INTRODUCTION MetroEast NEWS, “We seek to be a voice for those who traditionally are not heard.” What Happened to the Summer! As the month of August rounds the corner and careens us into the fall, we get to take in all that the past few months have brought to our community, and the slower days and evenings of summer remind us to simply “Bee” as we pause to remember all our community has accomplished in recent times. It gives us a brief respite before we collect ourselves and March forward to face the challenges ahead. First I want to say congratulations for the leadership of Metro East Pride 2013, who faced challenges head on and showed everyone a fantastic festival despite the monsoon which caused an early wrap-up of this summers festival. Nonetheless, I consider 2013 a great success and another fine example of how the Metro East LGBT community pulls together in tough times. Every festival over the past 6 years has been a shining example of a community that takes care of one another and reminds everyone what it’s all about. You set the stage for the largest Pride St. Louis in history and lead by example when many were in fear of changes in venue and spirit. I think everyone would agree with me to say that the summer was a festival season to remember. On a less enthusiastic note, Carbondale also faced the closing of its only gay bar and drag venue. Thanks to all those who gave the Club Traz/ Two Thirteen bar its years of service and smiles. I understand that at this point the community there too shall not be without a venue for much longer as efforts are underway to begin anew with a new venue and bar willing to devote Sunday’s to the art of impersonation. In the meantime, set your sights on some fantastic Pagentry with the Miss Gay Illinois America 2013 contestants who are converging on the Ramada Inn- Fairview Heights in just a few days! And while you have your calendar out--- save the date in October to MARCH FOR EQUALITY in Springfield. The Daniel McCree Foundation advocates for Suicide Prevention as well as outreach in the areas of HIV/AIDS awareness. We are seeking interested persons in serving the foundation, and work actively in the community of St. Louis, for the empowerment of all people. There were several causes, and organizations Daniel was active with, and the Daniel McCree Foundation, continues to work with these organizations in his honor. Sincerely,

WHY DID WE TAKE A FEW MONTHS OFF? For the first time in 6 years we did not publish for nearly four months. There were a few reasons that I decided to take a break and let others in the community shine as they should. MetroEast NEWS was publishes as a courtesy to residents of Southern Illinois and does not create any significant revenue. Our vision has always been to give voice to those items that may be overlooked or not covered anywhere else. Our foundation’s primary focus is on Suicide Prevention and in April of this year, I lost my father to suicide and somewhat lost the drive to speak for a time. Indeed the second Daniel in my life, also lost too soon. The second reason, was to allow publications such as VITAL VOICE to have their proper place during the pride season, as the official publication of Prides on both sides of the river. And to allow the hard working board and volunteers at Metro East Pride the opportunity to do what they do without having anything distracting the community from the importance of UNITY for everyone that calls Southern Illinois home. They work all year long to put together one day for everyone to enjoy, and I did not want to detract from that effort in any way. The final reason I declare is that my work on other projects as a resident of Joplin, MO did not lend me the time to aggregate all the information that it takes to put together the publication each month. As we move forward, I welcome anyone who would be 1 Ryder Sweet at THE LAST DANCE ( TwoThirteen interested in becoming a contributor or photographer of news Carbondale) and events specific to the Metro East Region. It is an outreach I still feel needs fulfilled and frankly if we don’t continue in some fashion it shall perhaps leave many events and conversations unsaid. I think my dear friend Daniel McCree would say “if a drum is all you have… you beat that drum until someone listens” So the beat goes on. I personally thank all the organizations that have sponsored the publication over the years, and know that as the editor I receive as much grace as this little project gives out. I am forever fond of the Southern Illinois Community and all that it has to offer and continues to provide to anyone fortunate enough to live there. So look thru this issue and keep an eye out for issues that are certain to continue as long as I have the calling to do so. And again THANK YOU!

The Southern Illinois Roller Girls (AKA SO ILL Roller Girls, AKA SIRG) is the only women's roller derby team in Southern Illinois and competes at The Pavilion in Marion. The league was founded in June 2009 by a group of women from the area and So Ill Roller Girls had their first public scrimmage in December 2009, and their first official home bout in April 2010. It was accepted into the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice Program in January 2011, and became a full member of the WFTDA in January 2012. The Roller Girls currently play at The Pavilion of the City of Marion, located at 1602 Sioux Drive, Marion, IL. Their regular bouting season runs from March until November.

Q&A: Alliance for Gender and Sexual Diversity (SWIC)
Barbara Hunter is this month’s “unsung hero” for her many years as the faculty advisor and Safe-Zone coordinator at Southwestern Illinois College Campus in Belleville. Chances are if you are an LGBT student or ally in Belleville or have attended SWIC in the past few years, Barbara is no stranger. She is the continuity year after year for the Q&A Alliance group which has been growing and offering a safe space for LGBT students and allies for the past 5 years. Together with the student lead and developed programs, Barbara serves alongside students as they organize campus events, and community outreach projects throughout the school year. Q&A Alliance is a strong community group, that Belleville and others in the community may not be aware of, but rest assured they can be counted on to participation in World AIDS Day events, National Coming Out Day, as well as a first line of defense in Suicide prevention and peer-counseling and support for any youth in the Metro East Region. We are proud to have such devoted people to shine a spotlight on, and Barb Hunter is long overdue for a little bit of recognition and kudos for her hard work and accolades for the accomplishments she has been a part of over the past few years. Join Gateway M.C. for the 30th anniversary of one of the longest running leather contests anywhere. It's an entire weekend of leather with out of town folks from all over converging on St. Louis for the festivities.

Gateway MC promotes brotherhood among its members and members of the Levi/leather community by engaging in a variety of activities. Each month Gateway has a business meeting in a bar, at a park, or at members' homes. For over twenty years we have hosted our annual Mr. Missouri Leather contest, the winner of which competes at IML. We have also hosted Fantasy and Drummer contests. The winner of our first Drummer contest, Woody Bebout, went on to become International Mr. Drummer. We host a large anniversary run each October, welcoming 100 to 200 guests. We are known for the variety of our run activities and our original shows. We also attend runs hosted by other Levi/leather clubs, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood in the Midwest and across the country. At our run, our leather contests, and some of our other events, we raise money for a variety of AIDS service organizations in the St. Louis area, including The St. Louis Effort for AIDS, Doorways Interfaith Residence, and Food Outreach. We raise money for our club and promote brotherhood by hosting club nights at our home bar and at bars in other cities. Since coming to JJs we have hosted some three-way club nights with the Show-Me Bears and Blue Max CC. We also welcome out-of-town clubs to host club nights at our home bar. In the last few years we have raised additional funds by cooking and serving spaghetti dinners throughout the year. We engage in other events, such as our annual Weenie Roast camp-out weekend with the other St. Louis clubs, and bar social nights just for the fun of it. Occasionally, we publish a newsletter called "The Gear," which is sent to all members and associates, and to other clubs around the country. Although members may have a variety of interests and engage in a variety of activities, Gateway MC is not a sex club, an S&M club, or a fetish club, nor does it promote specific political philosophies.

Rainbow Cafe LGBT Youth Center The Southern IL AIDS Candlelight Memorial & Mobilization Service will be held on Sunday, April 28 at 6:30pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 515 S. Orchard Drive, Carbondale. Father Joseph Brown is the guest speaker, and a reception will follow the service. Notable Passages Danl Voigt (August 14, 2013) Longtime St. Louis resident and community member shall be missed by many who had the pleasure of knowing him. As a former member of the Knights of Pythias I the 1990’s, Danl was known throughout the community both personally and professionally. Funeral arrangement details are not yet available.

Thoughts from a Mouthy Saint- "Today I Will Remember to Keep My Word" By-Colby Kluthe, MetroEast NEWS About a decade ago, I was living in Las Vegas, Nevada and one advantage of the locale was that I met my partner of nearly ten years Chad and his long-time friend Jan, who recently passed away. When I met them they spent Tuesday evenings at "A place for Miracles", the home office of spiritual guru Bijan, who has many books and seminars he offers as he travels the world teaching the concept of effortless prosperity. While Bijan makes his money by traveling, those who live locally can participate at no cost as he offered groups at his Nevada facility. I was blessed to join Chad and Jan in this Tuesday tradition for several months. Effortless Prosperity (EP) is the idea that we already have all that we need, and we simply must call it into existence and claim it in order to share our blessings with others. Learning to practice EP is as simple as taking a moment each day to meditate and remember that fear is simply an illusion and has no place is our lives if we dare to let go of its control over our day to day emotions. A different meditation for 30 days repeats itself over and over, and is available to anyone who wishes to bring the EP lifestyle into their own spiritual existence. Each of the thirty meditations always ends with one simple theme... "Today I will Remember to Keep My Word". Its a simple phrase that at times can clearly present a challenge to live up to. However It has provided me a guiding light for many years in determining how I lead my own life, and choose others to share my life with. Daniel rephrased the concept as "True Bees", which you may have heard me refer to before. It means simply I choose those whom I surround myself with and I choose ONLY those who strive to do what they say, and live daily by at least attempting to live up to promises made and promises kept. Leaving alone the 30 day meditations, the shared concept of keeping one's word is enough to start with, and will undoubtedly change your life when you begin to live in such a way. I watch what I say, and I remember to do whatever I have said I will do. And often enough, as life is, I fall short of the mark, and find myself in situations that serve to remind me to get back to this simple concept. Whenever I do manage to keep my word, blessings seem to fall from every direction and when I fail to keep my word, my climb seems to steepen and the distance gets longer.
In short, the secret to the spiritual life of "The Mouthy Saint" - a simple promise and goal. "Today I will remember to keep my word". It guides me and shows me very clearly those in my life are good for me and those I need to let follow a different path. I challenge you for the remainder of summer to simply remember this one concept, and see for yourself how it has the power to transform both you and those around you.
