The Secret Ingredient:

G.R.A.C.E WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

T

oday, we still celebrate this holiday on the fourth Thursday in November and it remains a day to reflect on all that we are thankful for. Today, we still celebrate this holiday on the fourth Thursday in November and it remains a day to reflect on all that we are thankful for. Families all over gather around the dinner table for a marvelous feast! Multiple main courses, side dishes, desserts. There are endless buffets of delicious foods. But, the secret ingredient to give your family a real boost (not just a full belly!) is GRACE. Not just the Grace you say

8

kiddos | October • November 2016

around the table in prayer, not just the kind of grace that allows us to behave in a polite and pleasing manner. Yes, those are both important. But G.R.A.C.E. will fill your hearts and home for more than just the holiday season.

G: Gratitude True gratitude is an overall appreciation for what is (and isn’t). Studies show

that an “attitude of gratitude” goes a long way and those that are thankful are, overall, much happier and healthier. This holiday, teach your family how important it is to be grateful, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day of the year. Some ways to practice gratitude are to write “Thank You” notes, express thanks verbally to one another, begin a Gratitude Journal (write 3 things you’re grateful for everyday), pray or meditate

(this can include exercising or being out in nature for some quiet time). You may want to begin a new tradition or practice with your family. Perhaps you each give thanks to one another in the morning before the day begins, or at night before bed. You can write “Thank You” notes and put them in a Gratitude Jar, and pick some out to read each Friday after a busy week. Not only is this a great way to bond and spend time together, but the benefits to truly appreciating life and the people in it are vast.

R: Respect Respect one another for your similarities and your differences. In this way, respect nature and animals, as well. Life is a beautiful, magical thing. It’s a true blessing. When we appreciate one another for our strong qualities, and our quirks, it’s easier to show respect, love and care. It’s easier to feel happy, light and playful with one another. And kindness is good for both the giver and receiver! Like appreciation, practicing respect and kindness can make us happier and healthier! And some studies show it may even slow down aging! Some ways to practice kindness in your family are to smile at one another (smiling is a universal, contagious

language!) and the people we come across throughout our day, compliment one another and offer a thoughtful gesture like opening a door or pulling out a chair for someone. Say “please” and “thank you” and practice polite manners. Be gentle with one another and yourself.

A: Acceptance Eckhart Tolle said, “Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.” Teach your family the tremendous value of acceptance. When we accept ourselves, others and our life circumstances, we are at a major advantage. True freedom, happiness and empowerment is born from an acceptance to all that is (or isn’t). Handle challenges with grace, gratitude and respect or kindness. We cannot control external life or others, but we can most definitely handle how we respond to them all. Kicking and screaming will not benefit us, or anyone, and it will certainly not make an obstacle disappear. But quietly observing with a clear mind, and accepting what is for what it is, we are much more equipped to find solutions or peace amidst difficult times. Lead by example! Show your family that the

power of their mind is incredible, and by shifting their focus and perception, even a challenge can seem like a blessing and opportunity for growth and learning!

C: Communication There is nothing more valuable to interpersonal relationships of all kinds than clear communication. We each have a unique voice. We must use it! By practicing gratitude, respect and acceptance, we are able to speak our minds and hearts in a clear, concise and gentle way. A productive way! All of these skills piggyback one another and improve upon our overall health and happiness and wellbeing. They compliment each other and practice really does make it easier to move through life with peace and joy. Teach your children that instead of arguing or yelling at one another, they can instead tell each other in a respectful, kind way, what they are feeling in the moment. For example, “When you do this, it makes me feel this.” There is no blame in that, only an expression of Self. Not only will this improve your family dynamic, it will help your children to have successful relationships of all kinds throughout their lives and to be in touch with themselves.

Tips to Fill Your Day with Active Play WRITTEN BY: Dr. Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play initiative

A

s the busy school year progresses and the holidays approach, it can be challenging for families to find time to play and stay active together. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that kids participate in 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day, but unfortunately this isn’t always what they are getting. Play is an important part of a child’s physical, emotional and social development, yet many external factors can quickly become barriers to active play including busy schedules, technology and the costs of sports equipment. A survey conducted by Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play initiative, which is dedicated to getting kids and their families active, found that only 33 percent of children are participating in active play daily, down from 41 percent in 2015. Don’t let barriers get in the way of keeping kids active during the school year. Instead, turn those barriers to play into opportunities to get active with the following tips. Fill down time with play time: Children’s active play time is impacted by busy schedules – 64 percent of parents said busy schedules were a barrier to play this year, up from 56 percent in 2015. Active play doesn’t have to happen all at once; it can be spread out through the day so try fitting it in when you can, even if it’s in 10-minute increments. Waiting with your kids at a bus stop? Make it active by playing a game of Simon Says. Need 10 minutes to get ready to leave the

house? Send the kids outside to play before loading up the car. Make DIY toys: Sports equipment can be pricey to purchase and maintain. Instead of breaking the bank, try recycling objects around the house to make them into toys. You can make old socks into a hacky-sack game by filling them with beans or fill balloons with sand and create a fun game where you toss the balloons into buckets. Get wired for play: According to the survey, 78 percent of parents said their children spend more than 30 minutes on an average day watching television and 71 percent said their children spend that time on a computer, smartphone or other device. Instead of letting technology

get in the way, incorporate play into their time with technology. Have your child play an active video game that encourages players to move around their environment or try playing a game between TV commercials, such as tag or hide and seek. It can also help to set a limit for how long your child can use the computer or watch TV per day. Be your kid’s playmate: According to the survey, 53 percent of parents said having no playmates was a barrier to their child’s play. No one likes to play alone, so when siblings and friends aren’t available, join in on the fun and create games you and your child can play together. Whether it’s playing Marco Polo or throwing a baseball back and forth, you can find ways to spend quality time with your kids and have fun while doing it. k

5 Tips for Building a

Better Lunch Whether you’re packing lunch for the kids or looking for ways to boost the grownup lunches in your family, these ideas will help pull you out of your lunchtime rut. Customized carrier: Get a customized lunch box that will make you and your kids excited about lunch. Features like bento boxes and cooler compartments add a practical touch to the fun.

K

eeping lunch ideas inventive and exciting can become challenging over time. Lunchbox envy may start in grade school, but when you open yet another uninspired sack lunch, you may find yourself wishing you could trade with a friend or co-worker, if only for the change of pace.

Menu collaboration: Talk to your kids about what they want to eat and come up with menus together. Involving them in the process helps them feel empowered and may give you some ideas to liven up your own routine. Tasty treats: Kids and adults alike can appreciate new ways to enjoy their favorite flavors. For example, Dole Mixations are a one-of-a-kind fruit fusion that’s a simple and delicious

twist on two snack time favorites: applesauce cups and cups of fruit. Words of encouragement: Whether you’re packing a lunch for your little loves or your big one, include a note or message that’s sure to bring a smile at lunch. Pack a punch: Balance basics like sandwiches with fruit and crunchy veggies to ensure the meal has a healthy, fulfilling variety to keep energy up throughout the day. An option such as Dole Mixations is an enjoyable mix to brighten any meal. They contain non-GMO fruit, no high fructose corn syrup and no artificial flavors. Plus, they are naturally gluten free and rich in vitamin C. k

rick or Treat Safety Tips

• Plan a route. Before trick-ortreating talk with your children about where you are going and how many houses you plan to visit. Stick to well-lit houses in familiar neighborhoods only – preferably on streets with sidewalks.

Supervise your children. Go along with your trick-or-treaters but also allow children to safely explore their world and grow their independence skills. Allow younger children to take the lead by ringing the doorbell and saying “Trick or Treat!” For older children, you may want to wait on the sidewalk at each house.

Make your children visible. Go early and carry flashlights. Give your children glow necklaces to wear and put reflective tape on their costumes or clothing. You can buy reflective tape at most hardware stores.

12

Stay on the sidewalks. Remind your children to stay on the sidewalks and avoid crossing yards. Lawn ornaments, furniture, and other impediments present tripping and falling dangers. Avoid taking shortcuts across backyards or alleys. Cross at the corner. Stop at all street corners and stay together in a group before crossing. Cross streets at the corner, use crosswalks, and do not cross between parked cars. Remind your children over and over again to look left, right, and left again before crossing the street. Drive carefully. Drive slowly and follow traffic signals and the rules of the road. Exit driveways and alleyways carefully. Have children

kiddos | October • November 2016

get out of your car on the curb side, not on the traffic side. Watch for children in the street and on medians. Expect some children to dart out in front of you.

Halloween Candy Safety Tips Parents should take precautions about Halloween candy safety, but it’s also important to have a realistic sense of harm. It’s easy for the media to give us the sense that the world is a more menacing place than it really is. In the 1980’s, a myth spread about the serious risk of troubled people using poison and razor blades to tamper with Halloween candy. Almost all reports were discredited. But no amount of debunking can completely alleviate parent anxiety. After all, however rare, it could happen. Some Halloween candy safety precautions include:

For young children, remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys.

Instruct your children to show you all their candy before eating it so that you can carefully inspect it for tampering.

Tell your children not to accept or eat anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.

Throw out candy or treats that are homemade, unwrapped, or have torn wrapping.

Managing Your Child’s Candy Intake How can you manage the Halloween candy craze? First, to reduce trickor-treat munching, give your children a snack or light meal before you leave to go trick or treating. Decide ahead of time how many pieces of candy they can eat on Halloween night. Read our e-family archive article for additional tips on managing the Halloween candy craze including dental care tips for kids.

Halloween Costume Safety Tips

If possible, have your children wear clothing that is bright, reflective, and flame retardant.

If your child is carrying a prop, such as sword or pitchfork, make sure that the tips are smooth and flexible enough to not cause injury if your child falls on them.

Avoid long, baggy, or loose costumes to prevent tripping.

Insist that your children wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Mom’s high heels are better for costume parties, not trick-or-treating.

Securely fit hats and scarves to prevent them from slipping over your children’s eyes.

Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have your child wear a mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If you use a mask, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision. k

Make Time for Family Meals WRITTEN BY: Food Marketing Institute

J

uggling jobs, kids and the demands of a busy, modern life often come at the expense of family mealtime at home. Even though life never seems to slow down, now is the perfect time to renew your commitment to creating and serving meals at home that nourish your kids’ brains and help them flourish. Not only is time together around the table an opportunity to catch up and reconnect, numerous studies provide evidence of the positive, lifelong benefits of family meals. Regular family meals are linked to the kinds of outcomes that ensure a bright future for children: higher grades and self-esteem, healthier eating habits and less risky behaviors.

For example, according to research published in the “Journal of Pediatrics,” kids and teens who share meals with their families three or more times per week are significantly less likely to be overweight, more likely to eat healthy foods and less likely to have eating disorders. Other studies have shown that children who grow up sharing family meals are more likely to exhibit positive social behavior as adults, such as sharing, fairness and respect. On the other hand, research also suggests that aside from missing out on the benefits, families that share fewer meals together can also experience adverse effects when it

comes to certain risky behaviors. A study on the relationship between certain family characteristics and adolescent problem behaviors, published in the “Journal of Adolescent Health,” found that teens who have infrequent family dinners (fewer than three per week) are 3.5 times more likely to have abused prescription drugs or have used an illegal drug; 2.5 times more likely to have used tobacco and 1.5 times more likely to have used alcohol. Meal planning Planning for family meal time can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be. Promoting one more family meal each week is an educational program created by the Food Marketing Institute Foundation and the nation’s grocery stores. Take the stress out

Commit to having one additional meal with your family each week at home. It doesn’t matter whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. The benefits are the same. After a month, you may be surprised by how easily your new commitment has become a habit for the entire family.

Rely on the resources available at your local grocery store. Even when you don’t feel like cooking, there are countless meal-planning solutions such as pre-prepped fresh ingredients, delicious ready-made entrees and wholesome heat-and-eat dishes.

Make meal planning a family affair. List each family member’s favorite foods in each of the main food groups and see how many combinations you can create. Then ask your children to accompany you to the store to help select the ingredients (and use the trip for age-appropriate learning, such as comparing prices, reading labels, etc.).

Save time by engaging the whole family in meal preparation. Even the littlest hands can help with tasks like setting the table.

Set a regular meal time so you can plan other activities around it. Sit around the table, turn off the TV and put away phones and electronic devices. Keep the focus on each other. k

CONTINUATION FROM PAGE 9

“Staying in the present moment reduces stress, as we are not the past or the future.”

E: Experience Nothing can replace the benefit of personal experience. Encourage your children to experience life in all ways possible, through all of their senses. Mindfulness is a mental state where we focus on the present moment while acknowledging and accepting our feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. We are able to experience life much more fully, gracefully and joyfully. Staying in the present moment reduces stress, as we are not worried about the past or the future. To teach your children mindfulness, try exercises like touching different objects (plastic, fur, something hard, soft, etc.), listening to sounds like a bell or chimes or nature sounds (you can download an app for any of these), going for a walk and playing “I-Spy” (point out different objects in the environment) and paying attention to our breathing and heart beat. There are many different ways to get kids to slow down and pay attention so they can truly experience life, together and individually. Remember to keep activities simple and fun! By practicing G.R.A.C.E., you are setting your family up for a healthier, happier life. Your family dynamic will most likely shift into one of pure love and joy and play. Sure, there will always be challenges and upsets. But the percentage of time spent in discord will become lower and lower as everyone begins to experience life in a new way. G.R.A.C.E. is important to remember

and extend on Thanksgiving, but it’s even more beneficial to practice every day throughout the year. Not only will you enjoy watching everyone getting along better, you will start to feel better, too (and look better, because we look how we feel inside!). So go on, give G.R.A.C.E. and enjoy a heaping feast of love and joy and abundance today…and throughout the year. k Camille Lucy is a Certified Holistic Health Coach, Certified Reiki Practitioner, graphic and web designer, business consultant, and Vice President of a local non-profit that “rehabilitates people through animals.” She is also a writer, a Mother of 3 girls, an artist, a Life-and-Love Junkie, a Self Expression and Development advocate, and - well, you get the point. The Benefits of Yoga for Kids! SOURCE: Just OM Yoga Studio

We live in a constant rush, and our children are faced with non-stop lessons, competitive sports, school pressures, video games, and social media every day. Help your children to reconnect with their innate JOY, while developing mindfulness, compassion, patience, respect and kindness towards others.

Y

oga, and Much More!

We often categorize Yoga as an exercise, and that is not completely wrong (because it can be), but it is so much more. Yoga is both movement and non-movement; it is about fast and slow, about we and me. It is in essence a set of skills that allow each of us to learn to manage our energy and internal self-talk, to develop self-governance, and to move towards a centered, calm, cooperative and focused state. Yoga is for everybody and all ages. Yoga teachers are taught to meet the student at their stage, to engage and encourage

positive self-talk, and to guide the students so they understand their needs and energetic levels.

• Awareness of the breath. • FUN! The Benefits of Yoga:

Kids & Yoga! Here are some of the many benefits of teaching yoga to kids. What to Expect in a Kids Yoga Class: • Singing songs with big expressive movements. • Storytelling / acting out animal names of yoga poses. • Playing games to develop cooperative and non-dominant social engagement.

• Focus and Concentration - which helps with scholastic skills.

• Enhances flexibility, strength, and coordination - which brings about a positive attitude towards one’s health and self esteem. • Stress management - breathing exercises slow down the heart rate and relaxation techniques keep the mind and body calm. • Positive self-expression - which encourages creativity. • Kind social interactions by working together in an accepting safe environment.

Miss Peregrines’s Home for Peculiar Children (YA) By Ransom Riggs The first book in the series introduces readers to a mysterious island, a strange orphanage, and a collection of creepy photographs. Jack and his friends fight to fend off the zombie onslaught, but now the zombies seem to be disappearing, with no explanation as to why. Jack isn’t convinced this is good news

Soccer for Peace Foundation Empowering and Supporting Colombian Youth A Miami-based non-profit dedicated to generating awareness of and supporting projects in Colombia that use soccer as a vehicle for social change. The movement has been a mayor success since its launch in 2008.

W

HAT WE DO

Soccer for Peace focuses on initiatives in Colombia that directly impact over 4,000 children, including boys, girls and youth ages 5-16. As such, SFP provides grants, staff training, curriculum development and gear, as well as ongoing consultation. SFP conducts field visits of the projects it supports on a quarterly basis. We are also the liaison for American and other volunteers who wish to intern at one of our programs in Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

WHY WE DO IT Colombia is one of the most “unequal” countries on the planet—where the gap between rich and poor is among the widest in the world. All sectors of Colombian society must work to ameliorate the issues that result from this gap. Specifically, Soccer For Peace initiatives target vulnerable neighborhoods and communities that often share these characteristics:

• • • • • • •

Fragile or no civic institutions Extreme poverty and isolation Lack of public services High level of unemployment Presence of displaced populations from civil conflict Domestic violence and sexual abuse Gang warfare and drug trade As a result, children and youth are at a high risk of falling prey to the inherent risks present in vulnerable communities.

Characteristics of high-risk environments for children include: • Lack of mentors • Excessive free time • Exposure to domestic violence • Absence of structured out of school activities • Exposure to risky behavior • Drugs

34

kiddos | October • November 2016

• Alcohol • Premature sexual activity • Crime, gangs, prostitution

HOW CHANGE HAPPENS The Main philosophy is to use soccer to teach values and lifelong skills • Core values: Respect, Honesty, Tolerance and Solidarity • Applying Values in real life: life skills training • Promoting gender equality and empower girls • Providing Nutritional support • Emphasizing the dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution • Promoting school enrollment • Linking children’s program with families

score is established. The advisor facilitates the fair play agreements during the first period and the self-evaluation in the third period. The advisor also mediates potential conflicts, and takes notes on the game. The winning team accumulates the most number of credits, which are then converted into points for the tournament’s scoreboard.

If at the end of the tournament there is a draw, the team with the most points, as a result of values applied during the game, will be declared the winner. k

OUR METHOD Soccer Our children learn the fundamentals of soccer technique, strategy, and play. In addition, they are trained in the “soccer for peace” methodology, where the following rules apply: • A minimum of two girls and two boys per team.

Each boy and girl plays the same amount of time during the game.

There are no referees. In their place are advisors, who act as facilitators.

The players themselves must solve conflicts that arise during the game. A girl must score the first goal of each team.

• •

Children are encouraged to follow core values. They receive points for doing so.

The game consists of three periods. During the first period, all players agree to follow fair play accords. During the second period, the game is played. During the third period, players evaluate themselves, as well as their opponents, and the final
