Well thank the car gods that summer is finally here! With all this rain I was starting to forget what car shows and cars and coffee were all about. But finally the good weather is here. It’s nice to be able to take your car outside give it a good wash and wax and take it for a nice cruise.

My point is we all love our cars and we might not like somebody else’s but that opinion should be kept to yourself or at least voiced within your head. If you’re one of those people that are rude and like to point out defects in other people’s cars maybe you should stay home on the couch and eat Doritos or something. Just saying! The car shows are meant for fun and to connect with new people and also to look at other people’s vehicles.

I want this summer to be memorable and to be fun and safe for everyone. Just be respectful of other people’s vehicles no matter what they are. Also I will be at as many cars and coffees and car shows as possible this season so if you have any questions or would like to get your car in these pages of our great magazine please feel free to come up and talk to me. Until then, enjoy the summer - as it will be over before you know it. Thanks! What else is nice is meeting new people at car shows...well most of the time anyway. I recently attended a small car show and had the displeasure of being reminded that there are some rude people out there. What I would have to say to you or anybody reading this is please show some respect to people and their cars despite your opinion of such. I take great pride in my car as well as I’m sure you do. While at a car show recently I had a not so nice person point out that he was bothered by a buildup of wax between the bumper and rear quarter of my car. Like really?

Blast from the past: THE 1987 CHEVROLET IROC-Z CAMARO 5.7 MIKE GALLO I can see it now - the 1987 Chevrolet IROC-Z Camaro! This car, in its heyday, was the who’s who of performance! When one of these cars rolled up back in the day the women went crazy and so did the guys of course. You were treated like a celebrity if you owned one of these cars. I remember them being on Reservoir Ave. in Cranston, Rhode Island and cruising up and down the streets in all different colors. I actually had one of these cars but it only had the 305 motor…. yuck. But the ones that were the fastest were the 5.7 motors back by the automatic transmission. These cars were rated at 225 horsepower but had 330 ft lb of torque. And the quarter mile times were around 14.9 seconds which was fast or pretty fast back in the day. One of our close friends has a low mileage example of one of these cars

These cars have become more and more rare and you barely ever see them on the road anymore, unlike their opposition from the blue oval which seems to be readily available on the streets still. One of the fastest versions of the 5.7 IROC around here had nitrous and did its fair share of beating up on cars on the street. I remember being in one of these cars and thinking how fast they felt with the torque just pushing you in the seat. If only Reservoir Avenue in Cranston could talk… imagine the things that it would say that went on in the late 1980s? When is the last time that you saw one of these cars? Do you know anybody that still has one? If so tell them to take it out and bring it to a local car show for us to see. This is just another blast from the past brought to you buy a loyal Motorhead car enthusiast. Until next time my friends.

We find a way to modify ANYTHING!! XANDER YESSAIAN If you know my Dad, Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian, you know that he can’t leave anything alone. Every single thing we own has to be modified in some way. Whether the changes are performance based or just a few exterior styling improvements, my Dad has to personalize every vehicle that sets foot in our garage. And it’s probably killing him that he can’t touch my Mother’s new Ford Explorer because it’s a lease. So it came as no surprise to me when I came home one day and found my Power Wheels “LIL F150” chopped up by a cordless Sawzall and in disarray all over the living room. At this point my Mother just shakes her head in disbelief and walks on by, but knowing my Dad for the past 2 years, I knew he had some bizarre and elaborate plan, even if it was just a Power Wheels project.

When most Dad’s would screw a simple block of wood to the pedal my Dad had to go overboard and custom fabricate a bracket that he bolted to the stock gas pedal then topped it with a Ford Racing Mustang GT interior upgrade style pedal (Ford Performance part # M-2301-C). At this point I was ready to rock, or so you would think.

My Dad’s first “issue” with the truck was that the battery was becoming junk and the truck itself was just a 6V. This was remedied by adding an auto-

My Dad’s next alteration to my LIL F150 came after he saw a few other Power Wheels that came with factory installed L.E.D. lighting and MP3 players. After a trip to the local parts store, a pair of small L.E.D.’s was carefully wired into the front to very brightly light my way if I’m out after dark and as my Dad says “Let people know I’m there”. As for the music aspect of the project my dad is still on the drawing board, only because he’s probably planning some absurd sound system. A normal car battery is fairly inexpensive but also weighs about 45lbs which is pretty bulky, but don’t you worry, my Dad wasn’t going with just a normal battery. His choice of power was a lightweight Braille battery that is available in about a dozen different weights, as light as 6lbs. His choice was Braille’s 11.5lb battery (Manufacturer Part #: B14115FRP8) that had some pretty impressive specs; Pulse Cranking Amps: 904, Cranking Amps: 574, Cold Cranking Amps: 360. My Dad added a 30amp inline fuse then had the mounting issue to address. Here enters the cordless Sawzall I previously mentioned. After a flash of flying plastic shrapnel from under the hood of my LIL F150, my Dad trimmed and mounted a battery tray from a Ford Focus, for an impressive OEM look and a secure place to hold down the Braille battery. “RAINY DAYS AND SUNDAYS” JIM WEICHERDING Well folks, another New England spring has come and gone. It’s oﬃcially summer season now. Another three months of non-stop rain during what should be mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine has once again been a complete washout season.

People I speak with, when we finally get to attend a car show or cruise night, are saying that this region is starting to resemble the state of Florida. The only difference between New England and Florida is that they have warm

Car shows cancelled. Cruise nights cancelled. Community events cancelled. This was the trend all season long. It’s bad enough that this classic car culture struggles to survive every year but to add the element of rain days and Sundays into the mix really makes things hard on all of us automotive enthusiasts. Even area race tracks and dragways felt it hard over the past few months with all of this rain. People wake up to some sunshine in the mornings only to have thunderstorm or rains pass through the region in the afternoons and evenings. Those weather patterns affect our area Cruise Nights. Rain out cancellations were the norm all spring season long just like last year. Last year it subsided in late May. This year, late June. We still have another four months of cruisin left for the year but it’s much better having seven months and not just four months to enjoy our classic car hobby and culture.

Nick Caprio: Ag By MIKE GALLO For most of my life, I have been rooting for the underdog. I have always felt a connection with people that are doubted or written off by society. In my mind, there is nothing better than someone doubting you and proving them wrong by doing

whatever they thought you could not accomplish. That is why this story means a lot to me. I want to share it with as many people as possible. Meet 25 year old Nick Caprio of Cranston, Rhode Island. Nick was born with autism. Like many other people with autism, he was doubted by people from day one. Luckily for Nick, he has two awesome parents that are absolutely unbelievable and do anything possible to help him better himself and overcome obstacles. His parents, Nicole and Jay, are role models in my eyes as for what parents should be. 20| Motorhead Magazine - July 2019

As a child, Nick would cry himself to sleep. This continued until his early years of high school. Kids bullied him and treated him as though he wasn’t “normal”. He was very hurt by it. He also did not speak his first words until he was eight years old. One day, Nick went to the movies with his mother

and father. The movie that he wanted to see was the very first Fast and Furious, which in turn would become his favorite movie of all time. Nick had a love for that movie and still does. It made him absolutely love cars. Fast forward some years. Nick was now in high school where once again he was around people that did nothing but doubt him. Nick was told, as were his parents, that he would never graduate high school because of his disability. They told him, he would never ever be able to drive a car or get his license. Nor would he ever hold a full-time job.

Now this is just a testament to a young man being able to persevere and prove these people completely wrong. Nick graduated from Bishop Hendricken School receiving his diploma and not only that, but he got his license at seventeen years old. This young man has even held a full-time job working for Stop & Shop for the past seven years.

Now if that isn’t impressive enough for you, how about this? Nick has become one of the star athletes for the Special Olympics and currently holds two gold medals that he received this past year at the World Games in Seattle, Washington. He has

When I speak to Nick, I know in my heart that he is one of the nicest young men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He is very humble, soft-spoken and a pure joy to be around. And another amazing thing about Nick, he harbours no ill will towards any of the people that wrote him off in the past. This is a true testament to his character. One of Nick’s favorite actors is Paul Walker from the Fast and Furious franchise. Unfortunately, Paul

I know that they would go to any length possible to help better their son. Nick’s younger brother, Joey, looks up to him and he could not ask for a better role model. I just want Nick, his mother Nicole, his father Jay, uncle Johnny and his younger brother, Joey, to know that they are absolutely awesome people. My hope is that other families will learn from them. The underdog in this story is no longer an underdog. Nick is now an inspiration to me, many people around him

By ED YESSAIAN New England No Time’s Ice Breaker V3 was, without a doubt, the most anticipated event on the 2019 New England Dragway schedule and when the tire smoke cleared, it definitely lived up to the hype. Race Master Mikel Miranda worked tirelessly on sponsorships, rulebook updates, and race day organization and his efforts showed, as the buzz continued long after the event, building towards the October 12th event called THE GUANTLET. For the Icebreaker event, some of the area’s top names campaigned from as far away as Canada, with four classes and dozens of ridiculously fast cars. There were a bunch of beautiful well kept Corvettes and a few other brand cars that were absolutely gorgeous. It was a sunny beautiful day and I brought my son along to witness the show. By JOHN CONTI SR. American sports car enthusiasts have always treasured the made in USA Corvette since 1953, then they made the scene. This gorgeous ’56 is a treasure in itself but boasts an aftermarket coilover tubular independent front suspension to vastly improve the ride, steering and braking qualities over the original. This was one and still is a common negative side of the technology that was available in that era that most early Vette owners all know about. But some purists would never admit it, or haven’t had a taste of today’s engineering qualities incorporated in an early body style such as Vin Moretti’s Corvette. The rear disc brake upgrade also enhances the “whoaaa” power. The interior and trunk are superbly done, as the pictures indicate, with explicit detail to dimension and fit. Speaking of fit, the photos do not do the body’s ripple free ‘glass surface or the fender to door gaps any justice, which were vastly improved from the factory’s “loose” standards. The metallic blue and white color combination appears pleasing to the eye from any angle or any level of light, due to the curvatures of this body from the headlights to the rear bumper as viewed from the side, but is also enhanced with the ﬂatness of the side panels and their ﬂowing, blending design, which is highlighted by the inset lensed chrome tail light bezels from

READERS RIDES Mike’s Monster Mosh! JIM WEICHERDING

Mike likes attending these monster truck mud bogs for a few reasons:

His name is Mike Taylor. He lives in the sticks of Northern Rhode Island. He is an avid Motorhead. He owns some very cool muscle cars, a Harley Davidson and now this Monster Truck he recently purchased in the upstate region.

They are charity fundraising events, all of the kids love the big loud trucks tearing through the mud mosh pits and the great people he meets up with along the way.

Why? Because he loves mud bog mosh pits and the excitement of throwing mud thirty-five feet in the air behind him.

In Fact, I illustrate and provide Mike with cool monster truck Mud Bog Bucky child passenger safety coloring posters he and his friends pass out to all of the kids attending these events. I’m creating a new one right now that features his new monster truck to pass out to the kids at these events and his own family. This event venue is growing each and every summer with an expanding fan base and plenty of monster truck participants arriving wherever they spring up.

Mike started attending Charity Monster Truck mud bogs years ago in the state of New Hampshire with his buddies who are also huge fans of this Motorhead Event Scene now becoming more and more popular every summer. He had always said that one day he would not only like to attend more of these events but also be a participant as well. Mike shopped around for a very long time searching for that “just right Monster Truck” for that reason. This particular truck caught his eye online and after some negotiating with the previous owner he was able to purchase it for himself. He showed me photos of some of the other monster trucks he was interested in purchasing 48| Motorhead Magazine - July 2019

on his cell phone a while ago when we met up at an area cruise night hosted weekly on Wednesday’s in Scituate, Rhode Island. He grabs copies of Motorhead Magazines from me each month

Etch picks up the pace behind the wheel of his wanted GTO and heads towards what he hopes is a safe haven for his prized Pontiac, and of course, himself. He is thinking the only weather pattern that resembles this one is followed by tornadoes and that’s something that he can definitely do without right now. It’s bad enough he has law enforcement chasing him all over God’s creation but now he has to deal with the possibilities of severe weather conditions and tornadoes too? Etch is trying desperately to find a bridge overpass along these New England backroads so he can roll up under it and protect his vehicle but hasn’t found one yet. He is clearly concerned for the welfare of his fleeing classic

muscle car and trying to avoid getting killed in the process. The skies are getting darker and he still can’t find anything on his radio other than static. He hopes that he is at least driving away from any tornadoes that may develop and not directly into the path of one of them, or maybe more than one of them. Either way, he’s worried about his current situation. The skies continue to get darker and Etch is becoming more concerned about the current weather conditions. He continues driving down these New England back roads until he finally sees an old abandoned farm house with a very large empty barn in an open field. Etch slowly and cautiously drives his GTO towards the barn door. He stops the classic

muscle car and gets out to go open the entrance double sliding doors. After sliding them both open he gets back into his GTO and enters the dark and dingy building hoping he can wait out the storm inside unnoticed by anyone in the area. His GTO rumbles into the barn and Etch can see parts of the roof falling to the hay covered ground under him. “This looks safe... Not!” He looks through the open gaps in the roof and watches as the skies become as black as night.

1972 FORD MUSTANG By ROB MAY This 1972 Ford Mustang Convertible, owned by Iyman Musa, has its stable in Johnston, Rhode Island. “My wife, Jennifer, and I have 2 children, 17 years old Iyman Jr and 11 years old Alexandra.” Their children love to help with detailing and maintaining the cars. “Iyman Jr is currently working on restoring a 1978 Mercury Cougar XR-7 with my assistance.” Iyman’s first car was a 1977 Mercury Cougar XR-7. His parents purchased the Mercury just before the Blizzard of ’78. “I had always wanted that Cat to be my first car. When I got my driver’s license in 1992, my parents gave it to me.” He drove the Cougar daily until 2002, when Iyman had the opportunity to purchase the 1972 Mustang Convertible. It was one of the model years he always loved, the 71-73 Mustangs. “The car had approximately 80,000 miles. It was in need of a full restoration which I decided that it would be a great project car.” Purchased in November 2002, the Mustang’s restoration began in Feb 2003. Auto Rust Technicians in Cranston Rhode Island replaced the floors, inner rockers and any

other structural under-carriage parts needing help. “For the next 3 years, I did the rest of the body work, completely detailed the engine compartment, and installed a new convertible top. All of the work was done in my driveway as I did not have a garage at that time. Throughout the restoration, I had great guidance from the members of the www.7173mustangs.com forum which is a great

resource for these Mustangs.” In 2006, the car was repainted to its original color (code 3B) Light Blue. “In 2012, I upgraded the stock 14” rims to aftermarket 15” Magnum 500 with BF Goodrich tires. The stock AM radio was swapped to an OEM 1972 AM 8 Track stereo”. The exhaust is now dual. Brakes were converted from manual 4-wheel drum brakes to power disc brakes.

A Marti Report ordered in 2011 revealed more details. “I originally wanted to change the color, until this report indicated the rarity of the number of Mustangs painted this color (only 320 Mustangs with that paint/trim code in 1972). “All of the factory paint markings and stickers were duplicated to look like it just left the factory.” The engine is a 302 V8 with a 2100 2bbl Motorcraft carburetor now detailed to show quality. The transmission is an FMX Cruise-O-Matic driving a 2.79 standard rear axle. The Mustang is driven as often as the weather permits during the summer months. “We take it out to our local cruise nights, car shows, and to go get ice cream on a nice summer evening with the family. We also go for long cruises on Ocean Drive in Newport RI by the historical mansions to enjoy the beautiful views with the top down. We use the Mustang every rear for the Johnston High School Homecoming parade, which is nice because the school’s color is also light blue. During shows and cruise nights, I always get positive comments about the color or how rare it is to see on a Mustang.”

Haley’s senior project

This 1939 Chevy one ton truck received a total makeover in just one year. Haley Shaw worked closely with her dad (Gordon) and brother (David) to restore this old truck into an amazing party bus. It was completely pulled apart from top to bottom and totally unrecognizable for some time. Making this an ultimate project is custom seating, flooring, and sound system as well as the inspirational color of purple. For Haley, it was a learning experience on time management and all the challenges that come with it. She worked long and hard to get the job done in time for transportation for her graduation, which she passed with flying colors... purple, of course…lol

A year and a half later the very special bus was used in her brother David’s wedding. A bus that has a special meaning for the whole family. Let’s face it, most everywhere that quotes you $150 to $300 is likely using some form or fashion of the same dyed tint.
