Elizabeth Cramer is known for her skill in navigating challenging projects in commercial and residential real estate. From representing investors in the acquisition and development of industrial parks to working with first-time homebuyers, builders, lenders and others in the real estate sector, she takes a multifaceted approach to her practice. Cramer joined the Asheville law firm of Goosmann Rose Colvard & Cramer in 2007 and was named a partner three years later. Her efforts to help business owners and investors during the 2008 recession stand out among her top professional accomplishments. “Shortly after being licensed to practice law, the Great Recession occurred,” she said. “So, I formed and developed my practice in times that demanded unique, creative and unconventional real estate and financing structure and transactions.” Cramer says her sharp analytical abilities help her stand out and makes her a successful attorney. “I can quickly absorb and sort facts and details, assess and then formulate the legal options and strategies,” she said.

Growing up in Nash County, Maggie Cromer loved to sing, and she majored in music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation she decided to switch gears and follow her father, Joe Hester, into law. Today, she is a partner at Midtown Property Law and enjoys her real estate practice. “My best subjects in law school at UNC were property and estates, and I took the real estate broker course my last semester and the broker’s exam a few weeks before I took the bar exam,” she says. “I believe the broker’s course helped me to pass the bar exam the first time.” Cromer credits her success to support from her fellow attorneys and the value they bring to her career. “They are a support system both emotionally and professionally, and I appreciate our collaborative efforts to solve complex legal matters and our ability to confide in each other when things are tough,” she says. “There are some great minds out there and I learn something new every day.”

For years, Raleigh attorney Laurie Gengo dreamed about owning her own law firm. In 2008, her dream came true when she opened Triangle Law Group, a boutique litigation practice, where she also practices real estate law. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think the firm would be celebrating its 15th anniversary,” she says. “The experience of launching and managing a law firm has been one of most stressful yet satisfying things I have ever done.” Gengo describes herself as an analytical and creative person who uses these attributes to help her clients. “By using both sides of my brain, I am able to craft outside-the-box solutions to our clients’ legal problems,” she says. When Gengo is not practicing law, she might be found engaged in creative pursuits. “I have been a visual artist most of my life and will be pursuing art as a second career when I retire from the practice of law,” she says.

William Harris focuses his practice on commercial real estate development. He also assists businesses with commercial leases and non-real estate clients with real estate aspects of acquisition transactions. He has served on the KinderMourn board of directors since 2011 and has served on the Brain Tumor Advisory Board at Duke University Medical Center for 26 years. Thomas Holt, managing shareholder for Bagwell Holt Smith, has been with the firm for over 30 years, anchoring the Southern Village office location in Chapel Hill. A Pennsylvania native, Holt spent several years in the field of social work before moving to Chapel Hill, where he enrolled in the University of North Carolina School of Law and earned his law degree in 1990. Katie Schwarting is recognized as the go-to lawyer in the field of servicing and special servicing for loans in the real estate sector in North Carolina. She recently moved to Seyfarth Shaw to launch the firm’s new servicing and special servicing practice, which she chairs and is based in Charlotte. Her lending-focused practice, including loan servicing and securitization work, has deepened the strength of Seyfarth’s national real estate finance group. Before joining Seyfarth, Schwarting was the office managing partner in Charlotte for Bryan Cave, where she was so highly regarded that she was asked to serve on the firm’s executive committee in addition to leading its loan servicing practice. Since becoming owner and managing partner of Vyas Realty Law in Raleigh, he has focused on growing his commercial and residential practice. As a first-year law student at Campbell University, Matt Waters was introduced to real property law by his favorite educator, Professor Jim McLaughlin. "After my first year, I worked for Professor McLaughlin, helping edit ‘Webster’s Real Estate Law in North Carolina,’” Waters says. “It was my time in Professor McLaughlin’s class and working with him during the summer that ignited my interest in real property law.” Today, Waters is a trial lawyer and member at Jordan Price, where he concentrates his practice primarily in community association law. He represents homeowners associations, including foreclosures and covenant enforcement. Water believes adaptability is the key to maintaining a successful law practice. “The legal landscape is constantly evolving, and being able to adapt to new regulations, market trends, and client needs allows me to provide effective and forward-thinking legal counsel,” he says. “Adaptability not only enhances my problem-solving skills but also ensures that I can navigate the ever-changing complexities of the legal profession.”

Andrea Wood opened The Wood Law Firm in 2010.
