Orlando’s First Cat Café:

THE KITTY BEAUTIFUL

Local parents can breathe a sigh of relief that a new K-8 school has opened offering a fresh approach to learning for children with identified dyslexia. Park School (PS) offers a vibrant and challenging academic program through diagnostic and prescriptive learning experiences in an emotionally sound environment. Founded by Jennifer Disch, owner of Engage the Brain, and Mary-Elizabeth Langston, associate in the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and instructional director at Engage the Brain, this school offers a proven approach based in the science of reading. The Orton-Gillingham Approach not only presents skills and strategies, but it also builds confidence and trust in one’s own personal learning journey. The program’s intentional and purposeful instruction is designed to fill gaps, moving as quickly as one can or as slowly as one must.

Never been to a cat café before? The Kitty Beautiful offers coffee and espresso drinks, teas, beer or wine, handcrafted sodas, freshly made cold-pressed organic juices and snacks from their wonderful purristas in the front. In the back is a lounge where cats roam while people can pet and entertain them. A $10 cover fee allows you to go into the separate cat area to play with up to a dozen free-roaming, fully adoptable cats. The fee helps cover the cost of housing and feeding the cats. Walk-ins to visit the cats are welcome; reservations are not required but can be made online in advance, if desired. All the cats who come to live at The Kitty Beautiful come from the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, who has named The Kitty Beautiful as an adoption partner. All cats at the café are up for adoption and have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. All adoptions include a full copy of each cat’s medical records, a trial membership to PetFirst insurance, a $50 voucher to veterinary services at Pet Alliance, a free bag of food and basic microchip registration.

TALK OF THE PLAYGROUND

Newly Redesigned

MOUNT TROTWOOD PLAYGROUND As you know, we love a good playground <wink emoji>, so we’re excited to introduce a new place to PLAY in Winter Springs! The theme of the newly redesigned Mount Trotwood Playground, which celebrated its grand opening in November, is the Rocky Mountains. The log buildouts in the playground complement the log structure of the newly built Pamela A. Carroll Memorial Pavilion, another step toward fulfilling the vision of Trotwood Park. The playground consists of two shaded treehouse structures with equipment designed for ages 2 to 5 and ages 5 to 12. The structures feature slides, climbing obstacles, bridges and a tic-tactoe panel. Around the playground, you’ll find river-blue and grass-green turf and climbable boulders and mountains. This park is sure to be a favorite of happy campers from all over Central Florida. 701 Northern Way, Winter Springs | winterspringsfl.org

Boozehounds Dog Bar: a new place to PLAY with Fido! Soon you can hang out with your furry buds and grab some suds. Orlando is welcoming its first off-leash dog park with a bar! While going out for a drink is fun, going out for a drink with your four-legged fur baby sounds amazing! Boozehounds will be a members-only sports bar and dog park where you and your pup can socialize while enjoying a craft beer or a crisp glass of wine. We can’t wait, and neither can our dogs! boozehoundsdogbar.com

NEW!

KIDZ PLAY & PARTY Central Florida can’t get enough indoor play places, in our humble opinion. Introducing Kidz Play & Party! From fabulous parties to fun places for the babes to run and play, this place offers it all for kiddos ages 0–6 (but all kids are welcome). They host fun playdates and events that will surely have you and your mom crew heading over for some memory-making good times. 8080 S. Family-Friendly Burgers with a Twist Twisted Root Burger Co. in Winter Park is now open and offering a delectable menu of burgers, fries, salads and custom custard frozen shakes, all upgraded to tasty perfection. Among the 12 (and counting) custom burgers are such standouts as the Western (pepper jack, bacon, fried onion strings and jalapeños), the Kevin Bacon (three pieces of bacon and Danish blue cheese) and the Freshman 15 (smashed fries, melted cheddar, fried egg and bacon). The Vegabond (house-made chickpea, black bean, brown rice and quinoa burger with sliced avocado, pickled red onions and sriracha) and Happy Pilgrim (turkey meat, goat cheese, kale pesto and mixed greens) are popular alternatives to bovine meats. Any burger can top one of three freshly made salads. This burger joint offers something for everyone in your family! The Grove, Winter Park twistedrootburgerco.com

Define Your Family’s Core Values by Creating a

FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT Words by Tiffany Doerr Guerzon

What does your family value most? Would your kids’ answers mirror yours if asked that question? As parents, one of our biggest jobs is to help our kids develop their own internal compass — a framework to help them make decisions when we aren’t with them. But with all of the outside influences kids experience today, how can you make sure your children really understand what qualities and traits are important to your family? One way is to create a family mission statement. The family mission statement is a concept described in 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen Covey. Many successful corporations craft mission statements so that all employees can work together toward a common goal. Covey contends that families, like businesses, need common goals and values to function well.

“A family mission statement is a combined, unified expression from

all family members of what your family is all about — what it is you really want to do and be — and the principles you choose to govern your family life.” Stephen Covey

STEP 1 Call a Family Meeting To start developing your statement, hold a family get-together. Covey recommends that you keep the meeting fun; combine it with a pizza party or fun activity. If your kids are young, keep the meeting short. You don’t want this important discussion to become a chore! Keep in mind that it may take more than one meeting to complete your mission statement.

STEP 2 Create Start with reflection questions to get everyone thinking. Read each person’s answers out loud. Make sure there is a strict rule that no one is allowed to laugh at or judge another’s thoughts. For moms and dads, be careful not to turn this into a discussion of what kids are doing wrong. (Even if Timmy bringing up “responsibility” as a value seems like the perfect opening to bring up that he doesn’t always do his chores!) The discussion should focus on what the family is doing well in the present and what you hope to do better in the future. Try some of these sample questions and add your own:

• How do we show our love and support for one another? • How do we treat others? • What do you like about our family? • What do you like about coming home? • Think about your favorite memories of our family time? What were we doing? What made that time special? • Can you think of other families we admire? Why? • How do you think others describe our family?

STEP 3 Cull & Curate Once you have compiled everyone’s answers, you will likely see some similar values start to repeat. Try to stay away from goals. This is because goals are situation-specific, while values are timeless. For example, a goal would be, “We will volunteer as a family each summer,” while a value would be, “We serve others.”

Every family will have a different list. Be sure to include fun values as well as more serious ones. Your list will likely be very long at first. You might need to get together more than once to whittle it down. The end goal of creating your statement is honing it down to a memorable sentence or short paragraph. Once you finish, display your hard work! Print it out and frame the page, paint it on the wall or create a piece of art to symbolize your unique family vision. The important thing isn’t how fancy it looks or whether guests visiting your home understand what you wrote; it’s the meaning the mission statement holds for your family. Taking the time to figure out what your family is about and what you truly value can be anything from a fun family activity to a transformative experience. At the very least, it will spark discussion!

Why All the Florida Hate?

It’s no secret that Florida has issues. But is it the worst state in the country? That’s a surprisingly common opinion, at least in the media. Words by Chris Karel iStock | Andrea Hill

If you consume any form of mass media or surf the web, you’re guaranteed to come across someone bashing the Sunshine State. In 2017, the website Thrillist placed Florida dead last in a “definitive and final” ranking of the 50 states. On his show Last Week Tonight, John Oliver regularly points to Florida as the worst state in the union. In his prior gig on The Daily Show, Oliver said, “I think it might honestly be time for the Sunshine State to officially change its motto to the Worst State.” Want more examples? Google “Florida sucks” and you’ll get 392 million of them. Why is hating Florida so popular? Maybe Oliver has only been here once. To Disney World. In August. Or maybe the editors at Thrillist resent Florida for luring away their friends and family. I don’t know what their problem is. I just know that I wouldn’t want to raise a family anywhere else. To be sure, Florida grapples with the same intractable issues plaguing the rest of the country. According to a Florida Policy Institute report released last year, we rank 49th on a list measuring income inequality in the U.S. Thanks to the state’s rejection of federal funds to expand Medicaid, Florida also sits near the bottom in access to basic health coverage. And in Central Florida in particular, surging growth will gobble up 2.4 million acres over the next 50 years,

according to a study by the University of Florida. That’s almost double the amount of land cleared for development as of 2010. The problem is that the people heaping scorn on Florida don’t cite statistics like these to support their claims. Thrillist’s justification for Florida’s last-place ranking was a link to the “Florida Man” Twitter account and the suggestion that maybe Florida was simply “born for this.” Ironically, first place on Thrillist’s ranking of the 50 states went to another peninsula (two, actually). The author lauded Michigan for having more shoreline than any other state besides Alaska. Great stat, but wrong state. That honor actually belongs to Florida. So, who am I to stick up for the Sunshine State? Sure, I was born and raised here. But I’ve also been around. After high school, I went to college in Ohio before crisscrossing the country to live in New York City, Los Angeles, D.C., San Francisco and then back to the Big Apple. When it came time to start a family, though, my wife and I chose to come to Florida. I won’t lie — the big draws were my mom and sister, the free babysitters. But lifestyle was also a big factor in the decision. My wife and I both grew up with backyards and beaches in places where being barefoot outside in January was perfectly acceptable. We missed those things for ourselves and wanted them for our kids.

Why All the Florida Hate? No matter where the bottle sends you, you’ll bump into people who don’t look, think or talk exactly like you do. In 2017, The New York Times compared the demographics of every U.S. county with those of the nation as a whole in the past, present and future. The study found that Seminole County most closely matches the United States of today, while Orange and Osceola counties are microcosms of America as it’s expected to look in 2046 and 2060, respectively. All of this diversity means that EPCOT is no longer the epicenter of international food, culture and music in Central Florida (but I still love you, Mexico pavilion). Caribbean, Asian and Latin American transplants have transformed the foodie scene, while the Dr. Phillips Center gives us a great opportunity to experience new and different forms of music, dance and other performing arts.

While our rationale for moving was superficial (grass! pool! date nights!), the reasons we’ve grown to love Florida boil down to something a little deeper: diversity — and the diversity of that diversity. Diversity in activities, people, food and culture, natural beauty, and yes, even diversity in the type of crazy s**t you see on the local news every night. And as the name suggests, Central Florida is right in the center of it.

There is real depth and substance here that transcends the Happiest Place on Earth facade. Sadly, it took a tragedy for me to realize that. I’ve watched Orlando grow up over the past 35 years, but to me, it became a world-class city when I saw a rich, thriving community of diversity and inclusion highlighted in news reports from around the world after the Pulse shooting. When it comes to LGBTQ+ protections, the ideological divide in the state is as wide as the distance from Tallahassee to Key West. On the other hand, the website Nerdwallet ranked Orlando number 10 on a list of the top gay-friendly cities in the U.S.

Try this: Spin a bottle and then plan an outing based solely on the direction it ends up pointing. From Orlando, you can go north and see springs teeming with manatees, tour one of the world’s most famous racetracks or visit a Spanish fort in the nation’s oldest city. Just as Florida’s people come in every shape, size and color, our flora Drive west to check out quaint little towns nestled in rolling hills, and fauna go way beyond just palm trees and pink flamingos. We wineries and a playground sandwiched between a sea plane port share this state with an incredible array of plants and animals that and a steam train depot. Ocala National Forest, Crystal River and make their homes in a bewildering assemblage of ecosystems, from the otherworldly Devil’s Den await you to the northwest. South of >>> coral reefs to grasslands. As much as I appreciated the mountains us lies the family-friendly snorkeling paradise of Peanut Island, not to mention Miami and the Keys. Head east (or heck, just LOOK east) to witness rockets as tall Floridians enjoy horseback riding on the beach in Daytona Beach and Amelia Island. as 30-story buildings get blasted into space (and, thanks to SpaceX, brought back again). There’s so much more to see and do than just theme parks and beaches (although those are great, too). Another great option: Put the bottle away and just explore Orlando. Outstanding parks like Orlando Wetlands and Blue Jacket cover the metro map like the dots on Minnie’s dress. Or pick a neighborhood to explore. There are dozens, from Audubon Park with its eclectic East End Market, to the fusion restaurants and eye-popping murals of Mills 50, to that stately old standby Winter Park. There’s always something going on downtown at Lake Eola, and the Orlando Public Library is a treasure – if you haven’t checked out the library’s Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation and Creativity, do it now. It will blow you away. 24 PLAYGROUND Dec 2019 / Jan 2020

Why All the Florida Hate? While this has helped make Florida a retirement haven for decades, young professionals are starting to take note. According to a recent study by fintech company SmartAsset, affluent Gen Xers and millennials are streaming out of Chicago, D.C. and New York City to Florida, Texas and other lower-cost states. U.S. Census Bureau data shows that more people are moving to Florida than any other state, and most of them are coming from New York.

Devil's Den: Central Florida's prehisistoric swimming hole

out west, I always thought, “They look nice, but what can I do with them?” Whether you like scuba diving, kayaking, hiking or all of the above, there’s always some way you can make yourself an active part of that pretty Florida view and get up close and personal with all kinds of critters. Granted, we also have plenty of beasties you don’t want to get too chummy with, but I think even that’s an up-vote for Florida. I still get a thrill when I spot the telltale nose and eyes of a gator gliding across the surface of a lake.

I understand that some people don’t mind paying higher taxes, rent and other costs to live in bigger cities or more glamorous places. But nothing makes me happier than paddling with my family down a crystal-clear, spring-fed river or hitting the beach with my kids in January. And that brings me back to my earlier point about runaway development and another theory about all this Florida-hating. Maybe they love Florida as much as I do, and we’re actually on the same side. Maybe, if enough people become convinced that Florida is a terrible place, some of what makes it so special will stay intact and untouched, at least for a little while longer. In which case, yes, it’s all true. Florida is the worst state in the U.S. and possibly even the universe.

And that brings me to another indigenous animal and the strange things they do: Florida Man. Sure, there are some weird people here. But in 100 years, when global warming has made it possible for Minnesotans to go outside yearround and have access to exotic animals, we’ll see who wins the Weirdo World The spectacle of a rocket launch should be enough to earn Florida 49th place. Cup. In the meantime, I’m not worried about the guy who robs a 7-11 with an alligator. It’s the Bernie Madoffs and Ken Lays that keep me up at night. As I mentioned, I’ve been around. I’ve been to plenty of places that have some of what Florida offers. New York has the beaches, but the water’s too cold to swim in most of the year. California has the sunshine, but I missed the tropical foliage and thunderstorms. D.C. has the humidity, but it also has blizzards. Wait, those are both bad things. The point is that lots of places have bits of Florida, but only Florida has all of Florida. The cherry on top of all of this is that many of the best things to do in Florida are free or nearly so, and overall, the cost of living here is half what it is in New York City.

Chris Karel lives in Chuluota with his kids, ages 8 and 12, and wife, Lisa, whom he stole from New Zealand. Chris would have written this when that Thrillist ranking first came out, but he was tied up toiling away for the man. An involuntary parole from the corporate world has finally given him time to get some things off his chest. 26 PLAYGROUND Dec 2019 / Jan 2020

DIY:

SNOWSTORM IN A JAR While Mother Nature is creating flurries in other parts of the country, you can make a storm of your own right at your kitchen table. Gather kids of all ages and generate a fizzy storm in a jar using household ingredients. Here is everything you need to know about this snowy science experiment. Words by The Creative Experts at Little Passports

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Fill your jar about three-fourths full with baby oil. In a separate bowl, blend water and a few tablespoons of white paint. 2. Add as much glitter and blue food coloring to the oil as you’d like, and then top off the jar with your water and paint mixture. 3. Drop the Alka-Seltzer tablet into the jar and take a step back. THE SCIENCE BEHIND THIS EXPERIMENT

Photo: Jessica Friend

MATERIALS • Water (about 1 cup) • Baby oil • Glitter • Alka-Seltzer

• White paint • Blue food coloring • Glass jar • Stir stick

This experiment works for a few reasons. Because oil is less dense than water, the water will naturally sink to the bottom of the jar. When the Alka-Seltzer is dropped into the jar, its interaction with the water creates pressure in an upward direction, and the oil pushes it back down. This pressure back and forth is part of what creates the snowstorm. The other element is the interaction between water and sodium bicarbonate in the Alka-Seltzer, which generates carbon dioxide gas. The combination of these factors creates a blizzard every time! Whether the temperature is plummeting outdoors or you just want to bring a bit of winter fun to a summer day, your snowstorm in a jar is a foolproof way to get kids interested in science. With under $10 in ingredients, a whimsical lesson plan awaits!

Inspire Your Child With a Science Expeditions Subscription! Every month, your child will receive a package full of science experiments and STEM-related activities with themes like rockets, forensics, caves and crystals, slime and so much more! littlepassports.com 48 PLAYGROUND Dec 2019 / Jan 2020
