Why THE MINI SKID STEER Belongs on a LANDSCAPING JOBSITE W hy are mini skid steers, compact tool carriers or compact utility loaders (CULs) so popular with landscapers? Let us count the ways. The convenient dimensions of these machines, matched with their rugged yet reliable capabilities, make these units highly sought after in any environment. Their low ground pressure causes less damage to established turf, paving stones, and sidewalks. They are easy to operate and offer a 360-degree unobstructed view to the operator. “CULs are incredibly versatile and can simplify landscaping and hardscaping tasks,” says Kyle Cartwright,

Toro marketing manager. The CUL or mini skid steer is the ultimate Swiss Army knife of landscaping machines. “The mini skid steer’s design allows it to be operated on jobsites where traditional loaders may not be able to access,” says Bret Newendorp, Vermeer product content manager. Mini skid steers (CULs) fill that void by offering models that range from 500 to 3,000 pounds of lift capacity. Among the significant differences between their

larger CTL and skid steer cousins is the 360-degree viewpoint. Most traditional skid steers or CTLs have a rearview camera to accommodate the reduced visibility created by the operator being enclosed in a cab. “They spend half their time going in reverse depending on the attachment, and the size of the jobsite,” says Brant Kukuk. Ditch Witch compact equipment product manager. “A lot of guys I’ve talked to on jobs say they’ve got all kinds of obstacles, so seeing behind you is super critical.” Within a cab, he says it create more of an uncontrolled environment, where dogs

EQUIPMENT FOCUS to want bigger machines.” Cartwright agrees. “Now that CUL technology and performance has caught up with their bigger cousins, SSLs and CTLs, contractors are understanding that investing in a CUL does not necessarily mean sacrificing power or performance,” he says. “With the rated operating capacities of the larger CULs on the market rivaling and, in some cases, surpassing the rated operating capacities of SSLs and CTLs, contractors are quickly realizing that they can enjoy all the benefits in terms of power that they would get from a skid steer coupled with the compact footprint, maximum visibility, simple accessibility and — in many cases — lower overall costs that CULs can offer.” First-time buyers are common for the CUL/mini skid steers in the green industry. “First-time buyers might not have the capital right away to put into the investment,” Redenius says. “By renting, they’re still able to get the job done.” The machines make for great rental opportunities due to their ease of use. However, like the decision whether even to pursue a purchase, the decision whether to buy or rent is not a simple one. “Is your organization looking to make an investment and broaden its horizons, or do you need a machine to finish one odd job?” Burroughs says. “For those looking to expand their business a purchase of equipment may be the best route. It may also be beneficial to rent the unit of interest as a ‘test drive’ to see if it has the capabilities that you’re looking for.” Even after a purchase of a base unit, he says slowly expanding the machines capabilities by renting and utilizing different attachments is a great way to expand into different markets. For companies renting this type of machine frequently, it may be necessary to sit down at the end of the year and sum the total cost of rental for the year. Due to the low cost of these units compared to standard CTL’s or SSL’s, Burroughs says it may be beneficial to

back and realize that a percent of the machine could have been paid off in that same amount of time,” he says.

Factors to consider

Whether you are a weekend DIY’er or a seasoned contractor, picking the right compact utility loader is important. Simple, intuitive controls allow for getting right to work without needing to figure out the machine itself. “I think the dealer should be asking the questions or the customer should be asking themselves the questions,” Redenius says. “Contractors need to understand what they’re trying to accomplish. “Evaluating some of those customer needs first; I think are really important.” Questions such as what will you be lifting? How high does load need to be lifted? Where will the work be done? are among those that need to be answered. “Often the mini loaders are going through gates that are 36 in. wide, so considering where the work will be done is important in choosing the right width of the machine,” Redenius says. It is imperative to be as transparent as possible about projects and applications you hope to use the CUL for. “Let the staff know about what the intended task is and any other tasks you think the equipment may be able to help with,” Cartwright says. “Communicate any site requirements and limitations. Ask questions and be open to suggestions. Rely on the expertise of the dealer about their equipment and best practices.” He notes that dealer staff will know the possibilities and limitations of the equipment to address questions on whether the machine will cut down on labor costs or enable you to finish jobs faster or perform all the necessary functions vital to your operation. The contractor eventually should start with the inevitable “what size of machine should I purchase?” question. Burroughs says determining the size of machine boils down to the rated operating capacity, width, and weight. Today’s CTLs and skid steers have a wide variety

of lift capacities as do the mini skid steers and CULs. One of the largest mini skid steer units, the Ditch Witch SK 3000 has an operating capacity of 3,000 lbs. Understanding your organizations needs is a critical part of the machine purchase process. Products in this segment can range from 500lb capacities to over 3000 lbs., so understanding your operations needs is an essential first step. “Some customers utilize these types of products to replace a wheelbarrow and shovel, while others are heavily dependent on the machines hydraulic capabilities in order to power skid rakes, concrete breakers, or trenchers,” Burroughs says. “No matter what side of the spectrum you are on, comparing machine features and specs is always a good place to start” Larger, more powerful mini skid steer models are an excellent option for many landscape contractors. However, Newendorp says not all larger models have the same footprint. Some manufacturers expanded their machines’ width to accommodate increasing lift capacities, limiting access on some jobsites, many of these units cannot fit through a standard residential gate For example, he says when designing the CTX160 mini skid steer, Vermeer

28 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

GIP0821_24-31_EquipmentFocus.indd 28

took a different approach. “This unit maintains a narrow profile while still being able to lift up to 1,600 lbs. by slightly extending the machine’s length,” Newendorp says. “The vertical lift CTX160 delivers 16.7 gallons per minute of auxiliary hydraulic flow moving heavy material and working ground-engaging attachments.” Besides determining what size, horsepower, and lift capacity they need, contractors should also consider who manufactures the machine and what type of dealer network do they have supporting them. “There is a wide range of manufacturers in the mini skid steer loader space and choosing a qualitybuilt machine supported by a responsive dealer network can make a big difference,” Newendorp says. “Qualitybuilt machines offer durability and can maintain a high resale value. Also, having a dealer network that responses to service needs quickly and can support that machine no matter where it is working is critical for optimizing productivity and getting projects done.” Due to the nature of their work, landscape contractors often work in/ on finished landscapes and seek out machines with lighter footprints.

JULY/AUGUST 2021

“OEM’s measure this footprint with a spec called ground pressure,” Burroughs says. “Ground pressure tells us how much stress we are putting on the terrain when traveling or sitting with the machine at a standstill. The higher the ground pressure the more disturbance or damage is caused to the terrain or turf.” As example, Kubota’s SCL 1000 has a 4.0 PSI rating. “This low ground pressure coupled with the multi bar track design leads to minimal ground disturbance and damage on the job site,” he says. Other options manufacturers offer include radial/vertical lift paths, track or wheeled undercarriage and various platforms for the operators to ride on. Newendorp says radial lift models are popular with contractors using their machines to handle logs and tree branches because they aren’t typically loading material onto a trailer or into the back of a dump truck and instead hauling material to a brush chipper. Similarly, hardscape contractors prefer vertical lift machines with higher lift capacities because they move a lot of concrete blocks. “Auxiliary hydraulic flow is another essential factor to consider when choosing a mini skid steer loader model,” Newendorp says. “Ground engaging

EQUIPMENT FOCUS attachments like a rotary broom, snow blower, Harley rake and tiller require higher hydraulic flow than standard attachments for optimal performance If a contractor plans to use these types of attachments regularly, they will want to choose a mini skid steer loader to handle the additional hydraulic requirements”

All those attachments

One of the hallmarks of the mini skid steer machines is their versatility. “Equipping the CUL with the right attachments, takes it beyond just hauling from point A to B and can accomplish countless tasks quickly and efficiently, making it a popular choice for landscape contractors,” Cartwright says. For example, he says a Toro Dingo with the right attachments can replace a dedicated trencher, tiller, auger, and more. Altogether, Toro offers over 35 different Dingo attachments, including

and plant installations. Also, within the tree service area, stump grinder attachments are popular. “With the wide variety of attachments currently there are a multitude of uses only limited by one’s imagination,” Burroughs says.

Is it worth it?

Ultimately, Newendorp says contractors add equipment like a mini skid steer loader to help increase productivity and efficiency. However, measuring the returnon-investment will look different from one company to the next. He says for some companies, a landscape contractor will add a mini skid steer to replace manual labor, so ROI is measured by how much additional production they can achieve

to the initial investment increased ROI due to the ability to go and accomplish different types of jobs. “Your biggest investment is machine and then fairly inexpensive investments are the attachments and then that opens up a wider range of jobs that they could go do and stay busy with,” Kukuk says. Burroughs notes that an increase in a machine’s productivity can help recuperate the cost of the initial investment at a faster pace. For example, he says the SCL1000 ‘s travel speed is 4.9 mph both in forward and reverse. “This allows operators the ability to get jobs done faster, leading to more finished completed and paid for at the end of the day,” he says. Ensuring proper regular maintenance is also an important factor when considering the machines ROI. “Staying connected with your local dealer and planning out your unit’s service and maintenance

Versatility of UTVS Continues to Fuel POPULARITY & DEMAND T he versality of a utility vehicle (UTV) is its greatest value. It is that element that makes them so popular and continues to fuel demand across the green industry. “With the housing and home improvement industries booming in many areas of the country, contractors are recognizing the value a UTV can bring to their fleet to perform a wide range of tasks in less time and with reduced effort,” says Maureen McCormack, market manager John Deere Gator utility vehicles. “Landscape professionals and other contractors want UTVs that are easier to operate and provide more automotive-like features like instant engagement of 4-wheel drive, enhanced digital displays, and power steering.” A UTV is a smart, more affordable substitution for larger vehicles that may be used on a jobsite. They are also strong and durable with large payload, towing, and cargo capacities so landscaping crews can easily transport any tools and materials needed for the job, regardless of climate. The primary audiences for UTVs often vary by vehicle and manufacturer. For example, some UTVs are designed more for recreational use, and some manufacturers cater more to certain customer segments such as landscapers,

rural property owners or farmers. Customers are paying more for added functionality, driving the growth in the full size UTV category. “The full-size UTV market has been growing at a faster rate than midsize and compact UTV markets,” says Allen Talley, Cub Cadet utility vehicle business segment director. “People want more power for greater payload and towing capacity, more space to haul equipment and materials, and more room to transport people.” Due to the growing sales, some manufacturers are struggling to meet the demand for both accessories and vehicles. “Performance and design are critical for landscapers, so those areas have been the most improved.” says Grant Wilson, director of product management AriensCo. “UTVs offer several benefits on a jobsite to help landscapers work

more efficiently and effectively.” The versality of a UTV adds up to saving precious time and energy. As with many industries, landscapers are facing issues with obtaining and retaining employees. “Time is money, and UTVs can help save labor hours on transportation around large properties,” Talley says. “Crews can get around properties faster, and instead of lugging heavy materials by hand, they can transport

them easily with a UTV. It also saves teams from unnecessary fatigue and makes their daily jobs easier, not to mention putting less wear and tear on the body.”

Ideal landscaping applications for a UTV

KIOTI Tractor product development manager Joel Hicks says as demand for UTVs among landscaping and other professionals has grown in recent years, manufacturers have responded with additional feature and accessory options. For many manufacturers, customers can order a UTV that is specifically built to meet their needs. “The UTV market today has a nearly endless assortment of add-ons that can customize your UTV for exactly the type of work you’ll be performing,” Hicks says. “There’s no denying that landscaping professionals are

Cub Cadet

increasingly viewing UTVs as a powerful, versatile and effective workhorse.” Whether you’re transporting a crew, hauling gear, clearing debris, or moving landscaping material, UTVs serve as a compact and efficient machine for tackling a wide variety of tasks. With lower overall maintenance and reduced wear and tear due to shorter distances traveled, the UTV has potential to be a greater return on investment than a larger piece of equipment. “Because UTVs help landscapers and other contractors complete many different types of projects, they’re frequently taking the place of more expensive, less versatile and less reliable pieces of equipment,” Hicks says. He says a UTV with a large cargo bed, strong weight and substantial towing capacity can greatly improve production. Another thing to think about is traveling around congested areas of land, such as a bustling commercial site or heavily landscaped residential property. “Due to their versatility and maneuverability on difficult terrain UTVs help crews travel across large, rough jobsites better than a work truck and with less potential damage to the turf,” Wilson says. One more example is in irrigation and

lighting applications. UTVs can be helpful in traveling around sites to check sprinkler heads for leakages, or lighting fixtures for damaged wiring. The ability to power a long list of attachments creates an equally long list of productivity-enhancing possibilities. Tool racks, blades, spreaders, snowplow blades and winches are just a few of the hundreds of attachments available to help landscapers and other contractors get the job done. Other options include the hard-coated windshield available on the Gravely Atlas JSV or light kits offered by many manufacturers including Cub Cadet which allow contractors to work late into the summer hours and get more done during the peak season. McCormack says John Deere offers multiple UTV accessories that add additional functionality to a UTVs, such as locking toolboxes, cargo box side extensions that will allow operators to haul large, bulky items like landscape timbers and a cargo box lift kit for some models. “With accessory options to add anything from safety lamps and side mirrors to bed dumping and sun canopy kits, contractors can ensure a UTV meets their power, safety and comfort needs,” Hicks says. “With all these developments, this is an exciting

SPECIAL REPORT market to be part of in the years ahead.”

Choosing a UTV

There are many brands and models of UTVs today, giving customers a mindboggling array of options to choose from. Landscaping contractors should first consider the tasks they are hoping to accomplish with the vehicle. “Landscapers first need to ask themselves how they want to use their UTV because these vehicles are highly customizable,” Talley says. McCormack adds that UTVs are great for contractors who need to maintain large properties, like office complexes, school campuses, or subdivisions. “With a UTV, you can quickly move around the property, efficiently complete tasks like spreading salt on sidewalks, and move heavy material though spaces where a full-size truck would not fit,” she says. If a landscaper is looking to tow and haul, important features to consider are payload, towing capacity, cargo bed capacity. engine type (diesel vs. gas) and the type of terrain

that will typically be driven on. A landscape contractor also needs to think about how big a crew will be utilizing the UTV. A two- or three-man crew may only need a single-row model, while a larger crew likely needs a multirow UTV. “Knowing these three basic things will help a contractor narrow down their choices and prepare them to have a good conversation with their dealer,” McCormack says. Climate is another consideration. Companies like KIOTI have begun to offer factory-installed and/or field option cabs. In-cab climate control can be an important feature if operating in a very hot environment or if utilizing the UTV in the winter to plow snow. “Climate-controlled cabs are in demand because contractors want to be comfortable year-round and get more done despite the weather,” McCormack says. “Ultimately, what contractors are looking for in a UTV is versatility. The versatility of a UTV is ultimately its greatest value.”

It’s important for a landscaper to determine what their needs are based on the projects they’ll be doing both today and in the future. “As always, your dealer is your best resource to provide personalized guidance on selecting the best utility vehicle for your business,” Hicks says. “With the tasks you hope to accomplish in mind, ask your dealer about the ideal UTV for your landscaping applications.” It is easy for a professional user such as a landscaper to make a bad choice when it comes to a UTV.

Service, maintenance and optimizing performance

When evaluating whether a UTV makes sense for their landscaping operation, one thing a contractor cannot overlook is how they will transport their UTV to a given jobsite. To safely haul a UTV, a 14- to 16-foot trailer and a minimum of two 3,500-pound axles with brakes on both axles is necessary. Landscape contractors must also think about the ongoing maintenance and

Utility vehicles are increasingly popular among a variety of customer segments, with farmers, ranchers and landscapers toward the top of the list.

overall care of a UTV to get the longest, most productive life possible. “It depends on usage, but generally speaking a UTV won’t need the same type of maintenance as a professional mower,” Talley says. “It’s more in line with the type of service needed on a transport vehicle like a pickup truck. Owners will have to change the oil, maintain the engin, grease the fittings and things like that.” Contractors should always refer to their UTV owner’s manual to establish a good preventive maintenance schedule for their model. Routine maintenance includes changing the oil, air filters, spark plugs, and the battery. “When in doubt, reach out to your local dealer for assistance,” Hicks says. “Just as with a car, performing routine oil changes, tire checks and other regular maintenance tasks will extend the life of your UTV and ensure it is adding the greatest value to your company.” According to McCormack, in general, you should change the oil and oil filter every 100 hours, or annually. In addition, she says every 200 hours, or annually, you should change the spark plugs and air filter, check the condition of your drive belt and alternator belt, check brake pad wear, and tighten wheel bolts to the correct torque. Around

800 to 1000 hours, or every 24 months, there are other regular service items like changing the transaxle oil and 4WD front differential oil, replacing the drive belt, flushing the brake fluid, and changing the engine coolant. “Owners should keep service records for each machine by documenting the date, engine hours, and what service

was performed to ensure machines are routinely maintained,” McCormack says. Before each use Wilson suggests operators check the fluid levels, lubricate the grease fittings, and check the tire pressure. Since a UTV is typically being asked to do a lot of things on a variety of terrain, proper tire care becomes important.

ithout any statistical data to back it up, the number one vacation destination for consumers in 2020 was likely their backyards. “Before, when people were working at the office all day long, while they did want to enjoy the outside as much, the back and forth to the office limited the time you could spend there,” says Chris Lemcke, Mosquito Hero technical director. “We’re definitely seeing that with more people working at home they do definitely want to enjoy being outside if they have that opportunity to do it.” To further that, many consumers have invested a lot of money turning their backyards into those destinations. “If you’ve got this

beautiful backyard, you’ve sunk a lot of money in for landscaping and for entertaining purposes there’s nothing worse than not being able to use it because the bugs are eating you alive and they’re just harassing you left and right.” says Mark Wilson, CEO of Tick Killz. “This is why a lot more people have now become more focused on treating their property, because they’re spending, and their kids and their pets may be spending more time outdoors.” In the US, an average of approximately 10,000 mosquito-borne disease occurences are reported annually, whereas, tick-borne disease affects as many as 400,000 people a year. Ticks are on the rise in the US due to climate change, and other factors. The milder winters and warmer springs improves tick survival and results in faster population growth and increase the potential

for the transfer of tick-borne disease. “You have a lot of people getting affected every year, the number of cases are going up due to factors from milder winters to the way we build new housing developments that are bringing more people into contact with ticks,” says Allegra Lowitt, general manager, Professional and Tick Divisions, Thermacell Repellents, Inc. “I think there’s an enormous potential for professionals to help protect people.” For a green industry professional, looking to increase their revenue, mosquito/tick control is certainly a great opportunity, because it’s been growing in double digits for a while. To some degree, the Zika virus in 2016 made consumers more aware of mosquito borne diseases just as Lyme disease has made people more aware of tick-borne diseases. “The industry has grown a lot and consumers are just more aware that there are professionals who can treat their yard for pests,” Lowitt says. “In general, people are not protecting their backyards sufficiently from ticks, and the professional is in an important

position to help educate the homeowner and protect them and their family from ticks nad diseases they care that affect over 400,000 people a year.” While consumers can DIY tick and mosquito control, the recommendation is to seek out a landscape professional who knows your yard and understands intimately how to handle mosquito and tick control. Wilson notes that the beauty of the lawn care or landscape professional is they’ve already got a list of core customers that they’ve been working with for a long time. “To me the successful people are those who put together a simple little email burst or flyer that goes out with

your business,” Wilson says. “We know your seasonal billing,” Wilson says. there’s a lot of things that are a part of “You do the advertising, and you do the lawn care that you have to do but may awareness upfront to let people know not be as profitable as some of the things that you’re now offering a tick and order that you might want to do to grow your mosquito control program and right business. We strongly advocate that off the bat you probably picked up just everyone should be offering it where from your existing customer base a lot of interested people. Then of course you can also expand that into very simple marketing techniques like email blasts of certain kinds out to the general marketing public.” “You really want to offer it because it’s an extremely profitable Tick Killz is among the organic-based products available on service to add to the market. LAWN CARE all your documents in order to be able to do this,” Lemcke says. For lawn care in most states, a business license is required. In most states, to operate and go out and apply chemicals, at least one person must be tested at the state level and then workers can be employed underneath that person. Lemcke says a similar rule applies for the mosquito biting fly licenses. However, in some states, the owner and anyone completing applications must be certified. Once you are beyond the certification, the general start-up costs for mosquito application tends to be less than lawn care when talking about equipment.

cost of labor is also low. Typically, a lawn care or lawn maintenance company already has a crew visiting a property on a regular basis anyway, so it’s just the cost of entry. Application can be accomplished in several ways, all the way down to one of those hand pump sprayers that many homeowners have. However, you wouldn’t want to use that unless you’re treating a very small property. For most professionals, the most popular applications method is a mist blower, which is a backpack blower with attached tanks on the top with a tube that connects to the wand to allow product to drip in from the tank and be dispersed in a fine mist through the blower. Lemcke admits the packs are heavy and it’s helpful to have a system set-up to fill it and still have it high enough so you’re not having to lift it up to put it on your back. “You need

Control, not elimination

Ticks and mosquitoes are similar in the sense that you want to understand the customer’s property. Unfortunately, for a newcomer to mosquito and tick control, as with lawn care, each property is slightly different in its makeup, so the application process will vary slightly. Also, it is important to note that when we talk about mosquito control, we talk about control, not elimination. “When we think about tick and mosquito control, we separate them just to make sure that we make this

specific point that most tick control applications are done every four to six weeks,” Wilson says. For good mosquito control, he suggests every three to four weeks, due to the rapid life cycle and airborne nature of the mosquitos. Once the first application is complete, the amount of product utilized per visit is reduced. “The real process behind it is that mosquitoes feed on nectar when they’re not feeding on humans,” Lemcke says. The blowers are used to mist the product underneath the Typically, ticks are found not in the lawn but in the leaves where the mosquitoes perimeter where the yard backs up higher trees, foliage, are during the daytime. rocks walls, wood piles and mulch. “Basically, as you’re Thermacell

LAWN CARE places around the yard. Additional considerations include fences or if a property backs up to a wooded area without a fence, allowing deer access. “For a professional, there are a variety of techniques,” Lowitt says. The difference between ticks and mosquitoes is that in season, a new batch of mosquitoes can be born very quickly, with high periods of activity occurring as temperatures warm from the mid-70s into the 80s. Conversely, ticks are on a two-year life cycle. the use of certain pesticide products, setbacks and frequency of application.” She says Tick Control Tubes are a good complement to sprays and can increase the effectiveness of the service plan because they kill the ticks that are feeding on mice, the key host animal. “Even after using a spray, studies have shown that there are a significant number of ticks that remain on mice because they’re down in their burrows or beyond the range of the spray.”

How much to charge?

“With what you can charge for the spray service, the margins are kind of astronomical,” Wilson says. Consumers recognize the money spent on backyard improvements and the desire to have that space to be a safe place to relax. “Depending on the the size of the yard, for a cost of $3 to $4 a day, the homeowner can hire a professional to treat their yard for less than their daily coffee at Starbucks,” Lowitt says. “It’s an affordable price that allows the homeowner to enjoy their backyard and make the most of their summer.” He says he’s had professionals come to him and say that they would like to walk away from the traditional landscape services, get more trucks and build up the spray business because it’s easier and more profitable. “It’s something that really increases a family’s enjoyment for the summer and is affordable for many families,” Lowitt adds. Wilson agrees. “It’s not just about enjoying the environment, it’s that safety element as well,” he says. From his perspective, it’s a “win” if they can help prevent one, five, 10 or 100 people from getting some disease from a tick or mosquito. “You just don’t want to be bitten by the wrong tick or the wrong mosquito, it’s that simple,” Wilson says. “For a contractor, in my mind, it just makes sense even just to offer this service, even if you don’t turn it into your total focus because I think you’ll start to see the benefit of it.”
