Gwinnett County is the second-most populous county in the state of Georgia and boasts of a population in excess of 800,000 people and includes the cities of Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. Lawrenceville, which is home to Georgia Gwinnett College, is the county seat. The county contains some of the best entertainment options in the Atlanta metro area, including the Aurora Theatre, which boasts of some of the top stage shows, and the Arena at Gwinnett Center, which has drawn in such acts as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. For the sports fans, in addition to being close to major sports teams in Atlanta, Lawrenceville also has minor league teams in the Gwinnett Braves and Gwinnett Gladiators. Lawrenceville is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which ranks as the ninth-largest in the United States. In addition to being one of the most accessible cities to visit in the country, it also serves as the cultural and entertainment hub of the Southeast. The city was the host of the 1996 Summer Olympics and boasts of major professional sports teams in the Braves, Falcons and Hawks, and the city will add a Major League Soccer franchise in 2017. Other attractions include the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest aquarium and a number of museums that highlight the historical significance of the city during both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. Georgia Gwinnett College founded the Office of Athletics with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a truly dominant force within the NAIA. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued ever since, highlighted by back-to-back NAIA championships by the men’s tennis team. The women’s tennis team also won a national championship in its first season of eligibility in 2014, while men’s soccer, baseball and softball have each taken home A.I.I. titles over the past two seasons. All six Grizzly teams have boasted of All-Americans over the past two years, and five enter the 2015-16 academic year currently ranked among the nation’s top 25.

Inaugural Director of Athletics National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that. The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values of Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence. Committed to the idea of continuing professional development, Wilson holds a number of influential positions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and helps shape policy at the organization’s highest levels. He currently serves on the NAIA’s National Administrative Council, as well as on the NAIA’s Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is on the Executive Committee of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII), of which GGC is a member. Wilson’s drive to provide an unparalleled student-athlete experience committed to character-driven intercollegiate athletics has resulted in tremendous early success for the Grizzlies, who currently field teams in baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis. During the program’s very first season of postseason eligibility in 2013-14, four of the Grizzlies’ six teams competed in the NAIA national tournament, each reaching a national top-10 ranking. Eighteen players secured All-American status over the course of the year and the men’s and women’s tennis teams delivered GGC’s first-ever national titles on May 17, 2014, in Mobile, Ala. Through two-plus seasons on the field, the Grizzlies have far exceeded expectations with a 271-109-8 (.699) overall record across all sports through fall 2014, earning a pair of conference championships in men’s soccer, plus one each in men’s tennis and baseball. The Grizzlies also have successfully bid for and hosted postseason championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and baseball, with men’s and women’s tennis joining that list in spring 2015. Student-athletes at Georgia Gwinnett College compete at the state-of-the-art Grizzly Athletics Complex, a $15 million facility which features baseball, softball, soccer and tennis complexes, plus a 25,000-square-foot Athletics building with staff offices, team locker rooms, a weight room, training areas, hospitality suites and academic resource space. Wilson was instrumental in the concept, development and construction phases of the entire project, delivering the Grizzlies one of the nation’s elite athletic complexes. Wilson chairs GGC’s intercollegiate athletics committee, and with Wilson’s leadership, Georgia Gwinnett College successfully completed application into the NAIA in April of 2012.

August 25, 2012 marked the historic Opening Day for Grizzly Athletics, with a pair of men’s and women’s soccer victories highlighting the occasion. Wilson looks forward to the athletic program’s continued growth and progress at a rapid rate. Wilson brought a wealth of experience to his position as GGC’s first Director of Athletics, coming from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He had served as the athletics director since 2003, following a five-year stint as baseball coach. His departure ended 18 years of involvement with Union, from an undergraduate student-athlete to leading the athletics program. During Wilson’s time at Union, the college won 47 Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, four Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference titles, and six NAIA Region XII championships. Union was awarded the AAC Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy for the first time in school history in 2010. Forty-seven players were named NAIA ScholarAthletes, and four players were selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America Team members. Wilson oversaw extensive renovation of Union’s sports facilities, including baseball and football locker room remodels, new scoreboards and press boxes, the installation of a $1 million synthetic turf multi-purpose field, and the expansion of athletic training facilities. The athletics overhaul made Union’s facilities some of the best in the NAIA.

Wilson also grew Union’s department of athletics from 15 intercollegiate programs to 23, while effectively revitalizing the athletic booster club and managing a multi-million dollar operational and scholarship budget. For his accomplishments, Wilson was selected as the 2010-11 NAIA National Athletics Director of the Year in the spring of 2012. He was recognized as the AAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011, the NAIA Region XII Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, and the 2009-10 NAIA Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Wilson’s time as a coach and player at Union were marked by success as well. He posted a 161-106-1 baseball coaching record and was named the 2001 Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, setting a school record with 41 wins. As an undergraduate, Wilson was selected as Male Athlete of the Year while playing for Union. Wilson has a master’s in education from Union College and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He resides in Gwinnett County with his wife, Natalie, and has two children, Drew and Mara.

FACILITIES

The Grizzly Athletics Complex, complete with facilities for baseball, softball and soccer as well as a 25,000-square-foot administration building was completed in 2013. The complex, which is located adjacent to the main entrance to campus, was built in a step-like manner to take advantage of the natural topography and welcome the GGC community and visitors to campus. Grizzly Soccer Complex was the first to open and features a synthetic playing surface, a Daktronics scoreboard and ample bleacher and hillside seating. In the spring of 2013, both the baseball and softball teams opened their stadiums, which feature climatecontrolled press boxes, natural grass fields and full dugouts complete with restrooms. The baseball stadium seats 800 and the softball stadium can accommodate up to 600. The main athletics building hosts the bulk of the GGC coaching staffs and athletics administration. It boasts of locker rooms, conference rooms, a weight room, a sports medicine facility and a dedicated academic support center.

Head Coach Fourth Season Tennessee Temple ‘95 After more than a decade of head coaching experience, Georgia Gwinnett named Steve Decou its first-ever head men’s soccer coach in January of 2012, and in the years since, he’s developed the Grizzlies into one of the nation’s top teams, highlighted by back-to-back A.I.I. championships and NAIA tournament berths in the first two years of the program’s eligibility. Decou, who owns a 163-102-30 record overall as a head coach, has been extraordinarily successful in his three years in charge in Lawrencville, racking up 42 victories to just 10 losses and three ties. In that time, he’s been recognized as the NSCAA Independent Coach of the Year in each of the past two seasons. Last year, the Grizzlies continued to progress on a national level, including a program-best No. 7 national ranking during the regular season before ultimately ending the year at No. 19, marking the second consecutive season that GGC culminated with a top 20 NAIA ranking. With wins over a pair of top 15 opponents during the regular season, the focus once again turned to the A.I.I. Championship, which would take place in a frigid Clinton, Iowa. Battling temperatures that often dropped below 10 degrees, the Grizzlies beat No. 25 Cal State San Marcos in the semifinal on an Ibrahima Sissoko goal just moments shy of the whistle in the second overtime, and returned a day later to pick up a snowy 2-1 win over Houston-Victoria to become the first A.I.I. program to hoist the league trophy in back-to-back seasons since 2010. Following the match, GGC hosted its first-ever NAIA Opening Round for men’s soccer, where the season would end with a loss against eventual national semifinalist Northwestern Ohio. In 2013, the A.I.I. Championship wasn’t quite as dramatic as it was eyeopening. After dispatching CSUSM in the semis, the Grizzlies ran rampant over third-ranked Ashford in the final, winning 3-0 to claim the school’s first-ever trophy in dominating fashion. Georgia Gwinnett’s A.I.I. title sent the squad to the NAIA Opening Round, where a second-half penalty by host and 13th-ranked Embry-Riddle ended GGC’s season in a 1-0 loss. In his first year guiding the Grizzlies program in 2012, DeCou led GGC to a fantastic season in its inaugural campaign. The team posted a stellar 15-2-1 record, while going 7-1-1 at home in Lawrenceville. With less than eight months to recruit and field a team, create a schedule and launch his program, DeCou’s success surpassed expectations in year one as GGC dominated its opponents with a 93-9 scoring advantage.

Senior goalkeeper Greg Hartley, a former NAIA All-American who chose to play his final collegiate season for DeCou after spending 2011 with him at Belhaven University, allowed just eight goals all year in over 1,200 minutes for the Grizzlies. The GGC defense posted 11 shutouts (including a string of five straight) and did not allow more than two goals in a game. DeCou also guided senior forward Tom Butler to a season that won’t soon be repeated. Butler scored 28 goals and piled up 65 points to establish his name in the Grizzly record books. Five different Grizzlies posted 20 or more points on the season while 13 separate players tallied a goal. The squad posted a 12-0 victory over Tennessee Temple on Opening Day on Aug. 25, and remained in charge all season long, reaching six and five-game winning streaks on the year. The Grizzlies’ lone home defeat came to #1-rated MRPI team Auburn Montgomery, as GGC battled AUM to a hard-fought 1-0 loss Oct. 6. The team opened its beautiful new synthetic turf field in the tussle, a place it would win its final four games of the year. Since joining GGC, DeCou has coached 12 All-A.I.I. honorees, 10 NSCAA All-Region performers and two NAIA All-Americans. DeCou came to GGC from Belhaven (Jackson, Miss.), where for the previous five years the Blazers were a national power. During his tenure at Belhaven, DeCou posted five consecutive winning seasons (66-23-7 overall), and he led the Blazers to the top 25 finishes in the final NAIA poll from 2009-11, while the 2010 and 2011 teams ranked in the top 10. DeCou coached his teams to the Round of 16 in the NAIA National Tournament for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Six players were selected as NAIA All-Americans, 10 players were named Academic All-Americans, 22 players were All-Conference selections, one was awarded the 2010 SSAC Newcomer of the Year and one was named the 2011 SSAC Defensive Player of the Year. Prior to his time at Belhaven, DeCou spent 2004-06 at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, where he led the Trolls to a 27-28-4 record. His three year stint was highlighted by a 138-2 season in 2005 that saw Trinity Christian College selected to the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament.

From 2000-03, DeCou served as head coach of Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana, guiding the Foresters to their first winning campaign in eight years in 2001. DeCou was the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2010, following a 16-2-3 season, the 2008 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, following a 14-4-1 campaign and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2005, following a 13-8-2 season. In addition to his involvement with NAIA soccer, DeCou spent three summers coaching in the United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League, serving as an assistant in 2006 and 2007 with the Chicago Fire Premier and as head coach of the Mississippi Brilla FC in 2008. DeCou is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University, where he played soccer and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education. He holds a master’s in sports medicine from the United States Sports Academy. He holds a USSF “A” license and earned the NSCAA Premier Diploma in January 2014. He has served as president of the NAIA Men’s Soccer Association Executive Committee and is a member of the NAIA Ratings Oversight Committee, NAIA National Tournament Selection Committee and NAIA National Tournament Games Committee. The move to Georgia Gwinnett brought DeCou closer to family as his wife, Amy, is originally from Georgia, and his parents are located in Charleston, S.C. DeCou and Amy are proud parents of their daughter, Sadie Jane.

He has immediately helped the Grizzlies achieve tremendous success over their first three seasons, with the team posting an overall 42-10-3 record and spending much of that time ranked among the NAIA’s top 25 teams.

May served as an assistant coach at Rochester Institute of Technology from 2006-09, where he helped lead the team to an overall record of 23-23-6 in Division III competition. He also served as assistant coach at his alma mater, Nazareth College, during the 2004-06 seasons.

May, who was among the first assistant coaches hired by GGC, has been active in helping the Grizzlies to back-to-back A.I.I. crowns. He’s also been integral in the development of 12 All-A.I.I. honorees, 10 NSCAA All-Region recipients and two NAIA All-Americans. In addition to his duties at GGC, he is a member of the USYSA Olympic Development Program Region III staff as he works with the top players in the southeast to select one of four regional teams in the country. May spent the previous three years as the director of soccer operations at the University of Connecticut, where he focused on team travel, promotions, training and fundraising. During May’s time at the University of Connecticut, the team received NCAA tournament bids every year and was consistently ranked among the top 10

Additionally, May spent time coaching and directing for youth club and soccer camp programs, including the Rochester Futbol Club (2007-09) in New York, Yuri Lavryenko Soccer in Rochester, New York (2007-09), the East Hampton Soccer Club in East Hampton, Connecticut (2009-11) and the Northeast United Premier Soccer Club in Storrs, Connecticut (2009-11). As a former player, May was a fouryear starter and a two-year captain, an All-Empire 8 selection in 2001 and 2002 and a regional All-American in 2002. May holds a bachelor’s of arts in political science from Nazareth College in Pittsford, New York, and he has his National Soccer Coaches Association of America coaching license.
