THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE

THERE GOES ANOTHER ONE

S

ince taking the reins of Green Industry Pros in late April, I’ve seen an increasing number of landscape professionals when I’m out around town. Driving down the road my wife and I inevitably see a pickup truck pulling a trailer loaded with mowers, blowers, edgers and other equipment essential to the trade. Rather than merely identifying them as being possible readers of Green Industry Pros, we have become more engaged in attempting to identify the equipment observed on the trailers. Some of the standouts have been Kubota Tractor Corp., Exmark Manufacturing, Walker Manufacturing, Toro, Echo, Stihl, Little Wonder and Greenworks Commercial. All of the above have recently come up in conversation as I’ve been busy meeting with my staff to make a selection on the Green Industry Pros 2019 Editor’s Choice Awards. Chosen for several factors including innovation, dependability and audience engagement online at GreenIndustryPros.com, the award winners presented in this issue represent models that garner the most interest from end-users and landscape professionals alike. It was a difficult decision to determine what products to select for awards due in part to my current newness to the industry. Before being hired I’m quite certain I would not have known the difference between any of Ryan Whisner (920) 542-1238 rwhisner@acbusinessmedia.com those companies’ equipment or what some of the equipment even does. Now, even my wife knows there are differences between Walker and Cub Cadet yellow as we continue to seemingly see the landscapers all the time. It is similar to those instances when you purchase a new car and suddenly you seem to notice more of that particular model of car everywhere. To the best of my knowledge, there has not been a sudden increase in landscapers in Wisconsin. With that in mind, I decided to do some research on the phenomenon. Per a quick Google search, mental health professionals refer to the concept as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or more commonly, the frequency illusion. It occurs when a word, name or other thing (landscapers in my case) that has recently come to one’s attention suddenly seems to appear with improbable frequency shortly afterwards. Our brains apparently are driven to identify patterns in the chaos that is our daily lives. To establish a pattern, our brain will tell us that new car (or in my case landscape professionals) are suddenly everywhere, even though those things were always there before we noticed. The bottom line, people in your neighborhood didn’t go out and buy the same car as you just because they were inspired by your brilliant choice in transportation. More importantly, people in my neighborhood didn’t just start hiring landscapers because I’m writing about them.

Yanmar to acquire North American loader manufacturer ASV Holdings Yanmar Holdings, has announced Yanmar’s entry into a definitive agreement to acquire compact equipment manufacturer ASV Holdings Inc. a designer and manufacturer of compact track loaders (CTL) and skid steer loaders (SSL). Yanmar is to acquire ASV through the mechanism of a statutory merger. Yanmar will acquire 100% of ASV’s outstanding shares of common stock for total consideration of $70.70 Million, or $7.05 per share. “We believe that the Yanmar Group’s acquisition of ASV will significantly bolster Yanmar’s compact equipment offerings in the loader segment, a product range vital for success in the all-important North American market,” Giuliano Parodi, executive officer of Yanmar Holdings said. “With its highly-skilled workforce and quality CTL/SSL lineup, ASV is a great fit for both Yanmar’s focus on quality, and our growth and expansion plans in the North American and global markets as it will create a comprehensive and global provider of compact equipment with virtually no overlap in distribution networks.”

Andrew Rooke, chairman and CEO of ASV agreed. “Yanmar is a strong strategic buyer for ASV,” he said. “Yanmar shares our vision to provide the highest-quality products, values the long legacy of ASV and is committed to supporting its employees and distribution partners. In addition to maximizing value for ASV stockholders, the merger will create a strong platform for growth and expansion, bringing together two leading brands with similar cultures and creating value. The ASV product is complimentary to the Yanmar portfolio of compact equipment, creating a comprehensive equipment solution for current and future customers." ASV has an independent dealer network throughout North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The company also sells OEM equipment and aftermarket parts. It owns and operates a 238,000 sq.-ft. production facility in Grand Rapids, Minn. "Yanmar Compact Equipment will gain its only manufacturing facility in

North America here in Grand Rapids, Minn., and will contribute its considerable global presence and financial strength, making way for continued product development and innovation within the track loader and compact construction equipment category for years to come," said Rooke. The acquisition, once finalized, will complete the Yanmar’s range of compact equipment products and contribute to its prospects for growth in North America and globally. The transaction is subject to ASV stockholder approval and other customary closing conditions, and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2019. In conjunction with the Merger Agreement, a subsidiary of Terex Corporation, which owns 34% of the outstanding shares of ASV, has entered into a stockholder voting agreement in support of the merger.

ithin the area of debris handling, leaf and debris blowers are constantly evolving and gaining strength, whether they are carried on your back, wheeled or otherwise. There is more demand for the backpack style models as they become more powerful and maneuverable. “Backpacks are definitely more common, and it seems to be the more preferred tool,” BlueBird Turf Products vice president sales and marketing Chris Durig said. In conjunction with the shift from wheeled to the backpack blowers, it appears the debris or truck loader segment of the business also is rapidly growing. “Outside of the blowers, especially if we’re talking debris clean up, in

Landscapers use backpack blowers to navigate around buildings and features, such as shrubs and flowerbeds, quickly moving leaves to the lawn. A backpack leaf blower gives operators the flexibility to weave in and out of these tight spaces with ease, clearing small areas of dry leaves and lightweight debris. The walk-behind or wheeled blowers are designed for larger area wide open, big yards, acreages or baseball fields and soccer fields. Billy Goat Industries blowers have been utilized to clear off tennis courts for NCAA tournaments and other events. Little Wonder models are utilized by the grounds crew at Fenway Park. Little Wonder Monster model truck loaders are self-contained with enclosed trailers that are usable 12-months of the year. Little Wonder

Monster models that are self-contained with an enclosed trailer. “Contractors can buy a unit like that and in the spring take the actual truck loader portion off with four bolts and they have a beautiful hydraulic dump trailer for mulch, stone or whatever,” he said. “They’re able to use that product, 12 months out of the year instead of just a minimal window in the fall season.” The Little Wonder Monster truck loaders feature a patented impeller with serrated edges designed to break down the leaves at ratio up to 15:1. Markowitz said it used to be years ago the debris loaders that were selling were the smaller units with the 14 and 18 hp engines. Now, the three sales managers generally agreed that professional landscape contractors are trending toward the larger 29 and 35 hp engine models. Heller has seen more sales in the 18 hp and above range with the Billy Goat line. “By far we sell the most in the 18 hp range, for two reasons, it fits a nice

price point and it will support multiple crews and you can mount it on a hitch on the back of your truck,” Heller said. For those mid-size units, Billy Goat also offers a custom swing away hitch so the unit can swing away from the truck to allow for easy dumping. Anything bigger than that due to weight and size requires a trailer mount. Heller said for many private contractors the 37 hp is a really nice size

because it picks stuff up so fast and the reduction rate on any of them is up to 12 to 1 decrease in the debris size if the conditions are right. “It seems like more and more your average contractor is migrating into these bigger towable type units versus one that would just mount on a tailgate of a truck,” Markowitz said. “That seems to be more due to the, the labor market. The bigger unit you can buy that’s going to cost you, it may cost more up front as far as the investment, but it’s going to save you money because it’s a little bit less labor use over time.” Overall operation of any of the debris loaders is always a two-person job with one man driving the truck and another manning the hose of the debris loader itself. “One of the biggest challenges in the industry right now is these contractors being able to get help,” Markowitz said. “Anytime you can buy a piece of equipment that’s going to make you more efficient and make your job easier and maybe take the place of an employee or two is a huge asset to their business.” Willis agreed. “That’s the whole game. Anybody can go out there and pick up leaves,” he said. “The whole thing with truck (debris) loaders is getting as much debris on a truck as possible in the shortest amount of time.” ›

quipment trailer brake misadjustments and failures can dramatically increase stopping distances, resulting in increased chance of collisions or loss of control. Properly maintaining your trailer brakes and testing their function prior to hitting the road will help alleviate risks from potential failures. “All brakes should be tested each time you use the trailer by applying them manually if possible (electric and air) at low speed to make sure that you feel them applying,” says Scott Brown,

warranty coordinator, Felling Trailers, Inc. “If applying the brakes manually is not an option, you should perform a couple of low-speed brake applications to make sure you feel the brakes apply.” Annual inspections are also recommended. “A visual inspection of the brake system periodically (once a year or every 12,000 miles) will go a long way in preventing downtime or sitting alongside the road,” Brown points out. downtime or sitting alongside the road. Also take into consideration outside influences, such as the weather conditions. The region where you operate can definitely impact performance, especially cold weather climates where temperatures drop below freezing. In these climates, the brake shoes can actually freeze to the drum. “In cold weather, brakes can freeze to the drum and not release,” Brown elaborates. “We see this a lot with air brakes as they are applied as a parking brake when the trailer is not being used. When pulling out, you should try to make sure all the wheels are turning. You may feel that the trailer seems to be pulling hard. If you do find that a brake is frozen, you can typically get it to release by tapping on the drum with a hammer. If you are still unable to get the brake to release, you may need to pull the brake apart to clean the ice out of the drum, but typically the hammer will take care of it.” Chemicals used in cold weather climates can also pose a challenge. “In cold weather areas where salt/chloride are used on the roads, it is very important to make sure that the brakes are sprayed off to try to flush the chemical out of the brakes,” Brown emphasizes.

“If the brakes are washed out and the temperature falls below freezing, it is a good idea to park the trailer in a warm building to give the brakes a chance to dry off before parking it back outside.” In addition, trailers that sit for prolonged periods may be impacted by corrosion. “Trailers sitting can cause issues with the braking system,” says Brown. “They will start to rust, which causes issues with the parts working freely. If a trailer sits for a while with no use, I have heard of some people who will pull the trailer down the road and apply the brakes just to make sure everything continues to move.” When it comes to maintenance and troubleshooting, there are different considerations for each type of braking system currently used — air, hydraulic and electric. One constant is you want to ensure that the brake shoes, or pads in the case of disc brake systems, have sufficient material thickness and the brake drum, or disc, is smooth and still within specification.

It is important to keep the system clean. “Corrosive environments — climates with excessive rain, salt in the air and snow — can seize up brake pads. Routine trailer cleaning during winter months is recommended. This includes power washing the trailer.” Pay careful attention to slack adjusters. Trailers sitting “Improperly adjusted can cause issues with the braking and improperly system. Make sure trailer brakes are correctly adjusted and working properly. “Set trailer brakes and observe brake pads and slack settings,” says Doyle. “The easiest way is to watch the slack adjusters extend and retract in order to ensure the brakes are functioning. Refer to the slack adjuster manual if you see excessive wear or a need for adjustments.” If your trailers spend a significant amount of time in the yard, you should take extra precautions. “Quarterly operation checks on the trailer are recommended,” says Doyle. “Simply hooking the trailer up and pulling it around the yard can eliminate brake lock-ups and air operation issues.” To maximize uptime, don’t overlook inspections and maintenance. “Consistent inspections, once a week, and routine maintenance are recommended along with the mandated yearly federal inspections,” Doyle notes.

can control. Make sure you are using a compatible brake controller. Electric brakes use electromagnets to actuate the drum brakes. You control the electricity to the brakes with the brake controller in the cab of the tow vehicle and the brake light circuit on your vehicle. If these systems are not working, there are several possible culprits, from poor electrical connections to frozen or worn out components. “Always check the plug first, confirm that there is power coming from the truck and that the trailer plug is free of corrosion and fits firmly into the plug on the tow unit,” says Brown. “If the trailer has sat for a while, the armature can start to rust and/or the lining surface on the drum will rust. Sometimes just lowspeed braking before leaving will clean things up, or you might need to pull the drum off to clean things and lubricate the armature arm.” The electromagnet that activates these brakes is also subject to wear. During routine inspections check the

wear indicators of the electromagnets to make sure they are in good service. “Most brakes now are self-adjusting and only need to be checked once a year. But if you have an older trailer, it is recommended that the brakes are manually adjusted every 3,000 miles,” notes Brown.

Hydraulic brakes rely on clean fluid

One of the more common hydraulic brake systems for equipment trailers are surge brakes. They use the momentum of the trailer to actuate the brakes. Trailer brake controllers Josh Doyle, XL Specialized Trailers vehicle, the more differ in the number of brakes they pressure on the master cylinder in the trailer hitch and the harder the trailer brakes are applied. the trailer brakes from pulsing on and off as the trailer hitch loads and unloads as it is being pulled down the road. Due to the very small orifice opening, it is important to keep the brake fluid in surge brake systems clean. If there isn’t any fluid, you may consider rebuilding or replacing the master cylinder

electric signals from the tow vehicle’s brake controller and applies pressure to the trailer’s hydraulic brake lines. The systems typically utilize a breakaway battery on the trailer that needs to be functional for proper system operation. When there is a problem with these systems, most of the time it is some type of wiring issue such as a loose connection or weak ground. The other likely culprit is that the brake controller is either not in electric-overhydraulic mode or the controller is not electric-over-hydraulic compatible. This is the case with most factory integrated brake controllers. Preventing many issues simply boils down to maintenance. “Hydraulic brakes are relatively trouble free,” Brown comments. “However, they should also be taken apart and inspected once a year or every 12,000 miles.” ›

and wheel cylinders. Don’t just add brake fluid and go back to work. You must find the source of the leak. If the system has the proper amount of brake fluid, check the condition of the brake shoes and make sure they are adjusted properly. Then check that the restrictor orifice is not clogged, the master cylinder is pumping and the wheel cylinder is not frozen. You also need to check that there is no air in the system by properly bleeding the fluid lines. Another type of brake system is the electric/hydraulic trailer brake. It receives electric signals from the tow vehicle’s brake controller and applies pressure to the trailer’s hydraulic brake lines. These systems can be either drum or disc brakes. xamining a compact track loader involves a thorough look in and around the equipment, but it’s what’s underneath that matters most. A tracked machines’ ability to perform in a variety of conditions is its main benefit over wheels, so it’s important to know that it will improve productivity from top to bottom. Undercarriages impact speed of work, user comfort and overall maintenance costs.

Rigid or suspended?

Most undercarriages are either rigid-mounted — also known as solid-mounted — or suspended. Both have pros and cons, depending on the application and desired comfort level. Some manufacturers offer variations or combinations of both. Rigid-mounted systems have little-to-no suspension, and therefore the effect of every bump is transferred through the entire machine and to the operator, causing material to fall from the bucket and wearing on components, such as the track, front wheel and undercarriage frame. Because of the simple design and few moving parts, this style of machine tends to cost less up front than suspended systems. To counter the adverse effects on the operator, a few rigid-frame undercarriage manufacturers offer suspended seats designed to absorb some of the shock. While these seats enhance operator comfort, they do nothing to prevent material loss or component wear. Other designs incorporate bogie wheels attached to high-strength steel leaf springs so

each wheel flexes to absorb vibrations. This offers more comfort than a standard rigid design, but not as much as full suspension systems. Ride control — or loader suspension — is an option to reduce material loss in rigid-frame undercarriages. The system works by using an accumulator as a shock absorber for the loader lift circuit to help keep material in the bucket. However, ride control does little to help with machine impacts and operator comfort. Ride

control can also be combined with some full suspension systems for the best of both worlds: minimal spillage in load and carry applications and maximum operator comfort. Full suspension systems absorb much of the vibration before it gets to the operator or the attachment. This means less material loss and wear, plus faster speeds over rough terrain, allowing for more productivity. Variations of suspended systems each offer a different level of per-

❶ Closed undercarriages require enclosed designs because of track tensioner, wheel and sprocket mounting requirements. The metal enclosure protects undercarriage components to some extent, however, any dirt, rocks or sticks that make it inside the undercarriage becomes trapped, accelerating wear.

❷ The most advanced option is a dual-level system that features independent torsion axles between the undercarriage and

machine, as well as bogie wheels that flex with the track. This combination minimizes vibrations to the machine and operator for improved comfort and ride quality while maximizing ground contact.

❸ With an open-design undercarriage, while debris may get inside, the units are self-cleaning, allowing debris to fall out naturally during operation. formance. Single-level suspension systems include torsion axles and standard bogie wheels, offering a base level of suspension. The most advanced option is a dual-level system that features independent torsion axles between the undercarriage and machine, as well as bogie wheels that flex with the track. This combination minimizes vibrations to the machine and operator for improved comfort and ride quality while maximizing ground contact. A dual-level system also improves traction by keeping more track on the ground. To compare these undercarriages, a northern Minnesota testing facil-

ity used an accelerometer to measure the G-force from a dual-level suspension-equipped compact track loader with six other manufacturers’ rigid-undercarriage machines. Operators maneuvered the machines at maximum speed in low gear over two staggered rows of 3.5-inch-high, 10.5-inch-wide concrete blocks spaced 9 feet apart. The test found the duallevel suspension machine transmitted 6.4 Gs of machine vibration, while the average of the other machines was 34.9 Gs. Another test at maximum speed in high gear over a smooth surface measured 1.8 Gs from the dual-suspension model and an average of 6.5

Gs from the other loaders. In addition to providing the smoothest ride, the dual-level suspension machine was the fastest in each type of terrain, moving at 6.3 mph for the first test and 9.3 in the second. The other machines moved an average of 5.2 mph for the first test and 7.7 mph for the second.

Open or closed?

Another consideration of a compact track loader undercarriage is whether it features an open or closed design, which affects ease of maintenance. Closed undercarriages require enclosed designs because of track tensioner, wheel and sprocket mounting

requirements. The metal enclosure protects undercarriage components to some extent, however, any dirt, rocks or sticks that make it inside the undercarriage becomes trapped, accelerating wear. With an open-design undercarriage, while debris may get inside, the units are self-cleaning, allowing debris to fall out naturally during operation. Because of their accessibility, open designs also are easier to clean than closed designs. Field tests have shown open designs can extend service life of some components by as much as 50 percent. Plus, open undercarriages provide fast access to components for quick replacement of parts such as sprocket rollers and bogie wheels.

What’s the track made of?

Compact track loaders on the market today come with either steelembedded, all-steel or all-rubber tracks. Each offers a different wear life and some are more ideal than others for certain applications. The majority of compact track loader manufacturers offer steelembedded undercarriages made mostly of steel components: Steel

 Internal drive sprockets feature

replaceable steel rollers that fit with molded rubber lugs to move all-rubber track designs. There is no direct wear between rollers and track lugs in internal drive systems, and replaceable sleeves mean operators don’t need to change out the entire sprocket when individual rollers are worn down.

GIP0719_34-37_Undercarriages_rw.indd 36

rollers mesh with steel lugs to move rubber tracks. The steel-on-steel parts crush or kick out stuck material, and the heavy-duty components work together with few other moving parts for durability with little maintenance. Steel-embedded rubber tracks average a 1,000-hour lifespan, but can reach 2,000 hours in the right conditions and if well maintained. Some manufacturers also offer allsteel tracks to prolong wear life in specialty applications. Heavier and more expensive, the tracks are best suited for demanding applications such as demolition, where jagged concrete, rebar and other materials may damage other tracks. The tracks are similar to those on a dozer and offer similar traction, making them good for earthmoving on solid ground. However, their weight and steel cleats require a slow speed to minimize wear and often result in a rough ride and increased risk of damaged terrain. Rather than steel, a few manufacturers build tracks with fiber-reinforced industrial rubber compounds, and wheels with heavy-duty polyurethane and rubber, the same materials used on many military vehicles today.

This combination allows the tracks to excel in flotation and durability, making them ideal for most conditions. No steel also means no rust. When it comes time to replace the track, rubber — which is more pliable and weighs about half that of steel-embedded tracks — is easier to handle. The average all-rubber track life is about 1,500 to 2,000 hours but can be as high as 5,000. In addition, the rubber track’s lower weight allows for higher speeds — as much as 33 percent faster — than steel-embedded rubber tracks, and all at a lower ground pressure. The type of track material also impacts horsepower efficiency. Steelembedded and all-steel tracks create more friction as the steel sprocket teeth engage with steel lugs while protruding through the track, a system that requires more horsepower to move the machine. Since all-rubber tracks don’t use steel-onsteel contact, they build less friction, and more horsepower directs to the hydraulic system and attachment, increasing a compact track loader’s efficiency by as much as 10 percent.

Track derailment

A few undercarriage features can reduce the risk of track derailment. Many manufacturers create tracks with lugs only on the inner edge of the bogie wheels, while some include track lugs on the outer edge as well, which virtually eliminates track derailment by guiding the wheels. Other factors that improve track retention are the number of wheels, the track’s ability to conform around objects and maximize ground contact, the track style and the track tensioner type. Steel and steel-embedded tracks use grease or hydraulic tensioners. These tensioners apply preload to a spring which is necessary to compress and absorb material that is ingested into the track system because the steel makes the tracks inflexible. All-rubber designs, on the other hand, are pliable,

What moves it?

The type of drive system components can also affect maintenance, operating costs and performance. Manufacturers include either external drive or internal drive sprockets, depending on the type of tracks. External drive sprockets move steelembedded tracks via steel teeth that protrude through holes in the track. These systems involve 90 percent of drive torque moving through only one or two sprocket teeth at a time, accelerating teeth wear and creating steel “hooks” over time, which can reduce track life. External drive systems also require operators replace

Bogie Wheels

Bogie wheels greatly affect flotation and, therefore, performance in soft underfoot conditions. Some all-rubbertrack undercarriage machines have as many as four times more ground contact points in their tracks than

steel-embedded-rubber models. This more evenly spreads the unit’s weight, resulting in lower psi and extra flotation on steep, slippery and wet ground, giving contractors more control on snow, ice, mud and slush. Ground pressure on a mid-sized all-rubber track machine, for example, can be about 4 psi while a similarly sized steel-embedded rubber track machine may be 5.5 psi. Lower ground pressure means a lower risk of turf damage, as well as faster and safer work when clearing snow or driving on a muddy construction site, ranch or farm. Low psi and good flotation can even give a compact track loader the ability to drive over snow or mud without sinking. Remember that a compact track loader is more than just its horsepower or feature-packed cab, undercarriage design is just as important a factor. Examine track loaders top to bottom, keeping undercarriage design, suspension, track type and drive system in mind. Different designs can mean varying levels of comfort, performance and — ultimately — return on investment. ❯

s a business owner, you already know how important your reputation is in the landscaping industry. For many of us, we’re only as good as the last job we worked on. What people say about your business matters, and that’s especially true about what customers are saying online. Instead of a happy customer telling five of their friends how amazing your company is, they write an online review and hundreds, possibly thousands, of potential customers see it. Sound great? It is. There is a downside to online reviews too – if you leave a client on not-so-great terms, they can do serious harm to your reputation with a negative review. But just how important are online reviews? How influential are they to potential clients? Is there a way for you to control what’s said about you online? You might think that online reviews don’t really matter to your customers, especially if they can see your work in their neighborhood, visit your website showcasing your best work with photos taken by a professional photographer, all while providing the best value services. If you have a reputation for bad service, all that isn’t worth much. The market has changed, when people are looking for a landscaping pro, they go online. If you’ve invested in your website, it might pop up as the number one result on Google. If

you’ve claimed and optimized your Google My Business listing, it might be the highlighted option on the right of the search results. What happens if Google and social media is riddled with onestar reviews of your company? All that hard work you’ve invested in online has to battle against a bad review from six months ago to persuade a potential client to part ways with their hard-earned money and hire you. While online reviews may seem like a small piece of the bigger picture that makes up your online presence, people are relying on reviews more and more when deciding what companies to hire.

The buying decision from reading your reviews and hiring you is incredibly quick. Customers typically decide yes or no almost immediately. For many people, checking online reviews is the last hurdle for a company to overcome before they hire them. A recent study found 68 percent of people form an opinion of a company after reading between one and six online reviews. An overwhelming 84 percent of shoppers said they trusted online business reviews as much as a personal recommendation from friends or family. Now that’s some serious power of persuasion. As a small business, your online reputation can directly influence your bottom line.

In the digital age, 93 percent of customers say that their buying decisions are influenced by online reviews. Online reviews have major implications on many different things, including: Your website’s ranking on the search engines

Your company’s performance in local search engines Which search results get displayed (and clicked on) Consumer purchasing decisions By the time someone is looking at the reviews of your company, they’ve already decided they need someone that provides your services. If they’re not using Google to find their next landscaping pro, they’re going to be using a review website (Yelp, Facebook, Angie’s List etc.) Half the battle is already won, they know they need the services you provide; they just need to be persuaded you’re the best company to hire.

Every small business owner should welcome and actively encourage online reviews. Had a great interaction with a client? Ask them to leave a review online. If you don’t ask your customers to write online reviews for your business, you’re missing out on a powerful tactic to gain prospective customers’ trust and persuade them to hire your company. You also run the risk of letting the few customers who do write reviews having a huge effect on what everyone else thinks of your business. If hardly anyone writes reviews, one bad review has a much bigger effect than it otherwise would. Before you start asking customers to leave you reviews, you need to claim your business on the main review sites. There’s probably already an entry for your company on the likes of Google My Business, Yelp and Angie’s List – all you have to do is follow the instructions set out by each site and claim it. Once you’ve got your profiles optimized (like adding high quality photos, opening hours and directions to your

main office), you can start directing customers to leave you reviews. The secret to getting happy customers to leave good reviews? Make it simple, make it easy. If something is too difficult to do or takes up too much time, they won’t bother. Give them easy-tofollow step-by-step instructions and link to the profile you want them to leave a review for. Here are some tried, tested and proven simple ways to encourage customers to write online reviews for your business: Add prominent links on your website where customers can review you (like a link to your social media accounts or your entries on Yelp and local directories) If you have an office or shop, put signage up, such as Yelp decals, to let customers know which review sites you’re featured

on and where they can find you A dd a special note onto your receipts, contracts or invoices saying where to review you A golden rule for online reviews: always respond. Always. Let your customers know you hear them. People like to be heard and feel like they’re the only customer that matters to you. If someone leaves you a negative review, respond to them in a positive way. Do not take a bad review as a personal insult. Ask them how you can make their experience better in the future. If needed, apologize for their bad experience, let them know it won’t happen again and you’ve dealt with the problem personally. Whether the person that left the bad review will change their mind on your company is up for debate but

anyone that reads the exchange will see how professional and responsible your company is. Keeping a level head and being polite will help turn a bad PR event into a positive advert for your company.

Getting maximum exposure for your business

Once you’ve managed to secure a positive review from a customer, you want to use it to get maximum exposure for your company. • Promote your latest positive reviews on your social media profiles • Display positive reviews on the homep-

age of your website • Create a case study to highlight the work completed and use the good review as a testimonial • Approach the customer to feature in a testimonial video • Send out your latest reviews as a feature in your next newsletter Getting a positive review from a customer is an amazing achievement and is a boost for you and your team. Online reviews aren’t something to avoid, they should be embraced. Getting online reviews is a opportunity to promote your business, on so many levels, so get started today. ❯

Finance for landscaping business owners of all sizes

Part 6: GETTING LOANS

T

his is an unconventional article on a conventional topic – getting loans. Without knowing your business situation I will assume using cash instead of borrowing is an option. Here was my first lesson in small business finance - cash is your rarest resource and only use it to (1) buy an appreciating asset (building) or (2) something that generates revenue (new equipment). Otherwise do you need it? If the answer is yes, look at your financing options.

Start with a business credit card

The first question is a business or personal loan? This is based on your business entity. If you are reporting to the IRS as a sole proprietor, then the choice is personal because it is not considered a business by many lenders. Subchapter S, LLP’s (Limited Liability Partnerships), LLC’s (Limited Liability Companies), and Chapter C corporations should go the business route otherwise you are guilty of doing what incorporation is trying to avoid, comingling business and personal finances.

Establish a line of credit

The next question is the purpose of the loan. Is it to purchase something or used to ensure cash on hand? If the issue is having enough money during the seasons of low revenue, consider a line of credit. Determine how much money you need to get through these periods

and go to your bank or lending institution to apply. What makes this interesting is the flexibility, a set amount to be spent as you choose. The smart move is to keep it close to zero during the fat months so you can draw upon it during the lean.

Take manufacturer leasing if you can get it

If you are seeking a loan to acquire equipment, instead of owning it why not lease? Some of the best deals can be found with manufacturer leases. They want to move inventory and will do deals that lower either its purchase price or offer you better interest rates. This also allows you to walk away and not deal with selling used equipment.

Make your loan payments early

The third question is your credit rating or ability to take on more debt. If you don’t have any credit, then it may be smart to get a loan even if you don’t need it, in fact when you don’t need it is the perfect time. Never go to a bank or lending institution when you’re desperate, start small when you don’t need a loan so when the day comes, and it will, you have a relationship and track record

to build on. BTW a good credit score adds value to the business.

Alternative financing

This is a jumble of different options that all have strengths and weaknesses. The ones I favor are leasebacks and asset-based loans. A leaseback is where you sell the asset then lease it back for a predetermined period. You wind up with keeping the equipment, just paying more than planned. Your ticket with bad or no credit are assetbased loans. Instead of a signature loan based on your track record, use assets as collateral for the loan. This is the easiest to get because the lender is taking no risk - you don’t pay they take the truck. I didn’t hit on borrowing from friends and family. I figured you have already exhausted this avenue and avoid parties and family get-togethers. ›
