We must love ourselves before we can love others and offer kindness to the world around us. This month is all about love, so what better way to expand our love for ourselves and others than by learning how to practice Loving-Kindness meditation and sharing the experience with our children? Also called Metta or compassion meditation, Loving-Kindness meditation is one of the most commonly practiced types of meditations out there. Quite simply, it is the practice of directing positive thoughts and well wishes to ourselves and others. It may seem odd at first, but this article gives you the four phrases to start your practice, the benefits and how to share this practice with your kids. playgroundmagazine.com/lovingkindness-meditation

Greta's Message

Sharing Greta Thunberg's Story Through Children's Books Teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg is all over the news lately, from being named Time Magazine's 2019 Person of the Year to her low-carbon footprint sail across the Atlantic to speak at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25). We put together a round-up of children's books about Greta's inspiring story to share with your children.

Greta and the Giants Written by Zoe Tucker Illustrated by Florida-based artist, Zoe Persico Ages 4–7; Printed on 100% recycled paper

Other Children's Books About Greta Thunberg… • Greta’s Story: The Schoolgirl Who Went on Strike to Save the Planet By Valentina Camerini • No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference By Greta Thunberg • Our House Is on Fire: Greta Thunberg’s Call to Save the Planet By Jeanette Winter • We Are All Greta: Be Inspired to Save the World By Valentina Giannella

"

Inspired by Greta Thunberg's work to bring awareness to the world's climate crisis, this vibrant and thoughtful story introduces the importance of consciously taking care of the world around us. Told in allegory, this lovely picture book shares Greta's message in a way that is easy for even the littlest eyes and ears to understand. A section at the back features ideas for how kids and families can incorporate green habits into everyday life. To reduce the book's carbon footprint, this book is printed in the USA on 100% recycled paper, and 3% of the cover price is donated to 350.org, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting climate change.

BOOK REVIEW We asked Mila Chun, a 4th grader at Galileo School for Gifted Learning, to give us her review of Greta and the Giants. Greta and the Giants is the perfect way to educate a younger audience about climate change. It utilizes colorful illustrations and personification to clarify climate change to little ones. This book is written so even the youngest of people can understand climate change. This book is about a girl named Greta (Greta Thunberg). She lives in a beautiful forest with plants and animals of many kinds. But then, the giants start to burn and cut down the forest. The animals (personification) and Greta are joined by other people who think that the giants should stop cutting down trees. One thing that intrigued me about this book is the information about climate change in the back. It gives examples of things you can do to help slow climate change. I like that feature because it gives some things that you can do to help Greta and her friends. This is a fantabulous book! I love everything from the stunning illustrations on the cover to the information at the back! I would definitely recommend this book to people of all ages, not just young ones.

YOGI KIDS

Nurture Focus, Self-Esteem & Fitness

We all know the benefits of yoga for adults, but read on to learn how poses with playful names like downward dog, cat and gorilla can also inspire the younger set. Words by Christa Melnyk Hines Photo by Nicole Mitchem Illustrations from Freepik

Many adults swear by the ancient practice of yoga to relieve stress; improve flexibility, balance and strength; and enhance daily focus. But do children experience similar benefits? Libbey York, a yoga practitioner and instructor, enrolled her sons Graham, 8, and Lawson, 4, in a children's yoga class last summer, and their response surprised her. "They couldn't stop talking about all of their new moves and practicing their poses all around the house," she says. Graham likes practicing seated crossed-leg pose, and Lawson loves to show off his tree pose. In addition to enhancing her sons' flexibility and strength, York says the class improved her sons’ focus and body awareness as they attempted the poses. Linking mind and body. Yoga, which in Sanskrit means "to yoke," nurtures a connection between the mind, body and spirit. Balancing poses like airplane and tree, for example, strengthen muscles and also require mental focus and concentration to achieve and hold. Overall, multiple studies have found that yoga can help kids improve academic performance, physical fitness, self-awareness, self-esteem, concentration, emotional balance and behavior.

Slow down and breathe. In a "Stress in America" survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, more parents than non-parents report that they struggle to manage the stress of jobs and family responsibilities. Since children pick up on the tensions of their caregivers, they may internalize more stress too. Multiple studies have found that yoga offers effective stress relief for all ages. "In this fast-paced world in which we live, children need to know how to relax and breathe and mindfully move through their day," says yoga instructor Katy Henderson. "Teaching children how to breathe in yoga allows them to take that crucial breath before they get mad, angry or frustrated." Focus power. In a study conducted by School Psychology Review, researchers found that regular yoga practice can help children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) learn to calm their minds and focus on the present, improving on-task time and attention. And because of the proliferation of distracting electronic devices, even kids who don't suffer from ADHD can benefit. The mindfulness techniques that yoga practice offers can help kids re-focus on the present and concentrate on tasks that require their undivided attention.

LIVE / Yogi Kids Strike a pose. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 12 million kids between the ages of 2 and 19 years old are considered obese. Yoga offers a gentle way to get kids moving, strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and practice gross motor skills. "For the child who is not particularly active, yoga provides an avenue to move in a playful, engaging way," Henderson says. Spread the love. "Yoga fosters self-acceptance and actualization. It invites all participants to improve concentration and focus, and even helps develop self-compassion and compassion for others," writes Kristin Henningsen, adjunct professor at Kaplan University School of Health Sciences in her report "The Benefits of Yoga for Children." Pauline Emmett, a YoKid Ambassador, agrees. "In practicing yoga, children experience better self-esteem, and therefore have the confidence to trust themselves as being strong and capable beings," she says. "We talk about self-love, and how if we love ourselves, we can better care for our friends, family and the world."

10 Tips to Help Your Kids Reduce Anxiety by Getting a

Good Night's Sleep

All of us have seen what happens to our kids if they skip a nap or go to bed too late (cranky monster on the loose!), but did you know that sleep deprivation can also make your kids more anxious? Sleep plays a major role in how we function and is key to managing stress and anxiety. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, poor sleep has been shown to significantly worsen the symptoms of many mental health issues, including anxiety.

Words by Sandi Schwartz

You tried to squeeze one more errand into your afternoon before nap time. Big mistake! Now your preschooler is having a massive meltdown in the middle of Publix. Read on to understand why.

A University of Colorado study found that toddlers with insufficient naps were more anxious and frustrated. Researchers observed facial expressions of young children on a day when they skipped their normal nap and then on another day when they had their nap. Children were less excited about positive events and more frustrated with challenges when they skipped their nap than when they were well-rested. Also, the sleepy children had more difficulty expressing their emotions. Over time, this lack of sleep may shape their developing emotional brains and put them at risk for lifelong moodrelated problems. Another study from the University of Pennsylvania found that individuals who were limited to only 4.5 hours of sleep per night for one week reported feeling more stressed, angry, sad and mentally exhausted. When they went back to a normal sleep routine, they experienced a dramatic improvement in mood.

One of the most important tools for fighting anxiety is sleep. Here are 10 ways to help your kids get consistent, restful sleep. 1. Create a Bedtime Routine. Young children need routines to succeed. Create a fixed bedtime ritual and make sure you follow it every night. For instance, have your kids brush their teeth, get in bed for a story and say a gratitude prayer. Once you do this a few times, they will automatically ask for their special bedtime routine. 2. Set a Regular Wake-Up Time. You will need to wake them up consistently at the same time every day. This helps reduce their grogginess in the morning and gets their body used to sleeping and waking up at the same time. Do not change their schedule even on weekends. 3. Provide a Comfortable Environment. Children need a calming place to unwind before they can fall asleep. Provide them with a comfortable environment that has dim lights and quiet. Surrounding them with their favorite stuffed animal, soft bedding and pillows will help them relax and get into a comfy position for the night. 4. Shut Off Technology. More and more studies are finding that technology is affecting children’s sleep in a number of ways, such as the blue light from screens interfering with the sleeping hormone melatonin. Be sure to shut down computers, video games, televisions and other electronic gadgets at least 30 minutes before bedtime. More time is even better. 5. Keep Them Cool. A child’s sleep cycle is sensitive to both light and temperature. Be careful not to make your children’s bedroom too warm or to cover them up with heavy clothing and blankets. A cool environment is best for promoting sleep. Babycenter.com recommends setting the temperature at 65 to 70 degrees for young children.

6. Limit Caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that can last for several hours. Avoid serving your children chocolate desserts and caffeinated beverages, including soda, coffee, tea, energy drinks and caffeinated water. 7. Mindful Breathing. Mindful breathing helps reduce stress and anxiety by slowing down the body and initiating the relaxation response. It is a simple tool that your children can turn to any time they feel uneasy or worried. 8. Relaxation Music. Try using some relaxing music to calm your children at bedtime. 9. Talk Out Feelings. Kids often find it hard to sleep when they are under stress. Talk to them about their fears and reassure them that you are there to protect them. Reducing their fears is crucial because higher cortisol due to stress disrupts the sound sleep of your child. 10. Observe Their Sleeping Habits. If, despite following all the necessary tips, your children are still not sleeping properly, observe their sleeping pattern and seek advice from a medical expert. There is a possibility that your child might be suffering from a sleep disorder. Sandi Schwartz is a freelance writer, blogger and mother of two. Forming Friendships From Toddler to Teen

As parents, we want our kids to make good friends to have fun with and can confide in. Of course, not all kids are social butterflies, so how do you encourage friendships at every stage of the game from toddler to teen? Read on to learn. Words by Kerrie McLoughlin

TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS I envy the easy way in which the tiny crowd makes friends. They can plop down next to any random kid at a park, daycare or preschool, start chatting and — BAM! — they are instant pals. Taking your child places and providing chances for him to be around other kids is all it takes for him to make new friends during this special time. Playdates are a great way for toddlers and preschoolers to try out their social skills. Alyssa Ast of TheWMParentingConnection.com says, “Finding parents that have children close in age to yours is a good place to start. Take your children to the park and search these parents out. Strike up a conversation to see if your families share similarities. If so, set up a playdate in a public area until you become comfortable enough with one another to meet at each other’s house.”

Never underestimate the power of play! “By taking turns and sharing through activity and play, [children] are beginning to build friendships. It is important to help a child learn this through built-in fun and play-oriented activities that promote taking turns, sharing and caring about their new friends. Having children learn these at a young age helps them build a foundation for successful relationships as they mature into adults,” says Anna Marie Evans, a licensed teacher of Dr. Steven Stosny’s Compassionate Parenting (CompassionPower.com) class. It may seem a little early to be thinking ahead to friendships during the teen years, but don’t forget that your child is watching you and how you interact with them and with others (friends, family, your spouse or partner) right now. “Whatever the parents give at earlier ages will come home to roost with teenagers. Be there for them as they’re 3 and 8 and 10, and they’ll be halfway normal at 16,” says Victoria Solsberry, LCSW of Arlington, a psychiatric social worker and author of Adoption for Singles.

ELEMENTARY AGE KIDS If your child attends school, making friends should be easy with so many kids to choose from. Other ways for your child to make friends at this age include groups like Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts, sports (organized through the school or through a parks and recreation department) or clubs where your child can meet kids who share similar interests. If you homeschool, chances are there are many groups in your city where you can attend events where your child can make friends. When your child reaches elementary school age, you’ll want to make sure you are still modeling what makes a friend because she’ll learn a lot from you based on how she sees you interact with your spouse, family, co-workers and friends and how you work out disagreements. It’s also important to talk about what makes a friend (e.g., a friend is someone who doesn’t tease you or try to hurt you; someone who doesn’t talk badly about you behind your back or online; someone who comes to your birthday parties, listens to you, shares their things, offers to have you over to their house or do things with them, etc.). As with the toddler and preschooler period, parents are the ones who model friendships. Ask “what if” questions like, “What if a third kid wants to play with you and your friend?” because you

want your child to think about how to treat existing and new friends. Talk to your child about sharing, teasing and playing fair; play board games with them; and teach them not to get physical or retaliate. Your kids are looking to you to help them with building friendships. According to Dr. Rosemary Burton, Vice President of Education for Minnieland Private Day School, “The kids who are socially popular are the ones who are able to look at feelings and perspectives from other points of view and are not always worried just about what they are thinking and feeling. To sustain friendships, parents should be working on emotional competence and concentrating not just on the feelings of themselves but also of other people.” While getting to know your child’s school friends by having them over often is important, it’s also helpful for kids to have friends in their own neighborhood that they can visit easily and spend large amounts of time with. Rachel Elvin, mom of two, says, “It’s great that my kids have friends who live in our neighborhood. After getting to know the parents, we now just let our sons walk across the street or ride their bike a block up to hang out at their friend’s house.”

26 PLAYGROUND Feb / Mar 2020

TWEENS AND TEENS Drama rules during the tween and teen years, and you have the added challenge of helping your child learn how to deal with strong peer pressure along the lines of music, drugs, sex, drinking, how to dress, how to act and more. This season of parenting can make chasing after a marker-wielding toddler seem like a piece of cake. Victoria Solsberry, LCSW, says, “Teenagers who have received the love and support that they need at earlier ages will stay connected to their parents and at least consider their opinions.” Make sure you pay attention to who your child is hanging out with. Get to know his friends by inviting them over and being the Mom Taxi. And talk to your child about things like making good choices, how to get out of sticky situations, what a “good” friend looks like and how you expect to know where they are at all times. Teach your child that some ways for her to make friends include listening to others, smiling at people, keeping the gossip and cattiness to a minimum, talking to people first, being themselves, trying to have a good time and inviting someone new to sit with

them at lunch. Other ideas include trying out for a school play, participating in a sport, joining a club at school, attending church youth group activities, going to summer camp and so on. What if your child is hanging out with some kids you don’t approve of? Tweens and teens are like ships that need a lot of steering in the murky of waters of hormones and peer pressure. Ellen Jones, mom of five (including twin 14-year-old boys), says, “When my kids want to hang out with kids who have questionable behavior, we encourage the friends to play at our house so we can monitor what goes on. Then we treat them like we treat our kids and correct their behavior. If they don’t like it, they leave.” The friendship groundwork you lay when your child is just a toddler impacts how she’ll handle friendships when she’s a teenager and beyond. Teach her how to get along with other kids her age (and of other ages) so she can hold onto friends and make new ones throughout her life.

Your New American Dream:

A SIMPLE, UNCLUTTERED LIFE Words by Jan Pierce | Photos by Amy Smith

No matter how you look at it, today’s American life is anything but simple. Our lives are busy, demanding and complicated. Just negotiating the coordination of the weekly family schedule can bring on a headache. Who will take Johnny to his soccer practice while someone else attends Sarah’s music recital? When can the dental appointment fit into your work schedule? Add to that the complexity of our technological world with constant tweets, texts and phone calls. Our calendars may be right there on our phones, but how in the world can we actually do all the things listed and reserve any quality family time? We’ve all heard of the growing cry for a simpler, less-cluttered lifestyle, but few of us have taken steps toward making that happen. It seems too hard — too extreme. But don’t you wish your family sat down together more often and just enjoyed one another? Don’t you secretly or not so secretly wish you could get rid of about half of your “stuff.” Stay with me because you can approximate a simpler life with just a few decisions, and you may find you enjoy the results.

It's All About Making Space

If we’re used to spending lots of money on fast food and entertainment outside of our homes, we miss the opportunity to stay home, cook simple meals and enjoy being together while entertaining ourselves. Every decision we make to simplify family life will create “space” in terms of time, money or enjoyment. Here are some of the ways families can make small changes that produce big results:

MINDFUL CONSUMPTION.

Your family may choose to drive older cars to be free of monthly payments. You might plan your wardrobes carefully and frugally, including some good quality thrift store items. You may limit eating out to one or two times monthly.

FEWER BELONGINGS. Some minimalists go through their homes room by room and begin to de-clutter. They take a hard look at items to decide whether they’re really needed in the home. They may go through toys and clothing and pass them on to other families. It actually feels good to own fewer things and gain space you didn’t even know you had. Take on the motto: fewer, better things. SMALLER OR SIMPLER HOMES. Few of us want to live in a tiny home, but we may decide to buy or rent smaller or older properties. We may decide to find a home with enough outdoor space to grow a garden or own a few animals. We may choose an urban environment that is clean and simple without unnecessary decoration. We may buy good used or retro furniture that doesn’t break the bank.

CONSCIOUS EATING.

Most of us eat out too often and know we’re not making healthy choices. Limiting restaurant eating and taking pleasure in cooking simple, healthy meals is a step in the right direction. Try adding soup night to your family’s weekly meal planning for a dinner that’s fun and easy to prepare together.

MAKING TIME FOR CREATIVITY.

The more we own, the more upkeep and maintenance is required. For example, if we own more clothing, we have more laundry to do. We have more expenses in detergents, dry cleaning bills and time spent folding and putting away.

How many families do you know who create works of art, make music or simply spend quiet time together chatting, journaling or reading books? The recent rise of group art nights reminds me that we all have a need to create in some fashion or other.

If our children attend multiple extra-curricular clubs, teams and activities, our schedules are so tight that we have little time for homework or family fun.

Your New American Dream

Benefits of a Simpler, Richer Life LESS FINANCIAL STRESS.

Nothing puts more stress on family relationships than money problems. When the money causes chaos, it’s time to regroup and make a new plan.

ABILITY TO GIVE.

When life is simpler and the family is home together more often, there is the opportunity to volunteer time, energy or things. It’s also possible to share with others in practical ways.

MORE FREE TIME.

Unscheduled time is like gold. Choosing to live more simply opens up possibilities for free play, exploration, rest and relaxation that is beneficial to the entire family

CLOSER, DEEPER RELATIONSHIPS. When the family is on board to create a simpler lifestyle, there’s time to talk, work and enjoy life together. Maybe there’s time to bake bread or sit on the deck and observe local birds. Maybe the family gleans as much enjoyment from a simple board game as from the high-powered competitive sports most kids engage in. A simpler life can be designed to be the perfect fit for your family. Begin by merely setting some goals for healthier home-cooked meals or by challenging each family member to reduce their possessions by 20 items. Small steps toward your “new American dream” will reap important benefits for your family.

APPRECIATION. Most of us realize that when we have fewer possessions, we’re more likely to value the ones we have. One quality winter coat is more valuable to us than five or six cheaply made items of clothing with limited purpose. A durable set of wooden blocks may mean more to a child than many plastic toys that break easily.

FAMILY FISHING ADVENTURE

If your kids are anything like mine, keeping them entertained probably feels like Mission: Impossible, especially when it comes to finding new family activities. One of my favorite ways to put a new spin on family time is with a traditional pastime that’s making a comeback — fishing. Words by Stephanie Vatalaro

Growing up in Florida, I’ve always When it comes to gear, simple is best for newbies. To help limit line tangles, choose loved the water. Some other fishing with my daughter, Isla. essentials you’ll need include fishing line, Even if you’re a first-timer, fishing hooks, bobbers, sinkers and bait. Pro tip: To is an easy, kid-friendly activity that keep kids engaged, bring snacks and games to pull out during downtime. you can bond over as a family with just a few beginner steps. Step 3: Rig your line and cast. Step 1: Find a fishing spot. Rigs are the combination of hooks, sinkers, Going fishing doesn’t mean you have to pack up for a long drive far away from home. Places to fish are closer than you think, even in the city. Orlando’s “Fab Five” lakes — Ivanhoe, Turkey, Starke, Clear and Underhill — are a popular destination for new and experienced anglers alike. You can also find tons of places to fish throughout Florida with an interactive map found on TakeMeFishing.org. When selecting a family-friendly fishing spot, look for amenities like play areas, easy parking and picnic facilities as well as safe water and boat access.

Step 2: Gather your bait and tackle. There are two primary types of bait: natural and artificial. It’s up to you which to use, although beginners often have better luck with natural bait because it tends to be a better fish attractant. Earthworms are a great choice because they’re easy to put on a hook and don’t require any sophisticated technique to lure a bite.

bobbers and other add-ons to your fishing line. To begin rigging, tie a hook on the end of your line. An easy knot for first-timers is the improved clinch knot. Then, pinch one or two small split shot sinkers to your main line 6 to 12 inches from the hook. Finally, clip a circle bobber to the rig 3 to 4 feet above the hook. When you’re ready to cast, unlock your line and hold it with your fingers. Then swing your rod in an arc, letting go of the line at the peak. To reel in a catch, wait for the fish to stop tugging, then point your rod skyward. Begin reeling in your catch, slowly lowering your rod until it reaches a 45-degree angle. Repeat this process as needed. With these simple steps, you’ve already got the basics for a family fishing adventure. Before you hit the water, remember that the most important item an angler can carry is their fishing license. That’s because the conservation programs that take care of our waterways depend on revenue generated by fishing license sales. You can get your license any time at TakeMeFishing.org and learn even more beginner tips. Give it a shot, and you might just get hooked!

Orlando Children’s Business Fair Words by Wendy Meyer | Photos by Jessica Friend The Orange County Library System recently hosted its annual Orlando Children’s Business Fair, a unique opportunity for kids to present ideas and innovations and to learn more about business strategies. The fair allows young entrepreneurs to expose attendees to their businesses and to compete for a chance to win prize money based on creativity, execution and a working knowledge of their product or service. It’s also a great place for young business owners to market their products to future customers and to network with one another in a space that creates conversation among young people seeking to make our Orlando community a better place with their passions. ocls.info/ocbf

Nature of the Game Words by Wendy Meyer | Photos by Jessica Friend Get out and PLAY at Nature of the Game, the interactive exhibit at Harry P. Leu Gardens, now through April 5th. The weather is perfect for experiencing this hands-on exhibit that gives our favorite childhood games a fun and engaging focus on the natural world. Families will learn about ecosystems, food chains, and conservation while sharing “old school games and childhood memories with their kids. Leu Gardens is always a favorite spot to play, but this exhibit has us loving it in a whole new way. I-Spy a good time to be had by all! leugardens.org

Wild Florida's Drive-Thru Safari Park Words by Wendy Meyer Photos by Jessica Friend and Wild Florida Wild Florida just opened a drive-thru safari experience, and we're all about it! With many adventures to choose from, Wild Florida brings you into a world of exotic animals (zebras, watusi and giraffes) from the comfort of your own vehicle, and then offers free admission into the gator park that houses rescued gators, lemurs, sloths and much more. Driving through the park gives guests a view of animals and offers teaching opportunities for families. You know how much PLAYGROUND loves those moments where fun and learning collide! We think the gorgeous giraffes are the stars of the show. You can handfeed them on an elevated platform, which is a stop on the tour. Rolling through Wild Florida really makes you feel like you’re on another continent when you're just a short drive away from home. wildfloridairboats.com/drive-thru-safari-park
