July is National Blueberry and Pancake Month 12 Ideas for All Things Blueberry By Meagan Ruffing

My little girl Hannah loves blueberries. My son on the other hand, not so much. With July being National Blueberry Month I thought it would be fun to come up with as many blueberry-loving ideas as I could. After all, what’s not to love about this indigenous flowering plant? Here are 12 kid-friendly ideas for all things blueberry.

1. Blueberry Pickin’ Patch Kids love anything hands-on. Look on the Internet or visit your local Chamber of Commerce to find out where the nearest blueberry patches are. Set a date, load the kids in the car and show them first-hand where to get this delicious fruit.

tots is to freeze a container of blueberries and let her gnaw on them one at a time for instant relief.

4. Flavored Water Add a little oomph to your water and throw in a couple of blueberries for more flavor.

5. Smoothies 2. Blueberry Pancakes It’s Sunday morning and your family is waking up to the smell of delicious blueberry pancakes sizzling on the griddle. If they want to help, drop the batter on the griddle and let your kiddos plop blueberries in the batter (with supervision, of course). This healthy, yummy breakfast will be sure to satisfy everyone’s appetites.

3. Teething Secret Do you have a little one? A great tip for teething 6

Our Kids Magazine | July 2018

Add fresh blueberries to your smoothie for added antioxidants or better yet, add frozen blueberries with or without ice to get that extra icy texture.

6. Rainbow Platter Assemble a cute fruit tray and arrange different pieces of fruit by their colors to make a rainbow. Blueberries can be the ‘blue’ ray in the rainbow and the kids will love that you’ve recreated something so cool! Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

7. Connect the Blueberries Get a pint of blueberries and arrange them one-byone on a piece of construction paper to create a shape (example: circle). Have your son eat the blueberries as he picks them up to drawn a line where the blueberry was. When all of the blueberries are gone, your child has had a healthy snack and he’s learned how to create art out of something edible.

8. Growth Plant a blueberry bush with your children. This will be a great way to teach them how to get their hands dirty while seeing the fruits of their labor for years to come.

9. Ice Cubes Fill up your ice cube tray and let your daughter put one or two blueberries in each cubicle. Put them in the freezer and voila! Throw them in your next glass of water and now you have a pretty and yummy drink.

10. Jam Who doesn’t love jam? Find an old family recipe or scope one out on the Internet. Do most of the leg work but let your kids get involved in the kitchen by having them ‘measure’ out the blueberries to put in the pot for boiling down with sugar and water.

11. Road Race Let your son line up blueberries on the floor or table to make ‘roads’ where his matchbox cars can drive along. He’ll love the idea of building his own racetrack and you’ll love the extra time to get things done around the house!

12. Fun Facts Let school-aged children get on the computer and see how many facts they can find about blueberries. This is a great way to teach them about taking something from the environment and picking it up apart to learn all that they can. Be sure to try some of these ideas for National Blueberry Month. Your kids will have a blast learning about all things blueberries and you’ll feel good knowing that they’re eating a healthy and nutritious fruit. EDUCATION GUIDE

STEAM Projects for Steamy Summer Days By Sara Barry

School’s out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean learning has to end. Summer days are the perfect time to explore STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math—with activities perfect for the weather. So keep your cool, keep it fun, and keep learning.

Sink, Float, Make a Boat When it’s hot outside, there’s nothing like water play to stay cool. Fill a kiddie pool (or a large storage tub) with water. Collect a variety of objects that you don’t mind getting wet: ■■water bottles (full and empty) ■■keys

■■rubber duck or other small toys ■■apple

■■spoon

■■egg (raw or boiled) ■■cork

■■bar of soap

8

Our Kids Magazine | July 2018

Have kids predict which items will sink and which will float. Then test each object. Were there any surprises? Encourage kids to speculate why some float and some do not. Then using what they’ve learned about what floats and what doesn’t, have kids make boats from a variety of recycled materials. Then they can test their boats and make adjustments for flotation and stability. Use the boats in races or a boat parade with prizes for the most colorful, uniquely shaped, innovative use of materials or any other criteria you come up with. Summer Reading Suggestions: ■■Things That Float and Things That Don’t by David

A. Adler provides simple explanations about density, sinking, and floating for young readers. ■■Captain Kidd’s Crew Experiments with Sinking and Floating by Mark Weakland uses a pirate story to help kinds understand density. ■■In What Floats in a Moat by Lynne Berry, Archie the FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

EDUCATION GUIDE Goat has to built a boat to cross a moat, and has some false starts before getting one that works.

Wish on a Shooting Star Summer is a great time for star gazing—and meteor watching. The Perseid meteor showers are the perfect time to do some night sky viewing. In 2018, the best time to view the Perseid meteor showers is late evening to dawn on August 11, 12 and 13, though you may catch activity from July 13 through August 26. The moon this year will be a crescent during the peak of the Perseid showers, allowing for even better viewing. Even though warmer evening temperatures make waiting and watching outside much more enjoyable than winter sky viewing, it can still be cool, so cozy up in a sleeping bag and have a warm drink handy. Lawn chairs can make waiting more comfortable. Watching for meteors takes patience. Even on a peak night, you may not see much. Keep expectations low and enjoy being out at night and observing the night sky. There is plenty to see even if meteors aren’t streaking across the sky. Meteors are often referred to as shooting stars. Have fun making your own shooting stars and wishing on them with this craft.

OPEN HOUSE Come see why more families are choosing Brooks!

■■Collect card stock, tissue paper, scissors, glue, and a

pen or marker. ■■Cut large stars out of card stock. ■■Glue narrow tissue paper strips to the bottom of the star. Let it dry ■■Write a wish on the star. ■■You can stop here and hang the shooting stars, or you can fold the star in half along the top point. Fold each side back halfway to make the star look something like a paper airplane. ■■Take your stars outside and give them a toss. Watch them shoot through the sky. Summer Reading Suggestions: As you look up at the night sky, you might think about Henrietta Leavitt. Look Up! Henrietta Leavitt, Pioneering Woman Astronomer by Robert Burleigh tells the story of this early female astronomer. What happens when a meteorite lands? Find one answer based on a true story about what happens when a meteorite lands in a small town, in Meteor! by Patricia Polacco. Wishing on a Star by Fran Lee is a good introduction to constellations and night sky watching for young stargazers. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

EDUCATION GUIDE Boom! Flash! Exploring Summer Storms

Thunderstorms can happen any time of year, but are most common during summer months. Whether your kids are frightened or fascinated by thunderstorms, understanding how they work is enlightening. Thunderstorms form when cold and warm air masses meet. In the clouds, static electricity builds up until it is released as lightening. The sound we hear when that happens is the thunder. One way to learn about weather is simply to observe. Do take care, though. If you see lightening or hear thunder, take shelter in a fully enclosed building or car with the windows closed. Try tracking your weather for several days, especially when storms are predicted. Some things to observe: ■■Does the temperature change before or during a storm? ■■What do the sky and clouds look like? ■■Does the wind pick up or does the air get still? ■■What kind of precipitation (rain, hail?) do you get, if

any?

■■Which direction does the storm come from?

■■How long does it take to get to you? How long does it

last?

■■Use a stop watch to check the time between seeing

lightening and hearing thunder. (Do this from a safe space inside.) For every five seconds, the storm is about a mile away.

Use dark paper and white, yellow, silver, or pale blue paint to create a lighting storm on the page. Lightening can take different shapes. Observe safely from indoors and show what you see in your art. Then try creating a

Patriotic Crafts and Activities By Tiffany Doerr Guerzon

Do you need a fun activity to keep the kids occupied during summer break, or a game for your next BBQ? Learn about science with milk fireworks, create fireworks paintings, and decorate everything from your table to your flip flops in the theme of Americana.

add the glitter a little at a time, putting the cap back on in between additions to see if you have enough sparkle. Once you are satisfied with the contents of your bottle, dry the threads on both the neck of the bottle, and the inside of the cap. Put a line of hot glue on the threads of the bottle and screw on the lid to glue it into place. Once the glue is cooled, add another layer of protection by wrapping duct tape around the cap securely. Tie some ribbon or garland onto the neck of the bottle for extra bling if you like.

Patriotic Snack Bags

Patriotic Sensory Bottle

Supplies: ■■Empty water or soda bottle with the label removed. (Single serving size) ■■ Corn syrup ■■ Glitter ■■ A variety of tiny objects to add to your bottle. I used small plastic jewels, foam stars, and Fun Loom Bands. ■■ Hot glue gun ■■ Duct tape ■■ Optional: Ribbon or garland for tying around the neck of the bottle. Directions: Remove the bottle lid and put the objects you have chosen inside the bottle, except for the glitter. Fill the bottle 1/3 full with corn syrup. Next, add warm water, filling the bottle to about half an inch from the top. Screw the cap on tightly, then tilt the bottle back and forth and observe the objects floating in the solution. If you don’t think there are enough objects, add more until you get the effect you desire. Next, take off the cap and 18

Decorate plain resealable plastic bags as an activity, or fill with yummy snacks to hand out as favors at your summer bash. Supplies: ■■Quart or snack-sized resealable plastic bags ■■Duct tape in patriotic designs and/or colors ■■Scissors ■■Plastic cutting board

Directions: Lay your plastic bag flat on a plastic surface like a cutting board. Tear off a strip of duct tape, slightly longer than the width of the bag. Starting at the top of the bag, line up the lengthwise edge of a strip of tape with the lower edge of the zipper closure. Smooth the tape horizontally onto the bag. Repeat with additional strips of tape until the bag is covered. Trim the extra tape so that the edges of tape are flush with the edge of the bag. Flip the bag over and repeat on the other side.

Fireworks in Milk Science Activity Supplies: ■■Milk ( 1% or greater, the more fat the better) ■■Liquid food colors ■■Liquid dish soap ■■Q-Tips ■■Plate or shallow dish, such as a casserole dish or cake pan Directions: Pour about one half inch of milk into your dish. Add four drops of each food color (next to each other, not on top of each other) into the center of the milk. Now, the fun begins! Dip a Q-tip into the dish liquid, then let the kids gently touch the tip of the detergent-soaked Q-tip to the food color. Watch the colors disperse, making firework-like patterns, and repeat by touching the Q-tip to different areas of the milk. Explanation: Milk is composed of fat and water. The dish liquid is made up of two molecules; one is hydrophobic (hates water) and one is hydrophilic (loves water). So when the dish detergent hits the milk, one molecule chases the fat in the milk and one molecule attaches to the water in milk, causing the movement of the colors. After a few minutes, the molecules will stop moving. Then you can pour out your colored milk and try again!

Painted Cut Offs

This is a fun project to do with cut-off jeans or denim shorts. Supplies: ■■Denim shorts ■■Paintbrush ■■Fabric paint ■■Stencil of stars or American flag, and foam stencil brush (if desired). Directions: It’s a good idea to sketch out what you would like to paint on the shorts on scratch paper before getting started. Pre wash the shorts if needed. Lay newspaper on your work surface and put the shorts on the newspaper. Paint your design onto the shorts. Try stripes, polka dots, or even stars!

Balloon Bop

Kids love to hit balloons back and forth. You can make your own game from inexpensive materials. Supplies: ■■2 paper plates (red, white, and blue if possible) ■■Duct tape ■■2 paint sticks, or one wooden yard stick, cut in half ■■Balloons

of one flip flop, place the middle of a length of ribbon under the strap. Next, tie the ribbon on with a double knot. As you work your way to the other end of the strap, continue adding ribbons in this way until the strap is covered. Follow the same process with the other flip flop. Now, fluff the ribbons with your fingers and trim to the length you desire. Note: If your child has sensory issues, using flannel material, instead of ribbon or tulle, will be softer on the feet. Cut the material into one-inch wide strips, then proceed as above.

Tabletop Rockets ■■These cute centerpieces are so easy to make!

Directions: Tape a paint stick onto the back of the paper plate. You want the end of the stick to be attached at the midpoint of the plate. Repeat with the other plate. Blow up balloons. To play: Toss a balloon in the air and let the kids hit the balloon back and forth, holding the stick of the balloon bopper like a tennis racket.

■■Supplies:

■■Styrofoam cones in varying sizes

■■Yarn, ribbon or tulle in bright colors ■■Straight pins

■■Star floral spray

(see example with picture below) These are decor items that can be added to flower bouquets or gift baskets. These are called glitter picks in some stores.

Firework Flip Flops

This project can turn a plain pair of dollar store flip flops into a fashion statement! For this pair pictured, I used a combination of grosgrain ribbon and sparkly tulle, both from Walmart. Supplies: ■■Pair of flip flops ■■Ribbon, tulle or flannel in red, white, and blue ( I recommend at least three colors) ■■Scissors Directions: Cut your ribbon or tulle into three-inch lengths. Next, lay out the different colored ribbons on your work surface and arrange in the order you want the colors and patterns to be tied onto the flip flops. Starting at the outer edge of the strap

Directions: Using a straight pin, attach the end of your ribbon at the bottom edge of the side of the cone. Now, wrap the ribbon or tulle around the cone from the bottom up, overlapping the ribbon slightly over the previous row to completely cover the sides of the cone. Leave the tip of the cone uncovered, so that you can stick the wire decor into the styrofoam in a later step. Once you have wrapped the cone to your satisfaction, cut the ribbon, and secure the end of the ribbon to the top edge of the cone with another straight pin. Using scissors, cut several wires from the foil spray decoration. Stick the ends of each wire into the top of the cone. Arrange the wires until you have a beautiful burst of colorful fireworks. These activities are fun for the Fourth of July holiday, or anytime this summer--because red, white and blue never goes out of style!
