The Junior Grizzlies, a co-ed, non-competitive baseball league for athletes of all ages with mental and physical challenges, celebrated its twelfth season in 2019.

The season kicked off with the Spring Training Jamboree on Saturday, March 23rd. Games were played on Saturdays from April 1st to June 3rd at the Field of Dreams located at 1550 Herndon Ave. in Clovis (behind Gateway High School). Each player received a hat, shirt and trophy; individual and team photo; and participation in the Junior Grizzlies All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby with Grizzlies players at Chukchansi Park on June 2nd. As part of Minor League Baseball’s “Copa de la Diversión” (Fun Cup!), a new-for-2019 alter ego, the “Fresno Lowriders” (Lowriders de Fresno) has been unveiled by the Fresno Grizzlies as part of the nationwide MiLB promotion. Clad in an eye-catching purple, black and gold color scheme (images attached), the Lowriders will take the field four times at Chukchansi Park in 2019 on June 15-16 (vs. Omaha) and July 2728 (vs. Reno), in a pair of “Lowriders Weekends” in Downtown Fresno. Copa de la Diversión is Minor League Baseball’s mission to authentically connect teams with their diverse communities, and embrace/celebrate culture that resonates with Latino fans nationwide. Fresno is one of over 70 communities and teams taking part in the celebration, an initiative separate from the franchise’s popular and far-reaching “Fresno Tacos” promotion for home “Taco Tuesday” games. The Triple-A Pacific Coast League has also been at the forefront of “Copa,” fielding popular alternate identities such as the “Flying Chanclas” (San Antonio Missions), “Dorados” (Sacramento River Cats) and “Mariachis de Nuevo Mexico” 8

(Albuquerque Isotopes), in addition to the Fresno Lowriders. In addition to the amazing new uniforms on the field, car shows at Chukchansi Park are being planned for both Lowriders Weekends on June 15-16, and July 27-28. It’s been announced that the “best in show” will win the “Sonny Madrid Award,” named for the Central Valley native and founder of Lowrider Magazine.

“This is another landmark day for this franchise, and what it means to have a Triple-A baseball team for our entire community to call their own,” said Fresno Grizzlies events and entertainment manager Ray Ortiz. “It’s truly an honor to be asked to participate in Copa de la Diversión, and living where we do, we appreciate Minor League Baseball’s efforts to celebrate the diversity that exists in their markets

After the announcement was so well received, the club is already looking ahead to 2020. coast-to-coast, and doing that in a fun way. This Lowriders cap might be the coolest uniform piece I’ve ever seen on a professional field.” Several local and state-wide car clubs, including the Lowrider Councils of San Jose and San Francisco, and Travel Team of California are working together to establish the United Lowrider Council of Central California. The council will raise awareness of Lowrider car shows and “cruises” as fun, family-friendly events. Such collaborations exist throughout California in places with vibrant Lowrider scenes, where passion for these collectable cars runs deep. Each Lowriders Weekend will feature music, show cars at Chukchansi Park and Spanish public address announcing throughout each game. The logos, uniforms and merchandise were designed by Fresno Grizzlies graphic designer Dorian Castro, a Central California native (Huron), lending a definitive local flair and expertise to Fresno’s entry into Copa de la Diversión. The Fresno Grizzlies are using their platform to promote and advance the positives associated with the word “Lowrider.” Too often in pop culture, Lowriders

are incorrectly stereotyped as being affiliated with gangs, when actually, maintaining a lowrider car requires knowledge, hard work and dedication. The vehicles are moving pieces of art; many are decorated with imagery that tells stories of Mexican and Chicano history. As a part of Copa de la Diversión, the “Lowriders De Fresno” aim to help change any negative images of lowriding, by shining a light on the positivity of the art form, but also honor a community that is deeply rooted in Central California culture. The game-worn jerseys, autographed by the players, will be available for bid in an online auction beginning July 27, during the second Lowriders Weekend. The Lupus Foundation of America is a nationwide partner of Minor League Baseball for Copa de la Diversión.

In addition to the amazing new uniforms on the field, a car show is being planned for the first Lowriders Weekend, and the “best in show” will win the “Sonny Madrid Award,” named for the Central Valley native and founder of Lowrider Magazine. It’s also been announced that the winner will see their beautiful car be the centerpiece of the 2020 Fresno Lowriders identity. The winning car will be adapted into the 2020 Fresno Lowriders logo, with the color scheme for the uniform matching the car as well. Players to Watch IF Taylor Ward Ward enters his fifth professional season with the Angels organization and his second stint at the Triple-A level. The former Fresno State star has dominated this season with the Bees. Through 26 games, he has a .289 average while smashing eight home runs. Ward has already seen big league time this year and could be a nice bat for the Angels down the line.

OF Ian Happ Happ enters his fifth professional season with the Cubs organization and his second stint at the Triple-A level. The former 1st round pick has made a name for himself with the Cubs, crushing 39 homers and driving in 112 runs over 257 contests. Happ played over 100 games the past two years with Chicago and could be a midseason option again for the Cubs.

C Andrew Susac Susac enters his eighth professional season and his first with the Royals organization. In 2014, Susac played for the Grizzlies while they were affiliated with the Giants. RHP Ryan Dull Dull enters his eighth professional season with the Athletics organization and his fourth stint at the Triple-A level. Despite being a 32nd rounder in 2012, Dull has risen through the Oakland organization. He has appeared in 166 MLB games, notching a 3.91 ERA and four saves. Bacus enters his eighth professional season and his sixth with the Nationals organization. The right hander has dominated in his first taste of Triple-A. Through his first 16 outings, Bacus went 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA. He didn’t allow an earned run in eight straight appearances ranging from April 28th to May 17th. If the Indiana State product continues to produce out of the bullpen, his first big league call-up is imminent.

Wilson enters his eighth professional season and second with the Nationals organization. The 28-year old has dominated in the young season. Through 39 games, Wilson is on pace to shatter three Grizzlies’ records. He can break A.J. Reed’s home run record by 14, Reed and Scott McClain’s RBI record by 32 and Calvin Murray’s total bases mark by 55. All three of those statistics rank him in the top five of the PCL.

Hernandez enters his ninth professional season and his third in the United States with the Nationals organization. The 31-year old Cuban enjoyed his first career grand slam May 9th at Sacramento in a 7-4 win. His 11 home runs through 37 games ranks second on the team behind Jacob Wilson. Hernandez does not have any MLB time, but could be a future call-up to Washington if his slugging continues.

Coaching Staff Randy Knorr, Manager Former Major League catcher Randy Knorr is the inaugural Fresno Grizzlies manager during the Washington Nationals affiliation, and is the 11th manager in franchise history. Knorr, 50, has minor league managerial and coaching experience in the Washington organization dating to the 2005 season, and served as Senior Advisor for player development to Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo in 2016 and 2017. A veteran of 11 MLB seasons as a player, Knorr turned pro after being selected in the 10th round of the 1986 First Year Player Draft out of high school in Baldwin Park, California, by the Toronto Blue Jays. After making his Major League debut in 1991 for Toronto, Knorr caught 47 games for a pair of World Series-winning clubs between 1992 and 1993, remaining with the Toronto organization through the 1995 season. He would also appear in the Majors for the Houston Astros (1996-1997, 1999), Florida Marlins (1998), Texas Rangers (2000) and Montreal Expos (2001), prior to his retirement as a player following the 2004 season. Knorr played his final three seasons in Triple-A with Montreal for Ottawa of the International League (2002) and Edmonton (2003-2004) of the Pacific Coast League, before remaining with the organization as a minor league manager as MLB operations shifted from Montreal to Washington, D.C. Knorr appeared in 1,423 games as a 19-year-professional, including 253 games in the big leagues. Guiding Class A Savannah of the South Atlantic League in 2005, Knorr was just 36 during his first season as a manager, before a promotion to A-Advanced Potomac. In 2008, Knorr led the Potomac Nationals to the Carolina League Championship, the franchise’s first domestic minor league ring after relocating to Washington, D.C. In 2009 he served as Washington’s Major League bullpen coach, before taking the reins of the Double-A Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League in 2010, a pivotal club in developing the Nationals’ Major League squads that would win four of six National League East division titles between 2012 and 2017. Pitchers Stephen Strasburg, Tanner Roark and Drew Storen were all under Knorr’s tutelage at Harrisburg in 2010, as was infielder Danny Espinosa. Knorr also managed franchise staples Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman in the lower levels. Before moving into a front office role as Senior Advisor for player development in 2016 and 2017, Knorr was the Nationals’ Major League bench coach for four seasons (2012-2015), and was also manager at Triple-A Syracuse in 2011, before re-assuming that post in 2018 during the final year of the clubs’ affiliation. 2019 in Fresno will be Knorr’s first experience in the PCL since playing for Edmonton (current Round Rock Express franchise) in 2004.

Coaching Staff Brian Daubach, Hitting Coach Entering his ninth season as a coach with the Washington Nationals organization, former Major League first baseman Brian Daubach, 46, will instruct the organization’s Triple-A hitters for a fourth-consecutive season. Daubach played in 661 MLB games over eight seasons for the Florida Marlins (1998), Boston Red Sox (1999-2002, 2004), Chicago White Sox (2003) and New York Mets (2005), and suited up for 1,235 additional minor league games during a 17-year playing career (1990-2006). Daubach was selected in the 17th round of the 1990 First Year Player Draft out of high school in Belleville, Illinois, and makes for a total of three World Series rings on the 2019 Fresno Grizzlies coaching staff. Daubach was a member of the 2004 Red Sox.

Brad Holman, Pitching Coach A veteran of seven professional seasons as a player, Brad Holman, 50, enters his second season as Washington’s Triple-A pitching coach, after serving as the Texas Rangers’ Major League bullpen coach in 2016 and 2017 and at Triple-A Syracuse (International League) in 2018. After turning pro in 1990, selected in the 35th round of the First Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals, Holman made his Major League debut in 1993 for the Seattle Mariners with 19 relief appearances. Holman also pitched in the PCL for Seattle affiliates in Calgary (1993-1994, current Albuquerque Isotopes franchise) and Tacoma (1995).

Eric Montague, Athletic Trainer Eric Montague enters his second season as head athletic trainer for the Triple-A Nationals, first assuming that post for the 2018 Syracuse club (International League). Montague is in his 21st season in professional baseball, and his seventh with the Washington Nationals, spending the previous four seasons (2014-2017) as head trainer at Double-A Harrisburg (Eastern League). Prior to first joining Washington for the 2013 season at A-Advanced Potomac (Carolina League), Montague spent 10 seasons as a minor league athletic trainer with the Houston Astros, including two seasons with Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas League) in 2011 and 2012. He first worked in baseball for the New York Mets from 1998 through 2001.

Mike Warren, Strength & Conditioning Coach Mike Warren enters his ninth season with the Washington Nationals organization, and his fifth leading the strength and conditioning program at the Triple-A level. Warren was strength and conditioning coach for Syracuse (International League) from 2015 through 2018, and was with A-Advanced Potomac (Carolina League) for the four prior seasons.

AUSTIN VOTH Now in his seventh professional season, Grizzlies right-handed starter Austin Voth made his Major League debut by appearing in four games (two starts) with the Washington Nationals last season. The Washington state native is back on the west coast during the Nationals’ first season affiliated with Fresno – finishing school for what is hopefully a permanent MLB call on the horizon. The 26-year-old was selected by the Nationals in the fifth round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Washington. Q: You graduated from Kentwood High School in Covington, Washington where you played under Jon Aarstad for three years. How big of an influence did Jon have on your development as a player? Austin Voth: He was one of those guys since I was young that was mentoring me in hitting and pitching. I played first base back then on top of pitching. I was working with a pitching coach at the time, so he

necessarily didn’t have to focus intently 1-on-1 with me pitching. He definitely helped the team and he helped me with my competitive edge. We won a lot of games. We had a good group of guys there and it was a lot of fun.

Q: In 2010, your high school won the 4A State Championship and you got to pitch at Safeco Field (now T-Mobile Park) in Seattle (3 H, 8 K), how was that experience for you? AV: I mean it was a blast. Just pitching in a MLB ballpark for the first time was a little nerve-wracking. We didn’t get a lot of fans through the season, but I think in that game we had 10 times as many fans as we got the whole year. It was a nervous time for me but I pitched decent and we won that game, which made it an even better experience. Q: Guessing you grew up a Seattle Mariners fan and of course went to many games at Safeco Field. Who did you grow up idolizing and do you have any fond memories of the games? AV: Jamie Moyer, Ken Griffey Jr., John Olerud were guys that I loved watching. Especially Jamie Moyer, the way that he commanded his fastball and his changeup. He was only throwing 83-85 at times and he still 19

A Conversation With... had hitters off balance. Watching Ken Griffey Jr. was incredible. He was so much fun to watch at the plate. There were a couple of games I remember as a kid when we would dress up. It was Little League Day, so we would walk around the warning track and be there in our uniforms. I actually went to the game where they broke the MLB record for wins in a season and that was a very cool experience. It was a packed house and the fans were going nuts. It was awesome. Q: You stayed in state for college at the University of Washington, how did you enjoy your time as a Husky? AV: It was good. It was a great learning experience but humbling as well. I had a little bit of success and a lot of failures. It made me better for sure. We didn’t win a lot of games because we were kind of in a re-building phase in our program. I was a part of that but looking back, I was happy that I went there because being a Husky was great. Q: You are a big Pac-12 fan and your cousin Sam Gaviglio (Blue Jays) went to Oregon State, so that made it interesting with family bragging rights. How would you describe your time playing against the Beavers and Sam? AV: I loved seeing him pitch. He was a little bit of a different pitcher than I was. He was more of a sinker ball pitcher with a cutter and slider. I was more of a thrower who had somewhat of an off speed pitch. He was a little more put together than I was so I looked up to him in that sense. We only got to play him my freshman year for a three-game series so I only got to see him play once in college. It was definitely cool facing and seeing him play too. Q: 2013 was a year to remember. You posted a 2.99 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) over 105 innings and your 98 strikeouts were second in the Pac-12 only to former Grizzly Mark Appel. Then, the Nationals drafted you in the fifth round. How would you describe that year?

AV: It was awesome. I had a great season. I had a slow start but I picked it up and started throwing really well, better with each start. I really wanted to build on my momentum going into each and every start. At the end of the season, I was drafted by the Nationals and it was a dream come true. Q: Where were you when you were drafted? Who told you and whom did you tell first? AV: I was at my house with my parents and my girlfriend at the time. I basically had the laptop up and I was watching the draft. I had a call from the Mariners earlier on but they didn’t call my name, and then the Nationals called after. I saw my name pop up and I was like wow this is actually happening. My grandparents came later and the rest of my family came and we celebrated that night. It was great. Q: You made your pro debut in the Gulf Coast League in 2013 (rookie ball) and the Nats’ squad went 49-9 (.845), the highest win percentage by any minor league team in history. They made playoffs where you threw five innings of shutout baseball. Was it pretty cool to start your pro career like that?

AV: It was different because going from college to pro ball was completely different going to wood bats and new balls and what not. I had a brief stint with the GCL Nationals before I went up to Auburn. I pitched really well at both levels but adjusting from college to pro ball was tough. My main thing was to attack the zone and it seemed to work out in my favor, especially when we were playing well. Q: Then you continued through the minors with the Nationals, blossoming into a prospect and a top starter which has led to big league time. What has been instrumental in your success? AV: My work ethic. I get here early every day and get into the weight room and stretch. I get a lift in. I do whatever it takes to be prepared that day and try to work on getting better each and every day. I want to be prepared on that fifth day to start. Q: What have Fresno pitching coach Brad Holman and Grizzlies manager Randy Knorr done to contribute to your success? AV: I have had Brad for the past two years and he is awesome. He is easy to talk to and he knows a lot about

baseball. He goes through a lot of cues with me when I am struggling to get back on track. He is definitely one of the reasons I got up to the big leagues. I hope we both can do that again this year. Randy on the other hand is an awesome manager. He is everything you want in a manager. He is going to root for you and have your back. He also makes things fun which is needed with the long season. Q: When the Nationals called you up for the first time last year, who did you call first and of course who told you? AV: I was at my apartment in Syracuse. I got a call from Randy who told me I was going up to the big leagues. I called my wife, my parents and my agent to tell them. I had to get up early, like 2 a.m. for a 5 a.m. flight which was tough because it was a crazy night. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep at all

that night so when I woke up, I was extremely tired. It seemed like it took forever though to get through the day but it was all worth it. Q: You made your debut at Citi Field in New York on July 14, 2018. What emotions were you feeling as you made that start against the Mets? AV: I was pumped. I was excited. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel as nervous as I thought I was going to be. It was my third time getting the call to the big leagues, but the first time they needed me to pitch. I was ready to go and once I struck out my first batter, I knew that I belonged. Wow, something clicked for me and I knew that I was ready and I knew that I belonged. A BETTER WAY TO BID Grizzlies Announce LiveSource App as Online Auction Partner

On Opening Night, the Fresno Grizzlies launched a new way for fans to bid on game-worn jersey and memorabilia auctions that benefit our local community partners. The Grizzlies will utilize the LiveSource mobile app for jersey and memorabilia auctions for the 2019 season. With LiveSource, Grizzlies fans will be able to bid and win unique memorabilia and theme jerseys from their seats in the stadium or from home (or work) if they're not able to attend the games. The bidding process is simple and easy: 1. On your phone or tablet, download the LiveSource app from Apple iTunes or Google Play 2. Create an account and the app will automatically find the auction nearest you 3. Bid for your favorite items and get notifications when others outbid you 4. Pay for your items securely via credit card

5. Immediately pick up your item(s) from the stadium that night or arrange for pick up during regular office hours. The Grizzlies will also have iPads available at the Community Engagement table to educate fans how to use the new app and to help fans bid directly from the table. Baseball organizations throughout the country are already experiencing tremendous benefits with the LiveSource instant marketplace. By taking advantage of this technology, the Grizzlies will treat fans to convenience and excitement as they bid on their favorite auctions. Additionally, the platform will provide fans the chance to bid on Grizzlies jerseys and memorabilia regardless of their location. Both of these options will not only add to the fan experience but also help raise additional dollars for our community partners. In 2018, the Grizzlies raised more than $80,000 for our community partners including Marjaree Mason Center, Our Heroes Dreams, and United Cerebral Palsy.
