Dads Just Want To Have Fun 33 Unforgettable Father’s Day Outings By Christina Katz

Before you start preparing that traditional breakfast in bed for dad on Father’s Day, consider some of these outings first. If dad is itching for an adventure this year, why not try one or even a few of these family activities? And don’t forget to snap photos of everyone enjoying dad’s special day because this is going to be his best Father’s Day yet.

1.

High Score Dad Whether dad likes vintage video games like Pac Man and Space Invaders or prefers a few rounds of Skee Ball and pinball, a trip to the arcade is a sure-fire way to light up the day.

7.

Biscuits & Gravy Dad Let’s face it, one of the best places to go on Father’s Day is out to brunch. Hit dad’s favorite greasy spoon or surprise dad with a new-to-him restaurant you think he’ll love. Reservations are a good idea.

8.

Angler Dad If dad loves fishing, don’t try to worm your way out of it. Dig him up some worms on Saturday or buy some at your local pet store. Then haul out or borrow the gear, and off to the nearest body of water you all go!

9.

Soaring Dad Remember the song, “Let’s Go Fly A Kite” from the Disney film Mary Poppins? Stop at the store on your way to the best kite-flying park in town and you’ve got a great impromptu Dad’s day excursion.

2.

Tomahawking Dad Some dads love nothing more than a nice long game of Frisbee. So surprise him with a new disc to add to his collection and then head to the nearest Frisbee golf course. Check online for the location closest to you.

3.

Slip And Slide Dad If you are fortunate enough to live near a water park, you’ve got a whole day of splashinggood fun ahead of you. Arrive early to beat the long lines.

10.

4.

Root, Root, Rooting Dad Take dad out to the ball game, take him out with the crowd. Buy him some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and he will smile all day while he cheers for the home team.

11.

River Rat Dad Some dads are just water-lovers. If your dad is one of them, he’ll probably love of a day of kayaking, rafting or tubing. Be sure to wear a helmet when necessary.

5.

12.

3-D Dad Surprise dad with the 3D or Imax movie he’s most excited to see this summer. Or head for the nearest drive-in movie theater. There are 338 locations left in the US and you can find them listed online by state.

6.

Rappelling Dad Does dad love an intense challenge? If so, rock climbing at your local climbing center is a great idea. Be sure to make reservations in advance. 6

Our Kids Magazine | June 2018

History Buff Dad Is a historic destination or reenactment event within driving distance? If so, pile everyone in the car and travel back in time together.

Lip-smacking Dad Barbeques are great, but today is dad’s special day and he’d probably like to be waited on rather than cook. So what’s it going to be: steak, BBQ, pasta? Go ahead and indulge dad with a fancy dinner on his special day.

13.

Place Your Bet Dad Naturally you don’t want dad blowing his paycheck at the track every month. But since he’d never do that, a trip to the horse races with the Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

whole family to place five-dollar bets and cheer your head off makes for a memorable day.

REGISTER AT WWW.PARKHILLS.ORG

14.

Breaking Away Dad You don’t have to own enough bikes for everyone in the whole family. You can always rent bikes for the day or borrow bikes from your neighbors for a whole family ride. Stay hydrated and bring snacks.

15.

Putting Dad For some dads, there is no greater joy than sharing a love of golf. If kids are young, mini-golf is a great option. When they get older, try the driving range, and eventually, the whole eighteen holes.

16.

Paint-splattered Dad For dads with tweens and teens, an afternoon at the paintball park can be thrilling, not to mention colorful. Just remember the wear safety gear.

17.

Sunscreen Dad Even if dad doesn’t surf or even Boogie board, he may still long for a relaxing day at the beach. If visiting the coast is not an option, how about a lake or riverfront. Dads and water do mix!

18.

Education-junkie Dad Have you noticed the proliferation of local classes in your community? Why not sign the whole family up for a class you can take together? Search for “family learning” + your location and see what sounds intriguing.

19.

Cowboy Dad If your dad loves the movie City Slickers, maybe it’s time for that family trail ride. Wear jeans and sturdy shoes and get ready to sweet talk your ride.

20.

Bouncing Dad Even though he might not be prepared to do flips, dad might be up for an afternoon at the local trampoline park. Jumping is fun and relaxing. Call ahead to discover the least-crowded times.

21.

Bull’s Eye Dad Does your local sporting goods store have an archery gallery? If not, find an archery store in your area and head on over for a few pointers before purchasing a bow and arrow set to use in your yard.

22.

Tire-screeching Dad Even though kids may not be old enough to drive, they can have fun racing dad at the nearest Go Kart destination. Search for both indoor and outdoor options and then rev ‘em up!

23.

Everybody Now Dad Outdoor concert opportunities abound in the summertime! Grab tickets ahead to attend a traditional concert. Be sure to choose a singer or group that will get dad grooving. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

Stomping Dad Looking for a last-minute adventure for Father’s Day that won’t break the bank? Hiking is perfect. You can either do a short afternoon hike or take more time preparing for an all-day excursion. Whichever dad prefers.

25.

Puddle Of Dad Do you have a day spa or a local massage center near home? If so, sign dad up for some treatments. If the place is family-friendly, everyone can join in. Otherwise, grab a bite while dad gets spoiled.

26.

Top Down Dad How convenient, vintage car shows often fall on Father’s Day. If dad is a car buff, plan a day trip to a show in your region. Wash dad’s car before you go.

27.

Helping Hands Dad If dad loves to volunteer, why not pitch in as a family on Father’s Day? Charities often need more support during the non-holiday months. Contact your favorite for ways your family can contribute.

28.

Roadrunner Dad Lace up those sneakers and get ready to pound some pavement with dad. Families who run together can work their way up from short races to long over the years.

29.

Down To Earth Dad If dad has a green thumb, why not take a garden tour for Father’s Day? Or take dad to the biggest nursery in your area to select plants for the season.

30.

Strike-loving Dad Of course, dad doesn’t need to use the bumpers, but younger kids can. This means even young children can enjoy an afternoon or evening of bowling with dad.

31.

Round And Round Dad For many dads the amusement park is a family favorite. How many times can you go on each ride before the park closes? You’ll have fun finding out.

32.

Browsing Dad If dad is the thoughtful type, his idea of the perfect adventure might be a literary roam through the stacks of your largest local bookstore. Give him a gift card and let him browse, while everyone else hangs out in their favorite section.

Up, Up And Away Dad If you are looking for an unforgettable Father’s Day experience, consider taking the family up in a hot air balloon. Of course, this adventure is weather-sensitive, so be schedule-flexible for the safest experience. PARTY DIRECTORY Games: 1. Cave People Stomp – Blow up balloons and attach to paper plates with tape to hold them in place. You can add faces, crazy yarn hair or paper arms to make them look like cave people. On go, the dinosaurs try to stomp as many cave people as they can. Add a slip of paper inside each balloon so the boys can collect them for a prize. Optional: Make dinosaur feet out of cardboard ahead of time and tie them to the players’ shoes before they stomp.

Stomp, Chomp and Roar! It’s a Dinosaur Party! By Pam Molnar

Since the Caveboy days, dinosaurs have been a fascination among young boys. Dinosaurs were big, destructive, loud and most likely chewed with their mouth open. What’s not to like? If you have a Caveboy at home, treat him to a dinosaur themed birthday party that will be remembered for the next million years.

Activities: 1. Dino Egg Hunt – Fill plastic eggs with dino stickers, stamps, toys or numbers for larger prizes. Oriental Trading and Party City offers a large selection of dinosaur items. Hide eggs around the room or outdoors if the weather is nice. Try assigning egg colors to make sure the boys get an even number of prizes. 2. Make your own Fossils –Use 1 cup of used coffee grounds, 1/2 cup of cold coffee, 1 cup of flour and ½ cup of salt. Mix well. Divide into four pieces and flatten out with hands. Press shells, sticks, leaves, plastic dinosaurs, etc. into coffee ground fossil dough. The guests can take them home in plastic bags. Let dry 3-4 days before handling. 3. The Excavator – Mix Plaster of Paris and add to old plastic containers or paper milk cartons. Insert dinosaur toys to be excavated and let dry overnight (or per directions). Let kids use small hammers to chip away and discover what is inside. Don’t forget eye protection! 10

Our Kids Magazine | June 2018

2. Hungry Dinosaurs – For this game, you will need a skateboard for every two players, oven mitts (sets are available at the dollar store) and a gross of bouncing balls (Oriental Trading - $11). The players team up with one boy on the skateboard on his belly and the other boy behind him holding his feet like a wheelbarrow. The balls are placed on the ground in the middle of the room. The player on the skateboard puts the oven mitts on. On go, the teams will go back and forth into the circle trying to collect as many balls as they can get. When your hands are full, come back to empty them into a bowl before going back in again. Play the game twice so each boy gets to be the dinosaur. 3. Hot Lava - Put red plastic table cloths on floor. Set up an obstacle course made of bricks, stools, pillows etc. The boys can climb, step, jump on the items, but cannot step on the hot lava. You can play again by using only flat papers to step on and have the boys play in teams – one is blindfolded while the other gives directions to help his partner through to safety.

Food: 1. Chicken (baby pterodactyl) legs or wings are a real crowd pleaser for caveboys! You can make your own, order take out or prepare frozen ones. 2. Mini nacho volcanos – Use a 12-oz. brown paper cup (Amazon has coffee cups that will work great) and cut off the bottom half inch. Place bottom side up and insert a 5-oz. plastic snack cup inside. Fill cup with red salsa or nacho cheese and spill some over the edge of the volcano. Serve on an individual dish surrounded by dinosaur scales (chips). 3. Lava cake – Make your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe as directed. Allow cupcakes to cool. Using a paring knife, cut out the center about halfway into the cupcake preserving the center piece. Fill with hot fudge sauce or Nutella (mixed 4:1 with milk). Replace the top and cover the cupcake with piped red icing. 4. Dino Juice – The easiest version of this is to buy Hawaiian Punch Green Berry Rush flavor. However, Pinterest is full of ideas for making your own green punch. Kapow! Save the Day with a Superhero Party Plan By Pam Molnar

Superheros have been inspiring boys and girls for years and this generation is no less captivated. If your child is one of the thousands of kids who want a Superhero themed birthday party this year, have no fear. We will help you save the day with this Super-b party plan!

Games:

1. Villains and Supers – For this game, you will need 10 plastic cups per player. Spread out the cups in an open area with half of the up and half of them down. Split the players into two teams. On go, the Villains turn them up, and Supers turn them down. At the end of two minutes, the winner will be the team with the most cups in their direction. 2. Don’t Get Caught in the Web – Use crepe paper to make a web in a hallway or small space. Make the web challenging by overlapping strands. Time the players to see who can make it through the fastest without touching or ripping the web. 3. Knock Down – Print out faces of the Superheros’ nemesis like The Joker or Lex Luther and glue them to the front of cups or cans. Arrange them in a pyramid like a carnival game. Have the players use blue Frisbees (decorated like Captain America’s shield) to try to knock the villains down.

4. How Strong is the Hulk? – Have kids wear green oven mitts or Hulk hands and try to pop balloons using only their hands. It’s a lot harder than it looks. 5. Who am I? – Print out pictures of both Supers and Villains and glue to index cards. Give the guests an elastic headband and tuck the cards inside (facing out) on their forehead. Players have to guess who they are by asking yes or no questions. 6. Got muscles? – We all know Superheros are strong. Have the kids wear a Men’s xl or 2xl shirt with sleeves. Blow up several different sized balloons. On go, two teams race to see how many muscles they can add to their Superhero. The winner has the biggest muscles.

Crafts:

1. Cape – Despite what Edna Mode from the Incredibles says, you just feel more like a Superhero when you wear a cape. Purchase colored men’s t-shirts – one for each guest. Cut down the sides of the shirt and lay flat. Remove the sleeves. Cut along the seam of the shoulder to the neck. Leave the neck intact, but cut off the front part of the shirt. You are left with a cape that can be slipped over the kids’ head. Decorate with scraps from the other shirts using hot glue. 2. Canvas Painting- This can be done one of two ways. Like the sip and paint shops, walk the guests through step by step to create a Superhero logo. Another way to do this is to paint the canvas a solid color ahead of time and tape a logo shape on the dried canvas. Place the canvas in a box to keep the mess to a minimum and have the kids drizzle or splat paint on top. Remove the tape when dried to reveal a cool Superhero logo design. 3. Paracord Bracelet – Use

Be a Pro at the Beach This Summer By Sara Barry

From sandcastles to swimming, there’s nothing like a summer day at the beach. If you’re just popping down for a quick swim to cool off, you don’t need much more than a bathing suit and towel. But if you’re going for the day, planning can make or break the trip. Here are seven things to consider, from getting there to getting home, for your best beach day yet.

the beach. Everyone will be happier if you make sure they’re drinking enough. Freeze water bottles over night to help keep drinks cold. Fruits, like grapes or watermelon chunks, help hydrate too. Add some napkins or wipes, cups (if you’re bringing a jug of drinks), and a trash bag to your lunch stash.

Plan for parking

Apply sunscreen before you leave. You’ll want to reapply after swimming or after a few hours, but getting that first coating on before everyone is sandy is a good starting point. It also makes it less likely that you’ll forget in the chaos of setting up when the kids are begging to go in the water. Don’t forget to put the sunscreen in your bag after applying at home. You’ll want it again! Sun hats and light long-sleeve t-shirts or swim shirts help protect against sun too. Consider an umbrella or beach tent, especially of you have little ones who might nap.

Is there ample parking? Do you need to get there early to get a spot? Will you need to pay for parking? You don’t want to show up at the beach with a car load of kids and find that you’ll have to schlep your stuff five blocks or start to pull into the parking lot only to find you have no cash.

Feed the troops

Even if there is a snack bar or other food available at the beach, it may be cheaper and easier to pack a lunch. Set expectations for your kids ahead of time. Letting kids know “We’re bringing a lunch and drinks, but we can all get an ice cream in the afternoon” can cut back on repeated requests. If you’re getting an early start, packing lunch the night before keeps the morning running smoothly. Have a list of everything that has to go in the cooler so you don’t forget essentials. Bring an extra sandwich in case somebody is really hungry or a sandwich falls in the sand (it happens). It’s easy to get dehydrated during a long day at 16

Our Kids Magazine | June 2018

Prepare for the sun

Sit and play.

Bring a towel for each person for resting or drying off after swimming. A larger blanket for lunch or to put a baby on can be handy. Chairs are bulky but worth it for the comfort factor. There are lots of great beach toys out there. Bring enough to keep it fun without getting overloaded. A bucket and a shovel for each young child cuts out fights. Older kids may want boogie boards, skim boards, or masks and snorkels. Games like paddleball

Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

or Frisbee are fun and don’t take up a lot of room. A book or travel game can be good for down time.

Get it onto the beach.

That’s a lot of stuff, right? If you go to the beach often, a beach buggy that you can load up with all your gear might make sense. If you get there once a summer, it’s probably not worth it. Instead, divide and conquer. If you want kids to carry things, make sure you have kid sized bundles. Maybe each kid carries their own towel and bucket or an older child gets the drink cooler while you grab the food and chair. Maybe one adult takes a load of stuff and the kids, while the other parks and schleps the remaining gear.

OPEN HOUSE Come see why more families are choosing Brooks!

Potty preparedness

If you’re going to be at the beach all day, everyone will need to “go” at some point. If you have young kids who need a potty when they need it, make sure you know where the bathroom is (hopefully it’s not too far away). Have a plan for if you need to go to the bathroom. Does every one go? Is there another adult to watch kids who don’t need the potty? Do you have rules—everyone out of the water—while adults are limited? If you have kids in diapers, make sure you have plastic bags to tie up dirty diapers—and don’t forget to take them with you. Nobody wants to find dirty diapers on the beach.

End of the day

Consider staying late. Some of the most pleasant hours at the beach happen in the late afternoon and early evening when the crowds are leaving. You might save yourself some time sitting in traffic too. Just make sure you have enough snacks or a dinner plan—and maybe a long sleeve t-shirt for everyone in case it starts to cool off. You’ve had a great day at the beach, but every one is tired and maybe a little crabby. It’s time to pack it up. If you’ve got a long drive, try to make every one more comfortable. If showers are available, rinse off sand, salt, and sunscreen before the ride home. If not, try rinsing feet in a bucket of water. Sprinkle a little baby powder to help brush off sand. Get out of wet bathing suits and into dry clothes. Take a deep breath of that fresh, salty air and enjoy—you’re a beach pro now. Sara Barry is a freelance writer from Massachusetts. She grew up at the beach and spends as much time as she can there every year.

The exhibition focuses on the creation of the mummies, their role in ancient Egyptian religion, and their burial. In collaboration with the San Antonio Zoo and the Radiology Department at University of Texas Health San Antonio, the mummies underwent modern scientific methods of examination including X-ray imaging and CT scanning, which made it possible to understand and analyze the contents of the mummies without unwrapping them. These tests and their results will be featured in the exhibition. Exhibition runs through July 1, 2018 and is free with Museum admission. San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones Ave. 210-978-8100. www.samuseum.org
