MAKING A DIFFE

By TOM McCARTHY Making a difference for the better in someone’s life is perhaps the best in life any of us can hope for. Let’s face it, life is not easy; some days are hard, other days are harder still. No matter what our own personal struggles are, if you take the time to look at what other people are going through in their life, you might find your problems are pretty insignificant when you look at what others are going through. So of you can make someone else’s life a little bit better, one should consider doing so. When we encounter life’s problems on a daily basis, we have basically two choices: move along as you were before seeing the problem or engage it. For some, perhaps you’ll even take the next step and try to make a difference in someone’s life that is less fortunate than you are. Case in point, one day you’re scrolling along in social media and you come across a hashtag posting of #burnoutsforwyatt and you wonder to yourself “Who is Wyatt and why does he need burn out photos?” Being as this is observed on; a) the internet and b) is viewed on Schmuckbook, one should consider, c) is this story valid or otherwise. Taking things at face value on any social media is foolish to say the least. But within a few clicks, of researching, the facts begin to emerge for people who open their eyes, minds and hearts. Wyatt Spann, in this case is a four year old boy from Alabama and just a matter of months 4| Motorhead Magazine - February 2020

ago he was your average mighty cute little guy puttering around his father Greg’s garage as dad worked on old cars. Wyatt liked to watch dad working in cars, hop into dad’s old jalopies, make cute driving noises and help out when he could. Wyatt just loved cars and being around them, motorcycles too. When dad and his wife Christy took little Wyatt to Talladega for a major NASCAR event, the little boy’s response was obvious “from birth we took him to races, he loved watching NASCAR” commented Wyatt’s father Greg. “At night he’d use his momma’s phone and show me cool cars for sale. He’s always been round cars, going to car shows, that kind of thing.” The toddler was a car nut from the get-go. Then one dark day this family’s life took a turn no one was prepared for. In December of 2018, Wyatt took sick and began throwing up for no apparent reason. So Greg and Christy took their young son to the hospital for a check-up. All seemed fairly okay until the family physician noticed something not right. As the checkout procedure was winding down, the doctor noticed Wyatt’s right eyeball suddenly turn midline for a moment and look to his nose. This was clearly an involuntary eye movement and the alert physician ordered the appropriate tests to be done immediately. When the test results came back the parents were suddenly thrust into a nightmare every parent secretly fears most: cancer of the worst kind. It was advanced, aggressive and was attacking their son. There are close to 171,476 words in the English language in the year 2020, but there are no words to express what this little boy’s parents felt when they received the test results. What followed from that moment on was a full year of more trips to the doctors than to work, more days of dread and darkness, than Continued Next Page

ERENCE days of light and hope. As the year of 2019, passed for this family, life was for the most part a blur. Upon the initial diagnosis of Wyatt having a Medulloblastoma, Greg and Christy were told they may have days to weeks left with their precious son. Their entire world went into a tailspin. Holidays suddenly didn’t matter; days of the week were of little consequence except for the parade of trips to the hospital.

There were a few moments of hope that the surgery or treatments of Chemo would help. But nature was being cruel in this instance. Despite seven extremely diﬃcult rounds of Chemo therapy and several radiation treatments, the cancer persisted and by the end of 2019, there was nothing left to do but help keep Wyatt comfortable in his final days. Considering he was initially given days-to-weeks to live, that he held out for over a year is a testament to this young boy’s spirit. Like his parents, he fought as hard as he could with the help of a determined medical staff who did all they could to make a difference. While the family didn’t really know many members of the medical community before December of 2018, by that date one year later, they certainly came to know many doctors and nurses who each made an impact in their lives. The medical community did all they could to help the family. A young boy who was said to only have days to live beat that forecast by a bunch. Despite the initial diagnoses, hope you see, has no timeline. The doctors and medical science gave Greg, Christy and Wyatt hope in their fight against cancer. Sometimes hope is all someone has to cling to. The blur of 2019 will one day come clearly into focus for the family, likely years from now. As they look back upon it and the things that gave them hope, they will always remember and cherish the memory of a young man, who stepped up with an idea to help make them smile and distract them from the pain of their struggle. His efforts and the racing communities actions combined, accomplished something medical science could not. This the Spann family will always remember. On Friday, January 10th, 2020, Josh Colburn, also of Alabama, came up with the idea to post something on Facebook to help draw attention to the Spann family and their struggle with cancer. Josh created a group page called “#burnoutsforwyatt” encouraging people to post photos or videos of burnouts. His reasoning was “I launched that hash-tag posting in hopes it would help take the families mind off the bad that’s going on. I wanted them to know that they had tons of support behind them.”

41,480 members in just 5 days. This is including 152,100 postings and over 5,000 videos on Instagram, including one by NASCAR Cup Series driver Joey Logano. In five days, over forty-one-thousand people, who didn’t know the Spann family took some time out of their day to help ease the pain the Spann family is enduring. When the postings first went up on Friday, January 10th, Wyatt did get to see some of them and according to his father, he loved it, before his illness took a turn for the worse on the weekend of 11/12 January. Greg Spann, Wyatt’s dad has seen many of the photos and videos. He commented in an interview “It’s such an honor to know the whole world knows my son. TV people, NASCAR drivers, even NHRA racers have sent videos of them doing burn outs for Wyatt. They are building a legacy for him around the world.”

Josh enjoys doing charity work and has helped put on car shows and rides to help special causes like The Wounded Warrior Project, Toys for Tots and children with cancer. It was through these efforts that Josh came to meet the Spann family late in 2018. During 2019 Josh helped organize a “Ridez for A Reason” run from Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham AL, with over 500 entries reported, to support the Spann family.

Forty thousand racers can’t be outside Wyatt’s window decorating and repaving the parking lot at his hospital, but they can be inside his hospital room with him through the magic of the internet and with the help of social media giant Facebook. These people combined are making a difference in the life of a little boy dying of cancer by showing his parents people care about their situation, they respect the family and if a bit of burnt rubber and some expended racing fuel can make the little man smile even for a moment – it was all worth it to make a difference.

While the charity ride was an impressive showing in support of the family, the launching of the Facebook page just blew up. It gathered a staggering

1966 MERCURY COM

By ROB MAY Originally built in Lorane Ohio, this 1966 Mercury Comet Convertible now resides in Glendale, NY. Michael Bilski, married to Sandy, is currently a heavy diesel auto technician for the NYC department of sanitation. He has been restoring cars for over 30 years. “I have had over 40 cars in the last 40 years. My sons Dylan and Joey (RIP 01/2019) would help work on the cars doing minor things.” This Comet was a friend’s wife that died of cancer 5 years before Michael was contacted to check out the car. The Mercury wasn’t in that bad of shape with some exceptions. A family of raccoons got into the garage ripped the convertible top, and they were living in the back seat for 4 months. “My friend said to me. ‘You do a lot for the community and the local children’s hospital.’ He also knew that I was not going to chop the car up and keep 8| Motorhead Magazine - February 2020

MET PACE CAR IN NY Under the hood, the factory 289 with two-barrel carb remains strong. “It is all original, never been a part. I rebuilt the carb myself which still has the tag on it.” Michael has rebuilt the original C4 transmission, upgraded the front brakes to disc, restored the complete power steering system, added A/C, and refurbished the interior along with the top. “I have the bill of sale, it was one of the last ‘66 Comet convertibles off the assembly line with a production date in September of 1966, less then 4k were made.” After seeing a 1966 slot car and dealer promo cars that were white with red pace car decals, Michael had similar decals made for his Comet. “Two pumps of the gas pedal and it starts like a new car, no ticks, real quiet. The Comet rides like a dream, good acceleration, steering is like butter. I slap in an 8-track and listen to some cool 60s or 70s music, just wish I had hair for the wind. While on the highway, most people don’t know what a Pace Car is. They pull alongside, look, then gun their engine like in a race. Because it is a Mercury, most the new Ford Mustang owners give me a nod or toot of the horn as a sign of respect for the old girl.” Both the previous owners of the car have passed, and he knows they are looking down at him while Michael drives around as Santa Claus giving out toys to special needs children, doing tree lighting, and dressed as an elf. “During the tree lighting I must let over 100 kids climb in the car to take family photos. At Halloween, it is time for Trunk or Treat and a parade.” The Comet is also in Memorial parades every year for the Veterans. Of note, she was in the HBO film Rock and Roll Vinyl. “Last year, my mother at age 93 would not leave the house. I asked her to go with a cruise with me. We went to three cruise nights along the New Jersey shore along with my son Dylan. What a night to remember. This car brings the spirit of Christmas joy every year to 1000s of kids, and I spend over 40 hours driving around all the communities in Brooklyn and Queens. I lost my son Michael 11 years ago and my son Joey 1 year ago. That is why I try to bring joy to as many children I can.”

OUTLAW RUN: Ten Years After

It is hard to believe that it’s been ten years of pavement pounding, American muscle car, pedal to the metal, high octane action-packed drama featuring a wanted outlaw behind the wheel of an outlawed Pontiac GTO. Why is it outlawed? Because the government with all of its wisdom felt it wasn’t enough to seep into our daily lives with the Big Brother mentality regarding almost every single aspect of our lives. They now feel that it’s time to take away our freedoms and our rights to drive American Made Muscle Cars, Big Lifted Trucks, Classic Cars and Trucks, Hot Rods and Rat Rods on America roadways. Any vehicle manufactured prior to 1976 is now banned from the streets, back roads, roadways and highways across the entire United States. Even vehicles legally registered are now mandated to install restrictor plates to reduce horsepower and keep fuel economy in standardized checks and balances. Well, one muscle car enthusiast decided to take his gripe to the streets and does in a power plant Pontiac GTO. This oil slick black Goat is one of the fastest muscle cars in New England. Never lost a race on any blacktop or drag strip anywhere since it was built by a couple backyard mechanics with a few dollars to spend and a lot of time to build it.

OUTLAW RUN The Book, Published in 2012 has since then become an ongoing series in magazines just like Motorhead Magazine. Etch is a graphic artist and cartoonist that also specializes in creating handcrafted custom glass and mirror etchings. He also etches vehicle windows and anything with a glass surface. On occasion he is also known to take pen to paper and write when the feeling strikes him to do so. But what he loves most is his muscle car and drag racing. His everyday driver is a showroom condition big block 2003, Chevy Silverado with an 8.1L that can snap your head back like a Pez dispenser. Etch figured out a way to bypass installing the restrictor plate. He never has the truck inspected even though it’s in perfect off the showroom floor condition. He never drives it anymore anyway. MONSTER BUILDS JIM WEICHERDING They are the Taylor brothers. Mike lives here in Rhode Island and owns Taylor Telecommunications Systems and his brother Richie works and lives in Vermont. Personally, I just love Monster Trucks!!! They have got to be the coolest set of wheels on the planet. You can attend Monster Truck Shows all across America throughout the year. It’s a lot of family fun and excitement. In fact, Providence recently hosted a Monster Truck Show this past January 31st thru February 2nd at the Dunkin Donut Center for 3 straight days of family fun and excitement. Mike and his brother Richie are passionate about vehicles overall but they both admit the most fun they have behind the steering wheel is seated

while driving in their Monster Trucks. They both attended and showcased their Monster Trucks at a Buckleupallofus Kids & Family Safety Classic Car & Truck Show hosted at the Advance Auto Parts Store located on Route 44, in Putnam, Connecticut this past summer. Mike named his Monster Truck “Nova Cane” and Richie named his Monster Truck “Bad Pumpkin”. They attend and showcase at events across the region throughout the year and enter Monster Truck Bogs every chance they get. It’s a great challenge to push these vehicles to their limits in front of thousands of screaming and cheering enthusiasts. Most of these Monster Truck Bogs take place in New Hampshire during the year but there are also other New England communities that host these events nearby too. In fact, this coming February 22nd at 10am the Snowbog Vll Monster Truck Event happens in Lebanon, Maine. I’m sure a lot of Monster Truck and Truck Bog enthusiasts and fans will be bundling up in order to attend this annual Snowbog Monster Truck Show showing up from across New England, New York and New Jersey ending up in Maine this month. They also built their own Monster Trucks and that says a lot about these two brothers’ enthusiasm and passion for this hobby. Building Monster Trucks is no easy task to say the least. It takes a lot of time and hard work to take your vision and make it a reality with steel, plastic, chrome and rubber. You won’t see many Monster Builds like the Taylor brothers Monster Trucks. Watch for these cool Monster Trucks this year at New England MudBogs, related Events and even Buckleupallofus Kids & Family Safety Classic Car 16| Motorhead Magazine - February 2020

In the “automotive off-season” I like to flip through Motorhead and see which advertisers could use a friendly visit from us. With almost ten years in circulation we have done our best to promote hundreds of small businesses in the Rhode Island area and we like to show our

gratitude by shining the spotlight on as many as we can. Recently, I had the privilege of checking out 401 Reptiles in West Warwick, RI. And it was an awesome experience. only three years old, I obviously had to wait for my Dad to find the time to make the two-hour ride with me. When I tell you the ride was worth it, I mean the ride was worth it!! From the minute we arrived, 401 Reptile’s main man Jayson rolled out the red carpet for us. The first thing we noticed immediately was how well-organized and nicely stocked it was. Every single tank and display are beautifully laid out, immaculately clean, and we actually got to watch Jayson as

he performed routine maintenance, during which he told us about each animal as he went along. Listening to Jayson tell us about each specimen was actually the second impressive thing we noticed about 401 Reptiles. The staff is knowledgeable, passionate, and extremely experienced!!

So I had a bright idea! Now before you say something crazy it’s not something too nutty. And it doesn’t involve anything illegal although I could be persuaded. Just kidding. So what do you guys think about running a who’s who of dyno numbers in the magazine? What I’m saying is what would you think about having a section that is dedicated to our readers cars that make certain amount of power in different classes that could be listed as the top guys or girls in our pages? For instance we could have a top-10 dyno numbers from naturally aspirated cars and a top 10 from power adder cars such as vehicles with nitrous, turbos or superchargers. Of course your numbers would have to be verified by yours truly with either a video as proof and a dyno sheet from a reputable Dyno facility. And maybe we could put together a day at a certain dyno to have everybody come down and see who can be the king of the dyno for the day. And whatever car puts down the most power in its respectful class would have a full feature done on their car with a model posing with it. Are the gears turning in your minds yet? Let’s be real - who doesn’t like to brag about the numbers their car put down on the dyno? I’m sure some of the street racers probably won’t but maybe they will. Let’s see what happens.

To get a baseline we took the car down to Precision Dyno in Cranston Rhode Island to see what

After getting the car all set up and everything working properly and the car up to temperature, we made a baseline pull and the car responded with an astounding 394 rear-wheel horsepower through the automatic transmission. That’s pretty good considering that the car had only 500 miles on it when it was strapped down. We made a few more pulls and the car basically made close to the same horsepower. One of the seasoned veterans in the car community by the name of Ray Leathers had a good idea to just pull the stock air filter out of the car completely to see what the car would do. And that was just what the car wanted as it put down 408 rear-wheel horsepower for a gain of 14 horsepower at the back tires from simply pulling out the air filter. Talk about free and cheap power.

One of the things that we will be putting on the car first will be a cold air induction. Hopefully this will net us a little more power, but I guess we will just have to wait and see. By JOHN CONTI, SR. I met Rick Carnevale in the late sixties while cruising through the Garden City lot. This talented, young man really stood out of the crowd with his comical, kind gestures and conversation, along with his abilities to construct high performance street racing vehicles, from big block early Chevelles, a wild ’62 Corvette, and later on V8 hogs. His ﬂair for performance and style, three wheeled or four, didn’t matter since it always resulted in a unique end result that the majority of hot rod enthusiasts loved. Having experienced fifty years of motorsports fun and dealing with the trials and tribulations of life, retiring from twenty four years of heavy airport equipment maintenance, as supervisor, a transition was made to acquire a lifetime desire ownership of a ’41 Willys Blown Coupe. The heat was on to acquire a turn-key vehicle at this stage of the game, complete with heat, A/C, a blown small block, Turbo 400 transmission, etc. Rick struck gold in June of 2019 in New Jersey when he found a Willys with 7,000 miles on it in Cape May. Details were discussed, a deal was made, a drive with a friend to New Jersey, and a return trip was enjoyed driving the Willys back to Rhode Island. Some minor upgrades, like power windows, are being incorporated as you read this, since a guy like Rick always has (and still does) put the Carnevale touches on to satisfy his liking. Check out all the photos with the details unique to this Willys, such as the innovative trim at the hood’s lower line, the super straight body, the body gaps uncommon to these cars (if you’ve been around them a while, and paid attention), and

One Motorhead’s Interpretation of Wild round-tube, 4-link, strut suspension, race chassis was swapped in for the older pieced-together frame. The car now went from 3800lbs. to 2800lbs.

The year was 1974. With his Pop’s handme-down ‘63 Olds Dynamic 88 Convertible, Millo began his years of devotion to performance rodding and the eventual Pro-Street scene. Popular Hot Rodding magazine took notice in 1986 and subsequently nicknamed him ‘Trumbull CT Wild Man’. He’s still ribbed for it from time to time.

Millo’s ongoing quest for the most unique hotrod in captivity brought him next to the body, and of course, weight consideration.

At first there were simple modifications while cruising the Point at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. In those days it was easy to pick up a race. It was 1977. A lot of fun and a lot of education came with it. Then came the Merritt Canteen in ‘79, a hot spot for hotrods as well as being the original cruise spot that stemmed all the way back to the early ‘50s. Following now into the early ‘80s Pro Street was emerging, and Millo loved the turn of things. In front of the pack, the Olds would go through a series of performance changes, with a dual quad 425ci Olds engine-install being the first. Married to a T-10 4-speed transmission and a 4.33 posi rear, the car and driver enjoyed much street fun in a time when it was prominent. More than one Vette and Mustang succumbed to the ugly primered ragtop with the question mark on the

hood. Later on and again in front of things, a Dyers 6-71 supercharger was installed, upping the local anti. [Nitrous was toyed with, but not being fully understood by the industry at the time, it was put aside in favor of the roots-style blower]. Next came upgrades to the car itself, following his cousin Richard who ran at the track with

an awesome ‘67 Chevelle. That car ran low 8 seconds with a 4 barrel big block when most cars of that nature were running 9’s. Millo thought that was the coolest and so he went to Lindblad Chassis looking for something ‘different’. This led to the upgrade of the chassis - a narrowed rear, roll cage and suspension. Back in the early 80’s, it was rare to see a mid 10-second street driven car, narrowed rears or superchargers protruding from the engine compartment. Oh, and no hood. The days of the question mark were over and Millo never ran one again. After a few years in this configuration it was time to change again, this time to a supercharged 455ci roller motor. At this point Millo was happy with the occasional trip to English town. That’s when word of mouth led to the photo shoot up at Hammonasset State Park for Popular Hot Rodding magazine. The ‘Wild Man’ was born! So as time went on and as Millo’s interpretation of unique developed, another chassis upgrade was in order. In the late 80’s a full 4130

It was time for a complete body overhaul. This resulted in the need for fiberglass molds to facilitate a one piece nose, doors, deck lid and bumpers, along with, check this out, a one-of-a-kind carbon fiber roof replicating the original convertible top. No one realizes what the roof is really made of until pointed out. Terry Hall was the man responsible for that piece of mastery. The lines and seams follow a real convertible top to the letter. The car now weighed 2600lbs. with a 4 muffler exhaust! The car has been painted different colors over the years, a DP-90 black being the present color with plans for a soft yellow job in the near future. More recently there has been the addition of a dual funny car cage install. Awesome! And all this doesn’t end here. Currently the car is undergoing improvements in the drive-line, with the rebuilding of the supercharged 425ci and installation of Liberty 5 speed. Upon completion it’ll be business as usual, no fear of lighting them up or showing the next wise guy what she has. Both the car and its creator promise to see plenty of street miles along with summer night car shows, cruise nights and, of course, - the occasional foray down the quarter mile. Wild to the Last!

TRI TRACK OPEN MODIFIED SERIES ANNOUNCES 2020 POINTS FORMAT

Best Five of Six Races To Be Counted Towards Championship; Registrations Open For New Season By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK SEEKONK, Mass. -- Tri Track Open Modified Series oﬃcials announced on Wednesday the point standings structure that will be used for the 2020 season. As part of six events, drivers will tally points in each feature. In 2020, the champion will be decided by taking the best five out of six point totals a driver receives. Drivers will no longer be required to attend all six events to score the championship, but with a drop race factored into the totals, the new format allows for a driver to have a miscue, while still being in contention for the title. “This will give drivers a bit more of a buffer in case something goes wrong at one of the races,” Wayne Darling, one of two Managing Partners of the Tri Track Open Modified Series, said. “This is just one of many announcements we will have over the next few months. We’re looking forward to getting the season underway in May.” The entire point fund for the season totals $15,000 in prize money, with the top 15 spots in the final standings set to earn a bonus. The series also announced that registrations for the season are open and rules have been posted to the website. Teams can register and see rules by visiting the all-new Tri Track Open Modified Series website, tritrackmods.com, and visiting the team info page.

THOMPSON, Conn. -- Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park revealed a six-race NASCAR Weekly Series schedule for the 2020 season on Monday. The 2020 slate consists of three major staple events, and three more events that will spotlight NASCAR Weekly Series competitors as part of mid-week, Wednesday night specials in the heart of the summer. The season begins with the 46th annual Icebreaker weekend (April 4-5) and ends with the 58th annual Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing, with three packed days, October 9-11. “We are pleased with the amount of support we are receiving from our dedicated race teams and drivers and we ready to go forward with our NASCAR Weekly Series program for the 2020 season,” Terry Eames, General Manager of Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, said. “We are looking forward to six great events for our dedicated race fans.” Thompson will continue to showcase five NASCAR Weekly Series divisions, starting with the Sunoco Modifieds. The Late Models follow as Division II, while the SK Light Modifieds (Division III), Limited Sportsman (Division IV) and Mini Stocks (Division V) complete the slate. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will headline the Icebreaker weekend, alongside all five NASCAR Weekly Series divisions. Following the Icebreaker, NASCAR Weekly Series teams return to action for their three, mid-week events on June 3, July 8 and August 5. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns for the annual Bud “King of Beers” 150 on Wednesday, August 19, before crowning their champion and helping to seal Thompson’s schedule as part of the 58th annual Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing, October 9-11. Prior to the season, Thompson will host a NASCAR Test & Tune for all safe race cars on Saturday, March 21, with a rain date of March 28. Etch shakes his head from side to side in disgust knowing that all of this is happening because the government can’t leave well enough alone and tries to dictate how we live our lives. Taking away our freedom to drive classic cars and trucks on America’s roadways and forcing us to install restrictor plates to reduce horsepower is un-American. Banning these vehicles from being driven is just wrong and turning a lawabiding citizen with no prior criminal record into an Outlaw because he won’t be pushed around is just wrong! Etch has to find a gas station soon or he’s gonna run out of gas and a whole lotta luck if the OUTLAW GTO runs out of fuel and ends up on the side of the road somewhere. He drives a little while longer and sees a gas station sign over the tree tops about a mile up the road. He slowly continues his drive until he finally reaches that gas station. The jet black GTO rolls up to one of the gas pumps and Etch notices that there signs all read [Self-Service]. “Looks like I’m pumping my own gas. What happened to the good ‘ole

days when a service attendant would put gas in your vehicle, wash the windshield and ask you if they check under your hood?” Etch exits the muscle car now sitting exposed to everyone and anyone driving by or already at the gas station. “Hi, can I have a fill up on pump three extra leaded?” Etch asks the clerk behind the counter with a smile. “That’s a real nice ride you have there buddy. What kind of car is that?” asks the clerk. Etch replies, “A very fast one.” Suddenly, a young boy walks out from behind a door behind the counter. “Wow! Cool car!” said the young boy. He runs out of the gas station front door to get a closer look at the GTO now parked in front of the gas pumps. Etch tosses the clerk two twenties and tells him to keep the change if there is any after he fuels up. Etch follows the young boy outside. He slowly makes his way to the now topped off GTO and sits down behind the steering wheel. Etch watches as the boy he followed out of the gas station stop walking in front of his car and just stares at him with eyes wide open. Etch looks

into his rear view mirror and sees a fully armed tank aimed directly at his prized possession. Sweat starts to run down his face as the little boy starts to run towards the gas station. Etch watches the little boy running as if he was moving in slow motion like in a feature movie just before something horrible was about to happen. Etch now turns the ignition key and starts his classic muscle car GTO not knowing what is about to happen next. He then hears a helicopter arrive overhead hovering above his car. He looks straight up out of the windshield. “You have got to be kidding me!” said Etch. He looks back at the army tank aimed directly at his GTO and then back up out of his windshield at the helicopter. “All of this because I want to drive my car?”

READERS RIDES KELLY YESSAIAN’S 2003 MUSTANG GT CONVERTIBLE

For those of you that know my Dad, Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian, you know that he has an amazing talent for being able to justify all forms of spending on automotive related parts and sometimes even entire vehicles. It’s hard to say if he truly believes his own theories on why he NEEDS stuff but at the end of it all, he somehow always has money to keep his projects alive. This brings me to our featured Reader’s Ride, my Mom Kelly Yessaian’s 2003 Mustang GT Convertible. Picture this; My Mom is six months pregnant with yours truly, she’s feeling pretty good but has some concern about budgeting while she’s on maternity leave. If there’s one thing she needs at a time like this it’s a Mustang GT Convertible, right? Or so says my Dad who somehow thought it was a fantastic idea to buy my Mom a sports car right before she delivered the 50| Motorhead Magazine - February 2020

In my Dad’s defense this car was just simply immaculate. When purchased in August of 2016 it was a 13 year old car with only 48k miles. Inside and out the car was perfect. So, while the timing wasn’t exactly the best, the car itself was a great find. What surprised my Dad was the car was still factory stock, right down to the stock paper air filter and he swore to my Mom that he was going to leave it alone. This lasted roughly 2 ½ days. The first round of modifications were visual only and very simple and tasteful. The headlights, taillights, marker lights, and brake lamp were removed and very lightly tinted, which looks awesome against the factory Zinc Yellow color. After that the factory grille was pulled off and replaced with an OEM Ford Mach 1

grille delete. The stock grille pony was replaced with a Boston Bruins goalie emblem that my Dad fabricated himself. A Mach 1 lower chin spoiler was also bolted to the bumper to give it a more complete look. A Saleen Speedster tonneau cover made a very brief appearance because it covered the backseats to give a two-seater look, not a wise investment on my Dad’s part knowing he had to put a baby seat back there, but it looked cool for the time being. Performance wise, the car is still stock with the only exception being a K&N filter in the factory air box. An MGW shifter was bolted to the factory 3650 transmission with a Terminator shift know that was polished and clear coated to remove the six-speed pattern that doesn’t apply to this particular car. At this point the car looked nice, drove perfect, and handled well. But the factory gap in the wheel-wells was annoying my Dad so an Eibach Pro-kit dropped the car just enough to deliver a more aggressive stance. Amazingly, after the suspension upgrade my “Mother” got a sick set of 18” Shelby Razor wheels for Christmas (exactly what she always wanted). While the joke around our circle is whether or not the car truly belongs to my Mother, she really does love it for ice cream runs and Friday night Cruise Night at Papa Gino’s in Tewksbury, MA. So far, in the past four years my dad only made one attempt to take it to New England Dragway and my Mother put an immediate stop

to that. In all seriousness, it probably wouldn’t deliver extraordinary quarter mile times but then again with a couple modifications, who knows. According to my Mother the only future plans for the car is to have paint correction and ceramic coating done in the spring. However, my dad has a list a mile long to which my Mother sternly

remarks, “Work on your own Mustang and LEAVE MINE ALONE!!!”. While my Dad generally can’t be stopped when it comes to car stuff, I would personally heed my Mother’s warning and stay away from her Mustang. What will the future hold? Only time will tell!! You heard it here first- Xander Y- OUT!!

NJ LINCOLN By ROB MAY Millville, NJ is the home of this 1990 Lincoln Mark VII LSC. CCMC’s Rob May bring us the Mark VII’s story. Owned by Brandon Elliott, father of four: Scott 17 years old, Cassidy 15 years old, Brandie 12 years old, and Tobi 4 years old. He is married to his wife Kristina. Brandon always had a love for cars, he got that from his dad. “We’ve had over 100 cars.” Being something different, the Mark VII caught Brandon’s attention. “I always go for different, and it’s been one of my dream cars growing up. It is a luxury and sports car in one.” Acquired in April of 2018 with 32,000 miles from the original owner, it has 38,000 now. “I love Fox body Mustangs, and this is a Fox body in a Tuxedo!” In terms of maintenance to keep it on the road, the Lincoln had an oil change; replaced fuel pump, front calipers, rotors; flushed coolant; and installed new hoses with thermostat. “While the body is clean and pretty much rust free, it wasn’t garage kept, so 52| Motorhead Magazine - February 2020

When you think about all of the magazines on our national landscape that are folding up and going away you have to wonder what direction automotive magazines are taking in regards to readership on a large scale. I won’t name any names but there are automotive magazines that have been on magazine racks for the past 30-40 years that are no longer with us anymore. What’s happening to these publications and why are they disappearing from store shelves and magazine racks across the USA? Is it lack of readership because content is stale and repetitive in nature? How many times can you read about changing brake drums to disc brake systems before you want to put your head inside a hot oven and

Smaller automotive magazines seem to be doing much better than the larger publications and I think content is one of those reasons why these smaller magazines thrive when the larger magazines fail. Tech, tech and more tech. I’ve been reading automotive magazines since I was a kid. I love the photos of cool cars and badass trucks probably a lot more than reading about what makes them work. I also loved the automotive artwork I saw published in these older year magazines. It was almost like those magazines were about the people reading them. They were able to be a part of the publication even if it was in a small way. Motorhead Magazine is a lot like those older year automotive magazines.

It’s about the readers, the writers, contributors and the photographers.
