CHAMPION OF CHANGE

An esteemed Sandestin® resident’s unyielding journey to reshape America

At 93 years old, Dr. Fred Gray continues to fight the good fight.

Known for his work as a civil rights attorney, Gray notably represented Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks at the start of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in the 1950s. Gray was appointed as the legal counsel and local pastor Martin Luther King Jr. was appointed the spokesperson. Gray became King’s first civil rights attorney.

For some 70 years since, Gray has continued to challenge the nation’s system of equality, dedicating his life to refashioning the social fabric of America.  For the last 26 years, he has served as president of the Tuskegee Human & Civil Rights Multicultural Center, aka Tuskegee History Center, a nonprofit corporation located in Tuskegee, Alabama, educating the public on the importance of equal justice for all.

Before he began making an indelible mark on the justice system, Gray spent much of his time in church. His parents, Abraham and Nancy Jones Gray, were devout members of Holt Street Church of Christ in Montgomery, Alabama, and

they had high hopes for their youngest son to become a preacher. At his mother’s insistence, Gray attended the Nashville Christian Institute (NCI), a faith-centered boarding school for African Americans, where he excelled academically and developed speaking skills under the mentorship of preacher and NCI president Marshall Keeble.

Gray intended to become a preacher or history teacher until a faculty member at Alabama State encouraged him to pursue law school. He decided to do both.

In 1954, Gray passed his Ohio and Alabama Bar exams. In 1943, he became an ordained minister in the Church of Christ.

One could say the rest was history, but Gray’s journey had only just begun.

With ordained steps, a wealth of knowledge and honed skills rooted in his preaching days, Gray worked alongside King in the 1950s to courageously advocate for Rosa Parks, among many others, and ensure equal constitutional rights for African Americans.

“Mrs. Parks was no more an accidental victim than I accidentally determined

to become a lawyer and destroy segregation,” Gray shared in a previous interview with Sandestin Living®. His persistent pursuit for equality and justice is proven in the countless risks he has taken to challenge and change unjust laws.

“For the rest of my life, I have fought to destroy everything segregated I could find. I have fought for education rights, for black voting rights,” Gray said in a recent interview for the AARP Bulletin “Inequality and the struggle for equal justice continues.”

Gray’s remarkable career extends far beyond civil rights protests. He has played a pivotal role in changing voting legislation, housing and employment equality, and education. Regarded as one of the most influential and successful civil rights attorneys of the 20th century, as well as the first Black president of the Alabama Bar Association, Gray’s legacy continues to embolden others. His life is a true testament to the impact of advocacy, and his commitment is proof that the journey toward equality is a marathon, not a sprint.

Gray continues to run in the race, practicing law and preaching still today.

Though he was never one meant for retirement, the thought of a respite, a home away from home, began to

appeal to Gray as he neared traditional retirement age. In 1991, Gray and his late wife Bernice (present wife Carol) bought their first homes within the gates of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Today, they still own several properties and are active members of the community. Gray has served on the Sandestin Rental Advisory Committee as an advocate for Sandestin Rental Management and a voice for other Sandestin owners who trust Sandestin with the management of their vacation rental investment.

“We’ve seen a lot of beaches, but there are very few beaches as pretty as the one at Sandestin,” Gray remarked in a prior interview for Sandestin Living®.

Gray and his wife Carol continue regular visits to their favorite Sandestin beaches, but his work keeps him busy.

In 2022, President Joe Biden awarded Gray the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. In 2023, Gray received NAACP’s Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award for his innumerable contributions. In the same year, he received the American Bar Association’s highest honor, the ABA Medal.

revised edition. In the book, Gray tells the story of his early involvement in the Civil Rights Movement and desegregation and his work with Parks and King. The new edition elicited a letter of appreciation from then President Barack Obama.

“A great deal of this book was written from here,” Gray said of his autobiography in his prior Sandestin Living® interview. He noted that the balcony of his beachside Sandestin home, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, became his chosen writing nook.

KINDNESS AND COMMUNITY ILLUMINATE A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS PATH FOR A COURAGEOUS CHILD

In the heart of winter, when the chill whispers promises of joy, and the world adorns itself in festive lights, a special journey unfolded for a brave little soul named Skylar. At just eight years old, Skylar battles a nervous system disorder with courage that belies his tender age. This Christmas, however, the focus wasn’t on hospital visits or treatments; it was about fulfilling a dream, a wish that sparkled brighter than the most radiant star atop a Christmas tree. Thanks to the concerted efforts of the Sandestin Foundation for Kids and Make-A-Wish Central & Northern Florida, Skylar’s dream to visit Disney World became a reality.

For Skylar and his family, the trip was more than a mere vacation; it was a celebration of life, hope and the magic of childhood. The Porchia family embarked on their adventure in late December, a time when Disney World transforms into a wonderland aglow with the spirit of the season. From the enchanting parades at Magic Kingdom to the immersive experiences at Universal Studios, every moment was a treasure, a precious memory imprinted in their hearts.

One of the highlights of their trip was attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. JUAN BOCHENSKI MEET

Australia. Anguilla. St. Lucia. The Bahamas. More than stamps in chef Juan Bochenski’s passport, these international locales tell the story of his culinary journey.

Bochenski, executive chef at Hotel Effie’s Ovide, regularly roams from table to table, greeting guests and becoming acquainted with his new community. His wide smile telegraphs warmth as he introduces his new menu at the sophisticated venue.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bochenski grew up sampling his mother’s delicious pastries, but cooking had not yet entered the

picture for him. Bochenski expected to follow in his father’s footsteps — until he didn’t. What started as odd jobs in kitchens transformed into a passion that led to education. In 1991, he graduated from Alicia Berger Cooking School near home in Buenos Aires. But a meeting with a chef from England led him further into the field. A promise of deeper training and more opportunity brought Bochenski to Adelaide, Australia, where he continued his education at the Regency International Centre, famed for world-class training in cookery, hospitality, bakery and butchery.

The quiet city of Adelaide, surrounded by vineyards and national parks teeming with wildlife, provided a stark contrast to the fast-paced Buenos Aires of his youth. In Adelaide, Bochenski honed his cooking skills at fine dining establishments, developing a modern approach tinged with Latin roots while remaining attuned to his mantra “keep the process simple, less is more.”

provided an exclusive members-only community with guests like Jennifer Lopez and Reese Witherspoon to enjoy his fare. In St. Lucia, Bochenski oversaw Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet resorts, injecting his Argentinian spice into the Caribbean culinary scene. At Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he marinated in a space inspired by culture and community. He worked closely with local farmers and purveyors to bring guests the freshest seasonal produce and highest quality proteins.

Each stop on his journey added another ingredient to his culinary

arsenal. All the while, he stayed grounded in the foundational moments from his mother’s kitchen.

“When I develop a dish, the process takes me on this rollercoaster of memories,” Bochenski said. “Coming from Argentina, I love nicely seasoned, well-grilled proteins with a simple sauce,” Bochenski said.

Those glimpses of his past inspire delicious plates like the filet mignon served with potato pave — razor-thin potato slices layered in a loaf pan to give the spuds grand height — and a pool of malbec jus.

Another standout on the menu is the collard greens. Bochenski loves the smokiness that the turkey adds to this savory dish.

“It is Southern, but it has the complexity of kimchi,” he said.

The bounty of Gulf seafood in the area, especially the oysters, provides Bochenski with a wealth of inspiration as he develops new dishes. But it was Ovide’s design that reeled him in.

“I fell in love with the restaurant when I came to the interview,” Bochenski said. “It’s one of the most beautiful spaces I’ve ever seen.”

The warm chocolate paint mixed with caramel leather accents, pops of polished brass and dramatic floorto-ceiling windows emit a sense of mid-century luxe to Ovide’s dining

room. The large-scale ceiling mural — a bouquet of pale pink peonies, delicate bluebells and fluffy white viburnum, inspired by Jan Davidsz de Heem’s Vase of Flowers painting — interrupts the scene by celebrating fleeting seasonality. Bochenski knew he needed to bring that vibrance to the menu while honoring the Southern culture embedded in Hotel Effie’s DNA.

His fine dining experience, molecular gastronomy experiments and Latin roots meld organically with Ovide’s culture. Bochenski has maintained those Southern touches throughout Ovide and Hotel Effie — like Grandma Effie’s chocolate chip cookies, a secret family recipe, served daily at 5 p.m. and those deliciously flaky biscuits you can get at breakfast with a side of homemade jam.

“I’m bringing some Latin touches but also keeping the Southern dishes everyone expects when you pass by this part of Sandestin®,” he said. “Fresh and seasonal, but with personality.”

Marrying cultures, Bochenski folds in his version of a creme brulee with tropical fruits, basil seeds and mango gel — hello, molecular gastronomy — and a riff on fried rice with those collard greens he loves and whole grilled fish, fresh from the Gulf but with Argentinian flare.

Our local market continues to show a healthy correction with slightly higher inventory numbers and average days on the market. Nationally, the average time on the market is three months. Locally, we are seeing an average of 110 days. Inventory levels and average days on the market still suggest a seller’s market.

While the market is favorable for sellers, it’s essential to note the evolving dynamics. We’re not experiencing the frenzy of multiple offers, over-listing prices or offers with no contingencies. Buyers, especially those securing loans, are more cautious, prioritizing property quality and demanding value for their investment. In the first quarter of 2022, properties sold at an average of 97.8% of the list price. In 2023, the average sales-to-list price was 95.4%, and for the first two months of 2024, the average sales-to-list price ratio was 94.3%.

As real estate professionals, we are here to aid our sellers in setting realistic listing prices and prepare them to negotiate, which is crucial in the current climate. Today’s buyers are meticulous, conducting inspections and seeking properties that offer value without the need for extensive renovations.

Despite the changes, Sandestin remains a highly desirable location. While multiple offers and aggressive pricing might be less prevalent, the demand for Sandestin properties remains strong. Sellers who understand the changing dynamics and adapt their strategies will continue to find success in this market.
