Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of the Careers eMag. Many of you can see that the end of your time at Long Road Sixth Form College is approaching rapidly, and it is a testament to your determination to succeed that is reflected each day in the LRC. With assessments around the corner, it is heart-warming to see such dedication as many of you revise and work hard to do the best that you can in the weeks ahead. Good luck. Further afield, the news is discussing how the economy took a bashing in the first quarter of 2021, shrinking by 1.5%. However, when schools reopened in March, and retail experienced a strong bounce-back as people once again started to visit the shops, it is encouraging to see that the economy grew by 2.1% (the fastest monthly growth since last August).

Let’s hope that change for the positive continues. Certainly, the latest estimate by the Bank of England is for a 5.75% growth over the year; the fastest in 70 years! Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, echoes these positive signs, stating that, “…the economy is getting back on track”. So there is a lot to work towards, and a lot of positive sounds being made by the UK’s top brass. Perhaps some of the offers in this eMag edition will help you to achieve your goals, whether it is in University, a job, or an Apprenticeship? And for those in Year 1, we hope that the year ahead returns to stability and offers you opportunities to consolidate all that you have learned so far, as well as develop the knowledge for what lies in your future. FROM LOCKDOWN TO RELAXATION OF COVID RULES: TIPS ON LOOKING AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

For many of us, the gradual easing of lockdown brings longed-for opportunities (even if at a social distance) – to see friends, play sports, resume contact with family in ‘real space’ or get back to work that we value. But for many of us, even the happy, much-anticipated changes and readjustment can be difficult for our mental health.

The mental health foundation website has a number of resources that can help,

Mental wellbeing and reading Losing yourself in a good book has been shown to reduce your levels of stress. Research by Dr David Lewis showed that reading as little as six minutes a day can reduce stress levels by 60% by reducing your heart rate, easing muscle tension, and altering your state of mind. If picking up a physical book isn’t for you, most authors release audiobooks also. Recommendations: 1. Notes on a Nervous Planet - Matt Haig 2. Good Vibes, Good Life - Vex King 3. The Anxiety Journal: Exercises to soothe stress and eliminate anxiety wherever you are - Corinne Sweet 4. Calm - Fearne Cotton 5. Happy - Fearne Cotton 6. Quiet - Fearne Cotton 7. FOCUS ON EMPLOYMENT AND WORK EXPERIENCE

What is a 3DCV Have you ever heard of a 3DCV? Recruitment trends are constantly changing; if you want to be employable, you need to evolve. A 3D CV might be just the thing you need. With so many talented job seekers in the world, it is tough to get noticed, especially if you want to find work in a creative industry; they are some of the most competitive jobs available. A classic CV is a rather bland document that summarises your past experience, achievements, skills, and education to show off your personality in two pages or less, which is hard to acheive.

A 3D CV is much more effective at making a great first impression. You get the chance to demonstrate your creativity, personality, and professional skills quickly and in your own unique way. It is proven that people make a good or bad impression within the first 7 seconds and it is usually affected by what they hear, smell or see. Switching to this new style of CV should enable you to trigger these senses and make a great connection.
