to it and get back to Sussex. I had to be back in the office on the Wednesday, no ifs, no buts. So there was nothing for it but to embark on a five and half hour train journey late into the night, aboard four different trains, leaving Nicole in Plymouth in the hope that the mechanics at this garage would be able to get her going again... See you next month for the next instalment. MiniWorld February 2020 45

[ Engine preservation ]

The youngest Minis are now over 20 years old so it is now time to start preserving and conserving the parts that are no longer being manufactured, including engine blocks... Words and photos: Tim Mundy.

Preserving Mini engines and engine components

A

s Mini enthusiasts we are extremely lucky that, from 1959 until 2000, over five million Minis were made. Minis were popular throughout the production years and still have a massive, enthusiastic following today. Long may this continue! The number of Minis still in existence means that remanufacturing some parts is a profitably viable proposition. As a result, parts availability overall for Minis, both new parts and used parts, is generally excellent and far superior to many other cars manufactured during the same period. But there is no room for complacency as some parts are becoming rare. Going back ten to twenty years and more we, as enthusiasts, tended to take for granted the vast stocks of used Mini parts. They were cheap. In the 1970s I bought a complete 850 power unit for just £3. Minis were regularly being

scrapped and, for years, a lot of people made a good living breaking Minis. In the late 1990s, when I worked for Oselli Engineering, parts for the MGB started to become noticeably less plentiful. Prices began to rise on the rarer parts and some parts that had been cheap and plentiful only a few years previously became very difficult to find. Now there are a lot more Minis remaining than MGBs, and a lot more used parts, but already Mini parts prices are rising and rare parts are taking longer to source. Overall, for body and trim, we are well catered for, other than for many of the small-run LE Minis. The same is true of ancillary mechanical parts. It is engine blocks, cranks, heads and transmission casings where we have to be careful. There are very few longterm Mini enthusiasts who have not thrown out perfectly serviceable parts to make room in the garage. I too have

thrown out items that I now wish I had not but have heard of far worse things, such as genuine S blocks and cranks being thrown away; parts that could easily have been reconditioned today. Here we are taking an overview of the major power unit components. Starting at the top of a Mini power unit; the cylinder head. Standard small-bore heads [848cc, 997cc, 998cc, 1098cc engines] are fairly abundant. They were originally made in the largest quantities but the 12G206/295 998 Cooper head is getting rare, and original Cooper S AEG163 heads in serviceable condition even rarer. 12G940 9 and 11 stud heads are starting to cost a lot more too as good ones are used up. There is good news here, though, as 5-, 7-, and 8-port alloy heads are available new. Painted and fitted, 5- and 7-port alloy heads look much the same as cast iron OE heads. Mini Spares sells its own fully-built-up alloy 940 head and can make cast iron versions from the same tooling which, no doubt, they will do at the appropriate time. Block-wise depending upon previous work on the block, rather than overboring a 1275 straight to 1380cc for max power, owners should now consider going only to the next available rebore size which will result in 1293cc, 1312cc then 1330cc. This extracts a lot more miles out of an increasingly rare 1275 block. Today all serviceable Cooper S blocks command very high prices. The ‘£100 S block’, 20 years ago, will be more like £2000 now. 1275 non-S blocks are going up in price due to high demand and dwindling resources. The scrapping of thousands of Metros a few years back released a lot of A-plus engines but most of these are now fitted in Minis. 848cc and 1098cc blocks are more plentiful but 848s are thinning out. In the old days a block that was worn at +0.060” would often be scrapped. Today, they are often fitted with liners to return them to standard bore. Liners can be

4

Late model SPi and MPi (pictured) engines are quite scarce as they were never manufactured in huge numbers. They are still available but at a significant price.

re-bored too, vastly extending the life of a block. Some people do not like cylinder liners but most surviving S blocks have been linered and some brand new Minis and many Gold Seal reconditioned engines left the factory linered. Liners are actually made of better material than the cast cylinder walls of the block so they wear less, last longer and are also ideal for a highperformance or race engine. Liners should be stepped when fitted, i.e: the external diameter of the liner reduced at the bottom, and the block bored accordingly, to form a step to prevent the liner moving down in the block. The cylinder head prevents any upwards movement. On the block front there is good news in that Mini Spares is planning to reproduce originalspec cast iron S blocks; development is well under way, test engines will be built soon and hopefully they should be

available in the not too distant future. Moving on to cranks and rods: used small-bore parts are fairly plentiful. Large bore cranks are more in demand and less available. Original S cranks are

“Mini parts prices are rising and rare parts are taking longer to source” very expensive and have often been reground to the max. The good news is that both billet and forged cranks are available brand new in varying strokes; these are S cranks and cost around £2000 though. Nice, if you can afford it! On to rods and standard good condition 998 rods can be found fairly easily and cheaply with the later, press-fit 998s fetching a premium. Used 1275 rods, especially A-plus rods, are around and

ultra-light and strong specialist S rods are available too, at a premium. Original S rods do turn up but again are not cheap. It is not just engines and engine components that need to be conserved. Transfer casings and gearboxes are endangered species too. A-plus components are fairly plentiful but A-series transfer casings, magic wand and remote gearboxes are becoming vanishingly scarce, especially in good condition. The important thing here is to investigate any problem with your Mini as soon as possible so that irreparable damage is avoided. Be very, very careful if you are buying used engine components, especially rare items, for a high price. A lot of used major components have hidden horrors which only come to light during engineering work. And with all Mini parts, never throw away any part that might be of use to another Mini owner as prices now justify the storage space! MiniWorld February 2020 47

[ Engine preservation ]

6

7

To preserve blocks re-boring should only ever really be done to the next size at which the block will ‘clean’ and be useable.

8

When +0.060” standard rebore size has worn out, the block can be fitted with liners to take the capacity back to the original, standard size. Engine blocks bored to 1380cc can be linered too.

9

Mini crankshafts need to be preserved too. They wear on the big end and main bearing journals and can be ground undersize. Wear on the crank ‘nose’ is much more serious. This one pictured is a good condition one.

10

A problem with 1275 engines, and A-plus cranks in particular, is slight movement of the flywheel on the crankshaft nose. This can result in the flywheel micro-welding itself to the crank and causing serious damage, sometimes making flywheel removal very difficult or even impossible to carry out.

48 February 2020 MiniWorld

A 1275cc A-plus block bored to 73.5mm diameter (1380cc); a popular way to gain ccs and a bit more power. Today it would be more prudent to bore to 1293cc so that there are two more standard bore sizes available for future rebuilds.

11

This is a slightly affected 1275 A-series crankshaft. This example is able to be reused with a little tidying up.

12

13

This is a 15,000-mile 998 crank. The journals are excellent and do not need re-grinding but, unfortunately, the crank is scrap due to a huge amount of wear on the primary gear section of the nose. Some wear can be overcome by re-bushing the primary gear but this example is well beyond that. A real shame!

14

15

With all Mini cranks, apart from nitrided S cranks, it is worth having the crank tufftrided. This process will harden the crank and is generally carried out on tuned engines. A tufftrided crank will wear considerably less than the standard factory-spec crank and therefore will last a lot longer before needing a regrind.

16

Another thing that is good for longevity, as well as making for a smoother running engine, is component balancing.

The majority of cranks can be saved by regrinding to the next undersize. If buying a replacement used crank it is vital to determine the current journal sizes before parting with money.

After grinding and tufftriding, crank journals need to be polished. If there is no measurable wear on the original journals polishing alone will suffice. If there is any appreciable wear, or ovality, of any of the journals the crank must be re-ground.

17

Piston availability is good for Minis, both for factory standard pistons and aftermarket performance pistons. pistons. This is a 998 A-plus flat-top piston for a press-fit rod, from around 1987 onwards. It is a good high-performance piston too.

18

Sometimes the damage has gone too far and the component cannot be salvaged.

[ Engine preservation ]

19

1275 engines, both S and non S A-series and A-plus, have the advantage of new crankshafts being available. Both forged and billet cranks are available if your budget will stretch. New ultra-highperformance rods are available for 1275cc engines too.

21

A 12G940 with a small crack in the chamber. Sadly, this is sufficient to render the cylinder head scrap. The damage was undetectable before bead blasting.

20

Some Mini cylinder heads are also becoming harder to find and this is made worse by the fact that quite a few are not salvageable. It is therefore very important to buy the correct head for your Mini's engine. This is the 12G295 more ‘open’ chamber design fitted to the 998 Mini Cooper and MG1100. These are now becoming scarce.

22

Localised damage and/or erosion to valve seats can easily be repaired by fitting valve seat inserts. These are used for the exhaust valves when converting to unleaded fuel use but can also be fitted to inlet valves in the appropriate size.

24

The same is true of gearbox casings, especially magic wand and remote-shift casings. They must now be treated as precious commodities. At the moment the internals of most Mini boxes are readily available as many parts are remanufactured.

50 February 2020 MiniWorld

23

Transfer gear casings, particularly A-series smaller idler bearing cases, like this one shown, are not as plentiful as they once were. Used casings need to be carefully inspected for wear.

25

Differential casings and gearbox casings were machined as one by the factory. Never mix and match them and, when buying, it is important to establish that the parts match up. If you are in any doubt, then you should consult a Mini gearbox specialist.

[ Australian Mini Sunshine ]

S U N LOV E R In Australia, probably the rarest LE Mini of them all is the Sunshine, built only between October and December 1977. Words and photos: Craig Watson.

orldwide Mini sales, as recorded by Chris Rees in his Mini book, show that the Mini sold 2,028,136 worldwide in the decade of the 1960s and 2,156,237 worldwide in the 1970s. So the 1970s saw a modest uplift in Mini sales, even if market share was down. In Australia however, cheap Japanese imported cars, restrictive Australian Design Rules (ADRs), a company in the financial wilderness, 20-year-old technology, and a market that wanted modern, efficient, reliable transport all added up to the Mini’s market

share in 1977 being barely a fraction of what it had been 10 years earlier. Leyland Australia, and indeed Leyland globally, was struggling financially and simply didn’t have the resources or the willpower to develop the Mini’s ageing design. In the UK, the goahead had already been given for the Mini’s ‘replacement’, the Metro, so, as far as Leyland was concerned, the Mini was dead after that anyway. In July 1976 the Australian Government introduced ADR27a, which stipulated limits for air/pollutant ratios in exhaust emissions. Leyland’s response, achieved

with minimum outlay, was to adopt the air pump and charcoal canister that had previously been used in the Special Export Moke of 1971-73, which had, in turn, come from the Austin America of the late 1960s. This was a cheap way of meeting the requirements but sapped the Mini’s little one-litre engine of the vital power it needed to remain the zippy little performer it had always been portrayed as in the media. Of course, one thing that could not be ignored with the Mini was its everpresent, and completely intangible, fun

Mechanically, the Mini Sunshine is the same as the standard Leyland Mini and the Mini S.

The Mini SS was the first limited edition Mini produced by Leyland Australia, and led to the introduction of the almost identical Mini LS as a normal production model.

The only form of advertising for the Mini SS, apart from a handful of test reports, was this poster displayed in dealerships. The 500 Mini SS models produced sold out in a matter of weeks.

factor. By giving the car a more upbeat appearance, a few mod-cons and a bit of an interior make-over, it again appealed to the young first-car buyer. The Leyland Australia Mini S offered this and became the most common Mini of the period. The cheaper alternative to beefing up the engine was to dress up the car and make it more appealing. This had been successfully achieved with the first limited edition Australian Mini, the SS of 1976. The SS was, essentially, a production Mini S with alloy wheels, fog lamps, metallic paint, vinyl roof, a radio/cassette

player, heated rear window, tinted glass and a few other little goodies. Always intended as a limited edition, only 500 Mini SS were built and those sold out in a matter of a few months. The success of the SS prompted Leyland Australia to offer another model, the LS, the following year. It was basically the same car, with a slightly shorter list of extras, but it proved so popular that production became permanent. Around the same time, a Sydney company called Auto Sun & Air, at 59 Whiting St in the northern suburb of Artarmon, developed a world-class

tinted-glass sunroof, the Autosun Sportsroof, which was designed by Mini stalwart Bill Buckle. What made their sunroof better than most others was that its rubber seals were connected, via a hose, to the inlet manifold on the engine, the low pressure sucking the sunroof’s seals in and causing a perfect, water-tight fit. When a button on the dashboard was pushed in, the vacuum was cut off and the sunroof released, so it could be slid open by hand. The Sportsroof ran on nylon sliders in stainless steel tracks, which meant fewer rust problems and easier MiniWorld February 2020 53

[ Australian Mini Sunshine ] operation as a result. There was also a small wind-deflecting screen just in front of the sunroof, which allowed it to be left slightly open during wet weather. This meant, even in the middle of winter, you could have better airflow through the Mini, which reduced window fogging and made the demister of the heater more efficient. OWNER PROFILE

In June 1977 Modern Motor magazine ran a story on the Sportsroof, which retailed for $395, saying: “The success of the roof has been such that more than 12,000 units will be exported to Europe over the next 12 months and orders have already begun to come from the United States, the largest car accessory market in the world.” According to information on the Buckle Group website, the Sportsroof: “was awarded an Australian Design Award and was licensed and patented in several markets overseas.” In October 1977 Leyland Australia announced the Mini Sunshine, at $4,395 including tax [UK £2779.89 at that time], with its main feature being the standard fitment of the Autosun Sportsroof. According to Motor Manual, in May 1978, only 360 were made. Apparently, the first Mini Sunshines had their sunroofs fitted by Auto Sun & Air but the later cars were fitted out at Leyland’s factory in Enfield, New South Wales; although the details here are a bit sketchy and discussions with former factory personnel have not made them any clearer. The list of extras on a Mini S, over a standard Mini, included: two-tone seats, three-clock instrument pod (with the

tachometer red-lining at 5,500rpm), Rostyle steel wheels and wheel arch flares. As well as the Sportsroof, the Sunshine also added to this list a special centre-mounted roof aerial, seats with colour-coded ‘Dot’ pattern cloth inserts and door cards (available as an option on the Mini S and standard on both the SS and LS), tinted side and rear windows, coach stripes and prismatic, reflective ‘Sunshine’ decals. All these extras for just $100 over the price of a ‘normal’ Mini S: you’d think that the Sunshine would fly out the doors of the dealerships. That wasn’t the case. According to the same issue of Motor Manual, sales were slow and, some five months after the last ones were made, there were still 50 unsold in the state of Victoria alone. It is therefore not entirely clear if all 360 were ever made. It has been rumoured that, because of slow sales, some had their special decals removed and were sold as regular Mini S models with a sunroof, rather than as a Sunshine model. Researching the model is not helped by the fact that there is nothing on the body, the compliance plate or in the vehicle identifying numbers that indicate the Sunshine is anything other

than a Mini S. The only way really to know if a Sunshine is genuine, as all the accessories were available at the time as options on the Mini S and still occasionally turn up for sale, is if you have the original purchase or insurance papers. One thing that is certain is that the Mini Sunshine was always a rare model and today is like the proverbial hen’s teeth. There is only a handful known to still exist so finding one for sale is a real rarity.

Survivor One person lucky enough to find one for sale, around a year ago, was Michael Klocovski from Wollongong, NSW, about an hour south of Sydney. In a bid to become Father Of The Year, Michael bought the Mini for his then two-yearold daughter Iylah. After all, his older daughter, four-year-old Allira, already had her own Mini so it was only natural that her little sister should have one as well. Michael’s father had Minis when he was young, and used to regale Michael with Mini stories, but Michael grew up with a bit more of a need for speed. He got involved in Mazda rotary-engined cars and now has an RX8 racer as his main plaything. He thought it might be »

Due to the lack of information available, Michael has made up a display board to explain to the public about the Mini Sunshine.

From this angle the only obvious differences from the Mini S is the Sunshine logo on the rear quarter panel and the sunroof.

MiniWorld February 2020 55

[ Australian Mini Sunshine ] nice to have a Mini at some stage. Shortly after Allira was born, Michael had a Mazda gearbox for sale. A guy wanted it but didn’t have the ready cash. He did have an old Mini he didn’t need so they did a swap: the gearbox for the Mini. It turned out that was a pretty special Mini itself: a Clubman GT. The Aussie Clubman GT is a far cry from the British 1275 GT and is, in every respect, a Cooper S in a Clubman body. Rather than sell the Mini on to somebody else, he decided to fix it up and keep it for Allira for when she is old enough to take over driving it. He spent a couple of years restoring and modifying the GT and has since won awards for it at a multitude of

“...the Mini Sunshine was always a rare model and today is like the proverbial hen’s teeth.” events. Of course, the lure of the Mini is hard to resist and, after doing so much work on the car, Michael took quite a liking to it and has even had it out on the circuit at a few track days. It is not surprising, then, that when daughter number two came along, he thought he should get her a Mini as well; one that he could play with, of

course. Ever since reading about the Mini Sunshine in a magazine, some years ago, he thought that would be the ideal model to complement the GT. Of course, finding one wasn’t going to prove easy. He researched this elusive model and bought every accessory for it that came up for sale from stickers, to interior trim, to new seals for a

A new steering wheel design was introduced in 1976 for all Minis and Mokes. The Mini Sunshine had the same instruments as the Mini S, SS and LS, with the tacho red line at 5500rpm.

Like the Mini S, the Sunshine came with a pushbutton AM radio with a single speaker.

Non-standard carpet is a slight nod to modern comfort but will be replaced with a standard carpet when he does a restoration. Aussie Mini Clubman heaters are very effective. The two-tone door cards match the seat trim. Australian Leyland Minis had seatbelt buckles in solid, paired holders affixed to the floor pan.

The early ‘tombstone’ seats were made with a one-piece cover slipped over the earlier Mini seat frames. The polka-dot cloth seats were an option on Mini S models but were fitted as standard on SS, LS and Sunshine model Minis.

Prismatic Sunshine stickers are fitted to the bonnet and rear quarter panels. Standard Minis had blue bars on the Mini grille badge, while all the up-market models, Mini S, SS, LS and the Sunshine, had red bars.

sunroof: many of those being newold-stock. In fact, he got so many parts for the Sunshine that, when he did eventually find one, he was spoilt for choice as to which parts to use. As luck would have it, Michael found a Sunshine at the Gosford Motor Museum, about an hour north of Sydney, in early 2018. It seemed that the owner didn’t have anywhere to store it so put it in the museum while he advertised it for sale. That’s when Michael saw it and snapped it up. It had been in the museum only for a few weeks. He spent about seven months bringing the Sunshine back to its former glory, helped along by the large collection of original parts and accessories he had acquired during his search for the car. But he is not entirely satisfied. The exterior of the Mini was repainted at some stage and is not a perfect match for the original colour, so Michael

MiniWorld February 2020 57

[ Australian Mini Sunshine ] intends to set that right in the near future. As a result, he has saved the best stickers and other accessories to go on the Mini when it is repainted. Meanwhile both of his daughters’ Minis are attracting plenty of attention at shows and coming home with numerous trophies. The girls get right into the spirit of things, helping to clean the cars before each show and eagerly asking if they won a trophy as soon as Michael comes back Below: Engines were sourced from the UK and rocker covers on Mini S, SS, LS and Sunshine were painted Silver Birch Metallic to distinguish them from the standard Mini.

home. In fact, both Minis won trophies at the New South Wales Mini Car Club’s annual Show ’n’ Shine the day before we photographed them for MiniWorld. With only 360 Sunshines reportedly built, Michael has started a register for them on Facebook (search for Mini Leyland Sunshine Register) to try and find and record as many original Sunshines as possible. The Mini bug has well and truly bitten and he wants to get one to call his own. But he goes even further, saying he has decided to try to acquire one of each model of Aussie Leyland Minis produced. My Mini Every Mini deserves its moment of fame and so do you...

Stuart Swales' Modified 1991 Rover Mini Cooper My first car was a 1985 Mini City. It was burgundy, with a silver roof, and I loved it. I always wanted to fit a Zeemax bodykit, 7x13 alloy wheels and a centre-exit stainless steel DTM exhaust to it but I never did and always regretted it. So, 15 years later, when the opportunity to create my dream car arose, I grabbed it with both hands. I bought my 1991 Mini Cooper thinking it needed very little work to get it back on the road but how wrong 60 February 2020 MiniWorld

I was! It already had an ERA-style bodykit fitted and 7x13 Superlite wheels. After looking over it the Mini seemed reasonably solid so I made the deal and a few days later the Mini arrived at my home. I was like a kid in a sweet shop! Off it went to my dad’s workshop to begin the process of building the car I had dreamt of all this time. We quickly realised that the parcel shelf needed replacing so me and my dad cut out the old one and welded in the

new one over a weekend. Happy with the quick progress, I thought that the project wasn’t going to take very long at all. Dad had a good look over the rest of the car and that’s when my dream turned into a nightmare. I’ll never forget jacking up the Mini for the first time; it bent like a banana when it was lifted off the floor! The ERA body kit that was fitted to it had been a total bodge-job. It had no inner or outer sills left, only metal plates welded to the

floor and tucked under the side skirts. We quickly realised we had to dig deeper to see what other horrors we would find. The more dad cut away, the more he shook his head and shuddered at what he found. I almost lost all hope with it but my dad reassured me that it was only metal and everything could be fi xed. If it wasn’t for him the car wouldn’t be here today. In my dad’s small, wooden workshop we replaced the inner and outer sills on both sides, both door steps, front floor sections, rear floor sections, inner wing, both A-panels, the whole front end, scuttle panel, bulkhead section, rear quarter panel, rear valance, rear corners and more! It’s not perfect but the memories we created mean so much more to me than perfection. I originally bought the car for a project my son Lucas and I could build but it’s definitely a three-generation family project. Blood, sweat and tears have gone into our Mini and it was so worth it. After 18 months of work it was finally off to the body shop to fit the Zeemax kit and get some colour. After five months and many late nights with Jeff, at Bedford Auto Panels, the Mini was finally painted. Once it was painted and I saw it for the first time I was full of emotions as it looked amazing! Finally, »

The Mini became a fun project for the whole family. Left to right: Stuart, Lucas and Bill.

the car I dreamt of was one step closer. I’m lucky to have family and friends around me who were willing to chip in with support and handson help – I’m grateful to them all. Tich Chaplin of Little ‘n’ Loud Minis has been brilliant. He helped me remove and re-fit the engine and the exhaust system. Getting the engine running again was a great moment. I had already re-trimmed the interior with help from my mate, Lee. Optimise Automotive supplied the bespoke interior, which I set about refitting with Lucas. We also replaced the lights and brightwork. A friend and local glass

fitter, Dennis McCarthy, fitted the glass and headlining and, finally, the Mini was ready for its maiden voyage. It was an emotional moment when I was able to take Lucas and my wife Jo out in it for the first time. I was finally driving a Mini Cooper with a Zeemax bodykit with 7x13 alloys and a centreexit stainless steel exhaust system. It was a dream come true and it was finally mine to share with my family, friends and fellow Mini enthusiasts. I’ve had a few problems along the way. I managed to bend the crankshaft. I picked up a rebuilt 1275cc engine at a bargain price

and, with Tich’s help, we swapped them over and all was well again. I’ve changed the wheels to 7x13 JBW OS4 Turbos. I love them and they look so much bigger in the arches. I fitted Hi-Los to give it a much better stance and installed a new dashboard, the later magnolia clocks, a centre console and I’ve fitted LED projector headlamps. I’ve got Zeemax mirrors to fit next and I really want to fit a supercharger! It’s already ‘Little ‘n’ Loud’ so why not make it little ‘n’ loud, fast and supercharged as well? I think I’d better get saving. Our Mini really is a labour of love and I’m so grateful to everyone that helped but my dad went above and beyond. He is a total legend and I’m forever grateful that he motivated me to keep going when it got really tough. I love Minis as they are small, fun and totally brilliant. I’ve even had the Mini tattooed on my calf. I’m never going to part with it and now my tattoo means that it’s with me everywhere I go.

P L AY I N G S O L D I E R S W I T H B I G B OY S’ T OY S Bill Bell dreams of owning a prototype Mini. He is still looking but he now owns something even rarer, this prototype ex-military Moke! Words: Kay Drury. Photos: Jim Jupp and the archives of MiniWorld, Jack Daniels, Graham Robinson and Bill Bell.

M

ost Mini fans will know that the Mini Moke was launched to the public in 1964, after being turned down for use by the military. The Moke concept, however, goes back much further than that, to before the 1959 Mini launch. John Sheppard had been asked by Alec Issigonis to draw up the design for a new car over Christmas 1958, into the New Year of 1959, meaning that John largely went without his Christmas holiday! BMC realised that, with the advent of the Mini saloon, they would easily have most of the necessary components to make their own small version of the Land Rover, built by rivals Rover, which was doing well in the cross-country vehicle market. BMC’s would be much cheaper to manufacture and should sell well. The history of this, including details of the subsequent military testing, were covered in a two-part feature in the July 2014 and Summer 2014 issues of MiniWorld. “The official name was the BMC Light

Inter Communication Car,” explains Bill Bell. “Moke was an internal name. Moke is Spanish for mule, an ass, for carrying stuff around like a donkey. Moke’s a nickname that it was called inside Longbridge but ‘Moke’ stuck.” Amazingly, five prototypes still exist. “14 BT 16 has disappeared. We’ve got no idea where it is but think it could have been the donor for the original Twini Moke. One went to the RAF (Royal Air Force), one went to the Navy and the rest of them were kept by the Army. Most of the photographs we have are from the Navy. They slung them under helicopters. The one in the Haynes museum is hanging from the ceiling but that car was never slung under a helicopter because it was with the Army. The Royal Navy car still exists and is

on the road, it is regularly driven to Beaulieu, Brooklands and on the London to Brighton Mini Run.” The other two are not currently on the road but are privately owned and being restored. How did Bill come to buy his Moke? “I bought it in November 2015, from Graham Robinson. He’s a long-time Mini Cooper enthusiast. He now lives in Brazil but the Moke was kept in the UK where he used to live. He put it up for sale on the Moke Club forum. Somebody said: ‘You ought to buy this. You’re not going to get another chance to own a ‘59 Moke’. It wasn’t cheap but I don’t think it was a lot of money for what it was. We went thirds on it, Ian Sims, Trevor Ripley and I. We had it for about a year between us. I had a Series One Land Rover. I sold that and bought them out

of it. I bought their shares. I’ve always wanted a Moke but to own one of the prototypes, one of six built, one of five that exist, you’re never going to get that opportunity again, and it’s a ‘59.” Bill is well known as a founder member of the 1959 Mini Register so the Moke’s year of build is extra special to him. Does he know how Graham came to own it? “He got it in 1983. He was looking for some Minilites for his Mk2 Cooper S. A friend told him about a set of four Minilites that were in London so he went to look at them. They were on an old Moke. The bloke actually » Right: The Mini Moke was officially called the BMC Light Inter Communication Car for military purposes. It was certainly lightweight as demonstrated here.

Left: Petrol tank at rear with spare wheel. This demonstrates how little spare space there was for carrying additional items in the vehicle. The Moke wears the number plate 14 BT 18, which was assigned by the Army. It is thought that it was originally 14 BT 17 and was accidentally swapped with the number plate of another prototype Moke.

This is a SU PD fuel pump which was fitted next to the petrol tank and behind the rear seat.

wanted to sell the whole thing, Moke and wheels. Graham recognised that it was no ordinary Moke yet didn’t quite know what it was. Almost out of curiosity he agreed to buy it. The seller thought that it had been made about 1961 and might have been used by the Army. However, he knew little else about it and, as this was pre-internet days, it was more difficult to find out just what it was that he had bought.” Graham found out eventually from the late Bart Vanderveen, a much-revered military vehicle enthusiast, that it was one of the 1959 prototypes. At that time they only knew of this one and the one now in the Haynes Museum. They subsequently found others. The Moke has an ‘SPL’ chassis number, Special Product Longbridge, the designation given to all prototypes. Bill doesn’t know exactly when the Moke was built. “It was either April or May 1959, so very, very early. There’s a record in the Army records that says it was dispatched from Longbridge on 23 May. Early photos of the Mokes are confusing as there seems to have been a number plate switch between Bill’s Moke and the one in the Haynes Museum at Sparkford, Somerset. The headlights are on pods and stick out a long way.

The Mokes were initially built without windscreens for ease of stacking for transport. They were later bolted on as they were found impractical without.

Mokes stacked at Longbridge. In the background, you can see an A35 and an early Mini Woody estate prototype. “They exported them stacked. If you look at that side shot, they’re absolutely parallel those wings, so you get each one on top. If they could stack them, they could get 34 of them inside a Blackburn Beverley transporter plane. For transport purposes they also tried to put one in a special crate that would fit in the

bomb bay of a Valiant bomber but the Moke wouldn’t quite fit! The idea was to fly them out to a war zone, drop them out of the bomb bay by parachute and there they were, ready to go. It was never supposed to be a fighting machine. It was about reconnaissance. This is about getting people to left, right and centre.” Sadly they were turned down by the military because of ground clearance and lack of storage space.

This Moke originally had only brake lights and reflectors. Graham Robinson added the indicators, at a much later date, to satisfy MOT regulations. 3.5x10 painted steel Mini wheels with Dunlop D49 crossply tyres.

MiniWorld February 2020 67

[ 1959 prototype Moke ]

also thinks that this is what happened. Bill continues: “The two Mokes differ very slightly. Of the six cars built for military testing, three have blocks for the rear subframe mounting, as did the very first Moke prototype. Three don’t. The ones with the blocks are earlier. It would probably have given a bit of torsional rigidity but they made them and then decided they didn’t need the block, so

they got rid of it. So the rear subframe on the later three is mounted slightly differently. They dropped the block on the next three they built. This is one of the later ones without the blocks. This is newer, which substantiates our theory that the plates were swapped in error.” Does the Moke have the original engine? “No, it didn’t have the right engine in it when Graham bought it.”

The prototype Mokes would have had a 948cc engine, as the original Mini saloon prototypes would have had, which were subsequently downgraded to 848cc engines as they were considered too fast. Due to the much lighter bodyshell, the Mokes would have been even faster than the Minis. Graham Robinson built an engine of the correct specification for the Moke.

The Royal Navy Moke, SPL453, when owned by the Army and re-numbered 20 BT 30 taking part in the BBC Autopoint TV programme in the mid-1960s.

The grille is removable but was changed to a fixed grille on English production Mokes. Later Australian Mokes used a removable grille. The prototype Moke grille is not quite the same as that of the later, removable grilles.

68 February 2020 MiniWorld

He told us what he did: “When I bought the Moke, around 1983, the seller told me that he had fitted an 848cc engine and gearbox from a 1964 Mini Van that had been written off in an accident after only 400 miles. In stripping down the engine, I found that what the seller had said turned out to be quite true. It was just like new! To achieve a displacement of 948cc I sourced a new set of standard LC Morris 1000 Van pistons at an autojumble and a new 998cc crank. That combination of bore and stroke gives » Right: The SPL467-6012 stretcher car. This Moke was allocated establishment number 6012, but not a forces registration number plate, and used as an ambulance. The spare wheel was moved over to fit the rack, the original wheel mounting holes are still there.

G E T T I N G I T R I G H T: T H E D I L E M M A

Bill’s Moke has a standard early Mini steering wheel, which is incorrect.

SPL 446, photographed at Longbridge when it had a cast aluminium steering wheel, cut in half, a straight steering column, no horn push (the horn push was a button on the dash), no indicators, no stalk for indicators. Bill is planning to take his Moke back to how it was in these pictures: “We’re borrowing a steering wheel off of another one, making a sand casting and then we’re going to re-do all this to make mine absolutely right and take the indicators off. That’s the plan, anyway. "Indicators were added to this Moke to get it through the MOT in the 1980s, but they can now be removed. “They did that because they wanted to stack them on top of each other but the steering wheel was in the way. So they cut them in half. They later realised it was a little bit uncomfortable and not very good to use, so they ditched that idea” The original idea was to temporarily loosen the steering rack U-bolts and lower the column so that they could stack the Mokes. They had no windscreen initially, again because they wanted them to be stackable. However, that made them difficult to drive, especially on unmade terrain, so windscreens were bolted on later. All five that exist are absolutely identical, so they were obviously all done at the same time. It’s a kit presumably that they fabricated up.

It should have one like this, as used on the Mini prototypes seen right.

"Graham is almost certain that they wouldn’t have brought them back to Longbridge. Somebody would have gone out to wherever they were based and put them on. So it’s a question

of do you remove it and make it like that, or leave it as it is.” Bill will probably leave the windscreen as it is. “You can drive it around like this. Without it, it would be impossible.”

948cc. The 850 block went to a local machine shop to have work done on the journals in order to accept the 998 crank. At the same time all the major internal components were balanced. Whilst it was never going to be a high-revving engine it did mean that it ran like a sewing machine, and still does to this very day unless Bill tells us otherwise.” Bill agrees: “It doesn’t half go. Runs out of puff at about 70 but that’s enough on crossplies. Goes like stink,” he laughs. Graham also changed a few other

things to make it more closely resemble a BMC prototype built in 1959, including a metal rocker cover cap, brass top plunger for the SU carb, flat thermostat housing cover, radiator with top-hose connection at the front end of the header tank rather than inset, cast iron water pump with grease nipple, radiator steady plate with single fixing to thermostat housing, PD petrol pump fitted behind the rear seat, brass coolant drain tap on rear of block and an SU carb needle more suited to a

948cc low-compression engine. One thing Bill thinks that Graham got wrong was the air filter housing, which is an Austin A35 airbox: “The very first prototype, SPL 433, had the A35 type which is where I think Graham got the information from to fit it to SPL466 as he had no later under-bonnet photographs at the time. But I’m 99% sure it should have a Mini one, pointing to the radiator. If these were built April/May, normal production was just about under way and they had the early air filters.” In hindsight, Graham now agrees with this. With the photos and measurements taken from the Moke currently in the Haynes Museum, Graham had a new front bumper, a new windscreen and a new petrol tank made. The bonnet is a replacement one from a production Moke but Graham changed the hinges to replicate the prototype version, although it should really have an ‘X’braced bonnet rather than ‘H’-braced one. The instrument panel housing on the prototype Moke differed to that fitted on the production Moke. This car has a production version but Graham had the mounting brackets changed. The steering wheel on the Moke should be the same as those fitted to the prototype Minis, with the two spokes in a straighter line, rather than offset as on the Mk1 Mini. Graham wasn’t able to find one of those so it still has an early Mini wheel. As the seats on the prototypes were bench seats, the hand brake mechanism was mounted further forward than the saloon’s, so Graham bought two longer Austin/Morris 1100 handbrake cables and moved the quadrant locating ‘button’ along a little before re-clamping it in position. What happened to the Moke after the military testing? “They were de-mobbed in November 1963, so it came out of the Army then. We assume it went back to Longbridge and they just logged it off.” The Haynes one seems to have been at the Army School of Transport, Longmoor, in 1968 with the ex-Navy Moke, by then re-numbered for the army as 20 BT 30. From there it was given as a gift to the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley, before going to the Haynes Museum, but Bill doesn’t know what happened with his. “Did the Army sell it off? Did it go to a surplus sale? They do that, don’t they? They do sell surplus Army stock so was it that? Somebody just bought it? We don’t know.” Graham tried extremely hard to find out all the missing information on the history of the Mokes, including talking to Jack Daniels, John Sheppard and John Wagstaff, and sent numerous letters to military personnel and

Left: The Royal Navy Moke was tested extensively with helicopters. “It’s the only one that was flown under a helicopter, so all the stuff that’s attached to the Haynes one is off this car. The Haynes one never went in the air. That one did.” Right: “A helicopter had a gearbox failure right on top of it. historians, all of which make fascinating reading. Enormous thanks are due to him for the information we now know about the military Mokes. Some interesting facts which he discovered were that the Royal Navy Moke actually appeared in the BBC Autopoint TV

series, by which time it was wearing the Army 20 BT 30 plate. It was a popular cross-country competition between the British Army Motoring Association (BAMA) and the London Motor Club in the 1960s. 20 BT 30 was mostly driven by Sergeant Bill Brooker. At least » MiniWorld February 2020 71

one Twini Moke also took part in the series, driven in different years by John Surtees, Jim Clark and Graham Hill. Bill’s Moke also made a guest appearance in the TV series The Brittas Empire. There are a few changes that Bill wants to make to the Moke, to bring it back to how it was when first built, but the dilemma is to decide how far back to take it. He’d like to take off the indicators, as they originally had only the brake light and reflector, but if he also decides to change the steering

wheel, he needs to change the steering column, so it would make more sense to do both at the same time. Then there’s the windscreen, which they didn’t have originally. However, he has a problem. Those changes would make it more difficult to drive and, unlike Bill’s precious 1959 Minis, this is one car that he drives all the time. “We do drive it everywhere. Any excuse. I’ll go and get some milk in the Moke and the kids all come with me. They love it. ‘Let’s go to the supermarket.’ I go in that. I

74 February 2020 MiniWorld

As 2019 was the Mini 60, I looked for months in advance for Mini 60 events anywhere. One day, on Facebook, I saw a mention of the Mini 60 in México. I made a comment that we might like

to go; Julio Sánchez quickly contacted me. You could feel his excitement in the emails on how much fun and how big the event was going to be. With it being hosted by the Mini Asociados México club, and headed by the Mini ‘patriarch’ Alex Jiménez, we knew it was going to be top-notch. Adding that it was going to take place in the beautiful town of Querétaro, not far from México City, the decision was easy; we were going to México! As my job with Mini Sport USA allows me to work while travelling, I planned on a week-long trip so I could see some of México before the Mini event. Rhonnie would then fly over for the event. As my goal was to see parts of the real México, not big touristy towns, I picked an area in the mountains for my few days before the event. I always enjoy meeting locals and staying away from big cities. When my Orlando to México City flight landed, I picked up the rental car and started my journey. As it was around 5pm, I figured there could be some traffic since it’s one of the most

populated cities in the world. I have driven in 21 countries so I should be able to handle just about anything. Wow, what an eye opener! I quickly saw why our Mexican friends suggested they should pick me up at the airport. There were four lanes of solid but fast-moving traffic, with no lines on the road, just random potholes. In my eyes, it was perfectly executed chaos as cars were changing lanes everywhere, but in total control and with courtesy. At first it was very difficult to get in the rhythm of the fast lane changing and flow until I found a rave radio station. The rave beat was perfect! I sat back, got in racer mode and actively participated in their traffic madness. When I left México City, I had a twoand-a-half-hour drive to the mountain town of Zacatlán. Once the highway turned into smaller town roads, it was very clear that México uses HUGE speed bumps constantly to slow everybody down. Some have yellow paint to warn you but at night, on unlit roads, the ones I hit at 45mph didn’t. After a few of these, I figured the amount I paid for the rental car had already paid off. I arrived at the hotel mentally drained. One thing I enjoy when travelling somewhere that I have never been before is to arrive in the dark and be surprised with the surroundings in the morning. The first morning surprise was the rooster directly across the street that gets up an hour before sunrise. My plan for the first full day was to see the town and then go hiking to some waterfalls. In town I came across an area of walls covered with many beautiful murals. The details, creativity, and stories were amazing! On the way out of town, I stopped for my first Mexican meal, tasty chicken in a bag. I tried to communicate to cut the chicken in half, as I only wanted half, so they cut the chicken in half and then put both halves in the bag. Oh well. The entire chicken, rice, sauce and some sausages were about $4 US [UK £3.10]. I drove 15 minutes south to the Cascadas Salto de (Waterfalls of) Quetzalapan. It’s a beautiful park with a spectacular waterfall. As there were

only about four of us in the park, it was perfect for taking pictures, hiking to the bottom of the falls and relaxing. When I was leaving and turning to go towards the motorway, I saw a big arrow and ‘Tulimán’ going the opposite direction towards a small bridge so I followed it. Wow! It turns out there was a much bigger park with many more waterfalls, miles of hiking paths and, once again, only about four people; priceless. It was a great surprise and a perfect example of where exploring takes you. I stayed until closing. The next morning the rooster let me know when it was 5:30. I got some work done before I left for the day and

then saw I had a flat tyre. Lucky for me, there was a tyre shop almost across the street named Roosters (just kidding). The gentleman there spoke no English so I used the universal language for a flat tyre; I pointed at it. With just basic hand tools, he had the tyre off, two holes patched, and back on the car in about 15 minutes. His speed and hard work were impressive. Then came time to pay. His English was as good as my Spanish so after unsuccessfully trying to figure out the amount due over a few minutes, he put on a big smile, waved at me and said "Gracias". Wait, what? He was saying it’s free and to have a nice day, with a smile! No way, so I took out a 200 Peso bill, about $10 US [UK £7.75], to get an idea of what he would want. His eyes got really big while he held a hand above his head as to say too high. He wouldn’t take it until I put it in his hand. I was blown away that someone with so little would work so hard and do it for nothing, with a big smile! He’s the epitome of what I was quickly learning about Mexicans. I later told this story to a Mini friend at the event. When I got to the part where we couldn’t » MiniWorld February 2020 75

Road Trip communicate on a price, he said: “So he didn’t charge you.” He went on to say how Mexicans like to help others and make them happy. I saw this everywhere I went. During my trip, I met some of the poorest to the very rich and they all treated me the same, genuinely courteous and with a smile. Please note that in the following four days I made so many Mini friends and had so many wonderful experiences that there is no way to mention everybody and share

every story in anything less than a book. It was truly one of the most amazing Mini and life events. Thursday was the first Mini day! I had to get up early to drive back to México City. I set my alarm in case the rooster slept in; it didn’t. I took a different route back to México City and saw some astounding landscapes as the sun came up over the mountains. When I arrived at the meeting point, I saw a very bright yellow Mini. I made it! The owner, Mario Orizaba, proudly

told me all about it. Two more Mini friends, Leoncio Espinosa and Noé Suárez, arrived and we were ready to start the day. I was curious why we were standing outside of a family fun centre until we went inside to see that the ground level was a big collector car storage area for Mini owner, Marcial Meneses. It was an amazing assortment of mainly American cars from around the 1940s to present. The four of us then hopped in the Mini for a tour of México City. We

stopped by Noé’s home to see his beautiful collection of five Minis and a perfect Renault A110 Alpine. Next was a stop at a Mini repair shop where I met everybody’s favourite local Mini mechanic, Óscar Villaverde. A couple of Minis showed up and it started to sink in that this weekend was going to be great! We headed to Marcial’s main automobile collection and were treated to Mexican pizza (Hawaiian, seriously) in his fully restored 1960s American diner that overlooked the collection; awesome! I hated to leave but I had a three-hour drive to the event hotel in Querétaro. The next morning I finally got to meet Julio for the first time and, after many years, Alex. With smiles and hugs everywhere, it felt like I was welcomed in to a big, wonderful family. I joined Julio, his sister Mónica Sánchez and nephew Óscar Rieveling, in Julio’s Mini for a drive to Chapa de Mota for lunch and to meet with Minis coming from all around. The small town was overly welcoming with a wonderful taste of México as they treated the Mini group to lunch. I was called up on stage, so I introduced and possibly ruined México forever with our trademark Ta Daaaa. I was also happily surprised to see a South Florida racing friend from the early 1980s, Pedro Vidal. Following lunch, a long convoy of Minis headed back to the event hotel. We had plenty of time to get back and pick up Rhonnie from the bus terminal but half of the BMW MINIs broke down on the side of the motorway. Luckily there were only two MINIs there. Road Trip open. Marcial had a Mini on a trailer, so he did a swap and we were on our way. Unfortunately, due to the slow speeds trying to limp the MINI back, added to the time to swap it on the trailer and roadside banter, we got to the bus terminal 40 minutes late! Julio kept saying as it was getting later and later: "breathe Mike, breathe". Unknown to us, Rhonnie’s bus was 35 minutes late so she didn’t have to live through the panic that I did while trying to find her at this HUGE bus terminal. Saturday started with Rhonnie

learning quickly that Mexicans love to hug and how over-the-top happy and friendly everybody is. As we walked around the parking lot, we realised that almost all of the 140 classic Minis were in amazing condition! We left the hotel with Norma Castro and Leoncio in his British Open. The first stop of the day was at the Bodegas & Viñedos De Cote. It’s a first class and picturesque vineyard with wine tasting and great food. That is where I learned again that taking pictures can be dangerous. My leg slid down a rock wall that I was

climbing, drawing blood and more than normal stares. The next stop was lunch at the Bocanegra Cava de Quesos (cheese shop) with a mouth-watering tour of a cheese cave. The Minis lined up on a big show field while everybody enjoyed lunch. The drives between these stops were very entertaining, with the humour of Leoncio and Norma. The laughter and smiles made up for the lack of Spanish and English. Following lunch there was a special presentation for Angélica Stierle Tijerina. It was a wonderful tribute to

Alex and Julio presenting Angélica Stierle Tijerina (fourth from the right) and her family with a tribute to her father, Edmundo Stierle Homsy; setting Mexican Mini history straight as he assembled CKD Minis in Mexico.

her father, Edmundo Stierle Homsy. Not mentioned in history books, and not known by most Mexican Mini owners, is the fact that Mr Stierle, under BMC licence, assembled Minis in México starting in 1960. That lasted until the Mexican government asked to integrate Mexican-produced parts so assembly halted in 1961 due to higher costs. The Mexican-assembled Minis are rare and surprisingly unknown although Julio has one; it’s a 1960 Morris Mini. He researched the history, found Angélica, and brought her to the event for the tribute. How do you end a fun-filled day? Obviously with the Spanish-dubbed movie The Italian Job, drive-in style. Already the event, people, Minis, and sights, well exceeded my expectations and there was still one more day! Sunday morning we rode with Keith Mainland, a well-known writer in the Mini world for his book Classic Mini Specials and Moke, and his wife, Angélica Fuentes García, who reside in London. She is known around the world as a top professional rally navigator. Between the two of them, we felt confident that we would make the four-mile drive to the Mini show. That was until we got lost, seriously! We enjoyed the comedy of a Mexican rally navigator trying to give directions to her English husband. Both of them were so polite but lost. When we finally arrived, the Minis were on display on a closed road around a park. There was a heartwarming presentation by the Mini Asociados México club of 33 new wheelchairs that they donated to »

Road Trip help those in need. Then it was rally time. We rode with Armando Jiménez and his wife Angélica Estrada in their Cabriolet Mini. As we headed towards the mountains with the top down, cool temperatures, and blue skies, he turned on the stereo playing Hotel California by the Eagles. As with every Mini trip, there is always at least one moment when Rhonnie and I look at each other and ask: “How did we get here?” This was one of those moments, kind of dreamlike, something you can’t plan or expect. The winding mountain roads and seeing Minis everywhere were the icing on the cake. The lunch stop was at a lovely tented banquet facility. The rows and rows of stunning Minis was mind blowing! Following lunch, everybody went to their Mini for a drone photo of the world’s largest Mini Ta Daaaaa! We rode back to the hotel with Leoncio and Norma for one final fun time in a Mini. The closing banquet was next. We found out last minute that the banquet theme was the 1960s so no problem with our normal attire! As with the entire event, the banquet was first class in every way. Following dinner, awards and the auction, it was time to dance. First was the 60s music, we felt like we were back home, and then the Mexican music. It was a lot of fun seeing everybody let loose and enjoy the night knowing they were at the best México Mini event

ever! Then came the sad goodbyes. This was different from our usual IMM and USA Mini events where we know we’ll see everyone the following year. With our Mexican Mini family, we don’t know when we will see them again. It looks like we’ll be going back to México and it can’t be soon enough! There are so many people I would like to thank who made this one of the most personable, entertaining and memorable Mini trips we have ever been on. Thank you to Julio and Alex who are superstars in every way, everybody who drove us around and everyone for being so friendly. You opened our eyes and warmed our hearts to México and its amazing people.

ini 60 Hong Kong took place on 9-10 November, 2019, at Murray House, Stanley Plaza, Hong Kong. Despite the recent social turmoil in Hong Kong, over 100 Minis attended the event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Mini, an iconic classic car that has been very popular in the former British colony since early 1960. The event was open to all local Mini enthusiasts and was organised by Automobile, a local car magazine with over 40 years of history, with support from Young Mini Club (YMC), Hong Kong Mini Racing Club and various sponsors, including overseas guests from Japan and Taiwan. C

lassic Minis United proudly hosted the largest 2019 Mini event in the US, celebrating the Mini 60, while marking the 10th anniversary of our internationally-attended events. It was held in Wytheville, Virginia, USA, 9-13 October. The host campground was centred within the many twisty and scenic mountain roads, allowing amazing drives in every direction. Like all CMU events, this was based on fun mountain drives with night-time campground activities. To celebrate the universal love of the classic Mini, we titled the event One Love – One Mini. First thing every morning, the Minis lined up in three groups, each headed by a Cruise Master. Every day featured unique roads and sights. Some of the roads are named for their complex and fast corners. The most exciting roads were the Back of the Dragon,

The Snake and Burke’s Garden. Upon returning to the campground after a day’s drive, the smiles and stories were nothing short of priceless. Mike Price, from Birmingham Mini Owners Club in England, was a special guest and joined in the celebration. It was his first time in the US so we were excited to show him around and explain how we do a CMU event. He quickly stepped in to help Minis with mechanical problems while, after some fast, tight, twisty roads in my turbo Mini, he quickly stepped out. In addition to the drives, we had our renowned scavenger hunt. Minis were

going in every direction throughout the quaint town. Then, for more Mini fun, as there’s nothing cooler than a Mini with big spot lamps blasting through mountain roads, we had a night-time ice cream run that led us up to the top of a mountain. While the Mini is what brings us together, the campground parties are all about the people. Everybody shared stories while making new friends. On Friday night we had a big Mini 60 party. The party included a swap meet, beer tasting, silent auction, catered dinner, 1960s fancy dress contest, and the International Mini Film Festival. The beer tasting was different this year as it included Tequila from our Mexican Mini friends, and Chilean wines from our Mini friends in Chile! I would like to thank the staff, members, many helpers, supporters, title sponsor Mini Sport USA, and everybody who came for making this event an epic success.

n New Zealand, October is a polarising month. One weekend the country migrates to the beaches; lounging in the sun, cruising the surf. The next, everyone snuggles up with their hot water bottles and reminisces about their brief encounter with summer. The one dependable aspect of October is Labour Day. For most, it’s a long weekend to get away for a family holiday. For the New Zealand Mini community, it’s much more. 25-27 October signified the 2019 annual New Zealand Mini Nationals. Everyone was watching 2019’s hosts, Tauranga Mini Owners Club (TMOC), in expectation. Who knew what the weekend would hold? Who knew what the weather would do? If past years were anything to go by it was fated to be a sombre, drizzly event. ‘Nationals’ is a weekend of community; a time where new friends are made and old friends reconnect; a time of bonding and camaraderie. Participants earn points over the weekend by competing in events. Accumulated points contribute to an overall score,

determining the weekend’s winner. 25 October rolled around when Minis from all over New Zealand converged on Tauranga. Perhaps the weather felt contrite for its disgraceful behaviour in the past. Maybe it took pity on us. Whatever the case, Saturday morning presented a magnificent spectacle. 224 Minis (a new Nationals record) lined up for the Show ‘n’ Shine under a blazing sun and clear azure sky. The delicious weather continued for the rest of the weekend, adorning

the celebratory atmosphere. With so many of New Zealand’s Minis gathered there was a broad range on show. Some unique variations included Gray Warner’s 1975 Morris Stretch Limo and Tim Neal’s Mini Jem. Two de Jouxs were also on show: Murray Sutton’s 1969 model and Warwick Robinson’s 1989. The de Joux was designed as a GT fibreglass sports car by New Zealand engineer Ferris de Joux. However, an even rarer attendant was Bernard Hull’s 1988 Ibis. The Ibis is a 1200cc fibreglass

monocoque New Zealand sports kit car. While the Show ‘n’ Shine judges assessed the throng of Minis, a crowd rallied to witness the rocker cover racing. The navigation trial commenced in the form of a scatter run, during which Minis journeyed to various areas of the Bay of Plenty to gather clues. The swifter the Minis concluded the journey, the more points they earned. As the eventful day came to a close the community gathered for a 60th birthday party for Mini. A Union Jack dress- » MiniWorld February 2020 89

Event up theme made it a colourful night. In past years Nationals accommodated autocross and motorkhana events, making for intense competition. However, TMOC took a lighter approach to the motoring activities this year. Sunday’s program included a Funkhana, regional sightseeing tour and a hillclimb. Nationals committee member Greg Sutton revealed: "It’s the first Time a Funkhana has been run at a Mini Nationals and it was chosen to try and engage more people than the usual Motorkhana. And it worked, with about 80 cars going through the course. The Funkhana is a slower, more skills-based course that everyone could partake in even in their concours Minis. The only problem we had was that everyone wanted to do it again." To wrap up a hectic but fun weekend everyone hauled themselves back to the Hotel Armitage for dinner and prize-giving. In the end, Karl Celeste won the overall individual of the weekend. Meanwhile, the Mini Car Club of Auckland dominated the event by winning the most points. Scrapbook A nostalgic rummage through the MiniWorld archives...

A Special Mini The 1100 Special was the second UK limited edition Mini. It was launched in August 1979 and inuenced by the lesser-spec Mini Special model built by Seneffe in Belgium. Initially there were supposed to be 2500 made for the UK market but it proved so popular that 5100 were produced. The limited edition Special had many characteristics that were not available as standard on other UK saloon Minis such as a vinyl roof, side stripes, Exacton alloys with plastic wheel arches, 1098cc engine, side repeaters on the wings. Inside there was a unique steering wheel, Clubman rear bumper at the front and a centre console. The cars were available in a choice of

Metallic Rose with a tan-coloured vinyl roof or Metallic Silver with a black vinyl roof. The interior of both cars had tartan fabric seats with either tan or grey sides depending on the car's exterior colour.

The model continues to be popular among Mini collectors and can often be found with many original features intact as they were often well looked after due to being so well-specced.

The Mini Special Register is dedicated to preserving Mini Specials. See: www. facebook.com/MiniSpecialRegister
