Following the huge success of their first visit with La Bohème, Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose return to the Belgrade with their new version of La Traviata. La Traviata is the story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future. Set in the prohibition era of speakeasies and bootlegging, with Violetta’s lover Alfredo, a passionate young man whose optimism has been shaken by time at the front in the First World War, Violetta’s gang boss protector ‘the Baron’, and Alfredo’s father, a crooked politician.

This new production reveals the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties. La Traviata has been thrilling audiences for generations. This new version features a stunning young cast whose acting abilities are more than a match for their vocal talents. With Verdi’s sumptuous melodies, accompanied by a trio of clarinet, cello and piano, this production will be every bit as entertaining and moving as La Bohème. This new English version is directed by Robin Norton-Hale with the new orchestration by Harry Blake.

Sat 1 - Sat 22 Feb

Auditorium: B2

While the master of the house is out of town to escape the plague, his house-keeper sets up with ‘a cheater and his punk’ as the city’s premier con-man. A full range of alternative services are offered to the citizens who beat a furtive path to their door - anything from the secret of eternal youth, to that recipe of recipes which will turn a tin can into bankable gold. Masters of the ludicrous disguise, the team of con-artists find their multiple deceptions spiralling out of control until they receive some alarming news... Jonson’s brilliant satire burns away the dross, exposing a society whose obsessions make it vulnerable to any well-worked scam. This explosive production of The Alchemist from Riding Lights, especially revived for Coventry, is fast, furious, feisty and very, very funny.

PROPELLER IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE BELGRADE THEATRE AND THE TOURING PARTNERSHIP PRESENTS

By William Shakespeare

Tues 11 - Sat 15 Feb A Midsummer Night’s Dream is arguably Shakespeare’s most magical play, where love and illusion collide when two pairs of lovers become entangled in fairy mischief on the eve of a royal wedding. Dreams and reality become interchangeable and romantic chaos ensues. Seeing really is believing. In Shakespeare’s smartest and most farcical play, The Comedy of Errors, two sets of estranged twins separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later - with hilarious consequences. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas and wild mishaps bring a family crisis so complicated that time itself loses the plot - into heartwarming focus. Fortunately the audience is always one step ahead.

Auditorium: Main Stage

No other company brings Shakespeare to life like Propeller. With fantastic music performed live on stage, their performances are unique, energetic and highly engaging. It’s like Shakespeare has been reinvented without losing any sense of the works’ heritage and historical value. A Midsummer Night’s Dream:

“I’d go so far to say this production is touched by genius.”

HHHHH The Mail on Sunday

The Comedy of Errors:

“Blissfully entertaining... the funniest and most farcical I’ve seen.”

HHHH The Guardian

More dastardly than Dracula, more fearful than Frankenstein and more silly than the Sphinx, the mother of all horror comedies, The Mummy. From deepest, darkest, dangerous Egypt, via Coventry, a legendary curse is stirring back into life and we’re all going along for the outrageous and terrifying ride. This titillating tale of terror and intrigue spans thousands of years and will have you laughing, screaming, screaming with laughter and laughing with screaming in equal measure! Adaptation by Jack Milner. Directed by Joe Harmston.

A respectable legal practitioner, a beautiful dark-eyed Cornish heiress, a 5,000 year-old man seeking an ancient love and the tomb of the mystical Queen Tera all clash spectacularly in hilarious circumstances. Jason Durr (Heartbeat) swaps life as a bobby on the ‘beat’ for life as a heroic legal eagle, whilst Susie Amy has traded life as a Footballer’s Wife for something a little less scary! With Denis Lill, who has gone from saving lives at The Royal to trying to resurrect the dead.

Tues 6 - Sat 10 May A quintessential English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earth shattering formula. Arriving at the Estate moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery, and deception amid the estate's occupants. That man is Hercule Poirot. In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time. He is the only fictional character ever to receive a full-page obituary in the New York Times.

Auditorium: Main Stage

Starring Robert Powell as Hercule Poirot, he has received multiple awards and a BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of ‘Jesus’ in Franco Zefferelli’s Jesus of Nazareth and in numerous films, including 39 Steps and Shaka Zulu. His stage performances include Alan Bennett’s Single Spies and Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray. Black Coffee also stars Company regulars Liza Goddard from TV hits Bergerac and Give Us A Clue, Gary Mavers, best known for playing heart-throb doctor Andrew Attwood in Peak Practice, and Ben Nealon, perhaps best loved for his role as Capt Forsythe in Soldier Soldier. The Belgrade Theatre and Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company present

ll That Jazz!

Singers, Swastikas and A By Peter Arnott

Directed by Hamish Glen

Sat 13 - Sat 27 Sept

Auditorium: Main Stage

The jazz scene in 1930s’ Berlin was one of the most vibrant and exciting in the world - a time captured brilliantly in Kander & Ebb’s musical, Cabaret. But what happened to those talented singers and musicians as the Nazis’ grip tightened? The Nazis hated jazz - they saw it as decadent and impure. But one of them, Propaganda Ministry official, Karl “Charly” Schwedler, understood its true power. And he made it his mission to harness that power as a weapon. Propaganda Swing throws a spotlight on the gripping true story of ‘Charly and his Orchestra’. Fri 26 Sept, 7.45pm

Featuring a fantastic swing band live on stage, this enthralling show reveals the characters behind the story of how some of the greatest German jazz musicians of the day entered into a Faustian pact with the Fascists - they could keep playing their beloved music at the price of seeing it corrupted for evil. The captivating combination of WWII intrigue and drama set against a backdrop of glitz, glamour and Big Band swagger, makes Propaganda Swing the must-see show of the Belgrade’s autumn season.

Sat 27 Sept, 2.30pm

Evenings: 7.45pm, except Tues 16 Sept, 7pm Matinees: Sats 20 & 27 Sept, and Weds 24 Sept, 2.30pm Previews: Sat 13 & Mon 15 Sept, all tickets £8.75 Tickets: From £8.75 to £18.75 (Early bird prices until June 2014) Concessions: From £8.75 to £16.75 This production has been made possible by the generosity of the Reid Dalglish family and with support from Arts Council England’s Catalyst Art Programme.
