livesmalltownmag.ca For the most part, I amstrapped to my desk, while our team is out discovering all the hidden and not so hidden treasures our small-town communities boast. Normally I am discovering everyone via our social media channels. Snooping at family pictures of local artists and business owners and getting to know them one happy or sad moment at a time (sounds sort of creepy). All that said, please feel free to reach out via social media. Some of my favourite articles were written about folks who just simply said, “Hi”, followed by me snooping and falling in love with their dog pics. Truly.

A born nurturer, I love to help make anything grow and am happiest when I am investing in the growth of my child, garden, students or community. I am a teacher, beekeeper, writer, activist, and general nuisance. After traveling all over the world, I have found my home in Paris, where I live with a kind professor, a wild child and a sweet dog.

Spicy Jan

tastyroadtrips.com Growing up in Toronto the youngest of four, we were expected to sit at the table and finish up our plate. We ate what we were given or at least we were creative about how to navigate a clean plate. Food wasn’t an element of community in my younger years. In my 20’s, through falling in love, I experienced the European culture in a delicious new way which would become my new norm. Chirozo, garlic, onion, sardines, basement bbq’s, pimento sauce, pork, bacalhau; I experienced food first hand through family, celebrations and cooking at home. This was the beginning of my 30-year journey of exploring cooking, food, business, travel and community. As owner operator of Tasty Road Trips Food Tours, I bring the food and beverage tour experience to small towns with big tastes.

NANCY HOWDEN-COWELL

I live in a beautiful small village on the shores of Lake Erie and am surrounded by family, friends, art, local beauty, goodness and of course my sweet dog Mia. I will explore all the hidden gems that our lovely wee towns offer and share those experiences with you on social media and in the pages of Live Small Town Magazine.

NANCY DOMSIC KINGS

olliandella.com I was born with a wild imagination. My mother was naturally creative, so I grew up painting, planting, sewing, baking and creating. The second I picked up my first camera I became obsessed with capturing the small wonders around me. To date, my permanent creative status allows me to be an art director by trade, photographer by fate and remain imaginative by nature. I spend most days in the middle of a creative mess or treading lightly while adventuring with my husband, two funny kids and our little Westie pup at our side. Sarah Gurney

I’m an excursionist! Since I was young, I loved to explore all of the areas around me. My husband Jim and I go for “Drive Abouts.” That means jumping in the car, set to wander aimlessly. We find some of the most interesting places when we don’t know our destination, sometimes getting lost. Small towns, big towns, country lanes, and everything in between is where we wander. It’s fun finding new and interesting places to share with you. At home on the shore of Lake Erie, I love spending time with my husband, my armload of kids, grandchildren, my cat Murri, and my BFFs.

Ricky, Business Administration student

I moved from Burlington to small-town life several years ago. It was a bit of an adjustment and when I say small town, I actually mean rural Hagersville. My closest neighbours are cows and buffalo. No longer could I pop out my front door and find all of the latest conveniences at my finger tips. But, you know what!? I love it now. There are so many wonderful businesses out here offering everything I could want. I’m a cook by trade and I love to write too, and out here where the buffalo do in fact roam, I have inspiration galore! From rolling farm landscapes, to Lake Erie, the Grand River, and hiking trails. The fresh produce, cheese, honey, grass fed and organic meats. Not to mention the locally produced wine, beer, and cider. Everything within minutes of my home. I am in heaven. As one of the newest sales gals to join the Live Small Town Magazine crew, I look forward to meeting you! The summers spent on my grandparents’ farm taught me about the importance of maintaining rural economies and supporting local farmers, businesses, and creators. Now as a university student living in a city, I still am connected to these values through my art, scholarship, veganism, and environmentalism. I know that as I grow, I should always remember where I was planted. Nicole VanQuaethem

In my free time, when not in the kitchen testing recipes, I love getting outside, and cuddling and exploring with my little dog Chloe. Emmalee Nother

Stillwaters Run Deep

Over looking the Grand River in Paris, local businessman, Matt Cummings, shares his secrets and gratitudes for his community-centred success. BY kerstein mallon

For most of us “Living the Dream” has become a familiar catch phrase. Everybody dreams it. But what is it like to actually do it? How driven do you need to be? How strong is your ambition and can you find the strength to risk it all? Well, thirty-seven-year-old, local restaurant owner and entrepreneur Matt Cummings exemplifies how to make your dreams a reality. In 2008, Matt found himself at a crossroads, with only $20 in his wallet and an idea. He made a choice. “That moment, I decided to be self-employed. I knew I would never again work for someone. I would do whatever it took to be successful”. That decision would change his life forever. Matt became the new co-owner of the Cobblestone Pub in Paris. He attributes much of his success to local business owner Bill Kennedy, who has mentored him since the beginning. Bill introduced Matt to Michelin-trained Chef Will Thompson, of Caledonia, and with a hand shake and a common goal to “make Paris better”, this indelible duo of dining began a lasting partnership that aimed respect to the neighborhood’s community and modernize its tastes and aspirations. Together, the pair opened three restaurants, Stillwaters, The Midtown Café

and Italian-inspired experience, Trattoria at Midtown. Matt says they work harmoniously. Will’s food speaks for itself; he knows what people want. For Matt “Business starts at home.” And at the end of each day, he heads home to his wife Karly, a Paris native, and their two children. Karly is Matt’s inspiration to do more, to be better. “She has supported me and always gives me the courage to take risks.” Matt understands how fortunate he is. With over 100 employees during peak season, he values everyone’s contribution. “Our staff is excellent; they are the best in the industry”. Together with his wife and his management teams, they strive for excellence. “Most people live their life looking forward to retirement; every move I make is for the sole purpose of making sure I don’t retire. I look forward to Monday morning.” This successful dreamer is willing to roll up his sleeves and solve any problem head-on. “I don’t believe you can make everyone happy, but I know you can at least try.” He likens his strategies for success to sport. “Sports and business are very alike. If you’re not at the top of your game, the competition will win.” And so far it has made sense, as his four prosperous endeavours continue to thrive. Nestled among the long line of great places to visit on the high street in Paris, the Midtown Cafe makes you feel like you’ve found somewhere special. The inside is rustic and colourful, it’s easy to feel like you’re in the perfect place and the vibe is contagious. The aroma of fresh coffee and the din of merriment that echoes about the place is welcoming. The food is defined by its fresh, never frozen ingredients - a distinction familiar to each location. Behind the café is Trattoria, with its picturesque dining room overlooking the Grand River. It’s a perfect location to enjoy a quiet authentic Italian meal. The Cobbblestone Pub is a community favourite too. Kelly Miller, the manager, has been dedicated to her role for over 10 years. The dishes are made fresh-to-order and the atmosphere is calm and casual. The weekly specials, such as Wing Night on Wednesdays or Kids Eat Free on Tuesdays, help maintain the neighborly comradery. Matt speaks fondly of the Paris community. “They wrap their arms around local businesses and do their best to support each other. The people of Brant County are loyal.” he says. And Stillwaters, sublimely picturesque, is The place to be, especially during the summer months, drawing crowds from miles around. Although for locals, the Tuesday special: All You Can Eat Mussels, from November through April, is a VIP attraction. Sunday Brunches are decadent and Date Night offers an incomparable, select menu for two. The managers Michael Spencer and Kim DeBoer have been an integral part of this location’s overwhelming success. “I wouldn’t have been able to do Stillwaters without them.” Matt says. Where Matt Cummings is concerned, the unquestionable combination of moxie and modesty are a guaranteed recipe for success. Next time you’re in Paris, why not stop by and see what happiness tastes like? Live it for a day. Live it for a lifetime. SPRING 2019 23

Trattoria at Midtown Paris trattoriaparis.com Open the doors of this old school authentic Italian restaurant, resting perfectly atop The Grand River in Paris and feel the comfort of settling in for a food experience that memories are made of. I suggest the Trattoria Ravioli with Kale & Chicken in a light cream garlic sauce, as the flavour profile is outstanding. On first bite, get ready to raise your hand and say, Viva Italia!

Hometown Brew Co. Can sketch by Eric Pond Designs

Hometown Brewing is poised to begin their next chapter at Eco-Adventures BY Tim Zwart There truly is no place like home. Something about the warmth of a familiar space, the memories of yesteryear and the familiarity of family and friends leaves an indelible mark on one’s very being. It is the place we feel most comfortable, where we lay our heads, where we dream, love, share and grow. And when you haven’t been back in some time, there is no better feeling than coming home.

Dusty Zamecnik and the team at Hometown Brewing understand all these things all too well, which is why they’re thrilled to be coming back to their Norfolk County roots and opening their first brick-andmortar brewery in Fall 2019. “From day one our goal has been to open a brewery in our hometown of Norfolk County. But we didn’t want to open it just anywhere; we’ve been looking

for the perfect spot for almost two years. And we finally found it!,” says Hometown. That spot, as it turns out, is located on the grounds of local favorite Eco-Adventures, and will be Ground Zero for Hometown’s latest brewing chapter. Phase one? A craft style bier market on the shores of Eco’s lake in May with eco-friendly options to decrease their environmental footprint and emphasize zero-waste. But that’s not all! The team also plans to open a more retail-forward location as well, aiming for a November debut in the Delhi area. Continue the journey home while making Hometown a part of yours.

Abe Erb Brewing Company Ayr abeerb.com A Canadian staple with American roots, the team at Abe Erb loves celebrating Kitchener-Waterloo’s rich local heritage, while toasting to its beer-filled future. All beers are brewed in-house with core brands available year-round + rotating seasonal and small batch. Something for every taste.

The Cider Keg Vittoria ciderkeg.com If sweet and smooth is your game, then the Cider Keg is the name for you. This family run farm, with 100’s of acres of orchard, farm land, and cider mill, offer fresh and sparkling local apple cider, and a one-stop shop for everything apple inspired and infused. They even have “pie in a jar”!

What the Health? Although Getting Diagnosed with cancer shook my world, everyday, I face life’s challenges Head on, with Confidence.

Photography by Danielle Berkel of papersuitcasephotography.com

BY Nicole VanQuaethem Many readers may know me as the nutritionist who loves a good locally inspired recipe but what many people don’t know about me is that two years ago, at the age of 25, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Now, you may be wondering why I am sharing this but it is my hope that at least one

person benefits from this and finds the motivation to reach out to a friend, focus on their wellness, and know they are not alone. Although I was extremely grateful to be diagnosed with a slow growing cancer and avoid radiation and chemo, my body was taking a serious hit. Stress, plus side effects

from going on and off certain medications made it hard for me to feel like myself. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was finishing nutrition schooling and starting my nutrition practice. I instantly felt embarrassed, annoyed and ashamed. I thought to myself, “After eating well and getting my health on track, how is it that I got diagnosed with cancer? Will anyone take me seriously as a nutritionist who has cancer?” Right away I did everything I could to support my body. After my tumours began to shrink, I was more lenient with my diet. Knowing as much as I do about the impacts of food on our bodies, I would then feel immensely guilty about eating certain things and

therefore cause myself more stress. I was having issues with creating balance, which is something I teach in my nutrition practice regularly. This brings me to today. I may still over think, eat things I shouldn’t in moderation, and get stressed about it, but I eat well, exercise, and surround myself with only the best people. I decided to change the ideals around what it means to be a young female, or any person for that matter, with cancer and created my own definition of wellness. It’s important to note that this isn’t just about me. I want to emphasize that there isn’t one definition of wellness and its something you need to define for yourself. Achieve it however you want and take ownership of that.

Nicole VanQuaethem is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Culinary Nutrition Expert and owner of Simply Nic Nutrition, where she focuses on educating and empowering people to make healthy choices for themselves. She also has her Masters of Science in Rural Planning and Development where she focused most of her research on local food systems, agri-tourism, culinary tourism and food access. Nicole grew up on a farm, which inspired her studies and work in rural development in southern Ontario. Combining her passion for nutrition and local food, she teaches people to eat within the seasons and to become connected to the food they eat. In her free time, she likes to spend time in the kitchen testing recipes, getting outside, and cuddling with her little dog Chloe. simplynicnutrition.com Live it for a day. Live it for a lifetime. On the Map

Breaking Eggs Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, be sure to indulge your taste buds by exploring new eateries.

The Beach House Port Dover It is a given that if you want to enjoy a spectacular view while dining on a delicious meal, the place you need to be is The Beach House in Port Dover on the north shore of Lake Erie. Although you might not associate this as a breakfast place, on Sundays only, you can enjoy one of the best Eggs Benedict I have ever tasted. Let this chef surprise you with his new weekly creation!

Sunflower Cafe Selkirk In most small towns, there’s that one diner where the locals frequent. So it is a real bonus when the food is good and the staff is friendly. This 100 year+ corner store turned cafe - is just that place for Selkirk. The town folk and Lake Erie summer cottagers keep returning for the hearty, home-style cooking and baked goods that melt in their mouths. My omelet was the best I had eaten in years!

The Olde Bakery Cafe Ingersoll theoldebakerycafe.com In the small town of Ingersoll (if you are lucky) you will come across one of their most treasured spots: The Old Bakery Cafe. Display coolers are filled to the brim with an array of baked jewels that taste like they came straight out of your grandmother’s kitchen. Is it any wonder that this is such a well loved destination for the locals to congregate for a mouth-watering meal?

2 Rivers Paris With a great view of where the Nith River joins the Grand River, this cozy little bistro style cafe in Paris has an ambiance that enhances their many menu options. Dine Al fresco in the warmer seasons, while enjoying one of their scrumptious breakfasts. It certainly will be a tough decision, but I guarantee that whatever you choose, it will tantalize your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Skyway Cafe and Catering Brantford & Tillsonburg skywaycafe.ca Are you looking for a place to take the kids for breakfast but from past experience, you know they are going to get bored before you get to enjoy your meal? You need to check out the Skyway Cafe in Brantford and Tillsonburg. Keep them entertained and occupied watching the small planes come and go, as you enjoy your own yummy breakfast. Maybe you will even get time to have that second cup of coffee.

Burger Barn Historic Site Ohsweken burgerbarn.ca If you are heading to the Burger Barn, on 4th Line in Ohsweken, to sample their all-day menu, come hungry and make sure you have a lot of time to make up your mind from their huge menu. On their all-day breakfast, they offer everything from quesadillas to breakfast poutine and their staff always make you feel welcome while you enjoy their wholesome fare. Rural Roooots!

Rural recreation is the cure-all you’re craving and roots are so cool and underground, they’re like the most indie thing in the planet. Put those two things together and you’ve got (yell it!) Rural Rooooots: Your indispensable, unconventional guide to bucolic wonder and countryside cravings. BY J.C. Villamere

1. I need an all-pork sausage! And make it devoid of fillers and artificial preservatives. Make it from a revered, historic family recipe or don’t make it at all. Also, I do NOT want it to travel. I need that sausage produced on a local level. 2. Gimme non-GMO grains! And serve nothing less than that to those pigs and chickens grazing at Perry’s Corners. Don’t make me bellow it again. And keep the lamb there GMO-free, too. 3. Puppy pics: I need ‘em. Also: llama portraits, horse photos and depictions of happy cows. I put these intentions out into the universe and it always provides. Here are all the details on how to reap the requests on my cranky spring wish-list:

Perry’s Corners Farm

Bright perryscornersfarm.ca Megan Thomas had a vast quest for gaining knowledge. She first earned a history degree, then a grad degree in library science. Then she settled on the site of an old school and focused on a topic that affects us all. “As a student, the things most important to me were research and access to information,” Thomas explains on the Perry’s Corners Farm website. “When I applied that passion to figuring out what to eat, I learned the key role a farmer plays and discovered gardening and raising livestock could be more than just a hobby.” Thomas started on a four-acre farm and added another 58 acres in 2014. Now, Perry’s Corners Farm raises heritage breeds of cows and pigs, plus grass-fed lamb, pastured chickens, and free-range eggs. Fresh vegetables are available at the farm store through the growing season. Visit perryscornersfarm.ca to sign up for the newsletter (seriously, get on this, lamb is already sold out for 2019) and to behold their online ordering system for custom butchered meat (because some are on a quest for knowledge and some are on a quest for sausage).

Perry’s Corners Farm Photo by Ron Kleinsasser

Please feel free to reach out and let us know about other farming folks, within the community who are doing it different!

I didn’t get away all winter and it was a long one, with more ice than a location of this latitude has any business attracting. The whole dull expanse of it has left me cranky. And you know me when I’m cranky: I become almost wilfully difficult to please. Feet are stomped. At times, I shake my small fists and bellow like a lady Bernie Sanders. And famously, I concoct increasingly specific, often food-related demands that I then release out into the universe. Demands like these:

Teal’s MEATS

Waterford tealsmeats.com If you’re a long-time local, you need no introduction to Teal’s Meats. Folks from the Norfolk area have enjoyed this delicacy for, like, ever (correction: since 1915). If you’re new in town, do yourself a favour and introduce yourself to their pure pork, farmers-style sausage. It’s been handmade using Teal family recipes for over a hundred years. If you haven’t checked in with this family farm in what seems like a hundred years, then here’s an update: Over the past few years, Teal’s has added a full line of high-quality, fresh meats. Some of their most popular offerings include thick-cut pork chops, beautifully smoked side bacon, and pork roasts custom cut and tied. They source beef and pork from Ontario farms and dry age all beef for at least 14 days before it is expertly cut. Teal’s also offers goat meat from the family’s own herd. Teal’s has a reputation for high quality, flavourful meats and sausage, but we bet it won’t be long before they’re even more well-known for their goat meat, which is becoming an increasingly popular choice for health and environmental reasons. Never had it? Don’t wait to develop a new taste for old-fashioned quality. ColourFast Farm

Caledonia pyreneanmastiff.ca “Quality and happiness can be found here!” proclaims the ColourFast Farm website, which is true because their site is festooned with photos of adorable (adorable!) mastiff pups who help protect the farm’s livestock. And what a stock of livestock it is! There’s a flock of sheep, rare breed cattle, horses, llamas, pigs, pastured chickens, ducks, and guinea fowl. It’s a full-blown Old MacDonald’s situation, so much so that in addition to the mastiffs there’s also a collie and shepherd on hand. And those llamas? They’re guard llamas. (I wish that was a hilarious joke that I made up but it’s true.) Brant County’s ColourFast Farm is located on 60 acres where hay is grown and animals graze. “We raise our animals in a healthy, happy, natural environment, on pasture in the spring, summer, and fall. Our animals are raised without the use of chemicals, vaccinations, drugs, and antibiotics,” according to the farm’s website. “We strive to provide the highest quality meat possible.” Order your grass-fed and pastured lamb, chicken, beef, and pork before you forget, and then you can go back to clicking through all those puppy pics. Live it for a day. Live it for a lifetime. SPRING 2019 31

HealING MATTERS

Those who go above and beyond to help their fellow folks in any way they can through simple and sweet conversations, community gatherings and taking care of those who need a little more TLC, no matter how big or small. These are our healers, the ones who share their many gifts to help others who may benefit from the blessings they were given.

mall villages and towns have always held tales of those who could heal, the ones given talents to help others feel better. They healed through words, through nature, through medicine, and through the power of bringing people together. Today, we give these healers titles like minister, doctor, pharmacist, therapist, and continue to celebrate how they help our communities be bright, beautiful places filled with vitality, health and happiness. In gratitude and celebration of these great gifts, we are pleased to celebrate some of our local healers.

To awaken your soul and feel empowered to overcome anything is a truly remarkable feeling. Now imagine a healer who can teach you to do just that. Meet Helena Cataford, a beautiful soul who enables people to tap into their own energies and change their conscious and subconscious mind to allow the purest form of healing. Helena and her wonderful husband Tony own the Willow-Glen Clinic located in their lovely waterfront home in picturesque Caledonia. Needing a change of pace, they made the move from Oakville in 2006. Since then they have fallen in love with how small-town living has welcomed them with open arms and how the community continues to offer gratitude to them everyday. Embracing the gift of healing, Helena is a trained reiki master and certified hypnotherapist who embodies positivity, love and light. It’s hard not to be completely enamoured by her and her spirit. She empowers you to heal yourself. She knows that each one of us has the unique gift of using the powerful energy that we are born with to heal ourselves. Understanding that the mind is directly connected to the body, she teaches you how to harness your energy, how to speak to your conscious and subconscious mind to help you live a life free of stress, anxiety, addictive behaviours and trauma. She teaches the beauty of self love, of pure love and the positive energies you have within. You just have to tap into them and Helena has the patience and the kindness to help you do just that. The beauty of what Helena does is felt within deep within your body as she guides you though hypnosis and takes you on a healing journey. She speaks with comforting and caring words; her touch and her amazing ability to connect with you are so remarkably divine that it calms you to your core and fills 40 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

your heart with a feeling of all-encompassing joy. We live in a world where stress runs rampant, but when Helena welcomes you into her special room where she interacts with all of her clients, you already feel the hustle and bustle of the day start to melt away. The room is an extension of Helena herself. The calming, and oh-so-comfy nook acts like a warm hug when you enter and instantly your troubles fade. Offering both in-house and phone sessions, Helena has made herself accessible to all. She wants to help everyone, of all ages, understand the power and healing energy they have within themselves. She has helped children, emergency workers, cancer patients and anyone who requires assistance in their lives. From surgery, anxiety, or bullying, Helena uses her talents to help you find yours and heal you from within. She helps you learn that we are the most powerful hypnotists in the world, in our own right. She explains how we go in and out of hypnosis every day, naturally. That moment you zoned out while reading a book? A moment of self hypnosis. Our brains are incredible vessels of knowledge and we only use a small fraction of it. Helena helps you tap into more of your mind, allowing deeper type of healing. She teaches you how your subconscious mind stores unwanted habits and irritants that can cause unwanted behaviours. She then empowers you to change that. We all have the ability to heal ourselves; Helena just allows you comprehend it. Greeting everyone who comes in the door is Tony, the voice of the clinic. Kind, warm, and welcoming...it’s so clear why these two kindred souls found each other. In addition to Willow Glen, Helena and Tony are also creators of a natural flower essences named “The Eliminators”. Helena carefully crafts and channels her powerful healing energy into each bottle to help others live a happy more enjoyable life. Targeting three separate health issues - hot flashes, weight gain and stress, each Eliminator tincture harnesses the power of nature to elevate the healing process. Those going through menopause, chemotherapy, emotional weight loss issues or just struggling to manage the stress and anxiety of everyday life have benefited from these heavenly essences. As a healer, Helena wants everyone to take time for self care and self love, for everyone to make caring and healing a part of their daily rituals. The gift of healing is in everyone; it just takes a very special person, like Helena to guide them.

The beautiful lakeside town of Port Dover in Norfolk County is known for its bikers and its sandy beach. It’s a place where you can’t help but feel a fair bit of whimsy and wonder in the air as you take in your surroundings. No wonder it managed to bring together two of the most compassionate, caring and loving humans with the gift of healing. Meet Mike Marini and his wife Sheena. Not long after you meet them you feel something special. They warm your heart; they speak to your soul. Their zest for life and humankind is infectious. Mike is the pharmacist and co-owner of the Dover Apothecary. Now a household name for many in the area, he moved here in 1986 as a temporary replacement for a pharmacist that was on maternity leave. He quickly fell in love with the local community and soon he also fell in love with his wife, Sheena. These two lovebirds are natural born healers, but their energies are only amplified by having each other. When Sheena met Mike she was battling cancer. She had moved back with her family to seek treatment and heal. Mike just so happened to be her pharmacist, and well, the rest is history. Never in her wildest dreams did she think there would be a love connection there. After all, she had no hair and thought her days could possibly be numbered. All Mike saw was a beautiful, fullspirited woman whom he wanted to know all about. Fast forward to 1989, Mike and Sheena were blissfully married. She still very much bald from chemotherapy and Mike, completely enamoured by her - they truly were the village love story. Deciding to make the Port Dover area their permanent home, Mike, with the help of Sheena’s creative mind, officially opened up the Dover Apothecary. With a traditional, smalltown feel and honouring traditional small-town values, Mike has been serving the community ever since. He takes great joy in seeing his customers grow, from the small children coming in with their parents many years ago to those children becoming parents of their own little ones. Being rural means trust, loyalty but most of all, treating everyone like they are family. Mike was honoured by the community when he was named Citizen of the Year in 2016. As humble as he is, he actually didn’t think he deserved the honour. But ask anyone in the surrounding communities if

they know Mike, and they will tell you how he has touched their lives and the lives of their families. His generous and thoughtful nature has given him a status in the community for being a person they can all count on. He wakes up at all hours of the night if the phone rings, knowing that answering could mean all the difference for the person on the other end. If he knows a customer needs a prescription but is unable to pick it up or is in need of a meal, he will find someone to deliver it. On numerous occasions, patients have called him from the hospital, not knowing who else to call, because they can count on Mike’s unfaltering care and compassion. His soul is pure and his heart is full to anyone who needs it. The essence of healing is weaved within every fibre of his being. He is a husband, a dad, a self-proclaimed sub par hockey player but most of all, he is a true healer. His wife Sheena has also been blessed with the gift of having a beautiful soul that she opens wide to the community as a minister. She’s a woman who moves you with her words and makes you smile with her insatiable humour. After everything she has been through in life, she is filled with a love that she shares with no limits to whoever may need it. Currently with the United Church of Canada, her ministry days began on the Reserve in Haldimand and Brant Counties where she devoted her time to those of the First Nations. Taking in their culture, how they incorporate nature and community into their practice, she flourished and found her true calling. She fell into the world of ministry not by choice, but it found her. Putting her faith into the universe as it was, she realized she had been given a gift, one that people naturally flocked to it filled Sheena’s heart with pure joy. She continues to find more ways to help others through the ministry, reiki healing and shamanic practice. Through adversity, she shows a face of resilience and finds ease in the ability to help and heal others through her positivity. Sheena and Mike have an unbelievable love for each other that flows out of them both as they speak about one another. The couple has shared their love with not only their community but also through seventeen foster children, with whom they still keep in touch; a small colony of large dogs of the Great Dane and St. Bernard variety and have the most extraordinary love for their son, Riley. Their love for small-town living allowed them to become the transformational healers they are.

“Being a part of a small community brings so much joy to both Mike and me. Being able to genuinely help people anywhere from the grocery store, to school, to church that’s what makes a community become family.” Sheena Marini 42 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

Dr Tyler Fletcher, Cobblestone Medicine and Rehab Centre, Paris ON 44 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

Located in Paris, a beautiful village located on the shores of the Grand River, Dr. Fletcher is a healer who embraces the importance of community. With a keen compassion to help people when they needed it most, he knows that going the extra mile is something that should always be practiced. Starting his healthcare journey in St.Thomas, he soon found himself establishing his own locally owned practice in a more rural community (Paris, Ontario) where he uses his specialized knowledge, patience and kindness to help those who require help in many facets of their lives. In 2013, Dr Fletcher opened Cobblestone Medicine and Rehab Centre in Paris Ontario where he is married with three beautiful boys! Dr Fletcher not only works full time as a Sports Chiropractor specializing in Concussion Management and Sports injury but also runs the very busy multidisciplinary clinic. For Dr. Fletcher, practising in a small town has its special perks. It allows him to have more time with each patient, to assess their needs more deeply. He fosters relationships with his patients and forms a bond that enables him to treat his patients as a whole. The patients he sees vary from children to the elderly and he and his team of medical professionals treat everyone with the same mindful amount of care, compassion and time. He listens to all of their symptoms and offers a full spectrum of attention, treating the entire problem. He is able to take this high measure of care with his patients because of the privilege of being a doctor in a small town. For him, it means he gets to connect on a different level. It enables him to use his talents in health and healing to treat his patients with more care than he would have been able to elsewhere. He sees the importance of building relationships with his patients and within the community and firmly believes that giving back both through his talents and through his practice helps bring the community together creating a beautiful synergy. As a sports chiropractor who specializes in Advanced Concussion Management, he understands that time is often of the essence when dealing with injuries, especially in

children. As a young dad himself, he has a gift when it comes to treating many of the young athletes that come to him with concussion symptoms. Many sports teams and school boards in the community trust Dr. Fletcher and his elite team of over 20 different therapists and medical professionals because they take special care and get to the root of the issue, while giving a full spectrum of care all within the same building. Something incredibly helpful to most small, rural communities that otherwise would have to travel far into a city to receive treatment. His commitment to what he does often shows when he works outside of normal clinic hours to treat a patient who needs it most. It comes naturally to him. Being a doctor is about changing lives and making lives better for his community and if a child needs treatment after hours, he has opened his home on occasion to make sure they are okay and offer them the care they need - a clear example of how dedicated Dr. Fletcher is as a healer. Practicing in a small town has given Dr. Fletcher a sense of belonging and he couldn’t imagine not being where he is, with his family and his business. The community has made it the success that it has become and he takes great pride in the outstanding patient-driven service he and his team offer anyone that comes through the clinic’s doors. Being able to offer primary health care providers to help others on every step of their healing journey is not only important but essential for Dr. Fletcher. His talent and his gracious nature make him an easy doctor to talk to, to relate to and to trust. His inspiration comes from those he works with, those he helps and those he loves - his family. In order to provide for his family, he provides for his community. He continues to grow his practice, welcoming in many members of the community that need his specialized knowledge or the attention of his team. He takes pride in building relationships with other local health professionals who share his enthusiasm and expertise in the field of healthcare. It’s a community supporting a community, something unique to small towns. and what makes Dr. Fletcher and the Cobblestone Medicine and Rehab Clinic a cornerstone in healing a community.

“Practicing in a small town allows you to bond and build trust with your patients that you can’t do anywhere else. It elevates the level of how you can help them and gives you a stronger relationship with them and their families.”Dr. Tyler Fletcher 45 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

Our totally insider, Town-by-town, hidden-gem-by-hidden-gem, guide to what’s new, hot, and legendary in BRANT County. (and a wee bit of Brantford) All the stuff you absolutely must eat, do, buy and indulge in to make the most of your time off the sofa and loving our county! Written & Photographed by Jay Perry

I am still not 100% sure, but ‘m told that, Brantford is not part of the Brant County! I mean, it has the “Brant” part in its name. Well, whether it is included or not, I decided to include two stops in Brantford as part of my Brant County road trip! Surprised? I certainly was too. In early March, I headed to Paris ON, to stay the night at the Arlington Hotel and although I have visited Paris many times, spending the night was going to allow me an entirely new perspective and experience. As I headed toward my destination, I spotted a farm on the Brant County/ Brantford border. I had read about it in Live Small Town magazine, and decided to stop in. Brantwood Farms is a one-stop shop for fresh 46 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

produce, delicious pies, sweets, and spreads. (Their Reece’s Pieces fudge is divine) Their website actually says, “From rhubarb to strawberries, apples, sweet corn and pumpkins we grow a variety of fruits and vegetables on our home farm. What we do not grow ourselves we source from local growers and producers in the area.” Pretty impressive! What I did not know, was that their family had been farming in the Brant County area since 1891. Next stop, lunch at The Cedar House - Grill & Martini Bar in Pariss! Upon entering, I was greeted by their friendly waiter Mark and brought to my seat. After my first glance at the menu, I knew I would order the Vodka Battered Fish and Chips. It was served with coleslaw and martini tartar sauce but the next item that really caught my attention was their Lobster Corn Dogs, served

with avocado cream and chipotle aioli! I can not even say that I was really hungry and I had no idea what they were but the name and description on the menu had me sold. The fish and chips were outstanding and the tartar sauce was something I had never tasted before. It had an extra kick to it that made everything uniquely perfect. I ordered the The Lobster Dogs, only planning to try one. I knew I couldn’t possibly eat all three and even though they were delicious, I had trouble finishing one, as it was that filling! I still don’t know what chipotle aioli is (nor do I need to) but I do know that I would drive to Paris just for those Lobster Corn Dogs alone! If you go to Paris and do not stop into the The Cedar House to try them, you are seriously missing out. I love how close everything is in Paris. I could have (should have)

walked to my hotel from the restaurant but instead decided to make the 45-second drive. When booking my stay at the Arlington Hotel, all I really knew was that it was located in a very old building and run by the same company that owns my favorite taco joint in Hamilton, The Mule. But as I approached, I could tell that my accommodations for the night, were full of their own unique character. The Manager of Happiness, Alexa Dunham (that is what her email signature says) welcomed me and took me on a personal tour to show me the four vacant rooms that I could

choose from. Each room has been decorated differently, named after literary artists and designed based on that individual, their movies, books, or work. The rooms were inspired by people like Stanley Kubrick, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, and Lewis Carroll. All the rooms were uniquely incredible and made me feel very inspired. After a bit of consideration, I went with room 403, the Oscar Wilde Suite. It felt as if I was in one of his plays. I was blown away by how perfect the design was and how it impacted my experience. I applaud the room’s dec-

orator as the attention to detail was insane. In my opinion, they should be renting out the rooms to movie production companies. Besides being a beautiful hotel, the Arlington boasts award-winning cuisine, rental space for private parties, weddings, and an underground basement bar that is available to rent for special occasions. The feel of the place transports you back in time to a place where people may have partied during Canada’s prohibition days. You really need to see it to understand! restaurant, offering a creative and tasty looking, blackboard-based menu. The dishes they offer apparently change regularly, based on the season, so that they can serve the freshest flavours available locally. I picked a great night to stay there because it was also acoustic night, where diners get to enjoy their meals while listening to the tunes of performer Ken Crawford. For dinner, I decided to order the shrimp tacos. They were covered in watermelon salsa and sweet chilly aioli with a side of onion rings. I perfectly paired them with a pint of Muskoka Detour and in literally a blink of an eye, my waitress Emma (who had the most infectious smile) brought my food to me. On the record, the Arlington tacos easily rival those at

The Mule in Hamilton. They were some of the best tacos I had ever had. Great food, great beer, great music and a room inspired by Oscar Wilde. I know I say it every issue of the mag but I could write an entire article on the Arlington Hotel (Kate won’t let me). You must experience this place. To see more photos of their different rooms, please check out their website arlingtonhotel.ca The next day, I packed up and made my way to St. George to visit Brantview Apples & Cider. The orchard has been in production for almost 200 years, harvesting the land and supplying quality apples, cider and baked goods. I never realized how much there was to know about the business of growing apples and that there are The Cedar House Grill & Martini Bar

actually many experimental apples being grown that remain unnamed. It blew me away. It was also inspiring to learn about the love that goes into growing and providing their apples to the community. A few years ago, the family embarked on a new venture and decided to enter the world of cider making. Located on Howell Road in St. George, the cider is aptly named Howell Rd Cider Co. I mean, if you have all those apples, why not party with them too! I had recognized the name from The Bine Tour, that my friends and I went on a few issues back, but I never had the chance to try it. Even though I am not much of a cider drinker, I was quite impressed by their flagship beverage. It was really quite refreshing and went down easy. As I was snooping around and sampling, I came upon their Apple Butter Barbecue Sauce. It was delicious too. If you love apples and want the best tasting apple products you’ve ever had, go here. Hands down! But remember to pick up some cider donuts because they are ridiculously good. While I was in St. George, I decided to venture downtown and see what treasures I could find and I stumbled upon The Classic Vault Emporium. From the outside it looked like an antique shop, so I went in to check it out. It was actually a shop that

featured multi-vendor gift and collectibles, new, vintage, handcrafted and artisan wares. I started chatting with the gal behind the front counter, Tracey Khan, to try and get some more information about the store. Tracey owns Not Too Shabby and is a vendor in the store. She informed me that each of the vendors rotate on a 10-day working schedule. Meaning that they each take their turn running the store. This way, 100% of the sale goes to the vendors. I thought it was an amazing idea. Be sure to pop in and check it out because they are always updating their inventory. I made a left when leaving the shop and headed down the street. In the distance, I spotted a question mark sign attached to a building. My curiosity heightened and I strolled over to investigate. It ended up being the South Dumfries Historical Society and St George Museum so I popped in to see what it was all about. I chatted with Cliff who gave me a 50 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

bit of the background on the museum. They offer a public place for folks to research the history of the area as well as a tourist information stop. It was also filled with antiques from the town along with a massive old map on the wall. I really had a great time digging around and learning about the history of the area. The day had been a full one but there was still time for one more stop. I didn’t want to do it alone so I popped back on the highway to pick up a travel buddy, the prettiest little sidekick ever: my niece Lauren. In quick order we were heading to Gametime Eatery & Entertainment in Brantford. (yes, I know, not Brant

County... but still BRANTford) Food and video games: my favourite things ever! We started in the gaming room and Lauren racked up the tickets, kicking my butt until I too hit a 800 ticket jackpot. This smiling girl continued to show me up as she moved from game to game winning. It truly is an unreal place to bring kids. Afterwards we were shown to our restaurant booth by the nicest dude, Kris. I was also surprised at how big this place was and as much as I was loving spending time with my niece, I kept thinking of how much fun I could have on a Friday night with friends. Lauren ordered the kids pizza and fries and I decided to get crazy and

order the Trophy Caesar. A Montreal steak spice rimmed, 32oz beer glass of Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Clamato mixed, with a splash of dill pickle juice, Worcestershire and Suicide Sauce. It was garnished with a boneless chicken wing, a deep-fried pickle, a pepperette, a spicy bean, a cucumber and lemon. It was basically a meal on it’s own! Think you can finish it? You up for the challenge? It really was not easy even though it was pretty amazing. With my drink, I ordered the GT Signature Burger. Angus beef topped with peameal and Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar and mozza-

rella cheese, ranch dressing and their GT burger sauce. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: Wow! Yes, you are correct. It was that good! I wish this place was located in my town. It is a sports bar, an arcade, and a restaurant all in one. From pool tables, four-person air hockey tables, to all the newest arcade machines, it has it all. If you like fun, head there for the day. Bring your kids, or bring your adult friends (who, like some of mine, are still kids) On every Small Town Sunday adventure, I get to meet the nicest people. Stay-cations really are the best kind of holiday because they

are reminders of how lucky were are to live in our neck of the woods. On your next venture towards Brant County, try to visit these great locations and also be sure to spend some time in Brantford. The best part of the weekend happened after we finished our meal and headed home. My niece turned to me and said, “Uncle Jay, can you bring me back here for my birthday?”

1 First plan your hardscapes. Items like walkways, patios, retaining walls, pools, and pergolas are the backbone of your design. Softscapes – gardens and plants – are meant to soften the overall landscape and provide privacy, colour, shade, and peacefulness. 2 Outdoor patio furniture is an investment and can pay for itself many times over in terms of functionality and pleasure. It can transform any outdoor space from bare and boring to entertaining and relaxing. 3 Reflect your personality into your garden space. Incorporate mirrors, art or a splash of whimsy. Garden accents should have no boundaries at all. 4 Often yard design is overlooked or rushed through. It is invaluable when you take the time and energy to create a landscape that suits your lifestyle needs and, of course, your wallet! 5 Co-ordinate soft furnishings and accessories with the greenery in the garden. If your garden is a collection of warm colours – yellows, oranges, reds – make selections that complement this. It will create a more harmonious outdoor space. 6 When planning your space for outdoor entertaining, look at the backyard from the inside and outside of your home. Bring unique details like a glowing fire table, hot tub, or a fountain to lure you and your guests outside for relaxation time.

7 Outdoor lighting is essential to create a memorable ambiance. Today, LED rules – shining brighter and longer to light your yard while you save money. 8 Be sure to include delicious edible plants in your garden space. Swiss Chard can be an alternative to other standard border annuals. 9 Municipalities are tightening their bylaws to protect homeowners from bad contractors. Hire a reputable design company who will properly research the bylaws and restrictions in your town. 10 Go low maintenance with your yard. Patios, decks and walkways mean less grass cutting. Also, use native plants since they have adapted to our climate and require less work. 11 Clients want to spend less time on maintaining their yard. Products like composite decking have given designers the tools to make this a reality. 12 Invest in outdoor lighting. Consider upward shining lights to call attention to that grand tree or adding a candlelit chandelier above your outdoor table. Both would enable more use of an area that would normally be unusable after the sun goes down. 13 Pergolas, arbours, cabanas, and glass-enclosed rooms offer valuable structure and focus to a yard design and often shelter dining and sitting areas from sun or rain. 14 A successful outdoor space starts from the same place as a successful interior – a carefully considered floor plan. Take some time to think about how you want to enjoy your yard space. Make sure to allow room for entertaining, dining and relaxing. 15 Garden Pea Gravel is a cost-effective alternative to hardscaping and can add relaxed and charming elegance to your garden space. We would like to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Neutral, Confederacy as determined by the Dish with One Spoon treaty. The intent of this agreement is for all nations sharing this territory to do so responsibly, respectfully and for the faces yet to come. We respect the longstanding relationships with the local Indigenous communities, the Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation.

With the fast pace of our lives seeming to accelerate at every turn, we should all take a moment to reflect on the numerous stories, places, memories and people that have truly made Southwestern Ontario one of the greatest places on earth. Each of our communities, counties and towns have contributed their own unique piece to the tapestry that can collectively be called Canada; and there is no better way to chart a course towards the future, than by glancing back to honour the past.

The Olde School Restaurant Brantford oldeschoolrestaurant.ca Inside the walls of this re-purposed 1870 Moyle School you will dine on fabulous food fit for royalty or, in this case, Queen Elizabeth, who visited in 1997. The ambiance of this Restaurant and Piano Bar is created with the collection of school days memorabilia throughout and the themed rooms like The Principal’s, where Happy Hour is held... School was surely different when I attended!

Oxford County Museum School Ingersoll Although it was never an actual school, the museum is home to all that was. Take a walk down memory lane, or if it was before your time, see what school days were like in yesteryear. This schoolhouse museum in Ingersoll collects artifacts and archival material from Oxford County. All the memories are saved here from ink wells and slate boards to lunch pails and class photos. You should be sure not to be late!

New Limburg Brewing Company Simcoe newlimburg.com School was never like this when I went! What started as a hobby, developed into a successful micro brewery housed in the old Nixon School . There is always something brewing here, like: trivia nights, concerts, movies and an open mic, where you are encouraged to bring your instruments and wet your whistle with delicious Belgium Style Ales and scrumptious menu options.

Langford Schoolhouse Brant County lconserv.org Etched into the walls of this 1870 school house, you will see the names of generations of children that attended over the years. In 1964 this school was transformed into a community hub for hosting weddings, festivals, feasts and dances. In 2012 it was purchased by the Langford Conservatory, a not-for-profit land trust that believes in preserving the land and protecting rural heritage.

Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School Brantford A survivor of the former Residential School, also known as The Mush Hole says, “There is pain in remembering but there is power too.” This belief inspired their community to turn the school into a memorial for those who suffered from abuse while the school was operated by the Government of Canada from 1885 to 1970. Let’s make sure that history is never forgotten or repeated.

Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum Selkirk Albert Einstein was quoted as saying that the poet Wilson Pugsley MacDonald was the best thing that he had found in Canada. Is it any wonder then that a museum, housed in an 1872 schoolhouse, should be dedicated to the memory of this local poet from Cheapside Road? This museum preserves the history of rural education from the time of one-room country school houses that were built by the communities they served.

Aging Gracefully

In this fast-paced age of instant gratification, it’s often easy to overlook and under appreciate the value of a hard day’s work. Sometimes the best results come from patience, process and purpose; after all, good things come to those who wait. BY Tim Zwart

Please feel free to reach out and let us know about other special folks, businesses, and organizations that are aging gracefully within your community!

History is all around us, and sometimes it pops up in some of the most unlikely of places. Have you ever been in your favourite local spot, looked around at the charming atmosphere surrounding you and thought to yourself: I wonder how long they’ve been here? As a writer and history buff, stumbling across a great story can be exhilarating. But sharing that story, conveying the emotions I felt and invoking them in others, is where the real excitement and sense of satisfaction lies. The following are three of my favourite examples for the latest instalment of our Aging Gracefully series. Paris Horticultural Society

Paris They say every great romantic relationship comes in three main stages: first the plant, then the dog, then the kids. If a woman ever gifts you a plant, fellas, she sees a future with you...so make sure not to

58 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

kill it because it’s step one in a grand and diabolical love scheme. Now you may be saying to yourself, what do I do with a plant? Where do I put it? Does it stay in the pot or need to be planted outside? Well if you’re in the Paris, ON area, are looking for the answers to these questions and more, then you’re in luck! Originally founded in 1863, the Paris Horticultural Society has been a gathering place for amateur green thumbs and gardening enthusiasts alike for decades. After several years of inactivity, the society was reorganized and given a shot of life in 1986, and hasn’t looked back since. Made up of over 100 amateurs and professionals, the society is available for anybody to join (for a small nominal fee of $15 annually). Something about getting your hands in the dirt and working with nature is as soothing as chicken soup to the soul, and being able to see the fruits of your labour season after season is truly rewarding.

Armstrong Milling Company

Hagersville armstrongbirdfood.com Though it can sometimes feel as though we only have one season in this country—and that season is winter—we do sometimes experience things like warmth and sunshine throughout a decent portion of our year. Spring is the perfect cure for our winter blues; the snow begins to melt, patches of green start coming back to our forests and our lawns and vibrant colours are once again present in nature. But perhaps the most iconic indicator of spring’s arrival are the sights and sounds of birds returning to the area after their southern migration. And they’re hungry. The bird feeder is the staple of many a country garden, and quiet afternoons spent relaxing on a warm park bench can often involve the timeless tradition of feeding the birds, an activity shared by both young and old alike. Since 1986, the pride and joy of Hagersville, ON have been the good people at Armstrong Milling. They have been providing folks near and far with the country’s premier bird food, with a selection of products and services that truly is astounding. Want food to feed the wild birds in and around your neighborhood? No problem. Have a domesticated feathered friend or two at home? They’ve got you covered. Visit armstrongbirdfood.com to learn more, see a selection of current products, and find out where to get them! Nufloors

Simcoe nufloors.ca As the saying goes, if you truly want to change a space, you need to start from the ground up. A new approach may be required, a different way of looking at things, a shift in culture, all of these things take a bottom-up approach. Very few people take this saying literally. But should they? In the world of interior spaces and decorating, often the idea is to work with the space to optimize its uses. One may decide some new furniture is in order, a fresh coat of paint may liven things up, or upgrading a few fixtures and accents is the way to go. One option that is often overlooked, but is far more functional than all of those, is flooring, and the impact of a well-designed and optimized floor can really bring a space to life. And one of the best places to start that endeavour is at your local Nu Floors location. For over twenty years, the independent owners and operators at Nu Floors have been helping their local communities to re-imagine, re-design and re-invent their indoor spaces with some of the most innovative and breathtaking material options around. Whether you’re looking for hardwood, vinyl, carpet, tile or even natural stone, Nu Floors has a material and option to suite every budget. Visit nufloors.ca to learn more, and start the process towards a beautiful experience! Live it for a day. Live it for a lifetime. SPRING 2019 59

Arts & CULTURE

Inspiring Minds

Arts and culture are an important resource in our path to building stronger connections with the present and the past, serving to document and preserve stories and ensure that history is shared. They beautify public spaces, help forge relationships where there is diversity and become stewards of strength in community. At Live Small Town, we love to promote local participation and bonds. We believe one of the best ways to engage is through the arts.

Holly.O.

Paris hollyo.ca Call me “PARIS-centric” and I would agree! It feels like I am exactly where I should be, and doing what I was meant to do. This July marks the 30th anniversary of our family’s move to Paris, Ontario. The very name Paris, virtually screams art and living here ignited a creative energy in me that I didn’t even know existed. My mode of expression has changed and evolved over the years. From watercolour to acrylic painting, From brushes to palette knives. Years of experimentation have resulted in a highly textural style that feels just right. Almost everything inspires me. Being alive inspires me. Beauty is everywhere. You can find it if you look for it and living in a lovely town like Paris provides an abundant subject matter. I will never run out of inspiration here. 68 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

Port Dover sthomsonart@outlook.com My paintings are created with acrylic and mixed media, while the energy, colour and joy of the world around me, in my small port town and community, inspires me to paint from the heart. The paintings are intuitive, but I allow play to take over and I become purposely reckless. My style or subjects change as I experiment and as I challenge myself, the bold colours remain. I strive to keep subjects simple, joyful and refreshing. Often, I create personalities within the art, that are at times whimsical or mysterious in a somewhat abstract manner. I enjoy getting lost in the process of painting, and am often told that it is apparent in my work. I also love knowing that my paintings have connected with someone and that they evoke happy memories and emotions within them. My journey as an artist began several years ago as a commercial artist followed by me achieving a certificate in Fine Arts at Mohawk College. A few years ago, after experimenting with several different media, I returned to acrylics and now acrylic painting and mixed media is my passion and I paint almost everyday in my home studio. Shelley Hamilton

Cayuga Being a photographer is a general term to me. It is my hobby but it means something different to everyone. My desire to pick up a camera came one day while I was sitting in the forest. The warm sun beams were reaching down and kissing my cheeks, while the coolness of the shaded trees hugged me. As I closed my eyes, I could hear the sounds of the birds and wildlife and I was intrigued by nature’s peacefulness. I also realized that being surrounded by nature was good for my soul and with a camera in hand, I could capture the stillness of my heart, the patience of my mind, and the secret beauty of nature. What’s a PawPaw Tree? Believe it or not, there’s a tropical fruit THRIVING in Ontario, BUT Not IN A heated greenhouses! BY kerstein mallon Most of us are familiar with the deliciousness of a ripe banana or a mango. They are mouth-watering, full of healthy nutrients and a welcomed treat on a hot summer’s day. But how about marrying these two flavours together? The result: a long forgotten fruit, resembling a papaya, the pawpaw - an exotic fruit with a tropical flavour. Also known as ‘River Fruit’, this tasty morsel once grew in abundance along waterways and river banks across the temperate zones of eastern Canada and the US. But with the rise of supermarkets, global foods and industrialization, people forgot about this nutritious food source. At one time, it grew wild in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk and is slowly regaining popularity as a celebrated food source. As more and more people are

inclined to return to a more natural way of life, food preparations such as gathering herbs and fruit from the forest is gaining traction and many are searching for nouveau ways to bring back a more simple way of living and rediscover the wisdom of the old ways. At one time, the indigenous people would have gathered the pawpaw fruit in late August/early September and after enjoying the short but plentiful harvest, they would have dried it. The preserve was a tasty ingredient added to various dishes such as corn bread and soups. The pawpaw fruit is high in antioxidants. It is also rich in Vitamin A and C and contains potassium, which provided nutritional benefits for the cold months ahead. The Pawpaw tree flowers in spring. Its pungent

fragrance, with gorgeous maroon flowers that bloom from March through May, entices flies and beetles for pollination. The tree has long leafy flourishing, green leaves, akin to those found in tropical forests, that turn a striking yellow in the fall. Much like apples, the tree bears its fruit in late summer, early fall. In recent times, this small but attractive, butterfly friendly plant has acquired the starring role in many urban gardeners’ designs, as they are easy to grow and accommodate the desire for an edible landscape. It would seem that Pawpaw amnesia has

been replaced by curious gardeners and chefs everywhere. In recent times, many places hold festivals in honour of this squishyfleshed morsel, worthy of Eden. People are learning to make ice-creams, desserts, jams and even beer, flavoured with this fruit. For me, I am intrigued. I have ordered three trees from one of the local growers below. They are all a wealth of information on how to grow these abstract little waterside dwellers, so you can discover for yourself why this exciting new, old world of flavour is slowly making a comeback.

OUT OF THE

ORDINARY

Connecting with nature offers a wealth of benefits, not to mention the sheer enjoyment of being surrounded by beauty. So go play outside! BY Tara Carpenter The world of wild edible and medicinal plants is so vast and intimidating to most people. Wild foraging is not something that you can solely learn out of a book. You need to get into the wild to see, smell and taste the plants in order to know them. The real healing takes place when you become intimate with that wild plant. Foraging for food in the wild can be a fun hobby that is a necessary survival skill. Obtaining ancient knowledge of identification and medicinal application of wild edible plants within our local forests is immeasur-

ably valuable. This is a lost art that once was an essential part of our everyday knowledge that we have misplaced through the generations. While traveling, tell someone that you are a Canadian and what will they say... “Oh... Canadian maple syrup on pancakes!” It’s probably the most Canadian thing ever! Maple sap was a valuable source of sugar for the Indigenous peoples, and is considered a nutritious wild edible. This time honored tradition consisted of making a diagonal cut with the lower bark being removed

and a wooden spile inserted. Bark dishes were placed below to collect the dripping sap. Fires were kept burning to boil the water off. Maple syrup is a natural food with significant amounts of antioxidants, zinc, manganese and riboflavin. So remember that our Southern Ontario Carolinian zone has the most bio-diversity in all of Canada. Be empowered with the healing benefits of the wild plants that are in your own backyard. Get out into our local forests and meadows and have fun while foraging for yourself in Mother Nature. There are many poisonous plants, so always reference identification with multiple field guides and consult an expert in the field of wild edibles.

Tara Carpenter discovered her love for nature and the outdoors at an early age while growing up on a Norfolk farm. She has always been an avid enthusiast of nature and travel, and for 17 years she roamed all corners of the globe in search of adventure. From sailing Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to hitch-hiking across Canada, Tara has made herself at home in nature’s embrace. Grounded by the unique challenges of motherhood, Tara now encourages other parents and their families to get outdoors and foster their own passion for environmental connectedness. Hunter’s Maple Bush

Richardson’s Farm & Market

Dunnville richardsonsfarm.com This year Richardson’s hosted three culinary dining events called, The Sweetest Smell on Earth Maple Experience and they were not your average trip to the sugar bush! Participants journeyed to a corner of the diverse Carolinian forest for an exclusive, hands-on, interactive event. All senses were engaged as they collected the boiled sap in a hollowed log, bottled their own pure maple syrup, and enjoyed a maple-inspired meal prepared by local chefs who were accompanied by live music. If you missed it, check it out next year.

Beachville huntersmapleproducts.com Today, the 7th generation of the Hunter family can be found helping mix batter and flipping pancakes in the kitchen of the Pancake House. The Hunter’s Pancake House restaurant has an extensive homemade breakfast menu with the superstar item being “real” maple syrup. Quality traditional maple products are available for purchase from the family’s 100-acre maple sugar bush.

Our Ontario southwest offers a copious quantity of wild edibles just waiting to be gobbled up by anyone who knows where and when to forage. Here are just a few of the delights to be had.

Sugar Maple Acer saccharu The celebrated sugar maple is our national tree, has the highest sugar content in its veins, and its leaf graces our flag. This tree yields the highest sugar concentration and volume of sap, making it a superior candidate for commercial tapping. This process, passed on from Natives to early settlers, is one of the few wild foods that can be purchased in stores.

Jakeman’s Maple Products Chambers Pure Maple Products

Waterford In the cozy quaint cabin of the Chambers Maple Shop you will find an array of unique locally homemade maple products and specialty gift items. Come in to witness the lights and artistic display of their cute miniature village with all its charm. Chambers maple syrup is processed right on site in their sugar shack where you can see this magical process for yourself.

jakemansmaplesyrup.com From the tree to the bottle! The Jakeman family has been supporting local communities, and producing an award winning blend of 100% pure maple syrup since 1876. Jakeman’s maple syrup is sourced from local farms around Ontario. You will find an assortment of their maple products in stores all across Canada. Jakeman’s newest product is Certified Organic Maple Syrup.

Black Walnut Juglans nigra This prized hardwood tree was a valuable food source for the Indigenous peoples. Not only were the sweet nuts that are high in antioxidants and fatty acids eaten, but the oil from the nuts were used as a much needed insect repellent. A variety of trees can yield sweet liquid gold and the syrup from tapping black walnut sap has a unique earthy and nutty flavour.

Paper Birch Betula papyrifera Cheers!! Mix the sap from the birch tree with honey or sugar to ferment into an extraordinary wine or beer. The paper birch has a lower sugar content than sugar maples, but has become a sought-after specialty syrup due to its high mineral and antioxidant composition. Drink the sap straight from the tree as a refreshing beverage, similar to tropical coconut water. Live it for a day. Live it for a lifetime. SPRING 2019 79

Homecoming

We left the city to grow flowers and save an old house in a familiar place. BY Cynthia Zamaria It was not an easy decision to completely change our life path and become savers of a stately historic home. Or, was it? After years working in the corporate world in Toronto, my husband Graham (Loughton) and I were ready for change. We were planning to move with our three children to the countryside just outside of Peterborough and make our weekend retreat our permanent residence. We had just completed a renovation on the farmhouse there - literally, the dust had started to settle. On top of that, we had one full season in the field and I had sort of figured out how to grow cut flowers on a larger scale and take this part-time passion into a full-time, florist-farmer business. But then, one day, I was pursuing one of my hobbies trolling the real estate listings. And there she was. That was the beginning of the end. Graham and I have always been attracted to old, character homes in need of love. Places we could transform, bring back to glory, make happy again (homes have souls after 82 LIVE SMALL TOWN livesmalltownmag.ca

all). We’ve had our share of fixer projects but one on this scale, with this provenance, was different. For bonus points, this home sits proudly in the same small town where Graham went to high school. You never quite know where life will take you. And our journey, surprisingly, took us back – back home to Port Dover, Ontario. So while we analyzed the pros and cons of leaving behind our rural dream, the decision was really already made. Millar House called our name. She was built by Scottish immigrants, Frederick and Isabella Millar in 1857 as a bucolic estate. So there would be space to grow a garden and a weathered home to challenge my interior design skills. As we embarked on a year-long renovation project, Graham became reacquainted with his home town by sharing it with us. Every landmark had a story. Each old friend we ran into had a tale. While there’s been comforting familiarity, there’s also been refreshing change. A thriving farm-to-table movement, wineries, artisans galore, a bustling theatre, palm trees on the beach and inspiring shopping. There’s a sense that this place is on the brink of something exciting. With each passing week as we’re not only welcomed into the community but invited to participate in it, we become more captivated by small-town living. With Millar House mostly done, we’re eager to become even more involved and to respect our role as caretakers of this important home and share her generously. So, in the end, yes it was an easy decision to change our path. It’s been said that sometimes on the way to your dream, you get lost and find a better one. We have.
