‘BACKYARDING’ Is Here To Stay T ments of outdoor power equipment increased 16% in 2020. To put is simply, 2020 was a monster year for outdoor power equipment and related landscaping materials. As of this writing, numbers are already solid this spring, as homeowners continue showing interest in making backyard investments. In addition, on the commercial side, landscapers are moving ahead with equipment purchases they may have held back on last year. Kiser and the OPEI board have recently reflected on this notion and believe that there has been a real reconnection of understanding of the importance of outdoor space. They believe the notion is here to stay. For landscape professionals, this boom in backyard improvements can be an equal benefit. Remember, from the homeowners’ perspective, you’re the experts. When they try and select plants and put in something that needs full sun into a shaded area, it’s you they call to make it right. Let your customers or potential customers know that you are there to help. You have the labor, the materials, and the knowledge to execute their vision. It doesn’t matter what they have, it can be an acre, half acre, quarter acre, a patio, a roof deck, whatever space they have that is outdoors can be configured or modified and pay dividends. I think if landscape contractors do that with homeowners, that space can be tailored to be beautiful and aesthetic, but also purposeful.

hroughout the pandemic, I’ve watched people reconnect and get to know how to care for and appreciate their yards and landscapes. We all like our lawns and landscapes to be aesthetically pleasing and pretty, but they also can be purposeful. Research shows simply spending time in nature, which can start in your backyard, is good for reducing stress, boosting heart health, boosting Vitamin D levels, and enhancing memory. Thanks to the family yard, the health and wellbeing benefits of being outside are just a few steps away. Although the pandemic has been awful for a lot of people, for those who have been able to get outdoors and take some stewardship of their space, it has been a meaningful time. Kris Kiser, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute president and CEO, defines this trend as “backyarding.” He says the term refers to the trend to move many indoor activities, from working in an office or classroom to dining and recreation, to the outdoors. Over the past year, backyards and other managed landscapes have become a haven for social gatherings, celebrating milestones/holidays, working, studying, playing, exercising, and relaxing. Kiser says there are almost limitless possibilities for creativity as homeowners seek to expand and enjoy their yards. In 2020, home improvements, particularly those in the backyard, skyrocketed, as did the demand for outdoor power equipment. All the things that help people use the outdoors got into real demand. According to OPEI data, ship-

been happening with the pandemic, and of course, economy issues, we still have a very optimistic 2021 ahead of us both in the commercial and residential zero turn mower markets. We see the overall market growing this year. We see folks who maybe didn’t purchase the equipment last year, coming out and spending that money this year. After last year, there was probably a lot of maintenance and things like that done on their equipment. This year, we’ve already seen a lot of increased purchasing and buying orders. Our retail numbers are up and we just kind of see that the resilient landscapers are coming back strong after COVID and we need to give them equipment that works as hard as they do. We see a very good year this year and likewise, I think we’re going to have a record year for the Bobcat brand. Joshua Sooy, segment director, professional Equipment, Cub Cadet: In 2020 the industry saw soft demand because of the pandemic. Now we’re seeing a lot of those customers that held off last year be able to purchase new commercial equipment in 2021. Lenny Mangnall, product manager, Exmark: We’re very optimistic and believe 2021 is going to be a very good year on the landscape contractor side of the business. In early 2020, everything

ith technology constantly shifting, trends are not always easy to track. Something that gains popularity one month or year, may wane shortly thereafter. Taking into consideration the economic climate in the aftermath of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, Green Industry Pros recently asked representatives from major mower manufacturers and the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute to weigh in with their thoughts on the outlook for the mower market in 2021 and what features they find are drawing landscapers to their products. Q: What is your overall outlook regarding the mower market in 2021 and into the future? Kris Kiser, President, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI): Despite the challenges of 2020, last year was a record year for the market. We saw unit shipments increase by 15 percent overall. Many landscape contractors, though, held back on making large equipment purchases. With a solid winter and easing uncertainty about the COVID situation, many should be in a good cash position heading into spring, and we expect this segment of the market to increase about 6% in 2021. Ron Scheffler, senior product manager, Bobcat: With all the craziness that’s

stalled out for a period due to the uncertainty. Then as we moved into summer, things really started to heat up and we believe that upward trend will continue. Brian Schoenthaler, marketing specialist, Grasshopper: We feel good about 2021. Indications point toward a good year for the landscape industry on both the consumer and landscaper side. Dealers remain open for business and demand for outdoor power equipment remains robust. Brad Unruh, director of new product development, Hustler Turf Equipment: We are excited about the forecast for the 2021 mower market and beyond. Over the last year, most people spent more time at home more than ever before, leaving them more time to focus on the appearance of their yards and landscapes. Nick Minas, go-to-market manager,

Manufacturers continue to introduce new models with new features and expanded power sources, and there’s strong demand from the market for new equipment. Hustler Turf Equipment

John Deere: We have a very positive outlook on the mower market in 2021 and beyond. The industry is rebounding well from the pandemic and looks to be continuing the trajectory it was experiencing pre-COVID. We remain bullish on the commercial mowing market now and into the future. Steve Cathey, territory manager, KIOTI Tractor: The overall outlook for the mower market this year and beyond remains strong. With more free time on their hands, some homeowners may have taken a more hands-on approach with their landscaping needs during the past year. However, with more folks getting back to work, they’re likely going to begin once again relying on landscaping professionals to maintain both residential and commercial properties. In turn, the demand for long-lasting, highfunctioning mowers is likely to continue climbing as we look towards the future. Jake Segrin, marketing manager, Scag: We are expecting another strong year in the mower market for 2021. 2020 was a strong year but an odd year to say the least with the late spring in parts of the country and a lot of uncertainties surrounding the impact of the pandemic. Landscapers in the north, and even parts of the south, this year had strong snow seasons that should positively impact funds available for equipment upgrades in spring on the lawn care side of their businesses. Mitchel Hoffman, marketing manager, Toro: We have an extremely positive

Optimism is high for 2021 among mower manufacturers. With landscape professionals poised to have a good year, the manufacturers are anticipating the same. Bobcat

tenance and upkeep for them. As the demand increases and contractors build their portfolios, they’re becoming more inclined to purchase high-quality units that will boost productivity and meet their customer’s needs. John Deere: With the uptick in work, the demand for commercial mowers hasn’t slowed down, which is pushing manufacturers throughout the industry to deliver. This increased demand is going to play a role in sales in 2021. Toro: In addition to people spending more time than ever before in their own outdoor spaces, and the desire to enhance and maintain those spaces, we believe that the gradual economic recovery in the U.S. will also have a positive impact on sales in 2021. Additionally, the equipment lineup that we have to offer in 2021 is arguably one of the most exciting rollouts we’ve seen in the landscape contractor segment in recent years.. Q: Battery-powered handheld equipment is making its mark with professional landscapers. How

soon will battery-powered mowers (walk-behind or zero-turn) have an impact on the industry? OPEI: I think it’s already having an impact. We’ve seen several manufacturers introduce battery-powered zero turns in the last few years. Landscape contractors have a limited number of hours in the day, and they’ll adopt technology and equipment that can help them become more efficient and more productive. We’re also seeing larger-scale, commercial robotic, remote-controlled, and other interconnected battery equipment in the space. Battery-powered zero-turns are just the latest innovation from manufacturers to help them do that, and we expect to see more of them this year at GIE+EXPO. Bobcat: I think it’s going to take off, but I think it’s going to be a little bit yet. I recently saw some data in the market that it’s the fastest growing mower type in the market. Over 50% growth, year over year, the last couple of years based on the latest data. There are great times

to have a green machine too. If you’re mowing in certain municipalities, near hospitals or schools or group homes that demand certain hours because of noise restrictions. For those situations, I believe battery-powered equipment is going to end up being somewhat of a norm. We will see some uptick in the volume out in the market as well. Right now, part of the challenge is the charging time for a mower. When we get into the hot summer days and when we’ve got a 12-hour workday, those mowers are not going to last that 12 hours. You can’t have a 12-hour charge time, especially on those long days. As that technology improves, and as the price starts to drop a little bit, because more and more manufacturers will start looking into this, I see growth coming throughout. Cub Cadet: Battery is already having an impact although nowhere near what we are seeing in handheld products. Once manufacturers can overcome concerns around battery life, charge times and performance, I expect we will see some significant shift. Exmark: We’re already seeing the impact of electric mowers, but for now

it’s very localized. Electric mowers are being used in places that have required them to be used. The reality is that most landscape contractors must look at the bottom line. In the end, it must make financial sense for them. It also has to meet contractors’ productivity, power, runtime, and durability requirements. Grasshopper: While battery-powered automobiles are making great strides,

APRIL 2021

battery-powered riding zero-turn mowers are still in their infancy regarding their development and production. There are many unanswered questions such as length of run time, recharging time, battery lifecycles, and disposal and replacement costs of the batteries. Hustler: Battery-powered mowers will become popular once the price and performance are acceptable for consumers. Business owners already have infrastructure expectations of what they want their mowers to do at a certain price point. They may not be willing to pay more for something with more features if that’s not what they need. Contractors could also run into productivity issues if their batteries won’t last. John Deere: A top need for professional landscapers right now is the ability to mow all day long without range anxiety. However, the ability to mow all day at a competitive price is key to changing that perception and having an impact on the industry. With less range anxiety, the ability for these units to compete with gas, diesel, and propane mowers will increase. At Deere, we are continuing to explore options to correctly solve the electrification value equation, while still offering a wide range of gas, diesel, and propane solutions that offer the comfort, reliability, and performance our customers need. Toro: It’s ready now. Like any new technology, battery-powered professional lawn maintenance equipment has been met with a bit of resistance, and rightly so. Arguably, the technology that has been available up until this point didn’t necessarily match up to the performance or run-time of gaspowered machines or has simply been cost-restrictive and impractical. We believe with the introduction of our battery-powered heavy-duty 21-inch mower that we’ve found the perfect balance of power without compromise, at an attainable price point. We believe it will be a home run for landscape contractors who are interested in zero engine emissions, less maintenance, and a quiet run, all without sacrificing performance.

Q: What are the most common wants and needs by landscape contractors for a mower? OPEI: Landscapers need equipment that’s safe, reliable, and efficient, something our member manufacturers continue to bring to market. OPEI members provide a range of equipment with diverse power sources, components, and options to allow landscapers the right equipment for the job. Whether that means autonomous units or wider decks to increase productivity, attachments like plows or brooms to allow for snow-clearing functionality, battery-powered units for accounts like hospitals or campuses, or remote-controlled options for slopes. Bobcat: Landscapers are in the business to make tall grass short. For a good quality cut, you got to have that ticket to get in the game. Right after that, it’s got to be that ease of ownership, which is some of that comfort as the owneroperators are now sitting in the seats more than they used to be. As example of efficiencies, our stand-on mower the ZS4000 is very comfortable to use as a walk-behind machine. They operator platform flips up and latches in place and allows the operator to walk-behind it in areas where that may be needed. Cub Cadet: Landscapers are running their businesses to make a living. Anything that either enhances profitability or prevents downtime is going to attract attention. Basically, they want an affordable mower they can rely on that cuts great at high speeds. Exmark: What landscape contractors need in a mower really hasn’t changed. They need productivity and efficiency, but there’s a lot that feeds into that. Increasing productivity isn’t just about a higher horsepower engine or a larger cutting deck. It’s also quality of cut, because if you have to go back and double-cut properties, having an extra wide cutting deck isn’t worth much. Also, if you have downtime related to service and maintenance, it affects the productivity and efficiency. Grasshopper: Reliability, and main-

COVER STORY tenance and fuel costs are the most important considerations when purchasing a mower. Just as important is the productivity of the mower. Zero-turn maneuverability is a huge time saver. Hustler: Contractors continuously look for mowers that will spend more time in the field and barely any time in the shop. Durability, comfortability, and efficiency are some of the most sought-out features; a mower that will last, get more done in less time and something that will reduce the fatigue of the person riding it. John Deere: Over the past year, mower productivity, efficiency, and comfort continue to be major priorities for professional landscape contractors. Attachments and design upgrades that enhance ride comfort and the ability to complete jobs more seamlessly will continue to be essential for making sales. KIOTI: As with many other types of power equipment, the wants and needs of landscape contractors for mowers come down to two simple yet critical factors: reliability and serviceability. Commercial mowers are an investment that contractors want to withstand heavy usage for at least two to three years. Knowing that a mower is reliable and won’t cause unexpected delays at a jobsite is top-of-mind for contractors. And when it comes time to service the mower, which I do every 50 hours of use, contractors want to be able to do so as efficiently and effectively as possible. A mower that is both reliable and serviceable will go a long way for a landscape contractor. Scag: Higher horsepower really seems to be a big driving force in the marketplace right now. It’s hard to imagine in today’s time that the original Turf Tiger was powered by a 22-hp Kohler or Kawasaki in 1997. Those two brands along with Vanguard have done a great job delivering us and the marketplace plenty of power to meet the needs of today’s machines. tive and comfortable on site. We take a contractor-first approach for the development of all our professional models. It’s all designed with the operator in mind and based on feedback from landscape contractors themselves. Q: What features are manufacturers working on including to improve overall uptime for mowers? Bobcat: Some of the trends that we’re seeing: we have a workforce shortage, the pandemic, the supplier issues, all things like that are trying to fight against our mower market. We’re seeing a lot of things out there about what’s available to help the landscapers today to be most efficient throughout the workday. They have smaller crews now and they’re a little bit more cautious on hiring, but the jobs are there, so the equipment needs to be there, and we’ve got things in our lineup, like a rotating bumper at the backend where the engine is to help with quick clean outs, quick service repairs, to help keep downtime to a very minimum and get them back up and cutting grass. There are a lot of toolless types of pieces we’re seeing on the equipment, plus a lot more owner/operators are out there with less crews, so they want to be comfortable. We are including some anti

vibration platforms, lots of comfortable seats, added armrest features and overall things that are friendly for the operator. Cub Cadet: Let’s face it, manufacturers use essentially the same components to build their mowers. The two areas of their product they can truly differentiate themselves is in frame and deck construction. By reinforcing the areas that take the most beating you can help ensure maximum uptime. Exmark: Improving overall uptime is the result of a small improvements that ultimately add up to significant gains. Our Lazer Z zero-turn mowers are a great example of this. If you keep the oil changed and the filters refreshed, you’re good to go during the busy season. We’ve reduced the number of grease points to four or five, and these only need to be lubricated annually. Now with the introduction of the Tractus airless drive tires, Exmark has essentially made daily tire maintenance and flat tires a thing of the past. Grasshopper: Use of reliable, quality components and high-grade U.S. steel are key components to more uptime. In addition, manufacturers should continually look for ways to minimize and simplify maintenance to get mowers in

the field quicker and stay there longer. Hustler: I would say a larger deck size. The larger the deck, the quicker the mow will be. Hustler’s Super 104 and Super 88 were designed to be agile and meet the demands of the contractors who require them for larger jobs. This is especially beneficial for those in the commercial industry who are facing smaller crews and a high demand for work. John Deere: With an increased focus on maximizing productivity, efficiency, and comfort, the industry is evolving product offerings to provide more solutions for customers. Two general solutions that improve overall uptime include on-board diagnostics and easy access maintenance points. One way that John Deere has addressed this growing focus is with our latest updates to the Z900 Commercial ZTrak lineup. These updates include machine enhancements, expanded deck options, and three

new attachment offerings. Another key feature John Deere provides to increase productivity includes the MICHELIN X TWEEL TURF Airless Radial Tires, available for the John Deere E, M, and R Series ZTrak zero-turn mowers. KIOTI: Given that reliability and serviceability are key to a long-lasting, well-functioning mower, manufacturers are constantly working on seemingly small features that make a mower easier to service. Everything from easy access to air and oil filters to the ability to quickly remove the blades and clean the deck are major time-savers and critical for serviceability. Ensuring that a mower is easily serviceable will extend its lifespan and best meet the needs of landscaping professionals. Scag: A big focus for Scag Power Equipment with respect to uptime has been designing ease of maintenance into every machine. All machines will

need to be worked on at some point whether basic maintenance or unexpected repairs. By making major components more accessible and offering features like convenient engine and hydraulic oil drains, or replaceable front caster extensions to name a few it makes those maintenance or repairs time quicker which keeps customers in the field mowing. Toro: Battery power plays a big role here. The less maintenance that contractors have to perform on a machine means the more productive they are in the field. With the emergence of battery power in the professional landscaping space, especially with our new 21-inch 60V walk behind, we’ve essentially eliminated all the regular maintenance associated with a traditional engine, increasing productivity, and helping boost contractors’ bottom lines.

COVER STORY

WHAT’S CUTTING IN 2021? A

s part of the Green Industry Pros 2021 mower trends coverage, we asked the manufacturer respondents to share insight into their latest mowers and and/or any new products and upgrades coming up for the 2021 season.

Bobcat

With the launch of its new line-up of mowers last fall, Bobcat unleashed it’s “Bring Tough to Turf” tagline. This will be the first full season of cutting for Bobcat’s mower line

and they’ve got a wide range of products from a pure residential mower all the way to the commercial grade equipment. “Our biggest, baddest mower is our ZT 7000, which has some EFI engine choices as well as some standard engine choices,” says Ron Scheffler, senior product manager, Bobcat. All Bobcat’s commercial products this year will have the AirFX deck cutting system on them. Available on the new ZS4000 through ZT7000 zero-turn, the AirFX system is designed with a deep profile and bullnose design to lift the grass to the blade and deliver a uniform cut. “It has proven to provide a very clean deck at the end of the day,” Scheffler says. It is intended to help

landscape contractors be more efficient by letting them cut more grass and get more properties done, minimizing the need to clean-up their machines. “Our AirFX cutting system is really cleaning out underneath that deck giving a great dispersion,” he says. “And now it’s on our ZS 4000 stand-on mowers, which came from a result of a lot of landscapers giving feedback from our standard zeroturn machines and saying, ‘hey, you got to throw this on your stand-on.’” In addition, Scheffler teased the release of some additional accessories for the Bobcat mower line-up in 2021.

Exmark

Lenny Mangnall, Exmark product manager explains that for more than 25-years, the Lazer Z has set the standard in the zero-turn category for Exmark. Exmark offers gasoline- and diesel-powered Lazer Z models with decks capable of cutting up to 96-inches per pass. Mangnall says for 2021, Exmark has updated the largest, most powerful Lazer Z model, the 96-inch Lazer Z Diesel, with a new engine shroud that significantly reduces engine operating temperatures. The revised positioning and increased surface area of the new screen enables the fan to draw cleaner, cooler intake air across the radiator. Also, he says Exmark has expanded availability of the Tractus airless drive tires to come standard on select Lazer Z models and be available as an aftermarket accessory for 60- or 72-inch gasoline-powered Lazer Z models.

John Deere

John Deere Go-To-Market Manager Nick Minas highlighted some of the new attachments to the Z900 ZTrack line-up that have been released for 2021. He says the three newer attachments for the Z900 ZTrak line include a string trimmer rack, cargo tray, and tool carrier. “The string trimmer mount enables the operator to keep hand-held string trimmers on the machine for easy access,” Minas notes. “With the cargo tray, operators can store up to 20 pounds of small, hand-held items, providing more storage on machines. Lastly, the tool carrier allows for standard yard tools, like a rake or a shovel to be carried on the mower, improving efficiency while completing jobs.” Additionally, he says the Fastback PRO Rear-Discharge Mower Deck, available in 60- or 72-inch cutting widths, provides a rear-discharge solution for the Z900 ZTrak gas and diesel zero-turn mower line. “The deck option features heavy-duty, commercialgrade design that is built to enhance productivity while providing a high quality of cut,” Minas notes. “With the rear-discharge design, the chance of damage from objects being thrown from the mower deck is decreased.” Also, he says the design helps minimize the number of debris blown onto the operator, resulting in a cleaner mowing experience, and saving time by allowing operators to mow closely around fixed objects with either side of the deck. “With our full range of solutions, we’re providing customers with the machines they need to power through tough jobs regardless of the challenges they face,” Minas says.

In October 2020, Scag showed a prototype of the recently released SFC30, a 30-inch walk-behind mower, during its GIE+EXPO replacement event, “Scag Live.” “Since Scag Live, not a day went by where our team and dealer/distributor network didn’t talk about the excitement and offer feedback on the product,” says marketing manager Jake Segrin. “We’re really excited with where the product is at as we’ve now started rolling these down our West Bend assembly line.”

Toro

Mitchel Hoffman, marketing manager at Toro says first and foremost, battery-power is here to stay in the green industry. “For the professionals, we’ve had several key launches in 2021,” he says “We’ve seen many contractors gearing up to make the change to battery-powered lawn care equipment as performance expectations begin to meet and exceed what was previously possible. “ Hoffman says with the new Toro 60V 21-inch Commercial Heavy-Duty Mower, professionals can be ready to transition to an engine emission-free lawncare fleet of mowers and tools in the years ahead. “The launch of the 60V commercial mower is just the start to a complete commercial product line-up,” he says. Additionally, Hoffman explains that Toro knows that contractors need to be flexible and nimble in today’s landscaping market. To meet those needs, Toro’s GrandStand MULTI FORCE stand-on mower has a growing attachment system to offer year-round versatility from a single machine. “With more than 100 years of experience, Toro engineers have continuously been developing and designing new tools to help landscape professionals be more productive and profitable,” Hoffman says. “MULTI FORCE tools allow landscape and lawncare professionals to customize their attachments to meet their local, on-the-ground needs.” Also, for the 2021 mowing season, Toro has unveiled its brand-new Z Master 4000 Series of zero-turn mowers. “For contractors looking to take their landscape contracting business to a new level, the all-new Toro Z Master 4000 answers the call, and it all starts with the TURBO FORCE cutting deck,” Hoffman says. “The TURBO FORCE system is forged with an offset 50 KSI 7-gauge high strength steel deck. This deck design has proven itself through over 100 million combined hours of real-world experience cutting through the harshest conditions and all types of grasses.

EQUIPMENT FOCUS

By Ryan Whisner

Why Does A Commercial Mower

NEED AN EFI

ENGINE? O

utdoor power equipment manufacturers are constantly innovating and bringing to market the most efficient equipment. Electronic fuel injection (EFI) for small engines is just one example of that, giving landscape contractors a technology that helps improve efficiency and contributes to fuel savings. A standard within the automotive industry, EFI has become more common on smaller engines, specifically the commercial mowers. Recent data suggests nearly a quarter of the commercial zero turn mower market was running on EFI engines. It is fast becoming the ecologically responsible choice in gasolinepowered engines. “The natural progression to lower emissions and greater fuel efficiency points to more-and-more EFI mowers,” says Brian Schoenthaler, marketing specialist, Grasshopper. Landscape professionals continue to give greater weight to the multiple benefits offered by EFI engines. “A mower with an EFI engine is a great choice for a contractor who needs more power to work through

tough conditions daily,” says Brad Unruh, director of new product development Hustler Turf Equipment. Engine manufacturers in general are showing about a 25% cost reduction in fuel savings with use of EFI technology. For a contractor, that’s not something small to consider, especially as prices go up. “EFI engines make OPE engines perform more like the engine in your car or truck, tweaking fuel usage based on operating conditions to operate at peak efficiency,” says Kris Kiser, president of Outdoor Power Equipment Institute. According to Tom Billigen, training and development manager, Vanguard, the two primary benefits of EFI are the potential for a generous increase in fuel efficiency and engine calibration for peak performance in a wide range of operation conditions. “This provides the operator with consistent performance, quality of cut and intuitive engine operation,” he says. Joshua Sooy, segment director of professional equipment, Cub Cadet, suggests that for the landscapers and large residential owners alike it comes down to a few factors: fuel efficiency, cold weather starting, e-governing that helps keep engine RPMs at an optimal range under load for peak engine performance and eliminating the need to use a choke to start your engine. “While we develop, test and demo our products in the field, we consistently heard how EFI options were important to landscapers,” he says.

EQUIPMENT FOCUS Why EFI?

EFI brings several advantages to the table over its carbureted counterparts. “When talking about commercialgrade equipment a top priority is ensuring the reliability of the equipment,” says Kody Van Sistine, brand manager, Ferris Mowers. “Technologies like EFI ensure more consistent starting in all temperatures, and reduced fuel consumption. That assurance of reliable power means less downtime and more grass being cut.” Among the benefits of an EFI engines is the ease of the starting process and the elimination of concerns about cold weather starts. There’s no choke, so no special cold starting routine is required, and there’s no risk of flooding the engine. Simply start it up and you’re off and running. “Unlike a carbureted engine with a manual choke, an EFI engine starts instantly at any temperature with a simple turn of the key or push of a button,” explains Steve Stenz, turf product manager, Kohler Engines. “This also makes operator training easier.” Additionally, operators at higher elevations don’t need to make adjustments to the engine for it to run well above 3,000 feet. “With EFI, the scaling of proper fuel delivery is calculated the moment the key is turned on,” Vanguard’s Billigen explains. Closed loop EFI systems such as what Kohler Engines use, are selftuning, so they are always making the most power possible. Stenz explains that this means faster load pickup, higher blade speed for better cut quality and faster ground speed, all of which directly increase productivity. For most contractors, the first thing they look at is fuel efficiency, and the ability to reduce their overall fuel-related expenses. Stenz explains that an EFI fuel system is completely sealed from the atmosphere, unlike a carburetor float bowl, to help keep fuel fresh. “This takes away the hassle of stale fuel issues caused by seasonal storage,” he says. “The improved fuel economy of EFI means more time

22 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

on tank with fewer trips to the pump.” EFI engines are more resistant to stale fuel than carbureted engines. In EFI engines, fuel is exposed to far less oxygen, which helps prevent fuel degradation. EFI engines are more capable of burning degraded fuel due to high-pressure injectors that atomize the fuel into a mist creating an ideal blend that burns even

when the fuel is highly degraded. Lower total fuel cost, elimination of carburetor related failures and quicker service all reduce overall operating costs with EFI engine powered mowers. “Ease of use is a benefit that doesn’t get talked about enough,” says Larry Mangnall, product manager, Exmark. “With the limited labor pool, one of the best things about EFI engines on a dayto-day basis is that it’s as easy to start and run as a modern car or truck. It automatically adjusts engine settings to the conditions at hand, so starting and running performance are consistent regardless of altitude or temperature.” Also, he explains that because the fuel mixture is optimized in real time, based on the actual conditions, emissions are reduced considerably. Perhaps the bigger benefit outside of fuel efficiency lies in the plug-in diagnostics capability to analyze the engine. This

results in quickly diagnosing the problem thereby reducing maintenance by having no carburetor to maintain or replace.

Is it worth it?

EFI engines are fuel-efficient and typically give a mower the power it needs when it’s needed, but they aren’t for everyone. Unruh says that’s why Hustler Turf offers both EFI and carbureted models. The mowers with the EFI engines are generally more expensive than their carbureted counterparts which turn some people away. What are the concerns contractors have when considering switching? “There is also a little more complexity in the design of an EFI engine which scares away some contractors because of fear of breakdown,” Sooy says. However, the green industry is continually viewing the technology from a different point of view as time goes by. For example, Exmark has been building EFI-powered mowers for more than fifteen years, and in that time, contractors have seemingly become much more comfortable with the technology. The potential of fuel savings up to 25 percent with EFI continues to draw attention within the industry to make the return on investment feasible. For commercial landscapers, whose engines run for hours at a relatively steady speed, the opportunity to benefit from those fuel savings quickly becomes apparent. “Some people are still wary of the increased complexity, thinking that anytime you add electronics, it’s just one more thing that can go wrong,” Mangnall says. “However, in practice that theory doesn’t pan out. EFI engines are often more reliable than their carbureted counterparts, and when there is a problem, the engine can often tell you what the issue is.” Most manufacturers support the idea that EFI technology should be viewed as an investment into reliability for equipment and performance in the most demanding conditions. “While the entry cost may be more, that is offset by the

Can I fix it?

There is no question that EFI engines are more technologically advanced than their carbureted engines. However, some would argue that with selfdiagnostic capabilities tools and information available, total repair time and labor cost is reduced as they are often easier to maintain. Most engine components, aside from the fuel system, remain unchanged between carbureted and EFI engines. The fuel filter is often the only difference as EFI engines require more advanced filter media and occasionally have a second filter to prevent any impurities from reaching the fuel injectors. This is necessary because EFI systems force fuel through a high-pressure injector that atomizes the liquid into a fine mist,

creating a more volatile mixture while using a lower concentration of fuel. “From a maintenance perspective, EFI engines feature controlled fuel delivery which decreases oil dilution issues and makes them more suitable for long term storage,” Billigen says. “Because the EFI fuel delivery system remains sealed from the atmosphere, fuel degradation is less likely to occur over time. That means far less potential service work needed after extended storage intervals, such as during the winter months.” Van Sistine notes that while more advanced, EFI engines still share several core components with carbureted engines. “This makes most general maintenance unaffected by the additional technology packed into the engine,” he says. “Through more efficient starting, fuel delivery, and the lack of a traditional carburetor and choke, EFI engines are naturally less susceptible

to maintenance-related downtime.” Overall, the EFI engines follow similar maintenance schedules to carbureted engines, relating to keeping the filters clean and the oil changed at regular intervals. “Troubleshooting engine related problems is quicker with EFI thanks to the system’s self-diagnostic capability,” Stenz explains. The additional hardware makes it easier to track and know what maintenance needs to be done. Fortunately, Kiser says manufacturers now have robust dealer support networks and in-the-field training programs to further train operators and repair technicians.

working to develop less expensive consumer options, as well as improve open-loop versions, to help EFI further expand beyond commercial markets. Adding benefit to EFI is the use of Electronic Throttle Control technology, which is already available on various mowers including the Ferris ISX 3300 with Vanguard EFI-ETC engine. “ETC is a mower exclusive feature that uses a flywheel speed sensor to react instantaneously to any applied load which delivers smooth, consistent power in any condition,” Van Sistine says. Eventually, EFI—in one form or another—is going to find its way into nearly every product segment. “In the end, EFI technology is a big win to a commercial landscaper’s bottom line as it means less time spent fixing issues and more time spent making money,” Van Sistine says.

What’s Next?

Currently, EFI is more prevalent on commercial equipment. Consumer EFI does exist, and manufacturers are

Overall, a safety culture within any landscaping or tree care operation is vital. The number one asset of any business is its employees. “Your main goal is to protect the safety of your employees while using a chainsaw,” says John Allen, STIHL Inc. product manager. He recommends contractors live by a simple motto: slow is smooth, smooth is fast and smooth is safe. “Slow down, have that safety mindset, plan your work and work the plan,” Allen says. “That’s really important not only working with a chainsaw, but a lawn mower or any anything that you do in life is just have that safety mindset.” Ben McDermott, Husqvarna senior brand manager professional chainsaws and cutting equipment explains that it is very important for organizations and landscape companies to ensure their employees are properly trained and using the equipment. “This ensures two things, that their employees are returning home safely to their families and that they’re preventing and avoiding any major property damage, both of which can be costly to the business.” Safety when it comes to chainsaws is a mix of personal protective equipment (PPE), training and proper maintenance.

Also, chaps were extremely thick and could be uncomfortable adding another layer of clothing when cutting in 90-degree heat in Florida. “Chaps have really come a long way to offer that same level of protection while reducing the overall weigh and thickness but still meet the safety requirements,” Wilk says. “The stigma is definitely out there but I think everyone does a really good job of designing and taking that user into consideration when it comes to comfort when it comes to the looks and making those things more attractive to the consumer to want to wear those while keeping themselves safe.” Larger corporate landscaping operations generally do a very good job in requiring proper PPE use. I just think we need to talk about safety more often.” In the end, for your own and your employees’ protection, it is worth it. “There’s a ton of great products out there,” McDermott says. “It’s not worth it to shortchange yourself and not invest in these products. If you’re doing this for a living and you’re operating a chainsaw daily, that’s more of a risk and more opportunity for something to go wrong, so protect yourself and invest in that insurance policy of PPE.”

5 points of protection

There are five basic pieces of safety equipment recommended for those using a chainsaw: eye protection, helmet with ear protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps or protective pants and cut resistant footwear. “Everyone out there operating a chainsaw should have those five basic articles of PPE,” McDermott says. “It’s not expensive, it’s very quick and easy to apply those products, and there’s a variety of them to choose from. Just maintain and be safe.” Allen says chainsaw operators should always wear eye protection, that meets the ANSI Z87.1 standard. “That’s one of the things that I see a lot of users doing, wearing just regular old sunglasses that may not have that impact protection built into the lenses,” he says. “Eye protection should always meet that impact standard.” Hearing protection is imperative for

SPECIAL REPORT should also be reoccurring.” Crew members should not only be trained on how to start a chainsaw, but also how to safely operate the chainsaw, different cutting techniques and how to assess the job and the environment around them. Once you have the idea of using proper safety gear, it really comes down to training your employees how to safely operate the chainsaw. “For the most part, just about any kind of contractor or any kind of employee can pick up a chainsaw,” Wilk says. Today, chainsaws are very easy to start, with gas usually on the first couple of pulls or with a batteryoperated tool you have the chain moving with the flip of a switch. “Training is often overlooked by employers, since most workers can pick up a chainsaw, start it and start cutting some wood,” Wilk says.

“They’re designed to be used in a very specific type of application and if you’re not exactly trained on how to hold that saw, and where to position it into the cut, or how to approach the cut, those are all things that can lead to unsafe operating conditions.” Even how to start a chainsaw needs to be reviewed at time. Drop starting, when you literally have the chainsaw in one hand and drop it, letting gravity help pull cord, is a common method out in the field. “It is not a safe way to start a chainsaw, but you see it all the time,” McDermott says. “It kind of makes me cringe now when I see it. Chainsaws should either be started on the ground or locked and secured in between your legs.” From a training perspective, Allen suggests that it is imperative all crew members read the instruction manual before they operate a chainsaw.

“There’s a lot of useful information in there about how to how to deal with kickback, how to maintain your chainsaw and how to properly use it,” he explains. “The first and best source of information should always be the instruction manual.” Once obtaining the basic understanding of the tool, it is important to understand how to select the right tool for the job. “If you’re felling trees, that can typically take a larger chainsaw than if you’re trimming smaller bushes or hedges,” Allen says. “Make sure you’re always using the right chainsaw for the job.” Often, a customer will enter a dealership and start picking saws with 20- or 24-inch guide bars. Upon further discussion, the landscaper is looking to cut down a tree that has only a four-inch diameter.

“You don’t need a 20- or 24-inch guide bar to cut down a four-inch diameter tree,” Wilk says. “A lot of times it’s educating the customer on getting the right chainsaw for the job. You don’t need the biggest baddest saw in the market to make a couple of four-inch cuts.” Similarly, Wilk says some contractors are not sure of the differences between gas or batterypowered units. Owners are again encouraged to visit their local dealers to learn about the different models. “A lot of times they do have demo units available where you can actually touch and feel and see the operating characteristics of the gas versus the batteries to help the consumer make a decision of which power source is best for them,” he says. Practice. “If you’re with a company or an organization, spend some time

getting comfortable with the saw before you operate it” McDermott says. “Or, if you’re training new employees, give them the opportunity to cut and prepare and train outside of the actual work environment so that they’re comfortable with that equipment before they go out to someone’s property or to a job site.” In addition to training, Allen says it is important for contractors to use all their resources. “Especially if you’re new to the industry, or if you’re a small crew, use your local dealer as a resource,” he says. “Most of them have been in the business for a long time and they can recommend the right equipment for your market. Your local dealer is really a very knowledgeable resource that you can go and ask those types of questions to.” Also, Allen notes that there are a variety of resources online for how to maintain your equipment, how to use

it and more. “Use your local dealer and use the incredible depth of information that exists on the internet for education and training purposes to your advantage if you’re unsure,” he says. “Always use that information to help you be safe and productive at your business.” “All of these different types of training and understanding of their cutting conditions really help ensure that your employees return home safely,” McDermott says. “No one is invincible. Every cutting condition every environment is going to change. You can’t predict everything, so invest in the insurance policy of the PPE all of the OEMs make available and then learn how to properly operate your equipment.” Editor’s note: Visit GreenIndustryPros. com for more of this article, where we explore some of the proper maintenance to ensure chainsaw safety.

alking, playing, and mowing stresses lawns over the course of a season. It is an important to give your customers’ lawns and properties the care and attention they need. Aeration is an essential component of maintaining a healthy root system and growth of grass on a property. Understanding the best times and best equipment to get good results are crucial for landscapers to know. Here’s a look at a few factors to consider on making the most of the aeration process.

Timing

The best time to aerate really depends on geography and grass type. “Timing is very important for maximizing turf health so equipment operators

should do their research based on grass type and seasons,” says Gina Putnam, director of sales and marketing Schiller Grounds Care, manufacturer of Classen Turf Care Products. “One definite recommendation: don’t aerate when grass is dormant, such as the winter months.” A customer in the Northeast would aerate at a different time than others in the Southwest. “The growing season of each grass type is usually the best time to aerate but the most important practice in improving turf health IS to aerate,” Putnam says. “Allowing air, water, and nutrients to pass through to the roots ensures they grow deeper and ultimately produce a stronger, more healthy lawn.” If you have cool season turfgrass such

as Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, both spring and fall are ideal times to aerate. Ron Scheffler, RYAN senior product manager, says in spring, aeration should be done between March and May. “Perform fall aeration between August and November,” he says. “Aeration before or at the time of late season fertilization enhances root growth and improves spring green-up and growth.” Conversely, for warm season grasses such as zyosia grass, Bermuda and St. Augustine, aeration is best in midspring to summer, or May to July. Scheffler suggests avoiding aerating when warm season grasses are dormant, as it may encourage weed competition. In addition, he says avoid aerating

warm season grasses during spring green-up, and not until after their first spring mowing.

The right equipment

Aerators come in a vast array of options, from tow-behind to walk-behind to stand-on models. “When selecting an aerator, contractors should assess the types of properties they maintain,” Scheffler says. “The aeration season is a short one, so the right equipment is most important for a quick ROI.” Reciprocating aerators are ideal for most properties due to their small size and flexibility. For larger properties, a drum or rotational aerator may be the best fit. Brandon King, Billy Goat product manager, says reciprocating units provide the ability to achieve the same number of holes per square foot in single pass aeration as a drum unit can in two passes. He says they have variable aeration density which allows for 2 to 10x more holes per square foot in a single pass compared to a drum aerator. “Slowing the drive speed down increases the number of holes per square foot, increasing the amount of soil disturbed,” King says, adding that variable aeration density also permits patch and repair and seed prep in a single pass. He also says turning with a

fatigue because the machine doesn’t have to be lifted to take the tines out of the ground when turning. This helps increase productivity and wear and tear on employees. Scheffler says for larger open areas like homeowner estates, large commercial properties or sports field, tow-behind aerators are likely the most efficient. For smaller residential or commercial properties, a smaller stand-on or pedestrian (walk-behind) aerator will likely give you the best results and easiest maneuvering. “If a contractor services a majority of properties with gates, a narrow aerator might be the best choice, in lieu of a wider one where a lot of time would be spent transporting,” Scheffler says. “Conversely, a stand-on aerator may be

Ultimately, contractors must weigh the cost of a decision to buy and maintain aerators against rental time required to cover jobs. There is always the risk that rental units may not be available. King notes that the volume of jobs that need to be completed could justify a buy decision if there are not enough rental units available in the area.

Successful process

“Aeration should not be done as a standalone agronomic practice,” Putnam says. “Mowing regularly, fertilizing during the appropriate seasons, watering when necessary, seeding for new growth, treating for weeds, diseases, and insects, and removing thatch will promote a healthy lawn.” Prior to moving forward with any aeration, it is important to mark any obstacles on the property such as irrigation heads or any other power or cable lines that run just beneath the surface. Also, King says to be sure to inspect the tines on your aerator to protect from doing a sub-par aeration job. The order of your maintenance practices is also important for peak effectiveness. “A landscaper should mow the lawn before aerating to maximize the effectiveness of aeration, and the lawn should be watered one to three days prior to aerating,” Scheffler says. “The lawn should be moist to allow the aerator tines to slip into the soil easier. Take care to not over water, though.” He says during aeration, landscapers should take the time to ensure safety and proper operation. “Hurried work can lead to turf tear and improper machine use, which often leads to repairs to the lawn and equipment. “If you’re planning to aerate and put down fertilizer/herbicide, make sure to aerate first,” Scheffler says. Applying fertilizer after aeration helps the lawn compete against weeds. Aerating after an herbicide application can reduce the chemical barrier formed by the herbicide, giving weeds the opportunity to germinate.

Also, he encourages contractors to have their crews water the lawn after aeration too, particularly in areas where drought and Durability, ease of maintenance, and ease of use are the top high temperatures considerations when selecting the right equipment for aeration. are common. Billy Goat In terms of any some warm season grasses, adding drought, King notes that aeration that most grasses are safe to leave should not be done during a drought the cores, which helps return their or high heat times of season due to nutrients back to the soil and serve as the possibility of the added stress to a vehicle for grass seed if overseeding. the lawn that would cause damage.
