And while technology is driving innovation in Mawson Lakes, the Arts are not being neglected. This month I introduce you to musician Jonathan Heath who has just opened a guitar school in Mawson Lakes. His picture is on the cover and if you’re lucky you may see him lakeside strumming his guitar or playing in a local cafe.

Linda Vining

When I was there around 8am to buy my daffs, I witnessed commuters squeezing uncomfortably into carriages that were over-full. It made me think that if the government wants people to use public transport they need to provide more carriages in peak hour. What do you think? Drop me a line with your comments about public transport in Mawson Lakes.

Editor: Linda Vining

A cross section of people are profiled in this issue, one drawn from our innovative industries who employ some of the smartest minds in South Australia... and another, a clever 6 year old who won the Salisbury Writers Prize. Their stories are inside.

Attracting rats Residents are throwing household food into the parklands thinking it is food for birds. Not only is it unhealthy for birds, it attracts rats, snakes and foxes. Yes, we have foxes in Mawson Lakes. - Emma Oreskin The goodness of people I escaped a violent relationship and came to live in Mawson Lakes. It's taken me years to get over it but whenever I feel down I take a walk in Mawson Lakes and feel safe and calm. Whenever I feel lonely I pick up my copy of MLL, read the nice stories and look at the happy faces and people doing good. This helps me a lot. - Sonia Interactivity 14 frogs in the wetlands, a full-page cross word puzzle and a search for a copy of Michael Skliarenko’s copy of the magazine. What a happy interactive issue in September. Perfect for sitting in the sun with a cup of coffee. - Roger Ryder I spy something suss The eyes and the ears of the public help fight crime so if you have information or observe something out of place, such as people movements, cars, smells - call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Crime Stoppers is not Police; it is an independent information gathering organisation run by volunteers who work with police. Anonymity is assured. - Adam Thomson, CEO Crime Stoppers speaking at the Neighbourhood Watch meeting in August. The next meeting of Neighbourhood Watch will be on 21 November at 6pm in the Mawson Centre. Guest Speaker will be the coordinator of SAPOL Northern District Operations talking about police operations in Mawson Lakes. Protect your vehicle Vehicle crime is increasing in Mawson Lakes so lock your car, remove all items and install security screws on your number plates. Stolen number plates are used for petrol theft, robberies, house break-ins, and avoiding speeding fines. - Senior Constable Kylie Fielder, Crime Prevention SAPOL 4

The power of public opinion Mawson Lakes Living is a powerful influencer. Over many years I have seen in these pages the publication of problems that face our suburb, such as the need for parking restrictions, greater security, better transport services, dirty streets, hoon driving and calls for a post office. Authorities listen to public opinion and we are fortunate to have a strong voice in Mawson Lakes that can bring about change. The magazine goes far and wide and I have seen it on the desks of local, state and federal office holders. - Marco Nilsworthy

Hoon driving I want to follow up with the comments made by Rainer Glowacki in MLL/August. I also live on Mawson Lakes Boulevard and have contacted local council and police regarding hoon driving to no avail. As a result of high speed through a bend after a roundabout, the driver of a high performance vehicle lost control and crashed into our parked car pushing it onto the nature strip and footpath some 10 metres or so – causing such damage to our vehicle that it had to be towed away. It was fortunate that no one was walking on the footpath nor sitting in the car otherwise someone could have been killed. Now it wakes me with a jolt every time I hear the HOONS driving past, hoping they won’t crash – as next time we may not be so lucky. What does it take for action to be taken by the authorities – loss of a life? - Maria Rogers Clever jokes The last page of MLL is my favourite because the joke always leaves me with a smile. A well-crafted joke occurs when the punchline is delivered in just a few words in the very last line, as happened in MLL/Aug, with just 3 words. - Wayne Tiernan

New Business: Guitar School Learning to play the guitar The guitar is a versatile instrument, popular around the world; equally comfortable around a campfire and splendid in a concert performance. If you’re lucky you may hear musician Jonathan Heath playing his guitar around the lake on a sunny afternoon. Jonathan opened the G4 Guitar Schools in Mawson Lakes a few months ago and he is training children from 4 years to adults in his studio on Park Way. Guitar Schools offers a 5-week introductory course that teaches good habits and essential skills such as picking, reading music, rhythm and theory. A structured step-by-step 4G program caters for seniors as well as juniors. "We work with many adults who have dabbled with a guitar in the past, or haven’t had an opportunity to learn, and they become very dedicated students. One of our students is 65 and until recently

had never played the guitar, but he practices for half an hour every day and he is working his way successfully through a progression checklist," said Jonathan. Friendships are made through music and we have individual and small group sessions and plan to present impromptu concerts in local venues, such as cafes. Jonathan started learning the guitar when he was 6 years old and has not put it down. He has a university degree in music and another in teaching and he says he loves combining the two "to see the joy in learning" Ed

New Business Going Solar Business man Damien lives with his family in a technology based home, with 2 spas and a small commercial-sized aircon unit, yet he does not pay anything for electricity. Instead he earns $300 to $500 every quarter from the solar panels on his roof. How? And without battery storage? Damien is the Sales Manager at Project Solar, a new business in Mawson Lakes. His aim is to show everyone in Mawson Lakes how to reduce power costs by installing solar panels. "There are lots of options for solar power and lots of products on the market but not a lot of education," he said.

The Lantern Festival by Nigella Whenever we go to a really busy place - for example a market or a festival - mummy pops me into a backpack to keep me safe from the hustle and bustle of moving feet. Because I’m little and weigh less than 7kg I’m easy to carry and I’m out of the way, especially if it’s dark. My head sticks out and I can see and hear everything. This is what I saw last month in Hahndorf. It was the Night Lantern Festival - a dazzle of decorated lanterns handmade from wire, sticks and paper, all lit by candles or little lights. Hundreds of lanterns formed a twilight procession through the streets of Hahndorf and ended in a park where they were anchored in a glowing display. Some of the big decorated paper sculptures, that were carried on high poles, represented

16

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 148, October 2019

flying fish, sailing boats, reindeers and rockets. Others were small and colourful, many made by children in lantern workshops. It was cold, cold, cold on a winter’s night in the Hills, but I was cosy in my warm jacket and I noticed the other dogs were wearing their jackets too. Nice show. To keep warm we sat on a haybale next to a fire pit eating German pizza (flammkuchen) and listening to the town's band. There were lots of strange lights, noises and sounds but I felt safe in my backpack. The Lantern Festival is an artful annual community event and dogs are welcome, so get along next year... backpack or not.
