Napping sounds refreshing and relaxing. In the whole day if we get to shut our eyes off stress or the noise, wouldn’t that feel good? It would feel great. Isn’t it? Vision Of Words Are ‘Prewired’ In The Human Brain Ever thought of how we learned to recognize and connect so well to words without essentially wracking our brains to memorize or learn them? There is a study conducted at Ohio State University and the analyses are made with the help of an Ohio Supercomputer Center. Researchers like Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Zeynep Saygin have done the main work of researching and analyzing. Studies claim that the human brain is made or ‘prewired’ to absorb words and letters right at birth. Later on, this is how the process to read and write is simplified. Having analyzed and studied the brain of a newborn, the researchers found that 19

the ‘visual word form area’ (VWFA) is directly linked to the language network of the brain that can recall visual words before it is even exposed to any language. Zeynep Saygin, senior author of the study and the assistant professor of psychology at The Ohio State University quotes “That makes it fertile ground to develop a sensitivity to visual words -even before any exposure to the language.” This professor further studied how the VWFA is connected to the language of the brain on graduate

However, some researchers had theorized that prereading VWFA is similar to that of a visual cortex that is sensitive to seeing faces, scenes, or other objects, and get selective to words and letters as children learn to read while learning a

They got the fMRI scans of less than a week old babies brains who were a part of the Developing Human Connectome Project and compared it to similar scans from 40 adults who participated in the separate Human Connectome Project too.

Of The Research No 1 - Since the VWFA is just another part of the visual cortex that processes faces, they almost seem similar in every newborn’s parts of the brain. No 2 - Humans need a high spatial resolution to see correctly, while visualizing objects, the properties of looking at faces and words

are almost the same. No 3 - Even in newborn babies the VWFA is functionally connected to the language processing part of the brain and it is not like that of the visual cortex that recognizes faces. No 4 - Even before a human brain is exposed to words, the VWFA is programmed or specialized to visualize it. No 5 - One part of the analysis of this study says that there are some differences in the VWFA in newborns and adults. No 6 - The brain has some connections at birth itself. These develop a functional specialization. No 7 - Further analysis and refinement on the VFWA need to be done after the babies mature.

The pandemic has left everyone frightened. This influenza that was present in 1918 had resulted in millions of deaths and the same has been happening even now because of coronavirus. This virus is easily passing on from one person to another even without showing any symptoms.

As of now, there is no vaccine to prevent this virus or fight against it despite a lot of efforts are being made on making its vaccine. People suffering from health issues or the elderly individuals are facing a hard time due to this virus.

Diabetes patients are at a bigger risk because the effects of COVID-19 on them is even worse. When this virus came up in December 2019, many detailed clinical descriptions were published. In China, there were many individuals suffering with this virus and most of them were between 30 and 79 years old. The rest of them had mild illness, but it was judged to be severe in 14% and critical in 5%. Among them, 2.3% of patients died. Higher mortality rates were found among those ≼80 years old. Especially for those who had cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. The mortality rate of people with diabetes was 7.3% more than the overall population. The ones with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases or diabetes and hypertension were associated with higher mortality rates The data collected from the U.S. as a whole are collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of 28 March, more than 74,000 COVID-19 cases had

However, it was not clear if this didn’t have a good outcome due to insulin or characteristics of the patients for whom it was prescribed is not yet understood. fatigued and overwhelmed after wearing the aromatherapy patches. Their anxiety reduced by 40% and even their stress levels reduced. Researchers had even suggested aromatherapy made nurses feel safer and better in lonely times when they had to work all night in the hospital. Even dropping in a little lavender oil in lotions or rubbing it in between eyebrows made them feel less depressed.

In the Journal of JAMA Psychiatry, after studying the report of 27 people it was observed that more than anti-depressants, hallucinogen psilocybin worked exceptionally well. According to Alan Davis, author of the study and a faculty member at both Johns Hopkins University and Ohio State University, the effectiveness of hallucinogen psilocybin worked 4 times more than any anti-depressant. Apart from this, they even found that this substance can treat depression or anxiety in cancer patients. Earlier, scientists were unsure of whether this treatment would be effective on general people suffering from depression issues or not but now they are trying to research it.

What Did Scientists Study? On different days, two doses of psilocybin were given to patients. They received 11 41

hours of psychotherapy and this drug was constantly being supervised. The participants were blindfolded or had their headphones on while this dose was being given to them so that they can share their experiences about how psilocybin worked on them. A few patients had to get treated immediately, while the rest of them had to wait for 8 more weeks and until then their report would be monitored further. Individuals who had to get treated immediately could see that their depression had reduced when compared to those reports that needed to be monitored further. The change was seen within one day after the session and continued to stay till the second session that took place the next day. According to Dr. Charles F Reynolds III, distinguished professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine and the author of

an editorial that supported the research said, this substance was truly effective in treating depression. Further, he added saying that they were happy to see an improvement in the participants and that would have been one of the biggest expectations of the participants too. Earlier, there were a few hints on psilocybin being a source of treating depression after the FDA approved the anesthetic and party drug ketamine. Researchers are hoping to research more on the safety and efficiency of patients and who is likely to benefit from it. As of now, it is not legal to grow or possess psilocybin without a license from the Drug Enforcement Administration. However, on Tuesday, all the voters in Oregon were okay with the Oregon Health Authority to create a program that offers psilocybin-assisted therapy.
