New DAF CFs head to HW Martin Waste

T

he waste and recycling operation of the diverse Martin Group of Companies, based near Alfreton, Derbyshire, has taken one DAF CF 460 FAT six-wheel draw bar units and two CF 460 FAD eight-wheel hookloader as completion of its 15-strong order for DAF trucks in 2017. The vehicles are partly for fleet replacement, but overall the HW Martin Waste fleet has grown by some 35% this year. Speaking about the acquisitions, Geoff Kearsley, Operations Manager of the group’s vehicle and plant maintenance division, HW Martin (Plant) Ltd, which specifies, acquires and maintains the group’s fleet, said: “We have a very diverse fleet of over 300 vehicles, from vans to 44t tractor units. It means we have run a wide range of marques over the years, but I don’t think we have ever had a more successful fleet introduction of a new vehicle

in terms of reliability and driveability than these New CF DAFs with their Harsh hook-lift equipment in all the years I have been here.” HW Martin Waste Ltd handles and markets thousands of tonnes of recyclable materials every year. The company has long-term contracts with local authorities across the country, which include the management and operation of household waste recycling centres and the processing of mixed recyclable materials from street collections. Private sector contracts are also delivered through its subsidiary Premier Waste Recycling Ltd. HW Martin Waste Ltd’s bulk haulage operations use articulated, drawbar and hook-lift vehicles to meet the company’s varied requirements, and it is in this demanding sector the new DAFs and the earlier arrivals will work. The three new trucks

are all Euro 6 460 models. Kearsley says they are ‘comfortable and quiet’, which he sees as important in terms of driver acceptance. “Driver behaviour is key to the success of your operations,” he adds. “We are very focused on road safety and compliance and these are all inter-linked.” Important as this is, he also takes a very keen interest in the other side of the equation, overall operating costs. Happy drivers always contribute to fleet economy, but Kearsley confirms: “Behind all those concerns, you have to have two other elements – economy and reliability – and over the years our DAFs have delivered both. The latest Euro-6 trucks are already even more economical than the Euro-5 models, and have settled in with very few teething problems, so these factors have been a real bonus in terms of operating costs.” ●

DVLA announces guidelines for sleep apnoea For those with untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) – believed to be around 1.4 million people in the UK alone – their sleep is disturbed. In the case of severe OSA, people with the condition can wake up hundreds of times a night without realising. As a result, they are likely to wake up still feeling sleepy, not understanding why. For those who drive for their living, whether an HGV, coach or van driver, feeling tired when you wake up means that you may well fall asleep at the wheel, which is dangerous for both themselves and other road users. 4

In January 2016 a new EU Directive changed the DVLA requirements for reporting OSA and this caused considerable confusion to both healthcare professionals and patients. However, following discussions with the DVLA, there have been some changes to the guidance provided for medical professionals when assessing whether a patient should drive, and whether they should contact the DVLA. What the changes mean: • If a driver is diagnosed with OSA but does not have excessive sleepiness, having or likely

to have, an adverse effect on driving, they may continue to drive as normal and do not need to notify the DVLA. • If a driver has sleepiness that does have an adverse effect on driving, and it is suspected that they might have OSA, they should stop driving but do not have to notify the DVLA until the diagnosis has been confirmed. Once a diagnosis of OSA is confirmed, the driver must stop driving and must notify the DVLA. If in doubt, we recommend that you refer to your sleep specialist who will be able to advise you. ●

Dealer reopens after fire D

AF Trucks commercial vehicle dealer, Imperial Commercials, reopened for business in April after its staff responded ‘heroically’ when fire swept through a neighbouring business at its Wellesbourne Park location in Warwick. Keeping customers’ trucks rolling was the key focus for Imperial Commercials as staff were redeployed to other locations in a battle to ensure a seamless service for truck operators. The building adjacent to Imperial Commercials was completely destroyed during the fire, at the same time as quickthinking Imperial Commercials staff, led by Service Team Leader, Jim Powell, executed an emergency evacuation procedure ensuring all employees were accounted for with no injuries sustained. With the imminent threat to personal safety averted, staff worked tirelessly to ensure customer services were largely

unaffected, with work quickly transferred to Imperial Commercials’ nearby locations at Garretts Green, Halesowen and Worcester. Incident Commanders from Warwickshire Fire & Rescue reported that, ‘Jim and his team had done an excellent job in moving customers’ vehicles and other items that could otherwise have compromised the firefighting efforts’. Although having sustained serious smokerelated and minor structural damage, Imperial Commercials’ Wellesbourne Park facility remained closed until a full clean-up and decontamination work was completed. All relevant staff had been redeployed to other Imperial Commercials sites with phones diverted accordingly. It reopened for ‘business as usual’ on Monday 9th April, exactly a month after the fire. “I am deeply impressed with the conduct of our Wellesbourne Park staff, it’s been nothing short of a heroic effort by everyone,” said

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) controlled barriers monitor vehicles entering and leaving the site,

providing full traceability and security for owners and operators. Brand new showers and toilets have been installed offering drivers a clean and comfortable place to rest and relax before getting back on the road. Payment can be made online prior to entering the site or you can pay once inside. Payments can be made through SNAP account. All other major payment types are also accepted. “This is not only great news for HGV drivers

The Super Space cab of the rear lift 6x2 includes a host of driver safety and comfort features, while its Boniface body and the latest Mk.6 ‘K-Boom’ lifting equipment make it one of the most sophisticated recovery units in the UK. he DAF Driver Challenge is back! For the last four months, DAF Trucks has been searching the country for the UK’s best drivers to put to the test in the ultimate truck driving challenge. After hundreds of entries, just 20 drivers have been chosen to take part in the live event at Millbrook Proving Grounds on 19th and 20th May. The drivers will be tasked with eight unique challenges, testing them on their ability both on and off-road. To oversee each challenge, we have a team of six expert judges from within the DAF Driver Training network. In 2016, DAF Driver Challenge winner, Paul Barlow had this to say: “I knew it was going to be tough, but I didn’t expect it to be quite so comprehensive – every aspect of the job came under scrutiny. DAF Trucks’ organisers weren’t joking when they said they wanted to find someone with the whole package.” Now for 2018 DAF Trucks have upped the game.

Across the two day event finalist for 2018 will be expected to demonstrate excellence in: Driving style, performance and efficiency across different sizes of truck and driving conditions; Road knowledge, legislation and the highway code and vehicle knowledge, defect reporting and pre-use checks.

Mark Bullock Starting his career in the warehouse of a parcel firm, Mark applied for his class 1 off his own back and has never looked back. Mark has been Lancashire DAF’s Handover Specialist and Driver Trainer for the last six years. Safe and fuel efficient driving, as well as skill behind the wheel, is what Mark believes will make a DAF Driver Champion.

allet services operator 2MV Logistics has added two DAF New XF 480 FTG tractors to its fleet at its Portsmouth base. The company says the reason for the investment is down to consistent growth, which has seen the total fleet rise to 20 vehicles. The decision to go with DAF was helped by the fact that the company has an earlier DAF tractor that is still going strong, having covered 1.35m kilometres.

“We know we are a relatively small player in the world of logistics, but, with our fleet profile further boosted by these modern 6x2 mid-steer DAF units, we are attracting more and more business from a loyal and growing customer base,” says Managing Director, Jim Tyler. “Customers like to know they are dealing with a successful and progressive operator and these trucks show that to be the case. Also, we have modern premises in

Farlington, on the edge of Portsmouth, that offer clean and secure storage as well as a great base for our fleet.” Tyler says he is looking forward to a potential 7% fuel economy improvement, he is also keen to add DAFs to the fleet. “2MV Logistics is not an exclusively DAF fleet at the moment, but we’ve run DAF rigids for some time on our pallet service – we were a very early member of TPN, The

pallets going out and another 200 coming in through its base every night. “It has been a big driver for us in our general expansion, though the international side is also taking off strongly now” says Tyler, who got into the business by working for another logistics provider after leaving school at 16. “I remember vividly having a customer on the phone asking for something that we were saying we

The New CF 8x4s are being fitted for London Concrete with the latest lightweight drum technology to assist with payload performance. The cabs are the standard DAF day cab, which Carter says is ideal for the job. Other marques currently on the fleet, while he rates them in basic engineering terms, have ‘heavy’ cabs, he says, and back-up can be ‘poor’. Drivers get a choice, but at the moment the choice is firmly in favour of DAF, with the cabs coming fully equipped with climate control. “Our drivers deserve the best we can afford to give them,” he explains. “They have some tough conditions to cope with, so the more we can do to keep them comfortable and avoid unnecessary fatigue, the better able they are to do their job safely on sites and out on the road. The DAFs have a great turning circle as well, so all in all these trucks are right where they need to be in every respect.” London Concrete’s DAF fleet maintenance is largely taken care of by supplying DAF dealer, HTC Heathrow, of whom, Head of Operations & Transport, Douglas Antingham, says, “DAF back-up service is second to none, and the team at HTC looks after us very well indeed. We never seem to have to ask for favours, everything we need gets scheduled in as and when we need it and the quality is top-notch.” •

The New CF 8x4s are being fitted for London Concrete with the latest lightweight drum technology to assist with payload performance. The cabs are the standard DAF day cab, which Carter says is ideal for the job. Other marques currently on the fleet, while he rates them in basic engineering terms, have ‘heavy’ cabs, he says, and back-up can be ‘poor’. Drivers get a choice, but at the moment the choice is firmly in favour of DAF, with the cabs coming fully equipped with climate control. “Our drivers deserve the best we can afford to give them,” he explains. “They have some tough conditions to cope with, so the more we can do to keep them comfortable and avoid unnecessary fatigue, the better able they are to do their job safely on sites and out on the road. The DAFs have a great turning circle as well, so all in all these trucks are right where they need to be in every respect.” London Concrete’s DAF fleet maintenance is largely taken care of by supplying DAF dealer, HTC Heathrow, of whom, Head of Operations & Transport, Douglas Antingham, says, “DAF back-up service is second to none, and the team at HTC looks after us very well indeed. We never seem to have to ask for favours, everything we need gets scheduled in as and when we need it and the quality is top-notch.” •

With a fast-growing commercial focus among public sector services around the country, Hampshire County Council has grabbed the headlines in a deal that sees it take ownership and control of its Highways vehicle fleet, while continuing to outsource its Highways Maintenance programme.

H

ampshire County Council’s Transport Management department (HTM) has bought 86 DAF vehicles to form its new Highways Maintenance fleet. HTM will maintain the vehicles at its five regional workshops, though all will be operated by Skanska, which has been awarded the highways maintenance contract. The trucks range from 7.5-tonne tippers to 26-tonne gritter/ snowploughs, all supplied through the Southampton DAF dealership

The dealer was closely involved from the start in helping HTM ensure the commercial edge to the deal. “We looked at a wide range of vehicle manufacturers, but eventually it became clear DAF had both the range and the local support we needed,” said HTM Head and the Council’s Transport Manager, Andrew Ellis. “The council already ran some 14-tonne DAF box-vans on its County Supplies Fleet, so we knew they were robust, reliable and easy to maintain. In our work

we can’t afford to have vehicles unexpectedly off the road for any length of time, so this experience was an important factor.” However, HTM’s team had its work cut out on the pricing of the whole deal. Three contractors were bidding for the highways work, which, with the supply of vehicles and services being proposed to them by HTM to provide and maintain the fleet, involved well over 600 quotes of varying complexity. At that time, the problem was significantly

compounded by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union. Uncertainty over the future was producing a highly unpredictable market place, with an upward impact on vehicle prices at exactly the time all the budgeting work had to be done. “We were focusing on three manufacturers at that stage, and some of them were giving us upward of 20% price increases as we were going along, without any guarantees of what the prices might actually be once we were

ready to place orders,” recalls Ellis. “We were trying to build a major commercial plan that had to show a return for the County Council through our fleet management, and one of the most critical factors was in this highly volatile state. Fortunately, we were slowly building a strong partnership approach with Adams Morey. They were the one manufacturer’s dealership that seemed to understand the complexity of what we were trying to do, and they worked hard with us to identify

the right chassis, specs and, most importantly, budgets we could rely on for the time when we might want to place orders. They forecast future prices we could believe in, and ultimately they delivered them.” Keep on running Hampshire County Council runs five workshops to maintain its range of vans and trucks. They are run for Ellis by Area Workshop Manager, Stewart Stephens. Prior to the latest agreement, Stephens

had been maintaining a mixed fleet of DAF, Mercedes and Iveco on the truck side. Closely involved in the initial product assessment alongside Ellis, as part of the rigorous ongoing cost/benefit analysis Stephens is currently handling a tender process for long-term parts supply. “I have seen a lot of good progress over my 30 years with the Council, but this new programme is easily the biggest jump forward from my perspective,” he explained. “The ability to focus on a single brand

of truck makes maintenance and repair far simpler. For my money, DAFs are far and away the easiest to work on, and that means less costly, so we are contributing well to the overall commercial plan.” Once again, talking to Stephens, the Adams Morey relationship came up. The whole fleet is on the road and, even in the most recent harsh weather conditions, has performed well. “There’s no doubt the ‘Beasts from the East’ tested us and the new fleet. That we coped, and coped well, is a testament to both the DAF pedigree and the hard work of Stewart and his teams.” Getting the vehicles on the road was a joint effort between the manufacturer, dealer and Hants CC, said Ellis. “One of the great

things we were able to achieve was a pricing structure at point of order that matched very closely with our budget plan, and a very great deal of that was down to the manufacturer and the hard work of Adams Morey. They responded well to our request for long-range pricing right from the start, enabling us to deliver the deal we wanted. As to the physical deliveries, we knew from past experience that DAF delivers pretty much on time. When they say they will build trucks in a certain week or weeks, they tend to live up to that. It was central to putting a fleet like this on the road.” •

LITTLE LINCS GEM David Parkinson has restored one of the prettiest old-timers we’ve seen for ages. The 110bhp DAF 2100 was acquired by DP Packaging, the Spalding-based contract packing and storage company, in 1980 when the truck was 12-months old. Despite having just 260,000kms under its belt, David told DDM that JAY 891V had a hard life on intensive, local drop deliveries. The truck fell into disrepair before David and his pal, retired vehicle painter, Norman Smith, lavished the vehicle with love and affection to restore it to its former glory. We were pleased to learn that, despite a new fuel system and starter motor, the naturally-aspirated long-stroke engine turned over first time! LITTLE LINCS GEM David Parkinson has restored one of the prettiest old-timers we’ve seen for ages. The 110bhp DAF 2100 was acquired by DP Packaging, the Spalding-based contract packing and storage company, in 1980 when the truck was 12-months old. Despite having just 260,000kms under its belt, David told DDM that JAY 891V had a hard life on intensive, local drop deliveries. The truck fell into disrepair before David and his pal, retired vehicle painter, Norman Smith, lavished the vehicle with love and affection to restore it to its former glory. We were pleased to learn that, despite a new fuel system and starter motor, the naturally-aspirated long-stroke engine turned over first time! Seven months later, and after a couple of trips to Holland to source parts, JAY 891V is a stunning example of a classic DAF 2100. We just love the smart beige-and-red livery.

All are great additions to an ever-expanding fleet of 1/50 collectables. The 1/87 scale sees the addition of a DAF CF with bulk tipping tanker and an XF Space Cab with low loader. he latest versions of the well-proven DAF XF and CF ranges were introduced last year. While the same basic cab shells have been retained once again, the respective drivelines have been extensively updated and reworked to both improve performance, fuel economy and long-term durability. The changes were considered radical enough for the Dutch manufacturer to win the International Truck of the Year 2018 award with both ranges, despite the original cab designs dating from 1987 for the XF and 1992 for the CF. Over the years various journalists and commentators have questioned the decision to stick with the original cab designs, but the ongoing success and popularity of the DAF product in the majority of markets, especially the UK, shows the manufacturer does understand its customer base. There can be few C+E LGV drivers in the UK who have yet to spend at least a day or so at the wheel of a DAF tractor unit, even if it was just as an agency driver with a well-worn CF that had been through the hands of dozens of other drivers, let alone an XF Super Space Cab with all the toys. The one characteristic almost all the versions share is that they are userfriendly, aided by a straightforward control layout. And even the base models have a reasonable level of comfort. As a result, driver acceptance has always been good, and the manufacturer has updated the design and specification in response to market demand and the activities of the competition. The same applies from an operator’s perspective. The complete DAF range generally meets the needs of most operators, and it is possible to tune the specification for numerous applications. Generally the trucks do a good job. DAF tends to follow a fairly conservative path in terms of technical innovation, introducing updated technology only when it has proven itself and has shown to offer tangible long-term benefits. But the policy has changed slightly with some aspects of the latest models’ drivelines, particularly in terms of engine performance characteristics and final drive ratios. Another key feature in the manufacturer’s long-term success is the relative strength and stability of the dealer network and the practical and effective aftermarket support services it offers, particularly parts supply and roadside breakdown cover. Obviously, there are operators who would disagree with these statements and have had issues, but overall we find DAF tends to have more satisfied customers than most of its competitors. The truck we drove for nearly two weeks was a dealer demonstrator, lent to the operator by the local agent, rather than a carefully prepared press fleet vehicle. It had just 28,000km on the clock when it arrived and was remarkably free from knocks and scrapes. It pulled a mixture of fridge, curtainsider and Euroliner trailers of various heights, all within the UK, on a mixture of routes ranging from the West Country to central Scotland, at gross weights between 26 and 44 tonnes.

From the outside, the most visible differences are the additional metal strip on the sun visor and the extra brightwork on the slightly redesigned grille and bumper. Other clues are the smaller exhaust system mounted on the offside, which frees up space for a hydraulic tank or other equipment, and a new air deflector kit design. By the end of the trial period we have become quite adept at spotting the new models, and have even received respectful knowing nods from other New Generation XF drivers. The positive twin-steer layout follows early versions and retains a mechanical linkage via the proven system of relay arms and steering idler, rather than having a hydraulic system that relies upon sensors on the front axle and a hydraulic ram acting upon the second steer. This would free up chassis space and reduce unladen weight a little. While hydraulic steering systems are used on certain DAF rigids and generally work well, the mechanical system is well proven and meets most operators’ needs, although we do notice the XF has a relatively poor lock compared with most competitors. The 490-litre aluminium fuel tank is mounted on the nearside, as is the 90-litre plastic AdBlue tank, which is shaped to fit between the cab floor and the wheelarch. Considerable attention has been paid to increased engine brake performance, particularly at lower engine revs rating of 19 tonnes split 7.5/11.5 tonnes, which is more than enough for most applications, and works well. The electronic control system has been updated, with greater control over imposed axle weights with optional dash display, and weight transfer to aid traction at reduced speeds, along with a more sophisticated hand control. The steel suspended front axle is plated at 8 tonnes and runs on the standard 315/70R22.5 tyres. Options include 7.5- and 9-tonne capacities. Front air suspension is not listed as an option on the specification sheet, but it is listed on the rear-steer tag-axle tractor (FTN). It might well be offered on other models as a special order option. DAF offers a range of axle layouts, including 4x2 standard and lowheight, 6x2 twin-steer and tags of various capacities, and 6x4 and 8x4 tridem layouts. There is no longer a conventional pusher-axle option listed, only the lightweight FTP tractor. The XF range is offered with both the MX13 and smaller capacity MX11 engines. Our truck has the new 480hp middle rating of the MX13 range (the others being 430hp and 530hp). The one MX11 variant offered in the XF is the top power 450hp version. Both motors have been extensively reworked, featuring new pistons, new variable geometry turbochargers and combustion systems. Steering and water pumps have been redesigned to lower parasitic drag when the truck is cruising, reducing fuel consumption and aiding efficiency. Once again, a combination of SCR, cooled EGR and regenerative DPF are used to control emissions. The smaller exhaust system also contributes to an overall reduction in unladen weight of 100kg. In practice, these changes have considerably altered the performance characteristics of the 12.9-litre MX13. The engines are downspeeded, which should reduce wear and prolong service life. Maximum torque is now generated from 900rpm with the 430hp and 480hp versions. This is maintained up to 1,365rpm in the intermediate gears but is boosted by an additional 150Nm in top gear – or the top two ratios if fitted with an overdrive gearbox. The increased torque is held between 900rpm and 1,125rpm, which corresponds with the maximum cruising speed of 90km/h if fitted with the standard diff ratio of 2.05:1 when running on 70-series tyres. The extra torque allows the truck to dig in and hold top gear on most moderate gradients. The 480hp version produces 2,350Nm in the lower ratios, with 2,500Nm in top gear with the standard direct-drive transmission. The top-rated 530hp engine produces maximum power at a slightly higher 1,675rpm, and 2,500Nm between 1,000rpm and 1,425rpm in the intermediate gears. It achieves 2,600Nm over a wider 1,000rpm to 1,460rpm rev band in top gear, which probably gives more scope for 30 DAF Driver // Truckfest Special 2018

Another key component in DAF’s new driveline is the ZF TraXon automated transmission, available in 12- and 16-speed form

lower overall gearing for high gross weight applications. Considerable attention has been paid to increased engine brake performance, particularly at lower engine revs. The new MX engine brake, working in conjunction with the exhaust brake, now uses technology supplied by Eaton. Rather than the Jacobs-based system used previously, it now acts upon just one valve per cylinder and works in conjunction with the variable geometry turbocharger to increase pressures and gas flow at lower revs. The net effect is similar performance at high engine revs to the old system, but much improved braking power and torque between 1,000rpm and 1,500rpm. A ZF Intarder is available as an option and can be specified in conjunction with the MX engine brake if required. The bigger radiator and grille aperture introduced at Euro-6 will no doubt aid cooling if a retarder is fitted. Cooling could be an issue with the older XF105 and other earlier versions as the trucks aged, unless the radiator cores were cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis. Another key component in DAF’s new driveline is the ZF TraXon automated transmission, available in 12- and 16-speed form. The new gearbox replaces the AS-Tronic automated gearbox. TraXon offers a wider ratio spread with deeper first and reverse gears, faster gear-shifting and gear selection at a standstill, along with far better low-speed clutch control and take-up of drive, which were always two main areas of criticism of the previous generation. The lowspeed manoeuvring modes are retained, along with a more sensitive clutch actuation system similar to that used in the Volvo I-Shift. We are told that space constraints with the AS-Tronic’s bell housing prevented this system from being used.

Now, this new combination of clutch control, lower ratios and advanced software allows the use of very high overall gearing without compromising low-speed control. A 16-speed manual is available as an option, but the previous 12-speed manual has been dropped. We anticipate that the new automated TraXon will be specified for the majority of applications, even for certain heavy-haulage operations, with the option of 16 speeds and bespoke software for this role.

The latest XF uses new wiring and connectors, with centralised control units in the front and rear of the chassis. Also, an enhanced DAF Connect fleet management system, using truck telemetry to monitor all aspects of vehicle and driver performance, is now offered. Other changes have been made to the cab interior to improve comfort and vehicle build quality, which we will look at in another section. Cab comfort/living with the truck While the basic DAF XF cab shell might be getting on a bit compared with the competition, it is still a comfortable place to live and work in, especially in Super Space form, which speaks volumes about the quality of the original Truckfest Special 2018 // DAF Driver 31

lower overall gearing for high gross weight applications. Considerable attention has been paid to increased engine brake performance, particularly at lower engine revs. The new MX engine brake, working in conjunction with the exhaust brake, now uses technology supplied by Eaton. Rather than the Jacobs-based system used previously, it now acts upon just one valve per cylinder and works in conjunction with the variable geometry turbocharger to increase pressures and gas flow at lower revs. The net effect is similar performance at high engine revs to the old system, but much improved braking power and torque between 1,000rpm and 1,500rpm. A ZF Intarder is available as an option and can be specified in conjunction with the MX engine brake if required. The bigger radiator and grille aperture introduced at Euro-6 will no doubt aid cooling if a retarder is fitted. Cooling could be an issue with the older XF105 and other earlier versions as the trucks aged, unless the radiator cores were cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis. Another key component in DAF’s new driveline is the ZF TraXon automated transmission, available in 12- and 16-speed form. The new gearbox replaces the AS-Tronic automated gearbox. TraXon offers a wider ratio spread with deeper first and reverse gears, faster gear-shifting and gear selection at a standstill, along with far better low-speed clutch control and take-up of drive, which were always two main areas of criticism of the previous generation. The lowspeed manoeuvring modes are retained, along with a more sensitive clutch actuation system similar to that used in the Volvo I-Shift. We are told that space constraints with the AS-Tronic’s bell housing prevented this system from being used.

Now, this new combination of clutch control, lower ratios and advanced software allows the use of very high overall gearing without compromising low-speed control. A 16-speed manual is available as an option, but the previous 12-speed manual has been dropped. We anticipate that the new automated TraXon will be specified for the majority of applications, even for certain heavy-haulage operations, with the option of 16 speeds and bespoke software for this role.

The latest XF uses new wiring and connectors, with centralised control units in the front and rear of the chassis. Also, an enhanced DAF Connect fleet management system, using truck telemetry to monitor all aspects of vehicle and driver performance, is now offered. Other changes have been made to the cab interior to improve comfort and vehicle build quality, which we will look at in another section. Cab comfort/living with the truck While the basic DAF XF cab shell might be getting on a bit compared with the competition, it is still a comfortable place to live and work in, especially in Super Space form, which speaks volumes about the quality of the original Truckfest Special 2018 // DAF Driver 31

There is a new heating and ventilation system, new interior lights with an integrated control and revisions to the seats and cab trim. Our truck has the optional Exclusive Line cab package, which includes high specification leather seats and door trims. The seats are comfortable, with ample adjustment, although we would like a split backrest adjustment feature to give more support to the shoulders. Two armrests would be better still. The driving position still works well, with a clear view of the dash and well-placed controls. It is possible to relocate switches to suit personal taste by simply lifting them from one position and clicking them into another. The electrical system automatically recognises the new location and adjusts accordingly. Cab access is good, with three steps and decent grab handles. Steering column travel is slightly limited, which does restrict cross-cab access slightly, but getting to the passenger seat or bunk is easy enough. Vision is reasonable, but the windscreen seems shallow when compared with more modern competitors. The mirrors and relatively thick screen pillars do create blind spots, but it is better with the one-piece side window. We always double-check the nearside view before pulling out of a junction with a DAF. The ride and handling are very good. Our truck has the optional cab air suspension, which is well damped, with minimal roll through bends. The DAF handles poor road surfaces far better than a Mercedes-Benz Actros we drove the week previously, gliding over ruts and bumps that would throw us out of the seat with the German truck. The smooth ride and low noise levels make for a relaxing drive, and the interior is better finished than in the past. Older DAFs creaked and rattled increasingly as they aged. This new model is far better, even when the engine is pulling hard at very low revs. There is a slight tremor in the dash area at certain speeds/revs, but it is minimal considering that the engine is running so slowly. Our truck has the upgraded ATC (automatic temperature control system), which integrates the air conditioning and heating systems and can be left to its own devices via the automated setting. It works well, with an even distribution of air and no cold spots in the footwell. All XFs now have a conventional night heater system that operates via the dash and screen vents, and an additional short-stop heater that uses residual heat from the cooling system to warm the cab for up to an hour. It is useful when taking a 45-minute break on a cold day. The revised lighting is also very good, with a graduated control and a master switch on the sleeper control panel. It is a big improvement, particularly when studying paperwork in the winter gloom. The dash display has improved graphics and it is easier to access journey/ performance data. The combined radio/ infotainment/sat-nav system works well and is userfriendly – well, we could understand

it, more or less. The radio volume reduces automatically as the truck slows, but the engine noise is so low in any case that we find the radio almost inaudible at standstill. Cab storage has always been a feature of the Super Space Cab, and this is no different, with large overhead lockers and ample space under the bunk. We sleep well in the XF; there is more than enough room for any size driver, and the bunk is just at the right height to sit on when getting dressed. The curtains keep the light out and the control panel on the rear wall has a comprehensive range of functions. While it is possible to criticise some aspects of the venerable DAF cab, it is still one of the most comfortable places to live in for a week or more. Driveability We were interested to see how the ultrahigh gearing of the new XF actually worked in practice, and we were sceptical to begin with. Previous experience with very high ratio final drives has shown they can make some vehicles sluggish and difficult to drive in more challenging terrain. Often it has required a 16-litre engine to cope at 44 tonnes, especially if used in conjunction with an overdrive top gear. Some of the 13-litre Scanias we have driven with this combination spent most of the day in 11th gear once off the motorway and on rural roads – fine at cruising speeds, but a pain otherwise. Other manufacturers have used engine electronics to boost torque output in top gear. Renault and MAN offered it for a while on their 13-litre engines, but with more conventional gearing. DAF has taken a bold step, but the use of variable geometry turbochargers and the fast-changing TraXon gearbox makes the principle work well in most applications, despite the engine only turning over at just under 1,150rpm at 56mph. It does take a while to get used to this, because with the engine at such low revs there is very little noise, which gives the impression that the engine will require a downshift as soon as it encounters an uphill gradient. Driver education will be an important part of any New XF handover. But a careful eye on both the rev counter and speedometer shows that the truck actually holds its speed as the torque increases accordingly. If the hill gets steeper the revs drop below 1,000rpm, but the engine continues to dig in and it generally changes into 11th gear at about 950rpm. This brings the revs up to just over 1,300rpm, and the engine pulls strongly. On a really long motorway bank it drops another gear at around 1,000rpm/1,050rpm, but the variable geometry turbo quickly builds up boost pressure and it soon upshifts as the gradient eases. In fact, we find that trucks with similar power ratings start to catch us slightly on some hills, but we begin to pull away appreciably at the crest. The MX is similar to the Iveco Cursor engine in this respect; the ability to build up revs quickly and grab the next gear gives it the characteristics of a bigger capacity motor. Iveco also offers a relatively high 2.47:1 diff ratio with certain Stralis XP models. DAF has taken the concept a stage further with its 2.05:1 ratio with the MX13. The XF has three transmission modes in standard form: auto/eco, auto/eco off and manual, and these can be restricted to suit operator requirements. We tend to use the auto/eco mode unless joining a busy road on an uphill section, or at the foot of a long hill at full weight. In these situations, knocking off the eco mode allows the truck to rev just a bit more in order to gain speed. The eco function is more forgiving than on previous XFs. Before, progress could become a little sedate as engine output was restricted in order to boost economy. This was fine when you had time to spare, but frustrating when chasing a deadline. We rarely feel the need to use manual mode, even when dealing with a moderate snowfall in Scotland, just using it occasionally to hold a gear for a moment. The clutch control and low-speed control is now superb, in fact as good as anything else on the market and better than most, and it is possible to inch the truck backwards and forwards. This, along with the instant engagement of gears, is a world apart from the old model. The truck is much more controllable in a confined space, making it possible to pay more attention to the view in every direction. We would go as far to say that the improved transmission goes some way in overcoming any potential shortcomings the DAF cab may have in terms of vision. Just to be sure about this, we have a quick drive in a 16-plate Euro-6 XF with the AS-Tronic transmission, and the difference is marked. We also find that the new engine brake is effective right through the rev range. The column-mounted control has four settings, which allows careful graduation of the braking power. It takes a moment or so for the braking power to build up, but on a couple of steep gradients on the A37 south of Bristol, we find the fourth stage combined with the autodownshifting feature is slowing the laden outfit too much and almost bringing it to a standstill, which is impressive when considering the truck’s high overall gearing. Overall, we think the new driveline in this form is the right choice for most applications. We are impressed by how well it works in practice, but trucks that spend most of their time on rural roads at full weight would probably benefit from a lower axle ratio. It would allow the truck to run in top gear more often, and would make it easier to regulate speed with high centre of gravity loads such as timber or livestock. In these applications it is important to be able to balance the truck when entering a bend and then accelerate out of the curve to overcome the shifting centre of gravity. ●

he New DAF Range wasn’t the only new kid on the block in 2017. With the ever-increasing demand for training support from our customers we needed an extra pair of experienced hands on board. As a result, Ron Smith joined the DAF team in a driver training role specifically designed to support the needs of the larger national fleets, many of whom have their own in-house driver trainers, who need to be kept bang up to date. I’m delighted he’s part of the team. Meet Ron Smith “Before DAF I worked for 10 years as a driver, followed by another 10 years as a training manager for Nagel Langdons. I joined DAF Trucks in January 2017 and it’s been a steep learning curve getting to grips with training from a 34 DAF Driver // Truckfest Special 2018

manufacturer’s perspective as well as learning all about the changes to the New DAF Range. But I have enjoyed it immensely, and yes that includes all beastings – sorry training – from Mandy! “As the DAF Fleet Driver Training Manager, my main role entails looking after the training needs of fleets big and small. This can mean liaising with transport managers, owners, drivers and trainers as well as the DAF fleet sales team. My role is to make sure people know what courses and training is available and, as and when required, to help adapt and deliver it. Training is a serious business but can also be fun. I was recently involved with the Bidfood Driver of the Year Competition, which was extremely successful and has forged an excellent working relationship between the customer and DAF. “Although field-based, I work closely with the DAF Driver Academy in Thame as

this allows me to ensure customers get the training they need, when they need it. Amongst the different courses available is the DAF Programme of Excellence. This is a three-day intensive training programme specifically developed to upskill driver trainers. Once this has been completed I then work with those trainers in their own environment, helping them to adapt what they’ve learnt to suit their own fleet needs. I like the fact that no two companies or drivers are the same. Where possible, I try to involve our DAF Dealer Driver Trainers and introduce them to fleet customers. This can enable easy access to advice and training that might be needed at a local level in the future. “Time really has flown since last January and there have been challenges along the way. And you know something? I wouldn’t have it any other way.” •

visit to the DAF Museum means a trip back in time, past the historical heritage of Doorne’s Trailer Factory. The exhibits take visitors from the establishment of the company by brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne, up to and including the most modern trucks that roll off the DAF production line in the Eindhoven factories. The museum plots the 90-year history of DAF from its humble beginnings. Back

in 1928, the brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne laid the foundations for what has now become DAF Trucks. The workshop was located next to the brewery at number 27 Tongelresestraat in Eindhoven – where the museum is located today. Initially the brothers concentrated on steel fabrication – and in 1932 the company name was changed to “Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagenfabriek” (trailer factory), DAF for short. The manufacturer of trailers was a success, which ultimately led to

the production of vehicles. The museum follows the development of the company and its products and is packed full of everything the company has made – including prototypes and concepts of vehicles that never saw the light of day. The tour starts where the van Doorne brothers had their first workshop. The workshop, which was really a large smithy, has been completely restored and shows the tools that were used at the time.

Initially the brothers concentrated on steel fabrication – and in 1932 the company name was changed to “Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagenfabriek” (trailer factory), DAF for short. The manufacturer of trailers was a success, which ultimately led to

the production of vehicles. The museum follows the development of the company and its products and is packed full of everything the company has made – including prototypes and concepts of vehicles that never saw the light of day. The tour starts where the van Doorne brothers had their first workshop. The workshop, which was really a large smithy, has been completely restored and shows the tools that were used at the time.

F

or a few years I tackled the lanes of a rural county in a tipper hauling aggregates out of a quarry. It was a classic Mineral Merchant Father and Son Limited business steeped in history. The Old Man was a legend. Fiery, considerate, aloof, engaging – you never knew what mood he was going to be in when you collected the keys. He’d be there with his flask issuing last minute orders for collections, everything written down on scraps of paper and given, personally, to the driver. Woe betide the driver that lost a scrap of paper with the details on – customer, load, and destination. I did. Once. After that I took my own note book and wrote everything down a second time so if one flew out the window I wouldn’t have to phone in from the phone box and get an earful. A second earful awaited my return. The Old Man built everything up from a patch of land he’d bought for tuppence ha’penny way back when. He bought some land and quarried it and leased some more from a local land owner. With it came trucks and business. You worked all day, the pay was bang average, if you did what was asked then job security was as long as you wanted it, if you showed an independent streak or did something wrong you were gone. He knew your parents, relations, birthday, where you lived, who you married and most likely a few other things kept on file in case anyone put a foot wrong. He was feared and

respected in equal measure. I enjoyed the work and only moved on when my marriage hits the rocks. The Old Man had two children. His daughter briefly worked in the office before being whisked off her feet by some polo-playing aristocrat (most likely!). His son was brought into the fold. It became clear that he had no real aptitude for aggregates but he understood money. While the Old Man was there at 5.30am opening the gates and issuing orders, the lad arrived at nine, strode into the office and was not seen again until four when he drove around several of the quarries then hightailed it to somewhere he’d prefer to be. Brief spells in the transport office, on the weighbridge, the processing plant, sales office, administration and finally with the accountant were deemed enough to forge his ‘understanding’ of the business. I left before the Old Man was taken ill and the fruit of his loins, now in his 30s, took up the reins. Occasional calls from Big Dave, busy wrecking a newish Foden one pothole at a time, kept me up to speed with the changing times. The Old Man was put out to grass for medical reasons but tried to retain control, the boy was good enough to let him wander occasionally dispensing advice. In the meantime, the offspring used his brief time with the accountant to put forward ideas that would drive down operational costs while pushing up efficiencies. In short, equipment was sweated, wages stagnated and he drove up

volume while reducing the price of stone to squeeze out the competition. One casualty was my ex-father-in-law. He ran a tired six-wheeler as a subbie for the Old Man for years and did a bit of aggregate wholesaling out of the quarry for himself. He received two letters. The first told him that increased costs of rock blasting and processing, stiff competition from other quarries in the local area and falling demand, meant the haulage rates for subbies were frozen. The second letter explained that increased costs of rock blasting and processing, an upturn in demand for the quarry’s goods and rising haulage rates, meant the price of aggregate would be going up four percent. Both letters were signed by the adolescent. My ex-father-in-law took his business elsewhere. Not that it made any difference – Father & Son Limited flourished under junior. Turnover, both in terms of money and workforce, went up and the lavish cars driven by the juvenile were replaced as new models of Range Rover broke cover. When the Old Man passed away, the funeral was mobbed by many former employees. Heir apparent read a eulogy at the church then left. No-one was invited to the wake at the family estate. Instead we went to celebrate the life of the Old Man at the village pub; we bought our own drinks – even my exfather-in-law stood me a drink – and swapped stories long into the night. One wonders if the funeral of the Old Man’s only son will be so fondly remembered. ■
