• JACKRABBIT COACHES • BRAD ERICKSON Head Coach 40th Season Alma Mater: South Dakota State, 1974 The longest tenured coach in South Dakota State University history, Brad Erickson is in his 40th season as the head coach of the Jackrabbit men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Since being named head swimming coach in 1976, Erickson has coached the SDSU men to a North Central Conference championship in 1979 and the Jackrabbit women to an NCC title in 1981. In the 2000-01 season he was named the NCC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet. Erickson has overseen a successful transition to Division I competition, which began during the 2004-05 season. He has helped lead the Jackrabbit women’s squad to a second-place finish at the Summit League Championships in five of the last six seasons, while the Jackrabbit men have earned a pair of runner-up finishes. At the 2011 Summit League Championships, Erickson was named women's coach of the year after SDSU placed second. Erickson added Summit League Men's Coach of the Year honors to his list of accomplishments in 2012 after leading the Jackrabbit men to a second-place finish at the Summit League Championships in Rochester, Mich. During his career, Erickson has coached swimmers and divers who have gone on to win more than 60 individual conference titles and 10 relay championships. Four of his swimmers have earned All-America recognition. In the fall of 2002, Erickson was honored with SDSU’s Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDSU alumnus in the field of education and coaching. Erickson’s teams also have performed well in the classroom, regularly receiving recognition as Scholar All-America Teams from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for having a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during a semester. A 1974 graduate of South Dakota State, Erickson became the first Jackrabbit swimmer to compete at the NCAA Division II Championships, as a junior. The Arlington, South Dakota, native won three North Central Conference titles, winning the 200-yard breaststroke twice and the 100-yard breaststroke once. Widely respected in the coaching community, Erickson has continued to represent SDSU at NCAA swimming championships during his career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I women’s and men’s championships from 1984-2010. He also has served as the NCAA Division II Championships coordinator since 1997. In addition, Erickson served on the NCAA Women’s Swimming Committee from its inception in 1981 until 1987, including one year as the Division II Subcommittee Chair. He was appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Swimming Committee in 2013. Erickson also served as an assistant football coach at SDSU from 1976-1990, mentoring the Jackrabbits’ receivers. He later filled the role of intramural director for a number of years before focusing on coaching fulltime upon South Dakota State’s entry into Division I.

Student Coach Second Season

Erin Lionberger enters her first season as a graduate assistant and diving coach at South Dakota State. Lionberger arrived at SDSU after serving a year as head coach in the Adams 12 District in Thornton, Colorado. Prior to that, she spent three seasons at St. Vrain Valley School District in Longmont, Colorado, as assistant diving coach. In her four seasons in Colorado, Lionberger helped coach more than 20 state qualifiers and five current Division I divers. A former collegiate diver, Lionberger competed at Boise State for two seasons and finished 10th all-time in 1-meter diving and sixth in 3-meter diving. She also earned Academic All-Western Athletic Conference honors during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. • SEASON PREVIEWS • MEN’S PREVIEW

WOMEN’S PREVIEW

The South Dakota State University men’s swimming and diving team will rely on a mix of veteran leadership and talented newcomers in an attempt to maintain an upper-division finish within The Summit League during the 2015-16 season. Among the 14 lettermen returning to the squad, half were all-Summit League honorees a year ago. Leading the way is senior Ben Bolinske, who set schoool records in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle at last year’s championships, while finishing as league runner-up in the 50. Bolinske also has been a part of three school-record relays during his first three seasons with the Jackrabbits. Joining Bolinske in the senior class and on the list of returning allleague performers is South Africa native Garth Wadsworth. At the 2015 Summit League Championships, Wadsworth set a school record in the 100 butterfly and also swam on a pair of all-Summit relay teams. Junior Daniel Jacobson was the only other Jackrabbit to earn allleague honors for an individual performance as he placed third in the 50 freestyle. Jacobson also was a finalist in the 200 backstroke and swam on four different relays which placed in the top three at the league meet. The Jackrabbits are expected to be further strengthened in the backstroke events with the additions of freshmen Ben Johnson and Chase Petersen. Other returning all-Summit League performers from Jackrabbit relays include Matthew Carpenter, Geoffrey Longhurst, Tony Mikrut and Chris Rumrill. Carpenter is a versatile swimmer who has posted a top-10 mark on the Jackrabbit career charts in seven different events ranging from the backstroke to middle-distance freestyle to individual medley. Junior Chris Angerhofer will lead the Jackrabbits in the distance freestyle after setting school records in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 events last season. Angerhofer will be joined in the distance events by junior Weston Christensen and freshman Thomas Davey. Chris Rumrill, who was a member of a record-setting 400 freestyle relay last season, will be joined on the team by his younger brother, Wyatt, who is expected to lead the Jackrabbits in the breaststroke events. Another freshman, Pierce Oja, will give SDSU another option for the breaststroke and sprint freestyle events. Juniors Josh DeDina and Donovan Taylor return to pace SDSU in the individual medley events. SDSU also figures to be strong in the diving events, where junior Noah Batenhorst and sophomore Parker Brown return. That group is expected to receive a boost with the addition of freshman Joey Weber, who won a Nebraska high school state title.

The Jackrabbit women’s swimming and diving team returns all but three competitors from a season ago and will attempt to repeat much of the same success following a runner-up finish at last year’s Summit League Championships. The returning class of 23 letterwinners is headlined by school-record holders Alexandra Yaeger (200 butterfly) and Abby Zenner (50 freestyle). Yaeger also is the highest returning Summit League finisher following her runner-up performance in the 200 fly. Yaeger and Zenner were both finalists in the 100 butterfly at the league championships, while Zenner finished fifth in the 50 freestyle. Zenner will be joined in the sprint freestyle by junior McKenna Shallberg and newcomers Carolyn Kennedy and Gabby Langerud. Despite the loss of Summit League champion Emily Campbell (200 breaststroke), SDSU figures to be especially strong in the breaststroke and individual medley events. Both senior Kayce Smith and sophomore Kristin Erf rank in the Jackrabbit career top five in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, along with posting top-10 all-time marks in the 200 IM. Erf also was a member of the Jackrabbits’ all-Summit league 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays during her freshman season, along with senior Hadlie Overhue. A senior, Overhue competed primarily in the backstroke and sprint freestyle events last season, but is expected to perform mostly in the middle-distance freestyle events this season. Freshman Richelle Bruyckere will also be counted on for point-producing performances in the middle-distance freestyle and butterfly events. Besides Overhue, six other current Jackrabbits rank in the top-10 all-time in the backstroke events. Junior Sam Prasher and Elizabeth Buchholz, along with sophomore Cassie Hendricks all enter the season in the top 10 for both the 100- and 200-yard distances, while junior McKenna Shallberg (100) and sophomores Katya Vakshteyn (100) and Olivia Bartel (200) also have moved onto the list. Junior Julia Bodnaruk provides additional versatility in the Jackrabbit lineup as she will compete in the middle-distance freestyle and individual medleys. Diving also should be a strong suit for the Jackrabbits, who return all three divers from a season ago. Senior Olivia Olesiak ranks second on the Jackrabbit career performance list for both the 1- and 3-meter boards, while junior Alecia Winston and sophomore Emily Moore will look to crack the top-five this season.

BEN BOLINSKE was the top Jackrabbit individual finisher at the 2015 Summit League Championships, placing second in the 50 freestyle.

ABBY ZENNER set a Jackrabbit school record in the 50 freestyle at the 2015 Summit League Championships.

• ABOUT SDSU • South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. It has an enrollment of 12,589 students (fall 2015) from all 50 states and 70 countries who can choose from more than 175 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 13 Ph.D. and two professional programs. SDSU has grown from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement. The American Association of University Professors categorizes SDSU as a Category 1/doctoral-level institution. SDSU confers degrees through the following colleges: • Agriculture and Biological Sciences • Arts and Sciences • Education and Human Sciences • The Jerome J. College of Engineering • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School • University College • Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College.

THE COUGHLIN CAMPANILE is the most recognizable landmark on campus.

More than 2,000 people work at SDSU, making it the largest employer in Brookings. The South Dakota State University campus has seen numerous building projects the past 10 years. And it is not slowing. Projects recently completed include the Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building, the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and an updated Medary Commons, which was renamed the Enrollment Services Center. The new Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which will serve as the home of Jackrabbit football, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016. Other recent projects include: • The $48 million, 144,000-square-foot Avera Health and Science Center; • Daktronics Engineering Building, a 33,000square-foot expansion within the College of Engineering; • Jackrabbit Village, a complex of suite-style residence halls; and • Expansion of the Dairy-Microbiology building. Many facility projects and enhancements to academic programs were identified through the SDSU Foundation’s “It Starts With State” campaign, a comprehensive fund-raising inititative that raised more than $255 million over a fiveyear period from 2008-13. Also in the spring of 2013, South Dakota State University officials rolled out IMPACT 2018: A Strategic Vision for South Dakota State University. The five-year plan features four main goals: • Promote academic excellence through quality programs, engaged learners and an innovative teaching and learning environment; • Generate new knowledge, encourage innovations and promote artistic and creative works that contribute to the public good and result in social, cultural or economic development for South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world; • Extend the reach and depth of the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations, and • Secure human and fiscal resources to ensure high performance through enhanced financial, management and governance systems. South Dakota State University also is home to several facilities, including museums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage. The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including early Sioux Indian

THE UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION has undergone several expansion projects in recent years. tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, is a botanical garden operated and maintained by the SDSU Plant Science Department. The 50-year-old gardens were reamped in the summer of 2012 with the completion of the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitors Center, which hosts a variety of events. THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY South Dakota State University is located in Brookings, a growing community of about 22,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city in the state. Located 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. Brookings and the surrounding area feature tremendous recreational and cultural opportunities. The city features a vibrant downtown area with shopping and nightlife opportunities, maintains an extensive park and recreational trail system that includes the recently completed Dakota Nature Park, is served by two 18-hole golf courses, and is a gateway to first-class fishing and hunting areas. The community also is home to several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
