DIABLO HOUSE Terry & Terry Architecture Terry & Terry Architecture present Diablo House, situated on a ridge providing stunning views of Mount Diablo and the adjacent hills and valleys.

The project involved adding a residential wing to an existing single-story house. The new two-story volume is connected to the original house at an acute angle, which opens the intersecting space by engaging it with the outdoor landscape and distant views. The new volume houses a groundlevel kitchen, dining, and media areas. Above, a new primary bedroom suite hovers out past the hillside, capturing views of the surrounding hills. The open plan layout allows the spaces to flow seamlessly. The core of the house is connected to the outdoor living spaces by floor-to-ceiling glass walls that curve around the main deck, allowing for views from and through the main living areas towards the open landscape. Deep overhangs frame the view and protect the interiors from the intense summer sun. The new kitchen and dining areas spill onto the large deck, which then becomes an extension of the living space and connects the addition with the adjacent wing. Situated below the deck and sloping downhill, a separate guest suite is nestled into the hillside, affording breathtaking views, while maintaining privacy from the main house.

" Deep overhangs frame the view and protect the interiors from the intense summer sun."

This efficient and fully equipped unit has both a separate entry and a connection to the main house, allowing extended family or elderly parents to live on site while retaining as much independence as they like.

The original wing is now fully dedicated to bedroom suites. A new garage structure is folded into the Northern end of the hillside, transitioning the grade from the main house elevation to the orchard below. 5

EDITOR'S CHOICE The design of the building incorporates many passive and active sustainable design elements. The South and North facades are widely open to allow for passive solar heating in the winter and natural daylight year-round, while deep overhangs provide shade in the summer. Highly efficient spray foam insulation in the roof and wall systems offset heat gain in the summer and retains heat in winter. The roof orientation allows the project to integrate generous photovoltaic and hydronic solar panel arrays. Along with a rainwater irrigation system tied into the native landscape, 6

this allows for the house to provide nearly all its energy and water needs. A post-occupancy survey has concluded that the inhabitants rarely use their heating and cooling equipment. The winter temperatures remain comfortable with minimal added heat, and they can passively ventilate the house in the summer months to mostly avoid using their air conditioning system despite the often scorching temperatures. Photovoltaic panels can produce enough electricity for home usage and all electric vehicles. terryandterryarchitecture.com

PART O, A-OK Time’s up. The end of the one-year transition period, which allowed works to be built to previous regulations if started within 12 months of submitting a building notice before 15 June 2022, is nigh. So, if you haven't already, it's time to get your compliance in order. Designed to tackle overheating, the Building Regulations Approved Document Part O became the first of its kind when it was introduced in the summer. It seeks to ensure that the design and construction of new residential buildings limit unwanted solar gain in summer and provide adequate means to remove heat from the indoor environment. By using a tinted coating on the exterior of the glass to reflect heat away from the interior, solar glass creates ambient indoor temperatures. It’s even possible to fit solar glass that reflects twice as much heat as standard glass: TuffX has achieved this through a unique new coating specifically developed for a new rooflight in its popular Infinity Framed RoofLight range. And unlike most solar glass it’s untinted, so achieves maximum light transmission too.

“As a leading supplier of rooflights, we’ve always known no one wants an uncomfortable, unusable space for any part of the year, no matter how light and bright and welcoming it might look,” said TuffX’s Commercial Director Paul Higgins. And it's not just about overheating in summer. “Come winter, our new rooflight’s untinted glass lets in maximum light, but it also has a U-value of 1.0 – exceeding current Building Regulation requirements and making it the UK’s most energy efficient rooflight all year round. Because the industry knows it can expect more changes aimed at improving the energy efficiency of buildings soon, with the Government’s Future Homes and Building Standards due to come into force in 2025, just two short years away.

“At TuffX we’re always looking ahead to the future,” said Paul. “And we’re actively putting futureproofing homes front and centre of our product offerings.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk

BEAUTIFULLY TOUGH

Beauty may be skin deep, but it’s the layers below the surface that make toughened laminated glass outstandingly strong, making it a go-to material for architects, shopfitters, partitioners and balustrade designers, as Susan Sinden, Commercial Manager for ESG Group Ltd, explains. Toughened laminated glass is created by laminating together two or more panes of toughed glass with advanced PVB interlayers, creating a highly versatile building material, both beautiful, and remarkably robust. These interlayers can also be used to introduce safety, sound attenuation, high security, colour, and privacy, so it’s small wonder that toughened laminated glass is used in many elements in modern construction. Toughened glass, which is toughened by passing through a highly advanced furnace, is four times tougher than ordinary annealed glass, and is already a far safer product that annealed glass, which, when damaged, will break into large shards which can inflict injury on anyone in close proximity. The debris caused from breakages is, in itself, fairly hazardous. Toughened glass, on the other hand, shatters rather than breaks, fragmenting into much smaller particles which represent much less risk of injury to anyone near the pane. Toughened glass has therefore become a firm favourite for any area which is required to withstand high footfalls, or general wear and tear.

Not only is it almost unrivalled as a product used to create shop fronts in retail settings, but it has also become a firm favourite in corporate offices, transport termini, and increasingly, in architect designed domestic dwellings. Its many uses within these settings are almost as diverse. Glass is increasingly used in creating partitions in larger spaces as it facilitates the clever zoning of internal areas without losing light, natural or artificial. On a smaller scale, toughened laminated glass such as ESG Tufflam is frequently used to create balustrades, both inside and out; while modern bonding techniques allow it to be joined almost seamlessly to create large scale uninterrupted expanses of glass which allow architects to realise their most ambitious visions. These wide vistas are usually created using two panes of glass laminated together, their relatively light weight allowing us to create wider and taller panes than in previous generations, helping to push the architectural envelope. Thanks to advances in interlayer and processing technology, glass, which has been part of our built environment for many centuries, is still very much a product for the future. www.esg.glass

FEAR OF FLOODS NOW IMPACTING NEW HOME PURCHASES

Nine in ten Brits are so concerned by the increased possibility of flooding that it’s now affecting their purchasing decisions when buying a new home. The acceleration of global warming and climate change has led to more unpredictable and extreme weather patterns meaning that heavy rainfall events and flooding is expected to become more common. The research, conducted by plumbing and drainage manufacturer Wavin revealed this fear of flooding is now evident amongst those in the housing market with 71% deeming flood defences, including sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), as important factors when purchasing a house. A 2022 Bank of England report* only contributed to this growing fear with bankers reporting that the cost of flood risk coverage is set to skyrocket indefinitely over the next 30 years if urgent action isn’t taken on climate change. Another recent report suggested that by 2050, one in six properties in England will be hit by flooding. The alarming assessment by researchers covers 4.8 million properties sold between 2006 and 2022, with the regions most vulnerable to flooding including East Anglia, North West, and Yorkshire. With this adding to the homebuyers’ fears, Wavin revealed that insurance premiums were considered important to 99% of those surveyed. Fortunately, a joint initiative between the Government and insurers is working to make the flood cover aspect of household insurance policies more affordable. With hundreds of thousands of homes across the UK potentially becoming harder to insure because they’re at high risk of flooding, Flood Re will provide much needed support by lowering premiums for at-risk households. With flooding becoming a very real fear for buyers, potential homeowners are now eager to find out 12

what developers are doing to protect their new homes. An overwhelming 98% of those surveyed by Wavin agreed that they would like to know the detail of any flood prevention measures in place before buying a home. Wavin has revealed that flood defences such as sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are among the initiatives that homebuyers are willing to pay more for when selecting a new home. Unfortunately, many potential buyers are unaware of what SuDS actually are, which calls for urgent action to raise awareness. Shockingly, 72% of respondents admitted to never having heard of SuDS and according to Wavin the lack of awareness surrounding this crucial flood prevention measure is deeply concerning. Martin Lambley, Product Manager for Urban Climate Resilience Northwest Europe, UK, and Ireland at Wavin, said: “Developers and housebuilders who gloss over the benefits of SuDS are selling themselves short, flood resilience is now becoming a major factor when purchasing a home, as the research shows. “Schedule 3 legislation of the Flood and Water Management Act (2010) that will make sustainable drainage mandatory on new developments will mean that developers will need to become fluent in SuDS, and the findings of this research clearly demonstrate that the housebuilding industry should see it as an opportunity rather than an obligation.” With new builds set to be protected by SuDS it’s no surprise that 2022 saw an unprecedented surge in the popularity of new build houses, with a staggering 84% of potential buyers considering homes within new developments. For more information and to download Wavin’s report, visit: https://blog.wavin.com/en-gb/value-ofsustainable-drainage-systems-suds-to-new-homebuyers

We shape them by hand, layer by layer, enhanced by texture and finish until they take on their own unique form and because of this no two pots are ever quite the same” Torc use various products to reduce their carbon footprint such as recycled glass and bi products of the steel and power industries – reusing waste! The addition of these materials increases the overall strength of the product, decreases permeability and therefore water requirement. www.torcpots.com 16

11 LUXURY KITCHEN TRENDS FOR 2024 And why Porcelain is predicted to be the material of choice for the kitchens of 2024 EARTHY COLOURS, GOLD ACCENTS AND TRANSPARENT STORAGE SOLUTIONS WILL ALL BE ON-TREND FOR THE LUXURY KITCHENS OF 2024 As many homeowners start to plan updates to their existing kitchen or begin researching new designs for a renovation, knowing what trends are predicted for 2024 can help inspire materials, styles, products and colours to give the space the ‘wow’ factor. The overall theme for 2024 sees the kitchen becoming even more of a living space within the home, as well as opting for bold design choices. Global leader in the design and production of large sized surfaces, Laminam’s R&D Director, Claudio Corniola has predicted 11 key luxury kitchen trends for 2024 that are set to take kitchens, and in particular, surfaces to the next level.

1. PORCELAIN WORKTOPS Previously, kitchen worktops, splashbacks and furniture cladding have been all about granite, quartz and marble. But new innovations and 26

advances in sustainability have meant that slabs made with porcelain are richer and more design-led, making it the material of choice for the kitchens of 2024. A new market report has predicted that porcelain worktop sales will see a massive boost over the next several years, with a predicted sales increase of 46%*. Available in a huge choice an array of colours, textures, sizes, finishes and patterns, porcelain can emulate the look of these materials, but without the maintenance and price tag. The benefits of porcelain include it being non-porous, waterproof, hygienic, durable, hardwearing, UV, stain and scratch resistant as well as being easy to clean. With Laminam’s superior natural surfaces, homeowners can bring an authentic Italian look and feel into their kitchens with peace of mind that they are sustainable, and will last for years to come.

2. ALL BLACK KITCHENS Dark kitchens look to be even more dramatic for 2024. Black worksurfaces and splashbacks will be paired with other black elements, such as stained or painted cabinetry or lighting for a wow-factor

is to use design elements to bring the outside in, whether that be through the addition of plants and fresh herbs on display via a vertical garden, an earthy colour palette or using natural materials.

and opulent result. This statement look will come in many forms, including porcelain surfaces, which are easy to clean and care for and won’t lose their lustrous sheen.

3. SUSTAINABLE LIVING Homeowners are making more sustainable choices when it comes to the products they bring into their homes, and this goes for the whole production process too. Brands and manufacturers who embrace an environmentally friendly way of production, packaging and delivery will be preferred. Materials of choice will be natural and safe to recycle at the end of their life, and kitchens will also see a rise in the use of recycled, upcycled and hand-crafted pieces. When it comes to sustainable surface choices, porcelain is incredibly eco-friendly, and is a material with one of the lowest carbon footprints. Laminam surfaces contain up to 60% recycled materials, while 100% of the water used is fed back into its production and 95% of its raw waste is recovered. With almost 16.2 million #sustainable Instagram posts, this is a key consideration for many across all sectors, including interiors and kitchen design.

"The overall theme for 2024 sees the kitchen becoming even more of a living space within the home, as well as opting for bold design choices."

4. A WELLBEING SPACE Much like bathrooms, kitchens are set to become spaces for self-care and well-being. With the rise of healthy home cooking, spa-inspired products and biophilic design, this key trend will transform the kitchen into a place of tranquillity while cooking, dining and entertaining. One way to achieve this

5. EXPOSED SHELVING AND FREESTANDING STORAGE Storage for the kitchens of 2024 will be less formal and fitted and more casual and relaxed, with open, transparent, or freestanding shelving to display everyday items and treasured pieces. Over the past 12 months (as of Sept, 2023), “Shelving Unit” has become a breakout search topic, as has “Pantry” over the past 90 days, according to Google Trends data. To avoid a cluttered look in a multi-functional kitchen, easy storage is more imperative than ever, and could be just a simple single open ‘floating’ shelf, shelves incorporated into an island, or a large, bespoke dresser with premium surfacing to elevate it further.

Worktops” continue to soar, with it being a breakout topic over the past seven days, according to Google Trends. For 2024, designers will be mixing marblelook surfaces with other textures and colours such as wood, cement, steel or glass for a more visually impactful result. Choosing a marble effect surface such as porcelain is easier to care for and maintain than real marble, and so will be a popular choice in 2024 to contrast alongside other materials.

6. WARM METALLIC ACCENTS For 2024, the metallics of the moment will be warm tones such as gold, copper and brass. According to Google Trends data, “Copper” has become a breakout search topic over the past 12 months. Whether incorporated within the tones of a worktop’s veining, via sinks and taps, lighting, cabinet handles or accessories, these warm accents will bring luxe to even the plainest of kitchen designs.

7. MIXING MARBLE-LOOK WITH OTHER STYLES Marble and marble-look surfaces and décor have reigned supreme in kitchens over the last few years and are now a timeless classic. Searches for “Marble 28

8. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL ISLANDS From extending out into a dining table to bespoke chopping areas and definitive breakfast bar zones, kitchen islands will be more versatile than ever in 2024, and emulate the gastronomical experience found in a luxury restaurant at home. The working triangle is no longer a necessity in kitchen design, and kitchen islands can efficiently incorporate areas for preparation, cooking, washing up and dining. With almost 1.3 million #kitchenisland posts on Instagram, this key kitchen trend is here to stay.

9. EARTHY COLOURS

Laminam I Naturali Series – Invisible White

Earthy hues including anthracite, deep browns and nature inspired greens are set to be on-trend in 2024, as we move away from lighter kitchens in favour of rich, dark designs with plenty of visual depth. This trend will extend to all elements of the kitchen, including surfaces, cabinetry, wall colours and flooring.

10. CHUNKY SURFACES Deliberately thick surfaces are perfect for creating bold impact on a central island or kitchen worktop. With the usual thickness for a countertop being 12mm, 2024 will see more instances of a 20mm thickness being used; particularly striking when used on a waterfall island.

11. SOFT FINISHES 2024 will see a move towards matt or soft finishes, rather than shiny or gloss. State of the art

technology in the surfacing industry has meant that this is easily achieved for any kitchen surfaces and alleviates any issues of fingerprint marks on a wellused worktop in an open-plan kitchen. www.laminam.com/gbr/en 29

COMMITMENT TO MEETING LOW-CARBON ALUMINIUM DEMANDS By Wojciech Brożyna - MD Aluprof UK

30

What exactly is ‘Sustainability’? Possibly the most quoted explanation comes from the United Nations ‘Brundtland Report’ produced in 1987 which states that the definition of sustainability is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. To better understand how we can bring about sustainability, a popular view of sustainable development can be referred to as the ‘Three Pillars of Sustainability’. Here, Sustainability rests on the three pillars of, Environmental, Social and Economic development, that all work together to achieve the sustainability goal. Whilst this view of sustainability is a global one, one that countries are encouraged to follow and develop for the future of our planet, how are we translating sustainability into construction today and in particular aluminium facades?

its discovery continues to push the boundaries of innovation today.

Aluminium, since its commercial debut in the 1880s, has shaped our world in so many ways, in fact, if the metal did not exist, much of what we take for granted today, would never have been made possible. Aluminium is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, making up 8% of the total, with the majority of this ore, bauxite, which lies very close to the surface. Once dubbed ‘the wonder metal’ for its light weight and high strength,

So where is the downside? Like all metals, aluminium carries high embodied energy, described today as embodied carbon. This has been historically quoted as high as 20 tonnes of carbon for every tonne of aluminium produced when energy from fossil fuels is used to produce new prime aluminium from bauxite. So aluminium smelters have traditionally been located next to renewable energy resources, such as hydro power

Aluminium has always been viewed in simple terms as ‘sustainable’ as it is infinitely recyclable with no loss of characteristics. Using just 5% of the original energy to produce aluminium, recycling is well established, so much so, 75% off all aluminium ever produced is still in active use today. With ‘clean’ scrap value almost that of new prime aluminium, the industry cannot get hold of enough scrap aluminium to meet the current demand for recycled content. With an estimated total discovered and undiscovered bauxite resources across the globe to be in the region of 55 billion to 75 billion tonnes we will not run out of new, prime aluminium anytime soon.

DOORS, WINDOWS & FITTINGS

for decades in order to use cheap renewable energy sources. Now the industry is turning to hydrogen power to further reduce embodied carbon. Aluprof are proud to be leading this low-carbon revolution, using a greater mix of recycled content to prime in aluminium can reduce embodied carbon to a very low parameter of just 2.79 tCO2e (Tonnes of CO2 equivalent) per tonne of aluminium. These low-carbon billets are manufactured at the group’s low-carbon Kęty line at the factory in the southern Polish town of Kęty. These low levels of emissions have been achieved thanks to the use of the company’s cutting-edge plant for the manufacturing process and utilising a high content of secondary raw materials in the form of recycled aluminium scrap at an average level of 65%. Whilst to some this may seem to still be a high carbon price to pay, consider the carbon savings using a product containing aluminium during its long life span, compared to alternative materials which can create more carbon in use during their lifetime. Architects understandably want to specify lowcarbon aluminium for future projects but with global aluminium recycling running at about 33% of all aluminium output, to source 65% scrap for specific projects will often mean extended lead times should be catered for. The Aluprof UK field team are always on hand to advise specifiers on what can be achieved for any given project and how further carbon savings can be achieved through the supply chain. Not being complacent at this level of carbon content, Aluprof are committed to further reducing carbon emissions in production that will occur over the coming years using new and emerging technologies. But, we need also to consider aluminium’s considerable benefits in use, particularly in facades. Whilst we know of aluminium’s light weight and its ability to be easily shaped through various processes, its long life in use is what impresses specifiers and clients alike. One of the oldest first uses of aluminium in fenestration is the well documented Bodleian Library in Oxford. Aluminium windows from James Gibbons were installed in the ‘New University Library’ at Oxford University 85 years ago, further highlighting aluminium’s extraordinarily long service life. The building, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1937 and 1939, was a much needed addition to the Bodleian Library whose collections are used by scholars from around the world. The windows were inspected and chemically cleaned ten years ago and they are expected to continue performing well into the current century. One of the latest projects to be completed with an aluminium facade is the ground breaking Forge in London. The Forge is the first commercial building constructed and operated in line with the UK’s Green Building Council net zero definition and energy reduction targets. It comprises two new

Bodleian Library

office buildings and a public courtyard. Located on Sumner Street, The Forge is a Landsec office development located just behind Tate Modern in London and is one of the most innovative projects in London, pioneering several new construction methods fit for the decades ahead. Breaking new ground, the project is the world’s first large-scale office scheme to be built using a standardised “kit of parts”, in an approach known as ‘platform design for manufacture and assembly’ (P-DfMA), which applies the advances made by the manufacturing industry to construction. Aluprof UK were invited to take an early design role in developing a unitised facade system, the MB-SE120 which has a UW value of <1.3 W(m2K) that meets the P-DfMA specification pioneered by architects and engineers Bryden Wood. Construction was led by Sir Robert McAlpine and Mace, working together in an innovative joint venture (JV) partnership. Using the latest anodising and fabrication technology the life expectancy of the facade on the Forge can be assured for many decades ahead - a testament to aluminium's continuing sustainability. Aluprof are proud to be one of Europe's largest aluminium systems companies. Specification support is available through the company’s website at aluprof.co.uk, directly from their UK head office in Altrincham or from their London office at the Building Design Centre by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005. 31

RESTORING FAITH IN TIMBER WINDOWS As a result of poor practices in the 1970s and 1980s, people lost faith in timber fenestration. Along came uPVC and aluminium – the “maintenance-free solution” to forever windows! Despite huge advances in timber window technology ensuring they last 60 years or more and the obvious environmental benefits many people, including architects still find themselves doubting Thomases! But, benefits of modern paints and stains alongside good design can have a seismic impact on the longevity of timber windows and doors.

WHAT DOES DA VINCI’S “LAST SUPPER” HAVE TO DO WITH TIMBER WINDOWS TODAY? Da Vinci was the master of experimentation who tried a new technique to paint the moment that Christ told his Apostles that one of them would betray him. The scene would typically have been painted on wet plaster, but this fresco technique was fast-drying and would have required him to work quickly. Da Vinci wanted to work slowly so he applied his pigments to a dry plaster wall. The result was a painting that didn’t adhere to its surface due to the technique and Milan’s humidity. The Last Supper was destined not to last without intervention.

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS? A lot when it comes to our own use of paints and coatings for timber fenestration. From surface preparation, to allowing for location and humidity, paint is only as good as its substrate. 32

HOW ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ARE MODERN COATINGS? There is no getting away from the fact that modern coatings contain plastic. However, this is what gives them longevity, meaning windows made to BWF standards like George Barnsdale’s will last 60+ years with minimal maintenance. You can have an excellent paint product, but if you don’t apply it properly, it won’t perform as it should. Companies need to take a comprehensive approach incorporating a raft of processes to ensure the paint performs at optimum levels. It starts with the timber. Manufacturers such as George Barnsdale use engineered timber because it is more stable and provides an excellent base for the coatings When the frames arrive at the paint shop, they go through a unique four stage process starting with two preservative coats applied with a flowcoater. This method ensures the coating gets into all the hard-to-reach areas. Once the preservative has been applied, it is time to paint. George Barnsdale was the first manufacturer to use a robot to apply a high film build base spray coat and a top coat. Whilst the material preparation and the paint processes are critical to the performance of the paints, in order to ensure a window or door will last 60 years or more, you have to build in good design too. George Barnsdale has been at the forefront of research into joint designs with the BRE and was the first UK manufacturer to use internal beading in the 1990s. Processes like end grain sealing ensure that the timber is protected in the unlikely event the joint fails.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PAINTS AND COATINGS?

DOORS, WINDOWS & FITTINGS

coatings are non-toxic, water-based, microporous, and extremely durable. They must adhere to EN927 which considers durability, performance, and environmental impact. It also covers methods for measuring the thickness of coatings.

By extending the life of a painted surface, less repainting is required, reducing the environmental footprint associated with manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of paint. In addition, there is the positive environmental (and financial) impact of not having to repaint every few years, hiring scaffolding, manpower, materials etc. Of course, extending the life of the painted surface also extends the life of the window or door which also saves valuable resources over time as they need replacing far less frequently. Architects and builders can help to increase the durability of timber windows by designing the building to reduce exposure to extreme weather. One of the ways of doing this is to follow the Victorians’ example and set windows in reveal. This doesn’t have to be old-fashioned. You can make a design feature of it, as the architect did with the Orseh Kaneh building in Tehran. Other ways to promote longevity of timber windows is to set them on stone, tile or aluminium and to avoid extended cills where possible.

FAITH RESTORED? Global warming is a huge concern, architects are well aware of the need to design environmentally friendly buildings. Timber is the most sustainable choice and the concerns around durability are addressed by specifying high-performance windows from companies like George Barnsdale. Hopefully, this article has helped restore faith in timber windows and doors.

The terms “paints” and “coatings” are often used interchangeably. However, for the most part, paints are considered to be used primarily for aesthetics, while coatings are used principally to prevent substrate deterioration or for corrosion protection. Modern coatings are nothing like the paints and stains of old. Unlike the lead paints of the past, today’s

OFFICE AND GYM MOST DESIRED EXTRA ROOMS SAYS NEW STUDY

A new nationwide study on UK homeowners has revealed what they'd use extra space for in their homes if they had the opportunity. The #EUREXTRAROOM campaign by leading home improvement specialists Eurocell which has launched their new extensions offer, lists an office as the most desired extra room with more than a third (34%) stating this is the first thing they'd add to their house if they had the opportunity. Nearly half (47%) of those polled wish they had more space in their home and 17% said they're actively looking to move so they can have more space for their family. Eurocell spoke with Matt Lanninge, a bespoke estate agent and property consultant at The Property Expert about this result “The results of the survey are unsurprising. This year we have seen more and more homebuyers coming to us with requests for larger kitchens and home office spaces when looking for new homes as their needs and lifestyles change. We expect to see this demand for extra space to grow even further over the coming years.” Further results from the #EUREXTRAROOM campaign show that following an office, a gym is the most wanted extra room (26%), then a reading room (24%) and a snug (23%).

THE TOP FIVE ROOMS HOMEOWNERS WANT TO ADD: 1. Office – 34% 2. Gym – 26% 34

3. Reading room – 24% 4. Snug – 23% 5. Dining room – 22% With this in mind, more than half (55%) in the survey said they'd considered getting an extension built on their home to create extra space for their family. But of those who've considered it, the cost of it (62%) was the main reason for holding them back from following through with it. Other reasons for not going ahead were the risk of the price changing during the build (30%) and the hassle and mess it would cause (25%). Beth Boulton, marketing director at Eurocell commented: “Launching our conservatory replacement service to homeowners means they can update their unused, outdated conservatories into modern, usable spaces without the time and hassle of an expensive extension. The results from our study show that having extra space in our homes is a priority for nearly half of homeowners, and no doubt the change in the way we live postpandemic has impacted the way we use that space. “Creating a home-office has never been more popular as working from home remains a permanent option in the UK, and with that, the opportunity to get more from your house like a gym and family rooms, proving a reading room, snug, and dining room to spend more time with your loved ones. We expect the demand for this to stay, as the housing market forces more to adopt the 'don't move, improve' notion.”

CREATING A STYLISH VIEWPOINT WITH JULIETTE AND PARIS BALCONIES

In urban and rural dwellings, the trend for balconies that fill interiors with natural light and make the most of views externally is on the rise. Juliette and Paris balconies are a particularly popular option where space is at a premium. The latest systems from CRL make light work of installation and maintenance while always focusing on safety first. Increasingly being specified for new buildings and added to existing dwellings, for practical and decorative purposes, Juliette balconies provide a safety barrier by means of the balustrades or railings. Available in a brushed or polished finish, the CRL Juliette Balcony System is made from 316 stainless steel for durability and strength. Designed for use with 12mm toughened glass or 13.52mm toughened laminated glass, the top and bottom rail provide reassurance and safety should the glass fail. 38

Creating a streamlined finish with its frameless design and offering an uninterrupted view from a balcony, the CRL Paris Balcony system is designed to be used with 13.52mm, 17.52mm & 21,52mm toughened laminated glass. The 1200mm long profiles can be face fixed or reveal fixed to brickwork, concrete or steel and can be chosen in a grey or white finish. A top cap rail is not required as the toughened laminated glass offers extra protection if one single pane fails. Both the CRL Paris and Juliette Balcony Systems are tested to comply with building and safety regulations, including BS6180:2011. The Planning Portal numbers show that self-build homes account for 7-10% of new homes built in England every year – approximately 12,000 homes. This is in stark contrast to Europe, where the numbers are much higher. Self-builds make up over 50% of all new homes built in Germany.

SELFBUILD INSURANCE: MINIMISING ADDITIONAL UNEXPECTED COSTS Most self-builders will want to work to a set budget, particularly given the impact of inflation on things like materials and labour. Some only consider insurance once they start building on their plot, but purchasing insurance when you exchange contracts protects your plot. Once the land is bought, it's exposed to many risks. Selfbuild insurance policies cover a range of risks in one straightforward policy. This includes the potential for members of the public to get injured,

40

WHAT INCENTIVES ARE AVAILABLE FOR SELF-BUILDERS? In England, the Help to Build scheme offers an equity loan to buy land and build a home. Self-build mortgages are available from registered Help to Buy lenders, with a minimum 5% deposit. Mortgages are interest-only until the building is complete, and then the Help to Build loan is paid to the mortgage provider. The loan is interest-free for the first five years. With thorough preparation, a self-built home can be a rewarding and cost-effective way to own your own uniquely designed home. To get a quote, call us on 0800 230 0225 or visit www.selfbuild.uk.com

HEATING, VENTILATION & INSULATION

Grant Aerona³ R32 Air Source Heat Pump

REDUCE YOUR ENERGY BILLS, CARBON FOOTPRINT, AND UNWANTED NOISE WITH QUIET MARK CERTIFIED HEAT PUMPS Quiet Mark (UK) Rising energy bills are of increasing importance as prices are set to surge even further towards the end of the year. Heat pumps offer an efficient solution as they generate about 3.5kWh of heat for every 1kWh of electricity used. That’s 350% efficiency! And although noise levels of heating products is a common concern, heat pumps are usually quieter than fossil fuel boilers. Depending on manufacturer and installation, a ground source heat pump may reach 42 decibels, and an air source heat pump may reach 40 to 60 decibels. “During the colder months, your heating can be on for long periods of the day, especially with working from home either part or full-time now being standard for many office-based workers. So making sure your main source of heat, whether that’s a heat pump or a boiler, isn’t going to disturb you when it comes on, can be essential”, says Poppy Szkiler, Quiet Mark CEO & Co-Founder. As part of the government's bid to cut carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency and move towards a greener future, developers will be obliged 42

to fit air or ground-source heat pumps in new homes from 2025. As a result, tens of thousands of heat pumps have already been installed across the UK. To meet our net zero targets, the UK Government expects that millions of heat pumps will need to be intalled over the next 10-15 years. With £450 million of grant funding available over three years from 2022 to 2025, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government initiaitve to encourage homeowners in England and Wales to install low carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps. According to the Energy Saving Trust, you can expect to pay between £7,000 and £13,000 for an air source heat pump and up to £24,000 for a ground source unit. That’s significantly more than what you would typically pay for a new gas boiler. However, with a heat pump, average savings on fuel bills may eventually recoup at least some of the cost of installation, with an estimated saving of around £375 a year on your heating bills (based on a fourbedroom detached house in the UK).

GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS Sometimes referred to as a ground-to-water heat pump, a ground source heat pump transfers heat from the ground outside to warm the inside of your home. A mixture of water and antifreeze called thermal transfer fluid (TTF) flows around pipes buried in your outdoor space. Heat from the soil is absorbed into the fluid and passes through a heat exchanger, which extracts the heat of the fluid and transfers it to your radiators, underfloor heating system or hot water cylinder for your hot taps and showers. According to the Energy Saving Trust, benefits of owning a ground source heat pump include cutting the cost of your fuel bills, reducing your home's carbon footprint and being able to heat your home as well as your water.

AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Grant Aerona³ R32 Air Source Heat Pump

If you don’t have space for a ground source heat pump or don’t want your garden dug up for it to be installed, then an air source model will probably be a good option to consider. These come in two forms, ‘monobloc’ and ‘split’, again, good advice is key to ensure you get the right one installed in your house. Monobloc units are currently the most common in the UK and come in one single outdoor unit that is connected to the property's heating system which can be controlled by an indoor control panel or thermostat. In comparison, split heat pumps have outside units as well as internal units that require more complex installations. They do however, come with the benefit of being smaller and quieter. When it comes to installing an air source heat pump, considerably more planning must go into the preparation compared to the installation of a conventional boiler replacement.

WARMFLOW ZENO AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS For over 50 years, Warmflow has been creating innovative, award winning heating products for homes across the UK & Ireland. From the outset of designing the Warmflow Zeno heat pump it was conceived to be one of the most efficient 46

appliances in its class. Unlike most other heat pumps which produce heat at a fixed output, this heat pump makes use of the latest variable speed compressor technology to produce heat at the rate you need. This gives the heat pump a wide output range and it automatically modulates within this range depending on your heat demands. For ease of installation, the pump and flow switch are conveniently housed within the heat pump casing. This speeds up installation and minimises wiring and plumbing needed on site. The unit also has an inbuilt monitoring system, which monitors flow temperature and system temperatures for easy commissioning. A dedicated wiring centre greatly simplifies connection to external wiring and sensors making this heat pump very easy to install and service. Independent tests have shown its efficiency to be up to 555% at A7W35. This means that for every 1kW of electricity consumed 5.55kW of heat is produced.

SEMPATAP THERMAL – AN ECONOMICAL SOLUTION

Everybody in the country is acutely aware of the astronomical increases, 45%, in gas and electricity prices – households throughout the country are suffering and the plight of solid wall homes appears to be even more desperate. Improving the thermal efficiency of solid wall properties has largely been ignored mainly because the solutions have been very expensive and very disruptive hence, the title “hard to heat homes”. The UK’s housing stock is estimated at approximately 25 million homes, 36% are solid wall constructed – solid brick, solid stone, pre 1944 timber frame and non-traditional, concrete construction (PRC’s). These homes are generally energy inefficient; an unfilled cavity wall loses approximately 35% of heat – a solid wall loses a staggering 45-50%. Fuel poverty is a major issue that the Government has made a commitment to eliminate in vulnerable groups and to end it altogether by the year 2030. It is currently estimated that there are up to 3.26 million (Oct 22) households now in fuel poverty and this figure is expected to rise even further with the continued increase in the cost of living. 66% of these households live in solid wall homes, the majority of which are vulnerable householders, therefore, the most vulnerable families live in the most fuel inefficient properties. Illnesses such as influenza, heart disease and strokes are all exacerbated by the cold. Exposure to cold results in a 30% increase in the death rate in the UK. Solid wall homes are also more prone to condensation, which results in black mould growth on the walls and ceilings, which is also a very serious health risk causing upper respiratory infections – asthma and bronchial complaints. Sempatap Thermal is a unique insulation material which has been extensively used in the UK and Europe for over 30 years and installed in 1000s of flats and houses. It is insulation on a roll as easy as wallpaper to apply, and can be decorated with virtually anything – wallpaper, emulsion paint, even tiled. 50

Sempatap Thermal is quick and easy to apply and at only 10mm thick it can be installed without having to vacate the property, it can even be applied on a DIY basis. It has been tested by the National Physical Laboratory and figures from the Building Research Establishment show considerable energy saving and it has a life expectancy of 30 years. Once applied to the walls/ceilings Sempatap Thermal substantially reduces heat loss, saves on heating bill expenditure and rooms immediately feel warmer. Explore the possibilities of what can be done with the press of a button So what can be achieved with a set of buttons, here are some examples:

One of the benefits of a home with automation is that the wall switch has progressed to the point where it is capable of being programmed to carry out a variety of functions. Wall switches that incorporate a number of functions (especially those with heating and lighting) and any sort of display tend to be called room controllers. Most makes of light switch can be expanded so additional buttons can control additional features. With a system such as KNX there is a huge choice of different switches from different manufacturers and most have a variety of frame and button styles and colours.

-

Lighting scenes setting a number of different circuits to different light levels all at once

-

Adding additional lights to a button press - may be some external lights need to be switched them from inside the house.

-

Controlling functions other than just lighting, may be an automated blind or shutter could be added to a second button, in the case of assisted living buttons on one switch plate can include lighting, blinds, window openers and door openers.

The trend for the automated home is to keep the wall furniture very immediate and functional and to always label in some way a switch with multiple buttons. For functions that require greater time to set, the app is the ideal setting, setting timer schedules for heating: towel rails or lights and storing and saving lighting scenes.

FAMILY VS FORMAL LIVING ROOMS WITH BRANDT DESIGN Luxury kitchen and interior design specialists, Brandt Design, deliver a range of solutions for the living room as the UK homeowner demands an everyday family room alongside a more formal space to entertain guests in or enjoy some much needed downtime. Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design explains, “As more of us enjoy a more homecentred lifestyle, we are finding that homes with two living rooms are helping to achieve a good balance of social and private areas on the ground floor. Structured hybrid working has also increased the need for today’s professional to want a designated area to switch off from the home office and so making space for an exercise bike or yoga mat will do wonders for your mental health. Having two living rooms will also benefit the multigenerational household, as young adults can stream a movie while doing their homework in one as the grown-ups entertain friends or simply relax in peace!” Created and installed by Brandt Design, these contrasting living room spaces will inspire you to rethink your home with relaxation and wellness 56

in mind. Designed for a family home in rural Hertfordshire, the family room which is open to the main kitchen and dining area features classic Heritage Furniture by Brandt Design, with a variety of closed storage and display units. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the private living space features a more paired back aesthetic with bespoke stone fireplace lovingly handcrafted by Brandt Design at its stone fabrication centre in Stevenage. Each room offers a distinct atmosphere that is perfectly tailored to the homeowner’s needs and personal taste. The use of colour was key to creating the different moods in each living space, whether delivering a sophisticated and adult-friendly décor in deep blue, or ensuring a bright and comfortable family space with more neutral colour palette. What style of living room appeals to you most?

INTERIORS & INTERIOR DESIGN

LAWRENCE PARK StudioAC introduces Lawrence Park Residence, located in a tree lined residential neighbourhood in North Toronto. The project brief requested attention to function to create a home that a family could grow into while ensuring the formal response was equally considered and the space was subdued and minimal. The Lawrence Park Residence looks to navigate many contradictions that can all be true at once - creating a singular response to the complexity of a home.

How can a floor plan celebrate openness and transparency, while still creating a distinct spatial identity? How can a facade conceal the interiors, while maximizing light throughout? The front facade appears stoic, with grey brick and limestone stretching across the South face, interrupted by a very systematic placement of openings. The entry is flanked by an intimate living space that conceals the open floor plan at the back of the house. This space is lined with tall, narrow windows, creating a staccato play between the solid brick facade and brief moments of transparency. Beyond this, a double height space invites a winding staircase and brings light into the kitchen at the center of the plan. The living space at the rear extends into the yard to create an exterior harbor between living and dining - fostering a relationship between the spaces, while creating distinct separation and identity for each. This harbor introduces a long stretch of West facing windows on an otherwise North facing facade and, in doing so, invites the warm evening light into the plan.

TECHNICAL SHEET Completion: 2023 Architect: StudioAC The winding stair leads to a double height gallery space overlooking the kitchen, at the heart of the home. The primary bedroom cantilevers beyond the ground floor plan, stretching into the rear yard and overlooking the west facing reveal in the plan. Distinctly more private, the second story is wrapped in brick, contrasting the vast stretch of glazing that reveals the living and dining spaces below. The rear of the home is considerably more playful in form and articulation than its stoic front, contributing to Lawrence Park Residence as an architecture of juxtaposition and contrast.

USING CONCRETE IN THE HOME

Founded in 2009 and based in Yorkshire, Verus Construction, the modern residential specialist has recently completed a luxury home project on Sandmoor Avenue, Leeds. Through the use of polished concrete flooring throughout the ground floor, the specialist team has created a distinctive home that celebrates open plan living, brutalism and minimalist luxury. Damian Barker, Founder and CEO of Verus Construction, says of the completed project: “In the last decade there’s been a real shift in interest toward buildings using concrete as part of attentiongrabbing home interiors. We’ve seen exposed concrete ceilings and particularly polished concrete flooring spike in popularity, giving the feeling of a simple and honest shell and creating clean and calming spaces. Brutalism as an interior style often makes use of concrete surfaces, creating hard angles whilst still managing to feel both warm and welcoming as interior flooring and walls merge and flow into the outdoor landscape.”

COHESIVE CONCRETE SPACES A polished concrete floor has been used throughout the ground floor of Sandmoor Avenue. Hardwearing, easy to clean and dust resistant, this industrial look is on trend and works brilliantly with the underfloor heating installed throughout. The cool modern concrete style has been mimicked through the use of polished plaster on the fireplace surround to continue the clean lines and connectivity throughout the home. The fireplace

66

blends seamlessly into the surrounding walls and acts as a focal point in the ground floor, connecting the hallway, kitchen diner and living room together to create a calm and connected living space. The cohesion and simplicity throughout the home creates a quiet luxury, elevating the interiors whilst maintaining tranquillity and balance. The clean aesthetic creates a serene space that seamlessly flows into the outdoors. The industrial style of the flooring has been complemented with pops of colour by the owners to create a trendy and sleek living space.

OPEN PLAN LIVING When considering the space, Damian and his team decided to create double height glass walls to complement the concrete flooring and streamline the eye, guiding you through the home via the consistency of the material, creating a connected space that flows naturally into the concrete patio outdoors. The trend of open plan living spaces has grown hugely over the last few years. Using industrial and natural surfaces such as stone, wood and concrete in your indoor living spaces creates a connection to your outdoor living space. . The concrete floor matches seamlessly with the patio flooring to create an open plan space that allows the garden to be an extension of the home. www.verusconstruction.co.uk www.instagram.com/verusconstructionltd www.linkedin.com/company/verus-construction-ltd

LIGHT 23 A ONE-STOPSHOP OF INSPIRATION FOR ALL DESIGNERS LiGHT – the only trade show in the UK dedicated to lighting specification - will build on the success of its first year in 2022 by enhancing its offering to attract the wider design community. A common misconception is that trade shows dedicated to lighting specification are just for lighting designers. This, put simply, just isn’t the case... Lighting is one of the first things that should be considered when working on a project – whether you’re a client, developer, architect, interior designer, or lighting designer. The importance of working with the right tools and having the right knowledge to produce the best light – and in turn the best environment for the end user – is undeniable. So many times, lighting is an afterthought on a project, when it should be at the forefront of everybody’s minds.

72

SO, IF YOU’RE NOT A LIGHTING DESIGNER WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND LIGHT 23? Well, ask yourself these questions... 1. Do you work on commercial and / or high-end residential projects? 2. Do the projects you work on feature lighting in some capacity? 3. Would you like to understand more about the effects of good and bad lighting on design schemes and the end user? 4. Would you like to broaden your knowledge on the built environment?

LIGHTING & ELECTRICAL

5. Would you like to make new connections within the industry? If you answered YES to even just one of these questions, then LiGHT 23 is the event for you and with FREE visitor registration, what’s to lose?

"The importance of working with the right tools and having the right knowledge to produce the best light – and in turn the best environment for the end user – is undeniable."

LiGHT 23 will feature 100s of high-end lighting brands all under one roof – perfect for residential and commercial projects large and small. From sourcing IP-rated products that can bring a stunning bathroom or garden design scheme to life; to statement decorative pieces for a restaurant or bar project; or perhaps you’re working on a big hotel project and need a company that can fulfil a large order... Maybe you need something more bespoke? With lighting brands from all over the world on show, we guarantee, there will be a product at LiGHT 23 that fits the brief. Not only that, LiGHT 23 will once again host the highly regarded talks programme [d]arc thoughts, featuring experts from across the world of design, editors from speciality design magazines including arc, darc, ICON, and OnOffice, while covering topics that affect all areas of the industry, such as sustainability & circular design; designing for a global client; designing for healthy office spaces; and designing for small & large spaces, to name just a few... The BIID and IALD will also be hosting members and potential new members in the Associations Lounge at the show, which will be a welcome chill out area for visiting designers throughout the two-day event. Why not join the IALD for a drinks reception as part of the late-night opening on 21 November, or the BIID for a designers’ lunch on 22 November. Also new for this year is darc space, a dedicated area for decorative lighting brands to shine. darc space will provide lighting and interior designers and specifiers looking for their next stunning light feature a one-stop-shop of decorative lighting brands to choose from. A PASSION FOR LIGHT! AND MAKING THINGS Ian Bibby of BB Light has spent his life passionately making, designing and educating for products with greater energy efficiency. All born from a resolve to make a significant contribution to maintaining our world in all its beauty for the history to come. The art of light making is more than just interesting, it is challenging Ian states. As Art can be a tonic for human intellect and the soul, without light art would be devoid of presence and invisible. Our accelerating move inside to build environments has removed us for significant proportions of time from the daily rhythms of our sun. So, to living and working, light is everything and the issues of trying to recreate the natural rhythms of light to our environment has

74

become a challenge. This can be met by creating circadian rhythm or human centric lighting. Ian has developed a product where the colour temperature control can be varied and dimmed in a range of colour temperatures which reproduce those of sunlight seen at various times of the day. Additionally by the use of digital clock sometime referred to as atomic clock the colour temperatures will change and mimic the day long behaviour of our sun from sunrise to sunset. Currently Ian achieves this by using downlights but is committed to building various luminaire types embodying the same control and outputs such that something like a task light would perform the same function and thus greatly improve the natural rhythm of light we need for health and wellbeing.

APC FORKS APC Forks’ fleet of machines feature generic specifications in order to cover a multitude of applications, including solid tyres and extra hydraulics which make them perfect for the vast variety of applications. Indeed, the JCB Teletruk boasts unique features and benefits over any conventional forklift, and APC Forks maintains a flexible approach to try and marry a hire agreement to suit a customer’s needs. “The JCB Teletruk is great for a vast range of applications,” explained Stuart. “These include waste management, builders’ merchants, grounds maintenance, inner city projects, Crossrail, London underground, and many others.”

Established in 2008, APC Forks has its Head Office in Stockport but mainly operates from its central location in the Midlands, giving excellent access to national coverage. Filling a problematic void in the market, APC Forks can satisfy the growing need for short and long term hiring of the JCB Teletruk. Since its inception, the company has grown its high quality fleet to encompass 150 plus machines, offering both two wheel and four wheel drive options to cater for the variable site requirements of its wide range of customers. The fleet is constantly growing and most units are less than three years old, ensuring customers are getting high quality, up to date equipment. “Our hiring services are highly flexible, so our customers can get the machine without having to commit to a long-term contract,” explained Stuart Hunter, Director. Indeed, the JCB Teletruks are hired straight from APC Forks rather than via a finance house, where companies can be locked in a deal for extensive periods of time. With APC Forks’ flexible hire service, which ranges from just one week to seven years, customers can use the machine for as long or short amount of time as they need. Indeed, with high levels of uncertainty currently in the marketplace, such flexibility is essential; thanks to APC Forks, a company can react quickly to new business opportunities and if a project does not go ahead, equipment can be returned without any penalties. The JCB Teletruk is unique in that it combines the functions of a counterbalanced forklift with those of a re-handling shovel, making it the most flexible forklift on the market today. The entirety of APC Forks’ fleet has a quick-change front, which makes switching between various attachments quick and easy. These attachments can include forks, sideshifts, buckets, bale clamps, rotators, and many more. Furthermore, JCB Teletruk’s all-round visibility is superior to a conventional forklift, making it one of the safest machines available. 78

Certainly, the uses of the JCB Teletruk are versatile and numerous. “One of the JCB Teletruk’s key advantages is its telescopic boom, which allows for the loading and offloading on one side,” explained Stuart. This means that if a yard is tight on space or a customer needs to load and offload on a public highway, safety and efficiency is ensured. The JCB Teletruk is also a particular favourite with the waste industry, thanks to its high flexibility and ability to deal with any terrain with two or four wheel drive options. What’s more, the machines can be fitted with fire suppression system, making it ideal for the prevention of fires in the hardest environments. The JCB Teletruk also has no mast or carriage, meaning it is ideal when working with a bucket and grapple in challenging applications. “We now have an ever increasing fleet of electric JCB Teletruks, which will only enhance the green option for our more environmentally conscious customers and applications.” The TLT30-19/35-22E gives customers 1,900/2,200 kg capacity at two metres, and are also available for nationwide hire. Looking to the future, APC Forks will be maintaining its high quality and versatile services, regularly enhancing its fleet. “We update our fleet on a regular basis to keep up with the latest product enhancements, ensuring we are offering up to date equipment for our customers. We want to keep growing, and to continue to support infrastructure and industry.” The fact that APC Forks’ unbeatable adaptability is underpinned by committed customer service and quick response to queries makes the company the number one choice for companies in need of flexible JCB Teletruk hire. CONCRETE & STONEWORK Supplied and installed by Stone Circle in Fine Watches, Harrods, London.

WHAT DOES ‘BOOK MATCHING’ STONE MEAN? How is it achieved and why is it so much more expensive then simply laying slabs side by side?

degrees and place these on top of the others, you create the famous ‘butterfly effect’.

Often seen in high end residential bathrooms and corporate office entrances, ‘bookmatching’ is a beautiful pattern where two or four seemingly mirrored pieces of stone meet, creating a sumptuous ‘butterfly’ or ‘open book’ image.

And if the project has enough space, and you have enough material to fill that space, then you can create the most stunning finishes such as this elegant wall of marble fabricated by Stone Circle for the watch department at Harrods, London.

To start, a quarried block of stone is sliced, like a loaf of bread, by huge multi bladed saws, cooled by constant water, gnawing back and forth, down through the stone. The raw slabs, now 20mm thick, are then polished, photographed and calibrated. It’s at this point that the decision is made as to which faces of the slab to polish.

Of course, the process takes much longer than plain cutting, because the sawyer has to cut each slab in exactly the same position to create the perfect match. Wastage increases too, because reproducing the pattern limits the amount of the slab that can be used. And if you accidentally break one piece…….? You might have to start again. The risks are higher and so are the costs.

Heavily veined or patterned material is better for book matching. The direction and thickness of the veins giving the greatest effect. If you imagine a closed book, you can only see one face - the cover. But if you open the book you can see two faces. So, like the open book, the faces touching each other in the sliced block are polished and a mirrored pattern or ‘book match’ is revealed. If you then take four book matched slabs, cut next to each other, and turn two of them through 180

Block of stone

82

But the effects are exceptional and unique and, I would argue, worth every penny. If you need assistance with a stone project or would like to talk to a stone expert about your project, your choices and how to use this gorgeous material to achieve fantastic results please call Robert Merry on 07771997621, email info@stoneconsultants.co.uk or visit the Stone Consultants at www.stoneconsultants.co.uk.
