HOW TO RELIEVE MENSTRUAL CRUMPS

As women, we all know it, dread it, and are sometimes even thankful that we get it — I'm talking about our

monthly period. We all know the constant throbbing and cramping pains that come with it. According to the Mayo Clinic, your uterus contracts to help expel its lining during your period. Hormone-like substances, called prostaglandins, which are involved in pain and

inflammation, trigger the uterine muscle contractions. Higher levels of prostaglandins are therefore associated with more severe menstrual cramps. For some women, their cramps might even interfere with their work, school, and daily

activities. About three out of four women experience menstrual pains, and every one out of 10 women experiences severe cramps.

Menstrual cramps can be a real pain for any woman. Here are six ways to help ease your belly pains right at home. Exercise This might sound a little crazy and you might be thinking to yourself, I can

barely move, let alone exercise. However, brisk walking, or any type of physical activity, can help to ease your belly pain. When you're doing any type of aerobic exercise, your body is pumping more blood; this helps to release endorphins to

To help you get through the monthly visit, here are some home remedies that ease menstrual cramps.

counteract the prostaglandins and reduce your cramps. Exercising three to four times a week is good for the overall health of your body, but it is especially important if you're prone to painful menstrual cramps. Apply heat Heat helps to relax the contracting muscles in your uterus, which is the cause for your pain. There are many over-the-counter heating patches and pads, such as ThermaCare, Bengay, or electric, reusable ones. Or, even taking a regular plastic bottle with hot water and applying it to your abdomen is an alternative when you don't have access to a heating pad. Drink chamomile tea A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Chemistry found that there might be pain-relieving properties in this fragrant tea. "This is one of a growing

number of studies that provide evidence that commonly used natural products really do contain chemicals that may be of medicinal value," said Elaine Holmes, Ph.D., a chemist with the Imperial College of London. The research found that when 14 participants were given urine samples, their urinary levels had a significant increase in hippurate, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. Antiinflammatory drugs help to decrease the prostaglandin production, thus relieving menstrual cramps. Make sure you're getting enough vitamin D Prevention is always better than the cure, which is why making sure your body has enough vitamin D is important in preventing menstrual cramps. A study found that high doses of vitamin D3 led to a significant decrease in menstrual cramps. As

reported by Health.com, "40 Italian women were split into two groups: one receiving a single oral dose of 300,000 IUs of vitamin D3 and the other getting a placebo five days before the expected start of their menstrual periods." Their pain scored dropped by 41 percent, while those in the placebo group saw no change in their pain scale. Have an orgasm Yes, that's right — orgasms help to relieve all kinds of pain, including menstrual cramps. Before an orgasm, the uterus is more relaxed, and at the moment of climax, blood flow increases, helping to relieve the cramps. Orgams relieve the pain through the release of endorphins, which help you to feel instantly better. They also help to relax your whole body and induce sleep so you won't feel any cramping at all. 6. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine, which involves sticking the skin with small needles to stimulate the body at certain points. Researchers from the Oriental Hospital at Kyung Hee University Medical Center in South Korea found that acupuncture might have positive effects on menstrual cramps. The study was based on 10 trials with 944 participants. "There was an improvement in pain relief from acupressure compared with a placebo control," according to the study. Improve Your Diet to Alleviate Period Cramps Reducing fat and increasing vegetables in your diet may help ease monthly cramps. "A low-fat diet actually decreases overall levels of inflammation in the body,"

says Aldo Palmieri MD, an ob/gyn at UCLA Health and professor of ob/gyn at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine in Los Angeles. A low-fat, vegetarian diet not only helps your health generally, says Dr. Palmieri, but it can have an indirect yet noticeable effect on menstrual cramps, too. Trying to achieve a healthier diet? To start, swap out less healthy fats like the saturated fats found in animal products, and choose healthier ones like unsaturated fats found in olive oil, suggests the American Heart Association (AHA). And if you’re having dairy, pick low-fat or fat-free products. Overall, try to get 25 to 35 percent of your total daily calories from healthier fats found in fish, nuts, and

vegetable oils, the AHA suggests. A balanced plate is essential; examples can be found at the healthy eating plate site from Harvard. Pop a Safe Painkiller Not everyone wants to turn to medicine to soothe period cramps, but moderate use of a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication (NSAID), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can help, Palmieri says. Menstrual cramps occur due to local release of substances called prostaglandins, he explains, and NSAIDs lower prostaglandin production and decrease overall inflammation and pain. Check first with your doctor to be sure NSAIDs are a good choice for you, especially if you have a history of bleeding or kidney issues.

And read the label for dosing instructions to be sure you don't accidentally take too many. Turn to Tea to Calm Menstrual Cramps Certain teas may help relieve menstrual cramps, says Sonya Angelone, RDN in the San Francisco Bay Area. Research on herbal teas for menstrual pain relief is scarce, say experts, but teas have been used traditionally and can help. Because some of the herbs may act as estrogens, ask your doctor first before using one, especially if you have a history of a hormone-related cancer or take blood-thinning drugs. Fish oil, vitamin B1, or a combo of both can

significantly lessen period cramp pain. One example of an herbal tea that people use for menstrual discomfort is cramp bark, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Boil 2 teaspoons of the bark in a cup of water, simmer for about 15 minutes, and drink it three times a day. Just clear this remedy with your doctor first, especially if you're on diuretics for blood pressure or on lithium. Tea with peppermint oil may also help, Angelone says. She advises her patients with cramps to start sipping the tea that gives them relief a week or so before they expect their period. Ask your doctor if that might work for you. Try Fish Oil and Vitamin B1

Another natural route to period cramp relief is taking fish oil supplements, vitamin B1, or both, according to research published in September 2014 in theGlobal Journal of Health Science. Scientists assigned 240 teens with menstrual cramps and other pain to take B1 and fish oil, B1 alone, fish oil alone, or a placebo. The teens took 100 milligrams (mg) per day of B1 and 500 mg daily of fish oil supplements. When the teens reported their pain, those taking either the fish oil, B1, or both had significantly less pain than the placebo group. The pain also didn't last as long if they took fish oil or B1. Needle Away Period Cramps Acupuncture can help relieve cramps, says Jeannie Bianchi,

a licensed acupuncturist in San Francisco. "We're relaxing the nervous system," she says, which causes more robust blood flow to the internal organs. The acupuncture is thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect. In a January 2011 Cochrane review, experts looked at six studies that studied the effects of acupuncture on period cramps. They compared acupuncture with no treatment or conventional treatment (such as antiinflammatory drugs) on 673 women. And in another four studies, they compared the effects of acupuncture versus no treatment or conventional treatment in 271 women. Overall, they found that both acupuncture and acupressure could reduce pain, but

concluded that more evaluation was needed to be sure. Massage With Essential Oils for Pain Relief Using certain aromatic essential oils and massage can also relieve menstrual cramp pain, according to a study published in May 2012 in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research. Investigators assigned 48 women with menstrual cramps and other symptoms to massage either essential oils or a synthetic fragrance on their lower abdomen. The women used a mixture of diluted essential oils from the end of one period to the beginning of the next. Lavender, clary sage, and marjoram were used in a 2-11 ratio, and the essential oils were diluted to a 3 percent

concentration overall in an unscented cream (a solution created, for example, by adding 3 milliliters (ml) of essential oils to 97 ml of an unscented cream). Women in both groups reported less pain, but the essential oils group did better. Based on the women's reports, researchers found that the duration of pain was reduced from 2.4 to 1.8 days after self-massaging with essential oils. Curl Up With a Heating Pad to Ease Period Cramps "[Using] a heating pad has been studied, and it seems to work," says Palmieri. In fact, one small study published in 2001 in Evidence-Based Nursing found that topically applied heat was just as effective as ibuprofen for period cramps. Examples of

over-the-counter medicines containing ibuprofen include Advil and Motrin. The researchers assigned 84 women who had cramps to one of four groups. One used a combination of a heated patch and ibuprofen (200 mg every 6 hours). A second group used an unheated (placebo) patch and ibuprofen. A third group used a heated patch and a placebo pill. A fourth group, the control, was given an unheated patch and a placebo pill. Over the two study days, the women using heat plus ibuprofen, heat alone, and ibuprofen alone reported greater pain relief than those on the placebo. Women using heat with ibuprofen did not report differences in pain relief compared to those

using ibuprofen alone. But with heat, they experienced faster improvement in pain relief: about 90 minutes after starting, compared to nearly three hours for those taking medicine alone. More women who used both heat and ibuprofen reported complete pain relief compared to those in the control group, the researchers found. A review of studies published in March 2014 in the Journal of Physiotherapy found that heat reduced women’s period pain significantly. Boost Endorphins Your Way In addition to their painrelieving effect, endorphins can also boost your mood. Having an orgasm releases endorphins, Palmieri says. Working out does as well. Perhaps the last thing

you want to even think about while in the midst of cramps is exercise, but that can boost endorphins and help chase away pain. A report published in March 2015 in the Journal of Family Reproductive Health indicates that both aerobic exercise and stretching helped soothe period cramps for 105 students in the study. Up the Magnesium in Your Diet Getting more dietary magnesium seems to help ease the pain of cramps, says DeJarra Sims, ND, assistant professor of naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University’s California campus in San Diego and author of Your Healthiest Life Now. Indeed a Cochrane review of dietary and other remedies published in 2001

concluded that getting enough magnesium can help relieve pain. Magnesium is found in many foods and as a supplement if you can’t get what you need from your diet. Magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle functioning, among other vital tasks; researchers who evaluated the evidence on magnesium call it a promising treatment for menstrual cramps. But they cannot recommend a specific dose, because researchers have studied various doses. The recommended dietary allowance of magnesium for women of childbearing age is about 320 mg daily. An ounce of dry almonds or one half cup of boiled spinach each has about 80 mg.

Dr. Sims says the dose you may need depends on the severity of your cramps and other factors. Ask your doctor about the best magnesium intake for you. Lean on Your Contraceptive The odds are that your birth control pills may help relieve painful cramps, as reported in a Cochrane review of 10 studies that was published in October 2009. Experts didn’t find any difference between

low- or medium-dose estrogen contraceptives in producing pain relief for period cramps. But oral contraceptives come with side effects for some, which may include spotting, breast tenderness, nausea, and low sex drive — in addition to a higher risk of blood clots.

So, You're Thinking about Getting Your Cartilage Pierced? As with any body modification procedure, there is a lot of thought that needs to go into your decision. Will it hurt? How long will it take to heal? Where do I get it done? These are just a few of the many questions you might have. In the following paragraphs I will answer some of these most frequently asked questions, go over the pros and cons, and offer some

helpful hints on caring for cartilage piercings. What Is a Cartilage Piercing? The cartilage (which is harder than flesh but softer than bone) in your ears or nose can be pierced. Each spot has its own name. Ear Piercings There's a lot of cartilage in the ear. The soft fleshy lobes at the lowest part of your ear are pretty much the only parts of the ear that don't have it. It isn't uncommon to see

someone with many piercings in the same ear. The helix is located on the outer rim of your ear. The helix extends from just over the lobe and curves up and around to meet the temple. You can get a piercing high or low on your ear's helix, depending on your personal preference, and you can get as many piercings as you like. This is the most popular spot for this kind of piercing—so much so that some people use the term "cartilage piercing" to refer to a helix piercing. The daith or forward helix is where the helix ends, closest to the ear canal. An industrial piercing is two helix piercings connected with hardware (usually a bar). The anti-helix is the curve of raised cartilage just inside the helix. The top part, where the anti-helix curves under the helix, is called the rook.

Halfway down the anti-helix, usually where the helix and anti-helix are closest together, is called the snug. The conch (or conque) is the inner part of the outer ear, used for capturing sound, a cupped part where a finger fits nicely (without blocking the ear canal). The tragus is the little raised flap of cartilage separating the ear canal from the side of the face. It is often quite thick. The anti-tragus is the raised bit opposite the tragus (if you pinch the tragus and anti-tragus together, a bowl is formed under the ear canal).

Various types of ear cartilage piercings. People have been piercing their ears since before recorded history, and the oldest mummified human ever discovered was wearing earrings.

sometimes known as a rhino piercing.

Nose Cartilage Piercings There's a lot of cartilage in your nose, too. If you examine your own nose and feel which parts are flexible, then imagine a skeleton's nose and how the nose bone stops quite high up the ridge, you realize how much of your nose is made of the stuff. The septum is the flap of skin-covered flesh and cartilage that separates the nostrils. Some septum piercings pierce through the cartilage, but some don't. Nose tip piercings pierce the bottom of the septum between the nostrils and go up through the tip up to the top of the nose. This is

Why Get a Cartilage Piercing? These piercings can be lovely and interesting. Some are quite dainty and some can be extreme. I suppose it depends on and reflects the life you choose for yourself. Since the 1990s, piercings have been a part of the mainstream. Some people pierce just because they like how it looks, while others pierce for poetic or spiritual reasons. Some pierce to mark or remember an important event in their life. For some, piercings represent psychic

wounds and for some, healing. Piercings can be used for self-expression, to conform to culture, or to rebel against it. Some report that piercings give them sexual pleasure. I chose the helix for my piercing because this area is easily hidden by hair or hats. You have the freedom to choose when you want to

flaunt your piercing and when you prefer to keep it a secret. When I decide I want to show it off, I simply tie my hair up or tuck it behind my ear. If you want a cool piercing, but want to be able to control when you want to show it off, then the helix piercing is the perfect choice.

Ear piercing kit Why Not Get a Cartilage Piercing? What are the cons? The location of a piercing can have drawbacks. First off, if not careful, the jewelry can

get snagged on things such as hair, clothing, brushes, combs, or glasses. This isn't always extremely painful, but it can leave your piercing a little sore and red for the rest of the day and can delay healing. My helix piercing

gets snagged and bumped every now and then, but it's never anything too bad. I just wash it with some antibacterial soap or ear care solution to prevent infection. As long as you are mindful when you are doing anything that might snag and catch on your jewelry, you should be okay. Secondly, these kinds of piercings have very long healing periods because this tissue heals itself from the outside in, meaning the outer layers might appear healed but the inner layers might still be raw and sore. Because the piercing looks fine, many people assume after a few weeks that the piercing is fully healed, but it isn't. This can lead to difficulties healing and even infections. Other things to consider are infections, which are rarely serious, but the Mayo Clinic estimates that 30% of piercings result in a treatable

bacterial infection. Because cartilage doesn't have its own blood supply, it is more prone to infection than other kinds of piercings, and antibiotics won't help you because there's no blood to transport the medication. In addition, some people experience allergic reactions to the metal in jewelry. Although the jewelry can eventually be removed, a piercing may leave a hole or scar that never heals completely. You may even experience excess scar tissue.

How to Care for a Piercing Don't touch! As with all piercings, cartilage piercings should be touched as little as possible since your hands carry bacteria and may cause infection. Contact with any substances (body fluids, moisture, makeup, body sprays, etc.) should be avoided. Don't twist the jewelry either, since it can tear the fistula (the healing skin) and cause scarring, make it harder to heal, and sometimes even cause a rejection of the piercing. Keep it clean, but don't pick! You'll just get bacteria into the wound. The crust that forms is a normal part of the healing process. To clean: When you're in the shower, let the warm water wash over the piercing. You can also douse the area with a sterile saline solution (the same stuff you use to clean

contacts: You can make your own saline by adding 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt to a cup of warm water). If your piercing is painful or irritated, you might soak it in the saline as well. Only use an antibacterial soap if you worry that your piercing has come into contact with something dirty. How Long Does It Take to Heal? Give your new piecing 3-6 months of healing time. Some people may need 6-12 months for their cartilage to fully recover. During this period, clean your piercing twice daily with warm water or a saline solution. They said my helix piercing would probably take 6 to 8 months to heal, 12 months maximum, but that I could change the jewelry after three months if it was healing well. I integrated my cleaning time with my usual morning and evening rituals: I cleaned it in

the morning after I showered and brushed my teeth and then again in the evening when I got ready for bed. Doing it this way helped make cleaning my piercing seem like a simple addition to my daily routine, and also helped me remember to do it.

Will There Be Pain? A lot of people have asked if getting a cartilage piercing is painful. Although everyone's pain tolerance is different, for the most part it isn't anything too painful. Yes, there is some level of discomfort.

Getting a foreign object inserted into your ear isn't going to feel pleasant, but it won't be anything unbearable (or at least it shouldn't!). Does the piercing procedure hurt? The initial sensation feels like a small, dull pinch; maybe a five or six on the pain scale. A great way to simulate the feeling is to quickly pinch the area you would like pierced. It won't be an exact replica of the feeling you'll experience, but it will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. How long does the pain last? It is normal for your ear to hurt immediately after getting a cartilage piercing, pain that commonly lasts for two weeks to a month. Be careful to not sleep on the side that was pierced: Doing so will cause healing complications and unnecessary discomfort. What can I do for the pain? Fortunately, there are a

few simple things that can reduce the pain. 

First, everyday painkillers such as Tylenol or aspirin can temporarily relieve the tenderness. I recommend taking two Tylenol every four hours for the first few days. Consult a healthcare professional before using these painkillers for longer than a week. Second, icing your piercing for the first few nights will help reduce swelling and soreness. An easy way to fit icing in is to do it when you have some down time. Ice it while reading, watching TV, or relaxing. I always ice my new piercings for the initial week or so, and it drastically reduces soreness and tenderness. Third is taking care. As mentioned previously, be very cautious with your new piercing. Be sure not

to fiddle with it, as you may inadvertently cause infection, and do your best to keep it protected from bumps and hits. Where Can I Get a Cartilage Piercing? Finding a place to get pierced has never been simpler! Most tattoo shops offer body piercings as well. Just inquire to verify if they will be able to do a piercing. Some retail shops such as Claire's— or others at your local mall— offer cartilage piercings. Of course, there are also parlors that perform only body piercings. When choosing a place, go with your gut instinct and your personal comfort zone, but also do your research. Instead of choosing the "coolest" or most convenient place, go wherever you feel you will get a safe, sterile, sanitary piercing. Make sure it is a clean shop with no red flags such as dirty equipment,

careless staff, and unhappy customers. Do your homework! Read the reviews online before you choose. If customers walked away with a bad experience, the odds are that you will, too. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions. Ask about their sterilization procedures and credentials. If they seem secretive or defensive, it is best to take your business elsewhere. Remember: This is your body! You want a skilled professional doing the piercing, not someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Rule of thumb: If you wouldn't eat a meal there, don't get pierced there.

Piercing Gun vs. Needle I want to address an ongoing question: The piercing gun vs. needle debate. For years it was thought that piercing guns promoted infection, shattered cartilage, and disfigured the ear. Some point to evidence to support the claim that piercing with a piercing gun can shatter the cartilage. However, recent medical studies have shown that piercing guns may not be as

terrible as once assumed. It is now becoming evident that any piercing, by needle or by gun, can have negative consequences if the piercer does not perform the procedure properly and does not use sanitary equipment. So the problem with guns may not be the guns themselves, but the experience and training of people who use them. Although some people swear by using special piercer's needles or a dermal punch and say that the guns they use at mall places are never properly cleaned, there is no solid evidence to support claims that piercings done by a piercing gun will result in infection (or another complication). But we do know that any piercing that isn't pierced with care and caution will be prone to complications. Every piercing that I have has been pierced by a professional

with a piercing gun, and they have all healed wonderfully and lasted many years. Closing Tips Here are some tips I have learned over the years for healing and maintaining a cartilage piercing: Tip #1: Clean, clean, clean! Twice a day! A piercing is essentially an open wound, so treat it as such! Wash your hands before you clean or touch your piercing. Don't let anyone else touch your piercing. It might seem silly to ask a friend or family member to wash their hands before checking out your new piercing but you need to take every precaution necessary in keeping yourself free of infection. Simple things like sanitizing after swimming or showering, washing pillow cases and sheets regularly, and keeping shampoos, hairsprays, and other harsh chemicals away from your

piercing should insure a healthy healing process. Tip #2: Don't rush the process! Your piercing will take 3-6 months to heal fully. Do not try to speed along the healing process. Relax and let your body work its magic. I urge you to not change the jewelry or stop cleaning until it is healed completely. Changing your jewelry before your piercing is healed can result in infection or rejection. Allow your piercing to recover properly so you can enjoy it for years to come! Tip #3: Listen to your body! You know your body better than anyone else, and if something just doesn't seem right to you, there might be a problem. If you follow the sanitary guidelines mentioned in this article, you shouldn't have any issues. Things like mild discomfort and redness

can just be a sign that your body is trying to recover from the trauma of being pierced, but sometimes problems can still arise. Keep an eye out for persistent pain, redness, swelling, or a greenish, milky discharge secreting from the piercing, as these can be your body's way of saying there is something wrong. If these warning signs do present themselves, or you have any concerns, visit your doctor. Usually an infection can be easily treated, but serious issues like tissue damage or disfigurement of the cartilage do occur. To ensure these things don't happen to you, keep following the rules and paying attention.

12 PRETTY MAKEUP LOOKS TO TRY IN 2016 PUT DOWN THE CONTOURING POWDER. STEP AWAY FROM THE FAKE EYELASHES. WE'VE GOT 17 NEW MAKEUP IDEAS TO FRESHEN UP YOUR LOOK IN 2016. Clumpy Lashes and Faux Freckles There was a '70s revival on the spring runways. At Francesco Scognamiglio (say that name ten times fast—or at all), makeup artist

Georgina Graham channeled "a teenage Shelley Duvall" with clumpy lashes and faux freckles. Using Lord & Berry Back in Black High Definition Mascara, Graham held the wand parallel to the lashes, brushing it back and forth in a windshield-wiper motion to get them extra clumpy. As for the freckles, she used three differentcolored pencils and pressed the blunt tips into the skin to create dots, scattering them over the nose and cheeks and putting them in random places for "a more realistic

effect." Keep the foundation light and the lips toned down,

and there's nothing retro about this flirty look.

Chestnut-Colored Lipstick Lighter than brown but darker than tan, this chestnut shade is cool in a vintage suede skirt kind of way. And

because it's such a unique hue, all you need is a bit of concealer and mascara and you're good to go. At Kenzo(shown here),

makeup artist Lynsey Alexander created the tawny shade by lining lips with M.A.C. Lip Pencil in Cork, then layering a custom blend of yellow, brown, orange, and red pigments on

top. To try it at home without playing mixologist, we suggest Smash box Be Legendary Lipstick in Chaior Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick in Chocolatte.

Red Lips—and Nothing Else "Classic red is back in a big way, but it looks much cooler against bare skin," said makeup artist Pat McGrath, who painted the models' lips a fiery orange-red at Victoria Beckham, using only concealer on their skin. At

Jason Wu (shown), makeup artist Yadim applied two coats of crimson liquid lipstick—no foundation, no mascara—then sent the models on their way. To get the look, try Maybelline New York ColorBlur by Lip Studio in Cherry Cherry Bang Bang.

Cobalt Liner Out of the million different ways makeup artists applied blue this season, our favorite version was the major liner look at Jonathan Saunders.Using M.A.C. Chromographic Pencil in Marine Ultra, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni lined the inner rims of the eyes. But she

didn't stop there: She traced the top and bottom lash lines and added extra oomph by smooshing a bit of cobalt cream shadow into the roots of the lashes. By having the vivid blue shade both along the waterline and the lash line, the models' eyes looked much brighter and more defined.

White Wings There's nothing edgy aboutwhite eye shadow— until you start smudging and streaking it across your eyes, Jackson Pollock style. At Zero + Maria Cornejo,

makeup artist Dick Page used a medium-sized shadow brush to paint on slashes of matte white pigment on the outer corners of the eyes. (For a similar superpigmented effect, try a

cream like Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in Snow orSephora Colorful Shadow + Liner in White. Curl your lashes and skip mascara—

glamorous, dark lashes will look too dark and glamorous for such a simple, abstract look.

Sunset Shadow The blazing pinks, reds, and oranges of a sunset look just as beautiful on the eyes as

they do on Instagram. Case in point: the shadow at Altuzarra's spring 2016 show. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux

whipped up the warm hue by mixing red and orange lipstick and spreading the custom blend over the lids and creases with his fingers. We know what you're thinking—"Orange shadow, me?" Just keep reading. "I

find orange very flattering on the eyes," says Pecheux. "It's complimentary whether your eyes are blue, green, or brown. And when it comes to skin tone, the darker your skin, the stronger you can go with your orange shade."

Brilliant Gold Shadow Makeup artist Pat McGrath shook up the beauty world

when she launched her firstever eponymous product— Gold 001—on Instagram with an impromptu makeup

session in the Tuileries Garden in Paris. She also got everyone obsessing over gold. If you weren't one of the lucky few to nab the limited-edition pigment, it doesn't mean you can't jump on the trend. Grab the

shiniest, shimmer-packed gold shadow or liner you can find (we suggest Cover Girl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Gold) and dress up your eyes as subtly or as outrageously as you like.

Smudgy Silver Shadow Our obsession with all things metallic includes silver— especially when it's all livedin and smudgy, like ZoÍ Kravitz's shadow. Line the inner rims of your eyes with a black liner (likeUrban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Perversion) to help define the shape of the eyes. Then define the creases of your eyes with a matte nude shadow that's a shade darker than your natural skin tone. Now you're ready to go in with the silver. For this look,

you want a powder shadow with a ton of sparkles (like the silver shade in Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Color in Black Oyster) that you will blend all over your lids, around the inner corners, and all along the lower lashes (dampen your brush for an extra sparkly effect). To ensure this look stays more sex kitten than space-age, go back with your black pencil and line the outer half of your top and bottom lashes.

Flirty Lashes and Lips For those of us who live in leather jackets and motorcycle boots, here's a feminine look that still lands on the cooler side of the makeup spectrum. Taking a bit of inspiration from the '60s, makeup artist James

Boehmer paired "chunky Twiggy lashes" with "dusty mauve lips," a color he achieved with Nars Velvet Lip Liner in El Agua topped with Nars Audacious Lipstick in Dominique. To keep it from going too dollylooking, follow Boehmer's

lead and groom brows, keep skin as fresh as possible, and use the softest shade of pink

blush you can find so you get definition but not an overt flush.

Sparkly Wings To wear this look IRL without looking insane, you need to anchor the glitter with black liner. Trace a thick line along your top lashes and a thin one along the bottom, and add

mascara top and bottom. Pick a loose glitter in a color of your choice (Make Up For Ever and Ben Nye glitters both come in a variety of pretty shades), and make sure to have a waterproofing gel (like M.A.C. Mixing Medium Eyeliner). Dip your

brush in the gel, then in the loose glitter, and begin tapping it onto the outer corners of the eyes, gradually bringing it out to the temples. You may need to repeat that

step a second time to get the amount of glitter you want, but once that's done, take whatever's left on your brush and apply it along the top and bottom lash lines.

Allover Caramel We're obsessed with Zendaya's sexy, glow-y take on monochromatic makeup. But before you say there's no

way you could pull this off at home, we'll let you in on a little secret: The singer did this herself. "Zendaya does her makeup quite often if I'm not available or when she's in

the mood," says makeup artist Allan AvendaĂąo. "She has a keen sense of how to apply it, and that really shows with this look that she created using a caramel shade of bronzer. The color brings out the golden tones in her skin and gives her a beautiful, sun-kissed complexion." Line your eyes with dark brown pencil, and choose a mediumtoned bronzer with a hint of gold shimmer (likeNars

Bronzing Powder in Casino). Dust the powder all over your lids and blend it up to the brow bones. Then apply it on both the apples of the cheeks and along the cheekbones as a contour. Finish with a matching creamy lipstick (Maybelline New York SuperStay 14HR Lipstick in Lasting Chestnut) and lots of black mascara.

Go for the Gold For those who don't have Zendaya's olive skin, try a similar effect with soft beigygold tones like we saw at Alberta Ferretti's spring show. To create a "dreamy,

ethereal effect," makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury dusted a pale matte bronzer on the cheeks and temples to warm up the skin. She brushed a shimmery pinkygold blush (M.A.C.

Mineralize Blush in Dainty) on the cheeks and dabbed a pearly-gold highlighter (M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Hush and Pearl mixed together) on the cheekbones, down the center of the nose, and on the center of the lips. On the eyes, Tilbury tapped a white-gold cream shadow on

the lids, then a golden-bronze shadow buffed into the creases of the eyes. For extra sparkle, she painted a soft beige-gold cream around the tear ducts and along the lower lash lines. Lots of black mascara finished the look and took the pretty factor to a whole other level.
