Santa’s coming by stealth If Santa didn't make it to your house last year, it wasn't because you were naughty, it was because Defence shot down Santa (see the poem below). Nevertheless, things are looking good for Christmas this year. Santa sent a message to MLL saying he’s definitely coming to Mawson Lakes in 2018.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the skies, air defenses were up with electronic eyes. Combat pilots were nestled in ready-room beds, as enemy silhouettes danced in their heads. Every jet on the apron, each SAM in its tube, was fully alert, and ready to move. Advanced technology gave coverage so dense that nothing that flew could slip through the defence. When out of the klaxon arose such a clatter I dashed to the screen to see what was the matter. And there was the source of the warning we’d heeded an incoming blip, by eight escorts preceded. "Alert status RED!" went the word down the wire, as we gave every system the codes to FIRE. Missiles turned to the target and converged, till the tracks on the radar all finally merged. The sky was lit up with a demonic light, as the foe met his fate in the dark Aussie night. So we sent out some recon to look for debris, yet all that they found, both on land and on sea, were kid's toys, a red hat, a charred leather boot, broken sleigh bells, white hair, and a deer’s parachute. Now it isn’t quite Christmas, with Santa shot down, there were unhappy kids in each city and town. Cause the Spirit of Christmas can’t hope to evade the web of defenses we’ve carefully made. But a mission has been building by night and by day, the elves have constructed a radar-proof sleigh. So let’s wait for Christmas, in cheer and in health, for the season has hope: Santa’s coming by stealth! Author unknown: poem modified by the editor.

Community Conversations

have your say...

Election apathy overcome Only a small percentage of the population vote in council elections. According to a street poll, the reasons people give for not voting are lack of awareness, don’t know who to vote for, have never met a council member, don’t know the issues, can’t tell the difference between a council, state or federal election. But this is NOT the case in Mawson Lakes. Why? Because we have Mawson Lakes Living. As a community we were informed via the editor’s comments, introduced to our elected representatives through their columns in the magazine, knew the key issues affecting Mawson Lakes and knew the candidates for mayor. Thank you MLL for informing us and encouraging us to throw off election apathy and cast an informed vote. Congratulations to the successful candidates. It’s encouraging to see that our votes really made a difference. - John Hanna Save your empties This Christmas please save your empty cans, bottles and cardboard drinks. Volunteers for the Royal Flying Doctor Service will call and collect them for recycling. The money we get will be donated to support 71 aircraft and the medical teams who operate every two minutes throughout the year. We hope to collect 5,000 items by the year’s end, to bring us to a total donation of $500 for 2018. To arrange pickup contact mholtby@bigpond. com - Mike Holtby Pruning roses No two people prune roses the same way, but it doesn’t matter how you do it, roses love a cut back and they all turn out well after it - Kim Syrus, rose breeder

Who gets MLL first When MLL arrives in our letterbox we fight over who gets it first. We like the puzzles and the crosswords and Nigella’s page, and dad likes the local news. He reads it from cover to cover. The Christmas page was really good last month. We saw an ad for the Christmas Warehouse and went to the shop to buy a tree and get some decorations for our house - Mia (7) and Alessia (10) with dad Keith Trends in gardening Gardening has to be easy and plant breeders are developing plants and products to suit new trends, such as smaller gardens, easy gardening and fertilisers in liquid form. Everybody loves a garden, but they don’t love gardening. Get yourself a garden that suits the time you have to give it. - Kim Syrus, Nursery and Garden Industry, talking to Mawson Lakes Garden Club. Working with Mawson Lakes Living At the end of this year we are moving to Sydney where more job opportunities are open to us. I have really enjoyed living in Mawson Lakes, and I must say that writing for MLL has been one of my best ever experiences. I have interviewed some wonderful people. Linda is honest and generous and I will miss you all. - Gayatri Nair

Salisbury Council for 2018-2022 Congratulations The hard-working and ever-popular Gillian Aldridge was re-elected with a strong majority as mayor in the November council elections. Gillian (72) has been on council for 30 years, including the past 10 as mayor and the previous seven as deputy mayor. She lives in Mawson Lakes and she told me she works 7 days and 7 nights a week. In West Ward (that takes in Mawson Lakes), Beau Brug was elected as our representative, and newcomer Lisa Braun, a Mawson Lakes resident, will join him as our voice on council. For the first time in the history of Salisbury Council, women now outnumber men 8 to 6. Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM with MLL Editor Dr Linda Vining

TURBULENCE A woman was flying to Adelaide to be with her family for Christmas when the aeroplane hit severe turbulence and the passengers were holding on tightly as the plane rocked through the air. The woman tapped the priest who was in the seat in front and said: "You’re a man of God. Can’t you do something about this?" He replied: "Sorry, I can’t. I’m in sales, not management."

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

The judge asked the defendant what he was charged with.

Thongs Wearing thongs in summer is an Australian tradition. Unfortunately typical thongs are very flat and offer the feet no support, resulting in foot pain such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Achilles pain and pain in the front of feet.

"Doing my Christmas shopping early," was the reply. "That's not illegal! How early were you shopping?"

As the warmer weather approaches, Mawson Lakes Podiatry Clinic is excited to let you know about a new summer product we have decided to stock which will reduce foot pain commonly seen with conventional thongs.

"Before the store was open."

The new product is called, "Archie’s Arch Support Thongs". These thongs incorporate legitimate orthotic support but still just look like normal thongs!

They incorporate a number of key features making them a more comfortable and safer alternative.

Check and

Is wear ok when it comes to teeth? The answer is yes and no.

Our teeth are clever. They are designed to wear so Dr Peter limits. Bertossa BDS long as the wear is within healthy Surprisingly even quite worn teeth often don’t have any symptoms. The most rapid form of wear arises from teeth to teeth contact in our sleep (something we all do). Even this is not a problem and for most people remains within normal limits. When dentists see advanced wear that is beyond normal healthy limits there is another factor at play – acid exposure. So where does the acid come from? There are only two ways acids can get to teeth, one is through over-consumption of acidic foods and drinks (e.g. carbonated, citrus and energy drinks). The other, less obvious source of acid wwthe exposure is reflux from w.stomach.

Beautiful Garden Award

Red and White Garden Red and white are the colours associated with Christmas, so MLL has saved its last garden award for 2018 for a garden that displays these vibrant colours in magnificent abundance. In summer the strong red colours come from Saville red roses and red geraniums, while white iceberg roses, white plumbago and white lantana intermingle and add a cooling contrast at different levels. But no matter what the season, this gently curved garden edged with a bright green lawn looks stunning. I always stop to admire it and often see Stewart and Shirley bending over tending to their plants, or adding fertiliser and mulch. This is a well-fed, much-loved garden and it displays its health and vigour by beautifying the streetscape at 16 Sheaoak Drive. "We started out many years ago with the theme of red and white but recently have introduced other colours to add variety," said Shirley."The first thing we do each morning is take a walk in the garden, delight in new blooms, deadhead the old blooms and listen to the birdsong. Abandoned Trolleys by Nigella We’ve all heard of abandoned pets, but what about abandoned trolleys? When mummy and I go walking, we collect abandoned trolleys from the bushland, the wetlands and nearby streets, for pick-up. I don’t mind a ride in a trolley. Mummy sits me on some newspaper or catalogues we find lying around, and off we rattle along the bush tracks and footpaths. "Hang on Nigella," she says, "this is going to be a rough ride." And it is - awfully bumpy, no springs, but good fun. Trolleys are an eyesore, especially when dumped in eco-sensitive areas like the wetlands where my doggie friends and I like to walk. They block up the footpaths forcing us onto the roads.

We've collected lots of trolleys, all from Woolworths (green handles). The supermarket is very keen to get them back, so they have a free trolley collection service called 'Trolley Trackers'. A big noisy truck calls to collect the 4 wheel carts. Woolworths replace trolleys each year at great expense either because they go missing, are stolen or damaged beyond repair. The average trolley costs $150 to replace, while trolleys with special features (such as child seats) can cost up to $600. Help us keep Mawson Lakes beautiful. If you spot abandoned carts call TROLLEY TRACKERS on 1800 641 497 www.trolleytracker.com.au

Christmas for Cats I'm looking forward to Christmas because I'm partial to turkey and my sister, Ginger, likes olives. Christmas is better than New Year’s Eve because there are no frightening noises outside. I have to have my Staff nearby on New Year's Eve because loud bangs hurt my ears. At Christmas, the Staff puts up decorations and trees for us to play with. There are lights on the tree and the electric cords are covered with material because Ginger has bitten them in the past. She has also tried to eat the leaves off the tree because she does this with all the indoor plants and it makes her sick on the floor. The Staff don’t like this and I can’t understand why Ginger does it, but she’s a bit of a slow learner. We get lots of toys for Christmas and we love the catnip ones. I like the Christmas cards too because they are great fun to bat onto the floor. The people in our house have a good time at Christmas and they drink red water and eat lots of different foods like nuts, but I don't like nuts or red water, but I do like the laughter, gifts and happiness that comes to our place at Christmas. A big PURR to all my fans for a safe and happy Christmas - Fred
