Sometimes, in order to continue to follow your own path, you need to make a change. Other times, a change is necessary to carry on that same path. And we really like changes. We feel the need to change, it is part of our constant desire to amaze and be amazed. We had already anticipated you that something would happen a few months ago within the Snowboard Guide FW 21/22, the first one branded The Pill. Even if we are sorry to abandon a name, the one of Sequence, which has accompanied one of the reference magazines at European level for almost 20 years, behind these pages there are always the same people and the same passion. Over time we have changed logos, layout, paper, graphics. But we did it as a natural evolution of the times. Snowboarding has changed significantly since its origins. Let me tell

you this considering that I’ve been following this world since 1994. Over two decades I have witnessed the developments, facets and renewals of this sport and the industry that follows from it, including print and media. I have seen names disappear, companies evolve and survive precisely because they have been able to keep up with the times and cross the borders of neighboring universes, change towards a new audience and new market needs. That’s why today The Pill Snowboarding is integrated into a broader scenario, the one of The Pill Outdoor Journal. Because in the end, what interests us is to experience the outdoors at 360°. By any means. The logic changes, the offer changes. And thanks to this pandemic, the way of going to the mountains also changes. How many of you, in the last two seasons, have approached the

2

backcountry and splitboard world? How many of you, thanks to this, have broaden their friendships and found new companies? The fact that today I find myself attending the mountains during winter with many skiers is a sign of the changing times. The historic snowboard barriers against all no longer exist. And in all this, companies could not help but chase these needs. The proposal, today, is clear for all to see. Snowboarding is still alive, it’s still here in order to go on growing, changing, contaminating itself with new essences, finding new forms of expression. And we, in the same way, sometimes need a shake to make us realize how dangerous it is to stand still.

Club Sandwich If you have never heard of Club Sandwich, the question is only one: what planet have you lived on lately? And no, we are obviously not talking about the famous American gourmand sandwich! However, do not despair, we’re here to save you from oblivion. Club Sandwich is the latest editorial effort of French photographers Matt Georges and Perly. A totally independent and non-profit project in the form of a limited edition box, shipped directly to your home, which contains five different zines featuring the best of the snowboarding world. The original concept was to show five different riding styles shot by five different photographers, each with their own individuality and originality. In short, a sort of multilayer version of the famous sandwich mentioned above but in a snowboarding key, a gift for all fans of this discipline, of art, design and photography. The first volume of Club Sandwich saw the light in January 2020, in a limited edition box of 500 pieces, in A5 format and with 330 total pages. A real hymn to creativity that has given every artist the opportunity to create and include everything they thought could be appropriate in the page count, from photos to art to design. A choral work of the strongest photographers of the scene. The first edition saw in its pages Andrew Miller and his powder photos, a real black and white essay with curves, lines and natural hits. Rip Zinger with his snow surfing shots, very colorful but quiet at the same time. Cole Navin decided to show the work done for Vans Landline and Together Fore-

ver. Perly, co-founder of the project, with his street photos, and finally the mind behind Club Sandwich, Matt Georges, who decided to immortalize a dry slope in the UK rode by two local riders. The aim was precisely to show how much diversity there is in snowboarding and the idea was so successful that the following year a second volume was released, always following the same "multi-ingredient" form

12

and then also a third, which has just been published in 500 pieces, most of which are already sold out. So if you wish to have in your hands the shots of the most important photographers of the scene, you have to hurry! Inside the box you will find zines, posters, stickers and postcards resulting from the work of Silvano Zeiter, Aaron Schwartz, Sean Kerrick Sullivan, Jake Price, Perly, Marc O’Malley, Jake Durham, Matt Georges, Vince Pagés, Arthur Longo.

Laax Open 2022 When it comes to slopestyle and halfpipe competitions, Laax Open is a strong guarantee of success, thanks to its iconic races in which the best athletes in the world have challenged each other.

The 2022 edition took place last 11-15 January and saw the world’s best freestyle snowboarders from all over the world are taking the reins for the last FIS Snowboard World Cup before the Winter Olympics.

Slopestyle The level of progression was once again pushed to new heights at Laax Open and riders from more than 25 nations tackled one of the most progressive slopestyle courses in the world with a rail section at the top, 14

followed by a pyramid, a roller, two kickers and a quarterpipe at the end. 8 women and 12 men qualified for the finals at Crap Sogn Gion, at 2252 metres above sea level. In the women’s event, 21-year old Australian rider Tess Coady dominated the competition in a thrilling final, while Anna Gasser from Austria and Anika Morgan from Germany took second and third place. Coady, who also won the semi-final race, scored the two highest runs of

the day with creativity, technical precision and flow, showing tricks like a frontside 180 to Switch Backside 360 Butter on the roller, and a Switch backside 900 Weddle and frontside Double Cork 1080 indy on the kicker line, followed by a backside Air on the final quarterpipe feature. In the men’s field the crown went to Sean Fitzsimmons. The relatively unknown American youngster put together the best run of the day with a score of 80.91 points. Coming out of a technical rail and pyramid section, he

showed a frontside Millerflip on the roller feature and then a frontside Triple Cork 1440 Weddle on the first and a backside Triple Cork 1440 Weddle on the second kicker, before finishing off his winning run with a frontside 720 Stalefish. Running for the highest step on the podium were also Norwegian rider Ståle Sandbech, one of the most experienced riders in the field, and American rider Jake Canter who, already in the semi-finals, showed that he enjoyed the Laax slopestyle course. 15

Throwing a backside Millerflip bring back on the roller feature, Sandbech continued his run with a Cab 1260 Stalefish and a frontside 1440 Indy on the kicker line. Finishing off with a stylish Mc Twist Indy, the rider secured his well-earned second place, while the 18-year old American rider ended up in third place with an impressive second final run. Canter showed a Cab 180 Nollie backside Rodeo 540 on the roller feature, followed by a switch backside 1260 Weddle and a backside Triple 1440 Indy on the kicker line.

Halfpipe Under the spotlight also the halfpipe race which took place a few hours later on a 200-meter course. In the women’s race American rider Chloe Kim dominated the competition, with huge airs and technicla tricks, claiming her third Laax victory with relative ease. That win was one of six she’s now rattled off since her return to competition at the start of last season.

Kim led off her first run with a boosted backside air, into an even bigger frontside 1080 tail, then a cab 900 melon, then a switch backside 540 weddle with an uncharacteristic wobble in the awkward axis, which she was then able to recover from quickly and launch a cab 1080 melon on her last hit for a score of 90.25. Just as seen last season in Laax, second place behind Kim was Japan’s Mitsuki Ono, as the talented 17-year-old put down what was likely the best

16

run of her career, while the third place went to Spanish rider Queralt Castellet that won her fourth World Cup career podium in Laax. For the men it was Ayumu Hirano asserting himself as arguably the best halfpipe rider in the world, just four events into his return to competition after a three-and-a-half year absence, by taking his second-straight victory with a truly monstrous first run. Leading things off with a frontside double cork 1440 indy that may have been

THE PILL EVENT PHOTOS RUGGLI

the highest-boosted trick of the night, he then stomped an insanely clean cab dub 1440 weddle, then a frontside dub 1260 indy, then a backside dub 1260 weddle, and finally a frontside dub 1080 truck driver that would score him 93.25.

for a man who needs no introduction. Shaun White wrote one more chapter in the incredible story that is his career in snowboarding in what was, very likely, his last World Cup competition.

Second place for the men went to Switzerland’s own Jan Scherrer, who came through with a magnificent second run that earned him his first career Laax podium at the iconic venue in his home country. Third place

Jones + NoK Skateboards The second life, on the streets, of a snowboard.

Any production cycle, regardless of how efficient, well managed and optimized may be, is always subject to a certain variability. A common reality of all manufacturing companies is the fact that production processes can generate waste, and that waste can be contained, but never completely eliminated. And this also happens with companies that produce snowboards. At Jones, for example, quality controls help eliminate bad apples during production, but it is inevitable, at various stages of the process, to encounter a small percentage of aesthetic or structural defects. In the first case, the board is labeled as "Blem" and sold at a discounted price. In the second case, when the defect is structural, such as excessive rocker or a faulty insert, the board is marked as "Third", cut in half and thrown away. It is considered as an inevitable waste of the production cycle. But a company like Jones certainly is not alone in this scenario. Every snowboard factory in the world generates waste boards that need to be disposed of, giving rise to different effects and impacts. It’s something that Jones analyzed very well in a five-part story that shows the carbon footprint of its own boards. Nobody, of course, likes to throw products away, but up until now there has never been a consistent outlet for recycling structurally flawed snowboards. Adrien Reguis and Vin-

cent Gelin came to the rescue: as engineers and designers in companies in the sector they have experienced this problem firsthand. After years spent among prototypes, factory rejects and warranty returns, they decided to do something: they found NoK, a company based in Grenoble, France, specialized in the production of skateboards. "Working in the industry has opened our eyes to the mass of defective boards being thrown away" says Vincent. “Boards that are still very interesting from a technical and graphic point of view, but since there is no solution to recycle them, they end up in the trash. Seeing this waste season after season made us sick." The decks, obtained using a numerically controlled bench, are equipped with a new grip, trucks and wheels in order to create a unique and high-performance surfer. So far they have realized 1364 products, with a saving of 34.100kg of CO2. It's the ul-

18

timate upcycling cycle for a snowboard that would otherwise end up in some landfill. "Recycling is one of the best ways to give a discarded product a second life" says Adrien. "By using these neglected raw materials, we reduce our consumption and avoid further waste." The flex of a snowboard determines which skateboard shape will be cut out. With a soft snowboard, NoK can realize a 66cm fish cruiser. A stiff one will give life to a 78cm surf cruiser or to a 86cm longboard. Decks are cut from the center of the board, in order to preserve the original graphic and artistic heritage. "The beauty of upcycling lies not only in its positive environmental impact. Upcycling allows for truly unique and limited edition products, as the design of each skateboard depends on the graphics and history of the snowboard from which it was cut." concludes Adrien. And if you think about it, every NoK skateboard is truly a one-of-a-kind functional piece of art.

Loris Framarin Growing up snowboarding He has not yet turned 24 but he is already a world champion, rider of the National snowboard team and with numerous international competitions under his belt, from America to Canada to our Alps. But Loris Framarin is first of all a guy who is passionate about mountains that has found in snowboarding a lifestyle that he pursues day after day. His goal? Continue to improve in order to always be able to express his potential to the fullest. Hi Loris, tell us how this season is going! What you are doing? Where are you shooting? I would say that the season is going pretty well, I feel really good on the snowboard! At the beginning of the season I learned switch back double 1440 and 1620 in Japan, a trick that had never been done before so I am very happy with my creation. I have been training on the glaciers of the Alps and then I did some races in America and Canada. At the moment I'm in Switzerland for another competition and when I have time I go to Laax to train, ride and have fun. You’ve become one of the leading riders of the National team. Can you tell me about your group and what the National team represents for you? My teammates are very important to me, we are all very competitive and this helps us to improve. We've spent most of our time together for many years now and they've taught me a lot: they've helped me grow both on the snowboard and as a person. What are your upcoming medium/

long-term goals? My competitive goal is to win an important contest by showing my riding style and my tricks, like the 14/16 switch, to the whole world. Another goal I have is to create other tricks that have my style. And as always try to film a bit in the park and in some nice spots. European snowboarding is differentiating itself into two factions: one closely linked to contests and competitions, while the other one is much more dedicated to filming

20

and shooting, searching for the essence of this sport. Wouldn't you like to dedicate a season to creating video parts or are you completely focused on contests? Is it really that hard to be able to do both? It’s possible to do both, it’s very difficult but it’s possible. Riders like Rene and Sven did that last season and produced incredible video parts while winning contests. For me it’s definitely a goal to be able to include as much filming as possible in my seasons. The

THE PILL PEOPLE PHOTOS ALESSANDRO BENUSSI

most difficult thing is being able to organize filming trips in the little time I have between one competition and another. Last year after the races I managed to film in some spots in Cervinia with my brother and Dave, I think we will do the same this season too, it will not be a real video part but it’s an important experience that I hope will lead to a big video part one day. For now I'm still very happy with the clips that Dave and I do in the park. You joined the army, for a snowbo-

arder or an athlete in general what does it mean to take such a choice? At the end of last season I joined the army sports group, it was an incredible turning point for my career, thanks to their support I can concentrate 100% on snowboarding. And this has always been my dream since I was a kid. I would like to thank Davide and Patrick for believing in me and in freestyle snowboarding. What set up are you riding with? Every year I am more and more happy

21

to be sponsored by K2: I have found a set up with which I feel I can express myself at my best. As a boot I use the Thraxis but I'm also trying the Orton and I like it very much. I have been using the Formula as a binding for years and I will never change it, I think. My board, on the other hand, is the Afterblack, a very performing but also playful camber model thanks to its flat nose and tail, it is a board with which you can do anything, from park to powder up to carving.

Being Robin Van Gyn There is only one way to drive people jealous: be happy.

Impossible not to be jealous of the life of Robin Van Gyn. Canadian, she grew up in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. When she was a teenager she used to ski, then she switched to snowboarding: she immediately understood that that was what she would do for the rest of her life. From this moment on she began an unstoppable success that would lead her to become a legend. As a child she was a dancer and she played field hockey, she was quite athletic and competitive. She did not immediately try to become a pro: at first the only thing that interested her was to see her photo published on a magazine, a dream that she obviou-

22

sly realized soon. For over a decade, Robin consistently raised the bar of women's freeride snowboarding. She gained experience drawing lines on the powder of Whistler and making huge jumps at a level few women have ever matched. In the meantime, she became a Mountain Guide and worked above all in Argentina: seeing the joy of people after taking them off-piste for the first time was truly fantastic. Her participation in the movies Peep Show and Full Moon, as well as the starring role in Travis Rice's Depth Perception, earned her the prestigious Transworld Video Part Of The Year award. Last winter she returned to competitive

snowboarding, leaving everyone speechless in both Baldface and Alaska, and she won the Natural Selection Tour 2021. She says snowboarding has many facets. Early in her career, she competed in slopestyle and rail jam. She then began to walk the path of the Mountain Guide. Later she devoted herself to outdoor movies. Today her background takes on a new form and each experience translates into the union of the different chapters of her life. Robin is currently working on a series called Fabric that documents some radical women who have changed the rules of the game in outdoor sports to achieve something bigger. Five episodes of 12-20 minutes

made of surfing, skating and snow, all together. A project that has been Robin's dream for a long time. For the next season she plans to focus on the activity as a Mountain Guide (becoming a Mountain Guide in Canada is a very long journey) and spend a lot of time on her splitboard, making many (overnight) trips. Robin has never been in a hurry in her life: she has always preferred to take one step at a time, in order to always learn something new. Just like when she was a teenager, she wants to continue snowboarding for the rest of her life, even when she will no longer be a pro, exploring new mountains and dimensions, and helping people expe-

24

rience incredible backcountry adventures. To any aspiring freeriders and splitboarders she would advise not to run and not to be overwhelmed by the desire to want everything immediately. We slowly become who we are, thanks to the experiences we live, learning to get up after every slap we get from life. And knowing how to say "no" if necessary. Better to do one thing at a time in order to metabolize the teachings of life. And remember that if the goal of snowboarding seems to be unattainable, it really isn't. It will just take many steps to get there, which don't always come quickly or easily. For Robin at least it was like that. Jealous, right?

Traces Thomas Delfino Have you ever thought about leaving and never coming back? Leave and get lost, go to a distant place and start living again, living a new life, only yours, living for real. Have you ever thought about it? Il fu Mattia Pascal, Luigi Pirandello

In 1937 the wolf population in France was considered extinct. In 1992 a pair of wolves from Italy were seen in the Mercantour national park. In 2021 there were about 624 wolves in France.

Searching for the wolf Have you ever heard a wolf howl? The fox's eyes sparkle in the dark. It arrives at night bouncing, crosses the stream and seems to smile at the camera trap camouflaged on a trunk. February is the mating season for this smart animal, which courts its partner with its particular "bark". A small squirrel with a big bushy tail stops to nibble on something and immediately jumps off running. A young fawn moves on the snow with some uncertainty. A wolf approaches and stops right in front of the camera: it has the head of a deer in its mouth. With these unique shots, snowboarder Thomas Delfino accompanies us in the footsteps of wolves, through wilderness. With his splitboard he meets environmentalists who guide us in the interpretation of what surrounds us. The search for true emotions, for an authentic and genuine contact with animals, emerges clearly

26

in the video called Traces: the contrast between peaceful uncontaminated spaces and the nearby society where nobody listens to is clear and makes exploration the translation of an escape, a return to the origins (or perhaps to another dimension) and to the closing of the circle of life.

Find your roots The wolf as mystical incarnation of the savage. Humanity has dedicated books, movies and songs to it and reflected in it his most ancient fears. A great predator of our mountains, suspicious and intelligent, it tends to avoid contact with men, even as a result of the ruthless persecution to which it has been subjected. There have been no cases of attack on humans since 1800, however most of them occurred in particular conditions and often in reality attributable to dogs, and therefore the wolf cannot be considered dangerous for people. The latest WWF estimate says that the Alpine population can be estimated at about

293 specimens, while the Apennine one would count at least 1580 animals.

The urban jungle “In winter, everyone leaves his mark on the snow. Sometimes, in the middle of the forest, we come across wolf footprints...” Whenever Thomas Delfino meets wolf traces, he begins to travel with his imagination. “Where will it be headed? Will these footprints take me to virgin walls, where I could draw my own lines as a snowboarder?” This research offers a new point of view on the mountain and leads us to ask ourselves about the activities we carry out as outdoor enthusiasts and about our impact on the environment. What are the boundaries of the wild world? Do they really exist? Dutch biologist Menno Schilthuizen has conducted interesting research on animals and plants that are invading cities, after concrete has invaded nature. In his book "Darwin comes to town: How the urban jungle drives

evolution" he explains why the wild boars that walk the streets of Rome or Genoa and the shrubs that arise from the cracks in the sidewalks are not the result of the neglect of mayors but the beginning of a new chapter in history: while an increasing number of wild species are carving out new niches for themselves in inhabited centers, evolution is taking an extraordinary turn before our very eyes.

societies, natural environments and wildlife: for this reason it is necessary to identify the best practices that make it possible, changing our behavior if necessary. Wilderness has a fragile balance that each one of us has a responsibility to respect and protect. If Traces or this article inspired you to undertake your own research, please do it respecting nature.

Coexistence

Have you ever heard a wolf howl?

In addition to incredible descents on immaculate white walls and thrilling zigzags among fir trees, through Traces we totally immerse ourselves in the rhythm of nature, going straight to its heart. The message that emerges is an awareness of human interaction with wildlife, an emerging issue globally, a consequence of population growth and the expansion of urban centers that devour wild areas. "Coexistence" will increasingly become a keyword and everywhere it will change human

Exactly here are the headquarters of Union Binding Company, a brand that produced bindings that has changed the concept of what could be described "only" as a technical piece of equipment without an identity. Producing exclusively bindings since 2005, Union became highly specialized in this type of production (today the volume of sales data is close to 200 thousand pieces per year) clearly becoming an authority on the subject, but there’s more: thanks to the vision of the founder Martino Fumagalli, the brand

introduced something unusual when talking about a piece of equipment such as a binding, which until then was marginal: creativity. "The door of the company has always been open: anyone could come in and put an idea on the table.” This is how historical collaborations were born, such as those with American rider Danny Kass, who put everything on the spoiler, from key rings with charms to a binding covered in velvet, up to graphics that are now legendary. But there’s even more: over the years there has been a collaboration with the beer brand Pabst Blue Ribbon (today on eBay one of those bindings can be worth up to 5000 dollars) and with KFC, a Japanese accessories brand that requested the production of purebred leather spoiler (another thing unthinkable today at the beginning of 2022), DDC, ASYMBOL, AIRBLASTER and many others. “There’s this guy in Canada who collect them, he has got about 40 and still look for them anywhere in

28

the world, if he can’t find them in China or Japan, he start pressuring our Seattle office! Some of these collaborations helped us take our company to the next level, in other cases we have helped other brands, because of the fact that we are distributed in more than 40 countries.” The strongest markets are clearly United States and Canada, now closely followed by Japan but, above all, by China where winter sports are really growing fast, instead in Europe lead markets are the ones of Germany, Austria, France and Italy. Martino Fumagalli, who is one of the founder of Union, has over 30 years of experience in the world of snowboarding, and before starting the Binding Company he founded Drake and, later when he sold the brand in the late nineties, he worked for Northwave, where he met the current American partners. From there, the next step was the purchase of the board brand Capita and the creation of Union. “Our first binding has been the Force, and from

there we started working mainly with the United States, which gave us a strong identity. The real big difference from the bindings used back then has been realizing a totally white product with a single logo, a minimal twist that was unprecedented at that time.” Union has a factory in Delebio and owns one in China, but the beating heart of the company is Italian: the research and development department is located here. Here are the 3D printers for prototyping and here are carried out all the resistance tests for new products, here new materials are experimented and innovated: for example, Martino was responsible for introducing some details made in "Forged Carbon". “It is a material that Lamborghini and us started using first. As far as I'm concerned, it's a beautiful story: we have our American offices in Seattle and one day I read in the Seattle Times an article about an experiment they were carrying out at the University of Seattle on car-

bon fibers and there was an Italian who was taking care of it, I called him and the next day we started collaborating. It is a beautiful material, maybe even too much for snowboarding, as it fits on 500.000 euro machines, but using it in snowboard bindings was a great challenge. Another product I'm particularly proud of is the new ULTRA model with a midsole very similar to the one used in running shoes: even the graphics are a bit reminiscent of some models, such as Hoka’s. But the thing I am most proud of is that all our bindings have always been faithful to the first model: there has always been an evolution, never a revolution. Our strength has been to combine style with technical know-how, and bring this combo on an international market.” Both the factory in Delebio and the one in China were built with the aim of being carbon neutral thanks to a powerful system of solar panels, in addition, the factory in China concentrates all the independent suppliers in a single

30

four-floored building. “It is a quite unique thing because there is no logistics and there are no costs or waste related to transport, there is a direct quality control.” And what about raw materials? “We have been working on packaging for next year in order to reduce it as much as possible: we have diminished the volume of a box by 30%. For the soft materials of some binding components, it is easier to use recycled fibers, but for the hard part it is difficult. At the moment we are experimenting with some "green" materials but first they must pass all the various tests to be introduced on the product and on the market, we’re almost there. The greenest thing of our products is essentially one: one of our bindings can last up to 10 years."

The door of the company has always been open: anyone could come in and put an idea on the table.”

Chroma ITW DENIS PICCOLO

P H O T O S S I LVA N O Z E I T E R

Relative realities, dreams & delusion Silvano, tell me something about Chroma, what is this video about? It’s about relative realities, dreams and delusion. And it’s about Severin and snowboarding.

Poly's photos use a painting technique of blurred images, why this choice? This as well was more like a natural evolution of my style of photography. I started shooting follow cams with Fredi K about a decade ago. As the seasons passed, the shutter speeds became longer. With Poly I felt like we're pushing it to a level that allowed us to break out of snowboard photography conventions and rules. This opened up another world for me in terms of taking photos, I felt more free in my doing.

What message does Chroma would like to convey? What kind of snowboarding does Chroma would like to tell? I think Alex’ intention was it to leave the message of the film up for individual interpretation to the spectator. The snowboarding is simple, relatable, but also let’s Sevi’s and the other rider’s styles shine through.

The riders in the video are people you often work with, can you tell me more about your relationship with them? Sevi has become one of my best friends and he’s like a brother to me, so we knew it was going to work out. Also with the other riders everything came together very naturally and unforced. To me, they’re all just amazing humans and friends that happen to be good at snowboarding.

Can you tell me something about Alexander Tank? What kind of guy is he? Alex is a full blood filmmaker and storyteller. He’s a man of strong beliefs and views that also influence his work in a good way. He gives the film his very personal finger print which makes a director’s work outstanding. Lovely dude. How was the project Poly born? We knew from the start that we wanted to create more than just a film project. I had the idea with the flip books after the first season of filming Chroma. It all came together very organically meaning it felt very natural to do this at is just made sense with my style of photography and Sevi’s riding. Now Poly and Chroma are one whole body of work that we’re very proud of.

Are you planning any other projects like this one? For now I have no plans whatsoever, which feels really nice. Poly also feels a little bit like my thesis in snowboarding but you never know what’s coming for you, so I’m open for anything that feels right.

Two vans no plans I T W BY D E N I S P I C C O LO TO A L E X ST E WA RT PHOTOS FEDERICO GREGO

Rusty Toothbrush is not just a crew, a video, an Instagram profile made of young riders who like to shoot videos. There’s a lot more. It is a sort of an art project. Behind it there is not only the vision of one person but of all those who participate in it. We could define it as a real community art project in the form of a video. 36

Alex, where did the idea of traveling on two vans without any kind of schedule come from? The idea of living and traveling in a van was born several years ago. I've always dreamed of having all my friends with me, going wherever we want following winter. It's a very wild way of living, just the way I like it. Did you have to do a lot of work on it? Was it difficult and expensive to renovate it? I’ve bought the van about 4 years ago. Chiara and I, my girlfriend, put together some money and in the end we found a van that co-

sted 2300 euros but it was all broken! We had to replace a bit of everything, ending up spending another 8-10.000 euros over the years on solar panels, battery, fridge, heating, insulation for the winter, shower, etc. In short, little is left of the original van! But in the end it was worth it because now we can truly stay where we want when we want, even during winter. You all ride with Drake boards and Northwave boots. How important was their support in making your dreams come true? There aren’t enough words to describe the love I

37

have for them and the support they have given us all throughout these years. Brand manager Davide Smania and general manager Davide Rossetti have always believed in all our projects, they trusted us and listened to all our feedback, without them we would not be here. Rusty crew is made up of many people now and the fact that we all ride with Drake boards and Northwave boots unites us even more, it makes us all feel part of a big family. The fact of living so many experiences together makes us even more united.

Talking about family, you recently became a dad, how's it going? Is it possible to combine family and snowboarding? Becoming a dad is crazy! Every day is different, the love I have for India, my little girl, grows more and more every day but also it changes the way I see the world, my priorities. Surely she is an addition to our life, we already had a very full life but now it's truly complete. In my opinion it is possible to combine the two things but you must have the right support. At the same time you must learn to choose your own battles, you cannot expect to live the same life as before. It's all a matter of finding the right balance.

What about the crew? Tell me a nice comment on each one of them. The crew has become huge over the years so I will tell you about the protagonists of Two Vans No Plans! Nicholas Bridgman is an animal, when you see him snowboarding it's clear he has a lot of fun. He is a bit crazy, for example, during a trip we found deer antlers and from that moment on he always carries them around: he is a real funny dude. Dusan Kriz sometimes is good, sometimes is bad. He goes from a full party mood to a completely zen one, you never know what the next day will be like. Federico Grego is our filmer and photographer, he’s always in a good mood. He doesn't talk much but when he does you have to listen to him, he

38

says very meaningful things and acts as a glue between us who are all a bit of a diva. For Simon Gruber there is no need for descriptions. The first time I met him, I discovered how different he is from what he seems: from the outside he looks like the perfect athlete, and in fact when he works he is super precise and attentive, but as soon as he sets the board down he is a real mess, always high-spirited. Paula Benito and Sophia Schroll are very smart and super nice girls. Paula always makes us laugh and never stops talking, Sophia is very serious and has a strong personality. Brothers Jake and Joe Simpson are always happy and excited about anything, it's nice to have them around.

“The idea of living and traveling in a van was born several years ago. I've always dreamed of having all my friends with me, going wherever we want following winter. It's a very wild way of living, just the way I like it.”

In the video there is a lot of Italian music, that’s so cool, why this choice? Two Vans No Plans is a real dedication to the Italian snowboarding scene. We filmed it in Italy with many Italian riders and filmers. And I feel Italian too! So it seemed like a good idea to use Italian music. We bought the rights of all the songs because it seemed fair to the artists and they were all happy to be part of this project. In short, we realized a pure Italian project from start to finish and many people have been enthusiastic about this choice.

the past we have always done great premiere tours, but for the project before Two Vans No Plans, however, we decided for various reasons not to do it and I realized that something was missing. After so much effort, if you simply throw the video online, you really feel that the energy of the people watching is missing. These videos have to excite people, inspire them, so seeing these videos all together gives a lot of energy both to us as a team, because we see all our efforts rewarded, but also to the community because it makes it feel alive.

You did a lot of premiere tours around Europe. What is the difference between a real premiere and one on a digital platform? In

Can you tell us something about the board you designed for Drake? The new Drake Battle Rusty is the second generation of board born from

the collaboration of Rusty Toothbrush and Drake. In terms of structure we have added a strip of carbon that gives more pop. I use it for everything from powder to street. This year's graphics stand out, we thought of using a painting by Caravaggio that we had seen in an exhibition to which we added our little touch of irony because we think we should never take ourselves too seriously. What are you planning for next year? This year the crew's vision is to give us more time. Time to find new spots and not necessarily rush to get a shot a day. Maybe we will do a longer project, who knows, it will surely be even cooler than Two Vans No Plans.

Julien Pica Herry A proper reason to keep moving forward ITW TOMMASO BERNACCHI PHOTOS ARTHUR GHILLINI

Lately I’ve been very impressed by the contents of Julien “Pica” Herry, he constantly releases contents about steep descents in the Mont Blanc area, where you need a super high level of mountaineering to go up. The soon to be 37 years old high Mountain Guide from Chamonix is right now one of the most complete splitboarders around, with many first descents on his home mountains and in Pakistan, like the Melguss Peak in the Hunza Valley. Julien is also helping people to access snowboarding and winter sports in general. Together with other mountain experts, he founded Zom Connection, a non-profit organization that helps the development of mountain sports in North Pakistan.

although I have some attraction towards Pakistan I still try to stay as much as possible in my backyard. In the series “Earn your Turn” you say that at a point you started feeling more a snowboarder than an alpinist. Are you still feeling this way? What passion started first: snowboarding or mountaineering? I still feel more a snowboarder than an alpinist, I probably would say I’m a snowboarder who loves being in the mountains. I’ve started with climbing and mountaineering when I was 12 but I was already snowboarding, even though it was not until 10 years ago that I started to become more focused on snowboarding than mountaineering.

I feel that being Chamoniard surely shaped your riding and what you look for in a descent. At 36 years old do you have still the desire to explore your backyard mountains, or do you feel more attracted by some other descents in different areas? I still have the desire to explore my backyard mountains because there’s still a lot to do and, of course, I take less risks here. I’m definitely attracted by some other mountains but right now in 2022 travelling all over the world is not a solution anymore, so

As a Mountain Guide, what is your suggestion for splitboarders who want to step up their riding to more difficult terrains that involve mountaineering skills? My advice would be to start rock climbing to get used to the rope and then slowly go mountaineering in summer when you can’t go snowboarding. You definitely have to go toward climbing and mountaineering and then you can bring that into your snowboarding.

42

43

What is the biggest satisfaction that snowboarding has given you? Snowboarding gave me a passion and a proper reason to keep moving forward so I would say I love being in the mountains and practicing snowboarding when I want.

Your love for Pakistan is well known, in 2020 you have founded Zom Connection, a non-profit organization that helps local communities of the North of Pakistan to discover and start practicing snow sports. How was the idea born? After my accident there in 2019 (a broken vertebrae caused by an avalanche while climbing up), I decided to help local communities by providing them snowboarding equipment. After a first shipment under my name, it felt logical to create an association to go deeper in that project. So, together with some friends we have founded Zom Connection. Zom means Mountain in the local language. We collect snowboards, skis and snow sports equipment here in France and ship them or bring them to Pakistan, then we go there and spend days trying to ignite the passion for the sports and the mountains.

What have been the main difficulties in the realization of Travers des Aiguilles Rouges? Definitely the endurance, we knew we were going to be slow but still we were not sure if we would have managed to do it for 36 hours and with 5000m of elevation, so definitely the difficulties did not come from the steepness and from technical things, but they were mostly about the endurance and how we would adapt our rhythm, how we would manage to rest a bit during the night, but it was nice to face something challenging without being too much extreme in terms of risks taken. I crossed the same range in December 2006 in alpine style over 6 days. It was interesting to see how much faster we would be on splitboards. Knowing the range well, there was a logical link to do, never too steep never too flat, and in case we had to bail it was quite easy to do it any time.

Do you find any link between your home mountains and Pakistan? I do find connections between the people living in the mountains, they share the same passion and respect for nature.

Jess Kimura Learning to drown BY M A R TA M A N ZO N I P H OTO S T Y L E R R AV E L L E & B E N K N I G H T

46

47

Where is up and where is down? Waves are whisking me. I try to resurface but they crush me down. I can’t breathe. I’m drowning. Half Japanese and half Belgian, she is often mistaken for Native American, she says. Jess Kimura is one of the most influential snowboarding elite athlete in the world. She is someone who likes to “keep moving", in every sense: ESPN listed her name among the 50 most influential people in extreme sports, she sponsors and creates events in support of young snowboarders, she won the TransWorld Snowboarding Riders' Poll Awards several times, and broke into cinema, shooting documentaries like The Uninvited, released in 2018, with an all-female production, featuring aspiring snowboarders, women with more talent than budget. She grew up in the powder paradise of British Columbia. At 14 she did her first backflip and found her reason to get out of bed in the morning. She competed in slopestyle, halfpipe and boardercross races, before finding her place in urban snowboarding. She

didn't miss a thing and she became a pro even in the backcountry filed. She worked on a construction site until 2011. She skates and plays the guitar. In her thirty-seven years of life, she risked drowning several times. In no particular order: she was diagnosed with depression, she spent several months in hospital following various accidents, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and her boyfriend, Mark Dickson, died in an accident. Doctors told her that she would never become a snowboarder and they gave her lots of pills to take. She herself thought she was not talented enough. She felt she turned into a robot. She put on several pounds. In the autobiographical video called Learning To Drown, in which Jess talks about mental illness and her death, she is seen driving an old Ford truck bolted to an 1980s Bigfoot RV to Baja, to surf and rehabilitate after an ankle injury.

48

49

Jess, tell me who you are. Taboo word: snowboard. I’m an athlete and a Canadian filmmaker.

many people who have had similar experiences and my same problems. You’re trying to involve young people, especially women, in your video-sports projects, is it a need for love that drives you to do it or are there other reasons? I do this because I want to share everything I have with other people. I managed to become the person I wanted to be when I was younger and I'm proud of that and of who I am. I would like to help other girls, to guide them if I can and maybe make their journey a little easier.

Why is it worth getting up in the morning in your opinion? Sometimes it's hard for me to get out of bed, especially if I have not something fun planned for the day or if I have not a real goal. This is the consequence of my wounds which still hurt a lot. However, I try to force myself to continue to go up and try to have reasons to move forward, beautiful things that are worth living for. Otherwise I know that for me the risk is to sink back into a black hole.

You said you've learned to be alone with yourself. Why is that so important in your opinion? We are stuck inside ourselves, it is the only certainty we have during our entire life. We have to learn to live together with who we are. So I thought I might as well learn to have fun, even alone.

There is something that links surfing to snowboarding. What’s that? Feeling free in a state of continuous flow, simply being able to express yourself with every bit of your body. Doctors diagnosed you with depression and schizophrenia. They said you would never become a snowboarder. "Madness visits me at least twice a day" said Alda Merini, an Italian poet. Who decides who is normal? I think it's normal to be abnormal. It is something that I am discovering day after day after having shared my story and listened to so

Three things you hate? Hate is a strong word! Anyway: I don't like unpacking after traveling, when people use their power to hurt others, and the effects of beauty filters on social media. Who will you be in a hypothetical next life? A surfing bird, if I will be lucky enough.

Carving Revival BY I L A R I A CAV I C C H I

P H OTO S A A R O N SC H WA RT Z

Snowboarders fell in love with it in the nineties, then the hype around carving diminished. Now that it's back in fashion, it could revive the world, and the market, of snowboarding.

53

In the rest of the world this may not be the case but, in Italy, the world and market of snowboarding are certainly not among the most prosperous at the moment. Maybe it’s because of our cultural heritage, after all ours is the home of skiing, or because the funniest things you can do with the board require snow conditions and pristine spaces that we have here, but not in the same amount as in the States, Canada, or New Zealand. Maybe it could be also because everything, even sports and the outdoor world, is subject to fashions. Now, also thanks to great champions who continue to win on skis and the spread of freeskiing and freeriding even among skiers, this is now the dominant discipline on our slopes. But, precisely because our interests are often driven by what is or is not considered cool at a given moment, a discipline that is a niche in the niche is now back under the spotlight: carve snowboarding.

By carving, in the snowboarding world, we mean the type of riding that you get by pushing a lot on the edges when turning, which allows you to draw a more precise line, lean more, enjoy the speed to the fullest and, last but not least, look beautiful seen from the outside. Those who practice basic carving have one goal: never skid and at the same time leave perfectly round and sharp lines on the snow, as if drawn by a pencil. The challenge is to bring the inclination to its maximum, almost touching the slope with your forearms: all this while tracing perfect semicircles, turn after turn, and gaining a lot of speed. Looking for carving videos on YouTube (there are also those who do extreme carving) you will instantly realize that it is a spectacular discipline with a decidedly powerful vibe. Carvers are a rare breed, you don't usually see them on our slopes, but lately the spark has been rekindling for this discipline which could

54

generally help a little the whole movement of snowboarding. Partly because it is a sort of return to origins, when people wanted to recreate the feelings experienced with a surfboard on the snow, and partly because these two years of medical emergency linked to the pandemic have brought back under the spotlight all those disciplines able to connect people more directly and deeply with nature. In addition, requiring somehow different skills than freeriding or simply riding on the track, it is a way to move the performance bar a little further. And if you are one of those who, once you get to the bottom of a slope, turn to check for signs of your own passage, definitely carve snowboarding is the one for you.

ly when that translates into thrust and speed for the next turn. Being good at turning is the foundation of snowboarding: it gives you the basis to discover many other things you may want to get from your board.” What are the places in Europe where you have drawn your best turns? “I think Europe generally has very nice slopes, so it's not so much about where but when that matters. Groomed slopes in the morning and not yet marked are certainly the best: generally 3-4 days after a snowfall they offer a good grip before the snow become too soft or icy. That said, I don't really have a favorite spot, but for carving I like uneven terrains.” How do you explain all the hype that there’s around carving at the moment?

Now, this is the theory: for the practice, in addition to have a weak heart, I’m also not so strong at turning, so to describe those feelings I will use the words of Nicholas Wolken, founder of Korua Shapes.

“I’m not really sure, but I could imagine it has to do with the fact that it's really fun, relatively safe and easy to learn. It has just been forgotten for a few years, so now it feels like a new sport and it piques the interest of snowboarders.”

“I like to feel the power when turning, especial-

Hi Severin, we caught up a couple of years ago for your feature interview in Sequence. How have you been and what have you been up to in the last two years? Thank you for the catch up. Been two amazing years following a vision I had for quite a while. Working on an own film project together with my friends definitely is a dream that comes true.

was one reason why I wanted to do this because I wanted to be in close cooperation with Alex Tank who brought the red line into it and had the lead on the direction. With the technical level that snowboarding has got now, it seams that terrain choice and riding style are really what set riders like you apart from the rest. What style of snowboarding do you look up to and which riders have been influential in your growth? I grew up riding with my friends, we would snowboarding every free minute we had, we pushed each others and just had a good time on and off the mountain. We watched all the Absinthe movies back in the days, and always waited for Nico and Gigi’s parts, later riding and filming parts with them definitely influenced me a lot.

Since we last spoke obviously the pandemic has changed the way we live, in southern Europe for example ski resorts have pretty much been closed the whole time, but it looks like Switzerland has been a bit more relaxed on restrictions, how has it been? Yeah crazy times and I feel sorry for all people who have been locked in. In Switzerland all the resorts stayed open and we were able to ride and film. Due to travel restrictions it seems that many riders have rediscovered the beauty of their local terrain, has this been the same with you or have you always cherished what Switzerland has to offer? I wanted to film the whole project in Switzerland from the beginning. I knew what amazing terrain there is around here and I wanted to spend more time exploring my backyard.

You are the most recent addition to the Vans Snowboard team, how do you feel to be joining such a talented group of riders? Are there any projects on the horizon? I feel very honored to be a part of such an amazing family. Can’t wait for what’s to come with them. I got to spend pretty much the whole last season together with Arthur, riding and hanging with him really fits with what I wanna do and I think the same goes for him, so we’ll try to keep this going as much as we can. A Vans trip to Norway is on the horizon and I can’t wait to go up there.

After many successful video parts with Absinthe, you decided to concentrate for two years on your personal video project, Chroma. How did that go? Working on something with the people I wanted to spend time with and work together with, motivated me so much to go out and snowboard. At the same time it was a big challenge and of course I felt pressured, especially after extending it to two years.

Your longtime sponsor Ride has been pushing the envelope for years with their Pig series, are you rocking them and what other boards are you riding? Always loved to see with what they are coming up with. I love to switch up boards, it helps me to get more creative. I’ve been riding the new Peace Seaker quite a bit lately and i love it, it will be in stores soon!

Chroma is a refreshing mix of cinematic images and experimental editing, were you also involved in the production and post-production side of the project? That

There is more to life than just surviving it. Inside each turbulence there is a calm A sliver of light buried in the darkness. - Crazy for the Storm - Norman Ollestad

Do you feel privileged because of your job? Or is it just a profession like any other? I feel very lucky and I think I am privileged to have so many talented people supporting me in my work. What I do is possible thanks to a combination of elements: commitment, goals, perseverance, talent, dreams, luck, creativity and sharing.

My name is Antti Autti and I am Finnish. I have been snowboarding since 1995 and have been a professional athlete since 2001. I spent the first ten years of my career traveling around the world and competing on an international level. I also went to the Olympics. Since 2010 I have started focusing only on freeriding and exploring this universe. Meanwhile, I shot several movies, such as Arctic Lights, Yukiguni and Closer. My latest project is called Roam and shows an artistic perspective on my splitboard adventures as I follow the ever-changing cycle of light. The idea is to offer a new point of view on the mountain interpreted in a creative way: from the total darkness of the polar night in mid-winter to the midnight sun of the Arctic spring *, Roam brings out the extraordinary contrast of light of northern Scandinavia.

Why should a person watch Rome? If you want to feel like you have been invited to join an incredible adventure at the Arctic Circle, where you have the opportunity to draw your line on virgin powder and experience a brief moment of calm in this world at full speed, then Roam is the movie for you. Is Roam a snowboard movie or an artistic project? Where’s the border? I think it’s somewhere in between. The movie was made to enhance and show the beauty of snowboarding and the nature of the Arctic Circle. We wanted to

From Val Mesolcina to Laax with fury. Elio Fumagalli is 25 years old, Swiss but with Italian roots, he starts snowboarding following in the footsteps of his older brother. The passion however remains and indeed grows, and now there’s no day without a board at his feet. For him, snowboarding means freedom, a real form of expression that does not make a distinction between people but rather accepts everyone as they are. Then it also helps him to distract himself from negative thoughts. Elio, you live and ride in Laax. Why did you end up there? I come from the Italian part of Switzerland, but my father is from Padua, so I also feel a little Italian and I am proud of my origins. I ended up in Laax because I attended the Davos sports school which introduced me to the freestyle scene that is concentrated in this area.

and ended up in the Ticino Freestyle Snowboard Federation where they told me that I could enroll in the school. It is an elite sports school for kids who want to become athletes, at the beginning I didn't know where I had ended up so much that I struggled a bit to integrate and find my personality. At school I met Lucas Baume and with him I began to frequent Laax more and more, understanding that in snowboarding you don't always have to do crazy and dangerous tricks, but you can interpret it in your own way. Although school was challenging and I struggled to find my identity, it gave me the opportunity to practice snowboard every day, even abro-

So it’s true that you attended Davos’ snowboarding school?! What about it? Yes I attended the Davos sports school but I ended up there by chance! I never had the dream of becoming a professional snowboarder, at the time, when I started practicing, I was riding in the various Swiss snow parks

ad, and it changed my snowboarding career. It also allowed me to meet so many amazing people and athletes.

think I know how to convey the passion and dedication I have towards this discipline. I hope to be able to inspire people to be authentic and to interpret both snowboarding and any other activity in their own way, to show who they are and to give color and diversity to their community.

Talking about Lucas Baume, can you tell me something about your relationship and the projects you share? We both attended the sports school of Davos and we immediately got together because, unlike many other kids at the school, we didn't have that strong competitive spirit that pushes some people to want to be better than others. Snowboarding for us is first and foremost fun. Later we then embarked on two different paths for various reasons: Lucas now self-manages his own clips and projects while I decided to devote myself more to filming, freeriding and street riding. But our relationship of brotherhood has never changed.

You shot with many European-level photographers, is there anyone who particularly struck you? I had the privilege of meeting many photographers in the sector because in the end here in Laax we all know each other. If I have to mention one that struck me in particular, I would say Silvano Zeiter with his project Chroma. I was lucky enough to spend a day shooting with him and I saw how crazy a professional he is: with him you can ride as you want, he always manages to take home some epic photos.

It seems that snowboarding is going back to its origins. Freeriding, fast curves on the track, freedom and fun, as if all that are super technical tricks in the park or contests are no longer cool. What do you think about it? I think it is the normal evolution of this sport because competition at some point reaches its physical limits. The creative aspect of snowboarding, on the other hand, is infinite, a bit like art. Giving everyone the opportunity to interpret snowboarding how they want will certainly help to have an increasingly diverse and inclusive community. In the end we are all just kids having fun on a board, each one of us with their own personalities and passions, and this aspect must always be valued. Certainly going towards a more old school direction also allows you to approach many young people who may be approaching this sport for the first time, in order to inspire them to become part of this community.

What would you like do when you’ll grow up? That’s a tough question! Let's say that I prefer to focus on the present without necessarily having to direct my life on pre-established tracks: I’m thinking about snowboarding, doing interesting projects and always remaining open to new fields and passions, such as music. You ride with Funky, what about these crazy guys? I've been riding with Funky for about 7 years and now I consider it like family. All the guys from Funky are my friends, they have a lot of passion for what they do and together we spent some truly unforgettable moments so much that it is difficult for me to even imagine to ride for another brand. The relationship I have with those guys goes beyond the snow world. How do you see the European snowboarding scene right now? I think the European snowboarding scene can boast a lot of great talents. There are many good and passionate guys and each one of them gives his own contribution to the community, both on an artistic and technical level.

What kind of snowboarding do you prefer and why? How would you define yourself as a snowboarder? I don't consider myself one of the strongest snowboarders on a technical level, I don't do crazy things, but I

Because social media and instant content kill a lot of creativity. Our goal was to make a snowboard film which people would remember and ideally want to re-watch. Not something which you forget until the next Instagram post is out.

You directed this movie for Vans, how did it all start? I wouldn’t necessarily use the term “directed”, we actually decided to call it “driven by”! Bruno Rivoire (who’s the team manager for Vans Europe) and me have been talking about doing a project like that for a while but the timing never seemed right until last winter. I guess me taking a bit of a lead on the planning and direction side simply came through sharing ideas and specific visions for this film. I’m really thankful for the trust Vans has in me and for supporting what we think makes a good snowboarding video.

been a great friend of yours for a long time? Everyone involved knows each other and gets along with each other really well, which is super important, I think. The vibes have to be good! Otherwise what’s the point? The crew has to speak the same language (metaphorically speaking) in terms of spots, locations, trick choices, how to shoot things and so on. Otherwise it becomes a nightmare to agree on every aspect about snowboarding. Most of the riders involved have been friends for quite some time. If not that they are new friends now! At a time when everything is shared live on social media, why the decision to work on a movie and on an art project like Oasen? Because social media and instant content kill a lot of creativity. Our goal was to make a snowboard film which people would remember and ideally want to re-watch. Not something which you forget until the next Instagram post is out. We need to keep this cultural aspect of snowboard movies alive. It’s a platform where riders and companies can showcase so much more than just how good they are for a short moment.

Can you tell me about a difficult moment and a particularly exciting one? Music is always a difficult and long process. Making the decisions on what to use and then getting the rights for it can give you a big headache. Every trip and every single day we went out shooting was exciting to us. You never really know what you’ll end up doing. Staying flexible and adaptable helps for sure. How was the selection of the riders of the movie made? Have any of them

We need to keep this cultural aspect of snowboard movies alive. It’s a platform where riders and companies can showcase so much more than just how good they are for a short moment.

How did you decide the spots and places where to shoot? The fundamental factor was to find snow in interesting zones. I personally love to go to places that are hilly and to towns that have a lot of natural speed spots. It makes everything so much nicer and it shows in the riding I think.

Can you tell me about the photographers and filmmakers who followed you? What is your relationship with them? With Vans we are really privileged to work with the best in the game. Matt Georges is Vans Europe’s Staff Photographer and I’m happy to call him my friend and being able to work with him quite often already. He is the best. It doesn’t matter what you end up shooting with Matt, the photos always turn out sick! Alex Pfeffer was the main filmer and editor of Oasen which was a blessing because he’s been on every trip and works his ass off out in the field just like we riders do. So he’s just as involved in every aspect of it. On top of that, he’s an amazing filmer and never misses a shot. I personally really enjoy filming follow cam stuff with him because I think we can claim that he’s one of the best in the game when it comes to that. Also a great friend. So overall I’m really happy, we were able to have this dream cast of people coming together. A dream coming true!

What are your favorite tricks and spots in the movie? I really like Sebi Springeth’s Boardslide around the corner to redirect into the Bank. Also Kas Lemmen’s 50-50 on the big Kink Rail and Dominik Wagner’s switch creeper in Sweden are some of my favorite clips. How is snowboarding changing? What direction is it taking according to your point of view? The progression is crazy. Kids are getting absurdly good that I can’t even keep track anymore. For real, I have no idea about so many up and comers which is a shame. And it’s not like I don’t study the snowboarding world every single day. So I think it’s really hard for a lot of them to find the right platform (besides Instagram) to stand out. I think there is so much more to a rider than just being good. It’s how you do things, you know? Kids should remember that. Be yourself and stand out through individuality and originality.

Are you planning any other movies or art projects in the near future? I hope so! I just need to find the time for it. I’m going to try for sure!
