A Good Time for Golf Carts As I sit here and write this, the stay-at-home order for my home state of Florida has been in effect for a full month now. It seems like two years. It has been a productive time however; a time to take care of household projects, a time of great family bonding and a time spent launching a new magazine. Golf Carting Magazine is proud to bring you our debut issue since changing from Golf Cart Times. Our team is profoundly grateful for the opportunity to make our mark in the industry that we all love and are passionate about. You will almost certainly agree that it is a good time for golf carts. The industry isn’t growing, the industry is exploding. Experts talk about industry growth doubling in five years and they predict this and they project that. You read five articles, you get five different opinions. But everyone agrees that the golf cart industry is on a meteoric rise. This publication is committed to excellence and we will try to be equal parts information and entertainment. We want to focus as much on the “lifestyle” of carting as we do on the actual machines. We want to introduce you to interesting people and allow you a peak behind the curtain of manufacturers and innovators. We want the photography to blow your socks off. Golf Carting Magazine is hitting the ground rolling and we are glad you decided to come along for the ride. So it is with great personal pride and genuine pleasure for us to launch Golf Carting Magazine. It seems like this June issue is the perfect time for us to begin our journey and feels like there is an ironic parallel with where we are at as a country. industrynews CLUB CAR ENGINEERS A SPECIAL DELIVERY TO LOCAL HOSPITALS 3D PRINTED MASK ADJUSTERS DONATED TO CORONAVIRUS FIGHT
On Monday morning, April 6, 2020 at 10 a.m., Club Car’s Justin Thigpen, advanced manufacturing engineer, made a very special delivery to hospitals in Augusta, Georgia, to support healthcare workers in the fight against the coronavirus. The delivery consisted of 200 donated, 3D-printed face mask adjusters. These small plastic parts—created by the Club Car team on two on-site 3D printers with a few modifications to a free Hewlett Packard design download—allow doctors and nurses to secure their face masks more tightly and more comfortably. Once the masks’ elastic straps are attached to the hooks of the adjuster, the straps pull on the adjuster rather than on the health workers’ ears. This alleviates the soreness, and even blisters, caused by wearing a mask for too long. The mask stability the adjusters provide also lessens the number of times doctors and nurses need to touch their faces to adjust their masks. This is just the beginning! Justin said, “To date the team has delivered over 585 of the plastic pieces to three local hospitals— University Hospital, Doctors Hospital and Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center. industrynews YAMAHA GOLF-CAR COMPANY ASSISTS STUDENTS AT J.C. BOOTH MIDDLE SCHOOL WITH GOLF CAR REBUILD Yamaha Golf-Car Company is very proud to share that they have been working with local 7th Grade STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) students to rebuild a golf car from the ground up. J.C. Booth Middle School is located in Peachtree City, a city known for having an abundance of golf cars and an over 100-mile network of multiuse paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and golf cars. This project started back in December 2018, when Kathie Lanman and Jason Bingel, STEM and Gifted Science teachers at J.C. Booth MS, acquired an old, out of use Yamaha golf car from a local golf club. Lanman, Bingel, and their team of students began dismantling the car and diagnosing its problems. In January 2019, Lanman reached out to Yamaha directly and got in touch with Chad Mohesky, Service Manager, who offered to assist by providing missing parts. In addition to providing materials for the students to use in their rebuild, Mohesky—along with key members of his Service team— visited the school and spent time sharing their knowledge and expertise directly with the students. YMMC (Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America) even assisted with rebuilding the actual frame of the car.
In May 2019, the students finally got the car up and running. Since that time, the students have been working on the body and overall appearance of the car. Significant body work has been done, including repainting the vehicle, replacing seats and miscellaneous parts, and more. Through this unique experience, the students have learned the value of perseverance. “Almost every step of the way, we ran into problems, and every time we were able to find a solution,” said Lanman. “I really can't overstate how helpful Yamaha has been throughout this. If it were not for Yamaha's input, we would not have been able to see this through to completion.”

TEXTRON SPECIALIZED VEHICLES RECALLS GAS-POWERED E-Z-GO, CUSHMAN AND TRACKER BRAND OFF-ROAD VEHICLES. Textron Specialized Vehicles of Augusta, Ga., is recalling about 20,573 gas-powered E-Z-GO, Cushman and Tracker brand off-road vehicles. The starter generator wire can be improperly secured, allowing it to come into contact with the vehicle’s exhaust, posing a
industrynews fire hazard. The firm has received 13 reports of melted and/or burned wires and electrical components and loss of vehicle function in some cases, including one report of fire. No injuries have been reported. This recall involves gas-powered E-ZGO, Cushman and Tracker brand off-road vehicles manufactured from November 2018, through June 2019, with certain nonsequential serial numbers ranging from 3377720 to 3440924. The serial number is located on the kick panel below the driver side seat. The vehicles, manufactured in the U.S., were sold at E-Z-GO, Cushman and Tracker off road dealerships nationwide from November 2018, through October 2019, for between $6,300 and $13,400. What to do? Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled off-road vehicles and contact Textron Specialized Vehicles for a free repair. CHARLESTON CUSTOM GOLF Taking the Low Country By Storm IN THE BEGINNING It was in February 2018 when eight-year master mechanic Matthew Smith made the decision to start a custom golf cart shop in his garage. At the time, little did he know that in just two short years, he would have two thriving locations and that Charleston Custom Carts would be one of the largest custom cart brands on the Eastern seaboard. Charleston Custom Carts started as a hobby in a garage as golf cart dealers often do. Matt was a master mechanic for working for Honda and Chevy, but decided he wanted to go back to school for his engineering degree. In school, Matt was helping friends with golf carts, and building a few for himself. 16 GOLFCARTING.COM
One thing led to another and CCC was born. CCC is truly a family owned business. Matt focuses on the custom builds and service, while his wife Danielle handles general manager duties including, customer service, billing, scheduling, and account management. Matt’s brother is the head technician and oversees the service center. Personal attention and customer satisfaction is the main focus of the business and CCC prides itself on superb customer service. Matt’s motto is simple: “Make the customer happy at all costs.” EXPLOSIVE GROWTH The rapid growth of Charleston Custom Carts and

the transition from a garage-shop to respected dealer is almost unbelievable. In less than four-months after being in his garage, Matt knew that the Charleston area was desperate for a fully customizable golf cart provider and he also knew that he needed a real shop. In a centrally-located area of dramatic growth known as Daniel Island, Matt found a perfect location to open his first showroom and service center. Matt and his small team of three spent two-months building-out the new location and determined to raise the bar from the traditional golf cart shop, and focus on creating a comfortable and inviting retail location for its customers. Instead of the dark, grimy, and often chaotic golf cart shop Matt was used to visiting, he wanted to create more of a “motorsports� style showroom; clean, well-lighted, bright-colored and sophisticated. The Daniel Island, SC shop opened its doors in February, 2019 and was instantly a huge success. So much so that in a matter of a few short weeks Charleston Custom Carts filled the 5,000 square foot shop with new customer repairs and custom builds and immediately needed more space. Matt realized that they simply did not have enough space to build enough custom carts to meet the demand. Never mind that the new location was barely a month old. Matt knew he needed to expand.

CHARLESTON CUSTOM CARTS #2 With almost providential timing, Matt learned that the owner of a long-time golf cart dealership located in neighboring Mount Pleasant, SC wanted to sell his business so he could retire. The location was perfect, the facility was perfect and Matt jumped at the chance to purchase Low Country Golf Carts in Mount Pleasant. Low Country Golf Carts had been in business a long time and had garnered a very large customer base, as well as a terrific reputation for providing excellent service and customer satisfaction. Matthew moved quickly and worked out a deal with the owner to purchase the business and all the existing inventory. Just seven short months after opening Charleston Custom Carts in Daniel Island, SC, Matt opened the doors to his second location in Mount Pleasant, SC. 18 GOLFCARTING.COM
Like the first location, the Mount Pleasant facility would experience extensive renovations in order to duplicate the highly popular, lounge-like atmosphere of the first. The grand opening in January of 2020 attracted hundreds of friends, family and customers that all joined together to celebrate the new and highly-anticipated store. The new location is almost 15,000 total square feet of retail showroom and shop space. It now serves as the headquarters and flagship for Charleston Custom Carts and truly elevates the traditional golf cart shop in both aesthetics and customer experience. One walks in and immediately feels an automotive showroom appeal, elegant, comfortable and chic. Charleston Custom Carts currently has seven employees and builds exceptional custom carts for buyers all over the country.

GOLF CART SAFETY GUIDE WE’VE CREATED 14 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOU SAFE WHILE ENJOYING YOUR ELECTRIC CART. Let’s face it. Golf carts and low-speed vehicles are becoming more and more popular. They are driving off fairways and into our neighborhood streets. They are often carrying beer and children and are mingling with regular car traffic. While it’s nice to see the masses turning to this efficient way of transportation, safety issues are becoming a large concern. The safety record of golf carts is not nationally tracked and while finding statistics of golf-cart related injuries is challenging, it is most certainly a growing trend in the U.S. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC.gov) approximately 18,000 people required emergency care due to golf carts in 2015 alone. And according to The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database, electric cart accidents could be as high as 100,000 incidents per year. Like all vehicle drivers, golf cart operators should not just be driving defensively, but 22 GOLFCARTING.COM
strategically. Tragedy can face golf cart operators in seemingly the most minor of accidents. So how can you stay safe in golf carts, on and off public roads? We’ve created 15 tips to help keep you safe while enjoying your electric cart. ELECTRIC CART SAFETY GUIDE 1. KEEP ARMS AND LEGS INSIDE THE VEHICLE We know this from riding carnival rides and roller coasters. Keep your appendages inside. It’s that simple. It can be tempting with open-air bliss to stick an arm or leg out. Don’t. If the vehicle is driving too close to something else, it can lead to disaster. One common way people get very hurt very quickly is dragging a leg out of the cart while driving. All it takes is an unseen curb or rock and in an instant, a very serious knee or ankle injury can result. 2. USE SEAT BELTS Most golf carts don’t have seat belts but this is changing. LSV laws are widely mandating seat belts. Have seat belts installed on your golf cart if you don’t
currently have them. Don’t overlook one of the most obvious vehicle safety measures. 3. ABIDE BY ALL STANDARD TRAFFIC RULES Too many people think that the rules of the road don’t apply to golf carts. This is a dangerous perspective. Just because you may not have to register your cart at the DMV doesn’t mean that you can blow off stop signs and traffic lights or drive in the center of the road or turn without hand signals. Follow the rules. 4. CARTS ARE NOT A LEGAL ALTERNATIVE TO DRINKING AND DRIVING “But officer… I’m not drinking and driving. I’m in a golf cart.” It doesn’t work that way. A person who drives under the influence of drugs or alcohol can and will face arrest and charges. Just because it is a golf cart doesn’t mean a person will escape a DUI. 5. DRIVE DEFENSIVELY On a road with cars, a golf cart is low on the totem. Always be looking out for cars passing, and drive defensively… if not strategically. Anticipate what other vehicles will do and react accordingly. 6. AVOID DRIVING IN EXTREME WEATHER Most golf carts don’t handle well in poor weather conditions. Be super careful on wet roads. I’m not sure why anyone would feel the need to take a golf cart out in the snow but avoid driving in the white stuff. Golf carts do not possess the same technologies as automobiles and are limited in their adaptability. 7. PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES Golf carts are exposed and a wonderful target for thieves. Protect all valuables by either locking them up in a compartment or taking them. 8. PERFORM SAFETY CHECKS AND MAINTENANCE TWICE A YEAR If properly cared for, golf carts can last a long time. It is still essential to maintain them and have them checked out so that everything is in working order. Thankfully, golf cart maintenance is not complicated and rarely expensive. 9. HAVE HEADLIGHTS INSTALLED Generally, it is not smart to drive golf carts at night.
Most states and jurisdictions prohibit night driving. Still, it is essential to have headlights and taillights installed. The more visibility your cart has the safer you will be. 10. DON’T ALLOW CHILDREN TO DRIVE GOLF CARTS While many areas don’t require a valid driver’s license for cart drivers, that shouldn’t mean you should get your 10-year a golf cart for Christmas. Most jurisdictions prohibit drivers under the age of 16. Only those that are old enough and familiar with driving and handling electric carts should be operating them. 11. AVOID OVERLOADING YOUR CART Carts have relatively low carrying capacities. Adding too much weight to the vehicle can create problems. Trying to cram seven people on a 4-seat cart can lead to bad things. 12. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT Most golf carts don’t come with rearview mirrors and many are custom made for carts. It is an exceptional idea to have mirrors installed on your cart and they are relatively inexpensive. Always check behind the vehicle before backing up and be aware of blind spots. Never assume that other drivers will get out of the way. 13. PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY Those on foot still have the right away. And yes, you can get in the same amount of trouble for hitting a pedestrian with a golf cart as opposed to a Nissan. 14. AVOID GOING OFF ROAD Don’t get mad at the messenger. I know it’s tempting to go off road but unless your cart is specifically built for that, avoid it. Golf carts are primarily designed to drive on smooth, manicured grass and paved paths. Trying to climb over rocks, ascend steep hills and cross creeks is going to take its toll. BE SAFE Golf carts and low-speed vehicles are smart and extremely efficient, as long as they are used responsibly. Take extra precautions and can keep the roads safe. Bret: Back in 2009, on behalf of the economy crashing, I was laid off from an engineering firm. My college roommate was working at a shop [golf shop] in Columbia [SC] and asked if I wanted to give it a try. After several months of doing it, my father and I decided to open up shop in Rock Hill, SC.
GCMAG: When did your business really take off and why? Bret: About 5 years ago business really started picking up. Advertising and putting a word of mouth foot print in our community grew our business tremendously. Acquiring the major dealer lines [Yamaha, Club Cart, Star Carts] have been a big boost for our business as well.

he heart of your golf cart are the batteries. Unless you go with lithium batteries, you really have three options… 6 volt, 8 volt or 12 volt.
