Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 124 - October 2017

Spring What a joy to watch the birds in Mawson Lakes filling their tummies with fresh food and raising their babies. One of these birds is the Rainbow Lorikeet on this month's cover. These colourful birds are often seen in Mawson Lakes feeding noisily on the fruit, pollen and nectar of a variety of trees. They nest in the hollows of gum trees, aggressively defending the nesting site. If you'd like to learn about the habits of this bird and others seen in Mawson Lakes, go to the free MLL online book on birds (details below). Five percent of the population in ML is Indian and Indians love singing and dancing and fine food. The biggest festival of the year for them is Diwali and it's happening this month. Our young writer Preet tells us about this fabulous festival on page 24 and Gayatri provides an Indian recipe that she makes for special occasions.

An increasingly popular event in October is Halloween when the children dress up and visit the neighbours. Nigella and I enjoy the fun of fancy-dress although Nigella is a bit scared when ghoulish figures knock on her door. I dress up as a friendly 'Purple Witch' with a bagful of treats. This year we have something special going on, so go to page 23 to find out what it is. The spring weather is enticing me outside and I have been down on my knees in the garden, also cleaning out low cupboards. If the motivation of spring is getting to you too, turn to our Homemaker Centrefold where we have assembled local home suppliers and retailers who can give your castle a new look, or help repair any problems.

have your say...

Lions The Lions Club is excited that young Lions are establishing a Mawson Lakes Lions Club. Since May this year, and with the support of their host club, Gilles Plains Lions Club, they have managed to induct 12 members. A meeting venue has been sourced, they have established their own website and set up their own Facebook page. They need 20 plus members to charter. If you would like to be part of this community-minded organisation contact mawsonlakeslions@gmail.com - Patrick Williams, Lions Chairman Zone 8 Dry Creek misnomer Why is Dry Creek so wrongly named? It is not a creek. The word creek makes it sound like a scrubby, narrow, arid watercourse, when in fact it travels 28 km, passing through many suburbs, feeding a huge area of wetlands and providing extensive green recreation areas. It is certainly not dry. It has a wide floodplain that is frequently flooded causing the closure of roads. Many bridges span this waterway which transports one third of Adelaide's stormwater and runoff to the Gulf. I think it needs a new name. Oliver Brueck Foodpark Residents of the Cascades no longer have to fear the establishment of a Foodpark at Parafield that would increase trucks on Elder Smith Road which is already heavily congested. The Foodpark is to be located on the old defence site at Edinburgh Park. Cutting the grass I returned from holiday and resumed walking my dog around the Dry Creek walkway and the lakes and was very pleased to see what a terrific job the contractors (GLG) had done cutting all the long grass and weeds down to the creek banks. It made the whole area such a pleasant place to walk. Steve Astkey Population growth Interesting census data in MLL/Sept. You might like to know that between 2006 and 2016 the largest and fastest population growth in South Australia was in Mawson Lakes - Globe Derby Park up by 8,400 people. Ross Johnson 4

Lions at the Mawson Lakes rail interchange on Daffodil Day: Jessica, Rebecca, Beau, Lauren and Hope (8).

Daffodil Day Thank you Mawson Lakes Living for volunteering on Daffodil Day to help the Mawson Lakes Lions Club raise funds for the Cancer Council SA. At ML we raised more than $600 to support cancer research, public education and prevention campaigns. One in two Australian men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Thank you to everyone who made a donation at the railway station. Mawson Lakes Lions Branch Club Fitness A comprehensive Fitness Liftout in MLL/Sept has provided me with a shortlist of fitness services to try out. It’s becoming apparent that exercise is medicine, not only for the body but for mental health. Exercise alone won’t fix all health issues but it certainly has positive impacts on wellbeing. We are fortunate in Mawson Lakes to have so many options. Thanks for pulling them together in a handy liftout. Jonas Olsen No poo bags Out walking my dog this morning I passed 3 doggie bag dispensers and they were all empty. Then it happened: what was I to do? Pick up the hot, steamy turd with my fingers. No way. So with a sense of shame I left it on the verge. Sorry. Dan and his dog. continued on page 6

continued from page 4 Dumping 'Slum mentality' is how one correspondent described the disregard that some residents have for Mawson Lakes (MLL/August), others talk about abandoned shopping trolleys and illegal dumping. All of this I have seen. I don’t condone dumping but I can pinpoint a couple of contributing factors. One is the cost of taking stuff to the tip. Where is the tip anyway? Another is that people who are constantly on the move buy cheap furnishings and then discard them on the street because they don’t know what else to do with them when they move on, and another is that the council does not provide enough free hard rubbish collection pick-ups. Sherell Belsa

We always read Nigella’s page first so it's amazing to meet her in person. She’s a ML celebrity. We liked her article on Catmanship because we used to have a cat and a big dog and the cat was boss. Aaliah (8) and Breanna (11). The power of advertising in MLL Every morning I drive past Oil Change Express on Salisbury Highway but it was not till I saw their full page ad in MLL/Sept that I was jolted to call them and make an appointment to service my car. Andrew Murray Reckless driving Heavy rain and gusting wind forced me to reduce speed as I travelled home to Mawson Lakes one night, but other drivers were not so concerned for their safety, nor mine. They kept whizzing past at top speed in poor visibility, wipers going full bore, lane hopping and generating waves of water. I just hoped I wouldn’t tangle with these reckless roadsters and I’d get home safely. Others were not so fortunate. As I turned into Mawson Lakes I could see blue flashing ambulance lights in the distance. A few weeks later I read that the stretch between Dry Creek and Wakefield Highway is a black spot. Nothing wrong with the road, but a lot wrong with the people who use it. Dana Messon 6

No junk mail I am writing to MLL as a voice that goes throughout Mawson Lakes. I have a sign on my mailbox that reads ‘No Junk Mail’ and a sticker below that says ‘Mawson Lakes Living accepted’. Your magazine is the only form of non-official Australia Post mail that we in my household find acceptable. Jodie Norman Problem fixed There was a problem with lighting around the main lake so I got onto Steve White, our Council Representative and within days the lights were fixed. Thanks Steve. You are an excellent man to have as a ML resident and our council rep. John Signore, Douglas Drive.

How many women can a man marry? A young boy was attending his first wedding and listening carefully to the pastor. After the service his mother asked him how many women can a man marry. “Sixteen” replied the boy. His mother was amazed the boy gave the answer so quickly and asked, “how do you know that?” The boy replied, “Easy: all you have to do is add it up, like the pastor said 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer.”

Over the coming years Salisbury City Centre will undergo an exciting renewal program transforming the City Centre into a vibrant and modern precinct. The City of Salisbury is proposing to establish a Community Hub in Salisbury City Centre – transforming the area into a precinct for all to experience and enjoy. The vision is to develop an entertainment and service precinct that re-energises the City Centre by creating opportunities for: • Outdoor cinema experiences and live TV broadcasts • Quality family events and live music, performances and exhibitions • School formals, graduations, plays, cultural events and ceremonies • Education, training and meeting spaces • New indoor and outdoor library and children’s activities • New private investment and development • Enhanced delivery of Council services The Community Hub proposal would build and support these opportunities by establishing a new learning and information centre, a public assembly space that holds up to 500 people, new Council administration building and Chambers, a public gallery and greater connection to Civic Square. The estimated cost of the project is $43.8 million. These project costs have been incorporated into our Long Term Financial Plan. Council is also exploring grant opportunities along with proposed sale of council owned properties of $7 million made available due to the new Community Hub.

I am now three years into my four year term as one of your two elected members representing Mawson Lakes and parts of Pooraka and Parafield Gardens at the City of Salisbury. I'm happy to report on the following:

1. Hon Stephen Mulligan announced the Green Trails program will finally connect Mawson Central to Shoalhaven, Cascades and on to The Sanctuary. Council is contributing $1,600,000 and State Government $800,000. The work will install a shared use path, ramp and stairs up the southern side then over Elder Smith Road bridge to: • Improve pedestrian and cycling access from west of the railway via Augustine Street • Connect to Mawson Interchange and Salisbury’s Green Trails. 2. Council has joined the State Government to seek Federal funding for full duplication of Elder Smith Rd from Main North Rd to Salisbury Highway. 3. After winter delays we have Fitness Loop equipment installed on four sites along Dry Creek trail. Regretfully rains left the sites as fenced pits but this had a silver lining as we saw we need drains.

To find out more please visit salisburycitycentre.com.au

4. Thanks to Justin and Kelly for launching Parkrun 8AM each Saturday at the lake front. Please join in a 5Km run or walk. They reminded Council of the poor state of the trail past the old Farm House so a tender to reseal is out. Council has requested State Government share resealing the other bank trail all the way to the Interchange.

Changes in Technology Park There are many aerospace, defence, and global security industries in Technology Park in Mawson Lakes. One of these, until recently, was Lockheed Martin on Third Ave. This site is now for sale. Steve White provides the background to this story.

reports indicate that BAE Systems was selected as the preferred tenderer, teamed with Daronmont and Raytheon who also have sites in Technology Park. Lockheed Martin was not included and this seems to be the reason behind Lockheed's closure of this site.

In Defence contracting, there are always ebbs and flows in business. Contracts are won and lost and this determines the location and scale of businesses.

However, Lockheed will continue in Adelaide. It had a big win about a year ago after being selected to provide the combat system for the French designed submarines to be built at Port Adelaide. Lockheed also has sites in Edinburgh Parks Technology Precinct where submarine work may soon be undertaken so it will continue at a different site and the Mawson Lakes site will go.

Since the early 1970s Australia has developed a world leading High Frequency Radar – called Jindalee – to detect aircraft more than 3,000km away approaching Australia. The original developmental site, based outside Alice Springs, was run by BAE Systems, and the operational sites at Laverton in WA and Longreach in Queensland were run by Lockheed Martin. Support personnel was based at Lockheeds's Technology Park site. The whole network was controlled from RAAF Edinburgh. A few years ago RAAF invited tenders for an upgrade to all three sites and recent media

8

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 124 - October 2017

BAE Systems left its two Second Avenue sites a few years ago when it lost some contracts. Codan and Ellex have stepped into these sites. BAE Systems maintains its current submarine periscope facility on Signal Ct in Technology Park. Saab at the end of Third Ave has recently announced plans to build a $40 million wing to its existing complex to house the new Defence Institute that will train the workforce to deliver future defence industry projects (See MLL/June).

You may know how effectively Neurofeedback therapy gently and quickly helps make change for depression, anxiety, post trauma stress, ASD, attention deficit, behaviour and learning. You may also know that we encourage a holistic approach to change, particularly that the brain needs to be well fed, both emotionally and physically. GUT IMBALANCE = POOR BEHAVIOUR At the latest LENS Conference in Sebastopol, California, I was encouraged in our approach by two presenters highlighting how imbalances in the gut can lead to formation of faulty neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to further faulty brain functioning and behaviour problems. They presented nutritional solutions combined with LENS for quite specific behaviour problems: • A child who often has meltdowns, is aggressive and destructive can attack and be destructive for a short period and is then is remorseful, may have an imbalance of zinc and copper, and also have elevated pyrroles. • A stubborn, rebellious, controlling, perfectionist and high achieving child may have undermethylation. WHAT TO DO? Make an appointment with us for a Brain Map. Ask your GP to have your child’s levels checked. Together you can expect rapid change. Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

DIABETES AND YOUR FEET

Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood. These fluctuating blood sugar levels can have serious consequences for feet, in particular to blood flow and sensation. Feet require a good blood supply to keep the muscles, bones, nerves and skin healthy and to heal the foot should damage occur. Poor circulation is a serious risk to foot health. Feet also require good feedback from the nerves to identify potential threats such as a stone in your shoe, temperature extremes and to reduce the risk of falls. Reduced feeling in your feet puts them in danger.

People Profile: For the love of horses! For as long as she can remember, Ainslie Gilles-Patel shared a special – almost spiritual connection with horses. For her, horses symbolised strength, kindness and trust. Therefore, it came as no surprise to anyone when Ainslie decided to become an equine artist and photographer. The Mawson Lakes based photographer tries to showcase the beauty of horses through her work. “For Christmas, when I was about 14, my parents got me a point and shoot camera. My horse who lived on my aunt’s farm was my first subject. I would experiment by taking different pictures from various angles.

Initially, my pictures were horrible, but I learnt from my mistakes, and soon started taking better pictures,” said Ainslie. As a teenager, Ainslie knew that she was born to be an equine artist/photographer. In 2001, she bought her first SLR camera with a telephoto lens. This enabled her to polish her technical skills and take her photography to the next level. “I started focusing on getting the lighting and angles correct,” she says. Today, Ainslie is a well-known photographer who photographs horse shows across Adelaide. “A knowledge of different horse breeds is imperative as it enables me to employ the right techniques for each breed. To photograph the Arabian horse – given their fine bone and natural beauty – I could sit really low and get an angle that would make for a good picture. If I tried the same technique with a smaller horse, the results could be terrible,” says Ainslie who uses a Canon 80D.

“Though I plan on venturing into people portraiture, I will never give up photographing horses. They fuel my creativity.” Gayatri Nair

Homemaker Guide WHAT'S HOT Old meets new in the year ahead as traditional furniture is reimagined with a modern edge. New materials, colours, and textures can revamp even the most dated of styles. Smartphone to Smarthome is the modern era of home design. To help you keep up with the new home trends Mawson Lakes Living has put together a guide that makes it easy to shop locally. Here are some trends for the year ahead and the tradies who can help you achieve them. RUGS AS ART Area rugs will be the go-to trend for homeowners looking to make a rapid impact. A mix of size, colour, style and texture creates endless possibilities to complement an existing room or make a complete transformation. From floors to walls, rugs become art with rooms being built around them as opposed to on top of them. INNOVATIVE LIGHTING Experts are shining a spotlight on lighting as a showstopper for commercial and residential spaces. It’s not just fresh interpretations of shapes, but also the incorporation of interesting technology from LED and beyond that makes this trend new and innovative.

URBAN RETREAT In an age where homes are smaller and lives are busier, the city retreat becomes more important than ever. As an extension of the living area, creating an outdoor urban oasis will be the perfect addition to any home. FEMININE LINES Strong and beautiful, the new feminine aesthetic goes beyond pretty. This trend sees a juxtaposition of bold architectural details and lines, mixed with soft colours and feminine shapes. KITCHENS AND BATHS Stylish kitchens and bathrooms will never go out of style. Year after year these rooms act as a perfect “splurge” for homeowners looking to renovate. With the introduction of wood panelling and technology, it’s a fusion of classic design with modern technology. MATERIAL MATTERS Mixed materials for doors, ceilings, and surface areas will be adorned with interesting materials, tiles and patterns to create an eye-catching statements. Designers will play with strategically placed tiles mixing into other patterns to create an unconventional focal point.

People Profile: Changing the world one haircut at a time Hurtle Parade is a nondescript street in Mawson Lakes, but one sign that stands out is Longko Salon. The stylish salon is owned by Marcela Lastra who is a Mawson Lakes resident and the first Australian Ambassador of Hair Aid, an organisation that offers free hair cuts to those from the marginalised sections of society. As an ambassador, Marcela along with other hair stylists regularly visits Manila where she teaches a five-day hair cutting course to those rescued from homelessness, addiction and child prostitution.

“We got in touch with local associations, and through them identified those most in need for such a program that will help make them employable. Our program teaches the attendees some basic hair cutting lessons; these include cutting a straight hair, layering, styling, men’s hair style techniques, among others,” explained Marcela. Many of the attendees are either victims of drug addiction, poverty and violence. Some have been forced to prostitute their children for survival. Those attending the program are given a certificate at the end of the course. “Many have gone on to do further training, others have started taking hair cutting appointments in their houses,” she added.

“If we can save even one life from being pushed into trafficking or prostitution, we would consider ourselves to have succeeded." Marcela with her students in Manila, Phillipines

SPOT 7 DIFFERENCES

Hand Therapy

with Michael Janetzki, co-director What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? A common injury is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). This generally (but not always) occurs when the hand and arm is over used. Swelling or inflammation at the wrist, around the nerve that supplies the thumb, index and middle fingers, causes pressure on this nerve, making it unhealthy over time. Often considered to be a serious problem, feared by both office and labour workers alike, CTS is actually quite a manageable problem if detected and treated early.

Solution on page 30

Symptoms include wrist pain, weakness or poor coordination during hand use, and often tingling or numbness in the fingers over night. It can be a real nuisance if allowed to set in. The good news is that a simple exercise and splinting plan can help resolve the problem if treated early, but even in severe cases there are pathways to resolve this problem. Your Hand Therapist has the skills and knowledge to assess the problem, and also guide you R L I M through the appropriate management process. B P E P T H

It’s time to choose our future! The last State Budget included a new $40m Fund My Neighbourhood program, which allows any South Australian to nominate a project to improve their community. I recently wrote in this magazine about the program and encouraged you to submit your ideas.

Halloween in Mawson Lakes Halloween is on Tuesday 31 October and Mawson Lakes Living is looking forward to opening its door to the clever and creative kids of Mawson Lakes again this year.

I like to get into the swing of it all myself and dress as the 'Purple Witch' with a friendly purple dog and lots of goodies. My place will be festooned with cobwebs, pumpkins, bats and broomsticks. Come and visit and take home a fun gift courtesy of Mawson Lakes Living. Marie from MV Cakes will have spooky cupcakes available for sale so bring some loose change. See ad below. And kids, here's a tip. Not everyone supports Halloween so stick to houses with a Halloween signature so you know you will be welcome. Linda and Nigella

Many residents of Mawson Lakes did, and after spending months collecting those and over 2000 other suggestions from across the State, it is now time to choose which projects will be funded. The best part of this program is that residents of Mawson Lakes not only had the chance to nominate ideas, but we will also decide which of our local projects receive funding. Our area has had so many excellent projects suggested but unfortunately not all can be chosen. The only way to make sure that your opinion about which should be a higher priority is heard is to visit fundmyneighbourhood.sa.gov.au and register to vote. Mawson Lakes is already a great place to live, work and raise a family. The Fund My Neighbourhood program gives us a chance to make it even better.

Recipe: Carrot Payasam for the soul Food for my mother in law, Radha, has always been more than just the mere culmination of vegetables and spices, it is the language of the soul. Her favourite getaway is the kitchen where she is constantly experimenting with food. The carrot payasam (from the Sanskrit word ‘payasa’ meaning milk) is one of her favourite recipes. Gayatri Nair Preparation time: 30 – 45 minutes. Serves: 6 people INGREDIENTS: 1kg carrots, washed and peeled. 1 teaspoon crushed or 1.5 litres of milk powdered cardamom seeds 1 can condensed milk 4 tablespoons butter

1

50 gms cashew nuts and raisins for garnishing, fried in 1 teaspoon of butter

2

3

METHOD: Take around 750 gms of the carrots and cut them into chunks. Pressure cook these in 1 cup of milk. After the mixture has cooled down, pour the contents into a blender and blend them into a puree. Grate the rest of the carrots (225 gms). Heat butter in a pan and sauté the grated carrots for about 10 minutes (picture 1). Add the remaining milk, and cook the grated carrots till the milk starts to boil. To this mixture add the carrot puree (picture 2). Remember to keep stirring through all the steps. Add the condensed milk and cardamom powder. Add sugar if needed. Once the mixture starts to boil, turn the flame to medium and keep stirring till the mixture thickens slightly. Add the fried cashews and raisins (picture 3) for garnish and serve. Serve hot and enjoy!

Going back to School

by Nigella

I grew up in schools. Mummy used to be a teacher and she drove the school bus and I had my own seat on the bus. The children would pile on and play with me all the way home and they even invited me to their birthday parties. My daddy, Ben, was a rowing coach so I got to go training in rowing boats and running for fitness. That’s why I grew up fit and strong with good balance. The kids would play in the water with me so I'm a good swimmer too. They would run round and round the school grounds tumbling and chasing me, but I was too fast for them, they never could grab my ball.

go anywhere near the Grade 2 classroom. So, last month when I was invited back to Grade 2 at Mawson Lakes School to talk about Dog Care I was so excited. Mummy and I demonstrated how to keep a dog healthy and happy and how to approach and talk to dogs. They have some chickens there too!

At Mawson Lakes School I got lots of treats from the boys and girls. You see, Mummy gave each child a litttle doggie biscuit and each one One day I got into came up to me big trouble from the and introduced Principal. The kids in themselves in the Grade 2 had a chicken correct way to Nigella goes back to school pen and I could smell the chickens so I approach a dog, wandered over, just wanting to look at the fluffy and gave me the biscuit. In return I gave each one things. The teacher saw me and came running a little kiss on the hand to say thank you. I love over waving her arms and shooing me away. She going to school and I wish I was in Grade 2 so I reported me to the Principal and I had to go up could play with all the nice children . . . and smell to the office. From then on I was not allowed to the chickens.

Movie review: American Made

Tom Cruise is as handsome and charming as ever in this movie which is set in the late 1970s. Despite the fact that Cruise is 55, playing a man in his thirties, he delivers a ceaselessly entertaining, romp through the murky world of criminality and corruption.

WE KNOW GOOD PRINTING.

The film is based on the real life of Barry Seal, an American airline pilot bored with his humdrum job. His attempts to add excitement lead him down an increasingly politically tense and dangerous rabbit hole – starting when the CIA hires him to take reconnaissance photographs of Soviet-backed insurgents in South America. Before long he’s drug smuggling and having the time of his life flying planes through the South American jungle, and making so much money he doesn’t know what to do with it. In this corrupt world, everybody sees everybody else as currency. Money trumps morals. "Is this legal?" a naive Seal asked the CIA guy. "If you’re doing it for the good guys it is," responds the CIA. There’s action, humour and a beautiful wife something for everyone in this biographical semi-serious crime drama. Ed
