RETURN OF THE MUSIC MAN DJ SHAWN SANGA IS KICKIN’ IT OLD SCHOOL

In the February 2016 issue of Motorhead we featured the 2003 SVT Cobra that belonged to local celebrity DJ Shawn Sanga. The car was immaculate, it was a complete and total showstopper with dozens of awards and “Best of Show” honors. One would think that after spending years to get the car just the way he wanted it, that Sanga would hold onto it, except of course for the simple little fact that he is very good friends with the man they call Mr. Muscle Cars, Nick Cincotti. If the name Nick Cincotti sounds familiar to you it is because in the past we have featured about a half dozen of his extremely high quality restorations, mostly GM Muscle cars. And so it began, Sanga spent a few weekends here and there at the Cincotti garage and got the itch for something from the Muscle Car era. While his Cobra was an extremely nice piece and was put together with the absolute best of everything, it just simply lacked the personality that a 60’s car possesses. Even I, having owned nothing but Mustangs have to admit that after a day at the Cincotti garage, I’m almost always on ebay and Craigslist looking for 66-67 GTO’s, 67-69 Firebirds, or other miscellaneous project cars. That’s where it starts, and that’s how DJ Sanga found his 1968 Camaro. The car overall was in great shape when he got it. It was complete, it ran and drove and needed very little to be a reliable cruiser. From the first turn of the key, Sanga knew he had made the right choice. The 383ci stroker had monstrous power, thanks in part to a period correct 144 Weiand B&M blower. The stock Muncie 4-speed helped transfer the power and a stock 10 bolt rear-end that spins a set of 3.73 gears. Stock suspension was retained with the exception of Lakewood Street and Strip Traction Bars. All four corners are capped off with 15x8 rallye wheels, with 235/60’s in the front and a wider 275/60 in the rear to deliver the perfect stance. Overall, the car had an acceptable finish for a cruiser but of course being quite the perfectionist, DJ Sanga decided to freshen the car up, inside and out. Joe Gulla did an absolutely incredible job reskinning all the seats while the car was in for body work, which consisted of replacing the floor boards and pulling a few small dings that occurred from everyday use. Goodmark’s 4 inch cowl hood caught Sanga’s eye and he figured while the car is being painted, now is the time to throw that in. Normally, a flawless black finish is the way to go, in my opinion, but Sanga took it one step further and went over the top with a pair of rally stripes painted with a Cadillac pearl white metallic that absolutely pops, like you wouldn’t believe. Once reassembled, the Camaro took a trip to Unique Car Care where veteran Detailer Rick Nelson worked his magic inside and out to deliver a breathtaking finish. Pictures really don’t do this car justice, as you really need to see it in person to appreciate all the hard work that went into the
transformation. When asked what his favorite upgrade to the car was, he was quick to mention “the upgraded co-pilot” his new girlfriend Moira Hunt, who is also a favorite of Motorhead’s Junior Journalist Xander Yessaian. Then of course our favorite question- “What’s your future plans for the Camaro”, to which Sanga quickly informed us it’s already in the works, “a late model ZL-1 drivetrain swap”, which will definitely change the personality of this already intimidating ride. Personally, I can hardly wait to see the build and will certainly report the finished product to our readers!! Stay tuned folks!!

On July 5-7, 2019, the National Hot Rod Association brought the NHRA big show, the Mello Yello series, to Epping, New Hampshire for the 7th time in as many years. Within this big prestigious event were graduates of the New England Dragway Jr. Dragster program, which has been going on for decades now and is turning out not only tomorrow’s racers today, but some fine young people who will help shape the future for us all.
From here in, we will let some of the racers who chose to weigh in on this story tell you, in their own words, what it mean to them to be a New England Dragway Jr. Dragster program graduate and to now race in the prestigious Mello Yello series event in 2019.
Some of the contestants in the 2019 New England Nationals from various classes, which are former NED Jr. Dragster racers included: Nostalgia Funny Car racer Stacy McGlory, Nick Willard and Angela Kinson in Top Sportsman, Joey Wallis and Zac Biron in Top Dragster, Jenna Tavares and Jamie Blake in Super Gas, Kristen Tavares, Brian Bell, Justin Mason, and Jackson Worters in Super Comp, Patty Blake, Jonathan Leahey, and Jared Kinson in Super Street.
Kristen Tavares: “I started Jr’s in 2006 (10yrs old) and graduated Jr’s in 2014 (18yr). I won the race on the day I graduated Jr’s and remember having so many emotions—joy, nostalgia, and some sadness since Jr’s came to an end that day. I always tell people I had the absolute best childhood because of juniors. Not only was I driving race cars before I could drive an actual car, but I was able to travel all over the east coast and as far as TN and meet and remain friends with racers all over the country. I’ve met some of my best friends through racing that I now consider them family. And I always say how fortunate I am that I was able to spend weekend’s away racing with my Dad and both of my siblings, Jenna and Kyle. Racing has created indescribable bonds with both my family and racing friends. Some of my fondest memories in Jr’s include winning on Father’s Day, winning an IHRA Ironman, and racing at the JDRL Nationals in Bristol, TN.
It was not that long ago, the aforementioned racers were youngsters in size small or extra small fire suits, trying on a Simpson Helmet for the first time, just like the one mom or dad wears on the weekend. They were once the envy of their schoolmates, who could only dream about sitting in an NHRA Jr. Dragster. Imagine the anticipation of getting into a Jr. dragster, preparing to rocket down the drag strip for the first time as a child. If you think Christmas Eve is a sleepless night for kids, imagine trying to sleep the night before
Racing in the 2019 New England Nationals was an amazing feeling! I think every Jr racers aspires to race in a national event at their home track, as well as every Jr’s dream to win the big Wally! The national was my first race out this season so I was rather nervous and just hoping the car ran smoothly and that I remember how to drive! I ended up qualifying #1 with a .000 light to earn a bye run during the first round (and another .000 light that bye run). I advanced to the last 7 cars in competition, made it to the quarterfinals. I disappointed I wasn’t able to take home the Wally that day; of course. But nothing beats the feeling of racing in front of thousands of people, the smell of nitro in the air and racing on the same track as the pros, or signing the occasional autograph for race fans. Nothing beats a weekend of going rounds with the support of family and friends by my side. Joey Wallis: “I graduated from racing Jr’s in 2013. That was the year in which I won the championship at New England Dragway. Back when I first started in Jr’s, I raced at Oxford Dragway, in Maine, on Saturdays and in NH at NED
never left. I loved my time in Jr’s and think that it taught me a lot about sportsmanship and life. You won’t always be on top but that’s ok. I tend to go into race day with the mentality of as long as I have fun and nothing gets hurt it’s a good day. To race in the 2019 New England National was amazing. I had participated in the previous national events as a crew member helping out my dad and brother but this was the first one where I was actually a driver. Competing in that arena was awesome, there are so many talented racers and to be able to be among them as a fellow driver was cool.

on Sundays. I came in second one year in the two junior dragster series they had and the next year won the championship. Aside from those big wins meeting my lifelong friends along the way are the best memories I have of racing junior dragsters. Racing in this year’s national NHRA Mello Yello event was exciting. Being in front of such a large crowd is exhilarating! It was a tough race as I came up short in the second round by .0043 seconds. But you can bet I’ll try again for another Wally next year! Patty Blake: I started racing Jr’s when I was 8 and stopped when I was a freshman in high school, about 14 yrs old. I don’t regret stopping for high school sports but I do wish that I had taken the time to do both. When I stepped away it was probably for about 8 or 9 years before I came back as a driver, I would still go to the track and support my brother (who has a dragster in Super Comp), dad (who has an altered in Top Dragster) and uncle (who has a Top Alcohol Funny Car) from time to time. When I came back I was welcomed like I had

But this 2015 Nissan GT-R puts all of that nonsense to bed. This car is what the Lamborghini and Ferrari guys fear when they see it coming up on them or bet-

After selling his C6 ZO6 Corvette, Russell bought this car with the intention of making it an absolute monster on the streets and at the track. The car was bought as a one-owner car that was literally bought new by an older woman that never beat on the car at all. Russell had a vision and set right out with buying parts for the car.
The rims are 20 inch by 10.5 in the front and 20 by 12 in the rear and they are made by Rohana wheel company, the tires are Toyo 888R’s and make the car hookup perfectly on the streets or the track. The wing and canard’s and brake cooling ducts are by APR which is a top company for these products. The car also has a Visconti fuel system that is good for 1100 wheel horsepower. A lot of guys have had problems with the transmissions in the GTRs but Russell has that problem

1969 Road Runner
By JED GREEKE Almost done! The Road Runner build continues! Full restorations can take more than a year of steady work, and at about 8 months in we are moving along very nicely and should be finished by the end of next month! Since our last update, the Roadrunner is near completion. What started as a stock 69 Roadrunner has been transformed, to an absolute MOPAR beast in a mostly stock appearance! Dave (the owner) wanted performance, and some modern touches while keeping the appearance true to a 69 Roadrunner. We blasted the entire body, patched and got her straight, and then she
was covered in the beautiful MOPAR blue that the Roadrunners are known for. Next she got a brand new interior but kept it stock in appearance with the only visible changes were an upgraded CD player and the vintage air controls, which mounted in the stock location. 1991 CORVETTE ZR1 MIKE GALLO For those that don’t know, the 1991 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 was a great and very fast car when it first came out. With 375 horsepower and a top speed of close to 180 miles per hour, it was ahead of its time. The LT5 motor was developed by Lotus and machined and put together by Mercury Marine in Stillwater, Oklahoma. I’ll bet you didn’t know that. The company had excellent quality control and would build 18 engines a day, shipping them to Bowling Green, Kentucky for installation. The LT5 had four overhead camshafts and an 11 to 1 compression ratio with four valves per cylinder. When the car came out in 1991 the ZR1 was capable of 0 to 60 miles per hour times within 4.3 seconds and a 13 second quarter mile at around 110 miles an hour. One of the nice things was that the fuel injection system shut down eight of the 16 intake runners until half throttle so the engine was powerful and flexible with a 7200 RPM redline. The ZR1 was built as a coupe with an optional Targa top and the car was equipped only with a 6-speed manual transmission. One of the ways to know you were looking at a ZR1 is that it had a small badge that was affixed below the right rear tail light that said ZR1. The wheels were 11 inches wide and the tires were 17 inches and were rated to 193 miles per hour which is a Z rated tire. The rear of the car was widened 3 inches which meant the car needed a different rear clip, doors and rocker panels from other C4 Corvettes. The ZR1 also had possibly the first valet key with two settings. In normal operation the secondary intake ports were disabled limiting the power
to around 200 horsepower…in the power mode the power would increase to around 375 to 380 horsepower. The base price of a 1991 Corvette was $31,900 and the ZR1 package added another $27,000. That package included power leather seats with 14 setting selective ride and handling. The car also had a Bose stereo and a new low tire pressure monitor system. Some of these cars were sold at dealerships for around $100,000. The value and price has stayed around $20,000$40,000 to this day. And hopefully their value will increase as time goes on. This is just another example of a great vehicle that Chevrolet put out in the 1990s. Have you seen any of these cars around?

Over the past two and a half years I can honestly say that I’ve been photographed in literally hundreds of vehicles ranging from race cars to show cars, and even a few exotics. While I’m considered the “Mopar Guy” here at Motorhead, I do in fact have a certain appreciation for the exotics, as obviously they are breathtaking in appearance and superb in performance and handling. My first experience in a high end car came in the form of a brand new Porsche owned by my friend Glenn, who let me check out the car at the Luggnutz Cruise Night a while back. Glenn appeared a few months later at a Veteran’s Benefit show with a brand new McLaren and once again let me check it out and get behind the wheel for some photo opportunities. This is pretty generous considering at the time I was barely a year old and
was allowed inside such an expensive machine. Recently Glenn picked up another McLaren and when we ran into him at Cruise Night again he invited us to his annual Car Show that benefits the Pelham NH Food Pantry. In the past my schedule has never allowed me to attend this show, which is

unfortunate because people always rave about the turnout and the extremely high end cars that attend. Finally, my busy schedule had an opening and I gathered my Dad, Motorhead Writer Ed Yessaian, and we headed off to support a very good cause. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a Pelham Police Officer because my Dad pulled over to ask if he could park somewhere close so he could run back and forth if I needed my cooler or diaper supplies. The officer put my Dad’s truck right in front of the Police station that was just a few feet from the show. The same officer later allowed us
into one of the Police station conference rooms for some privacy when I required some attention and a break from the sun. The day was already starting off great. Immediately upon entering the show we saw Glenn’s McLaren, our friend George’s Lamborghini Huracan, and a white Viper that we occasionally see on the highway Sunday mornings. In addition to those familiar faces, row after row after row of cars and trucks poured into the show with pretty much something for everyone- muscle cars, race cars, exotics, street rods, you name it, and it was here!!! Personally my favorite cars were the bright red C7 Z06 and the Blue Superbird that looks like one of the characters from the movie Cars. My
dad’s favorites were the Magenta Chevy II and the red Falcon convertible. Of course there were dozens more so look for a few feature articles in upcoming issues of Motorhead. You heard it here first. Xander Y- OUT!!

SPEEDWAY UPDATE Woody Pitkat Riding High Following Two Thompson Wins in One Day By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON, Conn. -- Sunday was a dream day of racing for Woody Pitkat. The former Sunoco Modified champion at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park captured the victory in the 25-lap Late Model feature driving for Hartwell Motorsports, then, followed it up with returning to Sunoco Modified victory lane driving for Dan Avery. It was two wins in one day for the Stafford, Connecticut, native. “It’s really hard to win two in one day, I’ve done it before at Stafford (Motor Speedway), but you have to realize the difference in the cars and the crews,” Pitkat said. “I would have been happy with one win but winning two is special because it’s so hard to win in anything. It’s awesome. It feels really good.” Pitkat started up at the front of the pack for the Late Model feature, and dominated the race, leading nearly all the laps in his No. 91. He was over one second ahead of second-place finisher Derek Gluchacki at the finish. “The Late Model win definitely lit a little bit of a fire in me,” Pitkat said. “It’s been a while; I don’t know when the last time I truly won a Late Model race was here at Thompson. It’s cool to be able to win for the Hartwell family. I started racing in the early 2000s and they were racing then. Jeff gave me an opportunity and we have been good together. We were good in the ACT Tour race here (on June 15) with a different car and I took some of the notes over here and it really woke it up.” Pitkat started outside the top five in the Sunoco

Modifieds, and the beginning of the race didn’t quite go his way. He dropped back through the bottom of the top 10 and had to work his way through the field in the final laps. It was a restart with Todd Owen where Pitkat was able to slide into the top spot for good. He did have to hold off defending champion Keith Rocco on the final restart, though. “My crew chief just started changing of the car after the heat race and I was just hoping we didn’t go too far,” Pitkat joked. “When Kyle (James) took the bottom in the lead, we got slid backwards and I was just trying to keep my composure. Keith got a good start and I know it’s tough on the bottom, and Keith is almost a master at restarts. He’s the best up here, especially at restarts. I knew I could trust him and the best I had been all day was going to be on the top. I felt like if we got going, it seemed like we were driving away.” Double-duty isn’t anything new for Pitkat. He’s done it before, and he will continue to do it for the rest of the season. On NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour nights, Pitkat competes in three different divisions. He’s already won a race on the tour circuit at Wall Stadium Speedway in New Jersey and has finished inside the top 10 in both tour stops at Thompson. “One of the big things for me is trying to win one race in each series I run each year,” Pitkat said. “I now can say I’ve won a Sunoco Modified race, Late Model race and a Whelen Modified Tour race. Now I just have to win a Tri Track Open Modified Series race. Hopefully I can bring some of this momentum to the tour and start running a bit better.” Driving for both Hartwell Motorsports and Dan

Avery’s team isn’t something Pitkat takes for granted. He knows competing in both of Thompson’s top divisions is a difficult task and winning takes a strong team behind him. “I’m not giving both teams my 100 percent focus at the track because I’m going back and forth, but they know that, and the biggest thing for me is surrounding myself with people that are good with it,” Pitkat said. “Both Dan and Jeff give me just about everything I could ever ask for and they both prepare such a great car.” “The last time we were here we basically totaled the Sunoco Modified and Dan was excited on the radio today... I’m just glad I was able to win for Dan, Jeff and all of the guys. These races are hard to win.” Pitkat, the remainder of the Sunoco Modified and Late Model drivers, and the rest of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competitors return to competition this Sunday, August 4. Lock City Drift will also be on hand with their New England Top Drift Series on the road course. By JOHN CONTI SR. GASSERS-you’ve gotta love ‘em. All through the 1950, 60’s, and early ‘70’s they put on quite a show on the quarter mile dragstrips throughout the country. The main intent of the owner was to raise the vehicle so that the weight transfer would plant the slicks off the line and on every shift. The way in which it was done usually incorporated a solid rear axle on leaf springs and a front tube or “I” beam axle with either parallel leafs or a transverse leaf with increased arching on the spring(s) for the height gain and in the case of the single transverse spring, “hairpin” radius rods were used to locate the front axle. The engines varied from naturally aspirated high compression small block or big block engines to Hemi headed blown and injected mills. The interior was usually gutted with one or two aluminum or fiberglass bucket seats and the bare essentials for instrumentation were usually steering column or dash mounted directly in front of the driver. Some were manually shifted four speeds, some were automatics with clutches on the input shaft to replace the fluid coupling or converter since the technology in the converters hadn’t arrived yet, and some were all out racing hydromatics, which were entry level in the early sixties, that could possibly live behind a blown Hemi making 1,000+ horsepower. GASSERS Continued from previous page taining since they were a short wheel base vehicle that was difficult to keep going straight from a hard launch to the high end of the quarter mile and they usually performed impressive wheel stands at the line. This went on for many years, which developed a desire for a hotrod enthusiast to build a street/strip gasser. Enter Wesley Bedford. Leviton Manufacturing employed Wesley for 42 years as a hydraulic technician/mechanic. His background and initiative to build a gasser for himself resulted in the ’55 Chevy Sedan delivery that you currently see on the cover of Motorhead. This Texas vehicle came to Wesley with no engine, transmission, or interior, which resulted in a frame off restoration, which included a “Fatman” subframe and a straight tube axle, as well as brakes from “Speedway Motors”. 4:56 gears in a 12 bolt posi Chevelle rear resides in the back. The ’78 350 4-bolt main block, bored .060 over has a ’68 327 large journal steel crank with 12.5:1 pistons with 202 Fuely heads and a “Crane” camshaft with matching valve train. On the top, the “Edelbrock” X-C8 cross ram manifold mounts two 450 “Holley” carburetors, jetted for the right fuel mixture to feed the high compression small block. The close ratio Muncie 4 speed launches the car with only a 2:20 first, but with the 4:56 ring and pinion, it does the job. The paint and body work was performed by State Auto Body in Providence, RI. Then Larry Hook did the outstanding flame and pin striping job. Frank’s Auto Top on Elmwood Ave in Providence stitched up the custom interior. The entire build took six years to complete from June 2006 to September 2012, but was well worth the effort anytime Wesley decides to go cruising or light the tires. The digital cluster folds up or down depending on the display mode. An 8-inch touchscreen is located in the center of the cockpit and includes functions for your radio the media navigation and more. But for that $1 million dollar price tag you do not get any driver assistance technology that is commonly found on other cars. The car is also available with a 3 camera system that can be used for on track or on road performance. Seems like you get a lot of car for the $1 million dollar price tag that they ask. I’m sure we won’t see a lot of these cars on the road locally. You get a chance stopping to your local McLaren dealership and maybe you will be lucky
enough to see one in person. Ayrton Senna da Silva was a Brazilian racing driver who won Formula One world championships for McLaren in 1988, 1990 and 1991, and who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time. MIKE GALLO One of the things that is very great is when you find an auto repair shop that does great work at a reasonable price. Not only is that a great thing but what also is great is that Miranda’s Auto Repair is a very trustworthy repair shop. Fast forward years later and Frank, with the help of his employee Ed, now run a very successful small shop with tons of attention to detail. One of the things that Frank and Ed specialize in would be hot rod cars and trucks and also the 95 and 96 Impala super sports. These guys are also well versed in fabrication and exhaust work as well as doing suspensions. They have a very well equipped shop that can handle almost any job including transmission and engine removal and replacement. Frank also can port and polish cylinder heads which is a dying art in my opinion. After 25 years of working on vehicles he clearly still has a passion for his work as it shows in some of his creations. I had the pleasure of checking out one of the Impala Super Sports that he has done work on and it is absolutely beautiful.

Etch notices that the skies continue to get darker and he is becoming more concerned about the current weather conditions. He continues driving down these New England back roads until he finally sees an old abandoned farm house with a very large empty barn in an open field. Etch slowly, and cautiously, drives his GTO towards the barn door. He stops the classic muscle car and gets out to go open the entrance double sliding doors. After sliding them both open he gets back into his GTO and enters the dark and dingy building hoping he can wait out the storm inside unnoticed by anyone in the area. His GTO rumbles into the barn and Etch can see parts of the roof falling to the hay covered ground under
him. “This looks safe... Not!” He looks through the open gaps in the roof and watches as the skies become as black as night. He has no other choice but to wait out the storm in this old run down barn and hope that it doesn’t crumble on top of him sitting inside his GTO. Etch tries to remain calm and turns on the radio to listen to some oldies music thinking that this might help distract him from impending doom if the storm hits his location directly. It’s really not working very well, but what else is there for him to do in a situation like this? The barn walls begin to shake and more sections of the roof are starting to fall around Etch sitting inside of his cherished ride. “C’mon Already!” Etch is becoming more and
more frustrated by his immediate predicament and continues to worry about his GTO. He is more worried about his car than he is about himself right now. Typical car guy. Etch turns up the music and just figures all there is to do now is to sit back and wait. Not much else he can do at the moment. The lightening lights up the skies and the thunder is practically deafening. So, Etch just turns up his radio even louder to help drown out the severe storm.

COLORADO CAT By ROB MAY Rob May’s first car, his 1969 Cougar, was initially sold by Kumpf in Denver, CO. Here we begin a look at more Colorado Mercurys! J. Patrick Bernard’s 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 makes its den in Colorado Springs, CO. This Cat was originally purchased from Vista Lincoln Mercury in Englewood CO by Hertz Rental Car! Too bad our rental choices these days are not as neat. Patrick and Cynthia have been married for 20 years and have 2 children, Abby is in college and Samantha is a senior in high school. “We enjoy going to car things - races, show and cruises. My oldest is studying to be a mechanical engineer, and she is starting to think about a career options in the automotive field. My youngest is starting to get the car bug, and we are looking to get a car or truck for her to fix up and drive.” Patrick’s day job is working for a defense contractor as a systems engineer/data scientist. “As a part of my enthusiasm for cars, I started an annual car show at work. I thought it would be nice to have everyone drive their cool cars for all of us to see. We have a cookout to raise money for a local school, and I get my car fix by seeing everyone’s car.” His car guy bio starts when he was in Elementary and Jr High. Patrick raced quarter midgets. “Since then, I have gotten into dwarf car racing with the help of my brother, Dan. Also, for the past several years, I have crewed on Dan Novembre’s Open wheel car, he races up Pikes Peak.” “There are two other guys I work on cars a lot with (Brett and Coop). We call ourselves “Just a Bunch of Friends (JaBoF)”. That is as close as I have come to belonging to a car club. Barbara, Patrick’s mom, originally owned the Cougar shown in J. Patrick Bernard’s photos. “This was the first car she had ever bought on her own. She got it second hand from a neighbor who was a car dealer in the early 1980’s.” The Mercury was her daily driver. Barbara drove it for several years. At the Cougar Nationals in Denver, this Cat won the Daily Driver category. “Because of her job, she needed a car that she could count on in the winter, and this car was becoming a collectable car. My mom was getting nervous that it would get hurt in the snow.” After buying a new daily car, the Cougar was designated for pleasure driving only. “When I moved back to Colorado Springs, my mom needed a place to store the car.” Fortunately, Patrick had

an empty bay in his garage. “She told me that she thought I needed a nice car to take girls out in since at that time my old Jeep was not much to look at
nor did it really make a good first impression. I stored and drove the Cat until purchased.” This Mercury has always been in great shape. “It was repainted once after someone backed into it, and the original 351W engine was rebuilt with a mild cam mated to its stock FMX transmission.” New leaf springs were installed after many years of driving. “Cragar SS wheels were added to get the original hub caps off the car so that they don’t go missing.” Otherwise it has just needed typical maintenance. “We take the Cat out several times a month. I enjoy driving this car, it is smooth and easy. The power steering is such that you never really have to put much into it. For me, this is the car you take out for a cruise. It is powerful enough that you can travel down the freeway and not have to worry about getting in the way. Actually, the Cougar is such a nice drive that I really have to pay attention to the speedo so that I don’t get a ticket ‘cus it doesn’t really feel like it is going too fast. Driving the Cougar is a way to relax and take time away from those things that stress me.”

CRUISIN’ THE OCEAN STATE By JIM WEICHERDING
and it is still going strong today and gaining a lot of traction with our readers.
’m sure many of you reading this article right now are residents of the Ocean State. I am. I live in Northern Rhode Island. Motorhead Magazine was born in the Ocean State and has continued to evolve and expand its content and its reach not only across Rhode Island but other New England states as well.
In fact, other nationally published magazines picked up the series and now it is featured sporadically in those publications for all of their readers. It all started back in the day when all I did was Cruise the Ocean State.
cruise. I see a lot of Hot Rods, Classic and Muscle Cars as well as Show Trucks traveling on roadways, back roads, highways and city streets from the month of April thru the month of October every year and it looks awesome! Flashbacks to the good ‘ole days of Cruisin’
I have had the privilege of being a contributing writer, artist and cartoonist with Motorhead Magazine for the past nine years. It all started not in the Ocean State, but actually in the Bay State, when Louis (Motorhead Publisher) and I first met at Gillette Stadium and Bass Pro Shop Bi-Weekly Thursday Night Cruise Event. I was set up with my Chevy Silverado Show Truck passing out Coloring Books, Magnets, Stickers and Coloring Posters to all of the kids and parents attending that venue. I was also selling and signing autographs on the inside cover of my Paperback Book titled; OUTLAW RUN. Louis introduced himself to me and we hit it off right away. Both having the same passion for the automotive lifestyle and hobby. Louis asked me if I would be interested in writing Feature Articles and drawing CARtoons for the magazine every month. Of course I said that I would be happy to do that for him. He also suggested turning my book, OUTLAW RUN, into a series that could be featured every month for all of his readers. I started writing, OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book Series
Classic Cars, Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Big Show Trucks I’ve owned over the years have covered a lot of Ocean State black top. Pointers on Choosing a Car Bass Amplifier & Power Ratings
GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. Choosing a Car Bass Amplifier So, you’re beginning the process of choosing a car bass amplifier for your new subwoofer system. Your friend said you need at least 1,600 watts and his system sounds great so you shop around. You look at all kinds of amps at different prices. You’re wanting those watts but your wallet has only so much bucks to spend and you’re confused. How do you pick out the right amp? It’s tough, especially because there’s no real way to compare car amps to one another based on what they say, and the sales people just want to sell you what they want or they don’t really know any more about it than you do (you think). So what do you do? Of course I can just say A Custom Car Stereo Center where the salesperson really knows what they’re talking about and no one will steer you wrong.” But I won’t say that. Instead I’ll try to explain what to be aware of to make a good choice. First, realize that there exists the “the big lie” in advertising amp power with many brands of amps. Did you know that in car audio it is actually legal (no federal laws prohibits it) for the manufacturer to lie or deliberately mislead you about the power output of their amplifiers. Many of them do this and some brands do it with such exaggeration that it is laughable if you happen to know what is going on. Why do they do this? It’s simple. The bigger number of watts they can print on the packaging and on the amp, the more likely you are to buy it! So how to begin? Realistically, you need to take into account everything; the power amp, the woofers you are using or still need to buy, and the box (because all boxes are not the same). Also, don’t forget the installation, or the install parts you will need. At A Custom Car Stereo Center we begin by finding out what result you want and what king of woofers you intend to use. When choosing a car bass amplifier we try to match the real power output of the amp with the woofer requirements. It doesn’t make sense to spend all kinds of bucks on killer subwoofers that cost $300 each if you only have $150 to spend on the amp. But you say “The amp says 2000 watts. Isn’t that enough to drive my subs that are rated at 1000 watts each?” No! Remember that these manufacturers routinely over-rate their car amp power output specs, especially in the lower price ranges or with the non name brand amplifiers especially the brands you see at flea markets or in pawn shops or online on some sites. These amps are especially likely to be vastly over rated. As an example, we sell a mono bass amp in a promotional brand that says 1600 watts on it and it sells for under $120. Great deal, right. Yes and no. It’s a good amp for an entry level bass system if paired with the right subs and box, but it won’t come close to driving those expensive subs. Why? Because amps in that price range, regardless of the rating printed on the box actually put out far less than they say. This amp, which can sound good in the entry level bass system puts out somewhere around 75 to 125 real RMS watts per chan-
nel. While that’s not a big number, it is actually enough to make affordable subs sound good and beat relatively hard in an economical system. So while you won’t have 1600 real watts, you will have a decent sounding bass system for a budget price if you’ve properly matched your woofers to your amp and bass box. But it takes experience and intelligence to match the products up right. Most customers will make a mistake doing it or will think that this cheap amp should sound like a real 1600 watts. You don’t get something for nothing. How is the buyer to know how much power the car audio amplifier actually puts out? Sometimes these car amps are independently rated in magazine articles or in on-line articles, but mostly not. Even online forums may be misleading because one person’s experience won’t necessarily apply to your circumstances and you won’t have enough knowledge to know that. That’s why seeking the advice of experienced car audio professionals will make a difference. If the car audio manufacturer is a reputable name brand, then the RMS power ratings are fairly accurate. This makes choosing a car bass amplifier easier. However you will have to read the fine print. Often it is the max ratings that are printed on the amp. Max power ratings are made up figures strictly for advertising purposes. You can assume that many 1000 watt amps put out 75 to 250 real rms watts per channel, and the same for 1600 watt amps. We even have some manufacturers who put 3,000 watts max or 4,000 watts max on their car amps that sell for between $150 and $200. These amps are usually also in the same real power range of 100 to 200 real rms watts per channel, often have small fuses or even fake fuses that don’t do anything but mislead the customer into thinking the amp handles more current than it does. The only difference is some of these amps may be physically larger in size (even though the electronic parts inside the amp take up only a fraction of the available space, the rest of the space being empty!), have neater graphics, and portray the myth that they are more powerful when they’re not. Crazy. The buyer assumes he is getting a super deal and a really strong amp but he isn’t. Sorry Charlie. It ain’t happening. In our store we will give you real world info as to how well the amplifier you are thinking of purchasing from us will work in your system based on our experience with installing it in many other systems. If you need 1,000 watts per woofer to make them hit hard then that’s what we’ll show you. We always recommend an amp we know will work best based on the subs, box and vehicle you have. That’s what working with experienced car audio pros like us will give you. You can’t pick that out of a catalog. How many watts does it take to get good car stereo bass? For beginning lower priced systems you can actually have good bass for the lower power ranges of 70 to 125 rms watts per channel even though most of these amps will say 300 to 1,000 watts on them, as long as the woofers are the right ones for the situation and the sub box is the right design to maximize power output. These are things I will help you with in our store. For stronger and louder bass systems, power goes up
quickly. That’s because the human ear responds to sounds in a logarithmic way. That’s a mathematical way of saying that if you want to double your volume, you will need to quadruple your real rms power output. It is a car stereo industry acceptable standard that a noticeable or significant increase in sound or bass volume requires a doubling of your real output power! Even though the max rating may say 2,000 watts on your amp, if you have only a real 150 watts rms power per channel, changing to a 200 watt rms car amp (that says 3,000 watts on it) won’t help you much especially for the money you’ll spend and it’s not likely to be louder. Choosing a 300 watt rms per channel amp or a 600 watt mono rms car amplifier will double your power and give you a significant increase as long as your choosing a good brand. Obviously, we carry lots of amplifiers. There are differences in brands and amplifier design. Our experience in using and installing these car amps is the best way to get advice on making the right choice. This is a lot different than picking the amp because its price is cheap online or deciding on an amp because your friends have it. For doubling your volume you’ve got to quadruple the output power. If you have a 300 watt mono bass amp this means going with a real 1200 watt rms amplifier to get the desired increase in volume. This will be a big jump in price, will require much stronger subwoofers, maybe a different bass enclosure and may require some upgrades to your charging system, like an additional car battery in the rear next to the car amplifiers. There are other ways of improving sound and increasing volume. Different woofers, a different bass enclosure or subwoofer box design, a charging system upgrade with heavier power cable, extra battery can all make a difference. These are all things we can help you with in our store. We can quickly determine which course of action is likely to bring the biggest benefits for the least cost to you. In short, the more bass power the better as far as increasing volume goes. Picking the best amp for the job depends on real power output, the type of sub woofers being uses, your box design and the vehicle. These are all factors that an experienced store will take into account in making recommendations. If this makes you feel like you could use a little help, it should. Finally, the 2020 Mid-Engine Corvette! MIKE GALLO Well finally, we know for certain what the 2020 Chevrolet Mid Engine Corvette looks like without a doubt. The reveal date was July 18th, 2019 and it finally showed us what the car looked like with-
out camouflage and most importantly what the interior was going to look like. Many enthusiasts have wanted a mid-engine Corvette for quite some time and other loyalists are still on the fence.
It is unclear as of right now if the ZO6 Corvette will have the same body work or be of the widebody variety as it has been. One of the options is the ability to raise itself over speed bumps or what-have-you with a press of a button so that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t scrape the front of the vehicle.

In my opinion the car looks good but I need to see one in person and actually sit in it to give my decision. The interior of the car is absolutely gorgeous. It seems like it is very driver oriented with all of the gauges and everything facing towards the driver. The steering wheel is a new piece and design and looks very good. Also the transmission is an 8 speed automatic with a dual-clutch setup. The new C8 Corvette will not be available with a standard transmission.
