The life and loves of the birds and the bees in Mawson Lakes Bees are everywhere in Mawson Lakes and the most common variety is the European Honey Bee (pictured on the cover). The bee’s home is a hive, maybe in some old wood near wildflowers, where they share Nicole (MLL designer) Linda (editor) their home with tens and Nigella (public relations) of thousands of other Photo by Alison Attwood, President of the Mawson Lakes Photography Club bees. Each bee has a clearly defined role and although they are small they have a complex family structure made up of three types of bees. The Queen bee is the boss of her colony. She spends most of her time in the hive unless she is out mating with a boy bee in the air. She mates with several males and her job is to reproduce in the spring. She lives for 3-4 years.

The Worker bee is mostly a sterile female who does not reproduce. Her role is to collect honey, clean the hive and look after the baby bees. These bees have a sting to protect the hive. Once they sting they die. If a bee stings you, pull out the stinger, do not rub it in and get help. The Drone is a male born to mate with a Queen. Unfortunately for him, he dies after performing this lethally convulsive effort! Next to a story about birds. Love and care come in many forms and Nigella has written a story with a different love twist about Roxy and Rio the colourful parrot. Turn to page 28. A new year is full of promise. Take a look in the Centrefold at what the people of ML are planning for 2017 and ways to achieve it.

have your say...

Future for Woolworths When you walk into Woolworths at Mawson Lakes there’s a good buzz of people, but it will be interesting to see what happens in 2017 when other supermarkets open in new buildings nearby. Woolworths is in a very competitive marketplace and it is struggling. Woolworths has already sold off its Masters hardware stores. It is selling its petrol business and its online division Ezibuy and there is speculation that it may sell off Big W which posted a $14.9 million loss last year. - John Chevron Children are not racist When schools resume in 2017 children as young as Year 4 will be taught about racism in a new Human Rights Commission program. What a lot of nonsense. As a lifetime classroom teacher it has always been obvious to me that children are not racist by nature. Generally, they accept differences and mix together happily, oblivious of colour or culture in our schools where inclusivity is greatly valued. Racism develops in a child’s mind from parent’s attitudes and hateful comments. These are absorbed by their youngsters and guide their behaviour and attitudes and this is far more powerful than any classroom instruction. Let children enjoy school without the burden of racial education. The curriculum is already too crowded with politically correct instruction. - Eric Pearce Road to nowhere I always read Mawson Lakes Living from cover to cover. In the December issue I was interested in the Mid Term Council Report by Cr Steve White about the causeway connecting Shoalhaven and the Cascades but I was disappointed that there was no mention of connecting The Sanctuary to Mawson Central. I moved to The Sanctuary seven years ago and was told that the underpass connecting us to the other side of the railway line was to be completed by the end of that year 2009. We are still waiting! The paths leading to the underpass and away from it are in place but they are like a road to nowhere. Can Salisbury Council give the residents of The Sanctuary some idea of when and if this underpass will ever be completed. - Andy Barnard 4

I have worked in Mawson Lakes for 6 years. Started as a hairdressing assistant for Marcela, then did an apprenticeship and this month I will become a fully qualified hairdresser. We have the magazine in the salon and I particularly like to read about the new businesses opening in Mawson Lakes. - Daniela Roncal, Shoalhaven Parking problems a turnoff Where will we park when the new shops on Elder Smith Drive open and when Aldi takes half the car parks in front of Target. I have the solution . . . shop elsewhere. After going to Woolworths 6 times in 5 weeks to find the same product not available 5 times, we have started shopping else where. Sorry Mawson Lakes traders, but you are alienating your local customers. - Michael O’Donnell Parking solved Many people complain about inadequate parking at the shops in Mawson Lakes. Did you know there is an upper parking level at Woloworths. Drive up the ramp and come down to the shops on the escalator. - Gordon Engine Breeding mosquitoes Mosquitoes are bad this year after all the rain. Check you are not breeding mosquitos in your yard in stagnant pools of water in potplant dishes, watering cans, old tyres, kids toys left outdoors and pools in gutters. - Itchy Santos

Business - Call of Duty When the video game Call of Duty Black Ops II was released in 2013 it became the largest selling entertainment product in history. While this war game originates in America, the software engineer who creates the animation system for the characters, lives and works in Mawson Lakes. Ryan Feltrin can be found in Technology Park using high speed internet to make the characters look and move in a realistic way so that the game is as immersive as possible. "The animation must be dynamic and characters must be fluid and as life-like as technology allows," he said. Ryan has always been fascinated with computer games. As a boy he wanted to figure out how things work, and at school he enjoyed physics and maths problems which led him to study software engineering at the University of South Australia (Mawson Lakes). When, as a student, he started putting his games on the internet for fun, the US designers took notice and approached him.

"My hobby became my business and I never tire of working in this innovative field." Each year a new Call of Duty is released and the designers keep looking to the future. Originally, Call of Duty was based on WWII and players assumed the role of an American soldier, but the landscape has evolved since then and Ryan says that mobile devices are driving the demand for faster, smarter games and more interactivity. Future warfare is a new frontier for games, so too are mobile active games that promote physical challenges (e.g. Pokemon / VR).

Software engineer Ryan Feltrin working on Call of Duty in Technology Park

Also shaping the territory are social sharing systems that stimulate social experiences. Ryan says that working in Technology Park with high speed internet allows him to collaborate and share information with his American counterparts and this is fundamental to his success in this area. "I'm excited that Adelaide is to become part of the global gigabit community and the first city in Australia to become a Gig City which will soon allow me to showcase my work in real time. It’s the next step forward in a rapidly evolving telecommunications economy." "Australia is a clever country and knowledge is the global currency. The world is ever changing, but it is up to us to adapt and innovate to be ahead of the curve." said Ryan. Ed

Australia Day in Salisbury Each year on 26 January we celebrate Australia Day. It’s a public holiday when we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and honour people who have made an outstanding contribution to our society at a national and a local level. The date goes back to 1788 with an historical event that marks the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip. In contemporary Australia our celebrations reflect our diverse society. On Australia Day, half of the nation’s population of 24 million attend either an organised community event, or get together with family and friends. Yet Australia Day is much more than barbeques and fireworks.

At our local level, in the City of Salisbury the Mayor will welcome new citizens in a citizenship ceremony held in Carisbrooke Park (just up the road from Mawson Lakes). Council also announces its Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year. Go along and see who will receive these honours in 2017. Australia Day in Carisbooke Park is a family picnic day hosted by The Rotary Club of Salisbury who provide a fabulous free breakfast and lots of activities for the kids. Don’t miss the flag raising by the Australian Air League in their blue uniforms. Arrive early, bring your fold up chairs and find a spot under the trees for a memorable day out. Home Loan Help with Anthony Vancura Getting yourself out of debt If you're struggling with debt and you feel that you're in over your head, you need to think carefully about your financial direction. Here’s a simple plan that will get your debt under control: • Consolidate your debts into the one with the lowest interest rate. This could be your home loan where interest rates are the lowest. When it comes to credit cards, keep just one with the lower credit limit and destroy the rest. • Now, there is no point in completing Step 1 without creating a budget to ensure that you're living within your means (where your income is higher than your expenses). • Seek professional help with a financial adviser who can help you clarify your financial goals and work out a plan that suits your finances and lifestyle. • Don't borrow more unless it's for a productive purpose such as investing or building future profits. Before borrowing, make sure you have a realistic plan for paying the money back.

Welcome to the New Year Photo: Uni SA campus by Nobuyuki Kawashima

Voice of the People: WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS? A New Year’s resolution is a tradition in which a person makes a promise about self-improvement or to do something nice for others. Some resolutions are flimsy and crumble before the lights go on, others are serious and herald a new chapter. MLL spoke to locals about their resolutions for 2017 and found that, instead of weaving dreams in the air, people had clear aspirations for the year ahead. Here is what they said: Sonia Monge wants to find a job as a phlebotomist preferably in ML, and her daughter Kassandra (10) is going to write an article for Mawson Lakes Living for the kid’s page.

Katie wants to start trade school in 2017. She has aspirations of becoming a hairdresser.

Stefan Bratis is focussed on good health in 2017 and wants to undertake a Masters Degree in Taxation.

Bradley Todd is studying aviation to become a pilot, so in 2017 he has resolved to improve his study efficency and organisation skills.

Happy New Year! A new year is like a blank sheet of paper, ready to be filled with exciting ideas and big promises to self. Each January we get a fresh start - 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, all providing opportunities to be a better version of ourself.

When MLL asked people what they wished for themselves in 2017, two reoccurring themes were evident - to be happy and to be better organised. So on these pages you'll find a run down on what makes a happy person and how to be tidier.

Happy are those who can laugh at themselves, they will always have entertainment. Happy are those who can distinguish between a mountain and a molehill, they will save themselves a lot of trouble. Happy are those who can appreciate a smile and overlook a scowl, their path will be sunlit. Happy are those who think before acting, they will avoid foolish mistakes. Happy are those who can look seriously at small things and peacefully at serious things, they will be appreciated. Happy are those who know how to be silent and smile even when they are interrupted and contradicted, they will have many friends. (adapted from Joseph Folliet)

Declutter your life in 2017 When it comes to clutter, a clean-up is on most people’s new year’s TO DO list. Easier said than done. But now there is help in a revolutionary organisational strategy called the KonMari Method. Written by Japanese professional organiser, Marie Kondo, it describes a simple way to declutter your life, from clothes to books to rooms and knickknacks.

discarded quite a bit - it's time to properly FOLD what you're keeping. The KonMari method dictates folding shirts and pants into small squares and then storing them vertically in a drawer or shelf so you can see every single possession - and nothing gets squished at the bottom of a pile. Illustrations in the book show how to do this.

While many other organizing methods ask you to think about whether you’ve used a certain item recently or whether you plan on using it soon, Marie Kondo wants you to answer just one simple question when it comes to any of the items in your house:

Marie’s method has revolutionised decluttering. Basically she says we fail at decluttering because we make the mistake of looking for things to throw out. What we should be doing is finding the things we want to keep. "Identifying the things that make you happy: that is the work of tidying." she says

Does it bring you joy? If you answer yes, you keep the item. If you hesitate or say no, donate it or throw it out. It’s simple, it’s brilliant, and it’s something that's completely intuitive. You can spend a lot of time justifying how something might at some point be useful and therefore decide to keep it, but whether something brings you joy is an emotional question and one that can be answered almost instantly: If you feel joy or if you don’t feel joy: there's no need to make it more complicated than that. For example, take a good, hard look at your wardrobe and bedroom drawers. Marie Kondo recommends taking everything out and making one big pile to go through all at once. Ask yourself: What do I wear regularly? What sparks joy? If you truly love an item, keep it. But if you're saving a certain piece of clothing for an indeterminate occasion or when you slim down, say goodbye. When you've gone through everything - and

In Kondo’s worldview when you’ve finished tidying your home, your life will change dramatically. Your relationships will improve! Your ambition will thrive! Your career path will clear! And you will have diarrhea (seriously.) According to Kondo, the process of tidying your home with the intensity and dedication that the KonMari Method demands can actually create a "detox phenomenon" that can lead to clearer skin, weight loss, and clean-as-a-whistle bowels.

Kondo has written 4 books that are available from the local library or for sale online. Her best seller is The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up

Beauty product clean out It’s a new year and time to toss out all the out-ofdate and out-of-fashion beauty products that fill your drawers and bathroom cabinets. Like the food in your fridge, the makeup in your bathroom goes off. As time goes by the quality of the products deteriorate - ingredients start to separate, active ingredients lose their powers and bacteria forms. All of which can cause irritation to your skin and clog you fine features. Here are some guidelines to give your makeup a clean bill of health.

MASCARA If used daily, mascara is good for 3 months. If used less frequently, toss it after 6 months. It’s a breeding ground for bacteria.

FOUNDATION Liquids last roughly 12 months, cream-to-powder formulas two years and power foundations (loose or pressed) can last up to five years. In that time your skin colour and tone is likely to change so it’s best to buy fresh every few years.

LIPSTICKS Bacteria grows on old lipsticks so throw out after 2 years. If it smells bad, it is.

20

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 115 - January 2017

EYESHADOW and other powders, such as blush can last 2 years or more, unless they have been wet in which case you need to bin them after 6 months.

PERFUME If stored in its box, away from heat and light and not on a shelf in the humid bathroom, perfume will last six to 18 months. Once a bottle is opened it should be used up because scent evaporates and perfumes change smell.

EYELINERS AND LIP LINERS Can last up to two years and will last longer if sharpened regularly.

NAIL POLISH It’s time to throw it out if the product separates and won’t stay mixed. A good polish should be useable for 2 years.

Heuristic Thinking I rather enjoyed a hands-on surgical course last weekend in Sydney focussing on implant placement.

Something I would not have expected at this course was a heuristic thinking test. Heuristic thinking is Peter Bertossa BDS worth a google search. We areDrDr allPeter beneficiaries Bertossa BDS and victims of it. Heuristic thinking is the type of thinking that allows us all to form very quick judgments in situations based on automatic assumptions, instead of making a slower, more critical analysis of what is really happening. We need heuristic thinking to function and make quick decisions whether in social, practical or survival problem-solving situations. In this case, the test was a speed maths exercise, where no calculators were allowed. About 10 fairly easy-to-add-up numbers were presented in sequence on a projector and our job was to add them together and get the right answer. As the numbers quickly went up, sometimes in 1000s, sometimes 10s, sometimes 100s, our heuristics were doing all the work, with no time to critically consider the numbers. wAlmost w the whole room (yes, including me) failed. w.denta

Have you considered that better achievement at school might not be a question of greater attention or more effort? Not even more tutoring. Maybe your child needs better information processing! Sometimes children get poor grades or develop poor reading because, try as they may, they cannot easily process the information that they are seeing or hearing. Imagine looking at a fuzzy picture on a TV screen. It takes a lot of effort to figure it out, and you don’t want to do it for long. This is a problem that cannot be remedied at school because it’s an issue of brain function. It’s not easy for your child to improve in school while these processing problems keep affecting how they can learn. If you are unsure whether these are affecting your child, talk to us about a screening assessment. We have interventions, some during the school holidays that deal with information processing and can help your child achieve more of their potential this year. Roxy and Rio

by Nigella

My lovely gentle friend Roxy (golden retriever) and his mum Katarina were out walking in Mawson Lakes one morning when they found a baby parrot that had fallen out of its nest in the big storms. "What’s this tiny baby doing in the grass?" said Roxy, signally to Katarina to come and have a look. "It’s a Rainbow Lorikeet, but it won’t survive without its mother to care for it," explained Katarina. So they took the weak baby home, called him Rio and researched how to care for abandoned parrots. Roxy and Katarina have rescued many native birds, looked after them and returned them to their natural habitat, but when you rescue a baby bird and raise him in a cage his chances of survival in the big bird world are not good, so Rio has become a family pet. Katarins says that he is doing well and

learning some manners. Roxy is hoping he will learn to talk; all they get now are squeaks, but parrots can be good conversationalists who mimic their owners. During the day when the family is out, Rio lives in a large toy-filled cage in the backyard where he is safe, and at night he comes in for a bit of TV. When he was little the family even took him camping so they could feed him regularly. When everyone comes home he plays on the grass and practices his flying. Other birds come to visit and talk to Rio (but sadly, not his parents). When I'm out walking in the mornings I sometimes see Roxy and Katarina collecting fresh native flowers from the bushes around the lake to take home for Rio. Katarina makes up a sweet nectar supplement because parrots mainly live on flowers and need nectar. Rio also loves fruit and vegetables. He loves pears the most. Photos by Katarina Husakova
